Explore the Marino Ballena National Park , home to coral reefs and majestic humpback whales, or venture to the Nicoya Peninsula , where you'll find the stunning beaches of Santa Teresa and Malpaís . Find the ideal boat for your next trip

When planning your nautical adventure in Costa Rica, it is essential to choose the type of boat that best adapts to your needs and the number of people who will travel with you. There is a wide variety of boats to rent, from luxurious yachts to catamarans and sailboats. Take the time to analyze the key features of each type of boat before making a decision.

The capacity of the boat is an important factor to consider, as it influences the comfort and space available on board. If you are traveling with a small group, a sailboat or catamaran may be ideal options. These boats typically have a capacity of 4 to 12 people, allowing for a more intimate and manageable experience. If you're planning a larger getaway, a larger motor yacht or catamaran can offer the space and amenities needed to accommodate groups of up to 20 people or more.

The cabins are another key aspect to take into account, especially if you plan to spend several nights at sea. Depending on the size of the boat and its layout, there can be between 2 and 6 cabins (or even more), each with capacity for 2 people. When planning your boat rental, be sure to choose a boat with enough cabins and beds to accommodate everyone in your group.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Costa Rica?

The price of renting a boat in Costa Rica can vary depending on the season, duration, type of boat, rental port, whether it includes a skipper or not, and extras such as equipment or crew. Below are the approximate rental prices for different types of boats:

  • Boat : ideal for day trips, the Motorboats usually have a smaller capacity and offer great speed to explore the Costa Rican coasts. Boat rental prices in Costa Rica start at approximately €450 per day.
  • Catamaran : Catamarans are double-hulled boats that offer stable and spacious sailing, making them a popular choice for trips of a week or longer. Catamaran rental prices in Costa Rica can start at around €7,000 per week.
  • Sailboat : For a more traditional sailing experience, sailboats are a romantic and adventurous option for those looking to spend a week or more on the high seas. Renting a sailboat in Costa Rica can start from €1,400 per week.
  • Yacht : If you are looking for luxury and comfort, motor yachts offer everything you need for an unforgettable nautical getaway. Yacht charter prices in Costa Rica vary depending on size and amenities, but can start at around €2,900 per day.

Please note that these prices are only estimates and may vary depending on the season and other factors. When planning your Costa Rica boat trip, it is important to do your research and compare prices to ensure you find the option that best suits your needs and budget.

What is included in the price?

When renting a boat in Costa Rica, it is important to understand what is included in the price to avoid surprises and additional expenses. Typically, the rental price includes the use of the boat, basic insurance, and necessary safety equipment. However, other costs, such as fuel, skipper, crew, and water sports equipment, may vary depending on the rental agreement and are not always included in the base price. In many cases, boat charters are offered with an optional skipper, meaning you can choose to sail on your own or hire a professional skipper for an additional cost. Additionally, some boats may include extras like snorkeling or paddle boarding equipment, while others may require you to rent them separately. Be sure to carefully review the rental conditions and ask about any additional costs so you have a clear idea of what is included in the price and plan your trip accordingly.

What is the best season to rent a boat in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has a tropical climate, with ideal conditions for navigation at different times of the year. However, it is important to take climate variations and peak and low seasons into account when planning your boat rental.

  • The dry season , which runs from December to April, is considered the best time to rent a boat in Costa Rica. During these months, the country experiences less rain and warmer temperatures, making it easier to navigate and explore the coasts. Additionally, this period coincides with the Christmas and Easter holidays, making it a popular time for tourism in general.
  • The rainy season , also known as the "green season", runs from May to November. Although rains are more frequent during these months, they are generally short-lived and can allow navigation in reasonable conditions. Some sailors prefer this season due to the lower influx of tourists and the possibility of finding more attractive offers on boat rentals. However, it is important to be aware of weather conditions and take extra precautions when boating during the rainy season.

In terms of festivities and events, Easter and the Christmas and New Year period are times of high demand, which can result in higher rates and lower availability of ships. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and find more competitive prices, the low season (May to November) may be a suitable option.

