Nobiskrug has a new owner: Tennor group acquires the German yard

Today, Lars Windhorst, founder and owner of the Tennor Group, takes over the renowned superyacht shipyard Nobiskrug in Rendsburg, Germany. In the future, Nobiskrug and Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) – already part of the Tennor group – will work under an integrated management and joined administration while operating from their proven locations. Therefore the skills of the specialist for merchant and naval vessels from FSG will be bundled with the know-how of the superyacht builders from Nobiskrug. In particular in the areas of design, purchasing and administration, the total of 645 employees will work together across locations. Close cooperation is also to be established between the production departments.

“Nobiskrug and its employees ideally complement our strategy in the shipbuilding industry, which started with FSG,” explains Lars Windhorst . “Our strategic goal is to achieve relevant market shares in both of these significant markets and at the same time to develop technical innovations. The progress towards zero emission is an essential topic for ship owners and shipping companies, and today we are 2 joining forces with Nobiskrug and FSG for this purpose as well.” A symbolic keellaying plate with a traditional coin documents this important day in the shipyard’s history.

For Philipp Maracke , the CEO of FSG and Nobiskrug, the connection between the two workforces is paramount: “With the takeover of the Nobiskrug shipyard, we are positioning ourselves broadly for the future. Both shipyards have extensive know-how in the construction of specialised and technically complex vessels, which complement each other perfectly. It is the people who will make FSG and Nobiskrug strong as a unit. The mutual support in working across sites will lead to tighter relationships with our customers and suppliers. ”The two shipyards are ideally connected geographically as well, with a travel time of less than an hour, thus enabling a close cooperation. Schleswig-Holstein’s maritime industry should also benefit: “We will strive to ensure that outstanding national and international shipbuilding projects are realised in the state of Schleswig-Holstein,” says Philipp Maracke.

Chairman of the Works Council, Marcus Stöcken counts on the mutual development with a long-term perspective for the company: “The entire Nobiskrug workforce stands for craftsmanship. As a team, from planners and administrative staff to mechanics, engineers and metal workers, we deliver high-tech quality in custom shipbuilding to owners from all over the world. For us, cooperation at eye level with the investor and the management is important. Mutual trust is fundamental for the workforce to work well.” The continuation of in-depth training – currently 16 young people are apprenticed in seven different professions at Nobiskrug – is also a major concern for him, he said.

Over the past two decades Nobiskrug has developed and built unique superyachts. The shipyard with its excellent facilities, is the ideal place for building high qualitative superyacht projects.

Both companies will ensure that the world-renowned shipyards in Flensburg and Rendsburg will continue to stand for innovative, sophisticated and efficient shipbuilding of the future.

80m superyacht ARTEFACT delivered by Nobiskrug

By Katia Damborsky   6 March 2020

The futuristic 80m/263ft motor yacht ARTEFACT is currently undertaking her maiden voyage to Gibraltar, having left Nobiskrug’s facilities in Rendsburg yesterday.

Having successfully completed rigorous sea trials in the Baltic Sea, hybrid superyacht ARTEFACT has now been delivered to her Owner.

She is en route to Gibraltar, and according to our AIS data she is currently in the English Channel.

At 2,990GT, Artefact is now the highest-volume 80-metre superyacht in the world.

The yacht’s eye-catching exteriors are the work of Gregory C. Marshall.

Her unique profile is created through an excess of glass panels- around 750 square metres and 58 tonnes of glass have been used in total, and she is believed to have the highest ratio of glass to LOA for any yacht in her size bracket.

“We’re not afraid of pushing the envelope, but perhaps the biggest challenge with Artefact was that she’s a very high volume yacht with a fibreglass superstructure and tremendous amount of heavy glass,” Nobiskrug’s Managing Director, Holger Kahl, has said in the past.

Around 750 square metres and 58 tonnes of glass have been used in total, and she is believed to have the highest ratio of glass to LOA for any yacht in her size bracket.

To offset the added weight from the glass, the yacht’s superstructure is made out of GRP instead of the more traditional aluminum.

The yacht’s bold exterior reflects a visionary Owner who wanted to ensure environmental responsibility, cutting-edge innovation, and a distinctive look were all part of the package.

