The Power Catamaran Compilation

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power

Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open ­day-boat category with creative designs. ­Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition

Sunreef Yachts introduced its 50 Amber Limited Edition , with plans to launch just 10 hulls of the exclusive design.

The Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition will have a carbon fiber mast and boom, four layout options and numerous amber-colored elements, including the hull.

Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called ­Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Test: Battle Of The Power Cats

We hit the first wave at about 25 mph. The bow rose so high that only a cloud-scattered expanse of blue Florida sky was visible beyond the rail. As we hung in the air, I told myself: You should have backed off the throttle while you had the chance--moron.

Instead, I clutched the wheel, flexed my knees and waited for the inevitable sternum-crunching reunion with the water. But the impact that followed opened my eyes more than it loosened my fillings.

There was a mild shudder, a gentle compression into the water, and before I knew it we were heading right up the face of the next wave. Again I braced myself, and again the impact never came.

That day three years ago was the first time I rode a power catamaran, and I've been a fan ever since.

These multihulled boats have a number of long-known and seldom-disputed design advantages over monohulls. First, catamarans ride softer because they don't have a large, round bottom that slams against the waves. Second, a catamaran's twin hulls focus the buoyancy around the outside of the boat, rather than in the middle, creating greater initial stability. Third, the two narrow hulls generate about one-third as much wetted surface, or drag, making the boat more efficient. And last, the hulls place the engines farther apart, increasing maneuverability.

So why, you might ask, don't we see more catamarans on the water? After that ride, I asked the same question, and received a simple answer: They don't look right. When people buy a boat they want it to look like their image of a boat--a catamaran doesn't.

Despite this consistent consumer resistance, manufacturers have continued hawking catamarans in U.S. marinas. That cat I tested in 1995, the 25 SeaCat, was just one more entry into a boat class of proven sales failures.

But the SeaCat didn't fail. Some say it was the styling--from the side, at least, it looked almost like a typical boat. Some credit the marketing: With its fuel efficiency and soft ride the cat attracted fishermen with small wallets and grand offshore dreams. And some think the catamaran was just a boat design whose time had come.

Whatever the reason, the SeaCat flourished, and today there are at least 15 companies selling power catamarans in this country. These cats range from 14 to 74 ft., although the majority fall between 19 and 33 ft. Last year, Grady White joined the fray with its 26-ft. Tiger Cat, giving the category the legitimacy of a well-respected domestic builder.

In order to get a handle on this fast-growing group of water wagons--to catch the tiger by the tail, so to speak--we gathered four new catamarans and put them through their paces. Although all four are nominally set up for fishing, we found very different boats that together are ready for almost anything.

Comet Pro-Star 20

This catamaran version of the increasingly popular flats boat is probably the most purpose-specific boat in our test. Like any good flats boat, it planes almost instantly and runs in shallow water. Relatively wide, flat hulls give the Comet lift, as proven by her 14-in. standing draft and ability to plane in 1.9 seconds. Meanwhile, a hydraulic jackplate lowers and raises the engine, allowing the boat to run in only 6 in. of water at full throttle.

Along with handsome blue hulls and nonskid decks, the Comet offers topnotch fit and finish. There's plenty of stowage space and recirculating live and release wells. The helm console has enough room for dash-mounted add-on electronics and is easy to reach from the comfortable bench seat.

On the water, the Comet was steady in a chop that would have slowed other flats boats. Trimming it out lifted the bow, making it feel like a high-powered bass boat without the threat of chine walking. Through turns it stayed flat and in control.

Glacier Bay Canyon Runner 26

Glacier Bay has been building power cats for 10 years, so it probably wouldn't agree that the 25 SeaCat popularized the category. Nevertheless, Glacier Bay hasn't exerted the same influence.

Not that its boats aren't worthy. The Canyon Runner was the only displacement-hulled catamaran in our test. And although this hull type sacrifices some speed at the top end, it makes up for it in ride. The boat ran through 3-ft. waves and over 5-footers with an almost eerie stability. What's more, it retained this smoothness in all directions to the sea. In high-speed, hard-over turns, the Glacier Bay stayed in complete control, although it did heel out a bit.

