The yacht, a symbol of luxury, freedom and exploration, conjures images of deep azure waters, crisp marine breezes, and serene seascapes. Yet, when one imagines such an esteemed vessel, the cityscape of Philadelphia may not spring immediately to mind.

Why Rent a Yacht in Philadelphia?

Yacht Rental Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love, as it is fondly referred to, is tucked away in the eastern United States, cradled by the gently flowing Delaware River. This river, in its stately course, tells tales as ancient as time itself, and in the whispers of its waters, it draws us in, tempting us to traverse its surface, to glimpse into its profundity.

To rent a yacht in Philadelphia is not merely to charter a course for a day of merriment on the Delaware; it is to embark on a journey through the rich tapestry of American history that this river holds in its watery embrace. It is to view the city's remarkable skyline not from the confines of concrete but from the shifting perspective of the waterway, a panoramic vista ever-changing with the movement of the yacht and the undulations of the waves.

The Delaware is not the only waterway beckoning the yacht enthusiast in Philadelphia. There is also the beautiful Schuylkill River, an enchanting sister river, offering a different perspective on the city, a different tale whispered through her ripples.

Navigating Philadelphia's Waterways: Unmissable Destinations

While embarking on a yacht journey in Philadelphia, one might wish to encounter the historical echoes of the cityscape, manifested not merely through the towering structures lining the rivers' banks but through the specific, deeply meaningful locales that each waterway proudly bears. Here are some of the destinations that one could aim to explore in a yacht journey in Philadelphia.

🚢 The Philadelphia Waterfront

Cruising along the Delaware River, one of the first landmarks to make its grand introduction is the vibrant Philadelphia Waterfront. With the iconic Benjamin Franklin Bridge forming a stately silhouette against the sky, it is a meeting point of urban life and natural spectacle. The waterfront, also known as Penn's Landing, is brimming with dining and entertainment options.

🚢 The Battleship New Jersey

Further down the river, moored stoically in the current, is the historic Battleship New Jersey. A relic from a turbulent era, it now serves as a floating museum, its imposing silhouette a testament to the might and resilience of times past.

🚢 Bartram's Garden

Venturing on the Schuylkill River, you would find the tranquil oasis of Bartram's Garden. It is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America, its verdant expanses mirrored in the quiet waters of the river. Mooring here could provide a peaceful respite from the city's hustle, allowing you to immerse yourself in the botanical wonderland.

🚢 Boathouse Row

Continuing northward, the twinkling lights of Boathouse Row gradually unfurl, creating a mesmerizing spectacle against the twilight sky. This historic site, comprising a string of 19th-century boathouses, radiates an irresistible charm that lures in anyone traversing the Schuylkill.

🚢 The Fairmount Water Works

Just beyond Boathouse Row, one comes upon the neoclassical architecture of the Fairmount Water Works. Once a key part of Philadelphia's water system, it is now an educational center. Its elegant edifice, nestled between the river and the illustrious Philadelphia Museum of Art, is a sight to behold.

🚢 The Navy Yard

South along the Delaware River from the bustling Philadelphia Waterfront, you will discover the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Once a pivotal player in the nation's naval history, it is now a burgeoning industrial park boasting an eclectic mix of modern businesses and historic structures. Its waterfront area, beautifully restored, is a peaceful spot for a mid-journey pause.

🚢 Spruce Street Harbor Park

Returning to the heart of the city, near Penn's Landing, you'll find the seasonal haven of Spruce Street Harbor Park. In the warmer months, this pop-up park transforms into an urban oasis adorned with twinkling lights, floating gardens, and riverside hammocks. It is a delightful sight from the river, especially during the evening hours when its vibrant energy comes alive.

🚢 Schuylkill Banks

As you navigate the gentle waters of the Schuylkill River, you will encounter the Schuylkill Banks. This riverside park, stretching from the Fairmount Water Works to the South Street Bridge, is a green artery coursing through the city. It is home to a plethora of wildlife, and offers numerous docking points, inviting you to disembark and enjoy its verdant landscape.

