Endeavour was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith to challenge for the America’s Cup in 1934. Having prepared his campaign in Shamrock V, Sopwith was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day. From launching in 1934 she continued her preparation by competing against Shamrock V (then owned by Sir Richard Fairey) and the newly launched Velsheda (owned by W.L Stephenson).

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen the World around, winning many races in her first season. Like many before her, Endeavour did not win the Cup but she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Endeavour pioneered the development of the Quadrilateral genoa, a two clewed headsail offering immense sail area and power, and still used on J Class yachts racing today. She also had a larger and better designed spinnaker but Sopwith was let down by poor crewing. Just prior to departure for the  USA , his professional crew went on strike for more money and Sopwith was forced to round up keen amateur sailors, who had the enthusiasm but not the experience. Afterwards, she returned to England to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up prior to the war.

Over the next 46 years, Endeavour passed through many hands, her fate often hanging by a thread. Among other indignities, she was sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In the seventies, she sank in the Medina River in Cowes. Again at the eleventh hour, she was bought for ten pounds sterling by two carpenters who patched the holes in her hull with plastic bags and got her afloat again. In the early eighties, Endeavour sat at Calshot Spit, an abandoned seaplane base fronting the Solent. She was a complete wreck, a rusting and forlorn hulk with no keel, rudder, ballast or interior.

The Rebuild

In 1984 American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought Endeavour and undertook a five year rebuild. Since the hull was too fragile to be moved and was miles away from any boatyard, Meyer had a building constructed over the boat and hired welders to restore the hull. Endeavour’s missing keel and ballast were rebuilt, the steel frames and hull plating repaired and replaced where necessary, and a new rudder fabricated.

The newly seaworthy hull was launched and towed to Holland where it was put on a barge and transported to the Royal Huisman in Vollenhove. There she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman’s Huisfit division in 1989 into a modern masterpeice, with all new deck, rig, sailing gear and interior.

Endeavour sailed again, on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years.

The incomparable Endeavour was the first of the J Class yachts to be restored to her old glory and thus will always claim a special place in the hearts of the shipyard workers and yachtsmen everywhere.

The latest refit was completed in 2011 at Yachting Developments, Hobsonville, Auckland NZ.

In May 2013, the refit work was recognised when JK4 Endeavour won the Refitted Sailing Yacht Award at the 2013 Superyacht Awards.

endeavour 1934 yacht

Endeavour was designed for the 1934 America’s Cup by Charles E Nicholson and built at Camper & Nicholson’s in Gosport for Sir Thomas Sopwith. Along with Shamrock, Endeavour is one of the two remaining J Class yachts which actually raced for the America’s Cup. Indeed she came closer to winning the Cup than any other Challenger. Against Harold S Vanderbilt’s Rainbow, Endeavour won the first two races and was considered to be the faster boat. With better tactics Rainbow then took wins in Races 3 and 4. Sopwith protested against one contentious manoeuvre but lost and Rainbow went on to win 4-2. At home, one headline read, “ Britannia rules the waves and America waives the rules ."

After the Cup she raced successfully in England but was partially wrecked in 1937 after breaking a tow. Since then she has had numerous owners, refits and repairs.

Endeavour was fully restored by Elizabeth L. Meyer over five years at Royal Huisman and this initiative, and her restoration of Shamrock, stimulated renewed interest in restoring and building replica J Class yachts.

Endeavour was relaunched on the 22nd June 1989 following a refit with Dykstra Naval Architects and sailed for the first time in 52 years. Meyer organised the first J Class racing that September when Endeavour raced Shamrock V in Newport RI.

She had a major refit in 2010/11 with modifications by Dykstra Naval Architects with a new sail plan and deck layout, the work carried out by Yachting Developments in Auckland, New Zealand. That refit included a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior. Fresh from refit Endeavour proved she has performance potential, winning the 2012 Saint Barths Bucket against Shamrock V and Velsheda.

