New Northern Marine 57 with 5,000-Mile Range

' src=

Northern Marine has just launched its latest 57 pilothouse long-range expedition yacht, designed for an owner-operator to cruise anywhere in the world.

Stuart Archer, the general manager of Northern Marine in Anacortes, Washington, wrote me that the 57, powered by a single 325-hp John Deere, has a range of 5,000 nm at 8.75 knots. The boat holds 2,600 gallons of fuel and burns 4.2 gph at that speed. Top speed is over 10 knots.

Northern Marine has a rich heritage of making commercial fishing boats, working trawlers and long-range expedition yachts. It was bought by Seattle Yachts in 2019, with a fleet now going from the 57 up to 100 feet.

The new 57 is the sixth hull in that line, and it has a two-stateroom, three-head layout, with an additional sleeping area in the settee in the pilothouse. Built for global travel, the 57 has two 17kW generators. An emergency get-home drive powered by one of them will deliver a 5-knot speed. The boat also has bow and stern thrusters.

The large engine room provides easy access to the machinery and also houses a sea-chest, replacing a series of through-hull fittings, to provide water throughout the boat. The sea-chest has a clear Lexan cover on top, above the waterline, for easy inspection and cleaning.

Two overhead cameras monitor all the gauges and systems in the engine room. The fuel filters are mounted above deck on the starboard side for an easy change underway.

The yacht’s aft deck is full width and protected by the overhang from the boat deck. It has a sink and fridge. A weather-tight door leads to the salon, with an L-shaped lounge to starboard, twin chairs and a high-gloss table to port. A flat-screen TV between the chairs can be raised on a power lift to face the galley with a white quartz stone countertop. Extra-large side windows let in lots of natural light.

The gourmet galley is up a step from the salon, and is equipped for a long cruise, with a trash compactor, dishwasher, fridge and other appliances, all with walnut veneer panels. A large pantry is on the port side.

Up two steps, the pilothouse has a four-person, L-shaped settee and a table that convert to a double berth behind the Stidd helm chair. Five fixed windows in front are at a reverse angle to reduce glare and shed water. An on-deck head is on the port side, just aft of a watertight door leading up to the flybridge.

Up top, the flybridge has two Stidd helm chairs, an ice-maker, fridge/freezer, sink and barbeque and unobstructed views forward. The flybridge is protected by a hardtop. The boat deck aft has a 1,500-pound hydraulic Steelhead crane.

The master stateroom is on the main deck under the pilothouse, with a centerline king-sized bed and large en suite head. You reach the guest stateroom via a separate stairway from the pilothouse. It has a walk-around queen bed and an en suite head.

Specs.: LOA: 57’0”; Beam: 17’6”; Draft: 5’10”; Disp.: 135,000 lbs.; Fuel: 2,600 gals.; Water: 420 gals.; Power: 1×325-hp John Deere. Read more:

Northern Marine 57

northern marine 70 expedition yacht

If your nautical fantasies include nudging an iceberg to gather thousand-year-old ice for your drinks, pushing up a steamy jungle river or traversing the expanses of sea between those destinations, then the Northern Marine 57 may be the yacht of your dreams.

She’s an honest and serious expedition trawler for a husband-and-wife team. The word “honest crops up regularly when discussing this yacht. Unlike many of the faux expedition yachts attempting to capitalize on the market for adventure travel, the 5700 Series Expedition Trawlers are the real thing. From the bulbous bow to the array of antennas on the radar mast, everything aboard this yacht is done to make her rugged, seaworthy and easy to maintain. There are no styling touches, no gewgaws and no frills.

At a garden party of pretty white yachts, the Northern Marine 57 would be the one with the 101st Airborne Division tattoo on its arm and its T-shirt sleeves rolled up. The rugged exterior, however, doesn’t mean you’ll be camping out. The interior is fitted with all the amenities that make sense on a yacht such as this-sophisticated electronics, entertainment systems and the latest appliances. You won’t find suede headliners or blown-glass chandeliers aboard a 57, but that is not because Northern Marine is incapable of such flash. Clients who make the trek to the Northern Marine plant in Anacortes, Washington, want a serious voyaging yacht, not a Las Vegas penthouse.

The sort of yachtsman who appreciates a Northern Marine 57 is one who knows that there are two kinds of yachtsmen: those who have run aground, and those who are about to. For that reason, each 57 gets a steel shoe on the bottom of the full-length keel. It’s a husky 11/2 inches of reassuring protection when the 100-year-old charts in some remote destination prove to be hopeful rather than accurate.

Because this 57 may also bump into things harder than ice, the stem band that stretches from the trademark Northern Marine breastplate to the bulbous bow is a 21/2-inch prop shaft cut in half. Even the rub rails are solid 11/2-inch stainless steel.

Northern Marine has become synonymous with rugged offshore yachts, though the company’s reputation was built in just a few years. The first trawler from Northern Marine was Spirit of Zopilote, a replacement for the 70-foot Zopilote, a Delta-built yacht that achieved celebrity status among cruising yachtsmen for her globe-ranging voyages. The company made headlines again when it built the 76-foot Starship, which served as the mothership for a documentary film crew on a 76,000-mile three-year circumnavigation and is now owned by actor Gene Hackman.

Despite the molded composite hulls, previous yachts in Northern Marine’s 75- and 80-foot series have been essentially custom yachts. The 57 is designed to offer production savings while remaining semi-custom.

Raven , the Northern Marine 57 photographed for this article, is clearly intended for voyaging. Still rounded like her larger sisters, the 57’s hull is flattened aft and has slightly more rocker for stability down sea and in turns, while the sturdy keel has a more streamlined shape. According to the builder, attention to fairing results in an 11-knot top speed and a comfortable cruising speed of 9.5 knots at just six gallons per hour.

The saloon on Raven is paneled in mahogany finished with tung oil for a pleasant look that requires little maintenance. Comfortable is a word that comes to mind. There are panoramic views through the large windows. To simplify service in faraway ports, household appliances complete the galley. A flat-screen TV swings down from the overhead to conserve space in the saloon.

Staggered accommodations and the bluff bow give the 57 some ups and downs that can be off-putting at first, but she offers complete privacy for two couples and a comfortable layout for cruising.

The master suite is down from the saloon and simply furnished with a king-size berth, a settee to port and a bureau that doubles as a desk. Absent are the usual headboard and overhead treatments, and the result is a serene and comfortable getaway. A large head with a faux wood sole and a spacious shower completes the master.

The VIP stateroom is forward, accessed from the saloon by going up to and across the pilothouse, then down past the day head (which also serves the stateroom). The cabin is simple but comfortable, with two ports, an overhead hatch and an exceptionally large walk-in hanging locker.

The pilothouse is seamanlike, with a Stidd helm seat, a simple black instrument panel with space to lay out charts, and a settee with table against the after bulkhead. The windows are set a bit high for good views while standing, but this will be remedied on future 57s. The pilot berth folds out of the bulkhead, which allows two people to stay in the pilothouse on long voyages, with one sleeping while the other keeps watch. A rack that hangs charts behind the settee prevents the navigator from struggling against the curl from rolled charts.

The usual watertight door to the side deck is on the starboard side, but the port side is unusual with the door leading into a vestibule that is open to the deck and includes the stairs to the flying bridge. This not only provides weather protection, but creates an easier way to get food to the bridge from the galley.

The split-level upper decks are immense. The bridge has a simple fiberglass helm pod ahead of an L-shape settee and barbecue, all surrounded by coamings high enough that a windscreen is unnecessary. The boat deck, which extends over the lower side decks, is so large that the Zodiac RIB and Brower crane seem lost on its 21-foot length.

Voyagers will delight in the engineroom’s full headroom and-thanks to the single 330 hp John Deere 6081 diesel-wealth of space. The 17.5kW Onan generator has a power take-off, which, at the touch of a button, can provide a 6-knot cruise without the main engine, according to the builder.

Even better, the get-home system has full Mathers shifting, and it can be used for economical slow-speed operation. Because the John Deere main is a slow-turning diesel, the Onan also provides hydraulic power for the bowthruster. With 2,500 gallons of fuel, the 57 has long legs at cruising speed.

Other systems aboard Raven include a Kabola furnace that uses hot-water radiators, CruiseAir a/c, a Sea Recovery 600-gpd watermaker and a 5.5kW Fischer Panda genset for night use. A large sea chest/dump chest reduces the number of holes in the hull to three.

Northern Marine has a reputation for go-anywhere yachts with outstanding systems, and this 57 is a fine example of that philosophy.

Northern Marine 57 Raised Pilothouse Details

The Northern Marine 57 Raised Pilothouse is an expedition style yacht that is easily maneuvered thanks to its dimensions. Built with the same premium materials and leading construction techniques as its much larger siblings, the 57 RPH offers a more personal long-range cruising experience with the same level of seaworthy design.

As a leader in advanced resin-infusion technology, the hull of the Northern Marine 57 is extraordinarily strong which is what today's long-range cruisers demand. The high bulwarks provide a drier ride while the bulbous bow, keel, and stabilizers offer exceptional performance and stability. The result is a smooth, comfortable ride for all your guests on board. Wide side decks make walking around the boat safer and easier.

The flybridge on the 57 has an upper helm station with full controls for cruising with a view. There is a settee and seating under a hardtop for al fresco dining while enjoying the sunset. Aft on the bridge is a full-beam deck that can be used for tender storage and additional lounging space. The aft cockpit is covered by the deck, includes a built-in entertainment center, outdoor seating, and stairs to the transom platform.

