How Bertram Yachts Adopted a Seaworthy Product Configurator With HubSpot

bertram yachts marketing

Since the 1960s, Bertram has been synonymous with luxury and quality in the marine industry. Their yachts, such as the timeless 35FB and the sportfishing-ready 39CC , are durably constructed to reflect sleek, “rugged reliability.” Each one is built to withstand the choppiest of waters and the tugs of the mightiest marlins.  Bertram’s network of dealers let them know that customers love the fact that they can select a wide range of options when building their ideal boat, ranging from large options — like utility centers featuring bait prep stations, sinks, and drawers — down to small details such as upholstery, sunshades, and trim.  As Bertram’s product range continued growing and demand increased, they recognized the importance of a configurator tool that enabled customers to see their ideal vessels in full detail with the most accurate pricing and available options for that model year. Brandon Jones, the Salted Stone strategist behind the configurator project, reflected, “We all asked ourselves, ‘What if we were able to take this idea, a typically expensive project for larger brands, and build it out using HubSpot, at a tenth of the price?’”

Overcoming Challenges

Alex Moses, Director of Marketing at Bertram, had a vision for a new configurator tool, having analyzed a range of examples across disparate industries (including marine, automotive, and bicycles). Moses and Salted Stone’s design team first discussed the ideal visual and functional makeup of the desired application, using the compiled examples as models.

Bertram-Experience-Diagram@2x

“We knew we wanted the configurator on these new pages to be visually clean, and not overwhelming,“ said Melissa De Guzman, Senior Visual Designer at Salted Stone. “The client did their research and knew their audience’s strong preferences for highly accessible UI that’s intuitive even for users who didn’t grow up on the web.”

Bertram-Sketches

Ahead of the kickoff, Moses created twenty-four detailed spreadsheets containing the individual, variable components of each of the six boat models - a total of around five hundred selection items. Because each boat contained many individual components within a given category, the development team had to segment a proverbial sea of disparate information to develop an operable configurator with an intuitive front end. Once the configurator was successfully developed, the Salted Stone team had to decide how best to showcase “progressive” items, or pieces of the application dependent on the selection of other items. Although base boat models themselves come with a wide variety of items that clientele might like, a handful of other add-ons make a base Bertram boat a “premium” version of the product.  “Progressive items were a big priority for us to showcase correctly,” Moses said, “These are among the most expensive options offered to our clients, and we needed to showcase them in a simple, user-friendly, and elegant way. We also wanted to show our audience that our base boat packages are already spec'd to be a premium product, as shown with ‘included as standard’ default options which are also listed in the summary sheet before the user even begins to build their boat in the tool.”

Salted Stone’s Approach

To bring the Build and Price tool to life, the Salted Stone development team used HubDB to create different tables for storing the components of each boat by category, tying them together with a main HubDB table.

Bertram Build and Price

Development Team Lead Karen Cagape said, “The main table secured available options for each boat by distinct category. And, in addition to intricately mapping HubDB tables, we also built a global module, one that’s dependent on the main table. That way, the client still has flexibility within each module, but the whole system stays integrated.” This module allowed internal operations to have full control over the displayed categories and subcategories on each page, as well as the display of progressive fields, for when specific options were selected by clientele. For different boat models, Bertram can control not just the options themselves (which are in the HubDB tables) but how those options are displayed (e.g. is pricing visible, are they progressive options, are they mutually exclusive with other options in the same or a different category, etc). The final step was to dial in the UI to match the audience preferences Bertram had uncovered. “We essentially applied the kinds of details that help customers navigate the application intuitively,” said Designer Melissa De Guzman, “like tooltips, accordion selectors, and ‘More Information’ tabs to create a seamless user experience.”

The Results

The completed Build and Price tool was a two-fold success, for both Bertram’s customers and its internal operations. “We used multiple hubs to create a highly interactive, front-end experience for customers,” Brandon Jones said. “It gives customers access to the company’s products with the specificity and immediacy previously available to them only in a dealership, which helps create a higher likelihood of sales.”

Bertram_Isometric_Illustration

For Moses and the Bertram team, the use of HubDB in their internal operations has been a game-changer. “It’s really helped simplify the process of updating pricing and options. Having a centralized pricing system provides an added layer of security, and it enables us to have greater oversight and management of our products’ pricing in the marketplace.” Karen Cagape says. “Personally, I like to see the most challenging aspects of a project come to fruition. And the fact that the finished product helped the client optimize their operations makes all the difference to us at Salted Stone.” For Bertram, their Build and Price is a seaworthy tool for a business charting a path toward growth.

