2013 Catamaran Cruisers Trimaran Harborcraft 2013 Catamaran Cruisers Trimaran HarborcraftUnbelievable price! Still comes with the full factory engine warranty.Check out the videos! The HarborCraft Coastal Cruiser was designed with a price point that shows perceived value. Ergonomics were very high on the design priorities, such as the ability to entertain many guest at once, ease of body movement, wide walkways, large expansive forward & upper deck and ease of handling. Standard amenities that are normally found as options on much more expensive boats. Speed and frugality unequaled by other boats her size. She’s truly a fresh breath of “MARINE AIR”. There is simply no other boat on the market that we could find that gives you so much for so little.Because of the current price of gasoline, we picked the fuel efficient maintenance free (for the first 300 hrs, then only minor maintenance thereafter) Evinrude E-Tec engine as our standard engine(s) choice. Of course we will offer as an option other brands but the Evinrude’s are light weight, create more power out of the hole, never need engine oil changes and offer COUNTER ROTATING propellers which really aids to the maneuverability during docking. No matter which brand of outboard you pick, they allow our boat to go into places that other boats this size with inboards or I.O.(s) can’t because our engines can be lifted nearly all the way out of the water without damaging items such as U-joints, etc (just leave the water pickup fins deep enough to pick up cooling water). You will no longer have that musty smell coming from the bilges into your living space nor will you have to scrub the bilge because there are none. The fuel tanks are where they should be, outside the cabin. (Who wants to sleep on top of gasoline tanks? Duh?)In the event of any prop damage you are able to change your own props without getting the boat lifted.I can go on and on about the benefits of our boat over other boats but to sum it all up, it’s very simple. Our boat is the boating version of what the automobile industry calls the “CROSSOVER”. It is designed for the seasoned boater. It’s going to be very easy to market this boat. You either understand it or you don’t. It’s really that simple!!

Best Houseboats – Top 10 Options for Every Budget

The Zion

Stardust Cruisers Houseboat

Catamaran Cruiser

Catamaran Cruiser

Chris Riley

Approximately 71 percent of the Earth is covered by water. So, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with the idea of building a houseboat. At this point, you might be wondering what the difference between that and a liveaboard boat is.

A liveaboard boat is essentially any kind of watercraft that you can live in full time. A houseboat, on the other hand, is a very specific type of liveaboard boat that’s used as an individual’s primary residence. Its construction and overall look mirror that of a conventional land-based house. The only difference being – it is designed to float on water.

Houseboats are not what they were a few decades ago. They are now luxurious contemporary structures whose elaborate designs rival some of the best land-based homes in the world today.

If this is the lifestyle you envision for yourself and your family, we’ve rounded up the 10 best houseboats in the market today. We’ve also put together some useful tips you can use to help you pick the best one.

The Zion is the ultimate all-American houseboat. This 14’ x 14’ floating home comes with two bedrooms and a loft area, all of which can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests at any given time. It has high ceilings and lots of windows that bathe the space in natural light.

You’ll particularly enjoy the view from the private rear deck in the master bedroom, where you can sit and enjoy your morning cup of coffee as you watch the sunrise. Alternatively, you could delight in a glass of bubbly as you watch the sun go down in the evening. It is a sight to behold.

Other standard features of the Zion include a massive front deck that fits a hot tub, a full bar, and a barbecue grill. It also has a fully-equipped state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen that comes outfitted with stainless steel appliances to help you whip up delicious meals in a jiffy. As far as functionality goes, the Zion delivers on all fronts.

 The American Houseboat  →

If space and luxury are what you seek, then you’ll love what the Stardust Cruisers Houseboat has to offer. It fuses a conventional houseboat’s unique and cozy features with the style and finesse of a luxury yacht.

The boat is made of aluminum and fiberglass panels that are 100% wood-free. If you value improved economy and handling, the vessel is available in V-drive power and direct drive configurations for you to choose from.

 Trifecta Houseboats  →

● Increased economy ● It is a hybrid of a luxury yacht and houseboat ● Fully-customizable

● May not be suited to offshore cruising

If you’re looking for an affordable houseboat, the Catamaran Cruiser is a great option to consider. This 10’ x 35’ floating home was built with the first-time houseboat owner in mind.

Don’t let its small size fool you. It comes with a spacious galley that features a full-sized fridge and a roomy bathroom with enough space to maneuver. For those days you want to enjoy the outdoor views of the water surrounding your home, the boat has a spacious 300 sq. ft. deck that’s perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

How to Choose the Best Houseboats – Buyer’s Guide

catamaran houseboat

As a rule of thumb, there are three main factors you need to keep in mind when choosing the best houseboats.

First, you need to pick the right-sized boat. Most marinas across the country have a policy that prohibits boat owners from having more than 12 people on board while the watercraft is in motion. You also need to pick a size that addresses the privacy needs of those who will be living aboard.

The second consideration is your budget. The bigger the boat is and the more amenities it comes with, the pricier you can expect it to be. Luxury houseboats also tend to cost tremendously more than their conventional non-luxurious counterparts.