Where to rent a boat in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has several ports and marinas strategically located along its coasts, ideal for renting a boat and starting your trip. Below are some of the most important marinas in the country:

  • Marina Papagayo : Located on the Papagayo peninsula, in the province of Guanacaste, this luxury marina is located approximately 40 minutes by car from the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport. Marina Papagayo has more than 180 berths and offers a wide range of services and facilities, such as fuel supply, electricity, drinking water, 24/7 security and access to shops and restaurants.
  • Marina Los Sueños : Located in Herradura, near the popular tourist town of Jacó, Marina Los Sueños is approximately 90 minutes drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport. With capacity for more than 200 boats, this marina offers services such as fuel, electricity, drinking water, Internet access and a wide variety of shops, restaurants and hotels in the immediate vicinity.
  • Marina Pez Vela : Located in Quepos, near Manuel Antonio National Park, Marina Pez Vela is approximately 2.5 hours by car from Juan Santamaría International Airport. With the capacity to accommodate around 195 boats, this marina offers facilities and services such as fuel supply, electricity, drinking water, security, shops, restaurants and access to tourist activities in the area.
  • Puerto Limón : Located on the Caribbean coast, Puerto Limón is one of the main ports in the region and is approximately 2.5 hours by car from Juan Santamaría International Airport. Although it is not a marina dedicated exclusively to the rental of pleasure boats, Puerto Limón offers options for renting boats and has basic services such as fuel, electricity and drinking water supply.

These marinas and ports are just some of the options for renting a boat in Costa Rica. Depending on your preferences and travel plans, you can choose the location that best suits your needs and begin your nautical adventure in this incredible tropical destination.

Where to sail in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica offers a wide variety of destinations to sail and discover, with spectacular beaches, hidden coves and unique islands along its Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Here we present some of the most representative places that you should not miss during your boat trip:

  • Papagayo Peninsula : This peninsula in The province of Guanacaste is famous for its luxurious resorts and white sand beaches, such as Playa Blanca and Playa Nacascolo. Sailing along the coast of the Papagayo Peninsula will allow you to enjoy impressive landscapes and crystal clear waters.
  • Bahía Ballena : Located in the province of Puntarenas, Bahía Ballena is home to the Marino Ballena National Park, known for its unique whale tail shape and its excellent opportunities for whale and dolphin watching. Don't miss beaches like Playa Uvita and Playa Hermosa while sailing in this area.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park : This national park, located near Quepos, is one of the most visited protected areas in Costa Rica. It offers spectacular beaches such as Playa Espadilla, Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Biesanz, as well as a great diversity of wildlife and opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

Additionally, you can visit charming beaches such as Playa Montezuma and Playa Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula.
  • Puerto Viejo de Talamanca : This popular tourist destination on the Caribbean coast is known for its golden sand beaches, relaxed atmosphere and colorful Afro-Caribbean culture. Sail along beaches such as Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva to enjoy a tropical landscape and unique experiences in the Costa Rican Caribbean.

These are just some of the incredible destinations that Costa Rica has to offer sailing lovers. Don't hesitate to explore the coasts and discover your own favorite spots in this beautiful tropical country.

Rent a boat with or without skipper

  • With skipper : Renting a boat with a skipper in Costa Rica offers numerous advantages, especially if you do not have sailing experience or do not know the area well. An experienced, local skipper can guide you through the best routes, show you hidden coves and places of interest, and help you plan your itinerary based on your interests and preferences. Furthermore, having a skipper on board allows you to relax and fully enjoy the trip, without worrying about navigation, anchoring or docking in marinas. The skipper can also offer valuable advice on activities and services in the area, as well as guarantee your safety and that of your companions during the journey.
  • Without skipper : If you prefer to rent a boat without a skipper in Costa Rica, it is important to meet certain conditions and requirements. To sail without a skipper, you will need a valid and recognized navigation license in Costa Rica, as well as previous experience operating boats similar to the one you want to rent. It is also crucial to familiarize yourself with local regulations, sailing zones and weather conditions before setting sail. Sailing without a skipper gives you greater freedom and flexibility to explore the Costa Rican coast at your own pace, as well as the opportunity to put your nautical skills into practice. However, it also implies greater responsibility regarding the safety and well-being of all passengers on board, as well as the care and maintenance of the boat during the rental.

