Schionning Boats, good or bad?

Look at alot of plans and heard about alot of designers, but one name i haven't heard been throwen around these forums is Schionning Designs. I've looked at Chris White, Richard Woods, Bob Oram to name a few, but the boat i've settled on is the Schionning Cosmos 1100, but haven't a brass wasso about it or there designs, so asking you guys for your option. What i'm really asking for, are these boats proven (on the schionning web page, they took 1st and 2nd place for the Brisbane to Gladstone 2009 race) so i guess they are fast. But do they have any little bad quirkes, or are they the million dollar boat they look? Dave.
Are yes, nice boats, but i'm trying to stay under the 40ft-12m mark.

The Schionning boats are definately some of the better looking catamaran kitsets on the market and as you say performance is proven. I have been told (but have no first hand experiance) that they take a lot longer to build and typically end up more expensive than claimed. With any kitset product from any designer ask for some references for people who have built the same boat so you can talk to them about their experiance (or find someone with the design and ask them personally without having the enquiry filtered by the designer. This is the best way to get to the truth. You should also check what comes with the kit. Some people will send you a pile of Duflex panels and call it a kit. While other company's kits (Roger Hill for example) will include everything cut to shape right down to interior lockers and bunks etc.

I have heard - though only 2nd or 3rd hand - that their scantlings are a bit on the light side. Regardless of who you choose, I'd ask for the contact details of a few clients and ask them about their experience.

We talk to Robert Quinn of Schionning Design about how their company is navigating Covid-19, their most popular models, and the future of catamaran design. We discuss the Arrow series, G Force, and Waterline / Wilderness designs. Robert tells us why their Arrow series is their most popular and why the Arrow 1200 is the most popular model. He talks about their most common build locations in Australia, Thailand, and South Africa, and their growth plans for the USA market. A big thank you to Robert and Schionning Design for participating in our series of interviews with catamaran designers, builders, and owners.

Don’t exactly know why, but I think people are seeing them as escape pods. Robert on why Covid-19 has improved catamaran sales.

Tell us about yourself and how you got involved with Schionning Designs?

Schionning Designs is a family business started by Jeff Schionning, and I’m actually one of the few non-family members. I’m a mechanical engineer and designer by heart. I have an international design award to my name which is lucky enough.

schionning catamaran

I was born in South Africa but also lived in Australia, and that’s where I met Jeff and Lorriane. I’d worked with Robertson and Caine for Leopard catamarans for a couple years, and then we decided to leave for Sydney.

Then in 2012 I got to know Jeff and Lorraine. And while we didn’t kick things off as a joint venture while I was still there, when I moved back to Cape Town, South Africa, they were very keen to start that office and get things going on this side.

Both of them were born in South Africa, so they have that tie and that’s what led to opening this office.

Tell us a little bit of about your production and how many Schionnings are built each year?

So our business is quite different from I suppose the regular. We pride ourselves in allowing people to build boats themselves, so our largest portfolio was owner-builders. Professional building is becoming more and more of a thing these days, and maybe that goes in ebbs and flows.

schionning catamaran

We typically are dealing with clients who build themselves, so it’s not like we’re running a factory that consistently pushes out X amount of boats. It fluctuates. We have good years. We have bad years.

I would suppose for the last decade, we would have averaged about six a year. Not huge numbers but we are a boutique brand, and we’re ticking different boxes. In the 31 year history, we’ve probably done between 400 and 600.

schionning catamaran

It’s a difficult number to know. We did business differently a few decades ago, and we sold a lot of plans and to build ideas to people. But we have no idea or kept track of whether they’re actually executed or not.

Some clients get in touch with us afterwards and give us the launch photos or the welcome or some sort of feedback and some don’t. They prefer to stay silent.

That’s the window of of our portfolio.

How involved are you in the build process generally?