Be sure to factor in the overall costs associated with owning the boat as well. These include repair and maintenance fees, marina fees, and boat insurance.

Finally, pick a houseboat with the amenities that reflect the kind of lifestyle you want to live. Most boats come with the basics you would expect to find in any land-based home.

However, others have luxury add-ons like fire pits, hot tubs, water slides, etc. Consider the needs and desires of the people you intend to have on board before you settle on a specific houseboat.

Embrace the Boating Lifestyle

Other than the fact that you’re exempt from paying property taxes, there are several perks of living on a houseboat. Not only do you get to wake up to an amazing view every day, but the peace of mind you get and the serenity of being surrounded by water is like nothing else.

We hope you found this review helpful. Any of the boat manufacturers detailed in this guide would be an excellent place to kick off your hunt for the best houseboats the industry has to offer.

In the meantime, check out our review of the best powerboats for 2020 . What we found might surprise you.

Unless you want to move a boat overland, the best place to start looking is at the lake(s) you want to live on. However, and this is only my opinion, I’ve been looking at Catamaran Cruisers and think they make a really quality houseboat for an incredibly affordable price. They’re not super luxurious, but they’re comfortable and they really hold their value. When used models come on the market, they rarely last more than a few days before they’re sold.

There a a lot of houseboat choices out there. I am in the trailerable category. 8 1/2 ft wide by 27-32 ft long. I like the idea of being able to haul in and out and store at home. As well as travel with the boat and camp. Most houseboats are manufactured mid to souther Atlantic states. I am in very upstate NY, Lake Champlain. Any pre-owned or sell by owner sites to keep an eye on will be welcome.

7 Best Houseboat Manufacturers and Brands for Every Budget

If you live on a protected waterway and want the most comfortable living space, a houseboat is the answer to your dreams. These vessels aren’t built for crossing oceans, and that’s a good thing. It means that the design can focus on living accommodations–houseboats are the RVs of the boating world.

Here’s a look at the best houseboat manufacturer options out there, with some custom houseboat, affordable houseboat, and luxury houseboat choices.

What Is a Houseboat?

Standard features of a typical houseboat, types and styles of houseboats, is houseboat living right for you, small houseboat manufacturer faqs, best houseboat manufacturers.

Because they are most popular on lakes and rivers, styles of houseboats tend to be associated with a particular region. Huge vacation home “party barges” populate the Western US lakes, pontoon houseboats come from the Eastern US lakes and rivers, and beefy-hulled cruising houseboats stick to the coasts.

Finding the right one for you is doubly difficult since so many houseboat builders come and go. It’s always best to start with used boat listings before working up to new boats. Many houseboats are conversions or custom builds, so keep that in mind. Here are a few of the best houseboat manufacturers, some new and some used.

One of the most recognizable brand names in the business is Gibson houseboats . These beefy vessels are common on coastal waters where folks want the comfort of a lake-style houseboat but need something more seaworthy than pontoons.

The company has been making houseboats since 1968. Production stopped due to the 2008 recession, but the company was bought in 2017 by Kelly and Pam Cawthorne. They moved the company to South Dakota and currently offer seven models from 37 to 59 feet long.

At the moment, all new boats are custom-built. But the long-lived company has many examples on the water, so it’s rare to find a houseboat marina without a few examples. Likewise, used boats are common and represent every budget, size range, and amenity you could ask for.

Gibson houseboats feature seaworthy fiberglass hulls and Mercruiser inboard-outboard power.

Bluewater Yachts – Top Coastal Cruising Houseboat

Unfortunately, Bluewater is no longer in business. It was founded in the 1950s and was a three-generation family business in Ontario. Over the years, the company made boats from 35 to 70 feet long, all made with a traditional motor yacht configuration but with added living space. Unfortunately, the company was sold to new owners in 2011 and doesn’t appear to be in operation.

But you can still find plenty of examples on the used market. Their unique combination of houseboat living space and cruising fiberglass hull make these boats appealing, especially if you’re looking for a boat with better seaworthiness than the typical boxy houseboat.

These boats have interior appointments to match their yacht-like exteriors. Joinery is well done, with beautiful galleys featuring stainless appliances and stone countertops. In the world of houseboats, Bluewater certainly tips the scale towards the “boat” but retains the space of the “house.”

Destination Yachts makes party boats, houseboats, and floating condos. Their focus is on lake boats. The V-series boats are their largest, with an 18-foot beam and lengths ranging from 55 to 100 feet. Their vessels have an open floor plan and focus on maximizing outdoor “party” space. The Top Deck models are all open – large pontoon boats with upper patio levels. Deck models come between 35 and 55 feet.

Destination’s floating condos lean toward a traditional pontoon houseboat with aluminum hulls and a cottage look. There’s more enclosed space, making them more appropriate for full-time living. Condos are available between 35 and 65 feet long.

The company was founded in 1999 and has made about 300 vessels over two decades. These boats are high-quality and well finished, and suited to any purpose.