Sailing yacht Endeavour, built in 1934 by UK shipyard Camper and Nicholsons, is a genuine piece of yachting history. With a steel hull and wood superstructure, her naval architects are Charles E Nicholson and Dykstra & Partners, while she features exterior design by Charles E Nicholson, and the interior work of John Munford. This classic vessel measures 39.56 metres and can accommodate up to eight guests.

A comprehensive refit in 2011 includes removal and replacement of the complete weather deck including all deck equipment. Steel deck framing has also been relocated to accommodate the new load paths of the new deck layout. Luxury sailing yacht Endeavour was originally commissioned by British airplane magnate Sir Tom Sopwith for the America’s Cup, possibly the greatest of all sailing races. Sopwith was keen to make his yacht the most advanced model possible, applying aviation technology to the vessel’s rig and winches.

With a rich and successful history, the yacht dominated the British race scene for several years and even today is considered to be on of the most beautiful J class classic yachts ever constructed. Her dark blue hull and over 2740 square metres of sail make her easily identifiable.

Endeavour was bought in 1984 by American Elizabeth Meyer who proceeded to spend five years rebuilding the classic vessel. Too large to move, restoration began at the Calshot Spit World War II seaplane base in Southampton.

The rebuild involved replacing the keel and ballast, repairing her frames and hull and adding a new rudder. Full restoration took place once the yacht was transported to the Royal Huisman shipyard in the Netherlands and she received a new engine, generators and mechanical systems. After her long period on land, Endeavour was ready to sail again in June 1989.

Since her re-launch, she has cruised the waters of the Mediterranean, Europe, Caribbean, and the Americas. Previously owned by former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, she was sold to Sempervirens Ltd. in 2006.

Although she still carries the lines and workmanship of her original design, the sailing yacht is every inch the modern superyacht with her aluminium mast and boom, hydraulic winches, bow thrusters, water-maker and advanced navigation and entertainment equipment.

Below her decks, Luxury sailing yacht Endeavour is panelled in American cherry, bevelled glass, nickel and platinum plated fixtures while her furnishings are a mix of wool, cotton and silk fabrics. Athena includes a full audio visual entertainments system and a large CD and movie library among her list of amenities.

Amongst her four cabins are an indulgent King berth; two Queen rooms; and a twin cabin. Each features an en suite with heated towel racks, while the master suite also houses an over-sized bath tub.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Endeavour is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at nine knots while her crew of eight ensure the needs of every guest are met.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an armada of water toys to provide endless entertainment during any yacht charter. Onboard can be found an inflatable dinghy, windsurfers, a dive compressor, and a range of scuba and snorkelling gear.

The J Class yacht Endeavour is for sale – a rare chance to buy one of the most iconic yachts ever built

  • Toby Hodges
  • February 3, 2016

The J Class Endeavour, Britain’s worthiest America’s Cup challenger to date and often described as the most beautiful J Class ever, is still on the market

Arguably there couldn’t be at a better time to buy one of the most prestigious yachts ever. In recent years the J Class has enjoyed a complete resurgence ( see our J Class guide here ). The result makes for mesmerising viewing, as these most elegant, timeless classics are raced by the world’s best and regularly finish within seconds of each other. It’s like one-design racing for museum pieces.

We had the chance to sail Endeavour in December 2016 – and get this EXCLUSIVE VIDEO FOOTAGE

J-Class Endeavour

The J-Class Endeavour powers to windward at the 2012 St Barths Bucket

We have only seen Endeavour race competitively once in the last decade. It was fresh after her 18-month refit at Yachting Developments in New Zealand, when she stole the show at the St Barths Bucket in 2012. This showed the potential of the yacht with famous sail number JK4 in the modern fleet of carbon-rigged Js. Since then however, little has been seen of Endeavour as her owner favoured private cruising.