🚢 Philadelphia Zoo

Further up the Schuylkill, you might choose to anchor near the Philadelphia Zoo. Though you'll need to leave your vessel to explore, it's an enticing option for those looking to engage with the diverse fauna of our planet. From the river, you might catch the distant roars, tweets, and hoots of its inhabitants, a symphony of life reminding us of the wild origins of our now urbanized surroundings.

🚢 Manayunk Canal

Finally, if you're seeking an experience off the beaten track, guide your yacht towards the mouth of the Manayunk Canal. This historical waterway, once a significant part of Philadelphia's industrial story, is now a serene pathway surrounded by quaint restaurants and boutiques. The view from the water offers a unique perspective on this charming neighborhood.

Every destination on Philadelphia's rivers presents a new chapter in the city's rich narrative, a tale that is woven into the very fabric of its waters. Whether you're seeking a historical voyage, a natural retreat, or a journey into the heart of city life, Philadelphia's rivers and their hidden gems deliver an unforgettable yacht expedition.

What Should I Consider Before Renting a Yacht in Philadelphia?

Yacht Rental Philadelphia

Before one embarks on this aquatic adventure, there are several facets to consider, as multifaceted as the waterway you would explore.

Firstly, it is of paramount importance to understand the purpose of the journey. Is it a casual outing, a lavish celebration, or a quiet exploration? Identifying the objective aids in discerning the type of yacht you would require, and the amenities to seek.

Secondly, consider your group size. Much like the ecosystems in a natural habitat, harmony on board stems from the delicate balance of space and the number of occupants. Smaller yachts may be appropriate for intimate outings, while larger vessels are apt for sizeable social gatherings.

Thirdly, take into account the time of year. Though the Delaware and the Schuylkill are navigable year-round, the temperate climate of Philadelphia can provide a spectrum of experiences. From the fiery hues of autumn leaves reflected on the surface to the ethereal beauty of winter’s ice-fringed banks, each season offers a unique spectacle.

Lastly, consider your budget. The cost of yacht rental varies, dependent not only on the vessel's size and grandeur, but also on the time of year and length of charter.

Which is the Best Yacht for Philadelphia Waters?

Determining the best yacht for Philadelphia's waters can be as intricate a task as identifying the perfect specimen within a diverse habitat.

For navigating the Delaware, a vessel that can handle its broad, steady currents would be advantageous. This might mean choosing a motor yacht or a powerboat, both of which offer stability and speed, perfect for traversing the larger waterways while indulging in the comfort and luxury they provide.

However, for an intimate experience on the quieter, narrower waters of the Schuylkill, one might prefer a sailing yacht, a choice that allows a closer, more symbiotic relationship with the river. On such a vessel, one can better appreciate the gentle hum of the river, the whispers of the wind, and the silent stories of the city.

In Conclusion

Renting a yacht in Philadelphia is a journey unto itself, a meandering narrative that unfolds within the flow of the river and the rhythm of the city. As with any expedition, preparation is key. Consideration of your needs, budget, and the nature of Philadelphia's waters will guide you in choosing the right vessel. Whether it's a robust motor yacht for the Delaware or a serene sailing yacht for the Schuylkill, each offers a unique way to explore the city's aquatic character, opening a door to a new perspective on the City of Brotherly Love.

Sailing through Queries: Frequently Asked Questions

As we continue to voyage through Philadelphia's unique maritime culture, we find ourselves aboard an invisible vessel of knowledge, cruising through a sea of inquiries. Much like the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, a multitude of questions stream together, each contributing to the rich tapestry of understanding this multifaceted city's relationship with its waterways.

Let's explore some of these frequently asked questions about yacht rental in Philadelphia. As we answer each, we aim to paint a more vibrant, detailed picture of this extraordinary experience.

How can I learn basic boating safety before my yacht trip?

Safety, the anchor of any maritime excursion, is of paramount importance. Philadelphia offers numerous boating safety courses, both online and in-person, to ensure your journey is not just pleasurable, but also secure. Furthermore, professional yacht charter services often provide a comprehensive safety briefing before embarking.

What are the best times of the year to rent a yacht in Philadelphia?

