The Night We Met by Lord Huron: Lyrics Meaning and Interpretation
Lord Huron is an American Band. The band focuses on indie, rock and roll, and alternate music themes. The band is based out of Los Angeles, and shot to fame with the song “Ends of Earth”. The song was played in numerous scenes on different shows. Another song that gained popularity through the series is the track from their album “The Strange Trails” – the night we met. This song was also played in many tv series, rising to fame through the show “13 reasons why”. The story of Clay and Hannah was connected with the theme of the song.
What Does the Title Mean?
The night we met is a poetic phrase. It is like an opening of a dialogue and it talks of nostalgia. The title is quite apt for the song, as it is a reference to a time in the past. The night we met is the perfect title for the song as the entire premise of the song is based on this particular night when the singer and his lover met. The night ignited their love which eventually turned to flames. So the night plays an important role in the story. The story of love and loss is based on that night.
Verse 1 – What Does It Mean?
I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I’ve been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met
The song starts with a premise that is relatable to all. The first two lines combine the audience and set the theme for the song. Ben talks that he is not the only person who has been on this journey. This is very true as a lot of people have been on this path – the path of loving and losing. As Ben is trying to find a path again, likewise many heartbroken people try to find new journeys. The singer here talks of a night when he wants to go back. The night here is a reference to the time he spent with his loved one . He wants to go back to that time. He enjoyed that time, and, now that the time has passed, he wants to go back to it.
Verse 2 – What Does It Mean?
And then I can tell myself
What the hell I’m supposed to do
Not to ride along with you
Verse 2 moves along with the tone of verse 1. It is nostalgic and heartbroken. The love lost is eating the singer, and he is looking for a way out. He wants to go back to the initial days with his loved one. He says that he wants to revisit those days and warn his younger self to stay away from the loved one. This is not because he did not enjoy the times with the loved one, it is because of the pain that the singer is feeling now. The singer is alone and this heartbreak is too much to bear. So, he wants his younger self to avoid this path in order to escape this heartbreak. This is something that almost all of us – who have been through a break-up – felt deep inside. We wished that we never met the partners who fell apart. It is a natural tendency of humans to try to avoid pain and the feeling of loss. It is the same emotion that the singer is trying to convey here. He says that it all started that night, and he hopes to return to that night to change its course.
What Does the Chorus Mean?
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
I don’t know what I’m supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Straight for the castle
In the chorus, Ben talks of the beautiful yet tragic degression of love. The first two lines of the chorus are deeply felt by people who have slowly separated ways from their loved ones. If you have ever felt pain in the journey of love, you understand the meaning of these lines. Ben is saying how his loved one gradually moved away from him. The night when they met, he had all of his loved one . In the present day, the loved one is not there. He wants to go back to that night, although he is confused by it. He is terribly missing his loved one , as evident from the lyric “haunted by the ghost of you”. He is feeling his loved one around him, but unfortunately, they are not there. The chorus is deeply touching and heart-wrecking. It is picking on the wounds left by loving deeply.
Verse 3 – What Does It Mean?
When the night was full of terrors
And your eyes were filled with tears
When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met
Here, the singer is playing back the events of the night. He is sweetly reminiscing the actions that unfolded. He calls the night terrorful before he met his loved one , and he recalls tears in their eyes. These tears could have been a bridge for the communication between the two. The singer then recalls the touch of his loved one . Such memories often cause us more pain. We think of times when we were happy and carefree, and we miss those times. We miss our partner – the person who held us, supported us, and understood us. The singer here is also missing that person – he wants to go back to that night. The night, that now he, dislikes because of the heartbreak it caused.
The chorus repeats itself. The concluding chorus is more resonating with the people as they understand the agony of the singer now. He is deeply missing his loved one. There is no reason mentioned as to what happened between the two. Were there any fights or issues of right or wrong – such details are not mentioned? The focus is on the night when the singer met that person. The singer wants to re-write the story. He feels so much pain that he wants to erase the good parts as well. He wants to free himself from this cage of memories and love. He wants to go back to the night, and then never let that night happen. It is a bittersweet nature of love. We want to feel the love but sometimes the pain gets too much. The pain compels us to forget the love, the good parts. We feel that it is better to feel nothing, experience nothing than to feel the losing emotions.