The J Class wave shows no sign of slowing however. There are more Js competing now than ever before. The Hoek-reconfigured J Class Topaz (J8) launched from Holland Jachtbouw in spring 2015 and Svea followed two years later.

The J Class yacht Endeaour

The J Class yacht Endeavour arguably remains the jewel of the fleet.  She is the yacht that has come closest to winning the America’s Cup for Britain. Her story reflects the history of the J Class and has helped shape the modern fleet we know today.

Endeavour was designed by C.E. Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in steel in 1934 for aircraft manufacturer Sir T.O.M Sopwith. She was the only J to beat the original Rainbow and considered the most dangerous British challenger to the cup ever. On launching, Endeavour was declared ‘the perfect boat’ by someone that really knew his shapes, Nat Herreshoff.

J-Class Endeavour

The J-Class Endeavour in 1934, racing King George V’s Brittania

Sopwith took a scientific approach using his aeronautical experience, and the innovations lavished on Endeavour included the likes of four-speed winches, the first windvane linked to a dial by the helm, and a four sided jib with two clews and sheets, dubbed a ‘quad’.

Following a crew strike over pay, Sopwith replaced the 13 pro sailors with amateurs shortly before leaving for the America’s Cup in the states. This, together with taking off more and more ballast during the series, was largely seen as his undoing.

J-Class Endeavour

The J-Class Endeavour after decades in a mudberth

Endeavour sat in her Solent mudberth for three decades following the war, in the hands of a variety of owners. She was once saved from scrap and even sank in the Medina River in the seventies.

Beken’s picture shows the state she reached, a wreck with no rig, keel or interior. But it was when Elizabeth Meyer bought her in 1984, that her resurgence, and in time, that of the J Class, really began. Meyer had Endeavour re-configured by Dykstra Naval Architects, shipped to Royal Huisman and fully restored, before cruising and racing her all around the world.

J-Class Endeavour

J-Class Endeavour’s interior today, styled by John Munford

Endeavour underwent an extensive refit again in 2010/11 at Yachting Developments in New Zealand.  Dykstra Naval Architects was responsible for the construction, sail plan and deck layout, and Jon Barret, who oversaw the yacht’s first refit as captain at Royal Huisman in 1989, project managed the refit.

The work involved the removal of 40T of material, including 14 deck winches. The remaining winches, hydraulics, electrics, engine and generators were all replaced over 100,000 man-hours. Endeavour left New Zealand with a new deck structure, new rig and sails, a new deck layout, an engine room upgrade and a new crew interior.

Her €17.5m asking price today is perhaps typical for a J Class. But to become a custodian of a cruise and race ready Endeavour, and at such an exciting time, would be priceless.

today a huge box came in. When the rigging of my Pickle is done I‘ll start with the America‘s Cup yacht Endeavour.

The 1/35 scale kit includes laser cutted parts for the deck, keel and frames, limewood and mahogany planking material, brass and wooden fittings, photo etched brass details, cloth, plans, instructions in three languages (Italian, French and English).

Endeavour is a 130-foot (40 m) J-class yacht built for the 1934 America's Cup by Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, Portsmouth Harbour, England. She was built for Sir Thomas Sopwith who used his aviation design expertise to ensure the yacht was the most advanced of its day with a steel hull and mast. She was launched in 1934 and won many races in her first season including against the J's Velsheda and Shamrock V. She failed in her America's Cup challenge against the American defender Rainbow but came closer to lifting the cup than any other until Australia II succeeded in 1983.

The Amati kit is really impressive. The wooden parts are of good quality, only the sails are not sewn. Anyway, I can‘t wait laying the keel.

Richard - I just found your log. She is a beautiful ship. I too have this kit on my shelf. I concern is what will the admiral say when she sees how bit it is?!! Did you notice the mast alone is nearly 5 ft tall. this is not likely to fit in a display case.