Timeline History and Story of Bertram Yachts

1. richard bertram and his fondness for yachting.

Bertram was a competitive sailor and owned a yacht brokerage firm, outside of Miami that he started in 1947. This was his bread before he began the Bertram Yachts. But his fondness for yachting can be dated way back. He was about eight years old when he got his first boat which was a 15’ sneakbox. This was the age when boating became his favorite pastime.

While he was studying at Cornell University, he founded Cornell’s very own Corinthian Yacht Club. Under his participation, the university club won several sailing titles till 1937. He continued sailing even after moving to Miami and even made it to the World Lightning Class championships for the years 1948 and 1949. He went on to participate in several races only to find a company in the other two people. These people were Sherman F. “Red” Crise and Sam Griffith.

2. Foundation of Bertram Yachts (1960)

In 1958, while participating in one of his races, Richard Bertram noticed a 23-foot-long beauty and immediately fell in love with it. He had never seen a powerboat so magnificent that he himself wanted to own one. He asked the designer, C. Raymond Hunt, to design one for him. Using Hunt’s plan, Bertram in 1960 built his first powerboat yacht Moppie. It was named after his wife’s pet name. This laid the foundation of Bertram Yachts.

3. Introduction of New Boats (1962, 1963 and 1964)

Bertram Yachts later went on to build new boats. There were three that were built, which were: The 25’ line in 1962 The 38’ line in 1963 The 20’ inboard/outboard model in 1964 While producing these yachts, Bertram decided to have its own production unit. Many people do not know but the production facility was designed in such a way that it could also work as a food-processing warehouse, just in case. Luckily, Bertram never needed it.

4. Memorial Race for Partner Griffith (1963)

Bertram’s partner passed away in 1963. So, Richard Bertram organized a memorial race to pay tribute to him. Not only did he organize but he also participated and won the race.

This was the time that he became a celebrity. He was seen in Rolex advertisements and on billboards promoting Camel cigarettes. He had successfully associated his name with the title of ‘Champion’.

5. Nautec Purchased Bertram

Bertram left after his success and the factory came to a standstill. After this incident, Nautec purchased Bertram and started the facility again.

6. Whittaker Corporation Purchased Bertram (1968)

After a short run of ownership, in 1968 Whittaker Corporation purchased Bertram Yachts from Nautec and they continued competing in different events and winning them all.

7. The Era of Steady Growth (1970 to 1980)

After the Whittaker acquisition, Bertram Yachts saw steady growth all through from the 1970s to the 1980s.

8. Hatteras- The Arch-rival of Bertram (1980s)

Bertram developed a new arch-rival with Hatteras. The dual was sad for Bertram as Hatteras won it with their more diverse models.

9. Financial Difficulties for Bertram (1993)

Bertram continued to produce sportfishing boats. This along with the depleting economy of America, caused Bertram Yachts to go under financial difficulties. This led to a forced shutdown in 1993.

10. Bertram Yachts Purchased by Ferretti Group (1998)

Bertram Yachts was revived by Ferretti Group as it acquired it in 1998. The Italian group changed everything and built some amazing models.

11. The Sad Demise of Richard Bertram (2000)

In 2000, the father of the company, Richard Bertman passed away, leaving behind a brilliant legacy and a colourful history.

12. Acquisition of all Bertram’s Assets by Gavio Group (2015)

In 2015, the Gavio Group got hold of all of Bertram’s assets and planned to introduce some new models.

The Present Scenario of Bertram Yachts

Despite the ups and downs and the acquisition changes, Bertram continues to be a popular yacht brand. In 2018, Bertram Yachts under the ownership of the Gavio Group introduced a new model, Bertram Yacht 61 Convertible at the Newport International Boat Show on September 13, 2018.

Bertram production arrives in Italy

A new European division is born for Bertram, the iconic American brand

Betram 35

which, owned by the Gavio family and part of the Baglietto group since 2015, manufactures the legendary American fisherman boats. In fact, the Marina di Carrara production site will host both the construction and the offices responsible for marketing the brand, for Italy and all of Europe. This move stems from the need to satisfy the numerous requests from European enthusiasts of these boats , a decision that will not, however, undermine the stars and stripes DNA that has always characterized the soul of these models.

“ Bertram is still a 100% American product – emphasizes the group’s chairman Beniamino Gavio – some of the components will in fact be imported directly from the United States, but we are certain that all the prerogatives are there to meet the needs of our customers, who have always appreciated yachts that offer style, versatility and charm while maintaining excellent marine qualities”.