Far and away from the offshore sailing and cruising cats that cross oceans, Catamaran Cruisers makes traditional pontoon-style houseboats and Aqua Lodges. The company prefers the term “catamaran” since the hulls are fiberglass and have hard chines like planing hull power boats. They cut through a chop better than rounded aluminum pontoons.

The Catamaran Cruiser floor plans have spacious living areas that are ready to be furnished however you see fit. That way, these boats can be used as a full-time residence, hunting or fishing camp, or weekend retreat on the lake. Small and simple outboard motors power all models.

Their boat decks are sized with beams from 8 to 14 feet and lengths from 26 to 50. Eight-foot wide models are designed to be trailerable.

Aqua Lodges ditch the traditional, boxy houseboat look for a cuter seaside cottage vibe. The customer market for their lodges is marina owners, who might see using the lodge as a short-term rental to make more money than they would with regular slip holders. Think of them as boat-tels or Airbnbs on the water.

Harbor Cottage boats are built on barge hulls and can be powered by small outboard motors. The house is a Cape Cod-style two-level cottage in three sizes: the Two-Story Houseboat, the Five Bedroom Houseboat, and the Tiny Boat. The company also makes the more traditional Summersun Houseboat.

Harbor Cottages are built near Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. You can rent one at Lee’s Ford Marina on Lake Cumberlake, the so-called “Houseboat Capital of the World.”

Harbor Cottage houseboat manufacturer

Trifecta is the Kentucky-based parent company of three leaders in the USA houseboat market: Thoroughbred Houseboats, Stardust Cruisers, and Sumerset Houseboats. The company builds and restores yachts on a custom basis for maximum customer satisfaction. All boats are essentially the same–large fiberglass or aluminum-hulled houseboats and party boats suitable for inland cruising. Some have motor yacht styling, while others are pontoon-based houseboats. Most are larger and more luxurious than other manufacturers.

For example, Trifecta’s current LUX series is especially focused on luxury. The smallest model is 18 by 77 feet, powered by dual Mercruiser 250-horsepower sterndrives. The largest is 20 by 90. While the offerings from Trifecta are limited to custom orders, you can find examples from each of these brands on the used market.

Sun Tracker Party Cruiser – Small Pontoon Houseboats

Sun Tracker is known for its trailerable aluminum pontoon boats. The company has in the past built small houseboats, however. They were known as the “Party Cruiser.” These small, trailerable houseboats better qualify as a pontoon boat with bathroom .

All About New Houseboat Manufacturers

Houseboats are all about comfortable living on the water. Their size and amenities vary just like any other type of vessel, so figuring out which one is for you is always a balance between how big you can handle, how much you can afford to spend, and how many people you want to comfortably accommodate.

Best Houseboat Brands And Manufacturers For Every Budget

The word houseboat conjures different images for different people. Generally, it covers any vessel that is more “house” than “boat.” Within that definition, however, there’s plenty of variation.

On one end of the spectrum, there are floating homes. These are houses built on floating platforms. They may not have propulsion systems or be navigable on their own. From the outside, they look like cottages or houses, not boats. They happen to be floating in a marina slip. Most examples on the market today are custom boats.

The ocean-going cruising houseboat is on the other end of that same spectrum. These boats have a deeper hull shape that keeps them stable and can cut through some amount of chop.

The most common type of houseboat is somewhere in between these two choices. They’re often built on aluminum pontoons for simplicity. But, then, it’s just a matter of building an enclosed “house” atop the platform. This type of houseboat has outboard motors and can navigate with ease. But the boxy cabin has lots of living space and is much more like living in a house or a large RV than any other type of vessel is.

You can spot houseboats like this on every major lake and river in the country. In some places, like Lakes Tahoe or Meade, the enormous “party barge” houseboat is so ubiquitous that it’s more or less associated with the destination. However, pontoon houseboats are the norm on the eastern US’s big lakes. They can range in size from 30 to 70 feet.

But houseboats are also common in other areas with protected cruising waters where people want to live aboard comfortably, for example, the Chesapeake Bay or the rivers and sounds of North Carolina.

What do you get in the typical houseboat? There are a few things that make them ideal liveaboard vessels. For one, they’re built around a rectangular wide-open living space. This means it can be furnished like a house, with regular home fixtures in the kitchen and bath. Instead of being limited to the layouts built into sailboats or powerboats, the houseboat lets you appoint the space however you see fit and gives you a ton of customization options.

The most common layout for houseboats is to have two levels. The deck level runs the length of the boat. The bow and stern usually have patio areas, and in between is the main cabin. A helm station occupies the forward end, with a large salon, living area, and kitchen. Aft of that will be separate staterooms and bathrooms, organized like a large apartment or home.

The upper level sits atop the cabin and usually has a flybridge for outdoor cruising and seating options for enjoying the fresh air and sun.

Houseboats are differentiated from other liveaboard vessels in that these boats are designed from the keel up to be lived on. Many boaters make a liveaboard situation work in a sailboat, trawler, tug, or narrowboat, but the houseboat is built for it.