The Northern Marine 57 interior is almost entirely customizable to the taste of the owner. Every piece of wood, fabric, and component is of the highest quality. The salon takes advantage of the wide beam offering a spacious and comfortable arrangement. Large windows allow lots of natural light and exceptional views from the climate-controlled sitting area. Adjacent to the fully equipped galley is a settee that converts to a formal dining area. Visitors to the pilothouse enjoy a panoramic view forward from an observation lounge overlooking the lower helm; a pilot berth ensures proper watch-keeping on long passages.

Owner and guest accommodations on the 57 are spacious and private. Two staterooms are placed forward for guests, kids, or grandkids, while the master suite is midship and has a private entry way.

The Northern Marine 57 is designed to cruise on a single John Deere engine that is extremely efficient. Combined with a 2,500 gallon fuel capacity, and the 57 RPH has an incredibly long range for cruising.

Integrity and the relentless pursuit of the deal defines Moran Yacht & Ship - I am grateful that you were on this journey with me. This magical machine KISMET is the second yacht I’ve had built with Moran Yacht & Ship. KISMET has brought joy, hope, and the gift of discovery to many lives - including my own. You have made this world a better place! Owner, KISMET
By way of background, my business interests include controlling stakes in 3 publicly traded companies which operate vessels in the 500 to 5000dwt range. On average, one new vessel a year would be added to the fleet. As a result, I have access to in-house marine architects, engineers and construction supervisors. Consequently, when I decided to build my first large motor yacht, I did not feel I needed the services of a company like Moran Yacht & Ship. In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. In short, I would not consider building another yacht without engaging Moran Yacht & Ship to provide the services they are so good in delivering. Former Owner, NORTHERN STAR

Google Pixel 8 launch event: all the news

By Emma Roth , a news writer who covers the streaming wars, consumer tech, crypto, social media, and much more. Previously, she was a writer and editor at MUO.

Google has launched the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2 following a steady stream of leaks — plus Google’s own teasers — that left little to the imagination.

The Pixel 8 Pro has better cameras and a brighter screen to go with a starting price of $999. Meanwhile, the standard Pixel 8 has a slightly smaller 6.2-inch display compared to its predecessor. Both phones share Google’s new Tensor G3 chipset, as well as Android 14 out of the box and a promise of seven years of OS upgrades , and are available for preorders starting today.

The Pixel Watch 2 has some design changes, too, and is available for preorder starting at $349. There’s a new crown and updated sensor array, plus some features carried over from the Fitbit Sense 2.

You can follow along with all the latest news from the Pixel 8 launch event below or jump straight to the biggest announcements .

Google’s seven-year Pixel update promise is historic — or meaningless

Google’s pixel 8 launch was a parade of ai, google pixel 8 launch event: the 7 biggest announcements.

  • Google Photos’ new AI tools are as complicated and messy as a memory
  • Google’s new Pixel 8 is a little bit smaller and a little bit smarter
  • Android 14 is now available for Pixel phones
  • The Pixel Watch 2 adds new sensors, longer battery life, and better accuracy
  • The Pixel 8 Pro has better cameras, a brighter screen, and a lot of new AI tricks

Did you know the Pixel Watch 2 was going to have UWB? Or that the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro would have higher clockspeeds? How about 8K video recording and 480fps slow-mo?

Kamila Wojciechowska and Mishaal Rahman , two of the foremost Android code sleuths, found all of the above and more. Every company’s phones tend to leak these days, but Google is batting some kind of record .

Wes Davis

IDC VP Francisco Jeronimo posted this week that Google has sold 37.9 million Pixel phones globally since 2016. 9to5Google did some math concluding that the company sold about 10 million of them in the last 12 months — an improvement over its 2019 best of 7.2 million.

That’s progress, but then again, Apple and Samsung each shipped hundreds of millions of phones last year, so those new Pixel 8 phones have a lot of ground to make up.

What’s up with the temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro?

A screencap from Google’s Pixel 8 launch event. A closeup of a blue Pixel 8 Pro, with a temperature sensor visible below the LED flash module on the right side of the camera bar. A line goes from the temperature sensor to the words “temperature sensor.”

The Pixel 8 Pro has an infrared temperature sensor. Why does the Pixel 8 Pro have a temperature sensor?

For an unusual feature on a $1,000 flagship phone, Google really isn’t saying much about it. The Pixel 8 Pro announcement mentions it almost in passing:

Jay Peters

The Pixel 8 and the what-is-a-photo apocalypse

Photo of bay blue Pixel 8 Pro in hand

One of the first known photo fakes, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln , was made just decades after the dawn of photography itself. Since then, photographers have found themselves in endless arguments about what truly constitutes a photo — what’s real, what’s fake, and when is editing too much? Now, as we head into an era where AI-powered tools are everywhere and easily accessible, the discussion is going to be messier than ever. And with the Pixel 8, Google has turned the question of “what is a photo” right on its head.

Google has been leading smartphone photography down this path for many years now. The company pioneered the concept of computational photography, where smartphone cameras do a huge amount of behind-the-scenes processing to spit out a photo that contains more detail than the camera sensor can detect in a single snap. Most modern smartphones use a system like Google’s HDR Plus technology to take a burst of images and combine them into one computationally-created picture, merging highlights, shadows, details, and other data to deliver a more pristine photo. It’s accepted practice at this point, but it also means that a baseline smartphone photo is already more than just “a photo” — it’s many of them, with their best parts combined.

Google deserted desserts publicly in 2019, but it never stopped the codenames — a pineapple upside down cake was an easter egg in a developer video this May. And each new version number still gets a lawn statue, which Google has needed to repair and relocate from time to time.

Dave Burke, who posted the tweet, is Google’s longtime head of Android engineering. (via 9to5Google )

I can’t believe Google finally did it. I’m still in disbelief. An Android phone with seven years of updates — not security patches, but real OS and feature updates? It’s unheard of. It’s historic.

It’s the opposite of what we’ve come to expect from Google over the past decade and change — so many great smartphone features sadly left locked away because of Android fragmentation , so many products buried in the Google graveyard . With “seven years of OS upgrades, security updates, feature drops, and AI innovations,” will the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro finally break the cycle?

Jon Porter

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Google’s latest products are filled with AI. There’s Magic Editor , a photo editing tool powered by generative AI; there’s Conversation Detection , an audio transparency feature powered by AI; there are improved heart rate algorithms , which, yes, are also powered by AI.

Seven years of OS updates? Sounds like a great way to get more AI features from Google . New photography features? All AI . Tensor processor? Designed for AI, baby ! “As always, our focus is on making AI more helpful for everyone, in a way that’s both bold and responsible,” Google’s hardware chief Rick Osterloh said in an introduction that, by my count, included the word “AI” over a dozen times. Over the course of the hour-long launch, Google’s presenters referenced AI over 50 times.

Enterprise IT teams have a few new options for workers with devices running Android 14 , as Google’s blog post mentions a default screen lock PIN that has increased from four to six, the ability for admins to allow only approved credential managers to store login info, the ability to block potentially insecure 2G connections, and logs for ultra wideband.

Now that the new OS has launched along with the Pixel 8 family of devices , Android 14 can make it easier to select certain profiles for certain apps, switch between profiles, and save work-related screenshots directly to the work profile only.

Here’s how Google’s new Pixel 8 phones stack up to the Pixel 7 lineup

Pixel 8 Pro in bay blue with rear panel facing up.

In addition to officially rolling out Android 14 , Google introduced the Pixel Watch 2 and a new lineup of phones during its Made by Google Event on Wednesday. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro start at $699 and $999, respectively, and will be available on October 12th.

On the spec front, both phones sport Google’s new Tensor G3 chip, which is an upgrade over the G2 chip that marked Google’s Pixel 7 lineup. Each also comes with a 120Hz max refresh rate and seven years of software support and security updates. The Pro 8 touts a maximum of 1TB of storage as well, along with a new sensor for measuring the temperature of beverages, surfaces, and — perhaps one day — maybe even people.

Here’s how Google’s new Pixel 8 phones compare to their top competitors

Two Pixel 8 phones, one in pink and one in gray, sitting face-down on a table with people having a meal.

Last year’s Pixel 7 phones were an iterative spec bump and nice refinement in the design department (as polarizing as their looks remained), but part of what made those phones special was how much they offered for fairly competitive prices.

Now, Google has announced the $699 Pixel 8 and $999 Pixel 8 Pro (which are $100 price increases over last year’s phones), each due to arrive on October 12th, and once again, they look a lot like a slow burn of subtle hardware improvements — albeit in a slick new light-blue color option on the Pro. But the showstopper feature of the new Pixels may be Google’s software support, as it’s claiming the new phones will see seven whole years of OS and security updates — rivaling Apple’s reign as the longest-lasting phones.

The biggest announcements from today’s Made by Google event for the release of the Pixel 8 phones, Pixel Watch 2, Android 14, and a slew of new generative AI features coming to Photos, Assistant, and more are all right here.

Bluetooth Super Wideband is only for Pixel 8 and newer — it’s in the fine print .

Google announces new colors and features for its Pixel Buds Pro earbuds

Google claims its latest smartphone makes the ‘enhance’ meme a reality.

During an onstage presentation at today’s Pixel 8 Pro launch , Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh showed off how the smartphone is able to retroactively add detail to a photograph when you pinch to zoom in. “So the kind of zoom enhancement you used to see in science fiction? It’s right in the phone in your hand,” Osterloh said after introducing the feature, which Google is calling “Zoom Enhance.”

