5 Sunseeker Yachts That Crushed The Competition

5 Sunseeker Yachts That Crushed The Competition

May 16, 2019 12:53 pm

Few manufacturers can match Sunseeker for world-class engineering and luxury. They are considered by many (if not most) marine industry professionals to be the ultimate statement of quality and styling. Imported into the U.S. market since the late 1980s, used Sunseeker models have consistently ranked among the most desirable pre-owned luxry yachts on both coasts as well as throughout the Great Lakes region.

The five Sunseeker models profiled below stand out for their enduring popularity with American buyers.

#1 | Sunseeker Manhattan 74 [1999 – 2004]

sunseeker yacht competitors

Overview:   The top-selling yacht in this class for several years. The styling is aggressive without being overdone and the sumptuous interior is highlighted throughout by a sea of high-gloss cherry woodwork and designer furnishings. Four staterooms below — full-beam amidships master, VIP forward with island bed, and two guest staterooms, each with twin single berths. Formal dining area is forward, opposite the galley and lower helm. Circular staircase in the salon offers private access to the owner’s suite. Crew quarters for two are aft of the engine room with access from the cockpit. Large flybridge comes with a food-prep center with grill, seating for eight, and a sun pad. Hydraulic swim platform makes launching and retrieving a tender easy. Built on a deep-V hull with propeller tunnels, 1,200hp V-drive MANs cruise at 26–28 knots (30+ top).

Price Range:  From about $500 for early models to $650–700K for 2002–03 models.

#2 | Sunseeker Manhattan 73 [2011 – 2014]

sunseeker yacht competitors

Overview:   A popular model for Sunseeker — a high-performance flybridge yacht whose sleek styling and opulent accommodations ranked among the best in this class some years ago. The main salon is on a single providing a vast entertainment area with black Amtico flooring in galley and satin finished American walnut joinery throughout. Three double staterooms and a twin-berth guest cabin can sleep up to eight guests. Large hull windows allow natural light to sweep through the master suite, and another big window cut into the transom provides the crew cabin with panoramic views of the water. An impressive performer for such a large yacht, MAN V12 1400hp diesels cruise at 25–26 knots (low 30s top).

Price Range:  From $2 to $2.25 million for an 2011–12 model.

#3 | Sunseeker Predator 68 [2002 – 2005]

sunseeker yacht competitors

Overview:   More motoryacht than express at least when it comes to luxury. Constricted on a deep-V hull with a wide beam, the opulent three-stateroom interior of the Predator 68 is an impressive display of satin-finished woodwork, posh leather seating and designer hardware and furnishings. Two floorplans were offered, one with the master stateroom forward and the other with a full-beam master aft. Entertaining and socializing on the Predator will be done on the top deck where the hardtop (with huge retractable sunroof) and lounge-bar area are ideal for soaking up the sun . A hydraulic swim platform and tender garage are standard, and the 68’s large engine room offers good access to the motors. Among the best performing yachts in this class, MAN  V12 1,300hp engines top out at over 35 knots.

Price Range:  From about $500K to the low $800s top.

#4 | Sunseeker Predator 63 [1995 – 1999]

sunseeker yacht competitors

Overview:   One of the premier performance yachts of her era, also one of the largest. The enormous cockpit comes with a huge U-shaped settee with removable high-low table abaft the helm. A massive sun lounge at the transom conceals a garage capable of storing—and electrically launching—a 13-foot jet boat. The power-driven sunroof was a seldom seen feature in the 1990s. Below deck, the Predator’s upscale interior sleeps six in three well-appointed staterooms. Lacquered cherry woodwork, posh upholstery, and premium hardware made this one of the most sensuous interiors to be found in a production sport yacht. Built on a deep-V hull with prop pockets, MAN 1,100hp diesels (fitted into a tight engine room) cruise at over 30 knots (high 30s top).

Price Range:  From the mid $200s to low $300s.

#5 | Sunseeker Manhattan 50 [2005 – 2008]

sunseeker yacht competitors

Overview:   With the introduction of the Manhattan 50 in 2005, Sunseeker engineers created a completely modern, dual-helm yacht whose posh accommodations took cruising luxury to the next level. Her spacious interior — an eye-popping blend of high-gloss cherry woodwork, leather salon seating, and designer galley appliances — includes a full-beam amidships master with island berth, forward VIP stateroom with ensuite head, and a second guest stateroom with twin beds. The galley is down, “sunken,” as it was in many European motoryachts of this vintage. Tiered salon windows offer panoramic outside views, and vertical hull ports flood the master suite with lighting. The large engine room is a plus. Built on a deep-V hull with prop pockets to reduce shaft angles, she’ll cruise at 25–26 knots (30+ knots top) with 800hp MAN diesels.

Price Range:  From the mid $300s to about $500K.

The 8 Best New British Yachts on the Water, From Sunseeker to Fairline

Quality among the top u.k. builders is always a given. it's the range of yacht designs that may surprise you..

Pearl 72

As an island, boats have always been the lifeblood of Great Britain. And many British yacht builders continue to uphold the country’s proud naval and maritime traditions. While there are a handful of superyacht builders, the UK isn’t known for eye-wateringly huge megayachts or avant-garde design—though that has changed as its largest international brands compete with the style-obsessed Ferretti Group and Azimut brands.

But what you do find with the Brits is well engineered vessels with a high level of attention to detail in both the interior and exterior design. From semi-custom motoryacht builders like Princess and Sunseeker to the rarefied realm of a highly sought-after Pascoe limousine, there’s something here for nearly every yachtsman.

And thanks to enduring popularity, there is nearly always a British-built sailboat from the Oyster yard, somewhere just over the horizon. In fact, whether you’re cruising the waters of the Caribbean, New England, or the South of France, you’ll find U.K. brands along with the highest luxury offerings from Italy and Northern Europe.

Here are seven of Britain’s finest, newest, and most noteworthy vessels on the water.