The night we met is a powerful song. It perfectly captures the agony of a lover who is grieving his love. The song is also beautifully used in 13 reasons why wherein the song moves through the story of Clay and Hannah. The song focuses on one particular night when Clay fell in love with Hannah. With Hannah gone, Clay revisits that night many times and hopes to forget about it. He wants to change the course of the night but he can not do that. The singer is also on the same lines, and sadly he can not go back to that night – not to feel the emotions again or to change the night.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

@bucknut1998 <br /> I like your theory, it's actually well thought out. But I don't believe it started out bad. I believe he went into the realtionship great, but it then turned bad. He wants to travel back to the night they met so he can relive that perfect night. The night that made him want to be with her in the first place. But he doesn't just want to relive that night, he does want to stop himself from going down that road.<br /> <br /> "And then I can tell myself<br /> Not to ride along with you"<br /> <br /> I think this song is about, all in all, about how he met this girl one night and they went on. She ended up leaving him. Broken heart, he doesn't know what to do.<br /> <br /> "I've been searching for a trail to follow again<br /> Take me back to the night we met"<br /> <br /> He wants to go back to the night they met so he can see her when she did love him. When she had those feelings for him. When he had all of her. <br /> <br /> He is always haunted by the good memories they had. He remembers the great times they had together and realizes he will never have those again.<br /> <br /> "I don't know what I'm supposed to do<br /> Haunted by the ghost of you"<br /> <br /> Once he gets back to the night they met, after he see what he wants, he is going to, not warn himself, but tell himself not to "go down that road." He is going to tell him that it will only hurt him and that he should stay away.

It's a song about lost love and the heartache that comes with it. The relationship has come to an end and the singer seems to be regretful for even starting the relationship. After a break up people tend to understand how much they have invested into a relationship. When the singer says: 'I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you' it shows the gradual deterioration of the relationship. The singer gets flash backs, about how the relationship started and he seems so regretful to the point he wishes he could turn back time and prevent the whole relationship. We've all been there, when you have invested so much to someone and the whole thing ends, then you feel lost and nothing's the same again. The singer is still tortured by his partner's ghost and their memories together. The melody is so haunting but beautiful at the same time.

This is based off my reaction and thoughts as to what this song means with reference from "13 Reasons Why" and why this song was chosen to be the main song.
"Take me back to the night we met" (The singer wants to go back in time.)
"And then I can tell myself What the hell I'm supposed to do"
(He knows now just how the relationship/situation ended and knows what decisions he can make to save it.)
And then I can tell myself Not to ride along with you
(I like to think that when he says: "Not to ride along with you" he means not going with the flow or "riding along" but instead doing and saying the things he truly feels, now that he has seen the outcome.)
"I don't know what I'm supposed to do Haunted by the ghost of you"
(The singer still loves the one he lost. He does not know how to move on from the past that is set in stone, instead, he relives "The Night We Met".)

@dustpickle "(I like to think that when he says: "Not to ride along with you" he means not going with the flow or "riding along" but instead doing and saying the things he truly feels, now that he has seen the outcome.)" is good one.<br /> <br /> Otherwise, at one point Clay felt guilty, he wondered if he affected Hanna, if that was one of the reasons.<br />
@dustpickle <br /> In that point , if he comes back, maybe he would stay away from her to not hurt her...<br /> But the problem was not Stay with her and as you said doing and saying the things he truly feels
This song is about having underlying problems while you are falling in love. Doesn't sound too healthy, does it?
A traveler who has not repaid his debts is someone who has taken something they involving the person they love. Perhaps they led them on or had other issues going on in their life. The speaker is implying that the person opposite them has as well. The song is coming from after this has happened--they're looking for their muse and this is why they want to go back to the "night they met," or at least the night before all of this happened.