“The tradition of the Bertram product, its history and heritage,” adds Diego Michele Deprati , Baglietto’s CEO, “are a perfect match for the Baglietto tradition. They are both iconic brands that draw on the maritime tradition on which they have built their history of quality and success”.

Bertram’s new European division is off to a good start, with the first sale confirming the winning formula. This is a 35-foot yacht commissioned by Dr Andy Bianchedi , a passionate sailor and long-time owner, who chose this model which will be produced in Carrara in a “limited edition”. The boat will be delivered in spring 2023.

Bertram-in-Europe

But the marriage between the love of sailing and the legendary American brand is not surprising at all: it has distant origins, starting with the yard’s founder. Richard “Dick” Bertram was a famous sailor, sportsman and winner of many sailing competitions, including the America’s Cup and the Newport to Bermuda Ocean Race, a 635-mile offshore race that he won three times. Perhaps it was his passion for ocean navigation that inspired Bertram, more than sixty years ago, to start producing powerboats with the legendary deep-V hull, capable of holding the sea superbly. It is no coincidence, therefore, that Bertram boats are universally recognized for their marine qualities.

The sound bite must be true: The sun never does set on the Bertram empire, regardless of who rules it or where the kingdom is located.

Bertram Yachts, a symbol of American muscle on the water since 1961, has been owned by Americans, Italians and now, Chinese businessmen. Its luxurious, hardcore saltwater sportfishing machines were built down in the boondocks in Miami for 50 years., but the next launches will be from Florida’s space coast in the old but never-been-used Sea Ray plant on Merritt Island.

After weathering bumps along the roads of commerce and marketing, Bertram Yachts still has the smoothest ride on the roughest blue waters. Waves breaking over the bow and flybridge of a 31 Moppie in 15-foot seas are why this brand’s reputation is known as the ultimate sportfish battlewagon , a testament to a seaworthy deep vee hull design and robust construction. Bertram was and still is a tough, fast boat with a comfortable ride, able to slug it out in conditions that leave lesser vessels hugging the shore. A Bertram is designed for someone who fishes so much that they will eventually get caught in some stink of a storm.

The dream boat created by founder Dick Bertram after shattering the speed record for the extremely rough 1960 Miami-Nassau Race was the beginning of a legacy of innovation. The Bertram 31 “Moppie” became an instant classic and the number one sportfishing boat on the planet. The cabin was placed slightly forward to creative a massive cockpit space. Wraparound cabin windows provided tremendous visibility from below, and longitudinal strakes running the length of the hull kept the boat dry.

New Luxury Five decades later, the new 50- to 80-foot luxury sport fishing yachts continue that tradition. Bertram is geared to build 15 to 25 boats a year costing between $1.5 million and $6 million. The line is designed with a more stream-lined appearance.

“ (They are built) 36 percent lighter, 13 percent cheaper and three times stronger ,” says Alton Herndon, president of Bertram Yacht, explaining that the new location enables Bertram to partner with Vectorworks to build fiberglass parts with resin infusion. Less resin and a higher percentage of fiberglass in the laminate creates lighter, stronger parts. The next Bertram 64 will be the first infused hull as the company switches manufacturing process during 2013.

“ It is all an improvement with a reduction in weight and a double hull safety idea ,” says Herndon, who left the helm at Hatteras to spearhead Bertram’s move to the expanded capabilities offered at Merritt Island. “We have the strongest hull-deck joint in the industry. The composite panel has two skins, kind of a foam cored sandwich laminate. It makes for a quieter ride, with nothing moving or creaking in the cabins .”

The Bertram 540, a New Classic After nearly 30 years, the company has reintroduced the classic Bertram 54, one of the most sought after models of its time, with a centerline fuel tank creating a zero-trim that further enhances the ride, and a sharp bow, long waterline, and deep vee hull for extra handling in open water. The 540 has a sleek, contemporary shearline and modern onboard amenities like stereo systems with iPod hookups integrated into the bridge, salon and cockpit.

This yacht combines the sea keeping ability of a fishing vessel with the ultra luxury and comfort of a cruising yacht. The forward wrap around window provides breathtaking views and allows loads of natural light to shine into the interior. The ambiance with the open salon layout provides for great entertaining on the open water. Port and starboard stateroom windows also lend natural light and exquisite sea views.