We have our professional builders, and they’re usually self-sufficient. When this is a new design, we get more involved with them, and obviously each builder usually has different strengths. So they contact us for different interpretations of the plans and the guidance. Sometimes it’s a roll-out period as well particularly if it’s a custom build because all the variables aren’t dialed out in the beginning, so we’re finessing as the client goes along making his / her choices. We’re always present. We’re always there to be contacted, but it’s not a day-to-day basis.

schionning catamaran

Then for the owner builders. Well we have had a few repeat clients but for the first timers they start with a big learning curve. They have a lot of questions, so there’s phone calls. I really enjoy that part of the business dealing with the clients and guiding them through that. We all can learn from each other, and sometimes comments are made where it gets very interesting.

I suppose in the last 10 years, I’ve got to know a lot of clients and been intimate with a lot of their builds. Once they go through the first 30 processes, they then become more self-sufficient on like a rinse and repeat kind of recipe. Then we may not hear from them again.

Is there a yard that you find your clients using more often than not and if so where’s that located?

Historically we’ve had our biggest market share in Australia where the company actually started. That was up to 80% of our business, and so Noosa Marine was a very popular build location. They’re on the eastern coast just north of Brisbane.

schionning catamaran

I suppose over the years we’ve also started working with more international yards. We have a strong yard in Thailand that is producing multiples of our boats. These are all professional builders obviously, so they’re doing the repeats. And then in South Africa as well we have a builder that’s been going for 10 or 11 years. There are other builders in Europe and in America. In South America as well one or two have been built in the past.

But the three would be our most popular (Australia, Thailand and South Africa).

So Covid has affected every business in some sort of way. Tell us about how it’s affected yours?

Logistically it’s been very difficult especially with shipping building materials. We’re a kit based company where we’re producing cutting those files up those materials for clients and then sending them to them and we were offering more and more as we go.

So waiting for raw materials to come in processing them and shipping them out and then dealing with the shipping companies has been a difficult one. Depending on whether they’re allowed to enter the country or not.

But then also when lockdown happened and kids weren’t able to go to school, it kind of halved our time if you will. Because while one parent would be watching the children, you could get some work done and then you switch. So we actually probably doubled our inquiries and business really. So very thankful for that but when you’ve halved your time and doubled your schedule. It becomes very difficult to manage

But like I said a good problem to have and the used boat market went crazy, so we were contacted a lot by used buyers interested in the used boat. But there’s also been the new boat market as well which has been good for us.

Don’t exactly know why, but I think people are seeing them as escape pods.

That has been a common theme that we’ve been hearing. Catamaran business on the rise during Covid.

What is the most popular series that you have right now is it the arrow series.

That’s correct. The Arrow is our newest to the portfolio, and the Arrow 1360 is the most popular by inquiry, but the Arrow 1200 is actually what is the most common to be built.

schionning catamaran

And it’s no surprise. It’s the more affordable, smaller model in the range, but the speed at which you can build the Arrow versus the others makes it very attractive.

schionning catamaran

What’s the difference in the the speed to build from the others?

So the Arrow is a purely flat panel construction versus the G-Force and the Solitaire. Then that’s just on the sailing side. There’s power designs as well.

schionning catamaran

When you have larger cut panels that just bend into shape, it’s a lot quicker than doing several strips into a curvature shape from a construction and from a fairing point of view. So it can save you up to three months just on the construction between the different designs.

schionning catamaran

Were you involved in the Waterline 1480 design and if so what can you tell us about that design?

I wasn’t involved there. That was before my time. It was very very popular, and we did have to retire that model and some of the older ones as well.

schionning catamaran

It’s a difficult decision to make, but those were all hand-drawn designs, and we’re now into a modern era of computer-aided design and CNC cutting and all those things. At one point in time, we just had to draw the line and discontinue those sadly.

The Waterline 1480 was a wonderful design because it’s a great live aboard size. It ticked many boxes, and it was quite different to what was out there in terms of being able to build it yourself versus performance and versus features.