The "not to ride along with you" goes back to the traveling or exposition of the song. This part resonates with me personally because I literally got a ride from this person, ironically. The speaker regrets what happened on this night because they did not want to fall for this person. They lost them, for whatever reason (perhaps they were going through their own problems), and they cannot forget them.
That night was full of "terrors" because of impending romance--it can be dangerous. Life is already terrifying and depressing enough without romance involved. We all have our inner demons.
Overall, the speaker does not know how to get over them and the only way to resolve the situation would be to never talk to them the night they met. This is because they have fallen very deeply. It's hard to believe that this song was not written specifically for the Netflix series because it fits perfectly with the flashback and what Clay was feeling. I'm also surprised this song was not written for my life because, wow the relevancy.
Edit: "*...someone who has taken something from or involving the person they have feelings for."
@Italia8989 great interpretation!!!
For whatever reasons, they are haunted by their relationship. Since they don't want to be haunted, they wish they never got into the relationship in the first place. If they could go back in time he would go out of his way to not invest in the relationship. He'd rather have chosen another path.
When I first heard, and re-listened to, this song from “13 Reasons Why”, I was focused on the loss felt by the characters in the show, and internalizing my own grief over my fathers recent death.
I interpreted this song as missing someone after they are gone. Wanting to go back to the day you first met them in order to relive that moment, and all the moments after with them.
“And then I can tell myself Not to ride along with you” I must admit I have contemplated suicide so that I can see him again - these lyrics loosely ‘tell me’ not to.
“When the night was full of terrors And your eyes were filled with tears When you had not touched me yet” This could reflect my birth, right before my dad first held me.
The rest is just not knowing what do to with him gone.
Reading the other comments and talking about the song with others, it’s clear that it’s originally about someone who never wanted to get together with a now ex.

@laurenturow I can relate to your point of view. A year ago I lost my grandmother who was like a mother/father to me. It gets easier, think of all the things he wanted you to live and use it as motivation.
@laurenturow @notonlyme perhaps the enduring message of the song is that with these tragedies we need to keep moving on ... because unfortunately we can not be taken back to the night we met to avoid the pain.
@laurenturow whatever made you think that your suicide would reunite you with your father??!! unless you felt that he's gone to eternal damnation? 'cause that's where you'd end up if you took that step. Please seek some help, girl. <br /> You WILL reunite one day, as long as you choose the path you were meant to follow. <br /> Let's all pray to give Lauren the strength to do this.
@bigmutt I suppose it would depend on their beliefs ... and what exactly reunite would mean to them.
@laurenturow Thank you for sharing. I recently lost my ex who is also the father of my beautiful twin 5 year old boys. I heard this song on the radio, and started to seek out the lyrics, trying to see if the writer had also lost someone, and this song was sharing his heartache... After reading most responses, I agree, it's most likely about a break-up. But it was comforting, to see that you felt the same meanings that came to me originally too. <br /> <br /> It's interesting, the comfort that comes when someone else has felt your same pain, and is going through similar heartache that you are. I'm so sorry you lost your father, loss of someone so close to you is devastating. A song that has really been a source of comfort and acceptance, that I hope might bring you some comfort as well is called "Fly Away" by thefatrat (don't get thrown off by the band name :) ). <br /> <br /> Thanks again for sharing :)
I really like your song it's really good xx
No matter the pain, you should never want to forget or change meeting a person who was everything! I stumbled upon this song and I would ever ever change meeting someone.. it was a the ride that changed my life with a dance sipping the "The Beast!" I only wish to change losing someone I never dreamt possible..
@jennylynn2 That's so poignant !!<br /> God bless you for your courage. <br /> (although I am curious about what is "the beast".)
@jennylynn2 Old Milwaukee's best (it's a beer)
In uni I feel in love with a girl I couldn't be with. Sometimes I wished we had never met, as it would have made my life so much easier ... unrequited love.
This song reminds me of this period in my life. I use to feel that she haunted me in my dreams ... and she ruined my relationships at that time because none could compare to her (in essence as the song says "Haunted by the ghost of you"). She was not my partner, but I couldn't love another with her around (or even after we'd had an unceremonious break in our friendship ... as we both loved one another, but we couldn't act upon it).