Radiant white oak lends elegance, and the galley area features a beautiful open bar area to ease movement between the salon and the cockpit entry way for a more open entertaining and dining experience. An aft cockpit window retracts into the bulkhead, providing easy galley access to pass through food and drinks.

This yacht features underwater exhaust and storage space to hold up to 25 fishing rods. Additional tackle storage is incorporated into the mezzanine along with a baitwell and freezer. The transom fish box can be converted into another baitwell or icemaker with ease. The fish boxes on the cockpit floor have been made larger and deeper and are now placed on each side of the fighting chair for easier access from the transom door.

Re-establishing the Brand Bertram has stood the test of time, building a loyal base of repeat customers who trust their purpose-built vessels in the most hostile conditions. Today, Bertram is determined to stand out and become more of a standalone business entity from its Italian holding company, Ferretti Group, according to James Henderson, president and CEO of Ferretti Group America . (China’s largest bulldozer maker bought a controlling interest in Ferretti last year.)

“I think Bertram suffered a little bit in the last decade,” Henderson says. “Jeep is owned by Fiat, but everyone knows Jeep as its own, iconic brand. It is known as an American brand. Bertram is an American brand [like that].”

The Legacy & The Legend

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Boat companies spend good money creating, tweaking and reinforcing their images, and Bertram Yacht, as part of the glamorous Ferretti Group, is no stranger to sophisticated marketing strategies. They are also, however, the recipient of the kind of dock chatter that complements and even outdoes any Madison Avenue efforts. Just ask anyone with a passion for powerboats; they will tell you what Bertram has always been about: the ride.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with two very special boats that allowed me the opportunity to relive a bit of the company’s past and gain a sense of its future-a vintage 31 Bertram and a new 57 Bertram fitted with Anti-Rolling Gyros (ARGs). Bertram Yacht exists because of the 31—a single design that revolutionized offshore powerboat racing and changed the way yachtsmen used their boats. It still gives me chills to think that the 31 Bertram would not have come to be if not for a racing sailor’s chance encounter with an odd boat. It was a breezy July morning in 1958 off Newport, Rhode Island-perfect weather for the scheduled America’s Cup trials. Dick Bertram and the sailors in his charge on the 12-meter Vim were distracted from their duties by a 23-foot powerboat slicing though the 6-foot seas at speeds that would have splintered the designs typical of the day. They took a second look.

The little boat was in fact the prototype of a new design by C. Raymond Hunt that was serving as tender to the 12-meter Easterner-also designed by Hunt. Though his formal education ended at prep school, Hunt was thoroughly at home at sea and approached a wide variety of design challenges with practical experience and a flair for the unconventional. It is really quite amazing that at about the same time he penned what would become known as the Deep-V, he also doodled the soon-to-be 13-foot Boston Whaler on an envelope. Those are arguably two of the most influential and successful designs in a generation.

Dick Bertram recognized this genius and took time off from his yacht brokerage business to build a 31-foot version of Hunt’s new Deep-V design. Christened Moppie (Bertram’s wife’s nickname), the boat was conceived as a utility but plans soon changed when the boat’s ability caught the attention of Bertram’s racing buddies. After Moppie won the 1960 Miami-Nassau race, setting a new record in the worst conditions of the event’s history, the future of the Deep-V was secured. At the time, Bertram is said to have commented “so many yachtsmen were waving their checkbooks at him” that he had no choice but to build boats.

ertram Yachts was launched in 1960 in Miami with a 31, not unlike the 1969 model I enjoyed spending time aboard thanks to her owner, Jon Burkard, vice president of the Allied Richard Bertram Marine Group. While this boat sold new for about $22,000, like so many 31s it has been lovingly restored and is worth many times that amount today. While others had fiddled with high-deadrise designs, Hunt perfected the form. The 31’s incredible ability in heavy seas changed the float plans of a generation of yachtsmen. Bertram salesmen would routinely demonstrate her by running in big seas-at times, with no hands on the wheel. Aboard a 31, fishing days that were marginal in terms of weather were comfortable, and days that were out of the question were doable.

Over the years I have spent many hours on 31s and there is no other boat quite like her. With 22 degrees of deadrise, the 31 levels head seas and tracks down sea as though she were on rails. She is not perfect: Those steep sections consume horsepower. (Twin big-block gas engines suit her, as do modern lightweight diesels.) She can be surprisingly wet when the seas kick up, which is why add-on spray rails are popular. At rest in a beam sea, she is tender compared to boats with less deadrise. Still, she’s as capable and safe a boat in heavy seas as you will find-and she is a thrill to command and a pleasure to look at.