ARTEFACT yacht lit up at night

In terms of eco-credentials, Artefact boasts on-board solar panels and a large battery storage system which allows her to operate without internal combustion engines for short periods of time.

“The set up allows us to run the yacht in a state of optimal efficiency and minimal wear and tear on the generators,” explains the yacht’s captain and owner’s representative, Aaron T. Clark. “Basically, we’re always conserving or redirecting energy, that’s the real advantage.”

The motor yacht is among the first superyachts to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations and she features an innovative diesel-electric propulsion system which makes her up to 30% more efficient than other diesel yachts of her size.

She is around 30% more efficient than other diesel yachts of her size.

The yacht will also be committed to minimising damage to the seafloor by using dynamic positioning technology. This will ensure she can maintain her position on the water without having to drop anchor.

Artefact can also recycle wastewater for use as technical water.

The interiors of ARTEFACT have been helmed by Reymond Langton Design. The styling and themes have yet to be unveiled, but it’s being reported that the yacht departs from convention in pursuit of maximum stability and silent operations.

The master stateroom is situated aft rather than forward, and all guest entertainment areas are located in low acceleration zones.

Based on the scale model of the yacht on display at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show, we can see a large aft deck pool and intimate Portuguese bridge section.

Artefact is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of human experience which are often overlooked or ignored. Captain Aaron T Clark

Captain Aaron T Clark added: “Artefact is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of human experience which are often overlooked or ignored.

“Many traditional aspects of a superyacht GA’s have been challenged and reimagined in this design to create an unprecedented experience while minimizing the impact on fragile marine ecosystems.”

New owner for Nobiskrug’s 77m Black Shark

  • March 5, 2022

The German superyacht builder has announced a new owner for the 77m Black Shark, marking the third order since the shipyard’s acquisition last summer.

nobiskrug superyacht owner

Nobiskrug has announced that a new owner has signed for the 77m Black Shark , so construction will continue ahead of a scheduled delivery in summer 2023. Imperial is acting as the broker and owner’s representative of the five-deck superyacht, which will be completed in Nobiskrug’s 160m air-conditioned dry dock.

Philipp Maracke, Managing Director of Nobiskrug, said: “In intensive negotiations we prevailed against strong competitors and proved that we are the best partner for our customer. The fact that we were able to renew the contract for the construction of this outstanding ship makes me very proud on behalf of the employees of the shipyard.”

The contract marks the third order since the Rendsburg shipyard’s acquisition last year by the Tennor Group, with investor Lars Windhorst significantly involved in the negotiations for Black Shark .

The yacht’s dynamic, imposing exterior is by UK-based Winch Design, while Dutch studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design created the interior. Features include a matt-black hull, silver metallic superstructure, a distinctive reverse bow and a mast reminiscent of a shark’s fin.

Black Shark is being built in compliance with Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part A and IMO Tier 3 regulations, which set strict emission limits.

Exclusive details of Nobiskrug's 77m 'Black Shark' revealed

The keel laying ceremony took place in kiel, during which the build team discussed the project….

Image for article Exclusive details of Nobiskrug's 77m 'Black Shark' revealed

On 20 February, 2019, Nobiskrug hosted the keel laying ceremony for the 77m M/Y Black Shark at its keel laying facility in Kiel, which is on track to meet its scheduled delivery in the spring of 2021. Imperial acted as broker for the sale of the project and continues as owner’s representative and construction supervisor throughout the build. This is the Imperial's second collaboration with Nobiskrug on a 70m-plus project.

Black Shark has a striking exterior penned by Winch Design. Painted black, with an imposing reverse bow and lines emulating a shark, the yacht will certainly have marina appeal. The shark theme will continue on the interiors, which have been created by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design.

nobiskrug superyacht owner

Speaking exclusively to SuperyachtNews , Andrew Winch reveals that the initial design was never intended to emulate a shark. “We initially wanted to create a design with pure lines that appeared to be low volume on the interior and high volume on the interior,” explains Winch. “It was the client that then saw the shark within the design and added the customisation of the mast to look like a shark fin.”

