Ulcaster's ghost

Nilfalasiel.

I'm playing Baldur's Gate for the first time using EasyTutu. I've just cleared the Ulcaster ruins in Chapter 4 and picked up the book that Ulcaster's ghost asked for. However, when I go back up to the surface, the ghost is nowhere to be found. I've seen him milling about while I was clearing the area before going underground, but nothing since I've come back up.

I've looked around for answers and I've seen that other people have run into this problem. I know Ulcaster has an erratic schedule. But I've CTRL+T'ed my way through almost 2 entire days, and he was nowhere to be seen. Not at his usual location and nowhere else in the ruins. I've tried panning the camera around, but I don't hear anything that could indicate his presence. I've rested several times, both inside and outside the ruins, snooped around every corner, the local fauna respawned several times, and he's still not there. I've tried going to other areas and coming back, still no dice. I've even tried to CLUA him in, but the creature code I'm using is either incorrect, or I'm doing something wrong, because it's telling me that the file does not exist.

So I'm at a bit of a loss here. Is this a bug, or could this be caused by a mod conflict? I've installed all my mods using an installation guide I found on this site, so they *should* all have been installed properly and in the correct order, but you never know...

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

He can be found on this map where indicated about 2/3 the time (hours 1, 3-5, 7, 9-10, 12-13, 15, 17-20, 22, 24). If you still have issues, post your WeiDU .log for starters (might also want to look at the area script which is _ar3900.bcs in Tutu).

Yep, that's the place where I've been looking, but still no luck. I've CTRL+T'ed to the hours where he's supposed to appear one more time while standing right next to the spot and nothing.

Here's my WeiDU .log:

That last line and the bunch of "recently uninstalled" stuff at the top is due to my re-running the NPC Kits mod in an attempt to change Khalid's class and realising I hadn't assigned one to Alora. I'm not sure if that could cause problems or not.
As for checking the area script, how would I go about doing that?
You might consider using Level 1 NPCs instead - it's a little more dynamic for assigning kits etc. (and goes toward the end of the install).
Would that mean reinstalling everything...?
Get an editor like Near Infinity or DLTCEP and open up that file (_ar3900.bcs) - copy and paste the contents here.

I'm afraid I'm a bit useless when it comes to technical things...I've installed both of these, but Near Infinity apparently doesn't recognise the file. As for DLTCEP, I can't figure out how to use it to locate the file. Search > Areas seems to be the logical way to go, but I can't make sense of the search options...

:)

joshuar9476

many times when i play we won't be there when exiting the dungeon. The thing i've found that works is to re-enter the dungeon the exit ... try that a couple of times until he's threre

Welp, 'tis a mystery...

I decided to keep a savefile right before exiting the ruins and just carry on with the game on another save. After clearing Gullykin and the Firewine Bridge areas, I decided to stop by Ulcaster on my way back to Beregost to sell some loot, just for a random check.

I did find Ulcaster this time around...Except he wasn't actually *in* the ruins. He'd wandered off all the way to a jutting part of the cliff left of the ruins. If I'd just walked around the ruins as I usually do, I would never have spotted him.

So I thought that maybe he'd been there all along and loaded up my old save to check...but no, he stubbornly stays gone in that one. I CTRL+T'ed a couple of times in that area, just to make sure, and nothing.

So at least, the problem randomly got solved, but I'm still puzzled as to what went wrong in the first place. I was wondering if it may have had something to do with the fact that there are actually 3 copies of the book he asked for? I found 2 more while looting bookshelves in Gullykin, and he accepted all 3 (meaning 3 x 1k Exp for the quest).

Anyway, thanks for the help! (even though I couldn't figure out how to use DLTCEP)

Near Infinity apparently doesn't recognise the file.

No, L1NPCs can go after everything else. It can mod the NPCs that EasyTutuNPCs already kitted (and is a lot more flexible).

Ok, thanks, I'll take a look.

