Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Mens Business wins 73rd Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race

CYCA Member Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Mens Business is the overall winner of the 73rd Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race.

Secret Mens Business was the first monohull over the line, finishing the 160 nautical mile race in 15 hours, 20 minutes and 18 seconds.

The five 52-footers led the way in the overall standings (IRC), with Secret Mens Business first, ahead of Zen (CYCA Member Gordon Ketelbey), Another Hooligan (Nicholas George), Smuggler (CYCA Member Seb Bohm) and Quest (CYCA Member Craig Neil).

“It was very close, the five TPs at Marion were so close to each other, there was nothing in it, really good racing,” Boettcher told Down Under Sail.

“We snuck around ahead of them and then it was dog-eat-dog, everyone had a turn at hitting the front.

“It was a bit of a tough one along Yorkes [Peninsula], but once we cut around the corner at Cape Spencer everything was a dream. It was nice and easy, good running, probably the easiest one I’ve done for many years.

“We know if we can stay with them [the other TPs] on the wind, we’re a downwind boat and once we get a kite up or in a configuration that suits us, we can pull away which we did and that’s where we broke away.”

CYCA Member Brett Averay’s Peterson 44 Bacardi won IRC Division 2 and was 10th overall.

Other handicap wins went to Zen (ORCAP Overall, ORCAP Division 1) and Bacardi (ORCAP Division 2, AMS Division 2).

The Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race was also the opening race of the Australian Yachting Championship, which is part of the Lincoln Week Regatta.

The regatta continues with six races from Monday 20 – Thursday 23 February.

He and his crew emerged victorious in a competitive five-boat Division 1 fleet, made up of four other 52s including Zen, Another Hooligan, Smuggler and Quest.

Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen finished in second overall, while Nick George’s Another Hooligan rounded out the podium in third.

The race will also count as the first Division 1 race of the Australian Yachting Championship, which is hosted this year as part of the Lincoln Week Regatta.

Bob Dunn’s Grainger 42 Trimaran, Venom, was awarded the line honours trophy for the first boat over the line, while also claiming the OMR win ahead of Charles Meredith’s Peccadillo.

On AMS, it was Derek Morrison’s Sintara that took out Division 1 after an excellent race, ahead of Seb Bohm’s Smuggler in second and Julian Newton’s Game On in third.

Division 2 AMS saw Brett Averay’s Bacardi claim the win, ahead of Barb Parker and Jim Gordon’s Papillon in second and Matt Fahey’s Faster Forward in third.

The Overall combined AMS results saw Sintara take the win ahead of Bacardi in second and Smuggler in third.

On PHS it was Sintara which took the win in Division 1, ahead of Scott Mutton’s 3 Cool Cats in second and Alan Woodward’s Reverie in third.

Division 2 PHS saw Faster Forward take the win ahead of Bacardi in second and Stuart Johnson’s Audacious in third.

Overall PHS was won by Sintara with Faster Forward in second and 3 Cool Cats in third.

The ORC division was also on offer in this year’s race and was won by Zen with Smuggler in second and Reverie in third.

74th Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht race.

adelaide to port lincoln yacht race

Over the weekend two RBYC boats, Another Chapter and JAMHU, joined 21 other yachts in the 74th Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht race. This 160nm race started in Adelaide on Friday afternoon with the course taking yachts across the Gulf of St Vincent to Marion Reef at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula, into Investigator Strait towards Cape Spencer before the fleet turned northwest towards Cape Donington and into Port Lincoln. The section of the course from around Cape Spencer to Dangerous Reef, about 15 miles SE of Port Lincoln, is a navigator’s nightmare with numerous islands and reefs along the rhumb line. Many of these are unlit and to make things more interesting this section is sailed at night, often under spinnaker with a strong following wind. This year proved no different. The race started in 10-15knot south westerly breeze that strengthened and backed to the SE allowing the yachts to cross the Gulf of St Vincent on one port tack with the leading yachts reaching Marion Reef just on dark. The fleet then reached under headsails across Investigator Strait to Cape Spencer before setting spinnakers for the run home to Port Lincoln. The wind was 15-20 knots and shifted between 80 – 135 degrees with the shift to 80 degrees both unpredicted and unexpected. As often is the case at night, it was during this section that the race was won and lost. Most of the fleet had finished by lunchtime on Saturday with the two RBYC boats finishing 8th and 9th on AMS. After the usual post race refreshments and a good sleep, the crews of Another Chapter and JAMHU are preparing for the Tackle Classic Lincoln Regatta, a mix of windward/leeward and passage races sailed on the sheltered waters of Boston Bay – think Geelong without the channel, ships and ferries! 100th Port Huron-to Mackinac Island Sailboat Race draws large crowds

More than 300 sailboats packed into the Black River to join the 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat race on July 20, 2024.

Every year John Lusk meets his friends near the Port Huron Yacht Club, setting up camp in the shade of the same tree to watch the parade of boats heading to the start of the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race.

It's a fun tradition among the friends, but every year it seemed there were a few less boats than in the previous race. That was, until this year when they sat down to watch the centennial race. The 100 year celebration seemed to breathe new life into the race, drawing more boats, more sailors and more onlookers.

"We were just talking about the number of boats and how it's a throwback to previous years," Lusk said.

Sailboats from across the country were gathered on the Black River Monday to participate in the 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race. According to the race's website, 316 teams were registered to compete in the centennial race, about 100 more than joined in 2023.

This year's race follows the original course created in 1925, which will take boats north along the shoreline before heading west, passing south of Bois Blanc Island and finishing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island. This course is 204 nautical miles.

Kenneth Tanner, a Grosse Pointe resident joining the race as part of the California Girl's crew, said he was proud to join in the 100th race. He said he also sailed in the 100th Chicago-to-Mackinac Island Boat Race in 2008.

"It's a classic race, and to do this for the centennial race is an honor," Tanner said.

It's Bobby Bloomfield's first time participating in the race, though he has experience from other races. He joined the crew of the Siochail through an acquaintance who recommended him for the sailing team.

Bloomfield is working with one of the most experienced sailors in the race, Brian Geraghty. He's participated in the race every year it was run for 44 years and was the historian for the Bayview Yacht Club.

Geraghty said he accepted Bloomfield on the team because he's from Chatman, Ontario and likes the recruit Canadians to join the race.

Right next to the Siochail was the Contender. Scott Graham, who travelled from Florida to Port Huron to participate in the race said this year it is taking place on his 50th anniversary, so it's an uniquely special occasion.

"It's a hallmark race and it's special to be joining with my dad," Graham said.

The Contender won the M Class race in 2016, a feat they're hoping they can pull of a second time.

Down the river is another team looking to add a win under their belts, the crew of the Pirate. Captain Jeff Henderson, another Florida resident, has won the Class P Cruising race running the 1925 course nine times in almost 50 years of competing.

"Each year is better than the year before," Henderson said.

Each crew member wears a shirt with a pirate on the back saying "Give us the island and no one gets hurt," a cheeky reference to their destination in the race. Henderson said his boat brings a long history with it, having been built in France in 1992 (the crew is sure this is lucky because crew member Pierre Fleury is a French native) and that he bought it in the British Virgin Islands.

"The trick is to be lucky, and to have the right crew when it matters," Henderson said.

The race can be tracked online at https://bycmack.com/tracking/ .