Osterloh is referring, of course, to the countless sci-fi movies and police procedural shows that have shown characters zooming impossibly far into photos to reveal clues and details that simply could not have been present in the original image. Often, these scenes hinge on “enhancing” unbelievably small reflections, inevitably revealing the identity of a murder suspect.

Google is launching a generative AI-enhanced version of Assistant

Assistant with Bard

During the Made by Google event , where it debuted new Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 hardware, Google also announced it’s launching Assistant with Bard , which leverages generative AI to provide personalized assistance to users. The company says the new AI-enhanced assistant can do things like help plan your next trip, find details in your email inbox, and even create a grocery list.

Just like Bard on the web, Assistant with Bard will integrate with some of the company’s existing apps, such as Gmail and Docs, to help you find and summarize information. Additionally, you can interact with the tool through text, voice, or images, and it will still retain some of Assistant’s key features that allow you to do things like send a text message.

Google’s latest Pixel launch event has come to an end. Even though some of the products Google revealed were leaked well in advance , the company still managed to throw in a couple of surprises.

Here are all the biggest announcements from the Made by Google event.

Wi-Fi 7 is limited to the US, CA, UK, EU, and AU for now.

For both phones, the “Beyond 24-hour battery life” claim is tested “across a mix of talk, data, standby, and use of other features. Average battery life during testing was approximately 31 hours.”

Here’s Google’s spec comparison page , too.

Made by Google 2023 event — how to watch Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 launch

Get ready for a lot of new Google products this week

Pixel 8 at Made by Google 2023 event on October 4

It's now Google's turn in the fall product launch spotlight. The Made by Google hardware event gets underway tomorrow (October 4), and the company's not exactly being coy about what it plans to show off at the event.

Heading into its October 4 showcase, Google posted teasers for the Made by Google event that confirm we'll not only see the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, but the Pixel Watch 2 as well. And knowing what's behind the curtain ahead of time certainly takes some suspense out of the event, though we still have some questions about Google's upcoming products that we hope to have answered.

For that reason, it's worth tuning in to the upcoming Made by Google event to find out just how Google's new flagship phones can compete against both the Galaxy S23 and the recently released iPhone 15 lineup. The Pixel Watch sequel is intriguing as well given how much we like Google's first entry into the world of smartwatches. And there's always the potential for surprise product announcements that remain a secret regardless of Google's tendency to blab out things ahead of time.

With that in mind, here's a guide on how to watch Made by Google 2023 so that you can see all of the new products Google has planned for the rest of the year.

How to watch the Made by Google 2023 live stream

The Made by Google 2023 event takes place Wednesday, October 4 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT/3 p.m. BST. Google is holding its product launch in New York this year, and Tom's Guide will be on hand to share some first impressions about the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Watch 2 and whatever else happens to appear.

Don't despair if you're not going to be there in person. You can always watch the Made by Google 2023 live stream, which Google is hosting on YouTube . The Google event live stream is now in place, and you can get notified of when it goes live.

Previously, another Google teaser video serving as a placeholder for the event live stream promised that the "W8 is almost over" and that "Gr8 things are coming," just in case you still weren't sure if the Pixel 8 was on the agenda for Made by Google.

Made by Google 2023 live stream: What we're expecting

Given all the teaser videos, it's not going out on a limb to predict the latest Pixel 8 phones and a Pixel Watch follow-up are planned for this year's edition of Made by Google. But the devil's in the details — here's what we're expecting to see.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro : Google's fall hardware event nearly always delivers new phones, and Google has confirmed its latest flagships will play a role at the October 4 event. So what will the Pixel 8 lineup deliver?

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

A new Tensor chipset is almost certainly in the cards, with the Tensor G3 set to power the Pixel 8 lineup. While Tensor generally puts the focus on its neural engine that delivers the kind of machine learning-powered features that make the Pixels so unique, rumors suggest Google is working to boost performance for the Tensor G3. That would be a welcome change as Pixel phones tend to lag behind the best phones from Apple, Samsung and OnePlus in terms of performance.

On the photography front, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro could be getting a new main camera sensor that's physically larger than what appeared in the Pixel 7 models. That would allow the cameras to capture more light. We also hear that Google is planning a lot of new software capabilities like staggered HDR, where multiple exposures are captured simultaneously for sharper images.

google pixel 8 pro leaked video featuring temperatrure sensor

The Pixel 8 could get a smaller display than what the Pixel 7 offered, shrinking from 6.3 inches to 6.17 inches. But the display could see a boost to its refresh rate, matching the 120Hz refresh rate the Pixel 8 Pro is set to offer.

As for the Pixel 8 Pro, leaked images suggest that a temperature sensor is coming to the phone's camera bar. It's supposed to be capable of actually telling you how hot or cold things are, so we're eager to see just how Google sells this particular capability.

The days of super cheap Pixel flagships could be over. A rumor claims that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will cost $100 more than their predecessors, giving them starting prices of $699 and $999, respectively. We've got more on the Pixel 8 vs. Pixel 8 Pro differences based on rumors about both devices.

Pixel Watch 2: Also confirmed to be appearing at Made by Google 2023 is a follow-up to Google's Pixel Watch . So how will Google make sure that the sequel surpasses the original?

Pixel Watch 2

Apparently, it will start with a chip change, as Google is rumored to be dropping the Exynos 9110 inside the current Pixel Watch for a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Plus. That will supposedly give the Pixel Watch 2 a battery life boost. Another potential switch involves ditching stainless steel for an aluminum frame that's cheaper and lighter.

As for new capabilities, Pixel Watch 2 rumors suggest the smartwatch will gain the ability to track stress levels, a "multi-path" heart rate monitor and safety improvements such as car crash detection.

Android 14: Google's Android update is usually out by this point, but Android 14 has yet to make its debut beyond the beta that's currently available. The arrival of the Pixel 8 seems like a perfect time to launch Android 14, since that's the version of Google's phone software that will run on the new models.

A sample of an Android 14 emoji wallpaper on a Google Pixel 7a

Android 14 doesn't figure to usher in substantial changes to the Android experience, but there are some improvements that should make using your phone more convenient. Highlights include the ability to use the phone's camera flash to alert you to incoming notifications, more refined permissions for sharing photos and video, a Health Connect app that's integrated into the platform and built-in satellite connectivity.

Some sort of audio gear: If you watch that teaser video Google is running in place of the Made for Google 2023 event live stream, you'll notice several products likely to appear at the event — a Pixel 8 smartphone, a Pixel Watch 2... and something else. Freezing the frame at about the 11-second mark, the mystery product looks very much like an audio device — there are two very small speaker slits and what appears to be the edge of an eartip emerging from the shadows.

mystery product in Google teaser video

If we had to guess, we'd assume these were new Pixel Buds models tied to the Pixel 8 release. Google last released the Pixel Buds Pro more than a year ago and the Pixel Buds A-Series well before that. That's long enough to go between audio upgrades.

Google Pixel Event 2023: Everything announced, including the Pixel 8 series, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Buds Pro, Android 14

Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of hardware at Google, Google Pixel Event 2023, Made By Google

Today’s Google Pixel Event, Made By Google, gave the search and consumer tech giant a chance to show off what it’s been working on. There were so many updates on Pixel 8, Pixel Watch 2 and other goodies. We summed up the most important parts from the keynote below.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the latest versions of Google’s smartphone technology, with the company touting , “They’re fast and secure phones with Google AI and the most advanced Pixel Cameras yet.”

  • At 6.1 inches, the Pixel 8’s display is a fraction of an inch smaller than its predecessor, while the Pixel 8 Pro retains its 6.8 inches.
  • The 8’s resolution is the same as before at 1080 x 2400, while the 8 Pro actually loses a bit of Pixel density from 512 to 489 ppi at 1344 x 2992.
  • The biggest benefit to the new Actua display (or Super Actua, in the case of the Pro) is extreme brightness. The 8 peaks out at 2,000 nits and the 8 Pro at 2,400. Both screens have a 120hz peak refresh rate.
  • The latest version of the Android handset starts at $699 for the 8 and $999 for the 8 Pro. Read more .

Meanwhile, the Google Pixel 8 Pro upgrades include the display, the glass with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and a bunch on the camera .

Here are some camera highlights:

  • 50 mp main wide camera, with a 24mm equivalent when talking in classic film camera focal lengths.
  • 2x “Optical Quality” mode.
  • The addition of Google’s Super Res Zoom digital computational tele mode, which can go up to 8x. Read even more .

Darrell Etherington’s first impression: “Google has taken a very iterative approach to this year’s model, but the upgraded camera specs and the new Tensor G3 processor that powers the Pixel 8 Pro look to be where a lot of the benefits of upgrading lie.”

Speaking of the camera, two of the new features include Magic Editor , which enables background filling and subject repositioning, and Best Take, which combines multiple shots to create the best group photo. Read more .

Also, the Pixel 8 Pro will be the first hardware to run Google’s generative AI models on-device , according to the company.

Google Pixel

Pixel Watch 2

Google finally released its first smartwatch last year, to mixed reviews. Now it is getting some upgrades.

The biggest changes? Improved heart rate monitoring and the addition of a pair of new sensors designed to give the device a fuller picture of its wearer. Also, the addition of a body-response sensor and skin temperature sensor are borrowed from the Fitbit line and bring along new stress management features. Read more .

Pixel Buds Pro

Google’s update of the Pixel Buds Pro includes features like conversation detection — which is similar to Apple’s conversation awareness features for AirPods — listening stats, and support for Bluetooth Super Wideband for better sound quality on calls.