With the 31’s success, Bertram’s product line quickly expanded, as did the length overall of its models. By the late 1970s, new designs on the drawing board exceeded 50 feet and Bertram’s design team knew that they had reached the practical limits of the true Deep-V form. High deadrise angles (above 20 degrees) were great for taming seas but the after sections of larger boats tended to stay in the water and lift was far more important-particularly given the horsepower available and the speed requirements at the time. It was at this juncture that Bertram’s engineer, Lee Dana, and designer, Dave Napier, crafted a 54-foot design that would earn the same respect the 31 had garnered two decades earlier.

Introduced in 1981, the 54 had deep forward sections, a shallow keel and a more efficient 17-degree deadrise at the transom. This form blended perfectly with her stout 75,000-pound displacement and many (including yours truly) considered the 54 one of the best “sea boats” ever designed. Like the 31 she seemed oblivious to head seas, yet she was dry. She was also far stiffer at rest than earlier, deeper deadrise Bertram designs and with a reasonable amount of power (800 hp, Detroit Diesel 12V71s) she could cruise at around 24 knots. She seemed her best in nasty seas and such conditions are still referred to by fans of the marque as “Bertram Weather.”

Sales of the 54 helped keep Bertram’s production line moving during difficult years in the 1990s and when the Ferretti Group acquired the company in 1998, the 54’s design was as valuable an asset as the brand. Ferretti wisely left the hull as it was and recast the design’s styling and interior. After all, like the 31, it was the 54’s comfort and performance at sea that attracted fishing and cruising owners.

The 57 is created out of the 54’s DNA, which made good sense, as adding a bit of length to a planning hull without adding significant weight often benefits performance. The 57 we ran for this story was fresh from the factory with a pair of 1,650 hp Caterpillar C32s. She is capable of a maximum speed of 39 knots with a full tower and fishing gear.

The 57 is indeed an impressive boat on face value and this was the reason Bertram chose her as a test platform for the ARG system-a technology they believe may revolutionize comfort at sea. When Norberto Ferretti learned of Mitsubishi’s ARG system he installed it on his personal yacht-a 30-meter Ferretti Custom Line Navetta. Given the success of this application, José Millan, Bertram’s product development manager, knew it was only a matter of time before the system would find its way onto a Bertram. “No matter how good a hull is, slow trolling and live-bait fishing in rough seas can tire you or worse-fishboats seem an ideal application for the ARG technology,” said Millan.

Millan supervised the installation of two ARG MSM-2000s in the 57. Each of the 630-pound units consists of an electric motor driving a gimbaled flywheel contained neatly in a 36.7 x 23.3 x 21.3 inch housing that is bolted securely to the main stringers and positioned aft of the engines in the machinery space. Unlike active fin stabilizers, nothing protrudes from the hull, so, other than the added weight and a 6 kW thirst for power, there is no performance penalty. A remote panel on the flybridge has an on/off switch and two indicator lights that monitor system status. According to Millan, Mitsubishi technicians insist that no maintenance is required, “simply switch it on and switch it off.”

We did just that for a day of fishing and while we chose to switch the system on dockside there is no problem doing so at sea if desired. From start-up, the flywheel takes 30 minutes to reach operational speed (4400 rpm) and 45 minutes to come to a stop when it is turned off. I frankly did not notice the whirling noise the ARGs made until we shut the engines down offshore for a bit of snapper fishing. The sound is not loud or objectionable but it is noticeable. I am pleased to report that it did not seem to bother the snapper-we caught our share.

While the seas were not particularly challenging, we lay beam-to for a time to note the system’s effect. While subtle, I found the response to the 4-foot seas tangible. From still in the water, it seemed to take one roll cycle to inspire a reaction from the ARGs. After that, the amplitude of the roll was noticeably reduced. Millan indicated that this sensation increases with wave height, particularly in light-ship conditions. Mitsubishi’s data on the 57 suggests a roll suppression rate of 44 percent at rest in a beam sea and 52 percent at trolling speed.

While the ARG is an impressive technology and one that has been applied successfully on commercial vessels, it will most likely take a particularly sea-sensitive yachtsman or mate to invest, as it will be an expensive option on the 57. With that said, in terms of comfort, ARG(s) can make a great boat better. Given the contrast of the 31 and the 57 it occurs to me that it is Bertram that deserves the credit-for this has been their mission from the start.

A Rising Tide: Inside Tampa’s Bertram Yachts

By mckenna kelley, bertram yachts had plenty of options when planning to bring the classic designs and sleek engineering of their nearly 60-year-old boat brand fully into the 21st century..