Love is a difficult thing ... we can not chose to love or be loved. Sometimes it just happens, and we sometimes may wish to change the past to avoid the heartache if that loves fail. But ultimately we grow from each and every one of these experiences (no matter how hard or gut wrenching it was at the time ... we do move on ...... to a degree)

@sokorny <br /> <br /> I'm confused with your thoughts. You said, you fell in love with a girl in uni.. University right?<br /> <br /> You guys had an unceremonious break in your friendship ... as you both loved one another and couldn't act upon it? <br /> <br /> How come it's unrequited love?<br /> <br /> Do you really feel that both of you have moved on? <br /> <br /> I do hope you guys talk so you know if it's time to really move on or if there's a chance to act upon the love that you guys have for one another.
@purple9710 well considering it was about 15 years ago I think we've both moved on. It was a complicated relationship, started as friendship turned to more for me but she was with my best friend. Then he left for a year to go travelling, so we got even closer but neither of ever acted on it. One of those ... what could have been??
@sokorny <br /> <br /> I guess you guys really moved on because it's been 15 years. <br /> <br /> It's just sad to hear that the girl you were in loved with and who was also in love with you was already committed to your best friend. It was surely a difficult situation for her because she was already in a relationship but she was in love with you. The situation was really complicated.<br /> <br /> If I was the girl, I would have been honest with your best friend that I have feelings for his best friend. That you guys loved one another. It's like betraying her boyfriend while he was travelling for a year and you and her got closer. Even though you didn't act upon it. The fact that you guys got emotionally closer or physically closer, it was really a dangerous time.<br /> <br /> If I was your best friend, I would appreciate if you guys were honest. Who knows, he might let go of his girlfriend if he really knew that you guys really loved one another. Possibly he broke up with her and he let her go and told her to be together with you instead. He would be happy to see you guys together knowing that you guys loved one another.<br /> <br /> On the other hand, I respect why you didn't act upon the love you had for each other. You guys didn't want to hurt your best friend's feeling.<br /> <br /> On second thought, it's better to hurt someone and be honest. It's better to let go of a loved one knowing that he or she is in love with someone else. It's better to give up the relationship knowing that the other person is not committed. It's better to release the loved one learning that he or she is not happy with you and he or she is happy with someone else.<br /> <br /> I believe that's the risk of having a relationship like boyfriend or girlfriend, if it didn't work out. The only thing to do is to break up. If both are not committed, honest, and really in love with each other, it's time to<br /> let go. Time to really move on. Not all relationships find their one true love and it's up to the individuals if they really see themselves together until they are old and gray or accept that the one, two, or third time didn't work out. As the saying goes, there is nothing permanent in this world except change. <br /> <br /> But some are blessed to be with their one true love. Well, that's another situation.<br /> <br /> Anyway, I guess you guys have really moved on. Although, it's really a what could have been.. <br /> <br /> Thank you for explaining.<br /> <br /> Best Wishes. Bye.<br /> <br />
@sokorny @purple9710 Hey, kids: life's experiences may teach you that you CAN actually choose to love. The "falling" aspect often is an initial component but ultimately you do have more control than you might think. If you choose to exercise it, that is.
@sokorny Hey bigmutt! I'm not a kid. I'm already 42. I believe sokorny is not a kid as well. You are correct, we CAN actually choose to love. Although, I also agree with sokorny we can not to chose to love or be loved. With regards to "falling", I also agree with your point of view. But sometimes, we do not need to exercise it, it comes naturally. <br /> Anyway, thank you for your input.
@sokorny haha. I don't mean to laugh but I did.
To me, the song is about a love that began with some form of heartbreak, the love between the two, and eventual decline of the relationship.