Project Fox, Pendennis Shipyard

sunseeker yacht competitors

This 114-foot explorer yacht, overseen by project manager Burgess and in build at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, was designed around the owner’s wishes. It has a rugged exterior that will be paired with a bright, contemporary interior by QLondon Design. The owner told Robb Report that he plans to cruise off-grid to remote areas like Norway for heli-skiing with his family and friends (thus necessitating five large staterooms). But he also wanted family-friendly features like a sun terrace, wine lobby, open-air barbecue, and DJ station. Of course, the real breakthrough here: The open stern, measuring more than 1,100 square feet can carry a large complement of toys and tenders, but also scientific equipment (the interior has space for a modular lab) for when the yacht is hosting research scientists. “Flexible cabins and connectivity are key,” said the owner.

sunseeker yacht competitors

The ubiquitous model of the Pearl lineup, the 72 received a creative new interior design earlier this year with the addition of a stateroom that gives it two master suites. The U.K. yard has always been high on haute design, offering different palettes by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, but this double-master suite idea is a first for this size of motoryacht. The yard has recently won awards for the naval architecture of its 95, which approaches superyacht status, and it will be launching a new 85-foot flybridge next year.

Fairline Targa 40

sunseeker yacht competitors

Fairline is also among England’s internationally renowned yacht brands, famous for seaworthy hulls and top-tier creature comforts. It hasn’t built yachts as large as competitors Princess and Sunseeker but has been equally creative with the design. The new Targa 40’s cockpit is a case in point. It has an enticing exterior layout, with the cockpit featuring a foldout terrace to starboard and a U-shaped dining settee to port facing the rest of the deck, not to mention the two sun lounges on the stern. The 40 is effectively a dayboat, but with two staterooms, it also works as a family weekender. There’s a master in the forepeak and guest cabin amidships which is best suited for children. The galley below decks is also very functional. Top speed for the Targa is 36 knots with the optional Volvo Penta D6-380 upgrades.

Princess Y80

sunseeker yacht competitors

Along with Sunseeker, Princess Yachts is the other heavyweight of British yacht building. These cruisers and motoryachts have proven to be perennial favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. The Y80 debuting at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival looks to continue the tradition. The Y80 brings to the table an “infinity cockpit” with a glass transom and modular furniture for multiple setups. It also has a flybridge that spans about two-thirds of the yacht’s nearly 84-foot length, effectively creating a legitimate third deck. The Y80’s owner’s stateroom is amidships and full beam, while it has a VIP in the forepeak. Two other guest cabins are to port and starboard. The Y80 has an impressive top speed of 30 knots, but at 10 knots the range is an even more impressive 1,000 nautical miles.

Cockwells Duchy Sport

sunseeker yacht competitors

The 37-foot Duchy Sport from the Cockwells’ yard in Cornwall, famous internationally for its custom tenders, is designed for watersports enthusiasts. This Sport offers multiple towing points for waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing, with interior space for nine guests. Bow and cockpit sunpads will be popular spots for tanning, while a Bimini covers the amidships. Standout features include a wetbar, retractable swim ladder, bowthruster with joystick control, and of course ample water-toy stowage. The Duchy Sport comes with twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LVs which can get it up to a top speed of 42 knots—a speed befitting of this model’s name. Cockwells is also building a new Duchy 60, a stylized motoryacht that should rival Downeast offerings from U.S. builders Hinckley and Malaysian builder Grand Banks.

sunseeker yacht competitors

The Oyster 495 is a 52-foot, 8-inch sailing yacht that entered the U.S. market earlier this year. A new design from the keel up, the U.K. builder was thinking global circumnavigation, or at least serious offshore cruising, from the onset. The yacht is also meant to be able to be singlehanded by a capable sailor. The plumb bow and teak decks imbue the 495 with a definite saltiness with performance and aesthetics. The cabin is noteworthy for being both ergonomic and well-lit. Reported top speeds for the 495 crest the 10-knot mark under sail, while a 100 hp Yanmar diesel pushes it along happily at 9.5 knots.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

sunseeker yacht competitors

Sunseeker is one of England’s brands that has a global following. For good reason. The Poole builder has a range of vessels that extend from 38 to 161 feet. Sunseeker is known for good oceangoing performance and creative design. The Superhawk 55 is a reimagining of the Superhawks that enjoyed popularity with performance enthusiasts in the 1990s and Aughts before being discontinued in 2009. Sunseeker introduced the Superhawk 38 in 2020, which had echoes of its go-fast past. This 55, however, is more of a performance cruiser than a day boat. With twin Volvo Penta IPS950s the new Superhawk has a very respectable top end of 38 knots and a feature even Miami Vice hot-boat aficionados will appreciate—slow-speed maneuverability offered by pod propulsion. An aggressively raked profile complemented by stiletto-sharp hullside windows augment the Superhawk’s sporty vibe.

Pascoe E-Limousine Electric Tender

sunseeker yacht competitors

Pascoe tenders reside in the garages of some of the world’s biggest and most glamorous superyachts, thanks to the yard’s dedication to customization. The E-Limousine is the builder’s first fully electric vessel, the result of six years of R&D. Top speed is reported to be an impressive 40 knots, with a range of 60 nautical miles at a fast cruise of 20 knots. The builder says not only is this boat greener than a traditional tender but will also offer a smoother, quieter ride thanks to the construction used to mitigate vibration.

Are Sunseeker Boats Any Good?

sunseeker yachts with city in background

Sunseeker has been building boats since 1969 and is one of the largest motor yacht builders in the world. With approximately 150 boats produced each year and their range exceeding 20 models to choose from, it's safe to say that the Sunseeker brand will continue its pursuit for quite some time. With thousands of monthly searches for Sunseeker Yachts on Google, one question that continues to arise from boat buyers is "Are Sunseeker Boats any good?"