How long ago did you have to make that transition and retire it?

It was about four years, maybe five years ago. There are still some people building them, so we continue to help them out and guide them through it.

schionning catamaran

It just became increasingly more difficult because it’s not all documented in a digital format so with us becoming more of an international business it’s harder to support people from overseas when on that platform.

What’s your biggest challenge in getting people to buy a build plan or kit?

I suppose it’s different for every single client. Location has an influence on that, finding a builder that is close to them. Sometimes clients are very happy to build overseas; sometimes not, and that could be the difference of whether they can afford it or not.

But then there’s also I suppose cash flow issues.

There’s importing issues as well like for example Brazil is always a challenging one because they have such high duty and paperwork for bringing those materials in.

Then some people it’s space. They really want to build it themselves unlike a lot of USA clients, and I suppose location to the shore because they may have acreage on a farm which is a wonderful place to build, but then they deal with the challenge of shipping this big structure down to the ocean.

So everyone’s got their difficulties and sometimes it’s more about their preparation and their plans, so it could be 18 months turn around before a client goes ahead and in that time other variables came in. Like having to renovate the house, so the boat budget moves on. But at least they are now understanding their constraints.

For most of our clients those that have that itch to build their own boat it never really leaves, so we’ll see them down the road.

Tell us a little bit more about your clients. Is there a typical age nationality? Are they mainly couples or families from your experience? What are you seeing?

Typically those that are aged between 40 and 70. Every now and then a young gun comes along. We do get a lot of families interested, but I think that when you’ve got young kids they sort of get in the way from you actually building your project and there’s different priorities.

I suppose our most common client is that person which has owned a few boats before. It’s rare that we get a first time sailor contacting us that they want to build their boat. So those that have gone through that experience of learning what they want onboard. How they sail. Do they like speed? Do they not like speed? When they’ve got that all dialed in, they’re normally contacting us with their request to build.

The Lagoons and Leopards are very popular – nicknamed the condomarans. They’re presenting such a wonderful lifestyle upfront. Our buyers are just looking for a bit more performance, a bit more ability. People eventually work out what they need and what they don’t need and come to some more performance design with less on board.

That makes sense. First-time sailors might buy a Leopard or Lagoon, and then over time evolve to one of your designs.

What do you think is the most important design consideration when building a catamaran.

That’s an interesting question and I suppose I could sum it up by saying “peace of mind” which might be strange, but I think that your comfort, your safety, your performance, and your confidence all tie into peace of mind.

So when we’re designing a boat or it’s being built we’re producing the materials for it, we want to take all those different dynamics into consideration. But at the end of the day if the client has peace of mind and that can be in many forms, it’s going to bring confidence. You’re gonna have peace of mind because you’ve got the safety.

You may not be into performance necessarily, and you don’t need to be sailing faster than what you’re comfortable with, but if you have very little wind and you need to keep moving then you do have the performance.

Or if you need to outrun a storm, and it’s better to outrun the storm then go through the storm, then you have that performance in hand.

And for catamarans it’s a recipe of reefing really at the right time rather than having too much sail area up which can cause some problems. So yeah I’m going to sum that up as “peace of mind” is the most important for us as designers, but also for our clients who are sailing and with a lot of them going through the experience of having their boat built for them.

Be there whatever involvement they have from the whole project or just visits to the professional yard they get that intimacy with their boat. So they understand what’s gone into it. They know how it was put together.

So when you’re out there on your own something fails or is causing concern you know where to look. You know how to problem solve it, and that again is peace of mind.

Where do you see the future of Schionning Design going? Give us some insight into the next 10 years?

We’d like stronger sales in the USA and we don’t exactly know how to solve that problem as yet. There’s a bit of a fear with Americans sending money abroad and maybe that’s a cultural thing. I did spend several years studying in the states, so I do have a feel for for the culture there.

