Massey Enterprises, Incorporated has continuously been in the yacht sales and outfitting business in Florida since 1977. Massey Yacht Sales & Service has continuously been in the yacht sales and outfitting business since 1986. During that nearly forty year period Massey has sold and outfitted new and pre-owned sailboats, trawlers, motoryachts, downeast style yachts, sailing and power catamarans. Massey has sold and delivered in excess of 4,000 yachts from 28’ to 62’.

Over the years Massey has been dealers for Island Packet, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Catalina, Hunter, Nordic Tug, Mariner and Helmsman Trawlers, True North, Albin and Mainship trawlers and downeast boats.  Massey was the sole sales agent in the United States for Sunsail boats being placed into charter for twelve years. Massey has owned a sailing yacht charter company in the Tampa Bay area.

The brokerage business has grown every year at Massey Yacht Sales. They are and have been the number one brokerage house for the sale of sailing yachts from 30’ to 55’ in the state of Florida for the past seven years. Their trawler, motoryacht and down east business is increasing every year as well. The three marina offices have been the key to growing the brokerage business. Massey has offered high visibility slips at discounted rates to brokerage yacht owners that list their yachts with Massey for over 20 years. The future growth in their brokerage yacht sales will center around their growing team of Mobile Brokers.

I recently made a contract to purchase a Back Cove 29, which, unfortunately, was being brokered by Massey Yacht Sales & Service employee Jose Torres. Mr. Torres was, in my opinion, not very well versed in the business of yacht brokerage. In addition, I asked him a number of times, and very pointedly, if I could expect, upon closing, to receive a bill of sale signed and notarized by the seller. After some strong language to get a reply, he admitted that I would only get a bill of sale signed by the broker by power of attorney. I found that interchange to be shifty on the part of Mr. Torres - so I pulled out of the contract. I wrote the following to Mr. Ed Massey: I am having a terrible time with Mr. Torres.  At first he would not send me a copy of the pule signed and notariarchase agreement until the deposit was paid; but he overlooked telling me about this requirement until I asked him directly if the seller had signed and if so where was the contract. Now I have had to ask him multiple times about my requirement to eventually receive a bill of sale signed and notarized by the seller.    He eventually told me it would come via a power of attorney and not directly from the owner.  Mr, Torres informed me further People hire Massey to not deal with the Buyers. Mr. Torres talks down to me, for example: Massey is a reputable company with over 40 years in business. We are all licensed and bonded brokers and agents in the State of Florida.  In any transaction we serve as Agents to our clients.  This is done for our client's protection as well as for your protection. As such, we have protocols that we have to follow for our industry in Florida. This means that all communication between seller and buyer is managed through Massey. I am sorry if these procedures do not meet your expectations. If you are not comfortable with the transaction, then I will send you a Rejection of Vessel Document to sign. Once signed, Alice will be contacting you to get instructions to return your deposit. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. I am a lawyer with ample experience buying and selling yachts.  I have lost faith in Mr. Torres and his swagger and his lack of forthrightness, and I am about to rescind this deal. In sum, can I get another broker? Mr. Massey replied as follows: I spoke to both Jose Torres and Alice Winter to make sure I understood your requests. Jose has given you the correct information regarding how we must proceed when listing or selling a yacht. The state of Florida licensing department and the IYBA, International Yacht Brokers Association mandates a series of steps and the sequence in which the communication, documentation, escrowing deposits, sea trials, surveys, acceptance or rejection of vessels must follow. Your requests, while genuine, has not allowed us to follow that protocol. I am sorry we were not able to satisfy you but we must follow the rules regarding all our transactions. I'm setting the return of your deposit via wire transfer now. To this, I responded as follows: Mr. Massey, everything you say must be correct.  However, you fail to address the specific concern that I had.  That is, I wanted a bill of sale signed and notarized by the boat's current owner.  I do not believe that either the State of Florida or the IYBA prohibits such.Yet, you are telling me just that.  The form bill of sale provided by the U.S. Coast Guard provides for the signature of the boat owner and for such signature to be notarized.  Maybe you are unfamiliar with this document so I have attached a copy for your review.  Please relate to me the specific law of the State of Florida or rule of the IYBA that prohibits an owner from signing and notarizing a bill of sale.  Thank you. Mr. Massey has not replied....... In my opinion, one should be very careful when dealing with Massey Yacht Sales & Service.