This is a very subjective question as Sunseeker builds a particular style of yacht for a particular style of boating, one that may not appeal to someone that loves sportfishing boats or center-consoles. By looking at both industry awards and a good volume of boats sold, we can assume the answer. Sunseeker Yachts are widely considered a good boat builder as they are often recognized through marine industry awards, like the World Yacht Trophies, but there have also been more than 450 used Sunseekers sold since the beginning of 2021.

"Builders like Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Azimut, and others are all pretty similar in their styles with some of the shipyards investing in new technology that may give them slight advantages," said Jay Hendrix, Vice President of SI Yachts. "We are proud to represent Princess Yachts and Absolute Yachts as dealers, which are competitors to Sunseeker, but we have also sold a fair amount of all of these brands on the brokerage market. If you have a Sunseeker you want to sell, call us and we'll put together a full marketing plan just for your boat. We can also help you with learning more about Princess, Absolute, and other luxury motor yacht builders.

Seen below: 'AQUAHOLIC' does a walk-through video of the Sunseeker Manhattan 55

What Kind Of Awards Has Sunseeker Won?

The Sunseeker designers and engineers are not strangers to the major marine industry awards that are given out annually. The Motor Boat Awards are arguably one of the top ceremonies for yacht builders on the international stage. The 2022 awards which were held in January included multiple Sunseeker models in the running for various categories. The Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht was the winner in the 'Sports Cruisers Over 45-Foot Category'.

"The Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht lives up to its name with the kind of nimble handling and near 35 knot performance that belies its size and simply wouldn’t be possible on a full-blown flybridge," the judges said. Add in the exhilarating experience of driving the boat from the Skyhelm station on the flybridge and you have one extremely fun boat ride. Additionally the Manhattan 55 was nominated for 'Best Flybridge Up To 60-Feet' and the Manhattan 68 was nominated for 'Best Flybridge Over 60-Feet.

65 Sport Yacht

The World Yacht Trophies are another highly-regarded awards ceremony where Sunseeker did tremendously well in 2021. Three models took home awards in major categories, a testament to the popularity of the British shipyard. The 65 Sport once again won an award, this time for Best Exterior Design in its category. The 88 Motor Yacht won for Best Exterior Design in its category as well, while the 90 Ocean won for Best Layout.

What Are The Most Popular Sunseeker Models

Again, this is a very subjective thing to say that any one model is more popular than another, especially when there can be many differences between ranges like the Manhattan, Portofino, Superhawk, Predator, and others. There are also going to be much fewer boats sold in the 90-foot and up range as there is less of a market at that price.

The Manhattan model range was quite popular and the sold data supports this. From the beginning of 2021, there have been 83 used Sunseekers sold in the United States and recorded in the MLS. Nearly half of those boats sold were from the Manhattan model line, with the Manhattan 52, Manhattan 55, and Mahattan 66 being the most popular. During this same timeframe, there were 3 Sunseeker boats sold over 100-feet, two of which were based in Miami.

Comparing Sunseeker sold numbers to other competitive brands is worthy of discussion, but other factors like production schedules, sourcing equipment, owners keeping their boats longer, and a variety of economic situations can "muddy the waters" when trying to determine popularity. Looking solely at the American market, Sunseeker came in behind Azimut in total number of pre-owned vessels sold, but did exceed the numbers for Princess, Fairline, Ferretti, and Galeon.

As a leader in the yacht brokerage industry and as one of the most successful new boat dealers in the Northeast, the team at SI Yachts is uniquely experienced to help you take your boating interests to the next level. If you are looking to sell your current Sunseeker or other boat, we can execute a personalized advertising plan, as well as utilize our vast Hubspot CRM database, to help you find a buyer quickly. If you're looking to purchase a yacht, we have access to boats on and off the market that may fit your budget and requirements. Sunseeker Predator 65 Review (2021 Edition)

In a world where sportsbridges are booming in popularity, does a more traditional sportscruiser such as the Sunseeker Predator 65 still have a place? Read our in-depth test and review to find out

Sunseeker Predator 65 Review (2021 Edition) image 1

Do people still want big sportscruisers? Sunseeker certainly thinks so having introduced the Predator 65 about 18 months after the arrival of the boat upon which it is based, the 65 Sport Yacht.

The boats are identical except that the Sport Yacht has a dinky sportsbridge which is home to Sky Helm and arguably the finest driving setup of any boat in this category. The Predator goes without the upper deck but in its favour is a truly gigantic glass sunroof which pulls back to create a staggeringly large aperture that instantly transforms the boat into an open sportscruiser. It's powered by Volvo Penta IPS (1200 or 1350) and has an impressive array of deck and interior configurations for a production boat of this size. Let's see what else it has to offer, starting with what it's like to drive.

Our Scores Explained

Performance & Handling

Around the marina.

With either Volvo Penta's IPS1200 or IPS1350 on the menu, joystick control comes as standard on the Predator 65 so guiding the boat around a marina is simple if you're used to this type of system. The boat doesn't have too much windage and the view from the lower helm, thanks to all the glass in the superstructure, is very good, though the additional control station in the cockpit will be useful if you more stern-to regularly. A proportional bow thruster adds that extra bit of control over the bow, which is always welcome even with the joystick doing the majority of the work.

Having a side door at the helm would make it easier for the person driving to help with crew duties if needed but there is at least an electric window so they can easily communicate with the crew out on deck. Life on deck for those on crew duties is pretty good. The side decks are wide and easy to navigate and between the anchor locker, tender garage and crew space there is enough space to swallow the boat's fenders, though they're not the easiest spaces to access. The guardrails are a little low towards the cockpit but they rise as you move forward to add to the feeling of security up front.

The popular extended seating option in the cockpit improves the area dramatically as an entertaining area but it does block off access from the cockpit to the port side deck so you have to go down onto the bathing platform and around or climb over the seats.

sunseeker-predator-65-exterior

The Predator's sister ship, the 65 Sport Yacht, has a driving experience like no other thanks to its innovative Sky Helm but even though the sportscruiser doesn't have the theatre of that feature, dynamically it is just as sweet. This is an IPS boat that has been tuned for driver engagement and it treads the line perfectly between refinement and agility. Turn that multi-function wheel hard from lock to lock and the boat dips its shoulders towards the water with relish and it changes direction with remarkable tenacity.