Features of the interior layout include eight guest cabins, a main deck that will atypically be used as a formal business area and a more family-orientated area in the sky lounge. Black Shark will also feature two tenders, a spacious on-deck whirlpool, three decks and a luxurious beach club and spa area. She is being built under the new IMO Tier 3 regulations and Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part A.

The Sinot team has created a unique but sophisticated interior concept. “We have microscopically looked at the texture and effect of shark skin and closely studied the way a shark moves through water, which will be reflected on a subliminal level in challenging materials and interesting features on the interior,” explains Zlatko Imamovic, yacht designer at Sinot.

nobiskrug superyacht owner

For Nobiskrug, the keel laying ceremony marks an important milestone within a yacht’s build journey. In addition to the actual placing and securing of the keel laying section, the ceremony features a traditional coin insertion, which sees the owner place a special coin under the keel. As well as being a symbolic start to the hull assembly, it is also a mark of good luck for when sailing the oceans, and is therefore retrieved and returned to the owner once the yacht nears completion.

During the ceremony, Nobiskrug' Managing Director Holger Kahl shared the yard’s excitement to realise the project in collaboration with two renowned teams of designers and an experienced management company. “With that in mind, we have decided to open our doors and give exclusive behind-the-scenes access,” he announced. “The build process is often cloaked in darkness and secrecy, so on this occasion, we are enormously happy to be able to share our innovations and processes.”

Look out for a more in-depth report of Project Black Shark in an upcoming issue of The Superyacht Report , to be published later this year.

15 Best Luxury Yacht Builders and Shipyards in the World

Published on july 21, 2024 at 5:37 pm by dragana randjelovic in news.

In this article we will list 15 best luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world . You may be interested in searching for 15 Best Boat/Yacht Insurance Companies Heading into 2024 , too.

Luxury Yacht Builders Rebound Post-Pandemic

According to a study from the Italian Marine Industry Association and Deloitte , the global new build yachting market has reached €33 billion ($35.9 billion) during the industry boom in 2022. This marks an 11% increase from the year before, and a CAGR of 10% since 2014. Increasing prices, along with increasing demand from customers, has been responsible for this positive growth. According to the study, Europe and North America are the biggest consumer groups, taking up 70% of the total market share. Italy remains at the top in yacht building, generating €4.4 billion in yacht production value for 2022.

Despite the positive growth, superyacht sales have taken a dive in 2023, the new SuperYacht Times’ State of Yachting report indicates. Long wait times, rising costs, and the exclusion of Russian oligarchs from the superyacht market have all led to this decline. There were 203 superyacht sales in 2023, down from 245 in 2022, and from a record 313 in 2021. A buyer placing an order for a new yacht over 200 feet today has to wait three to four years owing to backlogs from the pandemic. Orders for yachts between 200 t0 600 feet have experienced the most decline, by 40%, largely since the rich buyers from Russia are dropping out of the market. Despite the drop in new sales, yacht completions have been up. According to SuperYacht Times, there are now nearly 6,000 super yachts, triple the number in 2022.

It wasn’t simple to make a list of the world’s best yacht builders and shipyards in the world, especially now when it seems that the superyacht business has regained its momentum. Following the pandemic’s upheaval, boat builders have resumed normal operations. There are now 173 small yacht manufacturers and large builders in 25 countries working on at least one yacht larger than 24m. Every year, around 400 boats larger than 24m are supplied to their owners by luxury yacht companies that specialize in yacht categories or product segments that distinguish them from other commercial shipyards. Experts believe that there are currently around 5,000 boats larger than 24 meters navigating the world’s oceans.

15 Best Luxury Yacht Builders and Shipyards in the World

Methodology

To compile a list of the premier luxury yacht builders and shipyards globally, we undertook a comprehensive comparison of leading companies with those recognized for producing the most esteemed and high-value yachts. Our methodology involved cross-referencing top-rated yacht lists with data on their builders. By aggregating the frequency of mentions across lists such as IYC Yacht, YachtWorld, Elite Traveler, amongst others; we established a preliminary ranking. Subsequently, we assessed these companies based on the prominence of their yachts on industry-leading rankings and their annual revenue. This analysis revealed that the top-ranked companies distinguished themselves not only through frequent appearances on prestigious lists but also through exceptional performance across various metrics.