It also uses AI to detect when you start speaking and reduces the background noise by switching to the transparency mode. Once you’re done talking music resumes and the buds switch back to active noise cancellation mode. Read more .

Android 14, Google Assistant, Call Screen and more

The Android 14 mobile operating system comes with new customization options, accessibility features and more this year. The OS will begin rolling out to supported Pixel devices today and then to other Android devices later this year. Highlights include switching between wallpapers to quickly make changes to what you want to see at a glance and more easily set custom lock screen shortcuts. There are also new lock screen templates for fonts, widgets, colors and formats. Google also leverages AI to make changes to the lock screen based on your current situation. For example, if your area is having bad weather, the lock screen will make your weather widget more prominent. Read more .

Now on to Google Assistant, which is getting an AI-powered update. Assistant with Bard is a new version of the mobile personal assistant that’s essentially a combination of Google Assistant and Bard for mobile devices. It can now handle a broader range of questions and tasks, ranging from simple requests like “what’s the weather?,” “set an alarm” or “text Jenny,” as before, to now more intelligent responses provided by Google’s Bard AI. Read more .

Another upgrade is to the Call Screen feature that enables users to better determine which calls they want to skip and those they want to take. This includes the AI answering calls on behalf of users — a realistic-sounding voice, I might add — in an impressive demo during the event. Even better, it is helping users receive 50% fewer spam calls, on average, by managing calls from unknown numbers. The company claims the feature is now smart enough to separate the calls you want to take from those you don’t. Read more .

Google Pixel Fold

The Pixel Fold, which launched earlier this year, is Google’s first foldable. “The $1,800 asking price is still prohibitively expensive, but features like this will go a long way toward getting a lot more value out of the device,” according to Brian Heater.

Let’s now talk about Dual-Screen Interpreter mode. The feature arrives today as part of a larger Pixel drop, leverages Google’s long-standing translation expertise. By opening the device completely flat, you can speak to someone in a different language, with translations popping up on either side. So they’ll see what you’re saying in their language and vice verse. The system is currently available in 45 languages. Read more .

Google Pixel event 2023: How to watch and what to expect

New Pixels abound!

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

It's that time of year again. Unlike many other Android manufacturers, Google saves its biggest phone launch for the tail end of the year, essentially getting a head start on next year with its latest Pixel flagships. This year is no different, although now, Google seems to have a good formula for its mobile hardware, making the Pixel more lineup popular than ever. Thus, there's more pressure to get it right.

After many rumors and leaks, we pretty much have a good idea of what to expect from Google's upcoming Pixel event . The company has already begun teasing its products, so it's not exactly a mystery at this point. However, if you haven't been paying close attention to the mobile sphere lately, then we've got you covered with a roundup of the announcements we expect to see at the upcoming Made by Google event.

How to watch the Made by Google event

The Made by Google launch will take place on October 4 at 10 a.m. ET in New York City, where it will host a live, in-person event. However, for those of us who aren't lucky enough to attend, the company will livestream the event on both the Google Store website and on the official Made by Google YouTube channel.

To make things easy, we've embedded the YouTube video below, where you can click the "Notify me" button to ensure you don't miss the big event.

Google Pixel 8

The Google Pixel 8 Pro official teaser

The highlight of the Pixel event will be the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro . These are Google's latest flagship phones that will further refine and build upon the design and experiences we saw with the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel 6 before it.

The design of the phones is similar to their predecessors, maintaining the iconic camera bar, but you'll notice the corners are more rounded. And while Google has yet to show off the displays, rumors tell us the Pixel 8 display will be slightly smaller at 6.17 inches, while the Pixel 8 Pro will move to a flat display instead of a curved one seen on previous Pro models.

Based on previous leaks, a new temperature sensor sits in the Pixel 8 Pro camera bar, although we're not entirely sure what Google's purpose for this is.

Be an expert in 5 minutes

Get the latest news from Android Central, your trusted companion in the world of Android

Still from a leaked Pixel 8 Pro video showing the temperature sensor

Internally, the phones will be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset, which should enable better performance and, hopefully, better efficiency and thermal management . It will also be the driving force for Google's new and improved AI features that we expect to arrive with the phones. These should provide plenty of new ways to edit and play with your photos and videos in ways we may not have expected.

Among these is an Audio Magic Eraser that was leaked earlier this year, which will allow users to adjust various audio elements in a video to highlight the sounds they want. We're also expecting to see the new Magic Editor that Google showed off at I/O 2023. This lets users move elements on an image around and even adjust select parts of a photo to better highlight certain aspects like the sky.

A boy holding some balloons while sitting on a bench

We've also seen leaks of an interesting new feature that will let users adjust the facial expressions of people in a photo, likely from multiple shots taken at the time of capture. Beyond that, we're expecting new video enhancement features, including Night Sight video, new manual controls for images, and all of the other Pixel features we've already come to know and love.

The phones are expected to sport new colors , such as a "Bay" blue hue and a Porcelain colorway to match the Pixel Fold .

Google Pixel Watch 2

Google Pixel Watch 2 teaser

The original Pixel Watch was a long time coming, but it still left a lot to be desired, particularly around battery life. With the new Pixel Watch 2 , it seems like Google might have solved that issue by ditching Samsung for Qualcomm this time around.

Rumors point to the new Pixel Watch 2 sporting the new Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset, which launched last year and has only been featured on a few phones thus far. This promises to bring improved performance and battery life , and it's a chip we hope to see grace more Wear OS smartwatches , so we're happy to see Google playing nice with Qualcomm.

Google Pixel Watch 2 tease

Externally, the watch will look pretty identical to the first-generation Pixel Watch, albeit with some very subtle changes and a cool blue colorway for one of the watch band options, which nicely matches the Pixel 8 Pro. The device is said to feature new and upgraded health sensors akin to devices like the Fitbit Sense 2 and a revamped Fitbit app , which means the Pixel Watch 2 is inching closer to being the best Fitbit smartwatch on the market.

On the software front, the Pixel Watch 2 is expected to run Wear OS 4 , which has only been available on Samsung's Galaxy Watch series. It should bring better performance, an easier way to transfer to a new phone, and new apps like Gmail and Google Calendar.

Google Pixel Buds Pro

Teaser for the Pixel Buds Pro in Porcelain

We expect this will be a smaller announcement since the Pixel Buds Pro are already available. However, per Google's teasers, the earbuds are expected to come in a new Porcelain colorway, and some leaks have also shown them off in a blue hue to match the other new Pixel devices.

In addition to new colors, it appears Google is set to include a new update that will bring additional features to the Pixel Buds Pro, such as Conversation Detection and low-latency audio.

Android 14 logo on a Galaxy S23 Ultra

Following a rumored delay, Google is likely to announce the stable Android 14 update at the Pixel event. This means that the new update could arrive on current Pixel phones before the new ones are in customers' hands.

Based on the near-stable betas, Android 14 isn't a particularly large update when compared to Android 13 . However, we've seen some welcome changes coming to accessibility, 10-bit HDR support, custom lock screens, and a no-integrated Health Connect for better management of your health data across apps.

Your home screen is also getting some exciting new features, allowing users to create a wallpaper using generative AI.

But beyond Android 14, we also expect more Pixel-exclusive features per the Pixel Ffature drop, which was also delayed and will likely be tied into the Android 14 update for Pixels. We expect this will bring additional options like an updated camera interface, but we'll see what else this new feature drop will bring when the update is announced.

New Pixels, Android 14's public release, and more

Google's annual Made by Google event is almost here, and you can easily watch it live . The event is scheduled for October 4th and promises some big announcements. Google has already teased the Pixel 8 series and the Pixel Watch 2 , so their official release is all but a given. We should hopefully also see the possible public rollout of Android 14 for compatible Pixels. But the company could have some surprises in store as well. Maybe Google will drop a new Chromecast? Below is everything we expect to see at the Made by Google event on October 4th.

Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro

The Pixel 8 series will be the star of Google's October 4th event. With the debut of the Pixel 6 series in 2021, the company gave its smartphone efforts a new lease on life. The Pixel 7 followed up a year later with all the right upgrades, including a better lossless 2x zoom option and up to 30x SuperRes Zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro. This year's Pixel 8 appears set to take things to the next level with some significant upgrades.

Based on an avalanche of leaks over the last few weeks, we know almost everything about the Pixel 8 and the 8 Pro. Google itself has shown off the design of the devices as a part of its event teaser. The two Pixels will feature a more rounded chassis to aid ergonomics, an allegedly much brighter display, a faster Tensor G3 chip, and substantial camera upgrades .

The smaller Pixel could get even smaller this year, with its display size seemingly being trimmed to 6.2 inches, making it better for one-handed use. On the bright side, the panel might finally feature a 120Hz refresh rate. While the Pixel 8 Pro's 6.7-inch display size will apparently remain unchanged, Google is rumored to have opted for a flat panel this year. Both phones will purportedly reach a peak brightness of 2,400 nits.

Google's Tensor G3 chip should serve duty inside the 2023 Pixels. The SoC will reportedly feature a 9-core CPU utilizing newer Cortex-A510, A715, and X3 cores, and an Arm Mali-G715 GPU. Other rumored features include a dedicated AV1 encoder, a newer Tensor Processing Unit, and a faster digital signal processor (DSP). More importantly, the chip should run cooler thanks to an advanced packaging tech from Samsung .

The Exynos 5300 modem from the Pixel 7 will supposedly remain unchanged, but Google could make some modifications for better connectivity.

