When we asked our readers about your favorite Gen Z slang words , the second most popular answer was low-key. But that’s only because the first most popular answer was what the heck are you talking about?

So I reached out to my teens and their friends to put together an authentic guide to Gen Z slang words. Because to be honest, when they look at the Gen Z slang guides that you find around the web, they are like, “Who even wrote these? No one says that!” Or “WHAT? That’s low-key a Gen Alpha term.”

They helped me put together what we hope is an authentic glossary of Gen Z slang at this particular moment in time. In fact, a lot of the examples of sentences come from their own texts with friends around the country.

There are some caveats: This guide to Gen Z words was compiled by a group of teens 14-19, across the gender spectrum, with diverse backgrounds. However, they are all currently living in and around the New York City area, so the teens where you live may use phrases a little differently, or have different opinions about what a term means. Which is great! One of the cool things about slang, especially in the US, is that it can be fluid, it can be regional, and it may even change from month to month if not week to week

I had heard of ‘skibidi toilet’ but had no idea what it was. As a gen-x parent to 2x gen-z’s and a gen-alpha I try to keep up… So I randomly said the word to my gen-alpha 6-year old and he legit glitched out. I watched him freeze, do a double-take. His eyes darted form side to side and then he froze again. It was both hilarious and a little terrifying to watch. It’s like a secret code-word or kill-switch or something!!

It's called being "demure," an attitude that's now going viral largely thanks to Jools Lebron, a TikTok personality with 1.2 million followers who's clarified what the trend means and what it stands for in several viral videos.

In short, being "demure" means being cutesy, clean, and mindful, not drawing attention to yourself, not being messy or loud, and getting things done and going about your day with quiet confidence and gentility. Dressing modestly at work? That's demure. Are you patiently waiting to leave your seat until the plane is ready to de-board? So demure.

"You see how I do my makeup at work? Very demure, very mindful," Lebron says in  one video with around 18 million views . "I don't come to work with a green-cut crease. I don't look like a clown when I go to work. I don't do too much. I'm very mindful while I'm at work. See how I look very presentable? The way that I came to the interview is the way I go to the job."

Despite the countless users posting content for the "demure" trend, it's unclear whether it's sincere or satirical. Several people have used the "demure" trend seemingly ironically.

Bob the Drag Queen, for instance, posted a  TikTok  putting on outrageous makeup to Lebron's audio describing a demure makeup look in the workplace.

"You see how I take my antidepressants every day? Very demure, very mindful, so I don't fall into a manic episode, depressive episode," another  TikToker  says before taking a psychiatric medication. "Be mindful of why your doctor prescribed you an antidepressant. Very demure."

Brands have gotten in on the trend, too. "not standing immediately when the plane lands is so demure," United Airlines commented on TikTok. Google added, "vacation responder set to on, very demure."

As the "demure" trend continues to grow, some brands are even incorporating the trend in their original content. United Airlines recently posted a TikTok depicting a traveler with a suitcase in an airport, using Lebron's sound. The caption reads, "very demure, very mindful boarding."

Even presidential candidate Kamala Harris has been included in the "brat summer" trend. Shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Harris, Charli XCX announced her support for Harris in a simple statement: "kamala IS brat."

Lebron started a trend that has since gone viral with other users now making videos and posts about being or behaving "demure" in their daily lives or activities.

In a more recent TikTok video on Tuesday , Lebron posted in tears, how the "demure" trend has changed her life.

"Maybe you should make the videos because one day I was playing cashier and making videos on my break and now I’m flying across the country to host events, and I’m going to be able to finance the rest of my transition."

Besides being a makeup artist and TikTok influencer, Lebron also used the platform to open up about being a "plus-sized trans woman" in a TikTok video last year , "Growing up, I was always into feminine things. I like dolls, I was always into Disney Princesses, Bratz, some things never change,” she reflected. “Obviously my family thought it was a phase … it wasn’t. But growing up I never saw myself as a boy liking other boys. I was always like, ‘I’m the girl.’”

What a Trump 2.0 presidency would mean for the stock market

• The odds of a Donald Trump return to the Oval Office are rising after the first presidential debate.
• Another trade war could be a headwind for stocks under a Trump 2.0 presidency, but it wouldn't be enough to stop an AI bubble, according to Capital Economics.
• "We do think inflationary concerns would again push up Treasury yields, just from a different source — tariffs," the firm said.

Following President Joe Biden's struggles at the first presidential debate, the odds of a second Donald Trump presidency are rising. Investors are taking notice.

Even before the debate, Trump was ahead of Biden in various polls and betting markets.