Conversely, if you just want to sit and cruise the 65 will happily do so. At 25 knots we recorded sound readings of just 66 decibels, which is pretty remarkable considering there is 2,000hp churning away below deck. This is a side of the big Predator really appeals.  It's a tremendous grand tourer that is easy to drive, quiet at cruise and relatively efficient with a range of nearly 400nm @ 23 knots thanks to a fuel capacity of 3,500 litres. We topped out at a two-way average of 33 knots.

It's available with IPS1200 or the 1350s we had on test but we don't think Sunseeker has built one of these or a Sport Yacht with the smaller motors. It doesn't make much sense to go for them given they're the same block as the 1350s, only slightly less expensive and working harder to keep the boat in that 25-knot cruising sweetspot.

Conditions were pretty gentle for our test with just the wake of passing traffic to test the 65's hull but we tested the 65 Sport Yacht in more trying conditions and it stood up to them well. There is a wonderful atrium effect created above the companionway down to the lower deck but it does enhance the sound of the water rushing beneath the hull at speed, which goes to highlight just how quiet the engines are.

Design & Build

sunseeker-predator-65-beach-club

Sunseeker launched the Sport Yacht 65 first and then created the twin-deck Predator 65 sportscruiser off the same platform so, from the roof down, the boats are absolutely identical. Despite the Predator coming later, it's almost an even 50/50 split between sales of the sportscruiser and the sportsbridge, which may come as a surprise given that the boats are the same price.

On the face of it, it doesn't make much sense to pay the same amount for a boat that has fewer decks but when you enter the saloon of the Predator it all falls into place. Yes, the space is the same but the much larger sunroof makes all the difference. The Sport Yacht has a sunroof but it's not on this scale. The Predator's is enormous and it's made up of a framework of six heavily tinted panes of glass, which allow natural light to fill the space when the roof is closed but repel a fair bit of heat.

It's the single-level living aspect that holds such appeal. You don't lose guests up to the flybridge so the cockpit and saloon become the heart of the boat where everybody congregates both at rest and when moving along.

Another remarkable thing about the 65 is how many layout options Sunseeker has baked into a production boat. The design team clearly thought long and hard about the requests they were likely to get from customers and catered for as many of them as possible. Want the galley down? They can do it. Four cabins? No problem. Extended owner's cabin? Come this way. We'll delve into these in more detail but it's safe to say there is an arrangement to meet most needs.

The interior looks and feels absolutely lovely, especially the smoked eucalyptus timbers which have a subtle almost tiger print grain-matched pattern that pops up all over the boat. For the £21,341 they cost extra, they should look the part, however. Quality in general appears very good. Engine room access is via a hatch at the aft end of the port side deck and though space around the engines is restricted by the bulky presence of the tender garage moulding, the installation is very good and working on major items such as the generator and Seakeeper (if fitted) is easy enough. The tender garage does create compromises in the engine room but there are plenty of benefits, as we'll see later in the review.

Interior Accommodation

sunseeker-predator-65-saloon

The galley-up layout has been the most popular of the boats sold so far and it's easy to see why. It's a good size and comfortably spans the space between the cockpit and the internal dinette, its handy return creates the perfect server and adds some handy extra storage space. At the aft end, the window drops (very slowly) down into the deck to blur the lines even further between saloon and cockpit and it works well. If you treasure more seating and privacy on a crewed boat (rare at this size, but not unheard of in certain markets) then the galley down layout is a useful option. It's much smaller, as it takes the spot on the lower deck where the owner's study is, but it does create a huge amount of seating in the saloon.

The upper galley is big and has masses of storage space, induction cooking, a dishwasher and a domestic fridge/freezer on the starboard side with an optional (and large) wine fridge tucked next to it. The Princess V65 has seating opposite the gallery and further forward in the saloon whereas the Sunseeker's is all focussed on the central area of the saloon. It's not as easy to serve the dinette from the galley but it does mean that all of the seating is exposed to the fabulous views out of the enormous windows. The dinette table is fully adjustable and easy to expand and adjust with one hand to switch between dining and coffee table height. The TV pops up from behind the smaller sofa on the starboard side.

The sunroof, of course, is a major talking point and it's a rather spectacular structure. Open, the massive aperture douses the dinette and helm position in the sunshine and pulls in great mouthfuls of air when the boat is moving along. It's transformative and totally alters the feel of the boat when it's pulled back.

sunseeker-predator-65-owner-cabin

On the lower deck, the space outside the owner's cabin on the port side can be specified as an extra cabin with a single berth, a lower dinette, an extension of the owner's suite or it's where the galley is located if you opt to have it on the lower deck. The variety on offer is impressive, best in class, in fact, but the most popular arrangement thus far has been the brilliantly coined 'grand master'. Here, the space becomes a lavish study area with a built-in desk, stool and some beautifully integrated storage. In a world of remote working, this sort of quiet, well-specified workspace will seal the deal for some owners.

The rest of the cabin is just as thoughtfully put together. The bed is big and set at a good height, there's well over 6ft of headroom throughout and the floor is flat, too, so you needn't worry about catching your toe on anything when you make your way to the ensuite in the night. To port, there is seating beneath the hull window with useful drawer storage lined up along the opposite die. The detailing is lovely, from the subtle LED strip lights in the ceiling and above the bedside tables to the stainless steel inserts that add a bit of flourish to the bulkhead behind the bed. It feels classy.

Guest Cabins

Whichever layout you opt for, the main guest cabins are unaffected. There is a spacious twin, with an ensuite, on the starboard side and a comfortable VIP with its own bathroom. Privacy amongst the guest cabins is outstanding because not only do they have their own bathrooms but there is also a separate day head, a lavish touch for a boat of this size that means guests don't have to share. Despite this, none of the other spaces feel in the least bit compromised, especially the VIP which has good space to get changed at the end of the bed, a large TV mounted to the bulkhead and a neat bureau/make-up area on the port side.

