A worthy successor to the iconic code 0 that made black pepper famous, this elegant dayboat, with her neo-classical silhouette, adopts the aesthetic codes of her predecessor with a new bias: she had to be different; she had to dare a little renewal, without of course transgressing the family spirit….

Black Pepper’s Code 0 – tested and reviewed

Displaying customary weakness, sam jefferson is seduced by the allure of the black pepper’s code 0 daysailer.

code 0 black pepper yachts

The novelist George Sand once wrote that vanity was the quicksand of reason and I for one have no particular reason to disagree. What I will add is that somewhere amid that quicksand yachts must lurk. Unless you actually live aboard your yacht, it is intrinsically not a useful item. I mean, if you want to get to Cherbourg, the most sensible method is to get on a ferry. Reason doesn’t come into buying a yacht.

Now. I realise that sounds a bit negative. But it isn’t. What it means is that cruising yachts occupy a far more noble purpose. They stand for more than just utilitarian requirements of getting us from A to B; things that are equally important to human happiness; freedom, escape, hope even and, yes, vanity.

code 0 black pepper yachts

All of this rambling brings me to Black Pepper’s Code 0 yacht. Here we have weekender so stylish, it could make Kate Moss look plain. That didn’t really happen by the way. I made it up just in case anyone was wondering.

Anyway, this is a yacht that appeals effortlessly to the vanity of sailors everywhere. No one wilfully chooses to have an ugly yacht – you want to own something that people coo at admiringly when you arrive in port. The Code 0 is an expression of this vainglorious human desire.

Added spice

Despite this emphasis on style, this is a practical weekender: she features modest accommodation, a set up that is easy to handle short-handed, a diesel inboard and the option of a lifting keel. She’s 33ft long, with a modest 8ft 8in beam so wetted surface area is kept low. The beam is carried well aft however and the stern terminates with an odd combination of aft raked transom that is then raked forward at deck level. It sounds odd, but it works. There’s a soft turn to the bilge with a modest amount of rocker making for a relatively narrow, shallow hull. Freeboard is low and the hull is constructed out of post baked carbon epoxy foam sandwich which sounds delicious.

code 0 black pepper yachts

This construction method keeps the weight down to an incredibly light 1,850kg. She’s got twin rudders and there is an option for a swing keel that gives her a draught of 0.7m with it raised as compared with 2.2m with it lowered. She comes with the option of a racing rig or a cruising option which is 30m 2 smaller. Whichever option you choose, the rig is carbon and the standard sail wardrobe comprises of a mainsail, self tacking jib, Code 0 and asymmetric spinnaker set on a retractable carbon sprit.

So she’s a thoroughly modern little yacht and undoubtedly sporty. Yet step aboard and she fairly oozes class. There’s nothing brash or boy racer here, she’s beautifully finished in teak and rich mahogany with the deck line only broken slightly by the low dog house which with its narrow slit windows which are both stylish yet retro.

code 0 black pepper yachts

Although the Code 0 is a 33ft yacht, much of that length is taken up by the aft deck, with the tiller and mainsheet located well forward. This means there is a large sunbathing space aft when at anchor and also allows for two lazarette lockers with decent amounts of storage. The mainsheet is also located back here, tucked out of harm’s way aft of the rudder stock yet within easy reach of the helm. Aside from the jib sheets, all other sail controls are led underneath the coach roof to a single Harken winch on its own dedicated pedestal with the clutches recessed into the deck head which is a neat arrangement. In the centre of the cockpit is a cowl for the 14hp single cylinder inboard diesel that also doubles as a sort of small drinks table. It all adds up to an uncluttered space and an easily handled yacht – with the self tacker a real help.

Head down below and the air of class is somewhat dispelled it has to be admitted. It’s a similar sensation to admiring the sleek lines of a Ferrari from the outside and then clambering into the driver’s seat in a rather undignified manner and realising that in reality the car is dark, cramped and if you spend too much time in here your knees are likely to start to ache – particularly if you have reached that point in mid-life when owning a Ferrari seems like a good idea. The Code 0 is very much a semi custom yacht and you can fit out the interior with all manner of creature comforts, but you have to bear in mind that this is an extremely lightweight vessel and that every ounce of weight you add will affect her speed. Ultimately, this is a smart daysailer that you can weekend on if you’re up for a bit of glamping. It is never going to have anything other than sitting headroom. That said, she does have a reasonably proportioned vee berth forward and a pilot berth aft and there is ample storage potential.

code 0 black pepper yachts

Classy performer

Sailing conditions for the test consisted of a modest chop which was being generated by a 12kn breeze blowing down Southampton Water and wafting the sweet aroma of crude oil from the refineries of Marchwood. I felt in my heart this was not the true domain of the Code 0 and in my mind I conjured up the hills of Provence plunging down onto a glistening sheet of water, the breeze rich with the sweet aroma of pines and alive with the scream of cicadas. Then the Code 0 heeled to the breeze and suddenly I no longer needed to escape, for something life affirming was occurring right there.