To that end, it doesn’t do other things that different designs would. It can’t cross oceans like a sailboat can, and it can’t plow through heavy seas like a trawler can. Their high, boxy design makes them difficult to control in close quarters, especially when the wind blows. And their low-freeboard hulls or pontoons are not designed to take on anything more than the rough chop thrown up on a small lake.

Floating Homes

A floating home is a house built on a floating barge or platform. It is not navigable since it has no engine or marine systems. The only way to move it from one marina slip to another is to have it towed. It doesn’t have all of the systems of a boat, so it must be plugged into the dock power and water systems at all times.

Floating homes are limited to where they are allowed and aren’t allowed in most places. Most marinas want to keep their slips available to navigable vessels. A community of floating homes is a different type of marina from most. When you find a community of them, they stick together and have often been there forever.

Most floating homes are custom-built, but here is a look at one model available from American Houseboats.

Cruising and Luxury Houseboats

A cruising houseboat is built to move, so it has an engine and all the other machinery that makes a boat work. It can be unplugged from the dock, which means it has tanks to hold water and waste and its own batteries and electrical system.

Since it’s a navigable vessel, this type of houseboat is welcome at most marinas. Still, you will find many marinas or communities restricting them, so you can’t count on taking them everywhere. This is especially true in some areas–for example, finding the best and cheapest Florida liveaboard marinas for a houseboat would be very difficult.

The type of hull installed will determine where and when a cruising houseboat can go.

For example, a pontoon houseboat is built on aluminum pontoons like a deck or fishing pontoon boat. These boats are limited in their ability to handle big winds and waves and are generally best reserved for inland waters.

Larger and more seaworthy cruising houseboats will have fiberglass or aluminum hulls built like a motor yacht. The higher the bow and freeboard of the hull, the better its seakeeping abilities. But most are still built for lakes and rivers. They have very wide, shallow hulls and houses with large sides and lots of windage.

Some boats, like Bluewater Yachts or Gibson, focus on making a houseboat motor yacht hybrid that skews more toward the motor yacht end. The results are coastal cruising boats designed to go almost anywhere and built with high quality materials.

Alternative Houseboat Makers

There is an incredible variation in the type of houseboat you can find. From lake boats loaded with luxury features, like Adonia Yachts or Bravada Yachts, to peaceful waterfront retreats like the Eco Sea Cottages. You really can find anything if you look hard enough.

With the current trends in tiny houses and living off the grid, there are also plenty of new designs and innovations happening in the houseboat industry. This video shows a few of the niche designs coming out.

Houseboats are an appealing option if you live on an inland lake and want a weekend retreat or you’re a full-time liveaboard who wants a little more space. If you want to learn more about buying, operating, living on, or cruising in houseboats, check out Houseboat Magazine . They have a steady stream of information and media about these great vessels.

Who makes a houseboat?

Many manufacturers from all over the world make houseboats. Styles range from floating homes and cottages with no engines to large motor yacht-styled houseboats capable of extensive coastal cruising.

Do they still make houseboats?

Yes, many houseboat manufacturers are still in business. Like any other type of boat, however, it can be difficult to figure out who is making boats currently and who is not. Therefore, it’s always best to start with a used listing site, like Yachtworld or Boattrader, and see the newest models available. Additionally, realize that many houseboats are custom-built.

What is the best house boat in the world?

The best houseboat is a subjective title, especially since there are so many styles of houseboats on the water.  Some top brands in the houseboat market have been Gibson, Sumerset, Destination Yachts, and Adonia Houseboats.

What is the best material for a houseboat?

Generally, the best material for any boat is fiberglass. When built correctly, a fiberglass boat is strong and will last forever. They are also generally cheaper than metal hulls. The only thing that fiberglass hulls don’t do well is beaching on rocky shorelines. For this purpose, an aluminum hull would be superior.

Matt has been boating around Florida for over 25 years in everything from small powerboats to large cruising catamarans. He currently lives aboard a 38-foot Cabo Rico sailboat with his wife Lucy and adventure dog Chelsea. Together, they cruise between winters in The Bahamas and summers in the Chesapeake Bay.

How to Choose the Best Houseboat For Saltwater

Houseboats are boats that can be moored onshore or kept afloat on the water. They are often used as a vacation home or as a means of transportation due to their design.

The best houseboat for saltwater is one that can provide lots of relief from the hot weather, while still being spacious enough to have some fun. You should also consider the amount of space on the boat, your budget, the construction of the boat, and the type of houseboat you need.

To help narrow down your search, use these factors to find better options and match your needs with the best possible houseboat for saltwater.

Houseboat Size

Some people think that boat size is not as important as other factors such as the length of the trip, or comfort. However, what people might not know is that bigger boats don’t necessarily mean more safety.

When it comes to finding a boat for saltwater, what you need to consider first and foremost is the size of your houseboat for saltwater. The size of your boat will impact many different things, including the total cost.

When looking for a houseboat, one should consider what they can afford and how much they want to spend on a saltwater boat.

Saltwater boats are more expensive than inland boats and the price range varies depending on the size and type of boat. They tend to be more expensive because they are more durable with added features.