Philadelphia's temperate climate allows for year-round yacht rental. However, the warmer months from May to October often offer the most enjoyable conditions for being on the water. Each season presents its own beauty, be it the spring blossoms, summer sunshine, autumn leaves, or winter's stark elegance.

Do I need a boating license to rent a yacht?

The necessity for a boating license depends on the type of yacht and the charter service. In many cases, professional yacht rental services provide a licensed skipper as part of the package. However, if you wish to captain the vessel yourself, you will need to check the requirements of both the rental company and the state of Pennsylvania.

Can I rent a yacht in Philadelphia for multiple days?

Yes, many yacht rental services in Philadelphia offer multi-day charters. These provide a unique opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the river's ebb and flow, exploring the city and its surroundings at a leisurely pace.

What kind of amenities can I expect on a yacht?

Amenities on yachts can vary greatly depending on the type and size of the vessel. They can range from basic facilities such as a galley (kitchen) and head (bathroom), to luxurious features like full-service bars, hot tubs, and staterooms with en-suite bathrooms. When booking your yacht, it's important to discuss your needs and preferences with the rental company.

As we reach the end of this question and answer journey, we hope these answers have illuminated the landscape of yacht rental in Philadelphia, providing valuable insights to make your experience not only safe and enjoyable, but also enriching.

yacht for rent philadelphia

My wife and I enjoyed the Schuylkill excursion very much. The guide, Bob Swayne, did a great job pointing out and commenting on spots of interest as we went along. The seats were comfortable, and we were well protected from a passing rain shower.

We had a group of 15 older adults on the Walnut-to-Walnut River Cruise - hands down, everyone enjoyed it and now want to make it an annual event!

The afternoon cruise was excellent value for money and the guide was extremely informative. Drinks sold on board were reasonably priced.

We celebrated my besties 40th on the Patriot. We had 25 girls and had the best experience from start to finish. Booking was easy! Day of event was seamless.

The Secrets of the Schuylkill tour is roughly an hour, spent on the quiet waters of the river in the golden sunlight being cooled by afternoon breezes, cruising by such iconic landmarks as Bartram's Garden and the Fairmount Water Works. Sublime!

The only lake in Pennsylvania where you can rent houseboats

In the Deep South, in places far from the surf, “ lake life ” is a big deal, and boating is more than a hobby.

There’s a slew of country songs about the lifestyle, too, tunes about specific rivers where it gets hotter than a “hoochie coochie,” as described in Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee,” and others about particular boats like the pontoon . There’s even a Merle Haggard song about houseboats, which are like pontoons with small houses on them, an aquatic RV more or less.

Jeremy Hetrick, a South Carolina native, knows all about lake life, but mostly because he’s the administrative assistant at Seven Points Marina on Raystown Lake, the largest entirely within Pennsylvania (the state has 77 miles of Lake Erie shoreline). Raystown, created by a hydroelectric dam process in 1973, is a whopping 8,300 acres. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and, unlike other large bodies of water in Pennsylvania, like Lake Wallenpaupack and Harveys and Conneaut Lakes , Raystown has almost no development.

There’s not a single house on its 118 miles of shoreline, but there’s a ton of houseboats, like the eight-person model Hetrick is about to board on the marina’s long network of docks.

“Most of this lake is untouched by human hands. It’s just nature,” Hetrick said at the marina on a steamy afternoon last month. “Just being in the outdoors, the tranquillity of it, and seeing the sunsets and stars. You’re not gonna get much of that anywhere near here.”

Seven Points Marina appears to be the only place in Pennsylvania where you can rent a houseboat — the Allegheny Reservoir stopped doing it — and they have more than a dozen that sleep anywhere from four to 10 people. You can rent the boats from Monday to Friday or Friday to Monday and, depending on the season, prices can range anywhere from $1,190 to $4,100 for the biggest model.

Again, they’re not just boats. They come with bedrooms, generators, full kitchens, bathrooms, sundecks, and, perhaps best of all, sliding boards.

“The kids obviously love them,” Hetrick said.

Seven Points’ website has a long FAQ for all of the questions one might ponder about a houseboat. How do you drive it? What should I bring? Where do I park this giant, floating house at night?