Costa Rica Reviews

A wonderful boat! Unfortunately, the day we did our sunset cruise, we were caught in rain for the first half of the time. However, the team did all the could to help make it a wonderful experience. The second half of our time on the boat was met with some clear skies and so many dolphins! Our dolphin sighting really made the trip, it was so peaceful watching them pass by our boat. Thereafter, we were lucky enough to still catch a sunset! Would definitely like to ride with this team again when we're back in costa rica!

Mark

On this same day, you will also take a trip to the world famous Manuel Antonio National Park. This park has a lot of exciting features. You get to explore the jungle to see the beauty of nature at its best. Squirrels, monkeys, three-toed sloths are just a few of so many wonderful creatures to see. If you have never gone on a wildlife tour you may never want to leave the scene. It’s great if you have your camera with you because you will have a lot you want to keep for future references. Day Three We take a luxurious cruise to Isla Del Cano a unique site known for its hidden world of submarine caves with a  display of alluring tropical fish, turtles, etc. one sight you will never forget is the magnanimous giant manta rays. After an exotic lunch on the yacht, we give you a while to spend some quality time to enjoy your siesta or any other form of relaxation you enjoy as we get set for dinner. It’s a wonderful dinner as we dine grand style under a canopy of stars in the immaculate Drake’s Bay.

Day Four Leave early for Golfo Dulce where we will stop for a trip to the Corcovado National Park. Here you will experience some quite spectacular bird watching such as pairs of scarlet macaws. When in the wild you will always find them in pairs and if they are captured and separated, they will never mate again as they always mate for life once they choose their partner. We'll paddle up the Agujitas River by kayak while listening to the cacophony of sounds that the yellow-orange billed toucans and scarlet macaws make. We'll anchor for the night in Golfo Dulce and have an early dinner onboard while the crew prepares for an overnight passage to Coiba Island in Panama. Day Five At Coiba Island, you will have an experience of a swim snorkel or scuba gear as you explore the reefs. You w ill also enjoy world class deep-fishing. Coiba Island is rich with tropical rain forest which is a home for varieties of beautiful birds like the red and blue-green macaws.

Day Six On the sixth day, you will be on a cruise to the Las Perlas Islands. They are geographically positioned in a way that they shelter the Isla Sonora Caves hosting the world largest pelican habitat. It’s a great sight to behold here and you can look around to find pearls of Espiritu Santo. Lunch is served onboard, with a variety of plenty to eat before you have your siesta. After a quality time of rest, you get to enjoy an exotic dinner again. Day Seven Our next tour will be to Mira Flores Lock and the much talked about Panama Canal. It takes about a full day or night to cross over to Isthmus Panama. Get your cameras ready as you may be lucky to catch a view of the endangered manatee which takes the Chagres River as its home. A lot of amazing animals will be seen on this tour, you never can tell what next you will be opportune to see. Dinner is served as you arrive at Puerto Cristobal Habor. The chef and the crew know its’ your last night and they will be prepared to spoil you with varieties of exotic meals. What people are saying, “wouldn’t do a surf trip any other way.”.

Having lived in Costa Rica for more than 3 years I’ve had the opportunity to experience all kinds of tours and this was up there with the best. We did an overnight trip to Witches Rock and some other out of the way surf breaks with Serendipity Charters. Not only is spending the night on the boat great fun, but it puts you in the position to be the first boat on the break when the sun comes up. It felt like we already had a full day of waves before any other boats even showed up. The fully equipped kitchen aboard gave us options beyond the normal surf trip fare, and there was never a time when a snack or beverage was out of reach. On our sail back we were lucky enough to have some wind, so we cut the engines and enjoyed a relaxing sail and some swimming behind the boat. If you are a surfer looking for some world class, uncrowded waves, or a family looking for a great way to experience Costa Rica from the water, I would highly recommend a trip with Cap’n Brad on the Libre.

“First Class Private Sailing, Snorkeling, and Sunset Sail in Flamingo… lifetime experience”

My family and I spent the afternoon out with Serendipity Charters. It was one of the most memorable experiences ever as a family. Granted, the area of coast line, scenery, warm water, and tropical experience go a long way in making any experience amazing and memorable, but what really set it off for us was the level of service and helpfulness on Captain Brad’s boat. Sailing along the coast for an afternoon and watching the sun go down is an amazing experience… and the exclusivity and luxury of this boat and crew make it all the better. Highly recommended!

