My Avelinda was built in 1982 at the Ta Chiao yard, one of 48 Tanton 43 cat ketches built at various locations in Taiwan over a period of several years. They appear occasionally on the used-boat market on either side of $100,000.

The Tanton 43 has a round stern, which gives the hull something of the appearance of the Valiant 40, but the likeness ends there. The sail area is divided almost equally between the mainsail and mizzen; both of these are set on freestanding carbon-fiber masts with wishbone booms. Handling the sails, therefore, is never overwhelming, even when sailing shorthanded. Tacking requires little more than a turn of the wheel, and the boat tracks so well that I rarely bother with the autopilot. The absence of standing rigging allows the boat effortlessly to sail wing and wing.

High lifelines and 4-inch bulwarks surround the deck. With its long, wide seats and built-in table, the large cockpit provides additional living space, but even with a high bridgedeck and large drains, it’s large for offshore work.

The engine control panel, mounted close to the cockpit sole on the side of the pedestal, is difficult to monitor. Below the waterline, the hull is solid fiberglass, and above it’s balsa-cored. The teak deck was laid on a balsa-cored deck and requires regular maintenance.

Down below is wall-to-wall teak and mahogany. In the bow is a cabin with a V-berth, a bench seat, and a large hanging locker. The saloon seats eight between an L-shaped dinette and the settee opposite. To port is the head with a full shower. The galley-with plenty of counter space, storage, and light-is to starboard.

A 70-horsepower Yanmar is mounted below the centerline galley counter, and removable panels on all sides provide for excellent access. The portside aft cabin has access to the head and to the base of the companionway opposite the nav station. All lockers and floorboards have locks to prevent them opening in a knockdown.

Without wanting to hurt Avelinda’s feelings, I have to admit that she’s not perfect, but I do understand that all boats are a compromise. While I’m happy with how the galley functions, its position between the companionway and the saloon means that it gets a lot of traffic. The nav station is conveniently located at the base of the companionway, but only a shrimp like me can sit without head banging and crouching. Maneuvering in tight quarters can be tricky; the prop is so far forward of the rudder that the boat is slow to respond at low speeds.

The biggest problem I have with my generally wonderful vessel is system overload, given the watermaker, refrigeration, and so on and the 640 amp-hours of batteries it takes to power them. The former owner, an obsessed engineer, rewired, replumbed, and repowered. Instead of drifting off to sleep with Slocum or Moitessier, I find myself reading manuals and Nigel Calder. In the morning when I wake up, the only thing I’m sure that works are the sails. I go sailing.

When Yves-Marie, Chuck and I left Dick Carter’s tower in Nahant, Massachusetts, to try it on our own I don’t think either of us knew where the future would take us in the world of yacht design. We just wanted to design boats. 

Yves-Marie had spent his years at the tower drawing hull lines for exotic IOR boats and he produced magnificent lines drawings. When he went on his own, he did a few race boats and had some success at it. But over time  Yves-Marie’s work morphed into cruising boats for home boatbuilders and custom projects. Many of his designs are for steel or aluminum construction. In keeping with those materials, the look of Yves-Marie’s boats is more purposeful than beautiful. They are masculine looking boats with rugged appearances. This recent design of Yves-Marie is inspired by North Sea and Dutch fishing boats and trawlers. Two of this design were built in Turkey in steel using CNC cutting files.

I am pretty sure that good performance is a given with any boat Yves-Marie draws. In the early 1970s Yves-Marie drew the lines for YDRA, which was considered the fastest IOR One-Tonner in the world in its day. YDRA was the boat that convinced me to seek a position with Dick Carter.

This is a pretty conventional motorsailer layout. Why do I call it a motorsailer? I use that term to define boats that have both inside and outside steering stations. Simple as that. You could argue with me but I won’t listen. There is an elevated dinette in the pilothouse. I see an area labeled “aft cabin” to port just forward of the pilothouse. Not sure what’s going on there. Perhaps there is a double berth tucked in under that raised dinette. Adjacent to that to starboard is a head and forward of that large chart table with a swivel seat. 