Pixels are known for their cameras, and Google might again raise the smartphone photography bar with its 2023 Pixels. Both phones are rumored to use a bigger 50 MP primary camera, with the 8 Pro also using a larger ultrawide 64MP shooter and an updated periscope sensor with a faster f/2.8 aperture.

As if all the rumored major hardware improvements are not enough, Google plans to provide up to seven years of software updates for the Pixel 8 series. This kind of software support is unheard of in the Android ecosystem and matches that of iPhones.

The Pixel 8 won't be the only major announcement from Google at its October 4th event. The company will also unveil its second smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 2. While the first-gen Pixel Watch was a decent offering, it had a lot of issues, including outdated internals, sub-par battery life, and plenty of bugs. If rumors are accurate, Google plans to make amends with its second smartwatch.

The Pixel Watch 2 will reportedly use a faster and more efficient Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chip. Apart from better performance, it should also allow the wearable to last longer. While the display size appears to remain unchanged this generation, Google could use a brighter panel. While not evident from Google's teaser, the watch body is also rumored to be lighter than before, as it will ditch stainless steel in favor of aluminum .

On the software front, the upcoming Google smartwatch will apparently run Wear OS 4 , based on Android 13. Besides the performance and efficiency improvements, the OS will bring Material You to the watch for a more colorful UI experience.

Google should launch several new watch band options for the Pixel Watch 2 as well, including two metal bands . The Pixel Watch 2 should go up for pre-order alongside the Pixel 8 series, with Google reportedly planning to bundle the watch for free with the 8 Pro in select markets.

Google was widely expected to release the stable Android 14 build in early September. But after months of public testing and several beta releases, all the company offered was a Quarterly Feature Drop and a brand makeover for Android . Some last-minute problems reportedly forced the company to delay the release to October 4th. That's the exact date on which Google is holding its annual hardware event, and it is the perfect stage for the company to start the public rollout of the next major version of Android.

New Pixel Buds Pro colors? New Chromecast and Nest hardware?

The Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 should be the real highlight of the upcoming Made by Google event. And while the company is not expected to announce new wireless earbuds, rumors suggest we might see some fresh color options for the Pixel Buds Pro . The new shades — Porcelain and Sky Blue — will reportedly match the Pixel 8's color options.

The Pixel Buds Pro still ranks high in our favorite wireless earbuds list, and there's little wrong with them to warrant a new model. So, Google's plan to release additional colorways for the earbuds is a great way to revive consumer interest.

There have been rumors of a 2023 Google Chromecast . With the current-gen 4K streaming device nearing its third birthday, it is due for a refresh. While the device has not appeared in renders, some leaks have shown a Chromecast remote with circular buttons and a revamped layout.

Google also tends to showcase new Nest hardware at its annual Made by Google event. However, there have not been any leaks regarding new Nest security cameras, Wi-Fi routers, or smart speakers and displays. So, it's difficult to say if any new Nest devices will be unveiled at the event.

Impressive new Pixel devices are coming

Google's focus on its hardware efforts has led to the Pixel lineup improving drastically in the last few years. The Pixel 8 series should raise the bar further with its refined design, faster internals, and better cameras. The Pixel Watch 2 should be in the same boat, and if all the leaks and rumors are correct, it would be a significant upgrade over its predecessor.

Thankfully, we just have to wait until October 4th to know how Google has improved its Pixel lineup this year.

What to expect from Google’s October 4 event for Pixel 8 and more

Avatar for Ben Schoon

In just a few days, Google will host an event in New York City to unveil the Pixel 8 series and the Pixel Watch 2. Here’s everything you should expect to see from the event.

This issue of 9to5Google Weekender is a part of 9to5Google’s rebooted newsletter that highlights the biggest Google stories with added commentary and other tidbits. Sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox early!

The obvious stars of the show at this week’s event will be the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Google’s updated flagships are set to potentially be very exciting, with lots of noteworthy updates including updated designs, new “Actua” displays that are much brighter, updated camera hardware and software, a lot of AI , and also the new Tensor G3 chipset. That chip might be the biggest potential source of improvements, as it’s rumored to be packing updated hardware that should be more efficient , and perhaps run cooler too.

Here are some key stories about Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro from the past few weeks:

  • Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro rumored to get 7 years of Android updates
  • Pixel 8 Pro leak reveals ‘Super Actua display’ for ‘direct sunlight’ viewing
  • Pixel 8 camera specs leak, adds manual controls, AI to change faces, Magic Editor, more [Video]

  • Source: Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro get slight price increase in the US, available in-store October 12
  • Sources: Pixel 8 Pro will keep physical SIM card and add Night Sight for video
  • Tensor G3 reportedly brings massive upgrades, UFS 4.0 storage, more to Pixel 8

google pixel 8 and pixel 8 pro

Beyond the phones, Google is also set to debut Pixel Watch 2, the sequel to its first smartwatch. Based on everything we’ve seen, this appears to be more of an “under the hood” sort of update, as the new smartwatch has the same design. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as it leaves the door open to lots of iterative improvements.

Some key things that we’ve learned about Pixel Watch 2 thus far include a new chipset which should make the watch faster and improve battery life, as well as new health sensors that should result in additional Fitbit features, such as stress tracking. New bands also appear to be coming .

  • Google shows off full Pixel Watch 2 design [Video]
  • Pixel Watch 2 pops up with Snapdragon W5, 2GB RAM, Wear OS 4

The only other hardware that’s confirmed to be coming is a minor hardware refresh to Pixel Buds Pro. Google showed off a new Porcelain color while teasing this event, and we previously reported that a blue color was also coming.

But these are just new colors.

google presentation 4 october 2023

Google has confirmed that pre-orders for the new hardware will open up the day of the event, with the release date confirmed via a carrier (and our own sources ) to be October 12.

Any ‘one more thing’ surprises?

Realistically, most Google events are pretty tame when it comes to dropping big, unexpected announcements. Perhaps the biggest reveal we’ve had in recent years was at Google I/O 2022 when the company dropped a first look at Pixel 7, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Tablet.

But, could we see any surprises this week?

If Google were to announce anything extra, the most logical reveal would be a new Chromecast. It wouldn’t be unprecedented to get TV hardware at a Pixel launch event, as we saw exactly that with the original Chromecast dropping alongside the Pixel 5 in 2020. And there’s plenty of evidence suggesting that a new Chromecast is coming, as we’ve covered.

  • A new Chromecast with Google TV is in the works
  • New Chromecast with Google TV remote shows up in Android 14 Beta [Video]

However, the lack of any hardware leaks or really anything particularly substantial would suggest this probably isn’t happening.

Other guesses on teasers might include the potential of hearing more from Google’s foldable game – a “Pixel Flip” seems to be in the pipeline – or maybe a tease of the Pixel 8a given we’ve literally already seen hands-on images of the device . But, again, we don’t think this is likely at all.

Stay tuned for 9to5Google’s full coverage of Google’s upcoming event, and our forthcoming reviews of the new hardware.

This Week’s Top Stories

You guessed it, more Pixel leaks

With Google’s event just a couple of days away, the leaks just keep coming. Here’s a list of all the big leaks from this week.

Google Podcasts is dead

Earlier this week Google announced that it would shut down Google Podcasts next year in favor of YouTube Music. The closure comes as absolutely no surprise, as Google Podcasts has been stagnant for a while, but it’s still a shame for many users, as the app’s simplicity and pre-installed status on Android phones was useful.

Original Google Pixel event live blog follows below:

The day has arrived: it's time to strap in for the big Google Pixel event of 2023, as Made by Google gets underway! It's the day when 'The Big G' is slated to unveil its latest and best new Android phones – the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro – plus the Pixel Watch 2 on the wearables front.

The Google Pixel event is being live-streamed around the world on Wednesday 4 October 2023 at 3pm BST in the UK (that's 7am PDT, 10am EDT, or 01:00am ACT), and if you can't watch along live then T3's crack team is here to bring you all the highlights as they happen!

This is the second major Google event of the year, following on from Google I/O back in May , and marks the next step in Google's progress. Now that the company has a foldable Pixel phone and the Pixel Tablet out in the world, the company's hardware is going from strength to strength – and the Pixel 8 series only looks to enhance the offering.

Mike Lowe portrait

I've been following Google's hardware launches for years and have been reviewing the company's award-winning Android phones gleefully in recent times (well, save for the Fold). I'm super-excited about the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launches, which have been a mainstay of T3 coverage for many months ahead of this reveal event.

No alarms and no surprises

Leaked Google promo shot of Google Pixel 8 Pro

In the words of Radiohead 's Thom Yorke, there will be 'no alarms and no surprises' at this event if all the rumours are to be believed. Weeks ahead of the event, the Pixel 8 and Pro leaked in full and since then we've even been privy to a full unboxing too.

It's a bit of a shame there are no expected surprises as it takes more than a sprinkling of fun out of a launch event. But, Google being Google, perhaps we'll be spoiled with some pre-show antics (remember the duck on stage at Google I/O?) or some AI slip-ups to enhance the viewing...

A pair of Pixels

Google Pixel 8 Pro leak

Tech Staff Writer Andy Sansom here on the early shift (who needs sleep?). In case you've been living under a proverbial rock, or just got back from a months-long expedition in the wilderness, today is the day we will see the Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro announced. There's been plenty of detailed leaks of what we might expect and to be fair they sound like a couple of standout handsets. The biggest rumoured upgrades seem to be a camera boost, a much brighter display and a small battery life increase. Of course, Google will probably have a bunch of cool Pixel first features too.