While the boat is set up for fishing, with fish boxes, live wells and rod holders, it makes a good all-around craft. It features quality components and is well-constructed. Still, its best attribute clearly is the ride. As one dealer aptly sums it up: "You just can't get in trouble in this boat."

True to its catamaran heritage, the Seagull can make a bumpy bay seem paved and can sit beam-to in a heavy chop without making you want to feed the fish. But unlike many other cats, the Seagull has a looser and freer side too.

Since it sits so close to the water, the boat feels even faster than it is. Of course, those low sides also mean it'll take some spray in a cross-breeze, but somehow that's part of this boat's charm. There's a little more action in its ride, making it feel as if it's frolicking across the wave tops, and it turns so quickly that anyone not holding on before a sharp turn will probably be swimming afterward.

The high-gloss gelcoat looks great, but the construction and finish are more workmanlike than flashy. Set up as a general-purpose boat, the Seagull skis, fishes, dives and provides some welcome levity.

World Cat 266 SC

SeaCat's owner retired last year, and the new owners renamed the company World Class Catamaran and redesigned the entire line.

With its cuddy cabin and walkaround helm, the company's new World Cat 266 SC is the queen of that line. And the best compliment we can pay it is to say that it seems like a larger boat, both in terms of its amenities and ride.

At speed, it's very sensitive to trim, especially if the engines are not trimmed evenly. But once it's properly adjusted, this boat is fast and makes the chop go away. It backs particularly well (generally, all cats do because there's less resistance) and stays almost perfectly flat during hard-over turns.

Inside, there are double bunks, a freshwater sink and portable head, all finished to respectable standards. These conveniences make the 266 SC great for a weekend getaway or an overnight stay at a kingfish tournament.

Overall, none of these boats disappointed our test team, but don't take my word for it. You've got to experience a power catamaran to believe it. Take one for a test ride, and then you'll understand why, at last, the power cat is here to stay.

This boat appears to be in very good condition, but she does need a good cleaning and detailing. I was not able to observe the hull as the boat is in the water, but there were no major nicks, dings or scratches from what I could see. Everything works as it should on the boat per the seller. The upholstery is showing signs of age, but there are no tears or rips in it. Introduction

DEFIANT is a 41.45-meter Palmer Johnson motor yacht that was delivered in 2012. She is part of the PJ 135 series and features an aluminum hull. The yacht's interior and exterior were designed by Nuvolari & Lenard, and Eric Küster handled the decoration. DEFIANT combines high performance, smooth lines, exceptional living spaces, and deluxe accommodations.

Accommodation

DEFIANT can accommodate up to 12 guests in five generous cabins. The master suite is full-beam and features a private balcony. The other four cabins are all en suite. The main saloon is spacious and open, with comfortable seating and a chic formal dining area.

The deck areas on DEFIANT are perfect for both relaxing and entertaining. The wide beam of 8.38 meters allows for a large sundeck as well as an impressive flybridge, which includes a spa pool and various seating options. The main deck also has an alfresco dining area perfect for private dining or entertaining guests.

DEFIANT is powered by twin 3,650hp MTU engines, which give her a range of 1,700 nautical miles at 12 knots. She is also fitted with Trac at-anchor stabilizers.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Alexei Navalny’s team is used to working independently. The most potent foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin was frequently absent for long stretches after being arrested, assaulted, poisoned, or imprisoned.

But when Navalny died suddenly in February at age 47 in a remote Arctic prison, his team was left with a monumental challenge: sustaining an opposition movement against Putin — who is all but assured to be reelected — without the living example of their defiant and charismatic leader.

After the initial shock wore off, Navalny’s closest allies returned to the work that cost his freedom and his life: undermining Putin’s iron-fisted grip on power .

A significant test will come Sunday, the last of three days that voters can go to the polls in an election that is widely viewed as more of a formality than an exercise in democracy .

