  1. J/35 Review-Practical Sailors

The J/35 was a successful racer from its introduction in 1983, and with 300 built so far, it has had a successful production run for the company. The 35 is still available as a new boat and will continue to be. A new design, the 35C, is unrelated to the 35, a different design, slower, aimed more at cruising than the original 35.

  4. Used Boat Value: the J/35

The J/35 was a bold and successful departure from that approach. While its IOR contemporaries of similar size have PHRF ratings in the 100-120 range, the J/35 rates around 72-75 - considerably faster. A long production run and unique design has brought it full circle. A quarter century later, the J/35 still has a North American championship ...

  7. J/35

the J35 is in the Hall of Fame for jump starting the return to "Big Boat Racing" from IOR that drove a lot of potential owners away due to high costs. It gave boat owners a boat that can be cruised with their family, but can have great racing in One-Design format free of any rating system. Brilliant. And the numbers showed it.

  9. J/35

The J/35 is a unique boat - it's half the price of a One Ton, but has the same speed in moderate conditions." A review in Practical Sailor said, "in design, the 35 looks like a typical Rod Johnstone boat, with short overhangs for a long waterline, relatively low and flat sheerline, a low cabin house, and a moderate well-balanced rig. Obviously ...

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. 12. J-35

The J35 is an all-time classic. By no means is it an ULDB.. it takes 20 knots and 4 ft seas to break loose on a surf.. It still hammers upwind better than just about anything. The J35 referred to earlier is "Raptor", which I sailed against on SF Bay. Nice nice nice boat.. he is asking 68k and it is in Alameda.

  13. Perry Design Review: J/35c

The new J/35c is the perfect vessel for the racer/cruiser. The hull form is pure J with short ends, well distributed beam and ultra clean lines. Both rudder and keel are big in planform and, with the deep draft model at 6 feet 5 inches, this boat will go to weather well. This new 35 is not a derivative of the old and super-successful J/35.

  14. Schock 35 vs J/35

The Schock insists on proper sail trim. The cockpit on the Schock is WAY better. Long and open vs the small bathtub of a cockpit on the J/35. Our saloon table comes out and mounts in the cockpit if people want to wine and get cheesy. All in all it works great for us, and is a relatively fast and relatively cheap boat.

  17. J35 vs. Shock 35

    943. 39. CFP, CT. Jun 30, 2009. #5. Between the J and S, the Schock would be a much better boat for the conditions you see in your area. It was designed in Socal to compete against the J35's. In LIS, we find that with equal crews, the Schock is better in under 10, even in 10-15, and advantage to the J in over 15.

But still.. 22-24 yr old boat needs a sharp eye to maintenance. Count on replacing all the rod and possibly turnbuckles in the nexy year or two.. $3500+ FWIW.. the interior of the J36 is near indentical to the '84, '85 J35. The saloon table is different, but it was an option choice in the J35 too. Good luck with this.

  23. Why NOT to buy a J-35?

J35= a great boat. Survey is a must, as with every used boat. Sure, it's wet for a cruiser, but comfortable for a racer. A great mix for owners wanting the best of both worlds. It's a sound design. If you live near any One Design J35 Class, you won't regret buying one. PHRF, not some much. 2005 J35 North American Championships
