Conanicut Yacht Club Around the Island Race 2021

Published on September 6th, 2021 by Editor -->

Favorable winds, advantageous tide, and warm weather provided the 94th Conanicut Yacht Club Around the Island Race with excellent conditions for the 90 boats that on September 6 lapped the 18 miles around Jamestown, Rhode Island. When scores were calculated, it was the smallest boat among the fleet, the 18-foot VXOne, which hoisted the Commodore John Quinn Trophy for the fastest corrected time of 2:47:27.

Nick Woviotis of Newport and Mike Komar of Jamestown onboard SPACE CADET won by nearly 10 minutes over 2nd place’s Jim Madden with his new Carkeek 47, STARK RAVING MAD IX, and 3rd place’s (and 2019 overall winner) Chris Cannon’s Alden 62, VERISSIMO. Madden was also the winner of the Commodore Bruce R. Brakenhoff Memorial Trophy for the fastest elapsed time.

“As the smallest boat in the fleet, it was foot on the throttle the whole time and wave management was the key to our success,” said Woviotis. “Mike [Komar] drove through them perfectly and we were both nearly hiking off the stern to get around those 3-5 footers around Beavertail then just trying to keep a clean lane as all the faster boats caught up to us.” SPACE CADET saw 15 knots as their top speed of the day in winds ranging from 10-18 knots.

The competition ranged from 40-66 foot racing machines down to the VXOne fleet and 20-30 foot cruising boats split among nine PHRF-rated classes.

around the island yacht race

“The great part about CYC’s signature event is that serious sailors and family cruisers all take part,” said Patrick Muldoon, a 20+ year veteran of the annual race and co-chair of the event. “Everyone got around safely so we can’t ask for more than that.”

Nearly 25% of all PHRF certificates in Narragansett Bay competed in the Annual Event. “Ninety boats is the perfect number for us,” said returning co-chair Alan Baines. “It’s manageable and coupled with great weather, we can’t ask for more.”

Individual class starts began at 1100 with the higher-rated non-spinnaker boats with faster boats starting later. The winds were southerly all day – making the race a true windward-leeward course. Crews started upwind towards Beavertail with the tide with them rounding the southern end of the island just as the tide turned and raced dead-downwind to the northern tip of Conanicut Island before heading back upwind again to finish off the yacht club.

54-knot winds severely deplete 2024 Round the Island Race fleet

Helen Fretter

Extreme conditions severely depleted the fleet of the 2024 Round the Island Race, with hundreds of boats opting not to compete or retiring in 50-knot winds

around the island yacht race

Competitors in today’s 2024 Round the Island Race , an annual 50-mile circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, faced one of the most severe conditions in years with gusts of over 50 knots recorded at The Needles, the westernmost point of the course.

The Round the Island Race traditionally attracts one of the largest fleets of any yacht race, and this year saw 939 boats originally entered.

However, today’s extreme conditions have severely depleted both the number of starters and finishers, and just 153 yachts completed the race with 418 retiring.

First to complete the course was Irvine Laidlaw’s Gunboat 80 Highland Fling , which posted an impressive elapsed time of 3h 39m 5s.

Owner Irvine Laidlaw said: “It was the first event for us in 2024 and we’ve travelled over 3,000 miles from Palma to be here but it’s worth it! I thoroughly enjoyed the race – I like the fact we go around an island with the start and finish in the same place, it’s rather satisfying.”

Boat captain Xavier Mecoy added: “[The] Boat is only a year old and it’s the first time we’ve sailed her in a big breeze, we’ve never had 2 reefs in the main before, so that was pretty exciting and we spent quite a bit of time sailing bare-headed as it was safer.

“We were charging around the course doing 30 knots of boat speed at times.”

First monohull around was the Cowes based TP52 Notorious , owned by Peter Morton, who finished more than 40 minutes ahead of the nearest monohull yacht in 4h 21m 20s.

Notorious also finished 1st overall in IRC on correcrted time, winning the coveted Gold Roman Bowl.

Peter Morton, owner and skipper of Notorious, said: “I’ve not had the boat that long but I’ve competed in Round the Island Race many times over the last 50 years in various boats I’ve owned.

“It’s one of the most famous yacht races in the World and we went out to try and win. It’s 40 years ago since I won it on a little 25ft boat called Odd Job , so today was very special for me.”

54 knots at the Needles

Despite a deceptively sunny start as the first fleets set off from the Royal Yacht Squadron at 0600, conditions quickly deteriorated to become even more extreme than many forecasts had suggested. The Needles Battery wind station (above the famous rock formation) recorded gusts of 54 knots from 0700 and a steady wind of 39-45 knots from the south-west. Competitors reported 35-40 knots going through Hurst Narrows.