The crew cabin is an option (£26,000) and many will see it as surplus to requirements. On a boat of this size and style, it's never going to be huge, especially on a boat with a tender garage. It's accessed via a unit on the starboard side of the cockpit and down a steep ladder. In most cases, the space is probably going to be more useful lined out as storage, which is what you get if you don't opt for the cabin fit-out. Some markets will demand it but most owner-run boats should probably look to save the money and use it for stowing kit.

Helm Station

sunseeker-predator-65-helm

It is, first and foremost, a great-looking helm station with a real sense of occasion. A moulded pod dominates the top of the dash and is home to a pair of 16in Garmin MFDs; lower down are the same retro semi-digital dials that we first saw on the 65 Sport Yacht. They add some flair to the dash and you can flick between data such as speed, depth and heading via a BMW iDrive-style controller mounted next to the helm seat.

Remote control of the instrumentation is excellent. The MFDs are touchscreen but you can also control them via a keypad mounted behind the throttles and through the multi-function steering wheel, which has paddles similar to a car's flappy paddle gearbox, only here they control functions on the screens. Carbon fibre and flashes of the same timber used elsewhere on the boat brighten up the dash itself and it's a very clean design with a handful of buttons for things like the anchor windlass, windows and horn.

The CM8 system, which Sunseeker has been using for a while now, provides digital switching for all of the boat's functions from one screen and there's a dedicated slot for an iPad that can run the same system and controls the boat's AV remotely.

The backs of the helm seats are a little low but that aside the ergonomics of the position is sound. The seat has a good amount of slide adjustment so you can get close to the helm and with all of those controls placed around the helm seat, you can sit back and flick around the various screens without having to move out of your seat. The Predator has one of the biggest single-piece windscreens of any production boat and even though this creates slightly larger mullions, the view forward is excellent. It's a lovely environment to cover the miles from.

sunseeker-predator-65-garage

The Predator may only have two decks to play with but the designers have done a great job of making the very most of the space. First and foremost, the garage is there to keep the tender off the deck and it's large enough to swallow a Williams 345 or something of those dimensions. But, with the optional Flextiteek flooring (£7,300) and overhead shower (£2,600) the area can also be used as a water-level living space. Drop the hydraulic bathing platform down, pop a couple of bean bags on deck and you have an area to relax by the water or keep an eye on swimmers.

The tender recovery system is part of the £131,000 Platinum Med Package (see Our Options & Pick below) and this uses a roller system and electric winch to aid the launch and recovery of the tender. It's a great space that is more than just somewhere to stow the tender and bulky items of kit.

The standard arrangement in the cockpit is to have a central dinette with access up both sides from the bathing platform and a pair of fixed bar stools facing the galley to create a bar when the window section is dropped down. The more popular option, however, is to have an extended seating arrangement with a bench that snakes around the port side and butts up against the wheelhouse. It blocks off access to the port side deck from the cockpit but the major benefit is the massive boost in seating space and the large dinette table.

You could comfortably sit eight people for lunch around here and there's space for some free-standing chairs opposite if needed. It's a great space that is well protected from the elements and links directly to the large aft sun pad, which can be protected by an optional sun shade that pops out from the overhang. The boarding gate on the starboard side is handy, too, especially if you're alongside a high quay or fuel pontoon. It's the same side as the optional third docking station so the skipper can move the boat into the berth and, if starboard side to, can easily step off and help with lines.

With no top deck, the foredeck area has greater importance aboard a sportscruiser like the Predator 65. It's a good space with a deep sofa stretching out beneath the windscreen that is separated from a double sun pad forward by a walkway that links the two decks. The sun pad has adjustable backrests so it's possible to sit up with some support if you're reading or want to take in the view and there's an optional canopy that sits atop some carbon fibre poles.

In order to keep the profile of the boat as clean as possible there is a moulding that links the sofa to the sun pad that blocks off the end of the walkway between the two decks, which means you have to step over them to get to the sofa or cross the foredeck. It's not a major issue but just makes moving around this area a bit more difficult than it should be.

Value For Money

The base price for a Predator 65 with IPS1350 is £2,240,000 ex VAT (all prices correct at time of writing), which is about in line with what you'll pay for a Princess V65 and likely to undercut its rivals from Ferretti Group (see Rivals section below). Interestingly, the Predator and Sport Yacht are the same prices, so it only depends on which style you prefer and, of course, how far you delve into the options list.

Our Options & Pick

Some key extras are part of the Platinum Mediterranean package (£131,000) such as the 17.5kW generator upgrade, tropical air-conditioning, passerelle, tender recovery system, aft cockpit shade, 12in spring cleats, winches and the foredeck cushions with tilting backrests. If the boat is going to live in the Med then this pack, along with the £7,000 cockpit docking station are must-haves but if keeping the boat in cooler climes you may want to pick and choose certain items.

We've covered the crew cabin fit-out, which is probably £25,000 that most people can put towards something else but it's there if you want it.  The £17,000 navigation upgrade to twin 16in Garmin MFDs with the pilot system for IPS, Fantom open array radar, fishfinder and AIS is a good investment, as is the £24,000 Dynamic Positioning System, which holds the boat in place using GPS at the touch of a button. If you're regularly a two-person crew, this is a great addition.

AV is a personal choice but the Performance AV package (£12,500) adds Samsung smart TVs throughout with a mix of Sonos and Bowers & Wilkins speakers for a top-class audio-visual mix, all of which can be controlled remotely from a smartphone.