The price of a houseboat also depends on its size and location as well as what it comes with. So if you are looking for a smaller size boat with fewer features, you should expect to pay less.

Construction

If you are looking for a houseboat for saltwater, you need a very specific construction  type that makes it capable of handling the elements. This includes a watertight hatch construction design and buoyancy material that allows the houseboat to stay put.

The engine type also determines whether or not it will be able to handle the saltwater. Despite these features, we still do not recommend crossing through the ocean unless your houseboat is a sailboat or yacht design.

Houseboat Type

There are tons of different houseboats that work well in freshwater lakers, but your options are much more limited in saltwater. This is because the ocean tends to be harsh and much more difficult to use your boat in.

You can consider using a yacht, sailboat, or catamaran-style houseboat in saltwater. It should have stable enough construction with a bigger engine and extra support on the exterior finish of the boat.

Can Houseboats Go In The Ocean?

Houseboats aren’t designed for the ocean  because the waters are rough. But if you opt for a yacht houseboat instead, it works well in the ocean. A yacht houseboat has a much smaller weight and speeds which makes them much more suitable to navigate in the ocean waters.

However, the majority of your traditional houseboats are not suitable to drive through the ocean. The design is durable enough to handle saltwater but the waves and rough tides will cause difficulties, making it only suitable for docking in these waters.

The unique design of houseboats allows them to stay afloat even when the oceans are rough, but these types of boats were originally designed for calm and serene waters for more comfortable living.

What Is The Best Type Of Houseboat For Saltwater?

The best type of houseboat for saltwater would be one with an outboard motor for easy maneuverability and more speed. They are also lightweight, which makes them easier to transport on land or water.

It will also depend on how you plan to dock this particular boat. For example, some options will be better suited to drive regularly on the ocean like a Yacht but a floating home would not handle this as well.

Pontoon boats are typically sturdy and can usually withstand any kind of weather conditions. However, they are not the best choice for sailing through rough waves.

They don't have sufficient buoyancy to take on large waves and can cause damage to the user's boat if they get thrown up in the air by them.

If you intend to use a pontoon boat in saltwater, be sure you intend to keep it docked often in a location that does not experience the rough waters too much.

Floating Home

The floating homes have gradually become popular in recent years because they provide many benefits - including lower costs for homeownership and less environmental impact due to minimal impact on surrounding environments by being built of marine.

However, it is important to avoid the use of this house through waves and rough water. The perfect example of this home is the Savanti 31 Docksider, because it is perfectly built for saltwater but in calm waters.

A Yacht is one of the best houseboats for saltwater and the ocean because it can handle the waves and tide. It is a boat that can be moved regularly, giving you an adventure with a variety of activities or just cruising on its own.

It is a great houseboat to have if you are going to live on the water or go out on your boat regularly.

A sailboat is a more compact version of a houseboat but it is a great option for saltwater and the ocean . It has low maintenance costs, requires no dock, doesn't need to be tied up or docked anywhere.

A sailboat is smaller but it provides the same living space as the larger boat. It also does not require extensive maintenance on your part, making it very easy to use and live on.

With a catamaran, you can enjoy the luxury of living on the water while still being close to shore. The catamaran is a houseboat that is smaller than a yacht but remains durable in saltwater.

They are also relatively easy to transport and can be hauled on top of a pickup truck. The key features of the catamaran are its stability, speed and maneuverability.

What Is A Catamaran Boat? (And What It Looks Like) | Life of Sailing

Catamarans are increasingly popular for sailing and commercial use, but what sets them apart from monohulls and other multihulls?

A catamaran is a twin-hull boat with two equally-sized hulls placed side by side. They’re powered by engines, sails, or both—and they’re known for efficiency and speed. Catamarans are the most common kind of multihull boat.

In this article, we’ll go over the characteristics of catamarans and how to differentiate them from other types of boats. Additionally, we’ll cover the advantages and disadvantages of catamarans and compare them to trimarans and monohulls. We’ll also go over the most common types of catamarans and their uses.

We sourced the information in this article from marine design guides, boat identification resources, and the online boating community.

Table of contents

‍ How to Spot a Catamaran

Spotting a catamaran is easy. Simply look at the hulls and count them. Catamarans have two hulls side by side and a relatively large gap between them where you can see light on the other end. Catamarans are distinct from trimarans, which have an additional hull between the two outer hulls.

How do Catamarans Work?

The principle behind the catamaran is simple. You can think of catamarans like cars and monohulls like motorcycles. Catamarans distribute their weight between hulls on either side, whereas monohulls utilize only one hull.

Evidently, cars are much more difficult to tip over and can hold much more weight. Additionally, cars are wider, as they have much more contact with the road. Catamarans work in a similar way, as they have a wide stance and contact with the surface on both sides.

Obviously, that isn’t the most precise comparison. But the basic principle is the same, and catamarans have a few notable benefits over monohulls.

Catamaran Vs Monohull

Catamarans are easy to distinguish from monohulls. A monohull is just a regular old boat with a single hull. The vast majority of boats and ships are monohulls. Catamarans have two hulls, which are usually sleek and narrow.