This led to a severe sea state on the south of the island which saw many boats which had started choosing to turn back before the Needles. Fewer than 100 boats in the IRC and ISCRS fleets (the majority of monohulls) were recorded as rounding the Needles.

Many of those retiring have reported sail damage, particularly torn mainsails. There was a collision off Yarmouth, and at least one man overboard incident, which was recovered swiftly. However, organisers report that there were just nine other incidents – fewer than in previous years. Local RNLI and Independent Lifeboat crews were on the water across the Solent and on the south of the island supporting the fleet throughout the day.

David Rolfe, skipper of the Sigma 33 Shadowfax was one boat whose race ended by the Needles. Shadowfax  was welcoming her new part owners aboard for their very first race on the boat.

“We started with a reef and our Number 2 [jib],” explained Rolfe. “It was, I would say deceptively – not calm, but quieter than forecast. When we came off the line, and if anything, it then dropped a little bit. As we headed down the Solent we even had a little bit of a talk about how we might set the spinnaker lines for when we’re on the south side of the island.

“Then a weather band that came in, a whole load of rain squalls, and that just changed mode completely. Suddenly we were in full on, probably 30-odd knots, gusting high 30s. It was a bit on and off through those squalls, some heavy rain, maybe even a little bit of hail in amongst it.

“The sea state was a bit rough, but not crazy. And then as we got towards Hurst, it went up another level. We could see it coming down the track towards us, and a few boats were really on their ear. One boat was definitely 45 degrees or more over, out of control, just pushed on its side by the wind. So we were battened down and gearing up for that.

“Then we got pushed right on our ear. We’d trimmed the main out. We’re trying to control it, but we were right on our side and going slowly, and almost sideways! I don’t know the wind strength, probably gusting into the 40s. And the sea was getting bigger and rougher with wind over tide really driving it pretty hard. So we decided we needed to go for a second reef, put that in. And after putting that in [we] tacked off to go into the full [tidal] stream through Hurst.

“That’s when we saw, unfortunately, we’d ripped our main, probably as we were reefing it. That was the end of the race for us. We bore away and hurtled back, surfing down these waves on our way back to Cowes.”

2024 Round the Island fleets cancelled

The race typically attracts a large cohort of family and amateur crews, for many of whom this is the only race they may compete in all year. A building forecast over the preceding week had led many competitors to withdraw ahead of the race.

The day before, organisers had also announced that eight classes would not start . Racing was cancelled for the Classic Racing Yacht (ISCRS), Diam 2 class, Gaffers under 23ft, J/70s, both divisions of Bridgedeck Multihulls, the smaller Grand Prix and MOCRA Multihulls, and the Sportsboat division.

Race safety officer Mark Southwell said on Friday 14 June, when making the announcement: “We will only cancel fleets where there is a significant chance that the majority of the fleet could get into difficulties and risk injury to the crew, a situation that could quickly overwhelm the support services.

“For other fleets, with a wide range of crew experience and boat types, it is each skipper’s sole responsibility to evaluate the capability of their crew and the suitability of their boat to handle the expected conditions (including wind and sea state) and make the decision as to whether their boat should take part.”

Race Director, Dave Atkinson said in a statement from the organisers after the race: “This race was a challenge for both the competitors and the Race Team at the Island Sailing Club, with the safety and well-being of the crews being the main priority.”

“We would like to thank the RNLI, independent lifeboats and coastguard teams for their assistance and co-operation before and during the race on Saturday. Despite the challenging conditions we only had nine incidents connected to the race which is less than previous years, this shows the seamanship of the crews and the correct decision making that went into undertaking of the race.”

Round The Island Race 2024 results: Notorious wins amid wet and wild conditions

round-the-island-race-2024-results-02_RIR_Notorious_Paul-Wyeth

Boisterous conditions during the 2024 Round The Island Race made for a thrilling race which provided challenges for both competitors and race organisers…

Some years the annual Round the Island Race is a gentle stroll around the Isle of Wight in gentle summer sunshine. 2024 was anything but…

This is the UK’s biggest mixed fleet race on the calendar but Saturday’s race saw strong winds, with gusts of up to lash the south coast meaning that a number of smaller classes were withdrawn before the race and many others retired.

The most extreme conditions were experienced in the pinch point that is the Needles Channel. Gusts of 50kn were recorded and wind over tide conditions at times made for truly intimidating conditions. In the end just 153 yachts completed the course with a remarkable 418 retiring.

round-the-island-race-2024-results-01_RIR_Firebrand-IRC-Div2C_Paul-Wyeth

In such conditions it was no surprise that big boats came to the fore and it was to be Irvine Laidlaw’s 80’ Gunboat Highland Fling that took line honours, making the circuit in an impressive 3h 39m.

Meanwhile the TP52 Notorious , owned and skippered by Peter Morton took monohull line honours and won IRC on corrected time, scooping the much coveted Gold Roman Bowl in the process.