That’s when Navalny’s team — with the endorsement of his widow, Yulia Navalnaya — is calling for a protest dubbed “Noon Against Putin.” They are asking Russians to flock to polling stations Sunday at noon local time across the country’s 11 time zones to demonstrate their discontent with Putin’s rule and his war against Ukraine .

“It is a very simple and safe action, it can’t be banned,” Navalnaya said in a video address. “It will help millions of people to see their like-minded allies and to realize that we are not alone, we’re surrounded by people who are also against the war, against corruption and against lawlessness.”

Navalny’s followers have expressed a wide mix of emotions in the weeks since his death, from renewed inspiration to a sense of defeat.

Maria Obukhova of Moscow, who paid tribute to Navalny on Wednesday at the Borisovskoye Cemetery, said the crowds she saw at his funeral — which numbered in the thousands — were motivational.

“It was a huge surprise for me, because it seemed before like everything had died here, that Russia is no longer, that it had died,” said Obukhova, who placed white daisies at Navalny’s gravesite.

Valery, another Muscovite at the cemetery, who withheld his last name for security reasons, said he had little hope for the future and that after Navalny’s death, that “something has really broken” inside of him.

Just several days after her husband’s death, Navalnaya expressed determination to keep his mission alive.

In the past month, she has addressed the European Parliament, met with United States President Joe Biden, and urged Western countries not to recognize the results of Russia’s election. She has also called on the West to impose more sanctions on those close to Putin.

Leading up to the election, Navalny’s team urged supporters to cast their ballots for any candidate other than Putin, or to invalidate them by choosing two or more candidates. They also had dozens of volunteers call ordinary Russians to ask them about their grievances and try to turn them against Putin.

The phone campaign was announced by Navalny over the summer, and since then “tens of thousands” of calls were made, Leonid Volkov, Navalny’s top strategist, said a video. “We will not stop doing that,” he vowed.

Volkov also gave a video address shortly after Navalny’s death in an effort to rally supporters, and perhaps tap into his longtime ally’s spirit of persistence. “It will be a monument to Alexei’s cause if you and I live to see how this regime disintegrates before Putin’s eyes,” he said.

Still, the Putin opposition’s uphill battle has only gotten steeper with its leaders in exile.

“(Putin’s) regime pushes people out of the country because it understands very well that the possibilities of influencing political processes in Russia from abroad are minimal,” said Nikolay Petrov, a visiting researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

Sunday’s “Noon Against Putin” protest will be a test of how much Navalny’s team can do in Russia from abroad, said Sam Greene, a director at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington.

“One part of what they want to do is to send a message to those who remain in Russia that you’re not alone, that the opposition in exile has their back to a certain extent and will support them,” said Greene. “But then the question is, how do they support them?”

Efforts are underway to disrupt the protest. Navalny’s team said fake emails have been sent around purporting to be from them telling Putin opponents to show up at the polls at 5 p.m. instead of noon.

Russia’s independent election watchdog, Golos, reported that officials in at least one region are being instructed to report large gatherings near polling stations to the police.

On Thursday night. the Prosecutor’s Office in Moscow warned that unauthorized rallies near polling stations “may prevent citizens from freely exercising their voting rights and the work of election commissions,” a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison.

The personal risks for Putin’s opponents remain high.

On Tuesday, Volkov was attacked near his home in Lithuania . Assailants smashed a window of his car, sprayed tear gas into his face and beat him with a hammer, according to Navalny’s team.

Volkov was taken to a hospital, and upon release said his arm was broken and his leg was injured so much it was painful to walk.

He accused “Putin’s henchmen” of the attack and said it was an attempt to intimidate the team ahead of the “Noon Against Putin” protest.

With Navalny gone, some of his supporters are recalibrating their expectations.

Valery, one of many people who visited Navalny’s grave in southeastern Moscow in recent weeks, said he is less optimistic about the opposition’s prospects going forward.

“Even though Yulia, his wife — his widow — has picked up the baton, I’m not sure that it is going to be the same as it was when Alexei was alive,” he said.