I am not the only traveller, who has not repaid his debts - this says to me, that looking back on the relationship, he feels he was not the only one at fault. Searching for a trail to follow again - having trouble finding a new path after the breakdown of the relationship Take me back to the night we met - shows not so much regret about the relationship as blatant as it sounds, but instead more metaphoric as he does not want to feel the pain he is feeling post breakup Being ‘haunted by the ghost of you, is again referring to having trouble moving on from the past, as opposed to the more literal ‘death’ associated with 13 reasons why.
Still, such a fitting song for the series, and the combination of discovering this song, and binge watching the full series in about 2-3 days, sent me into a horrible depression for weeks. Thoughts of past relationships, family I don’t speak to enough... etc. Both excellent pieces of their respective art forms to have that effect on me, not being an emotional or previously depressed person.

Song Meanings and Facts
Lord Huron’s The Night We Met Lyrics Meaning
by SMF · Published July 25, 2020 · Updated October 19, 2023
Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met” is a very emotional song that has a principal theme of lost love, regrets and intense longing.
The song’s addressee is apparently someone who was once close to Ben Schneider (the narrator). From the lyrics, it’s very likely that said addressee was his lover. They apparently had good times together. However, something bad happened and instantaneously caused the death of their union.
It is not lavishly made clear in the song what happened for them to cease to be together. However, what is copiously clear is that the narrator is presently downcast. He now wishes he could go back to the night he and his former lover met. Again it is not made abundantly clear why he wants to journey back to that time. What’s so special about that time? Does he want to go back to repair the relationship?
“Take me back to the night we met”
On the surface, it looks as though all he craves for is an opportunity to go back into time and undo what happened to tear them apart. The lyrics read as if he feels responsible for making the addressee slip away from his world. Could this be the reason why in the chorus, he talks about being “ haunted by the ghost of ” the addressee?
Ben Schneider talks about “The Night We Met”
We can find the answers to the questions raised above in Ben Schneider’s own explanation of the meaning of “The Night We Met”.
In an interview with Gigwise , Lord Huron in his own words explained the meaning of this song. According to him, the song is about the regret you feel after the demise of a romantic relationship. And despite you and your ex actually enjoying “many wonderful things together”, you still regret venturing into that relationship because at the end of the day, it wasn’t worth it.
So you now find yourself at a point where you wish you could turn back the hands of time and not start the relationship in the first place. Why? Simply because it was so not worth it!
This is undoubtedly a really good song from Lord Huron, and it reminds us a lot about two classic songs, namely:
- “Unchained Melody”
- R. Kelly’s “ If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time ”
It shares the same theme with the latter song. Furthermore, there’s a slight similarity to the Kelly classic in terms of the sound.
Echoes of Past Love: A Nostalgic Reverie
To me, it’s a surreal feeling when someone who once filled your life with countless memories becomes a memory themselves.
The song takes on a whole new depth when you find yourself standing alone in the very place where you and that special someone first crossed paths. The weight of nostalgia and emotion is just overwhelming.

It is the fourteenth and final track on the track listing of “Strange Trails”. “Strange Tails” is Lord Huron’s official second studio album. The band released the entire project in the United Kingdom and the United States on 7th and 8th April, 2015, respectively. The album was not only critically acclaimed by also successful from a commercial standpoint. As such, it charted in many a country, including America and Britain.
As for “The Night We Met”, it was the most successful song on the aforementioned album. It charted impressively in the music charts in various destinations. For example, it was a top 10 hit in two Billboard charts. One such chart was the “Alternative Airplay” chart, where it reached number 7. It also made it onto the Hot 100 charts itself.
By 2020, the song had sold over 2 million units in America. Owing to this, it holds a multiple platinum status in the United States. And as of the same year in question, the song had been streamed more than half a billion times.
The song actually met with the aforementioned successes after it was featured in Netflix’s famous teen drama series titled “ 13 Reasons Why “. This was about two years after it was initially released.
Who wrote “The Night We Met”?
This super successful track was penned by Ben Schneider. Schneider, who founded Lord Huron , also produced it. As for Lord Huron, they are an indie band from the United States fronted by Schneider. So far, “The Night We Met” has been the band’s most successful material.
Does Phoebe Bridgers feature on “The Night We Met”?