At Insider Monkey we are obsessed with the stocks that hedge funds pile into. The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points ( see the details here ).

This is how our list of the best luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world looks like.

15. Princess Yachts

Insider Monkey Score: 2

Princess Yachts was founded in 1965 in a modest industrial unit on Newport Street in Plymouth. Since then, Princess has become one of the top luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world. South African businessman Graham J. Beck bought the company in 1981. In 2001, Marine Projects changed their name to Princess Yachts International PLC. Princess Yachts operates in 119 countries and employs over 3,200 people worldwide, with shipyards totaling over 1.1 million square feet.

14. Perini Navi

Perini Navi specializes in superior craftsmanship of some of the world’s largest super sailing yacht builders. Their constant growth in the design, engineering, and construction of aluminum superyachts has propelled them to the industry leader in the large, custom super sailing yacht sector. Fabio Perini started Perini Navi in 1983 in Viareggio, Italy. Unable to find a huge sailing yacht that he could run alone, Fabio founded a firm to build and engineer his own vessel, launching a prototype sailing yacht with plenty of living space that could be sailed with a smaller crew. In 2021 Perini Navi became a part of The Italian Sea Group which increased the portfolio in 2023 to six companies.

13. Delta Marine

In 1967, brothers Jack and Ivor Jones launched Delta Marine on Seattle’s Duwamish River. The shipyard initially focused on producing fishing boats that could withstand the frequently harsh waters of the Pacific Northwest and became one of the best small yacht brands. Delta Marine’s success in the fishing industry inspired the shipyard to create luxury expedition ships capable of transporting their customers north to Alaska, west to the Pacific islands, and around the globe. Delta Marine shifted their focus to custom superyachts in the 1990s.

12. Fincantieri Yachts

Fincantieri Yachts, an Italian shipyard and now one of the best luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world, has been around since 1780. The first shipbuilding enterprise was founded in Castellammare di Stabia, and it served as the foundation for the world-renowned corporation. By the mid-twentieth century, the business had become part of the state-owned IRI and was in charge of the country’s primary shipbuilders; Fincantieri Yachts was established as a separate branch in 1984. The shipyard has established itself as a multifaceted entity. Fincantieri’s facilities are now building military ships, including submarines, passenger and industrial vessels, as well as a new market area, megayacht construction, which began in 2005.

11. Royal Huisman

Royal Huisman is a Dutch shipbuilding company that specializes in the new build, refit, rebuild, and renewal of sailing and motor yachts. The shipyard in Ronduite was founded in 1884 to produce wooden workboats and fishing boats. Jan Huisman began building steel sailing boats in 1954, and his son Wolter converted to aluminum hulls in 1964 with the 30 ft Van de Stadt Avenir series. In celebration of the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands bestowed the title “Royal” to Huisman, renaming the company Royal Huisman.

10. Sanlorenzo

Insider Monkey Score: 3

Sanlorenzo Shipyard has been producing high-quality motorboats since 1958. It is a yachting boutique enterprise that produces only a small number of custom yachts each year. Each boat is custom-designed and built to meet the owner’s exact needs, style, and preferences. The shipyard’s headquarters are located on the banks of the Magra River, within the Montemarcello-Magra Natural Reserve, near Ameglia, province of La Spezia, Liguria, Italy. Since its founding, the firm has manufactured just roughly 1000 ships, each one special and unique. Since 2005, the organization has adopted a fresh approach to personalization and innovation. As a result, the shipyard has expanded significantly. Over the last eight years, the company has gradually established itself in Boat International’s annual Global Order Book rating.

9. Blohm & Voss

The German shipyard Blohm+Voss was named after its founders, Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss, who chose to join forces in 1877 to construct steel steamers. Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss, the founders of the Blohm & Voss-Werft, rose to prominence far beyond Hamburg. Unfortunately, after several dismal seasons in the 2000s, the company discontinued creating new yachts. As part of Lürssen, the shipyard will no longer manufacture boats, but will continue and even increase its yacht refit, commercial, and military building activities. The firm is on this list because their boats are consistently on the list of the best boats, and three of their boats are among the best ever built.