Though many of the world’s top yachts are built in places like Germany and the Netherlands, Bertram made a some-what unique choice for the location of its new ship-yard in 2016: a 120,000 square-foot bayfront facility near Tampa’s West Shore Boulevard.

“My first choice was Florida,” said Beniamino Gavio — of the Italian corporation Gavio Group, which acquired Bertram Yachts in 2015 — in a statement announcing the new relocation. “We believe that Bertram belongs to this country. Bertam started in Miami, and we want to keep Bertram in Florida in order to preserve the connection with its history.”

Bertram CEO Peter Truslow says the move to Tampa was a major part of the company’s efforts to build a better Bertram.

“Bertram considered waterfront facilities throughout the Southeast but chose Tampa because of the incredible boat-building workforce and supplier base in this area,” he adds. “Miami was no longer a practical place to build boats, but it was important for us to stay in Florida. Our shipyard, right at the Gandy Bridge, is a perfect place to launch and test the new Bertrams. It’s also a perfect lo-cation to service the growing number of large yachts in this area.”

To that end, Bertram has launched two new models built here in Tampa — the Bertram 35 and Bertram 61 , with a 50-foot model expected later this year. The 35 is a modern spin on Bertram’s original model, the 31-foot Moppie, that company founder and powerboat racer Dick Bertram used to win the 1961 Miami-Nassau Race in four hours and 20 minutes.

In many ways, the Bertram 31 seems custom-designed for Tampa’s lifestyle — elegant, yet practical. Built with what the company deems “superior fishing capabilities and innovative luxuries,” the 31 is made for deepwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico but is also fitted with deep propeller pockets sized to allow for flats fishing in Tampa Bay’s shallower waters. Features like the 12-foot, 5-inch beam and deep-v hull design (which provides a smoother ride) also set the model apart. Inside the boat, a panoramic and frameless window lets natural light into the galley (with Amtico flooring, Corian countertops, a SubZero refrigerator-freezer combo, and a two-burner induction stove) and open state-room, making the space comfortable and livable for both serious fishermen and leisure cruisers.

Bertram also gives boat owners a variety of ways to customize their crafts; among other fixtures, the exterior paint colors, interior upholstery, configurations, seating arrangements and hardtops are chosen by each buyer. The company has delivered about 20 Bertram 35 models around the globe since 2017.

“The new 35 represents the absolute best of both worlds,” Truslow said in a statement on the boat’s construction. “Yes, the 35 is comfortable, but she’s also as rugged and offshore capable as any Bertram ever built.”

Perhaps most importantly for Tampa, Bertram has hired more than 100 locals — including shipbuilders, engineers and customer service professionals — to support the company’s rapid growth, with plans to hire for more than 100 additional positions. Bertram is also contributing to Florida’s $10 billion boating industry, the country’s largest. In 2017, $3 billion was spent on new power boats and accessories in Florida.

“Florida is the No. 1 market for boats in the world. The state’s incredible growth in population and wealth will support Bertram for many years to come,” Truslow says. “There is a strong boat-building culture in this area that we are keeping alive, and local resources like the universities and MacDill Air Force Base help support our hiring efforts.”

Bertram 46 - Hurricane Andrew

Yep, this is our introductory photo to Bertram Yachts. Not very complimentary? Read on because in the aftermath of hurricanes Andrew and Opal, most Bertrams survived  with as little damage as this one did.

Bertram has a well-deserved reputation for building rugged, high quality boats. Bertram has an interesting history, for it was one of the three first production boat companies to start up in 1961 along with Hatteras and the Henry Hinckley Company, all   known for producing top quality boats that have survived to this day.  Well, almost, for the current status of Bertram seems to be that it is teetering on the edge of extinction.

The success of Bertram came about as the result of Dick Bertram's commitment to quality, Ray Hunts revolutionary deep vee hull design, and the timeliness of Castro's overthrow of the Bastista government which brought a flood of cheap labor to Miami. This was augmented by the fact that the Cuban refugees that got jobs at Bertram usually kept them for a lifetime, meaning that the turnover at Bertram was nearly zilch, meaning that Bertram employees were well trained and knew what they were doing.

More that three decades later, the downfall of Bertram was probably that Bertrams ended up being built by Cubans for Cubans, for the later management made the disastrous mistake of concentrating solely on the sport fishing market by completely abandoning the cruising market. When the '89 recession hit, they ended up being in the wrong niche market, from which this large operation could not recover.