The Code 0 sails beautifully: fast, agile, responsive and as involved as sailing a dinghy. She enjoys being sailed over on her ear but her twin rudders ensure that she has more than enough grip. No question, this is a wet boat, but you do feel nice and secure in the cockpit.

The benefit of the low freeboard is that you are also closer to the action and that is exhilarating. Hard on the wind, with apparent wind angles in the high 30s, we were hitting speeds of over six knots and as soon as we eased the sheets, we rapidly hit seven plus. Off the wind, the feather light displacement mean this is a yacht that is eager to plane early.

Sam’s verdict

On first viewing it might be easy to label this yacht a sort of Joey Essex of the sailing world. Looks pretty but ultimately so impractical it probably can’t tie it’s own shoelace. Yet closer inspection reveals this yacht to be an accomplished performer with all sorts of practical touches: an easily handled rig, inboard engine and the option of a lifting keel. These are features that make for a really versatile and truly fun weekender.

She’s never going to be anything else but functional down below, but by the end of a day’s sailing you’ll be so played out by the sheer joy of an exhilarating sail that you’ll forgive her that. Or preferably book into a well appointed hotel – hopefully with a view down to the water so you can spend the evening admiring the lines of your beautiful yacht.

The Spec Length: 31ft 4in (9.6m) Breadth: 8ft 8in ( 2.7m) Draught: 2ft 9in (0.9m) 7ft 5in (2.3m) Displacement: 1,850kg (4,078lb) Sail area: 130m 2   (426sq ft) Engine 14hp diesel inboard

Boat Test: Black Pepper Code 0

code 0 black pepper yachts

Sam Jefferson casts a covetous glance in the direction of the Code 0 a stylish day sailer from Black Pepper Yachts.

code 0 black pepper yachts

Concept 9/10

Which brings me to the concept behind the Code 0. She has two clear aims. First and foremost to look good and secondly to sail fast. Beyond that, forget it. There’s no standing headroom, low guard rails and with that low freeboard, she’s going to be a wet boat. But I ask you, what do you want a yacht for? Transporting bulk cargo? Drinking Bisto in the drizzle off Cowes? Forget it. You want to look good and go fast? Here’s your boat.

The concept is not entirely original but it’s highly laudable. Tofinou, Saffier, Brenta, Huzar and Wally all have variations on this theme of a fast daysailer with modern design characteristics and classic, retro styling. It’s the hipster’s approach to sailing, the deconstructed coffee of the yachting world. Yet beneath that shiny veneer there is some real substance. She’s designed by Romaric Neyhousser, best known for his work with Verdier on yachts such as Comanche. He worked on the Code 0’s design with Yves Parlier who needs no further introduction here. The design has actually been around for a couple of years now, but is now available in the UK. She made her debut at the Southampton Boat Show September 2016.

She’s 33ft long, with a modest 8ft 8in beam so wetted surface area is kept low. The beam is carried well aft however, and the stern terminates with an odd combination of aft raked transom that is then raked forward at deck level. It sounds odd, but it works.

Freeboard is low and and the hull is constructed of post-baked carbon epoxy foam sandwich, which sounds impressive, and is an elaborate method of building that ensures an extremely light, strong, stiff boat. This construction method keeps the weight down to 1,850kg, which compares very favourably with 2,264kg for the J/88. She’s got twin rudders and there is an option for a swing keel that gives her a draft of 0.7m with it raised as compared with 2.2m when lowered. The rig is carbon fibre and the standard sail wardrobe comprises of a mainsail, self-tacking jib, Code 0 and asymmetric spinnaker set on a retractable carbon bowsprit. The sail area is generous, with the main doing most off the work on the wind.