“One of our best memories of Costa Rica”

The 5 of us were fortunate enough to have chosen to sail order clonazepam canada with Brad on his boat just a couple of days before Christmas. We had a morning sail and Brad took us past some gorgeous beaches, and we stopped at Honeymoon Beach, where we snorkeled around and then explored the beach and rocks and a cave. It was the most beautiful beach we had ever seen! And Costa Rica has a lot of beautiful beaches. Our three teenagers, ages 14, 16 and 18 said that the sailing trip was their favorite thing they did in the 3 weeks we were in Costa Rica. And we did a lot of things! High praises! Brad is a great host and an interesting guy. He listened to what we wanted to do and he made my son’s day when he offered him a second helping of lunch (really good chicken tacos!) I highly recommend sailing with Brad if you want to get away from the crowds and really go sailing. We would definitely do this again! Maybe we will try the sunset cruise! Thanks Brad!

“The highlight of our Costa Rican vacation!”

We recently vacationed in Costa Rica and our day of sailing with Captain Brad was the highlight of our trip! We booked the day so that we could experience ocean sailing and see if it was for us. TestimonialsCaptain Brad was very welcoming and built our day around what we wanted to do all while making sure that we experienced the beauty of the Potrero area. The day exceeded our expectations! We went to some quiet little bays for some snorkeling and swam to a pristine beach to see turtle tracks and howler monkeys. Lunch was prepared by Captain Brad himself who turned out to be a whiz with chicken tacos and snacks. While sailing we even saw a green sea turtle and a few dolphins! Overall we had a fantastic day. It was very easy to book and he offered to arrange transportation and directions as needed. We would highly recommend this if you are in the Playa Potrero or Tamarindo area.

“Best activity of our vacation!”

My wife, son (12), daughter (7) and I took a morning half day cruise with Captain Brad and had a blast! With the help of the crew, Daniel and Eric, my daughter reeled in a 25 lb. jack and was so excited. We stopped in a secluded bay, snorkeled and swam, then climbed back on board for a delicious lunch. While sailing back, a huge manta ray, about 15 feet from wingtip to wingtip, jumped next to the ship. Captain Brad maneuvered the ship so we could observe the ray, then let me jump overboard with a mask and swim with this wonderful creature. It is truly an experience that I won’t forget. We highly recommend this ship and captain!

“Phenomenal Trip”

We experienced an awesome trip aboard this beautiful 50 foot sailboat, it was one of the highlights of our 7 days in Costa Rica. We were fortunate to have a glorious sunshine filled day so our trip was just perfect. Geneva who is Brad’s wife, does the communication for him and she was terrific. She is prompt and helpful and we did everything via e-mail. Our trip was fabulous, the boat is well equipped, more than our day trip needed, but it was just an added luxury. Daniel, the snorkel guide, was great at diving down and forcing the fish out of their hiding spots. Our lunch was delicious, everything was so fresh and tasty. The drinks flowed as well and they were extremely gracious hosts. Thanks Brad, Geneva and Daniel for making this a wonderful experience on a fabulous boat. We all highly recommend this experience.

The country is nestled in Central America between Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the South.

We depart out of the Flamingo Marina, giving our clients the convenience of safe parking and easy accessibility.

Costa Rica in May: Guide to Weather, Where to Go, What to Do

C osta Rica in May is the start of the rainy season throughout most of the country. It is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know as you plan your trip.

Thomas and I created this post to detail the pros and cons of May in Costa Rica. We have lived in Costa Rica since 2016, so we are somewhat experts on the weather you can expect each month of the year. We also included tips on what to pack, the best areas to visit, and the pros and cons of this time of year.

So, let’s get to all the tips to make sure you have an amazing experience while visiting Costa Rica during the month of May.

Costa Rica in May at a Glance

  • This is a transition month between the end of dry season and the start of rainy season. Weather will be hot and sunny with occasional afternoon rain showers on the Pacific Coast.
  • Typically tourism starts to go down a bit at this time of year. That means prices also get a bit lower.
  • Focus on sun-blocking clothing, high SPF sunscreen, bug spray, rain protection, and lots of water for hydration. This time of year is humid!

Should You Travel to Costa Rica in May?

We say definitely! It’s actually one of the best months of the year to visit Costa Rica (in our opinion).

