Grand banks history committed to quality.

Founded in 1956, Grand Banks Yachts first gained recognition for their classic wooden boats, which were known for their elegant lines, comfortable interiors, and seaworthiness. The company's wooden boats were built to last, and many of them are still sailing today, a testament to the company's commitment to quality. In the 1970s, Grand Banks Yachts shifted to producing fiberglass models, which enabled them to offer a wider range of designs and sizes. Today, the company produces both fiberglass and aluminum models, ranging from 43 to 85 feet in length.

Despite the shift to new materials, Grand Banks Yachts has retained its commitment to traditional boatbuilding techniques and quality. Each yacht is hand-built by skilled craftsmen, who take pride in their work and pay attention to every detail. From the woodwork to the wiring, every aspect of the boat is meticulously crafted and inspected to ensure that it meets the company's exacting standards.

Popular Grand Banks Models

Grand Banks has been building yachts for over 60 years and in this time has offered many different models ranging in size from 36 to 85 feet. Their current lineup of new yachts consists of the Grand Banks 54, 60, and 85, as well as the Eastbay 44 and 60. There are also several models that have been discontinued but are still very popular on the pre-owned brokerage market.

Grand Banks 85

The GB85 is the largest yacht built by Grand Banks, and an amazingly fuel-efficient vessel. She combines sophistication, practicality, modernization, and luxury altogether for a phenomenal yachting experience enjoyed by all. By utilizing the most advanced construction techniques they have created a vessel that is lighter and travels longer while maintaining the build quality and comfort that makes Grand Banks highly desirable.

Grand Banks 60

The GB60 was launched by Grand Banks in 2016 and is a revered member to what is a fantastic lineage of long-distance cruising vessels. She provides a spectacular showcase of what sets Grand Banks apart from the rest of the cruising world. At the first glance you will stop and stare at the beauty of her distinct lines and V-Warp hull. Featuring a combination of high tech and high style, she provides a world of luxury and state-of-the-art technology in concert. With the ability to cover over 200 nautical miles at 10 knots she makes long range cruising a breeze.

Grand Banks 54

The GB54 follows suit of its predecessor and bigger sister, the GB60. Launched in Spring 2020, she has already made quite a splash in her first few years. She provides another iteration of a fantastic combination of luxury, performance, practicality, and efficiency. The commitment that Grand Banks makes to quality construction and the highest standards is very much evident in the GB54, which cruises comfortably and won’t shake or rattle even when the seas are rolling.

Giving life back to downeast style yachts and reinvigorating the spirit of yachting, the EB 60 is the flagship of the Eastbay line by Grand Banks. With cruising capability and top of the line amenities, she relishes the effort put forth by the competition. Eastbay owners past, present, and future will be proud of the direction Grand Banks has gone with this line.

The Eastbay 54 was quite the spectacle in her prime, being one of the most highly regarded downeast express yachts in her class with a deep-vee hull, substantial weight, and Grand Banks high quality build standards combined with Ray Hunt's fantastic design.

The predecessor to the 54, the Eastbay 49 set the standard for the Downeast style yacht. She offered a combination of seaworthiness, comfort, performance, and style that could not be matched by any other manufacturer.

Continuing with the quality and craftsmanship of Grand Banks, the Eastbay 46 brought an elegant and sporty component to the Eastbay brand. Veering away from the direct drive and towards the pod drive system which, at the time, was a new and innovative approach to enhancing maneuverability and performance. The 46 continues to be a popular and respected yacht on the pre-owned brokerage market.

The EB44 is a perfect combination of traditional and modern from bow to stern. Launched in 2015, she has been turning heads ever since. She presents a wonderful rush at a cruising speed of 25 knots and top speed of 33 knots, all while still maintaining that amazing fuel efficiency due to the construction materials and design that all Grand Banks models are known for.

Learn More About Sabre And Find Your Next Boat

Since 1970, Sabre Yachts have been crafting some of the most luxurious downeast yachts in the industry. Based in Maine, the company’s founder, Roger Hewson, set out to build the finest 28-ft sailing yacht, which enabled him to produce 29-45 foot sailboat models for the next forty years.   In 1989, the “Fast Trawler” was introduced and made the Sabre name become a prominent one. In 1995, Sabre then obtained North End Composites of Rockland, Maine – a large manufacturer of marine molds and fiberglass parts. Having this relationship allowed Sabre to produce powerboat models from 38 to 66 feet with Salon Express and Fly Bridge variations using up-to-date technology and production line methods. Now Sabre acquires two boat yards, one in Raymond and the other in Rockland connected by their sister company, Back Cove Yachts.