On deck she is beautifully finished in teak and mahogany with the decline only broken slightly by the low dog house, which with its narrow slit windows looks very stylish although this design feature does divide opinion. The integrated toe rail is smart and keeps the lines clean, while the low guard rail does not spoil the look of the yacht. Although the Code 0 is 33ft, much of that length is taken up with the aft deck which, with the tiller and mainsheet located well forward, allows for a large open space aft. This is decked over to give the cockpit an enclosed feel and features two lazarette lockers with decent amounts of storage. There is no traveller on the mainsheet, which is fixed to a u-bolt just aft of the rudder stock. All the main sail controls are led underneath the coach roof to a single Harken winch on its own dedicated pedestal. The clutches are recessed into the deck head, which is a neat arrangement. The jib sheets are led to a pair of secondary winches located well outboard and the self tacking jib means you can achieve an absurdly tight sheeting angle.

The boat features a simple, uncomplicated and uncluttered set up and the big aft deck means the mainsheet doesn’t end up getting snarled up with the tiller in the cockpit.

From a styling point of view it all looked very pretty and my only real issue was that the narrow cockpit coamings which, although very useful at deflecting spray, slightly interfered with the helming position. This is a yacht that is going to spend a fair amount of time on her ear and you want to be sitting outboard. I found that I was often in a slightly tenuous position with backside perched on the edge of this coaming and also searching for a decent and substantial foothold.

Under sail 8/10

The test took place on a glorious autumn day in the Solent. Although the weather was beautiful, I couldn’t help but wish I could somehow replace the brutalist Fawley power station with the softer contours of the hills of southern Provence to fully appreciate this yacht in its natural environment. The breeze was a fairly steady 12 knots and, although it was slightly marginal, it was decided that we would go for the full main. For racing, this is a yacht that is well suited to being sailed three-up and the helming position allows plenty of space aft for a dedicated mainsheet trimmer. In the conditions and, given our decision not to reef, it was no surprise that we were slightly overpressed, but the twin rudders gave her tremendous grip and she always felt poised and precise on the helm. Sheltered within the inner confines of Southampton Water there was only a modest chop, but she soaked it up well and with that narrow entrance run well aft, relatively slender hull and long waterline, I imagine she would handle bigger seas comfortably without slamming. She is unquestionably a wet boat and, although the cockpit feels secure, that low freeboard would mean you would eventually feel vulnerable so close to the water in bigger seas.

The benefit of the low freeboard is that you are also closer to the action and that is exhilarating. Combine that with her light displacement and you have a boat that handles and feels more like a dinghy than a 33 footer and that is very life affirming. She’s quick too. Properly quick by monohull standards and was soon taking great chunks of distance out of larger yachts that were in our company.

Hard on the wind, with apparent wind angles in the high 30s, we were hitting speeds of six knots and as soon as we eased the sheets, we rapidly hit seven.

Off the wind the the asymmetric and Code 0 combined with a feather light displacement and excellent control via the twin rudders mean this is a yacht that is eager to get on the plane early. If we had been in waves, I think we could have got her going with ease in the 12 knot breeze.

Interior 6/10

This is essentially a day sailor that you could sleep on for a bit of glamping or an overnight passage. If you’re planning on sleeping onboard for extended periods of time, get another boat. She does feature a twin berth in the bow and a pilot berth, which runs beneath the cockpit. On the test boat, this interior was stripped out and spartan, but this is a semi custom yacht, so you can really fit her out to quite a luxurious spec, with galley units, refrigerator and porta-potti all available.

The fact is though, that you’re never going to have anything other than sitting headroom in here, and, ultimately it all feels a bit tawdry to be talking about porta potti on a yacht that otherwise exudes class.

Verdict 8/10

To my mind, this yacht achieves both of its primary aims. It’s aesthetically pleasing and sails very fast. I’m told she rates well under IRC so is competitive. With that feather light displacement and big sail area, she could doubtless perform spectacularly out on the racecourse in the right hands. The other great benefit would be that, at the end of a day’s racing, you could retire to the bar and spend the evening casually looking out to catch a glimpse of your pride and joy.

If you’re looking at yachts in this size and performance bracket, then the J/88 is the sane man’s choice, but yachting has nothing to do with sanity. For me, this is a yacht that belongs on the Cote d’Azur swinging on a mooring outside your luxury villa. In my opinion, that’s her true domain and if I had the villa, this is the yacht I would choose to accompany it.

Sailing aboard a Code 0.1 is disconcertingly simple; all maneuvers are designed to be easy with everything within reach: self-tacking jib, and cockpit maneuvers, will delight the captain and his crew as well as the solo sailor. The lightness of the boat is exhilarating! Acceleration is immediate in the slightest breeze, and the hull slices through the water with ease.