According to a recent note from Capital Economics, a Trump 2.0 presidency would likely have a big impact on the top macro factors that investors are most concerned about: inflation, interest rates, and the US dollar.

All three of those would likely turn higher if Trump was elected as the 47th US President, and that would ultimately represent a headwind for stock prices.

"We don't think there is much scope for Trump to repeat the fiscal expansion and tax breaks which boosted equities during his first term in office; instead, we think the policy most likely to move markets this time would be escalating the 'trade war' with China and potentially imposing universal tariffs on US imports," Capital Economics' market economist James Reilly said.

For his part, Trump said last month that he would consider implementing a sky-high 60% tariff on Chinese goods if he were re-elected. That would be significantly more than the tariffs Trump implemented in 2018 , and not only would it disrupt global trade, but it would likely undo a lot of the progress the Federal Reserve has made in combatting inflation.

"His tariff proposals would probably trigger a rebound in inflation which could persuade the FOMC to raise interest rates," Reilly said. "So, while the source of the inflation impulse would be different (tariffs rather than concerns over expansionary fiscal policy), we think that win for Trump would once again push up Treasury yields."

Additionally, Reilly said Trump's potential tariffs would subtract up to 1.5% from US GDP and hurt corporate profits.

And this, combined with the fact that there would likely be little appetite in Congress for Trump to enact fiscal expansion programs like he did during his first Presidential term, the US dollar would move higher, which would represent another headwind for stock prices , since it would make exports more expensive.

"A Trump win might lead to the dollar staying stronger for longer, or rising significantly from here, if his tariff policies prompted the FOMC to shift back to tighter policy and/or set off a wider trade war that undermined global growth and spurred safe-haven demand for the greenback," Reilly said. 

Despite the potential headwinds for stock prices under a Trump 2.0 Presidency, Capital Economics thinks the stock market would perform just fine, perhaps even incredibly well, because an AI hype bubble would outweigh all of those macro concerns.

"Our upbeat projections for the stock market in 2024 and 2025 are predicated on a view that hype over AI will continue to fuel a stock market bubble. We don't think that the increase in risk-free discount rates or the hit to GDP would be big enough to burst this bubble," Reilly said.

"So, we would be inclined to only slightly lower our S&P 500 forecast of 6,500 by end-25, if Trump won."

Parents and Gen Alpha kids are having unintelligible convos because of ‘brainrot’ language

In the beginning, there was “skibidi.”

It appeared abruptly in the lexicons of kids under 14 — the first slang term unique to Generation Alpha. Parents’ ears perked up as they began to hear it around the dinner table. It could mean bad, cool, or nothing at all, their kids explained. Then a dozen more incomprehensible terms followed suit. 

Gen Z’s “slay” and “tea” are officially vintage, giving way to “sigma,” “gyatt” and “fanum tax.”

Everyone’s getting whiplash.

Children born after 2010, Gen Alpha are the internet’s newest darlings. Though their separation from Gen Z is a matter of being born in 2010 versus 2009, many of their parents feel like there’s a chasm when it comes to understanding the way they speak.

Intergenerational conversations are getting less and less intelligible, some said.

Gen Alpha’s hyper online manner of speaking has been dubbed “brainrot,” mostly by older Gen Zer’s who share spaces like TikTok with them.  It’s slang that’s often niche and insular to the internet — sometimes making its way from Roblox to Twitch to TikTok — which is why some older generations find it uniquely difficult to make sense of. 

“Every day there’s just another set of terms,” said Camille Nisich, 53, parent to a 14- and 15- year-old. “They’ll just be talking, and my husband and I are kind of like, ‘We’re not sure what that means.’”

Even younger kids with limited internet access have picked up on them. Michael Petersen, 45, says his 9- and 11-year-old daughters leave him baffled with some of their slang.

“I try to get them to explain what they mean, and I usually end up still totally confused,” he said.

“It’s meant to create this in-group which alienates older people,” said content creator and linguist Adam Aleksic, who makes videos tracing the origin of internet slang terms. “And it can be hard for older people to catch up because you’ve got to be very current with the fads. It evolves so quickly online.”

With the new slang, Gen Alpha itself has gained a reputation. Its random lingo has been described as cringe, the work of “mini millennials” and “iPad kids” — but experts say this generational reaction is not new.

The new slang and how we got here

Many of the Gen Alpha kids who use “skibidi” as part of their daily lingo still don’t really know what it means. 

It started with a now-76-part animated YouTube series called “skibidi toilet.” Now it’s used to mean basically anything. But it’s so big now that mainstream Hollywood has taken notice too. Director Michael Bay is set to give “skibidi toilet” the film and TV treatment with a franchise that’s in the works. 