A pocket rocket

Google Pixel 7 review: holding white phone up against a wall with blue nails

Most people are excited about the Pixel 8 Pro but personally, as someone with small hands (woe is me), I'm buzzing for the baby Pixel 8. Most people expect it to be smaller than last year, while still sporting the new Tensor G3 chip, making for a pint-sized powerhouse.

I love a good small phone. There will always be a small place in my heart for the Sony Xperia X10 mini Pro Compact I had growing up, which was just 3.2 inches big yet still had a slide-out keyboard. The campaign for a new one starts here.

What's the fuss with Chromebook Plus?

Acer Chromebook Plus

It's been a busy week already for Google with the release of the Chromebook Plus standard. A revitalised take on the humble Chromebook, this is a new guaranteed minimum performance level for some of the best-value laptops on the market, utilising Google's own Chrome OS.

The requirements include at least an Intel i3 processor (or Ryzen 7000) and a minimum of 8GB of RAM. We've already seen the likes of Acer and Asus announce new machines with HP and Lenovo just some of the names who'll soon join the party.

Blowing off steam

Pixel 8 and iPhone in the sauna

We'll use any excuse to repost this brilliant picture from Google's Pixel 8 marketing campaign. There is a lot of competition obviously between Android devices and iPhones, but this campaign was before the launch of the iPhone 15.

Apple managed to avoid a price hike with its latest phones, but there is speculation that the Pixel 8 series could be priced significantly higher than last year. While hopefully not the case, this would put them in iPhone price territory, and further ignite the rivalry.   Coincidentally, check out our review of the new iPhone 15 Pro Max , the Mac daddy of the new iPhones.

Under the hood

Google Pixel 6

It's widely expected that the new range of Pixels will use a shiny new chipset. We're big fans of the Tensor G2 setup in the Pixel 7 series so its successor, presumed to be imaginatively named the Tensor G3 , should be something special.

Compared to Snapdragon and Apple's chips, the Tensor silicon tends not to impress so much on pure benchmark tests, but when it comes to actual performance and machine learning capabilities, Google's setup is second to none.

Snap happy

Google Pixel 7 Pro camera unit

If there's one thing we are particularly enamoured with on the Pixel 7 Pro , it's the camera. Google's camera software is brilliant and packed with useful features you'd never have thought of yourself. We're sure to see some neat new tricks for stills and video later today, including a rumoured Audio Eraser that bins unwanted background noise.

It's a hardware upgrade to the camera that has many people excited, however. Leaks suggest the Ultra-wide lens on the Pro model is jumping from 12MP to 48MP. Unfortunately, it sounds like there still isn't a telephoto lens on the base Pixel 8 so keen photographers should go for the top-end option.

7 year switch

Android 14 badge

We've heard that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will offer a massive seven years worth of updates. It's expected that they will both launch with Android 14 but that could take us (if my maths is correct, and the yearly cycle continues) up to Android 21! Who knows what the world, and phone landscape, will look like by then?

Kudos to Google if this is true, keeping the phones up to date and secure for years to come is a great sustainability boost and should help those who don't want to switch handsets every year.

As for what 2030 would look like? I don't even know what I'm having for lunch so don't look at me.

Mobile Gaming

Covering the iPhone 15 launch event, I was struck by just how heavy Apple went on mobile gaming and the amount of time they spent talking about the ray tracing capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max .

We've not heard of anything similar for the Pixel 8 Pro, but I'd love to see some gaming-specific upgrades, and with the Tensor G3 chipset we know that the phone should have enough performance to threaten the best gaming phones . Then again considering Stadia's untimely demise, perhaps Google is steering well clear of the gaming sphere. To be honest, just give me the Chrome dinosaur game and I'm happy.

Google and the technicolour smartphone

Pixel 8 Haze and Jade

Good morning Pixel people! T3 Staff Writer, Sam Cross , here to take you into the afternoon ahead of the Made by Google event.

One thing I want to talk about is the colour options said to be on offer this time out. There are six finishes which have been leaked. The base model Pixel 8 is said to come in Peony, Grey and Obsidian, while the Pro model will have Sky Blue, Porcelain and Obsidian options.

That's a relatively conservative colour palette, though I am a fan of the Peony. It also means the end of that sumptuous Hazel and Rose Gold combo from the Google Pixel 7 Pro . Quick, someone play the Titanic theme...

Watch your step

Google Pixel Watch 2

Right, let's leave the phones alone for a second and talk about another product expected to drop today – the Google Pixel Watch 2 . That model looks set to offer a decent boost over the original Google Pixel Watch , making it an attractive proposition.

The key part in that upgrade is a new chip. Rumours suggest Google will include a Snapdragon W5 series chip in the new smartwatch , which should make things much better overall.

In particular, the added power efficiency should make it possible to tackle more intensive tasks, and offer greater battery life. That's a solid upgrade for the device, and should give the Watch 2 a decent leg up over competitors.

AI integration

Of course, this is Google, and it wouldn't be a Google event without talk of AI – need I remind you of the Google IO event in the Summer, which mentioned it over 140 times? And, if the leaked ad we saw last week is anything to go by, this event will be no different.

The brand appear to be pushing the AI capabilities of the Google Pixel 8 hard this time out. Features spanning the camera, call screening and web pages all utilise AI to enhance the experience.

That should be enhanced with the new processor too. The Tensor chips have always been good for AI tasks, and there's no sign of that changing this time out. All in all, that should make it far easier to use in day to day life – no bad thing at all.

Shot on Pixel 8

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro camera app

While we've talked about the camera hardware already, it's certainly not the only new part of the camera worth mentioning. There's said to be a host of new software improvements too, which should make life with the Google Pixel 8 much easier.

We've even seen some images showing off a few of the features. An account called PBKreviews – who also showed off an unboxing video of the new handset – shared snaps using the zoom and the night mode on the device.

The results are really impressive. In particular, the zoomed shots at 5x retain a remarkable degree of clarity and detail. It looks like the Pixel 8 is going to continue the trend for top camera tech, then.

Will Google flip the script?

The official image of the Google Pixel Fold

With all the talk of the Google Pixel 8 range, you may have missed the news of a new foldable phone from the brand. That was spotted in some code for the Pixel Buds app recently, and makes reference to a previously unheard of device.

While there's no way of knowing what that is, we're confident it's one of two options: a reworked Google Pixel Fold , or a new Google Pixel Flip . Will we be treated to a sneak peak at today's event?

It's unlikely. Aside from this snippet of code and some references in a previous road map for the brand, we've not seen any other leaks about such a device. And – with the greatest of respect to Google – they aren't the best at keeping new products under wraps, so it would be a huge surprise.

Still, we can hope. It would certainly cause some fans to flip out.

It's a kind of magic

Google Photos Magic Eraser

Another new feature we should see more of today is the Magic Editor . That's the updated version of the Magic Eraser tool, and was teased at Google IO in the summer.

That feature also appeared in the recent leaked advert for the devices, giving us hope of seeing it arrive here. The feature utilises AI to enable users to make powerful edits to their photos, moving and changing objects to craft the perfect image.

It even showcased changing things like the sky or your outfit, to ensure you get the shot you want – even if you couldn't snap it first time out.

Attack of the affordable Androids

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE

Staff Writer Andy Sansom back in charge here, with less than two hours to go when our Tech Editor Mike Lowe will be frantically bringing you all the latest as it happens, you should see him in action, like an octopus on the DJ decks. While we're all waiting for the first glimpse of the Google Pixel 8, Samsung another manufacturer of the best Android phones, has announced a new phone itself. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE sounds like a mid-range phone that brings the best of the S23 range at a more affordable price point. Google's Pixel 7a is likely still going to be cheaper if you're after the ultimate affordable Android.

More Snoop Dogg?

Snoop Dogg Meta AI

Last week here at T3 we covered the launch of the Meta Quest 3 live, in that presentation from the Zuck himself we were treated to a fever dream-like experience. Snoop Dogg playing Dungeons and Dragons with us. Meta's new AI personalities look like a lot of fun (and creepy) and Google famously loves AI too.

I doubt we'll see anything quite on that level, but a boy can dream, can't he? Perhaps we'll get Usher helping us book cinema tickets, or Taylor Swift giving us NFL updates? In all seriousness, we might see a bit more of Google's own AI Google Bard, hopefully in the Pixel phones and Pixel 2 Smartwatch.

Sounds good to us

Google Pixel Buds Pro review

As well as the new phones and watch, there's also expected to be some news regarding the Pixel Buds Pro . Not a new bit of hardware as such, but it is thought that there will be some new colours to choose from, probably to match the phones.

There's also talk that there will be a software upgrade for the buds with conversation detection one of the most popularly speculated features to be added. While we don't quite rate them as among the best headphones on the market, they are a very capable and snazzy set of 'phones. And who knows, maybe they'll be revitalised with a host of new features?

Lance is in the building

Made By Google

With less than an hour to go the big names of the tech world have started to arrive in New York. Including US Editor In Chief for our sister site Techradar Lance Ulanoff who snapped this picture on-site.

The big question in T3 towers is, what will the warm-up act be, and how can it possibly compete with the dancing duck DJ set from the last Google event that still sends shivers down the spines of certain members of the team? Hopefully, they just bring him back and get him to model the watch and Pixel 8 Pro. His one word review of them? Quacking. Don't worry, I'll be handing over to our Tech Editor Mike Lowe soon.