Here are some comparisons of catamarans and monohulls, along with the advantages twin-hull designs have over most single hull types.

Benefits of Catamarans

Catamarans have numerous benefits. The first is speed. Catamarans produce less drag than monohulls and thus can achieve excessive speeds both under sail and power. They don’t need to plane like monohulls to achieve these high speeds, and they use less fuel.

Catamarans are also much more stable than monohulls. They have a wide stance and shallow draft, and many waves and swells can travel between the hulls instead of below them. This effectively reduces an entire axis of movement and prevents catamarans from rolling excessively.

Drawbacks of Catamarans

Catamarans aren’t advantageous in every way, or else we wouldn’t bother building monohulls. The disadvantages of catamarans limit their use to niche commercial applications and high-end yachts. But what are the drawbacks of a twin-hull design?

Sailing catamarans don’t follow many of the traditional boat handling rules and characteristics that sailors pass down for generations. Some, such as hull speed limitations, are good to do away with—while others, such as responsiveness, are not.

Catamarans aren’t as quick to the helm or responsive as monohulls. There are some exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, you’ll get a lot more feedback from a single-hull vessel. Additionally, the large section of deck between the hulls of a catamaran is prone to pounding in rough seas, which is loud and uncomfortable.

Catamarans can sometimes be twice the width of an equivalent monohull sailboat, which can increase mooring fees and limit docking options.

The final major drawback of catamarans is a consequence of their stability. Traditional full-keel monohull sailboats have a very low center of gravity, which makes them roll in heavy seas but ensures a recovery.

Catamarans have a higher center of gravity, and they can’t right themselves after a knockdown. And though catamarans are less likely to roll, a severe list on a multihull is a much more serious concern than on a ballasted monohull.

Catamaran Vs Trimaran

Catamarans and trimarans are often lumped together, but they have very different design and performance specifications. Trimarans have three hulls, whereas catamarans have two.

Trimarans look a lot like catamarans from the side, but a quick glance at the bow or stern can set them apart. Trimarans are faster than catamarans, as they distribute their weight across three hulls instead of two. This helps them stay centered and reduces interference from pitching and rolling.

Catamarans are fast, but they lose out to trimarans when going head to head. However, catamarans are much less expensive to build and maintain and often have roomier cabins due to their larger hulls.

Types of Catamarans

There are numerous types of catamarans, and their uses vary widely. The catamaran is one of the oldest and most useful hull types, and some variants have been used for thousands of years. Here are the most common kinds of catamaran boats and their uses.

Sailing Catamaran

Sailing catamarans are probably what you think of when you hear the name. Sailing catamarans are sailboats with two identical hulls connected by a center deck. The largest sailing catamarans are spacious and stable vessels that are capable of serious offshore sailing.

Sailing catamarans have a number of notable advantages over monohulls. Monohulls, which are traditional sailboats with a single hull, are limited by a simple concept called hull speed. As the bow and stern wave of a monohull intersect, they cause drag which limits the top speed of the boat.

Catamarans are not bound by hull speed limitations, as they have two hulls. Catamarans can go twice or even three times as fast as similar monohulls and achieve excellent travel times.

Catamarans are also more stable than monohulls, as their wide stance and shallow draft reduce the effect of rough water. They don’t heel, as the force of the wind is counteracted by the double hulls. Additionally, modern sailing catamarans can ‘wave pierce’ by cutting through swells instead of riding over them.

Sailing catamarans come in many shapes and sizes. Small sailing catamarans, such as those used in races and regattas, are known for their speed and relative stability compared to light racing monohulls. Sometimes, they feature a smaller second hull for stability—these are called outriggers.

Sailing catamarans have spacious interiors thanks to the large cockpit between the hulls. This cockpit usually contains cooking and eating spaces, a place to sit, and a hallway between the hulls. The hulls usually contain living quarters and often mirror each other.

Power Catamarans

Power catamarans have an even greater variety than sailing catamarans. These vessels are used for everything from party platforms to ferries and patrol boats.

Power catamarans are a recent development, as engineers and marine architects now realize they have numerous hydrodynamic advantages over other hull types.

Catamarans are much more efficient than other hull types, as they have less drag relative to their size. Additionally, you can build a much larger catamaran with less material. This makes them popular for car and rail ferries, as builders can construct a very wide vessel with two small hulls rather than a narrower vessel with a large single hull.

Military and Commercial Catamarans

Even the military has found a use for the catamaran hull shape. The Spearhead class EPF is an expeditionary fast transport vessel designed for carrying capacity and speed. It has two sharp hulls and a huge cargo capacity.

The Spearhead class EPF is 337 feet long, which is about the same length as a WW2 escort destroyer. Yet despite having a similar length and displacement, these catamarans can travel more than twice as fast—43 knots, or nearly 50 miles per hour. Their great speed is a direct consequence of their catamaran hull type.