You want to go to Edit > Scripts then Load script and scroll down or search for _ar3900. Make sure you Setup your Tutu game first by pointing to the chitin.key where it's installed (the game type is BG2 / ToB , assuming you have ToB ).

Aha! Not only was I not doing the right procedure, I was also indicating the wrong game type (I disregarded the fact that Tutu also included BG2 / ToB ).

So here's the area script for _ar3900, for curiosity's sake:

Global("CDStartSpawns","FW3900",0)

Hmm...ok, thanks. I guess he wandered off somewhere completely unlikely in that old save then.

Anomaly

In my BGT game, I was completely unable to find the Ulcaster ghost after exiting the School. Even after returning many days after, Ctrl+T'ing for several ingame days, clearing et exploring the area many times. I ended up summoning him again with the CLUA.

It should be possible (in theory) to find out exactly where he is in your save game. Open it with an editor (Near Infinity is probably easiest for this) and decompress the save, then open the .are file (fw3900.are for Tutu) and look for the actor (_ulcast.cre in Tutu). Then note his position and whether he's visible. You can also check his SPRITE_IS_DEADULCASTER global to see if he got killed somehow. Actually you can do that through the console even without an editor with the GetGlobal() command.

Thimblerig

Does anybody know what GLOBAL variable records the completion of the Ulcaster quest?

I keep getting frustrated and wandering off before I can find the ghost to finish it, and the variable would be useful to know for a mod I'm working on...

Never mind - Infinity Explorer is my friend, and there isn't one.

Will post this query + answer in case anyone else, in the fullness of time, wishes to know for their own nefarious purposes.

Sword Coast Stratagems for BG1Tutu / EasyTutu Walkthrough by David Milward

Now I need to say something about my long-term goals. I won't be going to Baldur's Gate right away. At some point, I plan to kill Drizzt for his equipment (I can justify this from a roleplaying perspective even for a good party). This involves a -10 hit to reputation though. So, I'll want to save some areas where increasing reputation is available for after I kill Drizzt. But I also want to go up a level for some characters (Kivan in particular) before I take on Drizzt. Now my path becomes clear. I will explore those areas that don't have quests that increase reputation. My first choice is Ulcaster.

Flooding the Mines

  • Robe of the Evil Archmagi (+5 armor class, +5% magic resistance, +1 to saving throws, evil Mages only) - This will be Edwin's robe for the rest of the game. The good party can't use it, but they can sell it for plenty of gold.
  • Flickering White Ioun Stone (+10% cold resistance) - A welcome addition from BG1 NPC Projects, as I have no use for the Helmet of Infravision with no human characters in the party. Jaheira wears it for the rest of the game.
  • Scroll of Remove Magic - Like dispel magic, except it only effects the enemy. A great spell for when you want to bring down an enemy spellcaster's buffs, but without bringing your own down as well. Imoen scribes it.
  • Scroll of Stoneskin - The second magic buff for Avastrian. Many of my tactics will be based on Avastrian rendering himself invulnerable to physical attacks through a combination of both Stoneskin and Mirror Image.
  • Traveller's Robe
  • Bracers of A.C. 6 - A temporary upgrade for Avastrian.

Now I go around looting the rest of the chests on this level. At some point I find Stephen, and get him to divulge information before letting him go.

Towards the southeast corner is a room with three chests and a Mustard Jelly. The chests themselves will have gold, a Diamond, a Laeral's Tears necklace, and scrolls of Knock and Melf's Acid Arrow.

The chest closest to the shaft that was behind Davaeorn has a Wand of Fear.

I then take the shaft up, and speak to the Miner next to the plug in order to flood the mines. I get a hefty xp bonus, and a +2 to reputation afterwards. *Evil* The evil party didn't free the miners, but lied and allowed them to drown. They take a -2 hit to reputation for that.