BEWARE: POSSIBLE DEPOSIT SCAM I visited Massey Yachts in Polmetto to view a Catalina 36 2 days ago, after making an offer i was called back with news the seller had accepted. After doing my title and rego checks online one the hull number was provided it come to my attention that the title was canceled and in a completely different number to the one provided. I emailed Susan expressing my concerns and asking for clarification, she refused to answer any question via email and would only talk over the phone, this was the first red flag.. I was then instructed my deposit of 10% needed to be paid in cash or cashiers check only.. second red flag. After 2 days waiting for simple clarification via email Susan continued to sms msg me asking when i was coming with the deposit. I had not been provided and signed copy of the agreement from the seller, no deposit details for making payment and no other information requested besides a few pieces of paper with advertised info. WORST EXPERIENCE WITH A BROKER THUS FAR... DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY

I recently worked with Susan Opland at Massey Yacht sales and services during my search for a used sailboat in the 32 to 39 foot range. I live in Colorado which complicates my search. I called Susan about a boat and arranged a trip to visit the boat at Massey, and a boat at another brokerage. The Massey boat was clean and found to be as represented. Susan was knowledgeable and helpful. I took some time to look over the boat and systems and was never rushed or pressured. After my inspection I made an offer, paid a deposit and scheduled a survey. Once I selected a surveyor, Susan assisted in scheduling the haul out. I contacted Susan multiple times with questions, and she was always available, responsive and knowledgeable. I flew back out for the survey and Susan had everything ready. Unfortunately the survey detected moisture in the deck and I stopped the survey and exited the contract. Susan and Massey yachts were professional, and accepted my decision with no pressure or push back. I left the Massey office a short time later with a refund check for my deposit in hand. I was very pleased with Susan and Massey yachts and would definitely work with them again.

I personally engaged Ed Massey to sell my used IP 44. In over 50 years of boating, I've bought and sold numerous boats and have dealt with boat brokers from N. Carolina to Texas. Ed Massey presents himself as knowledgeable on boat value and as dedicated to his client's best interest. My experience tells me that's not so. Massey's salesperson generated an offer on my boat which I felt was inadequate. Massey personally advised me that the offer was the most I could expect and that I must immediately accept or he would terminate our contract and file a lien for cleaning expenses that he claimed were due. He also said that if the offer was not accepted, the boat would have to be removed immediately from the marina where he conducts business. I reside 700 miles from the marina and transfer to a new marina on short notice was problematic at best. His message to me was insulting and scurrilous. I refused as I felt the offer was too low and the cleaning expenses were inflated and unauthorized. End result? The salesperson soon generated another offer, higher by $5000, and the boat sold shortly thereafter for a price that Massey said was unobtainable. I refused to pay the inflated cleaning charge which was ultimately reduced by over 50%. If you want a representative who will work hard to obtain the best price for your used boat, and who will treat you respectfully and in a professional manner, I suggest you stear clear of this fellow. james wattigny

Jose joins Massey after a successful 28-year career in sales, technology, risk management and business consulting working for global consultancy firms PriceWaterhouse, Ernst & Young and Protiviti and super regional insurance companies and banks. He earned his B.S. in Computer Science from Iowa State University located in Ames, IA in 1988. Jose had his first experience boating while growing up in Puerto Rico running his father’s sport fishing boat on the west coast of the island. While in college he worked for 3 years for The Boy Scouts of America as a National Staff at the Florida Sea Base in Islamorada, FL where he was first licensed as a captain and ran base boats to take scouts diving and supported the sailing programs. After college, Jose spend several years working as a licensed captain running dive charters and teaching scuba diving, for Lady Cyana Divers and Florida Keys Dive Center in the Florida Keys. In 2013, Jose expanded his interest of boating by becoming a sailor. While living in Coconut Grove, FL he joined the Coconut Grove Sailing Club where he learned to sail and became US Sailing certified sailor through Basic Cruising certification. He participated in many regattas as captain and crew. Through his demonstrated boating & sailing experiences and business background Jose has a proven track record of building relationships, understanding his customer’s needs and identifying the best solutions for his customers.