No and yes. American singer Phoebe Bridgers doesn’t feature on the original version of this song. But Lord Huron released a remix of this song in 2018. It is that version that Bridgers is featured on. That version was also quite successful (but nowhere close to the original’s success). For example, it was unable to enter the Hot 100. However, it charted impressively on at least one official Billboard’s chart. It also entered the official singles chart in France.
How I discovered “The Night We Met”
A few years ago, while I was engrossed in the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why”, I came across this song that completely captivated me. The way it gently underscored a particular scene made that moment stand out; it was as if the song breathed life into the narrative, making it all the more poignant and impactful.
Since that day, I’ve found myself irresistibly drawn to this track, playing it nearly every day. Every time I listen, it evokes this powerful wave of nostalgia, transporting me back to that scene and even deeper, into personal memories that are both vivid and euphoric. It’s as if the song acts as a time machine, allowing me to vividly relive those cherished moments.
“13 Reasons Why” is a gripping Netflix series that delves into the complexities of teen life, love, and the tragic consequences of bullying and mental health struggles. The inclusion of Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met” in it added an evocative layer to the show’s emotional tapestry.
The hauntingly beautiful melody and poignant lyrics of the song resonated perfectly with the series’ themes, amplifying the raw, heartfelt emotions experienced by the characters and the audience alike. Its placement in pivotal scenes created unforgettable moments, making the narrative more profound and deeply affecting.
Let’s Talk about Lord Huron
Lord Huron is an American indie folk band based in Los Angeles. The group was formed in 2010 by Ben Schneider, originally a solo project which evolved into a full-fledged band that includes musicians Tom Renaud, Miguel Briseño, and Mark Barry. Lord Huron is known for its immersive, narrative-driven music that blends the rustic appeal of folk, the sweeping instrumentals of cinematic soundscapes, and the rhythmic propulsion of rock and roll.
Their discography includes several albums such as “Lonesome Dreams” (2012), “Strange Trails” (2015), “Vide Noir” (2018), and “Long Lost” (2021). Lord Huron is widely recognized for their lush, multi-instrumental soundscapes and evocative, storytelling lyricism. Songs like “The Night We Met,” “Ends of the Earth,” and “Time to Run” have garnered considerable attention and have been featured in various films, commercials, and TV shows, thereby establishing a substantial fanbase for the band.
Their music often explores themes of love, longing, and existential questioning, frequently encapsulated within mythical and nature-oriented imagery. Lord Huron tends to weave a rich tapestry of stories and characters throughout their albums, creating immersive worlds in which their songs reside. Always exploring and unfolding new chapters in their musical journey, Lord Huron continues to captivate listeners with their melodic, adventurous, and often nostalgic sound.

I would like to know who wrote this article. It’s extremely well written with better than most use of word structure
Yes ..kudos to the Writer of this Article for creating such an exquisite piece of writing displaying the beauty and elegance of words…come on now….who is SMF? We wanna kno the writers name 🙂
Hi Malini, thanks for your beautiful comment. The writer of the article is called Kojo Enoch.
Did you mean Ben Schneider in the beginning and not Rob Schneider??
Yes, Kristi Marie, we meant Ben Schneider. Thank you for bringing that to our attention.
I feel like this analysis is well written, but I feel like it misses the meaning of the song in some major ways. This is definitely a song about a person he loves; a broken love song if you will. It is definitely love lost, regrets, and longing. You were spot on there, but it doesn’t seem to be an instantaneous falling out from one event. I have felt the words “I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you” and I can say definitively that this love went cold over time which is worse because a growing, festering bitterness or hurt only gets more noxious and painful. “All and then most. . Some and now none. . .”
Is a drawn out timeline of having all of the person and things being great, then they gradually drift apart and things get worse, hence the painful tone. Also, I don’t get the sense that he wishes he could go back a d undo a certain event that caused their demise, but rather that he wishes to go back and undo ever having gotten into relationship at all to spare himself the hurt that it has caused. It would likely say something regarding the night of the fateful event rather than the night they met altogether, I feel, if so. Rather he wishes to go back to the beginning and undo ever getting into the car and riding along with him/her. Before there was any physical history, before there was any emotional history, so that he could tell himself what he was supposed to do rather than going into it at all.