So we would like to get some manufacturer on the state side, so that building feels a bit closer to home – a little bit more organic for them. We do have a couple builds happening. And we’re doing agent negotiations in several parts, so that Americans can talk to Americans. So we’re trying to focus on that and see how that plays out.

schionning catamaran

We’re also trying to get more into supplying OEM deals and manufacturing more finished products for clients. And that’s something we’ve introduced for the last few years where instead of this daunting project of starting from absolute scratch to finish our OEM deals can help take some of the variables out of play where they can obviously price check it and choose it or or not. At least they’ve got to price the whole project and at least that can come up all up front, and they can get close to working out what this is going to cost time-wise budget-wise. If we can manufacture components for them, it just makes the whole thing easier to bite off.

Great. We wish you the best luck. We would love to see more of your boat designs in America. As we wrap up today’s discussion, how can people learn more about your designs and and purchase a build kit if they would like?

The website is an immediately easy place to go to: www.SchionningDesign.com . We’ve just redone the website and we hope it’s appealing including updated pictures and great links to certain things.

We’ve got strong content on Facebook and Pinterest, and then there’s builder blogs as well.

Razor Cat

Current models: 38' power cat and a 52' sailing cat

Developed by anchor yachts, built by pacific seacraft in the usa, razor cat 38 – foiling performance power cat.

schionning catamaran

The Razor Cat 38 is your “escape pod” for adventure cruising. Providing performance, efficiency, and comfort on the water through the unique features and well thought design. The foil system increases efficiency by up to 40% over non-foiling boats, while improving performance and ride comfort. With 400 gallons of fuel aboard you have a 500+ mile range cruising at 30 knots, with a top speed of 45 knots. A key design element that the Razor Cat 38 shares with the Razor Cat 52 is the central inside helm station and 360 degree views throughout the bridge deck from both the sitting and standing positions.

The Razor Cat 38 provides seamless indoor/outdoor living with the Vista Door, which enables the entire aft wall of the salon to raise into the cabin top when desired. This combined with the near 17 foot beam creates a very spacious “single level” living space that is larger, and more usable, than most 50′ monohull powerboats. The innovation does not stop there, the cockpit has a built in electric grill station on the port side (with a 12 volt icemaker beneath) and built in beverage fridge opposite on the starboard side. The aft cockpit seat spilts into two benches that can be relocated next to the deck steps when you want to access the transom. The transom folds down to make a large swimming platform or boarding area. The fold down transom has the added benefit that it extends beyond the end of the outboards when they are tilted out of the water which allows you to board from the transom when you are stern to a dock. You can also board the boat from either side with the convenient side cockpit access just forward of the outboards.

The salon has a linear galley to port that spans almost 8 1/2 feet and features a 24″ work station sink, Vitrifrigo DRW180 stainless steel fridge/freezer drawers, induction cooktop and oven, along with generous storage. Opposite the galley is the settee which has a high/low folding table (when lowered forms a coffee table or a double berth). The settee seat backs can flip forward or aft facing depending on how you wish to use the seats. The settees also have large slide out drawers beneath providing easy access to provisions. The central helm station commands the forward portion of the salon, with a large sliding hatch directly above the helm. There is also a removable co-pilot seat that locks in place on the starboard side of  the helm chair.

Each hull features a standard queen size berth with an opening hatch at the head of the berth. The large hull window features an opening port, providing ventilation and light that will be appreciated those aboard. The cabins also have a generous amount of storage with slide out drawers at the foot of the berth, inboard hanging locker, and outboard storage shelves. Moving aft past the steps from the hull to the salon you come to the head compartment and separate shower stall. Both the head compartment and shower stall have opening ports to add to the ventilation.

Forward of the salon is the systems room which is accessed by a large deck hatch that opens on gas struts. This is where the Lithium Ion batteries, inverter/chargers, and air conditioning units are located. This allows all the systems to be easily accessed and serviced while keeping them separate from the rest of the living area. Forward of the systems room is the comfortable forward cockpit which has storage beneath the cockpit seats. There is also large storage lockers in each bow which can be accessed by deck hatches and feature watertight bulkheads for added safety.