“The hardest part of driving a houseboat is driving them in and out of the dock, which we do for you,” the website says.

Houseboats are slow so no one can speed even if they wanted to. While you’ll have a ton of blind spots driving from what’s essentially your living room, other faster boats will notice and, ideally, steer clear. The houseboats don’t anchor at night — Raystown is a flooded valley full of trees in its depths. Instead, they tie up to trees along the shoreline in designated areas of the lake.

“It’s not your typical wide, round lake. It’s long and narrow and there are so many little coves on the lake that you can stay the night,” said Matt Price, executive director of the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau . “It’s like real wilderness too.”

Price said approximately 6% of Raystown Lake’s shoreline is developed, including the marina, the popular Lake Raystown Resort , and other camping destinations. He believes the lake’s houseboat culture — dozens were docked at Seven Points — resulted from the lack of development along its shore.

“In many ways, you can have your waterfront property for the night and then move around to another one,” he said.

There are a handful of houseboats on popular short-term rental sites, but it’s unclear if you’re allowed to actually pilot them. One doesn’t have an engine.

On some summer weekends, boaters will even tie up next to one another in Raystown’s “Party Cove,” a popular destination for younger boaters that sometimes includes DJs. Few people on the Party Cove “unfiltered” Facebook page wanted to discuss details, but here’s the exact location according to Google Maps.

Hetrick said houseboat renters come from all the surrounding states, particularly New York. and most are there to relax, barbecue, swim, and fish off the back of their temporary floating home. Some never even leave the dock, he said, though you can’t use the slide if you don’t.

“Most people come here for peace and quiet,” he said, “and we have plenty of that.”

Meet the first five semifinalists for our 2024 Health Hero Challenge

Last week, we announced the 10 semifinalists for this year’s Be Well Philly Health Hero Challenge presented by Independence Blue Cross.

To give you a better sense of who they are and the charities they’re supporting, we’ll be posting some more information about all 10 semifinalists over the next two weeks. That way, you have a glimpse into how they are working to help Philadelphians live healthier lives and why they’re advocating for their selected nonprofits.

You can vote once per day, every day through July 29th for who you’d like to see in the final round. The winner will not only be crowned the 2024 Health Hero, but will receive a $15,000 donation to their charity of choice. The two Health Hero runners-up will each receive a $2,500 donation to their selected charities, as well.

This week, we’re highlighting half of the 10 individuals who are in the running! Below, meet five of this year’s Health Hero Challenge semifinalists.

yacht for rent philadelphia

Who:  Amy Federer, director of operations at National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Nonprofit of choice: The National Alliance on Mental Illness , which advocates for mental-health-related public policy, raises public awareness to help fight the stigma of mental illness, and provides free educational programs and support groups for those living with mental illness and for their loved ones.

2024 health hero challenge

Who:  Jamie Colleen Miller, founder of Veracity Self-Defense . Colleen is a professional MMA fighter, a survivor of domestic abuse, and an advocate for women’s safety and empowerment.

Nonprofit of choice: Women Against Abuse , a Philadelphia-based domestic violence advocate and service provider. Since 1977, Women Against Abuse has operated safe havens — emergency shelters for survivors of domestic violence. They also help provide legal support, transitional housing, a 24/7 hotline and community education.

What motivates you to improve the lives of your community members? “I chose to support Women Against Abuse because I’m a survivor and former client of the organization. Ten years ago, I fled an abusive relationship that left me homeless as a single mother. Fortunately, I secured a bed at an emergency shelter, which allowed me to rebuild my life powerfully and on my own terms. The programs and support at the safe haven were crucial to my recovery. From the 24/7 hotline to the legal center and childcare, each resource played a pivotal role in helping me reclaim my life.

“I have witnessed how crucial compassionate assistance and a nurturing environment are in helping individuals rebuild their lives. My journey taught me the importance of self-respect, discipline and resilience, and now I am dedicated to sharing these lessons with others. The moment I discovered who I needed to be, I realized that the light and salvation I had been seeking were already within me. Recognizing that I was the beacon I needed and beginning to trust my own heart marked the true beginning of my transformation. Sometimes, we just need a gentle reminder that we already have everything necessary to reclaim our lives.”