Wow is that a full size ironing board? This is going to be a huge replica. What's her overall length (and height), my calculations give just under 4 feet long? She should make one really impressive display. I also love seeing the non-period and working vessel builds. There are so many interesting vessels out there and this one is a definite keeper.

@ Yves, Nice photo, it really shows the inner beauty of the sail stitching.

When she raced in the Cup she had a crew of 35! Can you imagine being the bow man on that thing?!! She is in the Caribbean now. Her new owner spent over $1M to restore her. I would love a chance to sail on board. Every year there is a classic wooden boat race in the Carib.

Did you know you can R/C this model? Just saying...
Wow is that a full size ironing board?

To water proof the hull on this kit all you need is a layer of West systems Epoxy. And the electronics is not hard either. am I tempting you? Hmmm?

Actually the biggest challenge would be the ballasting.

Really looking forward to your progress on this as the smaller 1:80 version is high on my list.

Hi Richard:

No sooner is the Pickle done than this beauty emerges off the shelf?!?! I looked long and hard at this kit during my annual "kit acquisition season" but the size put me off - the Admiral does want to move to a bigger place, but I'm not sure this is the reason she had in mind!!

Looking forward to following this one

Hi Richard,

You are off to a great start keep the please pictures coming

Looking at your pictures again, some of the small ribs seem to be shy of the keel whilst a couple of the larger ones are proud. Looking forward to see how you deal with this!

Thank you very much Floyd, Tim, Q A‘s Revenge, Hamilton and Jeff.

Oh boy I am so going to be getting into trouble with the Admiral.   I might just have to dig my kit out. Are going to have the drop keel exposed?

post-443-0-78256700-1381657937_thumb.jpg

but the size put me off -

Well, the length is a minor problem. The real problem is the height of the mast. For all I know, Amati‘s Endeavour is available in three different sizes: 1:80, 1:50 and 1:35.

  • yvesvidal and hamilton
I‘m not sure about an exposed drop keel. I think, it looks strange. But the drop keel is free to move.

This is the little one that's on my list. It's available as resin hull or plank on frame. Which one I buy depends on how easy you make the hull planking look!

http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/acatalog/Endeavour-314-ext.html

I think the drop keel looks strange in the present context but might look more appropriate when the hull is fully planked - a matter of taste I suppose. Anyway, it will be nice to see one of these beautiful hulls in a nice large format, drop keel or not!

I agree with you all about the retractable keel. I would not show it on the finished model, although it would be cool to have some kind of mechanism (spring or others) that allows you to pull it out, with automatic retraction inside the hull. This could be a nice feature on a static model.

The lines of the hull are so pure that the lower keel would break the incredible beauty of the J class.

As for the height of the mast, unless you place the model on the floor, you will need a ladder to work on the top of it. I cannot wait to see more progress and pictures.

If you were to R/C this boat you could have a 3rd channel for the drop keel. It would help you when pointing upwind.

looks good, I have always liked Americas Cup boats , Do they make kits for the modern 12 meter Boats ? ( Ive been looking and have not found any other than plastic ones) thought about buying plans and doing a scatch build, I saw some model plans for the America3 boats (just to new of a boat)

For LVMH, the Olympics Are Welcome, but Not Without Risk

The reaction to the conglomerate’s involvement in the Games has been relatively — and surprisingly — free of criticism, yet the stakes are high.

  • Share full article

An image looking up at the Eiffel Tower with the Olympic rings displayed

By Claire Moses

Reporting from Paris

Among the dozens of sponsors of this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, one will be by far the most visible and influential: LVMH, the French luxury goods conglomerate. The company has invested 150 million euros ($163 million) in the 2024 Olympic Games, a gamble for a brand that has long marketed its goods to the upper echelons of society. And the company isn’t just putting its name on the event. It is putting its products … well, pretty much everywhere.