With the Razor Cat 38 you enjoy the journey as well as the destination!

Razor Cat 52 – Performance Cruising Sailing Catamaran

schionning catamaran

The focus of this design is elegant performance. An offshore capable multihull which is easily controlled and operated by one person from the safety and comfort of a central inside helm station, featuring 360 degree views throughout the bridge deck. All lines (with the exception of the genoa/spinnaker sheets) lead to two electric reversible winches located either side of the helm. The genoa/ spinnaker sheets are handled by the two electric reversible winches in the cockpit (that can also be controlled remotely at the helm). Couples that have spent time cruising know how critical it is to be able to handle the boat easily while on watch without having to wake your partner, this is not possible on most catamaran designs.

A properly designed and constructed catamaran can be a very fast, but only if it remains light and easily driven. This design has relatively narrow hulls with dagger boards, along with simple powerful rig. The high bridge deck clearance minimizes pounding in a seaway and greatly adds to the comfortable motion aboard while sailing. All systems are designed to be easily accessed and maintained, a critical feature on any true cruising sailboat.

The bridge deck offers indoor/outdoor living at its finest, with excellent sight lines when sitting or standing, in the salon as well as on the aft deck. While the inside helm is the control center of the boat, the large U-shaped galley is the heart of the boat and is located on the bridge deck across from the dinette with easy access to the aft deck. The galley features a bar, under counter fridge/freezer drawers, a large sink, a proper stove with oven, along with substantial counter space and storage.

The accommodations in each hull are configured to provide a generous aft cabin with a queen berth that is easy to get into from the foot of the berth, along with ample storage. Moving forward is a modified queen midship berth (which folds up to reveal a work bench when needed). Next is a large forward head compartment with separate shower stall and large hanging locker. On the occasion you have additional guests the dinette also converts to a spacious double berth.

The market has seen an ever increasing demand for catamarans, particularly among sailors who have previously owned cruising monohulls. These buyers are looking for a catamaran that is well built offering: speed, comfort, and safety that is easy to handle while remaining a joy to sail. They also want a design that allows them to enjoy indoor/outdoor living (while underway and at anchor) in a way that is not possible on a traditional monohull. However, most catamarans on the market are designed and built for the charter market, which focuses on maximizing the number of berths and interior accommodations without concern of the adverse effects it has on sailing performance. The Razor Cat focuses on what experienced sailors are looking for in a performance cruising catamaran.

RAZOR CAT - PERFORMANCE CRUISING CATAMARANS

josh

Origins of the Razor Cat

The development of the Razor Cat is the result of my personal experiences cruising with my wife  aboard a performance catamaran, as well as my nearly 20 years selling new and used yachts. During that time I have been listening to what my clients have been searching for in a cruising catamaran, and the Razor Cat is the culmination of those experiences.

I am excited to be working with such a talented team to bring the Razor Cat to life:

Schionning Designs has been designing performance multihulls for over 25 years. Credited with over 400 boats on the water and cruising the world and zero failures on record, speaks to the success of their designs.

Pacific Seacraft has earned a reputation as a highly skilled builder of ocean going yachts, which they build with pride in Washington, NC USA. Their passion for boat building will be evident from your initial contact, throughout the entire build process, and after you take delivery of your new Razor Cat.

I am confident that the Razor Cat’s combination of innovative design, remarkable performance, and exceptional build quality, will bring joy to her owners and all aboard.

Elevate your time on the water.

Josh Hodgson –  Owner of Anchor Yachts and Principal of Razor Cat

The Razor Cat Team

Anchor Yachts – Developer of the Razor Cats

Anchor Yachts was established in 1998. Providing international yacht brokerage services, as well as authorized representation for number of high quality build to order yacht lines, for both sailboats and powerboats. Our experience saves our clients time, money, and mistakes when purchasing and selling their yachts.

