Freedom Boat Club offers convenience and boating fun without hassle of boat ownership

B.J. Jordan heard from a friend in the Lake Hartwell area about a club that allows you to use boats with a membership. Lucky for Jordan, a new franchise of the Freedom Boat Club opened at Thurmond Lake last summer. 

“All you are paying for is the gas and your monthly fee, which is cheaper than all those other things,” he said. “One of the main benefits, it’s convenience. It’s a great lake, there are a lot of great things to do on the lake.” 

Since joining last year, Jordan said he has used their Freedom Boat Club boats at least 30 to 50 times taking clients on boat rides or just taking his family out on the lake. He said being part of the club is just easier than having to own a boat, maintain it, clean it and continue to spend money on a boat. 

How does it work? 

Bryan Lee, director of operations at Freedom Boat Club at Thurmond Lake and Lake Hartwell, said the club is basically an alternative to boat ownership. The club owns the boats, insures them, maintains them, stores them and keeps them clean for members to use. 

“It’s a private membership. You pay a one-time fee to get in and then you make monthly dues. Other than that, you pay for the fuel that you use,” he said. 

The one-time fee ranges in the $4,000 to $5,000 range with the monthly fee in the $350 range depending on the plan. Lee said it’s still cheaper than owning a boat and you don’t have to worry about transporting a boat or maintenance. 

“The cost is about a third of what it is for boat ownership, that’s not including if you have a fancy truck or car to tow your boat with,” Lee said. “We put brand new boats in our fleet very regularly, so you are not stuck with the same boat. We have multiple different kind of boats.” 

Why Augusta? 

Lee said they decided to open the club at Thurmond Lake after success at Lake Hartwell and because they own Clarks Hill Marina, so they decided to open their second franchise in the area. They hope the group here continues to grow. 

“We are just getting started so we are pretty early in our infancy here, as far as memberships go. We are less than 20 at that location. For every 10 members that join the club, I buy a boat,” he said. “We are religious about this; this is a formula that has been working very well since the late '80s and it is bulletproof.”

They currently have four boats, with a fifth one expected to arrive by the end of the year. Lee said they try to rotate boats out every 18 months and most of the boats they have available are fairly new. The pandemic has caused a shortage of boats, so Lee said the club is a good alternative for people who want to get out on the water. 

“This year, there is a big boat inventory issue. Manufacturers are not able to keep up with a lot of deliveries. Freedom Boat Club is a great alternative, where you don’t have all that hassle of owning a boat,” Lee said. 

Being safe on the water 

Although there are not a whole lot of requirements to become a member, Lee said they train all members with a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain before allowing use of the boats.  

Jordan said he is glad the club makes people take safety training before they are allowed on the boat. 

“Taking a boater safety course is huge, it just helps, that’s what I love about Freedom Boat Club, they make you do a training, so I know how to operate a boat,” Jordan said. 

With a number of recent drownings in the area, Jordan said it’s important for people to wear life jackets, to not drink and make sure you know what you are doing when using a boat.

Jordan hopes more people join the club, so the club at Thurmond Lake will have more boats available for members. Membership also allows members to use boats at more than 275 Freedom Boat Clubs in the U.S., Canada and France.

Guide To Sailing On Lake Hartwell

For many people, there is no better way to spend a day than sailing on Lake Hartwell. Nearly everyone who has tried it has loved navigating a sailboat, but if you haven’t tried it, it can seem intimidating.

With large, billowing sails and special jargon, one might think that learning how to sail is complicated. Thankfully, that’s not the case as sailing is not only enjoyable but accessible to many—particularly around the Lake Hartwell region.

Lake Hartwell remains one of the best sailing locations in the southeast United States. The temperate climate of the region allows enthusiasts to sail year-round. Plus, the views are hard to beat with open water edged by rugged landscape.

As Lake Hartwell is bordered by both Georgia and South Carolina, sailors can easily boat back and forth between the two states. There are few places where one can cross state lines by boat so easily—it definitely makes for a much more pleasant commute than sitting in traffic.

It is important to keep in mind that boaters have an ethical responsibility to care for the marine life around them. Keep the lake clean and it’s inhabitants safe by reducing your discharge of hazardous waste such as trash, oil, and gray water.

The Western Carolina Sailing Club

Established sailors and beginning enthusiasts alike will be glad to hear that Lake Hartwell is home to the Western Carolina Sailing Club (WCSC). The WCSC is a non-profit organization that has the mission of making sailing an enjoyable experience.

The sailing club is located right on Lake Hartwell, in the city of Anderson, South Carolina. The family-friendly organization does require membership, but the benefits are well-worth the application. You will have access to social activities and sailing events, along with several sailing-centered benefits.

Members of The Western Carolina Sailing Club receive classes and training that will increase their knowledge of boats and boat-handling abilities. Additionally, the club provides members with use of its boat storage facilities. This is a big perk for those who own a boat and need somewhere to dock.

Can you imagine yourself cruising Lake Hartwell with the wind billowing through the sails?

The club also has workshops and classes where people can learn how to sail Lake Hartwell. These courses include adult and youth lessons and all are encouraged to attend and learn. The classes include classroom instruction and practical application out on the water. Participants only need to bring a Coast Guard-approved type III lifejacket.

Take Sailing Lessons at the Big Water Sailing School

Outside of the WCSC, there are several other options for budding enthusiasts to learn how to sail Lake Hartwell. The Big Water Sailing School is one of the most popular local spots for people to learn the sport, while also enjoying the lake.

Big Water Sailing School is appropriately named as it is housed at Big Water Marina, a beautiful wooded cove at the south end of the lake. The school teaches both basic coastal sailing and offshore sailing—the perfect opportunity to explore the wooded islands and inlets around the lake.

The school has been opened since 1999, and the school’s director has over 40 years of experience. It offers American Sailing Association certified courses such as basic keelboat sailing, bareboat cruising, and coastal navigation.

All 2 or 3 bedroom homes have a private balcony or a patio in back of the unit with lake views. There are 4 courtesy / swim docks, a club house, and swimming pool for homeowners and their invited guests to enjoy.

In addition, Harbor Gate has a private marina with 32 boat slips for members only. **NOTE**: Not all homes own a boat slip in our marina (32 boat slips, 52 homes).

Welcome to Portland Yacht Club

Portland Yacht Club is Oregon’s oldest yacht club and was founded in 1908 as the Willamette Motor Boat Club, and remains today as the premier club in the greater Portland area.   Located on NE Marine Drive on the banks of the Columbia River, the club offers open moorage for sailboats, boathouses for powerboats, and open docks for both.  The moorage facilities include private fuel dock and pump-out station. Club members have access to the Willow Bar Outstation located 12 miles downstream on Sauvie Island.   The Clubhouse facilities include the outdoor patio, main bar, grand ballroom and adjacent dining room with food and beverage service offered six days a week.  In addition, the club’s frequent activities include a full range of events, many of which are family oriented.