Although Bertram did produce many motor yachts, these were half-hearted efforts that often resulted in poorly performing boats based on a deep vee hull that resulted in extremely inefficient fuel hogs that required too much horsepower to drive. Add to that their marketing feel far short so that Bertram ultimately defaulted the entire extremely lucrative motor yacht business to Hatteras, a factor which insured Hatteras's success.

The reputation of Bertram is built on rough and rugged sport fishermen based on the original Ray Hunt design that produced boats that keep on going when others had to put into port. But the downside of a very deep vee hull is that they are inefficient and require a lot more horsepower, as well as fuel, to drive them.  This also resulted in a lower profile hull that significantly limits interior space, a factor which gave Hatteras room to compete in the fish boat market by making beamier boats with bigger and more plush interiors that pleased the ladies.  Apparently Hatteras wisely recognized that the lady of the house

Interiors on these boats are often downright spartan. Not for nothing are they often referred to as macho boats, what with all the formica you'll find on any Bertram made before 1990. The good news is that this can easily be changed by covering with veneers, vinyls or fabrics  over the mica, which can transform some of these dreary interiors in no time.

This lead to Bertram and Hatteras becoming arch rivals with Hatteras ultimately emerging as the winner. While the Bertram crowd rather arrogantly looked down their noses at the folks in High Point, Hatteras sales soared while Bertrams remained relatively flat. Until the '89 recession when they went to zero  from which they never recovered.

While Bertram is often the quality standard by which all others are judged, you may be surprised to hear me say that that reputation is not always well deserved. While I would ascribe some of the industry's best R&D and quality control to Bertram, these boats are not the floating tanks like many people believe. For over two decades Lee Dana was the chief of engineering at Bertram, and from what we've seen of these boats Lee clearly knew where to put the beef and where to take it out.  For the fact is that with a deep vee hull, the weight of these boats had to be kept down if you were going to get any kind of speed out of them, and that is a lesson Bertram learned early on. Model for model, you may be surprise to find that Bertrams are lighter than a Hatteras, especially in hull laminate thickness.

Throughout these pages, we've shown you a lot of pictures of boats that have gone through  hurricances. After seeing so many of these boats bashed and battered, we know how they're built, and we can tell you that they really are tough cookies. These hull laminates are no thicker, or at least not much thicker,  than anybody else's, but it is the engineering expertise - often utterly lacking in so many others -  that makes the difference. These hulls are plain old woven roving construction and hold up better than all the exotic materials you hear about put together. When you hear builders touting the latest and greatest high tech stuff, we say HOOEY! And we'll be pleased to show you the proof, because its contained right here on the pages of this web site. That's why, over and over again, we show you pictures of busted up boats. The only way to test 'em is to break 'em, and that's what storms do.

You may have heard that Bertrams don't blister. For the most part, that is true, although there have been a few. As one who has occasionally wandered through the Bertram yard, we know that one of the reasons is quality control. For example, a green dye was usually added to the resin to help show up incomplete wet out. Also, it was Lee Dana himself who told us about tank coating, the process of using a high quality resin on the exterior and lower quality in the later laminations. No doubt the wrong resin occasionally got sprayed at the wrong time.

This is not to say that you'll find many Bertrams falling apart, although that is not without precedent. As the photos on this page shows, we've seen a lot of Bertrams wrecked by hurricanes so we know how they're built. As a rule, these solid fiberglass hulls will outperform any cored hull under any conditions. As with Hatteras, we've seen dozens of Bertrams survive storms that destroyed all their neighbors. If the ability to survive after hitting a coral head or taking a wave over the stern concerns you, these are the kind of boats to consider. Just be aware that, as with all other builders, mistakes are made. As with all builders, occasionally they do some pretty dumb things - like bolting a cleat to a block of wood that is basically glued to the hull, as you will find in the 42C, and as discovered after hurricane Andrew as all the 42's ripped their cleats out.

Both companies wisely stayed away from exotic materials and continued to build from basic roving and balsa cored construction, decisions that spared them any costly mistakes. Well, almost. In fact, both companies experimented with foam cores in the mid 1980's with both efforts resulting in failures, both in their 38' line of sport fishermen. The experiments quickly came to an end and was not tried again.

One of the worst things you'll find about Bertram are the generators placed under the cockpit decks which, up until the early 80's were wood. Needless to say, the decks leaked like crazy and ruined the generators. Battery placement was usually a nightmare, and if you don't maintain the batteries you end up with a lot of dead ones and frequent replacements. Engine room layouts are usually quite a bit less than ideal, usually cramped and  hard to maintain. Rarely was consideration given toward maintenance, which no doubt contributes greatly to why so many of these older boats are so poorly maintained.