The C-shaped cockpit arrangement in place of the standard layout is the one we would go for (£13,600) and the 'grand master', though it's a £15,900 option is too good to miss unless you need the extra sleeping space of the fourth cabin. It's also worth paying the combined £10,000 to deck the tender garage out in Flexiteek and add the overhead shower to create the mini beach club at the stern as it gives you a useful extra outdoor living space. The Seakeeper is a meaty £128,500 option but if you live on anchor a lot of the time it's worth every single penny.

Our test boat was about as highly specified as a Predator 65 can be and came in at £2,838,782 ex VAT.

Do people still want sportscruiers? Sunseeker has been building boats long enough to know what customers are after and the sales figures for the Predator 65 prove that the answer is a resounding yes. Where the 65 Sport Yacht is characterised by its class-best driving experience because it's such a huge amount of fun, the Predator 65 stands out for its refined cruising ability and single-deck focus. There are plenty of people who just don't feel the need for a small flybridge up top and therefore the Predator is the perfect solution; it's hard to explain what a difference the spectacular sunroof makes. Kudos to Sunseeker, too, for providing such a fine array of layout choices for a boat that they churn out in decent numbers. Impressive customisation potential for a production boat is just one of many elements that make the Predator 65 a very appealing prospect.

Reasons to Buy

  • Striking looks
  • Layout choices
  • Refined cruising capability
  • That sunroof!

Things to Consider

  • Engine room is a bit tight
  • No helm side door
  • Small crew cabin

There are some classy competitors in this sector, let's have a look at them.

The Princess V65 is probably the direct rival and it's a smooth operator. It's got a pair of 1,400hp MAN V12 engines on shaft drives (totalling 800hp more than the Sunseeker) and will top out, according to Princess, at 38 knots. It also has a tender garage and crew cabin aft with four guest cabins further forward on the lower deck. It's effortlessly sophisticated on board with a galley aft layout, dinette opposite and the main lounging area forward. The sunroof isn't as large as the Sunseeker's, or as packed with glass, but it does have a side door adjacent to the two-person helm. The four-cabin, three-bathroom works well, especially the position of the large owner's ensuite behind the bed, but it doesn't have anywhere near the layout options of the Sunseeker - but then not much in this sector does.

The Riva 68 Diable is a sportscruiser in the old school mould. The main deck is open-backed and designed for fun in the sun with the lower deck given over entirely to the galley, dinette and sleeping accommodation. Riva has a rather old-school attitude towards engine options, too, and has opted for power. Twin MAN 1,550hp V12s on shafts, to be specific, which are good for a top speed of 40 knots. Because of that lower deck layout, there is only space for three cabins including a guest twin, VIP and full beam owner's cabin amidships all with their own ensuite bathrooms. Aft, like most boats of this type, there is a garage large enough to swallow a decent tender. The Riva doesn't have the year-round usability or practical edge of the Suneeker but it's a big beautiful machine with unmatched quayside appeal.

If performance is the key priority then, well, the Pershing 7X is the one for you. This 38-tonne flyer will top 50 knots thanks to its pair of 1,800hp MAN V12s mated to surface drives. It has carbon fibre in its superstructure and despite being bigger in all dimensions than the Sunseeker, weighs about the same and with 3,600 litres of fuel on board will cover over 250nm even at full speed. There's more than just performance in the Pershing's corner because it has quite a unique arrangement board, too. It's available with two or three cabins on the lower deck, the former replaces the twin guest cabin with a big lower dinette. Like the Riva, the 7X has a lower deck galley arrangement, which leaves space for plenty of seating inside the air-conditioned deck saloon. The owner's cabin is full beam amidships but the bed faces aft with the bathroom arranged in the corner. It's not as plush as the Sunseeker's 'grand master' but it does have a more spacious crew cabin.

Its predecessor was a hard act to follow but thanks to an all-new hull and superstructure boasting a vast expanse of glass, the latest Sunseeker 76 Yacht lifts expectations to another level. We find out if it delivers

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. So say career advisers to youngsters preparing for job interviews, and one wonders if this snappy iambic heptameter is also emblazoned over the door to Sunseeker ’s design office, for few boats have ever made a better first impression than the Poole shipyard’s new Sunseeker 76 Yacht. Stroll up from the quayside, kick off your shoes in the cockpit, step over the threshold into the saloon – and pause.

An expanse of hardwood floor stretches out in front of you. Understated, low-level furnishings either side lead the eye forward: there is an open-plan galley on the starboard side, facing an elegant dining table. Beyond, a step up to the helm deck and its inviting sofa, nestling beneath a rakish windscreen. And on each side, huge windows that frame the seascape and flood the interior with the warmth of natural light. It is a pretty spectacular space.

That was mine, anyway – other first impressions are available. Of course it was happily influenced by certain choices made by this yacht’s owner, who had elected to have the American-style open galley rather than the enclosed space, which Sunseeker reckons is more likely to appeal to buttoned-up European sensibilities.

His selection of the ‘antique brown’ granite for its work surfaces helped it disappear into the background. Dark wenge flooring, with its subtle reflective qualities, enhanced the feeling of space in a way that carpeting probably wouldn’t, while with its intense, mirror-gloss finish the dark hardwood dining table seemed more like a lighting fixture than an item of furniture.

Room for improvement

The Sunseeker 76 Yacht was launched last autumn, a completely new design that takes the place of the old 75 in the company brochure. The Sunseeker 75 was a success by any measure – along with its predecessor, the 73, a total of 104 were built, according to the shipyard – but even Sunseeker’s people acknowledge that it wasn’t perfect.

One problem was the tight, curving companionway linking the main and lower decks. Another was engineroom access, which was confined to a simple hatch in the cockpit sole, unless you demanded expensive modifications to the crew cabin.

Replacing the 72, the new Princess 75 Motor Yacht boasts a separate access master cabin, stunning main deck and a

Sunseeker 75 Yacht

In addressing these concerns and bringing the new model up to the levels of the latest competition – Princess’s prize-winning 75 Yacht in particular – Sunseeker designed a new hull some eight inches (20cm) wider than the old one and focused from the outset on building as much practicality into it as they could.