Insider Monkey Score: 4

Heesen Yachts is one of the best luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world, being a Dutch shipbuilding firm that specializes in custom-built superyachts. Founded in 1978, it has launched over 200 yachts, several of which have received prizes. It is recognized as a global leader in the design, construction, and engineering of all-aluminum boats. After a string of popular and pricey boats, 1988 proved to be the yard’s breakthrough year. American entrepreneur John Staluppi had commissioned the yard to build a superyacht capable of speeds exceeding 50 knots. Heesen expanded in 2003, the same year it introduced its 3700 and 4400 yacht series, which were among the first examples of superyacht building on a shared hull and engineering platform.

7. Abeking & Rasmussen

Abeking and Rasmussen is a luxury yacht constructor that specializes in big custom motor yachts constructed from steel. The company has previously built sailing boats, maritime vessels, and swath vessels. Georg Abeking and Henry Rasmussen formed the company in 1907. The business began producing navy warships such as torpedo boats, minesweepers, and submarine destroyers. Later, the firm began constructing speedboats and sailing yachts. The yard has a reputation for pioneering new technologies, having manufactured some of the world’s most technically advanced yachts. Many of the projects they have created are notable for overcoming technical engineering obstacles, such as Germania VI in 1963, the first sailing yacht with a welded aluminium hull, and the 1972 motor yacht Kalamoun, the world’s fastest at the time, hitting 46 knots. The Krupp Foundation still owns their latest yacht, Germania VI.

6. Ferretti

Norberto and Alessandro Ferretti, brothers from Bologna, Italy, expanded their family’s successful luxury auto business, which marketed Maserati and Lamborghini, by opening a yacht dealership in 1968. The Ferretti brothers initially marketed other boat builders, but during the Genoa Boat Show in 1971, they debuted their first yacht design, a 10-meter wooden motorsailer. Ferretti boats, the first member of the Ferretti Group of international luxury yacht brands, manufactures semi-custom composite boats in Forli, Italy, ranging in size from 16 to 29 meters. The Ferretti Yachts 960 type, introduced in 2013, is the largest planing luxury yacht ever built by any of the Ferretti Group shipyards. Ferretti Group is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2022 and debuted on Euronext Milan, the Milan-based stock exchange owned by Borsa Italiana. In 2023, the company became the first and only company in the world to achieve dual listing in Asia and Europe which qualified the company for the list of the best luxury yacht builders and shipyards in the world.

Nobiskrug-Project-Black-Shark

77m Project Black Shark to be completed at Nobiskrug

Nobiskrug has confirmed that the 77 metre superyacht Project Black Shark will be completed at the builder's Rendsburg facility. The owner has now signed the contract for the construction of the project to continue after plans were scuppered when the German shipyard filed for insolvency in 2021.

The project, named for its shark-inspired superstructure, was sold by  Imperial  in April 2018 and is expected to be handed over to its owner in summer 2023.

“In intensive negotiations we prevailed against strong competitors and proved that we are the best partner for our customer," said Nobiskrug managing director Philipp Maracke. "The fact that we were able to renew the contract for the construction of this outstanding ship makes me very proud on behalf of the employees of the shipyard."

Designed by British studio Winch Design , the five-deck yacht is built in steel and aluminium with a dorsal fin-like mast structure and a distinctive reverse bow. Once finished, the hull will be painted in matte black to mimic the skin of the black shark. The dark colour will wrap around three decks while the superstucture will be painted in a "sporty" metallic silver to complement the mast.

Project Black Shark is set to feature interior styling by  Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design  with two luxury tenders, an on-deck whirlpool and a grand beach club with a spa area.

The accommodation layout has not been revealed but it is known that Project Black Shark will be built under Tier 3 regulations and the Red Ensign Yacht Code Part A. Key figures include a 12.75 metre beam and 2,080 GT.

Project Black Shark will be finished in Nobiskrug's dry dock with tasks including the installation of pipework, cabling, insulation and electrical systems such as lighting, entertainment facilities and air-conditioning set to take place over the coming months. Filing and fairing work will be finished shortly before a layer of distinctive matte black paint is applied to the hull to complete the build.