I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree with this interpretation. While the gradual loss is obvious, to me this screams of a story of Dementia, with the loved one slowly losing themselves, and thus the singer watching them slowly fade away. “Haunted by the ghost of you” especially rings true as their loved one is still there, but just a ghost of themselves. And the narrator wishes to return to the night they met to see their partner’s former self again.
I interpret this song as a loss of love over years. Feeling somewhat at fault, he is haunted by the ghost of who they were. Maybe by photos, mutual friends or just by proximity.
Definitely, was the magic love, he lost somehow and he is looking back, maybe understanding, he lost the One., and wish to act differently , starting form the very moment the physically came across… Gorgeous love song, it transfer the passion and pain form Ben Sch. To me as listener.
Nailed it. At least for me. Music being art can be interpreted so many different ways by the listener, viewer, etc. Even the artist themselves can come out and say ‘I meant it this way.’ But in conversation with anyone but the artist themselves, it’s all rather subjective. For me, it’s a song about regret. To go back and say don’t travel down this road…it’s ultimately only heartache at the end.
Wow…this is exactly how I interpreted this song—maybe it’s due to the fact that I’m going through this exact same thing…
Best! I felt it all the same way!
I agree with this interpretation
i agree i relate to this song very much
Yes anonymous …your analysis/interpretation makes a lot of sense. Well done
I think: It’s both. Slow burn, either dementia (good point, I hadn’t thought of this) or just them growing apart during a tumultuous and dragged out break-up period. Going back to the night they met could be to either prevent himself from getting involved, or to have a chance to do things differently to re-write their story.
It makes me feel that this was an unintentional love, that keeps haunting a person; almost like being raped.
I totally agree with that, exactly how interpret the song!???????????? Maybe because, I totally had/have that vibe with an x for the past 14 years. It’s like a slow, but blazing burn all inn one.
My take: the pain of lost love is worse than the pain of never having loved in the first place. The narrator yearns to go back in time to warn their younger self not to get involved with this lover (“not ride along with you”) – to avoid their first meeting. The narrator wishes they could “unmeet” this person, as whatever went wrong scarred them for life. Any happy memories are overwhelmed by the haunting loss of the relationship.
I agree with the analysis that that the breakup was a painful slow drifting apart, I think that’s pretty evident by the lyrics, “I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you. I interpret the lyrics “take me back to the night we met” as take me back to when I not only wasn’t heartbroken, but take me back to when I was content and happy without you.
I, based on life experience, interpret this song as the night “we” met as the encounter between mother and child after an arduous birth. For years I pictured an emotional scene of the child dying; just now I hear the song as a mother admitting that she wishes to go back to the moment that both she and her child (me) were at their most innocent–the night they met. For me it’s the words I wish my mother had told me in life.
I recently lost my adult son on May 27th, 2022, and I had this song as one of the songs on his photo slideshow. He was born at 7:34 pm and after losing him, I just wanted to go back to the night I first gave birth to him so I could hold him again. I miss every second with him and the pain is unbearable.
Please find ‘helping parents heal’
okay, so based on my experiences personally i interpret this song as their/your loved one dying due to $u!c!d3, when he says, ” I had all and then most of you, some nd now none of you.” I interpret it as your/their love one drifting away due to depression and/or jut personal battles and them not being able to open up. This causes you/them to not understand until they are gone which is when you notice everything.
This song takes me back to the night I had so many fears of my darkness and the only light and warmth that I felt and see was God. He came to remind me of who I am. During that moment I was so lost and the only love that woke me up was God’s love. So since the night that we met, i have came out of my darkness and shadows. He saved me. That’s how I took the song. Either I was going to take a ride with him or not I decided to ride along with and decided to live for another day. So I did wished that everything before the night I met him I can take back and undo, and relive my life without hurt, pain, and heartaches.