Power catamarans are also used as patrol and utility boats on a much smaller scale, with either outboard or inboard motors. The State of Texas uses catamarans to patrol shallow rivers and lakes. Texas Game Wardens utilize state-of-the-art aluminum catamaran patrol boats, which are fast enough to outrun most fishing boats.

There’s another form of power catamaran that you may not have considered. Pontoon boats are technically catamarans, and they’re enormously popular on lakes and rivers throughout the country. Pontoon boats aren’t known for speed, but they’re a great platform for a fun and comfortable outing.

Catamaran Houseboats

The final common type of power catamaran is the two-hulled houseboat. Houseboats don’t always use the catamaran hull type, but it’s common enough that most major manufacturers offer it as an option.

Catamaran houseboats have a few notable advantages over monohull designs. For one, they’re easier to build—especially when pontoons are chosen. Additionally, they’re better suited for navigating shallow water. These vessels can support more weight across their two hulls, offer increased stability, and they’re also efficient.

Why Aren’t Catamarans More Common?

With all the advantages listed in this article to consider, it may seem strange that the use of catamarans is still somewhat limited. At the end of the day, it comes down to economics—as monohull boats and ships are simply cheaper to build.

Additionally, catamarans have some distinct limitations. Monohulls have lots of storage space in their hulls and can carry thousands of tons of cargo safely in all weather conditions. Catamarans lack this space and low center of gravity, so they’re not ideal for transporting cargo past a certain point.

Additionally, monohulls work, and many people are reluctant to experiment with new designs when old designs work just fine. This rule applies to both large and small boats.

A large monohull sailboat can be constructed at low cost from stock plans and reliably sail almost anywhere. Very little complex structural engineering is involved, and looser tolerances reduce cost and maintenance requirements.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Three escaped inmates from the eastern Caribbean island of Grenada were charged in the killing of a U.S. couple whose catamaran they hijacked, police said Thursday.

Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Atiba Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Trevon Robertson, a 23-year-old unemployed man, were charged with capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus also was charged with one count of rape, according to a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force.

The men appeared in court on Thursday and were ordered held in prison until their hearing in late March.

They were accused of escaping from a police holding cell on Feb. 18 and hijacking a catamaran owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel while they were aboard. Authorities said they believe the couple was thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21.

The three men were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association described Hendry and Brandel as “veteran cruisers” who participated in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and had planned to spend the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

Their bodies have not been found.

Like any drinking vessel, copper cups, mugs, water bottles and tumblers need to be washed after every use. Copper does require specific care and maintenance, however it's quite simple and easy to learn and do.

First and foremost, copper mugs should be cleaned properly for health and safety reasons. Whether at a restaurant or at home, you don't want anyone getting sick from drinking from an unwashed cup.

There is something compelling about the warm glow of polished copper. A huge part of the appeal and popularity of cocktails like the Moscow Mule is the unique aesthetic of the copper mug. This metal will tarnish naturally with time and use, so cleaning it properly can be essential to keeping it shiny, and fully experiencing the many benefits of drinking from a copper mug.

Like iron developing rust, copper will naturally tarnish  over time with exposure to humidity and other elements found in the air. Copper's blue-green tarnish, known as patina, can be either useful or annoying, depending on its intended use.

The patina actually serves as a protective layer for the copper beneath, and can be useful in outdoor applications such as roofing or pipes.  However, when it comes to mugs or cups, we want the copper to shine as warmly as possible, so it is essential to know about preventative care and maintenance.

Don't worry, it's super easy to do, and incredibly satisfying to restore and polish your tarnished copper mugs.

How Do You Clean Copper Mugs?

Cleaning copper mugs is like cleaning most anything, except that it MUST be washed by hand. In other words, never put them in the dishwasher, ever. Take 30 seconds to gently wash them by hand with a soft sponge, soap and warm water.

For most people at home, this shouldn't be a problem. But some high-volume bars or restaurants might not be able to dedicate the time needed for proper care. This is one reason a business may prefer a tin-lined  or lacquered copper cup that may need less polishing, although they too should still be washed by hand.

The most important part of cleaning your copper mug is drying it!

Residual water in the slightest amount can lead to tarnishing, so experts highly recommend you dry your copper mug twice, with two different soft towels or cloths until all moisture is removed.  This extra step only takes a few moments, and will go a long way towards the durability and cleanliness of your copper mule mugs.

If you want your copper mug to look nice, dry it twice!

5 Easy and Natural Ways to Remove Copper Tarnish

Owning a copper mug comes with the added responsibility of some occasional, simple maintenance. When your favorite mug starts to turn green, here are some easy solutions to restore its natural shine!

Lemon or Limes and Salt

four slices of lemon lined up and sprinkled with salts

This simple method is quick and easy, and ideal for bars or restaurants that may have an abundance of lemons on hand. Simply pour some table or sea salt onto a dish, and cut a fresh lemon or lime into 1/4th slices. Dip the fruit slice into the salt, and scrub the copper mug with slow, methodical circles inside and out. The change should be almost instantaneous, and when the tarnish has been removed, wash under warm or cool water, and dry thoroughly.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and five cups of water. Pour the solution into a saucepan, place your mug into the saucepan, and bring it to a boil. After a few minutes, the tarnish will have disappeared, and you can remove the mug with tongs, rinse it in cold water, and dry thoroughly with two soft dish towels.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Create a paste with three parts baking soda, and one part vinegar. Use a sponge to apply it to the mug with small circular motions and let it sit for about 10 minutes in order for the magic to happen. After that, simply rinse and dry until all moisture has been removed.