Josh Hodgson is the proud owner of Anchor Yachts. His love of boats started early in life while living aboard a catamaran in the Virgin Islands with his family when he was young. Boats have always been a presence and a passion in his life. He even met his wife while water skiing!

Applying his own sailing experiences, from living aboard a sailboat, to offshore voyages and coastal deliveries aboard a variety of boats, he has gained a firsthand appreciation of what makes a boat ready for sea. In addition, as the owner of Anchor Yachts since 2004, Josh has gained valuable experience by working with boaters to determine what they need in a boat to best accomplish what they are looking to do on the water.

Josh has listened to the comments and concerns of hundreds of boaters and have learned what it is that both men and women want in a proper boat. Through his long standing relationships with previous clients, he has come to know what they love about their boats and what they would like to change.

Josh is proud to have a long track record of helping people get what they want and maintaining positive relationships with his clients long after the sale. He looks forward to helping you expand your horizons on the water.

Pacific Seacraft -Builder of the Razor Cats

Pacific Seacraft was conceived more than 40 years ago in Southern California and has over the years become the preeminent builder of heavy weather capable bluewater sailing vessels.  Astonishingly, each model boat in the line has circumnavigated, with the venerable PS-34, 37, 40, and 44’s continuing to do it with regularity.

In 2007 Pacific Seacraft came under new ownership and was relocated to North Carolina.  Many of the longtime key personnel and department heads made the move to North Carolina and continue there today.  This new era saw an even further evolution of the commitment to robust construction, real world ocean performance, and aesthetic beauty.

Pacific Seacraft has continued to build the Crealock line which remains a very relevant and viable cruising sailboat series.  With Steve Brodie at the helm, the company began to expand their talent base and pursue larger custom and semi-custom projects.  These included the SouthSea 61 designed by Robert Perry, which is available in a dual cockpit ketch and deck salon sloop configurations.  This vessel is a model of modern technical construction with very traditional finishes.  She is billed as a gentleman’s world cruiser whose beauty is only exceeded by her capability.

Working in conjunction with designer Ted Fontaine, Pacific Seacraft built the very unique, and very high tech, Surfari 50 performance sloop for entertainer Jimmy Buffett.  Surfari boasts a lightweight infused epoxy hull with carbon reinforcing structure, carbon chain plates, hydraulic and electric controls for everything from mainsheet to transom tailgate, a pushbutton hydraulic lifting keel in a carbon fiber trunk, etc. All of this was executed with an of exceptional level of craftsmanship throughout, including unmatched interior woodwork details.

On the other end of the spectrum (and indicative of the company’s range), Pacific Seacraft is currently performing a full restoration of the last remaining North Carolina built Skipjack, built in 1915, and a very important part of North Carolinas maritime heritage.

While remaining true to the companies roots by continuing to produce very strong, beautiful, uncompromising vessels; Pacific Seacraft is also embracing new technologies, materials, and processes to continue to evolve and improve performance at sea.  This includes epoxy sandwich infusion construction, employment of high strength aramid and carbon fiber laminates, titanium fabrications, advanced hydraulics, etc.

An uncompromising high quality standard is maintained by performing the work in-house and in the USA.  Additionally, all materials and components undergo a rigorous evaluation with American and European components being employed where possible. While having evolved into more of a semi-custom builder, Pacific Seacraft has maintained and developed a broad range of in-house artisans and capabilities ranging from high tech composite fabrications, to metal fabrication and machining, to exquisite upholstery.  The Pacific Seacraft team boasts over 200 years of combined boatbuilding experience.  This level of experience, range, and control not only ensures a very high standard of quality but also to allow advanced levels of customization and engagement for discerning clients.