The main cabin looks to be a nice place to relax with deep settees. There are V-berths forward of that. All in all, it’s a well designed layout. I like the galley.

With the mast placed well aft I’d consider this rig a true cutter. The mast appears to be deck stepped with single lower spreaders and jumper struts above that to support the top of the mast. It’s kind of an unusual way to stay the rig but knowing YMT I’m sure he could explain exactly why it’s designed that way. Maybe to make it easier to lower the rig for canal cruising. The SA/D is 16.29. Yves-Marie has done a good job of integrating the proportions of this design that while purposeful, is still a handsome boat.

Yves-Marie’s construction drawings are beautiful and very well detailed, a builder’s dream and required if you are doing CNC files. The builder will not need to make many decisions.

Hope you have enjoyed this look at where my two old friends have taken their careers these last 50 years. They certainly have taken different directions and each one has been successful with that choice of work.

Tanton yacht design is 50 years old.

Very hard to believe. 

- From being 27 years old to now, and to the future.

- Making, in my field one of the oldest Design Firm in America. Sparkman and Stephens being the "doyen".

- Yes, I work mostly by myself, but at times I had very good helpers to contribute my wayward ways of going about things. 

Steve Baker of Jamestown and Jeremy McGeary come to mind. Very good indeed on the Design side.

I am not mentioning people involved with my Boat Building and Brokerage Ventures. Lets say that I also got involved with 3 start ups, others entities about boats, material and construction.

- J'ai eu le plaisir de le rencontrer en Belgique a l'époque de la construction de Cote d'Or pour Eric Tabarly 

et de mon propre Desperado par le chantier Amtec. Lui meme ayant a Catamaran de 40' en lancement.

-Plus tard, j'ai pris connaissance d'un grand  bateau de charter base sur la coque de vendredi 13 utilisée 

comme moule.

- Mais aussi avec la gentillesse de me fournir quelques plans de details d'un Catamaran Privilege, lequel 

je devais rallonger d'une manière importante.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Accommodations

The tri-cabin layout with its teak joinery has 6'6" headroom throughout.The aft stateroom is to starboard and features a queen berth, a large hanging locker and excellent storage on shelves and in drawers plus a 12V Glacier aircon. Adjoining this stateroom is a head with separate shower stall. Aft and to Port is a pilot berth, just ahead also to port is the Nav Station with a swivel chair, chart table and electronics.  

Forward of the Nav station and on the port side is the Galley. It is well laid out and provides excellent security while at sea. Double s/s sinks are located on the ship's centreline. A gimballed three burner stove with oven; recessed counter and and three drawer cabinet arrangement is built in adjacent to the stove. Glacier 12V refrigeration has both top and front opening doors and there is a deep freezer.  

The main salon has two upholstered captain's chairs to starboard with custom cabinetry outboard. To port is the U-shaped dinette that comfortably seats six adults and converts to a double berth. The locker and shelf arrangement to port above the dinette provides additional storage. Forward of the main salon is another large stateroom with vanity and a hanging locker and plenty of storage. There is a large side entry double berth to port. Just forward to port is the ensuite head with separate shower stall.

Rigging and Sails

Twin carbon fibre masts are lightweight, extremely strong and fitted into tight sleeves to the keel. The free standing masts eliminate stays and the complexities of gear and equipment. The rig technology and hull design, combined with tapered light masts have resulted in a yacht that is well balanced, efficient and economical.  Absence of shrouds means less weight aloft, along with a low center of effort means less heeling moment than a conventional rig.  The two sails are fully battened with "Antal" batt-cars which drop into sail covers with jack stays.

Cockpit and Deck Hardware

The cockpit in the aft deck has a hard top enclosure with a hatch to view the mizzen mast and clear and mesh side panels. The cockpit table houses the “on demand” water heater and navigation equipment. There is a vented locker for the propane tanks. The deck is laid out for easy movement offshore, with plenty of handholds and a clear space the move forward and aft in safety.