Harness the power of tomatoes to clean your tarnished copper mug! Apply the ketchup using a soft sponge or toothbrush, always rubbing in small circles. Then let it stand for 30 minutes. Remove the ketchup in the same way you applied it (a specially designated tarnish-toothbrush can be a highly effective tool for getting into those hard to reach places). Finally, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly with two soft towels.

Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is a tropical fruit, popular in Caribbean, African and Indian cuisine. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from brass and copper. If this is something you have access to, simply add water to create a paste, and rub it onto the copper with a soft sponge or cloth.  After a few minutes, rinse off the paste, and dry completely.

Metal Polish

Although the natural methods listed above are all equally effective, inexpensive and safe, another option is to use a tarnish remover or metal polish. Popular brands like Brasso are great for polishing many different kinds of metals, but the main ingredients may be less than desirable (rubbing alcohol, ammonia, mineral spirits and silica powder). Chances are you can easily find most of the ingredients for cleaning copper mugs in your pantry, and can avoid buying a product full of harsh chemicals.

Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Mugs?

Yes, it is safe to drink from copper mugs , despite click-bait headlines, myths and legislation that may suggest otherwise. True, when using 100% pure copper mugs it is possible that trace amounts of copper could be ingested. However, this can be mitigated by using stainless-steel plated copper mugs.

Copper is an essential part of human biology, and is necessary for regulating metabolic systems and vital organs. Copper deficiency can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Not only do our bodies need copper, we also have systems in place to naturally deal with any excess copper. Verified scientific studies have shown copper can do impressive things.

  • Copper and Iron work together to form red blood cells.
  • Copper helps maintain collagen, and along with other antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging.
  • Copper helps absorb excess iron in the liver.
  • Copper improves brain and nerve cell synaptic responses.
  • Copper aids in digestion and helps with ulcers and inflammation.

Copper toxicity is quite rare and, according to the World Health Organization , "There is a greater risk of health effects from a deficiency of copper intake than excessive copper intake."

The FDA guidelines do not recommend using copper for any food or beverage purposes, solely because of the extra care needed to maintain it, and applies exclusively to commercial operations, with varying local and state regulations.

This is meant to protect consumers from improperly cleaned or exposed copper mugs and cookware in bars and restaurants, and does not apply to home use. The FDA suggests the public learn about proper care and maintenance before using copper mugs, but scientists have debunked the claim that a Moscow Mule can give you copper poisoning.

When using 100% pure copper mugs and a liquid with a pH below 6.0 (like lime juice), and that liquid remains in the mug for an extended period of time, there is a chance you could consume amounts of copper. This is the reason why it is generally a good idea to use copper mugs lined with stainless-steel .

No, never! All copper cookware, utensils or mugs should be washed by hand, no exceptions. Dishwashers typically use harsh detergent, powerful water sprays and high heat that can seriously harm your copper mug both inside and out.

Dishwashers can lead to dents, tarnishing, and flaking or cracking. So take 30 seconds to do right by your copper mugs, and wash and dry them by hand!

Lines Versus Unlined Copper Mugs

When purchasing a copper mug, there are three basic options - 100% copper, tin-lined, and copper plated.

Copper is a great thermal conductor, and will keep your drink colder for longer (or hotter for longer, depending on the drinks). This is a big part of what makes the Moscow Mule an attractive summer beverage, and why copper mugs are great for cocktails in general.

Lined copper mugs  (usually with zinc, stainless-steel  or tin) can be a great choice. The double lining improves their durability, and can give them a great look. Unlike pure copper, lined copper mugs also offer additional health benefits by avoiding reactions between acids in your drink and pure copper.

Both lined and unlined copper mugs must be washed by hand and both will develop a patina over time. Lined mugs might take slightly less time to polish, because you only need worry about the outside. However, now that you know how to clean tarnished copper mugs, it's nothing you can't handle.

Essential Tips To Care For Your Copper Mugs

Copper mugs are stylish and good for your health. They keep your cold drinks chilled, and your hot drinks steaming. Copper mugs have been used for thousands of years for water purification and health benefits, and have made a triumphant rise in popularity since the invention of the Moscow Mule in the 1940's.

Whatever you choose to put in your copper mug, remember these three simple tips:

  • When serving drinks, don't let them sit for more than 4 hours. Drink up!
  • After each use, take the time to hand-wash your copper mugs with soap and water, and use TWO TOWELS to dry them thoroughly.
  • When your copper mug begins to tarnish, use one of the five easy and natural ways listed above to polish it to perfection.

Thank you for taking the time to become an expert on using, cleaning and caring for copper mugs. Cheers!