We take pride in our happy customers

My wife and I want to take a moment to recognize Cynthia Wummer for her amazing work during the purchase of our first boat, a 2018 Lagoon 40 (SV Southern Wild). We were so incredibly pleased with Cynthia and the way she handled this difficult and complex process with ease! She gave us the “white glove” treatment every step of the way. She was extremely proactive in setting up multiple virtual meetings, she expertly and personally handled our survey abroad, and she even guided the sellers throughout. She was a bulldog when we needed her to be during the negotiations (we honestly felt sorry for the sellers!) but she was also eloquent and used a gentle touch when we hit her with many questions. We can’t say enough about this outstanding experience with Cynthia. She reflects outstanding credit upon The Multihull Company and you guys are lucky to have her on your team! Thank you all so much for making our first boat purchase not only a success, but a treasured memory.

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Boat: Lightwave 45
designed by a highly reputable Australian cat . Quality will vary with the . Many are home built. Great , but you need to extensively the builders capability and reputation.

Boat: Multihulls - cats and Tris
. Waterline is the series, Jeff Schionning has a number of ranges,

Wilderness - simple cruisers with performance, flat panel construction
Cosmos - a little more criusy
Waterline - skinnier hulls more performance less load carrying, still a good cruising but you probably need to be a metre or two longer in the waterline than the wilderness to carry similar load.
G Force - loger and skinnier than the waterline, more performance less load carrying, need to go up another metre or two for similar load carrying.

EG A wilderness 12.5 metre will cart similar loads to a 15 metre gforce and the gforce will be quick.

As Chris says, its all about the build quality.

are outfitted to fulfill the original owners desires, so some have up while others have it down, some will have two cabins and other four, the number of heads vary from boat to boat and so on.

Another thing that will vary greatly (as the previous posters pointed out) is build quality. Some are built in , some in , and some in all the places in between. Some are built by people in their back yards. Quality of materials vary greatly, and since it's a "custom" boat, things like , engines and electrics/plumbing are not the same on two different boats.

I'd recommend having reputable surveyors look at hulls, electronics, engines and . Depending on the size of your investment, it may be worthwhile to have separate surveyors who all specialize in certain "fields" of construction, so they can take an in-depth look at the boat in question.

In an attempt to summarize, like most boats Schionnings probably have a few "issues", but since no two boats are alike, no two boats will have the same problems. This is why it is extra important to have good surveyors and experienced people at hand on sea trials and so on.

Last but not least, welcome to CF!

ratio is leaner at 14.8:1 but has a lighter load capacity. I understand there is at least one other in Darwin.

A great source of information is Schionning themselves. They know each boat and will happily part wth information about the build quality as Jeof visited most during construction.

They are happy to assist with any modifications you might like to do and where you should put them for best weight and functionality. They then treat you as if you were the original customer. Fantastically refreshing to deal with.

I rang them about 6 or 7 boats and they knew each one.

that they knew and issues that may have arisen.

As I said, very helpful and very approachable. They are based in NSW just up near Port Stephens.

Exclusive 76 - an interview of patrick sassier.

schionning catamaran

Patrick Sassier , keeping a keen eye on the ExclusivE76 The 43 years old Patrick Sassier holds since 2005 a position as Exclusive Marine Consultant. A long time professionnal big yacht and charter skipper, Patrick shows plenty of experience to supervise the maxi cat construction phase at the King Cat/VIP composites shipyard in Olonne sur mer (western France) and to finalize Georges Benarroch's plans. Here's what Sassier has to say about this exciting endeavour.