Louis Vuitton created the trunk that carries the Olympic torch and the medal trays for the victory ceremonies. Various other LVMH companies are involved as well. The jeweler Chaumet designed the medals, all of which will include a piece of wrought iron from the Eiffel Tower . Berluti, together with the French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, designed the outfits the French team will wear during the opening ceremony. And Louis Vuitton and Sephora are in charge of the Olympic torch relay, which started on May 8 in Marseille and ends on July 26 in Paris, when the Games begin.

“This is the biggest event of our life in terms of commitment,” Antoine Arnault, who is in charge of image and environment at LVMH, said at a conference about sports and fashion organized by The New York Times in Paris this month. Mr. Arnault is the chairman of Loro Piana and the oldest son of Bernard Arnault, the chairman and chief executive of LVMH.

“We decided not just to sign a check,” Mr. Arnault said. “We decided that if we were going to do it, it was going to be new. It was going to be something that was never seen before.”

But becoming not just a sponsor but what the company calls the “creative partner” in the 2024 Olympics, and turning what is seen as a national showcase into a luxury advertisement, comes with risks.

LVMH will be highly visible during the opening ceremony, a four-and-a-half hour event that will be watched by 1.5 billion people around the world and that Mr. Arnault described as “very visibly LVMH-created.” The official Olympic Games website promises that it will be “bold, original and unique.”

A lot rests on those four-and-a-half hours, he said, citing potential hiccups beyond his control — a security incident, a strike or bad weather — that could derail the ceremony.

“This is a big risk for us,” Mr. Arnault said. “It needs to go perfectly for us to feel good about our commitment to these games. If the ceremony fails, it’s not going to be a very good night for us.”

Looking back at the negotiations leading up to the sponsorship announcement in 2023 and the unique way in which LVMH is putting its stamp on the games, Mr. Arnault said that the decision to participate became “obvious” and that it had been received well internally and externally.

“We were never proactively thinking of being the main sponsor,” he said at the Times conference. But after another major sponsor withdrew, “it suddenly became possible” he said, for the company to have a seat at the table and to have real influence on the Games.

“As a sports fan, as an Olympic Games viewer and passionate about this world, I thought it was essential and obvious for us to carry that role as the leading luxury group in France,” Mr. Arnault said.

LVMH has strengthened its relationship with the world of sports in other ways in anticipation of the Olympics. This year, for the first time since 2017, Louis Vuitton is sponsoring the America’s Cup , the world’s most prestigious sailing yacht competition.

Yet as LVMH becomes an increasingly visible part of the French economy and the Parisian streetscape, it has become — inevitably, it seems — a target of criticism. In April 2023, for example, demonstrators who were protesting plans to raise France’s retirement age, forced their way into the company headquarters on Avenue Montaigne.

LVMH, as well as its chief executive, faced criticism when it promised to invest $226 million in the restoration of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame after it was engulfed by flames in 2019 . There were people who criticized the wealthy donors for not paying their fair share in taxes, depriving the French government of revenue to repair the cathedral. Others criticized the reputational boost bestowed on philanthropists during a time of tragedy.

“There’s always a lot of criticism around anything we do,” Mr. Arnault said. “It’s almost a part of the French way of life.” But, surprisingly, there has been less criticism than might have been expected on the company’s involvement in the Olympic Games, he said.

The Olympics, too, are not without criticism, especially from Parisians who are finding their city much harder to live in this summer because of traffic and increased security. Other challenges abound as well. As of June, the Seine remained too dirty for open-water swimming events. Officials said that because of unusually heavy rain, sewage water had ended up in the river.

In a show of discontent, some locals threatened to use the river as a public toilet on the original day that Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, planned to swim in the Seine to prove the water was clean. Protesters used the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which, though it may sound better in French, urged people to defecate in the river. (The protest did not appear to materialize, but the mayor did take a dip in the Seine this month .)

As LVMH continues to engage in major sporting events, it is not unreasonable to assume that it has its sights on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Mr. Arnault was wary of making any statements before this year’s games had even begun.