So what about buying used Bertrams today? Much of the fleet is now finding its way to the back lots of boat yards. Prices are down far enough that people who really can't afford them have bought them, only to find that  the upkeep of these aging yachts, particularly the immensely popular but fuel-hoggy 46 Convertible, is a whole lot more than they expected. The small boats, and the more popular 37 and 54 Convertible are still hot items on the market and command steep prices.  But probably one of the best values to be had these days is the rugged 42 Convertible which is not so big and heavy that you need monster diesels to make them go. The 33 & 37 are great boats that initially carried high price tags made even higher by the addition of towers and all the bells and whistles. Yet as time goes on, these prices steadily decline, bringing some of these gems within reach of the less-than-rich.

Unless you're got the bucks, beware of buying diesel Bertrams.  They are hard on engines and keeping them going gets downright expensive. The best values for the budget conscious are with the gas engine boats. But make sure that your choice isn't underpowered because over-worked gas engines don't last long.

Bertram Yachts

Redefining an icon. leveraging history without being stale..

Trust — hard to earn and easy to lose. So when the iconic Bertram Yachts had all but faded away, new leadership came to us to help bring the yacht branding back to life. We needed to reestablish a relationship with die-hard fans while being able to speak to potential new ones. It all began with the launch of the new 35 – a yacht that echoes the legacy while bringing the brand to the present.

Bertram brand booklet

Forever original.

We kicked off with a repositioning that could unite the brand’s history and future. Something that spoke to what brought Bertram to life in the first place, what made the brand “Forever Original,” and that could stand out from other yacht advertising efforts already saturating the market.

Our studios team had a 3-day shoot in the Florida Keys to capture dynamic shots of the 35, highlighting the boat’s personality, power, and finishes. Drone photography heightened our ability to create eye-catching pieces that show off performance without having to rattle off statistics.

Just like crafting a quality vessel, quality yacht branding and advertising is all in details. Red staples mirror pops of the bold color found below deck.

What comes next?

With this refreshed brand in place, we’re collaborating with their team to find new ways to activate it through initiatives like updating their website, identifying partnerships, revamping boat show experiences, creating a video series, designing new apparel, and even updating their Tampa warehouse.

Learn More About Bertram And Find Your Next Boat

Richard Bertram Yachts was established in 1947 by Richard “Dick” Bertram in Hialeah, Florida. The prototype Moppie was entered in the 1960 Miami-Nassau Race with Dick Bertram and Sam Griffith as co-drivers and Charlton Mitchell as navigator. The Moppie won beating the 2nd place Hunt Design Aqua Hunter by 2 hours. The prototype was sanded smooth, turned into a plug, and a mold was cast. The first fiberglass Bertram, Glass Moppie was christened in December 1960 in Hialeah, Florida by Pauline “Moppie” Bertram. Bertram’s legacy is their original deep-vee hull performance. Bertram Yachts has made the SeaKeeper standard on all new boats to eliminate boat roll. The New Bertram 35s, 61s, and 50s will also carry a SeaKeeper as a standard spec. Bertram Yachts have built high-quality boats for the US Coast Guard and Military over the last five decades.

In 1999, Ferretti’s first Bertram model was the 390 and was a 510 based on the 50 Bertram hull. The 390 was a three-stateroom model with two heads while everyone else was still doing over/under bunks in the third cabin. The Bertram 60 received a redesigned window shape and they become frameless in 2000. The Bertram 570 was introduced in 2002 and is a stretched 54 with a mawkish superstructure styled by Zuccon. The 570 received reengineering which included switching to a single amidships fuel tank. The Bertram 630 was introduced in 2003 featuring a spiral stairwell to the Flybridge with the MTU engine package, the 630 runs 40 Knots. The Bertram 540 was introduced in 2008 and is the first Bertram with an Aft Galley. The Bertram 800 was introduced in 2010 and is Bertram’s biggest boat by far. Hull #1 went to the Bahamas and won the Bertram-Hatteras Shootout XXX. In 2018, Bertram Yachts is now calling Marlin Bay Yacht Club as their homeport in the Florida Keys in Marathon, Florida. Two of the full-service slips will be home to the new 35’ and 61’. Also in 2018, Bertram Yachts expanded their facility in Tampa, Florida where the new Bertram models are being built.