“You don’t really use it in sentences, you kind of just say it randomly,” said Petersen’s daughter Beryl, 11. You can describe someone as skibidi, she said, but it’s not a good thing or a bad thing. “It’s just a weird thing.”

But it’s far from the only term making the rounds online. Millennials and Gen Zers with Gen Alpha siblings have made videos on TikTok defining some of the new key terms to know: 

“Sigma,” for example, means someone who is cool or a leader, kids said. 

“Ohio,” on the other hand, means weird or cringe — based on memes that reference “only in Ohio” type of incidents that happen in the state.

“Negative aura” has replaced Gen Z’s “bad vibes.”

 “Fanum tax” means to steal something. Go figure.

Many of the terms originate on video-game-focused live streaming app Twitch and were popularized by viral streamers like Kai Cenat, a gamer with 13 million followers. The term “rizz” (meaning charm or charisma) for example, was used first on his stream, said Aleksic. So was “fanum tax,” named for Cenat’s friend Fanum, who once stole a piece of his food during a livestream.

Having rizz is making someone fall for you, said Beryl and her little sister Marigold, 9. “Like if you say, ‘Are you from Tennessee, cuz you’re the only 10 I see,’” Marigold said.

Some of the worlds, like “sigma,” have transcended their first slang iterations and are now just a filler for basically anything. You might hear a kid say, “What the sigma?” for example.

“It’s hard to tell when people are using it ironically and when people are using it unironically,” Aleksic said. “Gen Alpha is self-aware that these words are seen as funny, which is why they use them.”

Blowing up Gen Alpha’s treasure trove of slang was a song that went viral on TikTok earlier this year that consolidated basically all of them into one meme. Its lyrics go:

“Sticking out your gyatt for the rizzler / you’re so skibidi / you’re so fanum tax / I just wanna be your sigma / freaking come here / give me your Ohio.”

Marigold translated a portion: “Gyatt is a big butt,” she said.

While family members of kids who speak this way might be left scratching their heads, Aleksic says it’s not so different from the way other slang has developed. The point of any slang is for elders not to know the meaning, he said.

“Thats part of the appeal,” he said. “These memes wouldn’t be funny if your grandma was saying them. That’s how memes start to die.”

If older people became privy, it would kill the vibe, he said. He anticipates that in a few years, these words, like Gen Z’s “yeet” and “bae” will reach their expiration date and be replaced by new words.

Disdain for new slang does, of course, transcend generations

The terms are throwing parents for a loop, and some say even their younger children who have restricted internet access are repeating them.

“There was one — skibidi toilet Ohio rizzler — we just thought it was like nonsense,” said Neal Broverman, 46, whose son Calvin is 8.

They have Google at the ready when their kids say something they don’t understand, but sometimes there are so many layers to knowing the true context. Most of the terms are born on the internet from internet memes or games, and that’s where they spread, evolve and die.

“I will say, ‘What does that mean?’ And then they gotta tell us all the backstory,” Nisich said. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, well, if you were an old-school player of Roblox, you knew about this game. And then this Twitch streamer said this term, and, if you weren’t playing back in the day, you don’t know what that meant.”

The kids know they’re confusing their parents. They mean to.

When older people try to use Gen Alpha slang, “It’s kind of embarrassing,” Beryl said.

They’re also fully aware of the chronically online reputation they have among older generations.

“Gen Alpha is described as obsessed with skin care, makeup, skibidi and rizzler,” Beryl said. “Not a bad reputation, just an edgy or sassy reputation.”

Gen Zers in their 20s are looking on in horror at who is inheriting the internet from them, with many posting videos of their own calling their younger counterparts and their “brainrot” language “scary” and accusing them of not being able to read or write.

“There’s not much inherently different between a Gen Z person and a Gen Alpha person, but each generation feels threatened by the successive generations,” Aleksic said.

The main thing different about Gen Alpha’s slang is the speed at which it’s spreading.

“Nothing is inherently new about how words are evolving,” Aleksic said. “It’s still the same linguistic processes. But we are seeing the internet is causing language change to happen faster. It’s causing it to happen more tied to maybe social media trends than ever before … because social media algorithms are rewarding trending words.”

Slang terms of older generations faced similar vitriolic reactions, he said. Now, some of those, like “cool” and even “photograph,” are a regular and accepted parts of the English language.

“Every single person throughout history has always complained about how the younger generations are ruining language with their made-up slang,” Aleksic said. “That’s why they’re doing it: because they’re building identity. They’re differentiating themselves.”

Just How Demure Are You?