Peter Morton, owner and skipper of Notorious said: “This is one of the world’s greatest races and every year I look forward to it. I’ve not had the boat that long but I’ve competed in Round the Island Race many times over the last 50 years in various boats I’ve owned.

round-the-island-race-2024-results-04_RIR_NotoriousGoldRomanBowl_JoBowden

“Yesterday was special and the toughest one I’ve done. It’s 40 years ago since I won the Gold Roman Bowl on a little 25ft boat called ‘Odd Job’ which was the smallest boat in the fleet, so this year was very special for me.”

An unsettled early summer in the British Isles provided a real headache for the organisers of the annual Round the Island Race, who woke up to the reality on Saturday of extreme conditions, Race Director, Dave Atkinson said: “This race was a challenge for both the competitors and the Race Team at the Island Sailing Club, with the safety and well-being of the crews being the main priority.

Experience and Poise Lift New York Yacht Club to Third Straight Hinman Masters Trophy

' src=

In the world of competitive sailing, where precision and poise often decide the outcome, 25 short-course races over three days in winds that barely reached 10 knots would test even the most seasoned sailors. Yet, when the stakes were highest on the final day of the Hinman Masters Team Race at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., the key to victory lay not in brute strength or speed but in maintaining composure under pressure.

“When you’re in a situation like that, with everyone finishing at the same time in a crucial race, you really focus on staying calm,” said Brian Doyle, the skipper who led the New York Yacht Club to its third consecutive win. “You just try to keep your boat in the right position, stay within the rules, and cross the line ahead of your rivals. When it’s that close, and everyone’s sprinting to the finish, you never know how it’ll shake out. But we edged it by inches.”

Doyle’s reference points to a nail-biting race between Southern Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club earlier today. With the two teams tied atop the leaderboard after three grueling round robins and entering a mini round robin among the top four teams, every inch mattered. The race saw the lead shift back and forth, with all six boats converging on the finish line simultaneously. Ultimately, it was a battle for fifth place, decided mere feet from the finish, that tipped the scales in favor of New York. The club secured the overall win by splitting its final two races, while Southern Yacht Club, finishing second, stood on the podium for the fifth consecutive year. Eastport Yacht Club claimed third place, and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club finished fourth.

Since its inception in 2000, the Hinman Masters Team Race has become a staple in the evolution of adult team racing, requiring skippers to be at least 45 years old and crew members over 40. This regatta, along with the Morgan Cup and the Grandmasters Team Race, forms the New York Yacht Club’s trio of prestigious team races, drawing top talent from the United States and Europe each August.

To an observer, team racing might seem chaotic, with the cacophony of starts, mark roundings, and finishes in close quarters. However, for the victorious New York Yacht Club team, the path to success was paved by familiarity and understated communication.

“Our team has been together for several years, and we’ve developed a strong bond,” said Doyle. “We anticipate each other’s moves, so there’s not a lot of chatter, just solid boat handling and teamwork that consistently puts us in the right spots. That’s what got us through in the end.”

Doyle’s squad, with six of its 13 sailors having raced together in the previous three Hinman Masters, leaned heavily on their shared experience, especially in the light and variable winds that defined this year’s regatta.

“No lead was safe because as soon as you headed downwind, anything could happen,” Doyle noted. “On the final day, the wind was coming over Goat Island, making it puffy and shifty all the way down. You could be leading at the top mark, but that didn’t guarantee a win.”

With this victory—its ninth in the 25-year history of the event—the New York Yacht Club extended its lead in the regatta’s all-time standings. Southern Yacht Club remains a strong second, with four wins, but this year’s razor-thin margins underscore the growing competitiveness in adult team racing.

“Adult team racing has really blossomed over the 25 years of the Hinman Masters,” Doyle said. “It’s exciting to see more clubs getting involved, especially with fleets of Sonars, which are ideal for team racing. We’ve heard that more clubs are investing in fleets this year, so the future of adult team racing looks bright.”

The New York Yacht Club’s 2024 team racing season will culminate with the Grandmasters Team Race from August 23 to 25, featuring ten teams competing under the leadership of skippers aged 60 and older.

54th Shaw Island Classic Yacht Race Sails Through Varied Conditions

Sunshine, variable winds and channel fog set the stage for the 54th annual Shaw Island Classic yacht race, hosted by the San Juan Island Yacht Club (SJIYC) on August 10. This race is unique in that Shaw Island is the only mark and can be rounded in either direction. It is only a 13-mile course, but shifting winds, variable currents, narrow, rocky channels, and ferry traffic often turn it into a nautical chess game.