Get ready folks

Google Pixel Tablet shown from behind

Right, we're nearly ready to tune in, remember to stick with us for all the latest as it happens, but if you do want to watch along check out our quick guide to tuning in. We'll also be bringing you the highlights after the fact so if you miss out, don't worry.

Even if you don't plan on grabbing a Pixel yourself, everyone with an Android phone should tune in to see what's coming with Android 14. Besides, we all use Google pretty much every day, so it's kind of a big deal.

This is your half an hour warning to put the kettle on and keep any snacks handy.

Ready for a show?

Made By Google

Okay final warning, we're now 15 minutes away, if you still haven't figured it out you can watch the event on the Made By Google YouTube channel, but stick with us for the latest reaction and analysis with our Tech Editor Mike Lowe.

If you're just tuning in, here's the skinny on what we expect.

1. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

2. The Pixel Watch 2

3. Android 14

4. Pixel Buds upgrade?

5. A super secret surprise maybe? (Fingers crossed)

The price is right?

Good afternoon (or morning, depending on where you are), Mike Lowe here, T3.com's Tech Editor, taking over the live blog reins with only 10 minutes to go until the big show kicks off. I trust my T3 colleagues have kept you suitably informed in the lead-up to 'The Big G' event.

I'm pretty stoked for this one: as I constantly bang on about, the Pixel 7 Pro was my phone of the year, so its inevitable replacement in the Pixel 8 Pro, is a device that I'm super keen to get my hands on – and hopefully this week, as it's thought Google's new hardware will go on sale next (the week commencing 9 October, although exactly when who knows).

There's a big question over pricing, though, as it looks as if regional variation is going to be significant this year. My colleague wrote about how the Pixel 8 price may surprise you – by apparently being much pricier in the UK/EU, but surprisingly the same year-on-year in the States. Well, it's only a matter of minutes until we find out for sure...

There's been a lot of chat about the Pixel 8's leaked colours and wallpapers already, but I'm staring at the pre-roll to the Made by Google YouTube page and, er, isn't that a yellow colourway?

Nobody's mentioned that before. Maybe it's a case? Maybe it's a white balance error? Either way, perhaps there will be a special edition colour that nobody's been expecting. And I think it looks pretty fresh. Maybe it's just my tired eyes...

And we're off...

Retro-synth beats out of the way – although who remembers the duck from Google IO 2023 back in May ? – and it's time to get into this Made by Google 2023 event...

Google is in on the rumours joke it seems: the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro leaked in full ahead of this event, so 'do you really think all those rumours are true?'. Well, let's see indeed...

Happy birthday

Google Pixel

Rick Osterloh, Google's SVP Devices & Services, takes to the stage. And, no, it's not his birthday (far as I know), it's been Google's 25th birthday just last month.

The first Pixel launched seven years ago, so that in itself is another birthday. That's over a quarter of the time since Google has been in existence.

Pixel 8 is the fastest growing smartphone brand in top markets, claims Osterloh, and that state of the art AI is needed to reach full potential.

Buds Pro and Fold getting updates

Google Pixel

The Pixel Buds Pro will be getting a major free upgrade to improve call quality, using Bluetooth Super Wide Band, and reducing latency.

The Pixel Fold will also gain dual-screen interpreter, which real-time converts language using the two screens, which sounds like a great feature to me.

Pixel Watch 2 official

Google Pixel

'Ello 'ello, it's the Pixel Watch 2! The second-gen wearable has been 'upgraded inside and out', with an upgraded processor, improved battery life (24 hours of use on a single charge, Google claims), with faster charging, and Google's WearOS4 software.

There are three new sensors: one, the heart-rate sensor is a fully-redesigned multi-path sensor with 10x the number of channels compared to the first-gen model; two, a skin-temperature sensor to measure during sleep; three, cEDA sensor (that's continuous electrodermal activity sensor) to help you manage stress.

Pixel Watch 2 is up for pre-order today, priced from $349, and will go on sale 'next week'. As I'd said earlier in the blog, exactly which day is to be confirmed.

Fitbit finally centre stage

Google Pixel

Google bought Fitbit over two-and-a-half years ago (it was finalised in the January of 2021) but since then things have been a little quieter while Google has integrated Fitbit into its line-up, including the Pixel Watch 2.

The Fitbit app was updated last month, in September, and Google is leveraging its use of AI in combination with presentation of fitness data. Well, it will be: as a beta version of Fitbit Labs will follow in 2024 for testers.

Pixel 8 & Pixel 8 Pro are here

Google Pixel

Well, here they are: the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are official. No surprises there, though. Claude Zellweger, Google's Director of Design, takes to the stage to show off the new phones.

A key part of the phones' designs come down to display: Google is calling it an Actua Display for the Pixel 8 and Super Actuu Display for the Pixel 8 Pro. Both are flat and both are much brighter – the Pro is the brightest of any Pixel ever, at 2400 nits.

Tensor G3 goes big on AI

Google Pixel

Both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro use the latest Google Tensor G3 chip too. No surprises there, but what does Google's latest silicon do?

The big story is that it's a lot more powerful, but not just in raw compute, in running machine learning (ML) models concurrently to bring more AI-heavy features.

That enables things like text-to-speech, with the phone able to read webpages aloud, or a spam filter which intervenes with potential spam calls to vet them with AI speech and queries.

Cameras get a boost

Google Pixel

The Pixel 8 cameras get upgrades too, a lot of which is built around advanced video, audio and AI features.

There's Audio Magic Eraser, which chops sounds into 'layers' so you can edit our audio based on distinctive layers to remove specific distractions.

Best Take is another new AI feature that takes multiple shots to create, as the name suggests, the best shot in a scene. But it goes deeper than that: it uses your recognised faces in your Photos app to source additional material for the AI algorithm to work with.

How do the new Pixel phones compare?

Google Pixel

So just how different are the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 ? And the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro ?

Well, follow those links above and all will be revealed! I was briefed in advance on the handsets and wrote the relevant comparisons for your reading pleasure.

Sneak peek: Assistant with Bard

Google Pixel

Google Assistant plus Google Bard you say? Yes indeed!

Personal help with reasoning and understanding of what matters to you. It's an artificial intelligence upgrade for your Google Assistant – although it's a future upgrade that's coming later down the line.

Google Assistant with Bard will release to 'select testers shortly', so don't expect this update for at least a few more months...

Generative AI is here

Google Pixel

Imagine a future where generative AI runs right on the phones we have with us throughout the day (i.e. not in the cloud)?

The Pixel 8 Pro is the first phone to run Google's foundational models directly on the device. The most advanced models have been selected, distilled and created for device.

Pixel 8 Pro can run gen AI machine learning models which leads directly to improved experiences, including a better Magic Eraser that will feature on Pixel 8 Pro – with more features to come.

For example, Recorder delivers live transcriptions already, but with on-device AI that can recap highlights with the press of a button. Nice. It'll also power smart replies in Gboard, to see quality smart reply suggestions. These will begin to roll out from December.

Pixel 8 Pro will also be the first smartphone to feature a custom image processing engine with AI, with Zoom Enhance the first feature, which can intelligently sharpen when pinching to zoom/crop.

Google Pixel

Here we go, just how much will these handsets cost? Well, the rumours were both right and wrong.

The Google Pixel 8 will be priced at $699 / £699.

The Google Pixel 8 Pro will be priced from $999 / £999.

That's a jump north of the previous-gen Pixel 7 products in all territories. Still, I think they both sound ace, especially the 8 Pro!

That's a wrap!

Google Pixel

That was a fairly quick hour from The Big G in revealing the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Buds Pro new features and colourways, and a raft of additional AI features, including Google Assistant with Bard coming in the future.

From myself and the T3 team thanks for reading, but do keep your eyes on the site in the coming days for Pixel 8 pre-order deals and, nearer to on-sale date, for in-hand device coverage of the new flagship phones. Ta ta for now!

Google has made this year’s hardware event official: October 4th

August 30, 2023 By Robby Payne View Comments

google presentation 4 october 2023

In a move that takes Google’s hardware events right back to the beginning of it all, we are now set to officially hear about the latest from Google on October 4th, 2023 in NYC. Like it was the very first year when Google introduced the world to the first Pixel phone and the Google Assistant, Google’s event once again returns to the 10/4 date for 2023. On that day, at 10AM EST, we’ll know all about what Google has in the pipeline for the rest of 2023 and into 2024.

google presentation 4 october 2023

Obviously, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to make an appearance, and the Pixel Watch 2 should be along for the ride as well. Apart from those devices, the only other real murmurs around Google-made hardware is on the Nest Wi-Fi front, but the rumored device we’re expecting isn’t exactly the type of thing we normally see at these more-elaborate events.

advertisement

For now, those devices will be the highlight and we’ll just have to wait and see if there’s anything Google’s managed to keep under wraps this time around. As a company, they’ve been pretty bad about keeping leaks at bay, but there’s not been a leaked render or insider image of the Pixel Watch 2 just yet, so I guess they’ve found a way to tighten things up a bit. And if that’s the case, maybe there’s a surprise or two awaiting us at the event. Either way, mark your calendars for October 4th at 10AM EST to watch live as the latest Google hardware is revealed to the world.

Here’s everything we expect from Google’s October 4 hardware event

google pixel 2 oct 4 2017 Sundar Pichai

We’ll see more than just a new Pixel phone at the show, though the phone will be the star. Google is making a serious effort in the smart home, virtual reality, and even computing. Here are all the big products we expect to see at Google’s October 4 hardware event.

Before we look at what we expect from the event, you might be wondering how you can catch it yourself. The event starts at 12 p.m. ET, and the best way to watch it is probably through the official YouTube page , or you can just check out the video below.