Pros of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • The weather should be good. We go into the weather details further in this post, but in general, you can expect perfectly sunny days, afternoon rain storms, and warm evenings.
  • Everything will be open at this time. Sometimes later in the year tour companies and hotels close because there are just not enough tourists for there to be a reason to stay open.
  • Everything starts turning green again after the dry season, and it is so beautiful!
  • There are still a lot of tourists, but it is not as busy as peak high season ( January – April).
  • You can expect what is referred to as “mid-season prices”. That means rates aren’t as high as in peak season, but not as low as later in the year when the chance of rain is higher.
  • Hotels, activities etc, aren’t as full.
  • Wildlife can be more active because the temperatures cool down a bit. It’s a great time to visit national parks !

Cons of Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • This is the beginning of the green season and you may have to contend with afternoon rain.
  • Rates go down a bit, but not as much as later in the year
  • The mosquitoes tend to be worse in the rainy season versus dry season

Costa Rica Weather in May

May is the start of the rainy season in many parts of Costa Rica, which means you can expect some wet weather during your visit.

The weather can vary significantly depending on where you are in the country.

The sun rises daily around 5:15 am and sets around 5:50 pm.

One thing to keep in mind is that the weather forecast online is never correct during the rainy season. They typically predict rain showers all day long. This is luckily all lies.

Pacific Coast

On the Pacific Coast, we suggest getting up as early as possible. Usually, you won’t really be able to sleep in anyway because the however monkeys and other loud wildlife will make sure you are up early.

In our opinion, the early morning hours are the very best time of the day. It’s beautiful!

You can expect hot days (mid 80’s Fahrenheit) with plenty of sunshine until the early afternoon.

Around 2pm the afternoon rain storms usually roll in. These storms typically last for an hour or two. This is a great time to take a little siesta.

After that, the weather tends to cool off a bit. But, “cools off” is a relative term. Really, it typically gets down to the mid to high seventies Fahrenheit.

The evenings tend to be clear with nice sunset views.

After sunset, you will need bug spray.

On the northern Pacific Coast in the Guanacaste Province , you can expect even less rain. Typically this area tends to stay dry a bit longer.

San Jose & Central Valley

San Jose and the Central Valley area is always bit cooler than the Pacific Coast.

The average daytime temperatures range from around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C), while nighttime temperatures usually drop to around 60°F to 65°F (16°C to 18°C).

Just note that temperatures can vary depending on the specific location within the Central Valley. Higher elevation areas tend to be cooler.

Northern Mountains

The Northern Mountains region consists of La Fortuna and Monteverde.

The days should be clear enough that you will be able to enjoy good views in mountain towns. For example, Arenal Volcano should be mostly clear for viewing.

In Monteverde , you may have more rain. Usually, it is not super heavy, but the rain can occur more throughout the day and tends not to be limited to only the afternoons.

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean Coast has the opposite rainy and dry season the Pacific Coast. May in the Caribbean can mean heavier rains. In our experience, usually, it rains more in the evening than during the day, but you never know.

Average highs range from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C) and lows from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C).

What to Pack for Costa Rica in May

In May, layers are also a good idea because it can get cool in the evenings after the daily rain.

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing (shorts, T-shirts, tank tops). We suggest opting for moisture-wicking clothing that also blocks UV rays.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants for cooler evenings and sun protection
  • Swimsuits for beach and water activities
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for exploring
  • Rain jacket for occasional showers during the transition to the rainy season
  • Sunglasses for sun protection

Weather-Specific Items:

  • Sunscreen (high SPF) for sun protection in the tropical climate
  • Insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes, especially during evenings
  • Daypack for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions. I suggest a dry bag.
  • Plastic bags or waterproof pouches for protecting electronics and important documents from rain

Outdoor and Adventure Gear:

  • Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes for exploring natural trails. We like Keens .
  • Pocket binoculars for wildlife viewing, especially in national parks
  • Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during outdoor activities. I suggest LifeStraw bottles .
  • A glasses strap to keep your sunglasses secure during adventures like zip lining and boat trips
  • Quick-dry microfiber travel towel for convenience on the go

Electronics and Accessories:

  • Camera or smartphone for capturing the stunning landscapes and wildlife
  • Portable charger to keep devices powered during outdoor excursions

Health and Safety:

  • Travel first aid kit with basic medications, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions
  • Motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive to travel on winding roads or if you plan to take boat trips
  • Hydration tablets or electrolyte supplements for staying hydrated in the warm weather
  • Hat with a wide brim for added sun protection, especially during outdoor activities

Miscellaneous Items:

  • Copies of important documents (passport, travel insurance, itinerary)
  • Zip lock bags to separate wet items in your luggage

Check out our complete packing list for women and packing list for men for more ideas of what to bring.