“It was a drag race to Wasp Passage,” said Ken Machtley, skipper of Treachery, a Martin 242, and first-place winner in the PHRF-C division and first overall. “Four Orcas Island boats (a Soling 27 and three Martin 242s) and the venerable Wild Rumpus , a Santa Cruz 27, were in a dead heat up San Juan Channel. Wasp Passage provided its normal ‘wind from every direction’ challenges, though the ebb helped to push us along and make quicker work of this tricky section than [in] most years.”

Two-thirds of the fleet of 39 boats took a clockwise course, betting there was enough wind at the start to overcome an ebb current in the San Juan Channel. This course would allow riding the ebb through the notoriously narrow and windless Wasp Passage. That bet paid off with all but one clockwise boat finishing the race. While clockwise dominated, most of the counterclockwise racers also finished, with 36 boats crossing the line before the 6:00 p.m. cutoff.

“It was one of the best sails in recent memory!” said Nigel Oswald, singlehanded skipper of Makika , an F25C trimaran, placing first in the multihull division and first to finish on elapsed time in 2:28:36.

“More wind than expected and we had a close battle with Mist (a Transpac 52) all the way around. The holes were much shorter than normal, just a couple of dead spots for a couple of minutes and the rest of the time we were always moving.”

The clockwise boats made short work of reaching the midway point in Cayou Channel on the northeast side of Shaw Island , where the winds usually turn light and fluky. Still riding the ebb, racers floating past Hankin Point met up with the unusual combination of channel fog and 9- to 12-knot winds.

“We didn’t have the modern navigation aids,” said Michael Durland, skipper of Challenge , a 6-Meter and first-place finisher in the PHRF-B division, “so had to pick a boat ahead of us in the fog who looked like they were headed home and then once we passed them find someone else to tail until the fog lifted and the finish line was in sight. Always a treat to pass up these modern go-fast boats with a 90-year-old classic.”

Thank you to the Washington State Ferry captains of the Samish , Tillikum , Chelan , and Yakima who carefully maneuvered through the racing fleet. A particular shout-out goes to the captain of the Samish , who edged north through the narrow waterway between Flat Point and Canoe Island in Upright Channel, in a bank of fog with the racing fleet beating to windward south.

Spirits were high and spirits were enjoyed as racers once again gathered at the lovely SJIYC clubhouse overlooking the harbor for post-race banter and a hearty lasagna dinner served by the first mates.

“Overall, we had an exceptional day on the water, with enough wind to make it a fast race, spotty fog to add an interesting twist to navigation at times, and a nice-size fleet of exceptional competitors to sail against,” added Ken Machtley.

The Perseverance Award, in honor of Wally Lum, who skippered his Seabird yawl Marquita in the first Shaw and has competed in every race since, goes to the last boat to cross the finish before the deadline. This year’s winner was Nisku , a Crealock 34 skippered by Luis Zappelli. Most winners get a brag flag and an inscription on a perpetual trophy, but the lucky winner of this award gets a bottle of champagne!

Six people missing and one dead after tornado sinks luxury yacht off Sicily

Emergency crews search the coast off the Italian port of Porticello, on August 19, after a tornado sank a luxury yacht nearby. (Igor Petyx/Reuters via CNN Newsource)

(CNN) —  Rescuers were on Monday searching for six people – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – who went missing after a luxury yacht was hit by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, killing one of the 22 people on board.

The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.

Four Britons and two Americans are among those missing, the spokesperson said.

A source told CNN that Lynch, the founder of software giant Autonomy, was a passenger on the yacht. His wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued. The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Fifteen others were rescued from the scene and one child was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office. One body was found on the hull of the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

A small waterspout – one of several types of tornadoes – developed over the area Monday morning, according to a report from the European Severe Weather Database. Other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.

The weather forecast had warned of potential strong winds, with storms across the entire southern region of Italy Sunday, the Coast Guard spokesperson added.

One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, reported Italian news agency ANSA, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The captain is among the survivors, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard said.

The 56-meter yacht called the “Bayesian,” which flies under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one New Zealander, one Irish and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson told CNN.

The Italian fire brigade said its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level, according to a press statement. The brigade also dispatched helicopters to bolster the search operation.

The captain of a nearby boat said he turned on his engine to avoid crashing into the Bayesian, Reuters reported, as fierce gales swept the area.

“This morning we got this strong gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” he told reporters on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.

British tycoon among those missing

Lynch, the British entrepreneur missing from the yacht, had been plagued by legal woes since 2011, when he sold his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion.

In June, he was acquitted of fraud by a jury in San Francisco, after prosecutors accused him of trying to inflate Autonomy’s revenue in the latest chapter of the legal saga.

He turned ground-breaking research at Cambridge University into the foundation of Autonomy, which became Britain’s biggest software company and a member of the blue-chip FTSE 100 index.

Lynch was lauded by academics and scientists and asked to advise the British government on technology and innovation.

Ownership records held by maritime information service Equasis show that the yacht is owned by the Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company. Revtom Limited’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as its owner.