1) How would you define your job at Exclusive Marine? Patrick Sassier : Patrick Sassier : "I started out as Project manager, but i'd rather call myself a consultant. Early in 2005, Georges Benarroch asked me to help him out setting out the final plans for his Maxi cat. Quite naturally I got involved in the building process of the yacht, starting with the molds at the Multiplast shipyard in Vannes (Brittany-France), and moving along with the actual construction at King Cat / VIP Composite. I act very much like a go-between exchanging datas and ideas between ExclusivE Marine and the owner of the first yacht being built. At the moment, i'm concentrating on the building process, working closely with the yard's technicians, with a strong focus on the deck layout, mast rigging, .... all these aspects of a fundamental importance as I shall be the yachts skipper when navigation and tuning up time comes around. I shall also become the owner's first skipper."

schionning catamaran

2) How much experience do you have on this type of yacht? "I've been involved with yachting for over 15 years. I've sailed many different yachts, Classic boats as well as big 80 ft motor boats, not to mention 5 years as a skipper for Magic Cat with over 60 000 miles chartering around the world."

schionning catamaran

3) in your opinion, what makes ExclusivE 76 so much different from other yachts? "

The ExclusivE 76 is a multi functional sailing yacht with a "semi custom" concept. She offers many different sailing opportunities. She can be an owner's personal yacht with as many options as possible as well as a charter yacht. As a Maxi Cat, she offers both comfort and performance, which is in this market category a great asset. Architect Gilles Ollier's experience in multihull sailing is also a great asset. Just by looking at the shape of the hull, one realizes how effective the yacht will be no matter the weather conditions."

4)At what stage is the building of the ExclusivE 76?

"King Cat / VIP Composites shipyard is working around the clock on the first yacht. We are doing great progresses in the building process thanks to the designers and to the shipyards architects. The two hulls have been succesfully unmolded. Deck, flushdeck, floors are being set up and we are already working on the plumbings and on the main engines. We 're still planning a july launching..."

EOS Catamaran

  • 5 place des Coureauleurs 17000 LA ROCHELLE

This story began in 2015, when Pierre-Henri Barbé decided to embark on the design of a catamaran that would combine performance and comfort. A reflection that stems from a personal dream of one day casting off on an ideal boat. It will be the EOS.

Designed by Christophe Barreau and Marc Lombard, renowned naval architects specializing in fast, seaworthy, light and comfortable cruising catamarans. Eos54 and Eos47.

Built in France (world leader in catamarans) by the F. Hervé shipyard (in La Rochelle), a guarantee of a high level of quality, optimizing the weight-to-power ratio in order to promote responsive sailing offering guarantees of safety.

EOS catamarans are intended for discerning sailors, amateurs and professionals alike, eager to rediscover the sensations linked to the finesse of the helm touch (including the tiller) of a sailboat capable of posting more than 15/20 knots at speed.

High-end deep-sea cruising catamaran, designed for long voyages or around the world. The Eos responds to the demand for a semi-tailor-made model for a living environment adapted to the wishes of its owners.

The price of a Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran varies according to the size of the model chosen and your sailing project. Our dealers are at your disposal to guide you in your choice of fittings, packages and options to best suit your boat purchase project . You can find out the starting price of the catamaran of your choice on this page HERE .

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

It is essential to define your sailing program: define the size of the crew on board, the level of sailing knowledge, the sailing project and the target sailing area. Every project is different. Whether you want to enjoy a large Owner’s suite, invite many friends and family on board, or telecommute during your voyage, the Fountaine Pajot cruising catamarans can be adapted to suit your needs. Benefit from reliable, seaworthy and spacious catamarans! Find out more about our Owners’ testimonials here

The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Combined with equipment such as wind turbines or hydro-generators, they compensate for the energy consumption generated by on-board use during cruising. Discover the benefits of the Smart Electric solution with 4 real-life cruise scenarios

The Fountaine Pajot range of electric catamarans is expanding, and now includes 3 Smart Electric models. The Astréa 42, Elba 45 and Aura 51 are now available in this version.

With the help of over 70 engineers, Fountaine Pajot has developed an in-house solution, 100% adapted to the use of its catamarans equipped with hybrid electric motors . All on-board production and energy expenditure flows are managed from a single console designed by our teams to offer a simple, designer user experience. The system we have developed enables us to give priority to the use of renewable energies at all times. Find out more here