In the confined spaces of a yacht’s hull, even one this size, practicality generally means straight lines and right angles. Curves look cool but can also be wasteful, and for a perfect example compare the 75’s curved main companionway with the Sunseeker 76’s new, straight-edged counterpart, which has a useful locker halfway down, a wardrobe-sized space at the bottom, and a huge stowage void concealed beneath its lower three steps.

There is never enough stowage on a boat, but this largesse makes the recessed hull window on the landing seem less of an extravagance. And note how the glass balustrade at the top renders it practically invisible, further emphasising the spaciousness of the saloon.

Sunseeker-76-yacht-review-saloon-forward

That vast window looks just spectacular during the day…

Sunseeker-76-yacht-review-saloon-forward

…and feels just as welcoming when the sun starts to set

The crew cabin aboard the Sunseeker 76 also represents a major improvement. Fitted as standard with a double berth on the port side, a sofa beneath the transom window and a very reasonable head and shower compartment to starboard, it is exceptionally comfortable for crew on a yacht this size and would do very well for extra guests, whose only cause for complaint might be that access is through a sloping, bottom-hinged door in the transom – less than ideal if it’s raining.

An extra drop-down Pullman berth can be added. A short, full-height passageway leads forward past the washer and dryer to the watertight engineroom door – which, oddly, is an optional extra.

The new square companionway brings many benefits and just the one drawback. The port side of the lower deck accommodation has been rearranged to accommodate it, and most of the squeeze is felt by the VIP cabin, which occupies slightly less floor area than it did on the 75.

It is still a comfortable space, however, albeit with the berth set well forward and up two steps, and along with the starboard double cabin and the port-side twin, it offers a good compromise between furniture and floor space. Headroom throughout the lower guest areas is a comfortable 6ft 6in (1.98m), none of the berths is shorter than 6ft 4in (1.93m) and all cabins, naturally, have ensuite heads and shower compartments.

Sunseeker-76-yacht-review-owners-en-suite

His and hers sinks in the master bathroom are a welcome luxury

This particular Sunseeker 76, the second to roll out of the Poole assembly sheds, was the property of an American owner who was clearly experienced enough to appreciate the value of stowage space and understand the practicality of the new design. So the tall locker at the base of the companionway contained an extra fridge.

He even did away with the standard sofa on the starboard side of the master cabin , deeming the extra lockers and drawers fitted in its place to be more useful, even allowing for this suite’s existing shelving and hanging space, not to mention the drawers in the bed base. It’s a sensible swap: if you need to sit down to put your socks on, there’s always the bed. The guest cabins are less well endowed with storage volume, but each has a fair-sized hanging locker as well as under-berth drawers.

Best laid plans

A number of layout alternatives are available on the Sunseeker 76, on all three decks. So you can have a hot tub at the after end of the flybridge, or a crane for a PWC, or a simple sunbed like the one on our test boat. On the main deck the galley can be partitioned off with ‘electric glass’, fully enclosed, or banished down below to take the place of the port guest cabin, to make way for a big circular dining table. The hydraulic aft platform is designed to take a Williams 385 tender, but if you’d like to install the larger 445 it can be upgraded to take the extra weight.

Sunseeker-76-yacht-review-anchored

The Sunseeker 76 Yacht certainly makes the right first impression

Choices of floors and finish are offered too: cherry veneer, black American walnut or silver oak, all varnished in either satin or gloss. Standard items include eight place settings of Royal Doulton’s ‘Fusion’ white bone china, complemented by cutlery from Robert Walsh, and Dartington crystal glassware.

One of the most significant decisions most owners will make will be the choice of engines. MAN’s 1,400hp V12s are the standard fit, but for another £60,000 or so our owner had specified the growlier 1550s. Without a direct comparison with a lower-powered example it’s hard to say whether it was money well spent, but the test boat seemed happy with the decision, recording a two-way average in the tidal waters off Old Harry Rocks outside Poole Harbour of just on 33 knots.

Our Sunseeker 76 Yacht was also fitted with conventional trim tabs, and Sleipner’s Side-Power Vector curved fin stabilisers . The first weren’t needed during our test: the yacht felt well balanced, and while the tabs could be useful to correct a crosswind-induced heel, they had no effect on top speed and we left them up during the trial.

Sunseeker-76-yacht-review-foedeck

The hard top has a large fabric sunroof opening

In the flat conditions of our test the Vector fins weren’t necessary either, but unfortunately the helmsman doesn’t have a choice in the matter. At speeds over 15 knots the system bleeps grumpily if the fins are inactive: there is apparently a risk that when locked in place they might have an adverse effect on a yacht’s high-speed handling. So they were switched to active, in automatic mode, and they worked well.

At speed things got a little more interesting, as the fins tried manfully to resist the hull’s natural tendency to heel in fast turns, before giving up and letting the laws of hydrodynamics have their way. But as we straightened up the fins also wanted to have their say, resisting, just for a second or two, the boat’s urge to right itself. Charging along in a straight line at an obstinate angle of heel was strange. It didn’t feel like progress.

The Sunseeker 75 Yacht may have been a hard act to follow but it was beginning to show its age. Starting afresh with a new hull and superstructure was undoubtedly the correct course of action, and while the layout of the Sunseeker 76 is similar to that of its predecessor, the Poole shipyard has effected significant improvements. The design department has also introduced ideas, which move the game on. The 76’s foredeck arrangements are noteworthy – one shipyard spokesman said they seemed to have been stolen from a hundred-footer, and you can see what he means. The little sunroof over the lower helm is unusual – perhaps unique – on a full flybridge yacht, and a nicely unexpected touch. In the meantime yacht design generally has developed, and the main deck spaces aboard the Sunseeker 76 benefit from the current fad for massive windows, along with cutaway bulwarks to make the best of them. The results are truly impressive. Sunseeker’s latest can look its competitors squarely in the eye.