2024 health hero challenge

Who:  Daniel Taylor, a pediatrician at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. In his two-plus decades at St. Chris, he has worked on community outreach projects, including co-directing their Reach Out and Read program, his nonprofit of choice. Taylor also developed the Cap4Kids website to help link families in need with social services.

Nonprofit of choice:  Reach Out and Read , a national organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness by integrating children’s books into pediatric care. At every well visit, kids receive brand-new developmentally appropriate — and culturally and situationally relevant — books. Taylor serves as co-director of the program at St. Christopher’s Hospital, which is situated in an area of Philadelphia that he tells us “has some of the highest poverty rates and one of the largest book deserts, in Pennsylvania.” Taylor explains, “This nationally recognized model has been shown to help children and families have more exposure to reading aloud, infants to have improved language skills, and gives children a vital school readiness skill as they start kindergarten.”

What motivates you to improve the lives of your community members? “I am a life-long Philadelphian and pediatrician for two decades in a part of Philadelphia where the life expectancy of children raised in the zip codes surrounding our hospital are 20 years lower than those just a few miles away. This is a stain on the city I love, and an inequity that demands innovative health initiatives to reduce this immoral gap in life-expectancy. Every dollar raised for this program goes directly into the little hands of the children we serve, as a book, and a message that you are seen and loved.”

2024 health hero challenge

Who: Mary Ciammetti, founder and president of Don’t Stall, Just Call

Nonprofit of choice: Don’t Stall, Just Call , an alcohol poisoning education program for university and high school students. Mary was inspired to start the nonprofit after her son Christian died at age 20 from complications of alcohol poisoning due to binge drinking. “I knew I had to do something to try to save other families from a similar fate,” Mary says, explaining that alcohol poisoning can turn fatal because those who could call for help “don’t know what to look for.” Don’t Stall, Just Call provides students with alcohol education, anxiety reduction strategies and wellness opportunities as healthy alternatives to drinking. The organization has also established an annual scholarship for students at Temple University, where Mary’s son was a student.

What motivates you to improve the lives of your community members? “If we can help save one life, spare one family the pain of losing a loved one, empower one high school or college student to make healthy choices, then I feel I’ve met my purpose. The education Don’t Stall, Just Call offers is lifesaving. Sorority sisters, frat brothers, college athletes, high school juniors, you name it, email me and say, ‘Thanks to you, I knew what to do.’ Some have lost family or friends to alcohol or drug addiction. After presentations, many young people approach me for a word, a hug, or to grab a t-shirt or hat from our table. They will say they’ve been afraid at parties, seeing a friend overindulge. Having the tools to help is empowering, as is knowing the strategies to keep themselves safe: hydrating, eating a meal before a night out, being each other’s keeper.”

yacht for rent philadelphia

Who: Marci Schankweiler, founder and CEO of For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation

Nonprofit of choice: For Pete’s Sake , which provides transformative respite experiences for adult (ages 21 to 55) cancer patients, their caregivers, and their children, through both travel to Woodloch Resort and at-home staycation care packages. These experiences allow families to “take a break from what life with cancer has become” and create new memories and strengthen their relationships. FPS also offers families seminars, in-person events and online communication in a follow-up program called Respite Reinforced. Marci founded FPS in honor of her late husband, Pete, who lost his battle with testicular cancer at the age of 30. Marci explains, “Our program is structured to effectuate meaningful change following a model for family health. This model includes seven health pillars: family, mental, physical, psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and financial health.  When one person gets cancer, the entire family gets diagnosed.”

What motivates you to improve the lives of your community members? “When Pete was diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 29, I learned that if we were not healthy as a couple, and if we did not receive support from our community to improve our mental health, treatment would be near impossible to adhere to. I honored Pete’s last wish to start a nonprofit that would provide Respite Experiences for adult cancer patients, their caregivers, and their children.

“We are living in such a fragmented time and community is often overlooked. Cancer touches us all; FPS unites families through respite and gives them a community to grow with, lean on and learn from, forever. I want to amplify the message that we all need each other and that it’s crucial to take care of our family health during any challenging journey.”