The Best Places to Visit and Places to Avoid

There is nowhere I would suggest completely avoiding. You will likely have more rain on the Caribbean Coast, but it is a beautiful area to visit.

As always, you can expect more tourists in the bigger towns (La Fortuna, Monteverde, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Jaco, Manuel Antonio) but it shouldn’t be too crazy.

Things to Do at this Time of Year

This is a great time of year for pretty much all activities. When booking your Costa Rica tours, keep in mind that there may be afternoon storms. We like to try and schedule as much as we can in the morning to avoid the possibility of being rained out.

Some of our favorite activities are:

  • Visit a Waterfall : The water levels will be a bit higher than during the dry season, so you can enjoy a better experience.
  • Go Hiking in a National Park : We love it when everything turns lush and green again. Plus, with fewer crowds, the national parks are super enjoyable. This is a great time to go to Corcovado National Park or Manuel Antonio National Park .
  • Go Zip Lining : Again, with everything starting to turn green and vibrant in May it is a great time to get overhead views of the jungle canopy with a zip-lining adventure. We suggest this activity in Monteverde or La Fortuna .
  • Take a Catamaran Sunset Tour : This is a fun activity to do after the brief afternoon rain shower. A catamaran tour typically includes a fun time out on a nice boat, Usually, these tours are a bit cheaper than in the high season.
  • Visit the Beautiful Beaches : It is always a good time to visit the amazing beaches. All beaches in Costa Rica need to have free public access by law. That means there is thousands of miles of coastline for you to explore.

Booking Transportation

Typically, we think renting a car is the best way to easily get around.

In May, demand isn’t as high, but it is still best to book somewhat early because things can still book out.

Adobe Rent-a-Car

  • 10% discount for Costa Rica Vibes readers
  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

Some other transportation options you might consider are:

  • Book a shared shuttle on BookAway
  • Book a private shuttle with Adobe Transfers

Booking Hotels

We like to use Booking.com and reserve places with free cancellations up to a certain date. This will give you the most flexibility if your plans change or if you find a better option. Just make sure to remember to cancel in time!

We also really like VRBO for booking villas or houses. Again, we suggest filtering by places that allow free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans possibly changing.

When booking a place make sure it has AC. sometimes you might be fine with just an electric fan, but we have definitely learned to give preference to places with AC because the evenings can stay semi-warm.

Holidays and Festivals

There is one Costa Rican national holiday in May.

Labor Day : May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day in Costa Rica, and it is a public holiday. Many businesses and shops are closed, and there are often parades and demonstrations in the major cities.

Another fun festival is, Día de San Isidro Labrador on On May 15th. This event is observed in various towns near San Jose such as San Isidro de Heredia, Perez Zeledon, and Atenas.

This festivity pays homage to the patron saint of farming. It features vibrant parades, traditional cuisine, and a ceremonial blessing of the crops.

Our Travel Tips for Visiting Costa Rica in May

  • Check out flying into both the San Jose and Liberia Airport for your trip to Costa Rica in May. More and more flights are flying into Liberia Airport and sometimes you might find great deals. We like San Jose Airport because it is very centrally located, but Liberia is a lot less hectic and great if you are planning to visit the Guanacaste Province or Northern Mountain region.
  • If you need more info, we have a complete guide to Costa Rica weather with more details of what to expect in every month.
  • Don’t forget travel insurance. Since we suggest booking everything as early as possible. It is always good to have travel insurance if your travel plans change.

In conclusion, May is a great month to visit Costa Rica for a fun and unique experience. Get ready for sunny days, afternoon rains, and lush landscapes!

While May is part of the rainy season, don’t let the occasional showers dampen your spirits. Just remember to pack lightweight rain gear, insect repellent, and you’ll have an amazing experience!