Set Your Eyes On The Sunseeker 86

  • By Phil Draper Photography by Joe McCarthy
  • Updated: April 28, 2015

sunseeker yacht competitors

The drive from my Suffolk home on England’s east coast to Sunseeker, which is based in Poole, Dorset, on the southwest coast, is four hours minimum without activating any speed cameras. (And there are lots in this part of the world.) At 8 o’clock on a mid-October morning at Sunseeker House, hot coffee and a bacon roll restored a suitable enthusiasm for the day, as did an unexpected break later in the heavy, dark clouds that the short-range shipping forecast had suggested were going to be particularly nasty. In the end we enjoyed Indian summer sunshine for the duration of our morning with the builder’s 86 Yacht. And while my morning had been fairly ordinary, this Sunseeker proved herself completely the opposite.

Never mind the unarguably bold, and to me quite stunning, profile that’s pure contemporary Sunseeker; the really interesting bit lies beneath the vessel’s waterline. Sunseeker designed the 86 Yacht from the keel up to deliver serious cruising flexibility. Conceived by the builder’s longstanding in-house naval architect Ewen Foster, this yacht’s hull form is a hybrid. It can deliver the usual Sunseeker planing speeds, but it’s a little bit deeper in the forefoot and a little flatter aft, which helps deliver more efficient displacement and semidisplacement performance. The transom deadrise is 17 degrees. By comparison, the 88 Yacht she replaces in the Sunseeker lineup had a transom deadrise of 20 degrees.

The hull is produced by a two-part mold that was created in-house from a two-part milled plug. This split-mold approach has nothing to do with performance, but is more to do with yard practicalities when it comes to moving the tooling around. Unlike many other builders, Sunseeker still bangs the wet layup drum. None of its hulls and superstructures are vacuum-infused, despite the advantages and successes — including lightness, strength and increased efficiency — competitors have had with such techniques. Sunseeker says it prefers its method to avoid printthrough issues in the vessel’s gelcoat finish.

Specifying the engines for a hull like this is a crucial decision. Four engine options, all MTUs, are available: twin 1,380-horsepower 10V2000 M84s or twin 1,659-horsepower 12V2000 M84s, both of which are derated, or twin high-performance 1,622-horsepower 10V2000 M94s or 1,950- horsepower 12V2000 M94s. However, it is also worth mentioning that all of the aforementioned engines will soon be replaced by versions that comply with the latest EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II requirements with in-engine technology, and IMO Tier III requirements using SCR exhaust-gas after-treatment. Whatever the engine designation, the selection should depend on your cruising requirements, not top-speed vanities.

With the more powerful M94 ratings, the topspeed options are 27 knots with the 10Vs (which is what Hull No. 2, our test boat, had) and 31 knots with the larger 12Vs. But that’s not the interesting call. There is little difference in high-speed cruising ranges — 488 nautical miles at 2,200 rpm and 22 knots, or 468 nm at 2,200 rpm and 26 knots — the range does vary significantly at slow-speed cruising speeds. It is 1,430 nm at 1,200 rpm and 10.4 knots for the 10Vs; 1,188 nm at 1,200 rpm and 12 knots for the 12Vs. If you slow down a bit, she will make 1,753 nm at 1,000 rpm and 8.5 knots or 1,456 nm at 1,000 rpm and 10 knots, respectively. Long-range cruising enthusiasts will surely appreciate the 86 Yacht’s performance versatility.

With the derated diesels, the top speeds of 10Vs and 12Vs are 24 knots and 27 knots, respectively. At 10 knots, the 10Vs are spinning at 1,000 rpm and the range is around 1,450 nm with a total fuel burn, including generators, of just over 18 gallons per hour. At a virtually identical 10-knot cruise and 1,000 rpm, the 12Vs burn nearer 19 gph and deliver a 1,380 nm range. Those are long legs.

Slow-speed cruising is the real luxury with this yacht. During our test on that semiblustery autumn morning, our 86 delivered the predicted 26-knot top speed and was suitably agile for a lady of 147,400 pounds half-load displacement, but the best bit was the cruise home at just 10 knots. I was at the helm all the way back to the yard from the outer reaches of Poole Bay, at least 10 to 15 nm at 10 knots, and had time to appreciate the scenery, not least Brownsea Castle, which lies a mile from the yard and serves as one of the world’s most obvious landmarks just inside the entrance to Poole Harbour. This channel winds to the north with trot lines along the way and the sun on riverside hills, fields and some of the envy- provoking waterside properties around the exclusive Sandbanks area of Poole. The spot is probably as close as England gets to having its own Fort Lauderdale — not very close, but still pretty posh. That hour-and-a-half cruise was bliss. I would have been happy with another 1,400 nm or so like that.

The base price of a Sunseeker 86 Yacht with the biggest 12V engines is just under 3.9 million pounds (about $6 million at press time), whether spec’d with the M84s or M94s. But specify the least powerful 10Vs, and again either the derated M84s or M94s, and the basic price drops to a whisker under 3.6 million pounds (about $5.6 million at press time). Then, once all the usual options are totaled up, expect to see another 10 percent or so more added to the final bill, excluding taxes; that’s the average that extras cost.

One recent client pushed options about as far as imaginable with a production yacht. The fourth and fifth 86 Yachts will be based in the Seychelles. One will serve as a support vessel for the owner’s two 230-plus-foot megayachts. The other will be a dive boat with the main salon certified as a wet deck and an editing suite aboard to process underwater video.

During our test in mid-October, little more than a month after the 86 premiered at overlapping boat shows in France and the United Kingdom, 19 had already been sold, totaling 18 months’ worth of orders and delivery slots now pushing into early 2016. All of those are “Euro-spec” boats, although bound for various regions of the world.

Ironically, despite all the sound arguments for derated engines and displacement and semidisplacement cruising speeds — all of which Sunseeker flagged as desirable in market research and focus groups — all the boats sold thus far are contracted with high- performance M94s. As the saying goes, “You can lead horses to water, but you can’t make them drink.”

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