Versions with lifting keels provide access to all shallow harbours. Dual rudders ensure optimum steering, and the carbon rig allows infinite trimming. Her wide beam provides both power and stiffness, essential for performance and comfort. Her headroom and volume provide the comfort of a true cruiser, essential for family trips.

Key Highlights

Yacht Review & Polar diagram

This neoclassical-inspired day boat, built in carbon and designed for cruising and racing, not to mention her perfect seakeeping in strong winds and her habitability, reveals tremendous performance potential, thanks to her powerful rig, her very strict weight specifications, her ballast ratio, her draught and her equipment.

She had to be just as elegant as the Code 0, but go faster, and have more space inside to offer the possibility of living aboard and going on voyages…

In 2019, architect Marc Lombard was entrusted with the design of this new boat, with the mission of respecting the spirit of her predecessor, and in particular the silhouette of its famous doghouse roof and aft vault, replicas of classic sailing yachts. Her overall look retains the key Codes of the brand and gives her that sober, racy elegance of the historic J-class yachts .

Vintage Racer

This recent yacht is a veritable masterpiece of technology, design and attitude, revolutionizing the world of Maxi yachts… Wide hull, inverted sheer , inverted bow, small dog house, huge flush deck, interior loft; this boat’s general appearance and statistics (weight, speed, etc…), go well beyond the mainstream and border on the insolent…

Inspired by the 100′ ocean racers, the Code 3, designed by Sam Manuard shortly after the Imoca l’Occitane en Provence, is destined for offshore cruising and racing. Her silhouette and charm are the result of a combination of historic and modern lines, a signature Black Pepper® design (dog house, teak deck…). On board, nothing is left to chance: high-tech carbon construction, ergonomics, ease of maneuvering, luxurious equipment and materials, living space, cabins, bathrooms, tender garage, cockpit saloon. Everything is designed to ensure owners comfort, safety and autonomy.

Between Code 0, a 10-meter day-boat 10 years her senior, and Code 3, the style has endured and the lines remain the same. Rarely has a manufacturer so faithfully cultivated its exclusive style!

There are taut lines, a straight edge low to the water, and a gentle blend of carbon grey and blond teak throughout the deck. The final visual touch is the brand’s signature square doghouse roof, inspired by the classic boats of the East Coast of the USA.

Code 3 is of course fully customizable:

  • Number of cabins and interior layouts.
  • Decoration, furniture, materials.
  • Electronics.
  • Onboard comfort: air conditioning, desalinator, hydro generator, bow thrusters, solar panels, etc.
  • Lifting keel.

Bateau gris en mer

The gauges go wild! Corsica is now just a few hours’ sail from Saint Tropez… More than two figures on the dials…

On deck, Code 3 is faithful to the shipyard’s philosophy: the ropes all reach the 2 pianos at the rear of the cockpit, passing under the teak deck. The Code 3 is a racer designed to be sailed by a small crew!

The halyards, sheets and headsail furlers are operated by electric winches that can be disengaged. Two spaces in the cockpit separate the maneuvering from the guests seated in the deck saloon; combining comfort and performance in two clearly dedicated areas…

Below deck, in a minimalist neo-industrial style, there is a huge loft-style saloon with a galley separated by an island, to which are adjoined four beautiful, bright double cabins, each with its own bathroom. Two crew cabins, a sail locker, a garage for the tender and a technical area complete the clever layout of this boat.

Ship building.

The Code # is built from dry carbon fibre and epoxy resin. Each part is made using  the infusion process,  which keeps the weight down by optimally controlling the quantities of resin used. This process consists of placing parts draped in dry carbon fabric under vacuum in a mould closed by a tarpaulin, which are then impregnated under vacuum by injection of the required quantity of resin, which is drawn in by the vacuum created in the mould.

The hull and deck are built in separate moulds and then assembled manually by gluing and laminating. The entire boat structure is first assembled by gluing and laminating in the hull.

The whole structure is then coated and painted before the integration of systems (rudders, keel, power, engine, etc.), electronic and electrical components, fittings, teak, fittings, preparation of the mast and boom.

Description

Black Pepper Code 0.1 : Kohlefaser-Rakete mit Siegpotential

Michael Good

 ·  25.05.2024

Schnittiger Schlitten.

Alles dran, wenig drin