Of course, you can also check back on Digital Trends after the event to get all the news related to Google’s new hardware announcements.

  • This Google Pixel 8a leak just spoiled everything about the phone
  • When is my phone getting Android 14? Here’s everything we know
  • Google just announced Android 15. Here’s everything that’s new

Google Assistant coming to Chromebooks

As Google Assistant makes its way through the company’s products as well as outside devices , we wouldn’t be surprised to see its integration in our more Chrome devices. 9to5Google reported a clue found in Google’s Home app that shows that some Assistant apps will work with Chromebooks . If you look at the compatibility list of the Chat with your Assistant function, you’ll see a list that includes Chromebook. There’s even a Chromebook icon.

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

These phones will be the main event, representing the continuation of what has fast become one of the most-loved Android phone lineups. There are a ton of rumors about the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL and what they’ll have to offer, but current rumors suggest the update may be more incremental. For starters, it may offer the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which is Qualcomm’s latest chip, as well as an upgraded camera — though probably not a dual-sensor camera just yet.

The design of the phones will also be similar to the original Pixel phones — though instead of both being built by the same company, one will likely be built by HTC and the other by LG. Other spec leaks suggest the phone will offer the same 4GB of RAM , though with more storage options. It will also, of course, ship with the latest and greatest version of Android — Android Oreo — with a Google Pixel launcher running over the top.

Google Pixelbook

This one was a bit of a surprise when it hit the rumor mills last week thanks to Droid-Life , but a welcome addition to the show nonetheless. The Pixelbook serves somewhat as a follow-up to the Chromebook Pixel , which was launched in 2013.

The device will reportedly be a laptop with a 360-degree hinge that allows users to convert it into a tablet, and while we don’t have too many details about specs under the hood, speculation suggests it may feature Intel’s eighth-gen “U” chips. It will come in a few storage options according to the leaks: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

The laptop will most likely run Google’s Chrome OS, Google’s computer operating system aimed at using mostly web-based apps, and, more recently, compatible Android apps.

Unfortunately, it does not seem as though the computer will come cheap — it’ll start at $1,200 for the 128GB option, with prices ranging up to $1,750 for the 512GB option.

New Google Daydream View headset

Next up is a new Google Daydream View headset , which looks a lot like the original but comes in the same three colors as the Google Home Mini. According to the leak from Droid-Life , the headset is also around $20 more expensive than the original headset, coming in at $99, so hopefully it’ll sport a few extra features that will help make the Daydream experience a little more immersive. We don’t yet know what those features will be.

Google Home Mini

The Google Home is considered the best smart speaker for avid Android users, but it’s a little pricey, especially if you want Google’s smarts in every room. Well, thankfully it seems as though a new, more affordable Google Home is on its way — the Google Home Mini .

There are a few differences between the Google Home and Google Home Mini, according to Droid-Life , namely that the Mini is a much smaller device and hence likely offers a much smaller speaker. Still, at $49 each, it’s not a bad way to get Google Assistant into each room without having to buy a full-size Google Home speaker. The speaker will come in three colors: chalk, charcoal, and coral.

Google Home Max

While the other devices on this list are all but confirmed, this one is a little less certain. According to a report from 9to5Google , Google is working on a Google Home Max speaker that is designed to up against the likes of the Sonos Play:3 and will reportedly come with stereo speakers. It’s said that the device will be “premium” in terms of both functionality and design, but we don’t really know what that means yet.

Now, the report notes that we have no idea where the Google Home Max is in the development phase, so we may not see it at the October event. Instead, it could show up later in the year, or even at next year’s hardware event.

Update: Added information on Google Assistant making its way to Chromebooks.

Wear OS is getting a major update with Wear OS 4, and with it, Google's promising a big improvement to the overall smartwatch experience.

Announced today at Google I/O 2023, Wear OS 4 is adding a slew of new features on both a system level as well as an individual app level, meaning that smartwatch owners will be able to have a more streamlined and productive experience when using their devices.

We're expecting a lot of Google Pixel hardware in 2023, and according to one new report, one of Google's upcoming releases this year is the Pixel Watch 2.

A report from 9to5Google on May 5 cites a "source" that claims the Google Pixel Watch 2 will be released later this fall alongside the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Given Google's past Pixel smartphone releases, that means we'll likely see the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel 8 series debut in early October. We could see the Pixel Watch 2 next week

It's that time of year once again. The days are getting longer, the gray skies of winter are slowly fading away, and it's almost time for another Google I/O. While it's a given that we have a new I/O each year, Google always puts on a little show when announcing the date for the next one. And now, we officially know when Google I/O 2023 will take place.

The opening keynote for this year's I/O is taking place at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. In its email confirming the time and date, Google says, "Join a select audience to learn about Google’s latest innovations and developer solutions that help you work smarter and improve productivity." The opening keynote for I/O 2023 — where most of the big news and announcements are revealed — kicks off at 10 a.m. PT on May 10.

How to Watch Google I/O 2024, and What to Expect

The chirping of birds, the buzzing of bugs, the soft patter of Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s shoes as he bounds across the stage. The sounds of spring are here, so you know what that means: Google I/O is blooming.

Hot on the heels of Apple's iPad launch event last week, Google is going all out for its I/O developer conference on Tuesday, May 14. The event is taking place at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, just down the road from Google's headquarters. The keynote starts at 10 am PDT on Tuesday, and as usual, it will be livestreamed. Expect to hear and see updates about Android 15, Google search, the already announced Pixel 8A budget phone, and just an absolute torrent of news about the tech topic of the decade: artificial intelligence.

Watch This Space

Google’s keynote address, which should open with remarks from Pichai before the team rolls out all the new stuff, starts Tuesday, May 14, at 10 am PDT (1 pm EDT). You can watch it on Google’s I/O website or on Google’s YouTube channel . The videofeed is also embedded right here at the top of this page.

Tune in on our Google I/O live blog , where WIRED's team in attendance will be offering up-to-the-minute news updates and analysis of all the announcements.

Beyond the main keynote, there’s a subsequent developer-focused keynote starting at 1:30 pm PDT (4:30 EDT), viewable using the same links as the first stream.

AI All the Way Down

While Google's Gemini AI platform has experienced some growing pains , the company is still eager to put its generative AI offerings into any and all of its services: search, its photo and video tools, and its workspace suite of tools like Gmail and Google Docs. Google has also been slowly infusing AI features into its Google Assistant, so it will be interesting to see whether those new capabilities result in a more evolved form of natural-language voice assistant, or more of a true AI assistant that acts as an agent to perform tasks through all your connected services.

The company will, of course, show off features from its upcoming Android 15 mobile operating system, more in-car integration through Android Auto, and its smartwatch software Wear OS . Expect each of those to be newly endowed with all sorts of exciting (and maybe slightly creepy) AI-powered features.

Google’s AI announcements could also offer a hint at whatever news Apple might have in store for its WWDC developer conference keynote, which will take place June 10. Just a couple months ago, news trickled out that Apple may be working with Google to wrangle the latter's Gemini AI platform into iOS. Neither company has officially confirmed the news, and it’s not entirely clear what such an uneasy partnership between the two mobile heavyweights might look like on the iPhone. Google’s presumably AI-heavy keynote announcements could provide a hint at whatever is being cooked up on Apple devices.

Hard Where?

I/O is a software-focused event, but that hasn’t stopped Google from using the keynote to announce new hardware devices in the past. If the dearth of recent leaks about the company’s ambitions are any indicator, this year may be slimmer on the hardware front that I/Os past.

Generally speaking, Google is usually pretty unbothered about keeping its new gadgets under wraps before a big public event. Details about its upcoming Pixel 8A phone leaked a couple weeks ago, but Google officially announced the device last week. (The phone goes on sale on May 14, the same day as I/O.) Google will probably talk about its new Pixel on the block, and how it will utilize Android 15 and Gemini AI.

It’s always possible that another device might appear. Google announced its first Pixel Fold at I/O last year , and that’s probably due for an upgrade at some point, but we aren't expecting that to come this month. Google has also been keeping quiet about any new augmented reality tech it's working on, though it has shown concepts like Project Starline and language-translating smart glasses at past I/O events. We really expect that with so much attention being paid to artificial intelligence development, Google will likely make its AI announcements the star of the show.

Northern Sea Route monitoring expedition gives first results

northern marine 70 expedition yacht

Zoologists observed marine mammals and waterbirds in the Arctic.

#ARCTIC.   #SIBERIA.  THIS IS  TAIMYR . Center for Marine Research of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov announced the completion of the first stage of the expedition to observe marine fauna on the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

Zoologists observed marine mammals and sea and shorebirds from board the nuclear-powered container ship Sevmorput. In three weeks from St. Petersburg to the port of Vostochny in the Primorsky region, they sailed through 11 seas and encountered 429 marine mammals. Scientists note that most of them on the Northern Sea Route were ringed seals.

In addition, more than three thousand bird species were recorded, among which there were Arctic sustainable state bioindicator species – common eiders, glaucous gulls and kittiwakes.

In a few days, the Sevmorput ship will head back west towards St. Petersburg, and observations of marine mammals and seabirds will continue on it, reports the ARCTICunivers portal.

Previously, we told that Russian scientists discovered five rare species of birds in the Norilsk industrial region , some of which are included in the Red Book of Russia. Even in areas with industrial impact, whooper swan and bean swan were found. In Taimyr, we managed to photograph one of the rarest and most beautiful birds in Russia – the screeching duck .