I stopped off to sell my booty in Beregost. I now head for Ulcaster. Once there, I casually dispose of Kobolds and Skeletons.

Towards the southwest, a Halfling named Furret tries to pawn a "Gem of True Seeing" on me, but it's worthless and doesn't have any magical powers so I refuse.

Now I journey towards the center of the area, casually killing off more Kobolds and some Hobgoblins as well. There's another distracted messenger named Wilco who won't offer anything that I already don't know.

I conclude the video by bumping the east edge of the area to reveal Gullykin and the Firewine Bridge on the map.

Ulcaster is definitely revved up in SCS, so much so that players should probably avoid coming here with lower-level parties. Here's the first reason why.

As soon as I step up the narrow trail, I get attacked by the undead wraith called Icharyd, who is definitely enhanced in SCS. He hits hard and often, and has a lot of magic resistance. This was true of him during vanilla BG1. In SCS, once I bring him to 'near death' the first time around, he gets a second wind and is restored to full health. His attacks also now cause extra electrical damage. I pretty much will have needed to accumulate a few Potions of Extra Healing to make outlasting him a realistic possibility, as this video shows. He leaves behind a Flail +1.

Ghost of Ulcaster

Now I go west and then north for a bit. I speak with the Ghost of Ulcaster enough times to get a quest to retrieve his history book for him from the dungeon below.

I find the entrance a little to the north and east. There will be a LOT of monsters, like Kobolds and undead, to the east of the entrance, making this a prime opportunity for Imoen to crank out Fireball. The alcove to the north will have some Kobolds as well, but it's impossible to target it with a Fireball without hitting myself as well, so Avastrian falls back on a Sleep spell before going in to kill them.

Ulcaster Dungeon

A lot of the fights in here are quite routine. I go east, and kill an Ochre Jelly and a Mustard Jelly. Behind the Mustard Jelly will be a Chrysoberyl Gem, a Potion of Mirrored Eyes (which I stash for later), and a cursed scroll.

Then I head towards the northwest corner of the dungeon. A corpse has a Potion of Genius and a Dagger +1.

I continue west, and kill several Dire Wolves and Dread Wolves. A room a little east of where I fought the Wolves has several Huge Spiders, which Avastrian puts to Sleep.

I tread carefully when I reach the south portions of the dungeon. Imoen treads forward carefully, and disarms traps along the way. A corpse near the second trap has 3 each of Arrows of Biting and Arrows of Piercing.

I have Yeslick cast Remove Fear on the party, and then they move towards the southeast corner. I end up killing several Dread Wolves. I am careful to keep towards the south part of the room, to avoid bringing the boss of the dungeon into view. Imoen gets another Wand of Fire for her use.

In vanilla BG1 the boss of this dungeon was a Vampiric Wolf. In SCS it's a unique monster, the Wolf of Ulcaster. The Wolf of Ulcaster can paralyze with its physical attacks, like the Vampiric Wolf. But it also has a fear aura that can passively panic multiple party members (hence the Remove Fear earlier).

First I begin my preparations. Avastrian casts Mirror Image on himself, and then Haste on the party. He then coaxes it forward. Jaheira casts Doom on it, while Imoen adds Blindness, and this helps considerably.

Once I bring it to about half of its hit points, it summons several Dread Wolves and Ghouls. This can turn into a really messy situation. Yeslick, however, makes things much easier with a Holy Smite spell that damages only evil creatures within its area of effect. This softens up the Dread Wolves and Ghouls, thus enabling the party to quickly eliminate them and thus robbing the Wolf of Ulcaster of its support. Once the minions are gone I finish off the Wolf.

Imoen then searches the hallway where the Wolf came from, and disarms a trap. A pile of rubble has a few potions, some magical arrows of various sorts, an Oil of Fiery Burning for Khalid, and a the book that the Ghost of Ulcaster wants.

I bring the book back to the Ghost for 1,000xp.

My next destination is the Firewine Bridge .