A TikTok trend has breathed new life into a fusty word.

If you opened TikTok this week and felt that suddenly everyone was using the word “demure” out of nowhere, you’re not alone.

Your morning coffee with just a little half-and-half? Demure. The way you sit down gracefully on the subway? Very demure. The way you floss your teeth after lunch in the office bathroom before returning to your cubicle? Absolutely, totally demure.

Seemingly overnight, an adjective usually reserved for a reserved woman has become the semi-ironic word du jour on social media.

On Aug. 2, a TikTok creator who goes by the name Jools Lebron posted a video with tips about managing makeup and mustache sweat and being demure.

Later that day, she posted another video , which has been viewed four million times, offering tips on how to be demure at work. “Very demure, very mindful," she says, explaining her perfume, clothing and hairstyle choices for the workplace. Ms. Lebron has since posted dozens more such videos discussing how to be demure in all sorts of situations, like nail salons, hotels and drag shows.

Ms. Lebron, who did not respond to requests for comment, is one of several trans creators on TikTok whose playful use of “demure” in recent videos has helped the word catch on with other users.

“There has been so many demure divas who have come before me,” Ms. Lebron said in a video , naming two fellow content creators as well as Venus Xtravaganza, a trans performer who featured prominently in the influential documentary “ Paris Is Burning .”

On TikTok, the word has spread far beyond its original roots. Now, the viral term has become fodder for brands, like the restaurant chain Chili’s and the New York City Department of Sanitation, which posted on Instagram that the city’s new official garbage bins were … you know what .

Madison Malone Kircher Let’s start with the big question on everyone’s minds: What exactly does “demure” mean in this moment?

Callie Holtermann Every few weeks, a new word starts getting repeated ad nauseam online in ways that only sort of relate to its original definition. Last week, that word was “brat.” This week, it’s basically the exact opposite: “demure.”

Gina Cherelus Someone who is demure is typically reserved and modest, so it’s always fascinating to see how a word has strayed from its meaning. Now, people online are using it to describe their style of dress, hair or even their simple latte order.

Melissa Guerrero I’ve also seen people use the word to describe manners, their cleaning habits and setting boundaries with other people.

Gina Cherelus Someone who is mindful, perhaps even cutesy?

Madison Malone Kircher Right, Gina, there also seems to be a constellation of related words: “mindful,” “cutesy,” “respectful,” to name a few.

Callie Holtermann Demure is not bold and flashy. It’s tucking your hair behind your ear. It’s a Peter Pan collar. It’s nibbling on some raspberries!

Callie Holtermann I don’t think the people using this term online are actually pushing for people — women, especially — to be more restrained and deferential. I think it’s all kind of a bit.

Melissa Guerrero There’s a hint of sarcasm in demure. I don’t know if wholesome feels like that.

Callie Holtermann They’re saying it with a wink: I know that this is typically the affect we associate with femininity, and I’m going to subvert it a bit by applying it to my coffee order or my favorite Real Housewife.

Gina Cherelus I think what’s also happening is that people are tailoring it to themselves with additional phrases and words in an attempt to prove they are better at it then the next person. It’s slightly competitive. Like, You might wear your hair in big curls, but I wear a tight bun because I’m demure, not extra.

Madison Malone Kircher Patrick Ta, the makeup artist, invited Jools Lebron to a brand event in New York this week, which feels like a textbook example of how viral moments quickly become corporate these days.

Anthony Rotunno The word-of-the-week-to-brand-ambassador pipeline strikes again! When was the last time any of you used the word “demure” before this past week? It feels so old-timey.

Gina Cherelus Almost never, but TikTok reminded me that Emily Gilmore from the show “Gilmore Girls” once referred to Rory as such, so yes: old-timey.

Madison Malone Kircher Is Tim Walz demure? Don’t answer that. We’ve seen several recent trends — coquette , the rise of the trad wife — that emphasize the ultrafeminine. Is this related?

Callie Holtermann The way it’s being used now feels related to the great “girl”-ification of the internet last summer: girl dinner , hot girl walk . I think it’s being used in a way that’s broader than the actual definition. Some of this stuff isn’t actually shy or modest.

Madison Malone Kircher Exactly. Making videos for millions on the internet isn’t actually demure. And that’s the point.

Callie Holtermann It feels like a way of establishing one’s own parameters for femininity (and maybe even poking fun at the old ones). Trad wives might be demure in a literal sense, but the people using the word online now are going to stretch and reshape its definition into something that feels authentic — or at least fun and silly — to them.

Madison Malone Kircher Fun, silly and everywhere. I feel like my For You Page is entirely people making demure content at this point.