I can relate to this because my husband and I met 40 years ago and we were both just out of relationships and were devasted. We were both diagnosed with bi-polar (mental illness) and several other mental health issues. We knew we were each others soulmates. It took 35 years to be able to realize our deep love through finally being able to reach into our souls and speak of our love and what it meant to each of us. Looking back the night we met was painful at the time, however, it was the best thing that ever happened to us. We had some of each other but not the whole of each other. Our break up will be the death of each other. We are making up for lost time and our future together.
he’s not talking about undoing what happened to tear them apart, he’s talking about going back in time and stopping himself from ever meeting her.
Because she is dead now. She died of an overdose. The article is well written but misses on the meaning in many ways.
I absolutely love this song! Can relate a lot to it 🙁
Here is what the song is about in the artists’ own words, the article writer almost got it right.

Here's the Beautiful Song Always Playing at the Dances in 13 Reasons Why
Updated on 5/26/2018 at 6:35 PM
The 13 Reasons Why 's season one soundtrack is a brilliant collection of songs, but there's one track in particular that will haunt you. It plays several times when the show flashes back to the school dance, as Clay ( Dylan Minnette ) and Hannah (Katherine Langford) dance together. It's called "The Night We Met," and it's off Lord Huron's 2015 album Strange Trails .
The melody is beautifully melancholic, and it's even more poignant when you consider the lyrics: "Take me back to the night we met / I don't know what I'm supposed to do / Haunted by the ghost of you / Take me back to the night we met / When the night was full of terrors / And your eyes were filled with tears / When you had not touched me yet / Take me back to the night we met."
The song plays again in the final episode of season two. After enduring a harrowing trial of ups and downs over the course of the season, the gang — Clay, Jessica, Tony, Courtney, Zach, Justin, and Alex — wrap things up by going to their high school's dance. As luck would have it, the DJ (who isn't Tony this time around) starts playing "the Night We Met" and it has an immediate effect on Clay. He tearfully wanders out into the middle of the dance floor, and is soon joined in a big group hug by the rest of his friends.
Here's the track if you want to listen to it yourself:

Here's Why Hannah Was A Ghost In "13 Reasons Why" Season 2
19 May 2018, 16:33
By Nicky Idika
TV ghost? Audiences were shook to say the least.
13 Reasons Why season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix. In this second season, viewers get to see the different sides of Hannah and receive more context about what her life at Liberty High was like.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
Early on in the series, we learn that our main protagonist Clay is not coping well with Hannah's death as he begins to see her as a ghostly apparition.
Based on years of excessive television watching, it's clear this is the ol' ghostly manifestation as a result of unresolved issues trope. A classic.
The ghost of Hannah Baker is obviously not an actual ghost and 13 Reasons Why writers stick pretty closely to the rules of hallucination ghosts. Namely, the fact that Ghost Hannah never tells Clay things he doesn't already know. That's key. Because the ghost is merely a manifestation, she only knows what Clay knows--our actual understanding of Hannah's story is furthered by what the other characters describe. Not Hannah's ghost.
Hallucination ghost Hannah is an apparatus for Clay to work out his issues with the trial, but fans aren't entirely sold.
ok but seriously hannah baker coming back as a fucking ghost in 13 reasons why season 2 is genuinely the laziest piece of writing ive ever seen its so fucking dumb — ethan no.4 (@ethansjamez) May 19, 2018

So, why was Hannah a ghost in 13 Reasons Why season 2?
Throughout the first season, Hannah is in Clay's head. With the tapes, she is able to penetrate his psyche, telling her everything she wants him to know about her story.
In the second season, Hannah is still in Clay's head, but as a semi-corporeal entity that helps him work through some of his complicated issues.
Is it ham fisted? VERY. Does it serve a specific purpose both visually and from a storytelling standpoint? Yes. We now understand that Clay, despite that unshakable savior complex of his, still has a lot to work through when it comes to his grief.
What do you guys think? Is Ghost Hannah a "no" from you or do you like the 13 Reasons Why writers' take on her this season?