List Of Sabre Yachts On The Brokerage Market

Sabre and Back Cove employ what they call “boat parents” – these are employees who follow each boat through the manufacturing process and act as the eyes of the consumer. In order to correspond to this process, all boats are given a 600-point inspection over six separate stages, which ends with a twelve-page report to be inspected. This cycle led to the Sabre name having a reputation – a company that values its product to the most extremes. Throughout the years Sabre has become a well-known and established name by listening carefully to its owners and dealerships. Continuously refining their product, Sabre has taken pride in designing and manufacturing boats that make sense to boaters. Offering cruise speeds of 25 knots with top end speeds in excess of 30 knots, Sabre models have established themselves to have top quality features and innovative designs.

From her functional foredeck to her top-of-the-line deck hardware, the 66 Dirigo is the largest and most luxurious Sabre motor yacht to date. Debuting in 2015, the 66 is the first American-built Downeast-style motor yacht of this size. Making great impressions for any boat goer, the 66’ offers a spacious and comfortable cockpit that is suitable for any social gathering. Entering the saloon via two glass sliding doors with stainless frames, you will see an unusually open floorplan with light shining in from the glass doors aft, three windshield panes forward, and the super-sized skylight. Cherry cabinets and fine granite countertops are placed throughout making every detail catch the eye. The helm deck is elevated with a three-person L-shaped settee, which is made with classic blue leather. Below deck in the accommodations, you can find a surprising amount of standing headroom within the midships master and a VIP stateroom with a walk-around queen bed. Underway, this model powers along, smooth and strong making it a lovely ride in any condition. Crafted by boat builders with decades of experience, her systems are modern and functional making this model one of the best from Sabre Yachts.

54 Flybridge

Sophisticated and welcoming, the 54’ Flybridge was created to offer not just a boat, but also a truly luxurious experience. Completed with a L-shaped settee and captain and mates seating, the 54’ creates an enhanced cruising experience for any boat owner. Featuring three berths, two heads, a half-up galley, and a spacious salon – this model is perfect for those looking for that weekend getaway or cocktail cruise with some friends. The cherry joinery in the salon glows from the effects of the outdoors coming in. Among the salon sits the galley a few steps down, which features clean lines and top appliances that can be seen with the light pouring through. Plenty of stowage can be found in the forward stateroom, with an opening overhead hatch and an ensuite head with a circular door. Not only are the accommodations appealing, but the engine room features gelcoat interior and diamond plate sole. Easily accessible, the engine room displays state-of-the-art equipment, and most notably has low noise. This model is no stranger to those who appreciate high standards for a downeast-style boat and will provide a smooth, enjoyable cruise.

48 Salon Express

An ideal combination of evolution and revolution, the 48 Salon Express is most notably known for its exterior profile that gives credit to her performance. Cruising at 27 knots with an open throttle, the 48 can even reach up to 32 knots comfortably. Low sound levels make this model easily enjoyable while cruising, while the pod drives and joystick controls give every boat operator confidence to dock her in any condition. Designed with light and space in mind, the two cabin, two head layout is supplemented by a utility space forward of the engine room that can be used as additional crew space. The galley-down layout allows guests to enjoy preparing food and drink for any gathering. The cockpit also offers a welcoming surprise by displaying a one-level arrangement that works extremely well for entertaining and allows for a seamless transition from the swim platform to the salon. Additionally, the 48’ does a superb job in creating the feeling of openness by including an optional sunroof that can be opened with the aft window lowered – offering plenty of breeze flying and saltwater aroma from the outdoors. Every detail included works perfectly creating a timeless, elegant, yet contemporary design.

42 Salon Express

Established as being an excellent day boat and coastal cruiser, the Sabre 42’ offers panoramic views and was built with comfort in mind. The Sabre Salon keeps the spacious layout in the interior and on deck – giving owners comfort, luxury and ample options for entertaining and socializing. Surrounded with windows, the salon features cherry wood and fiberglass walls throughout the main cabin, which is exposed with light through the triple-paned windshield and large side windows to the aft. From the captain’s chair, there is a 360-degree visibility making it easily manageable and enjoyable. The 42’s aft deck will not disappoint with its L-shaped settee that includes an oval table and two-person bench settee that can seat up to six guests. Storage space can be accessed through the galley, that includes stainless drawers and granite counter tops. Below deck, you can be transported into the world of traditional New England craftsmanship and sensible design. Satin varnish and quality woodwork raises the level of luxury throughout the cabin. This model begs its owners to enjoy the cruising life as well as appreciate those fine details that Sabre is known for.

Used Sabre Yachts For Sale

Sabre Yachts is an established yacht brand in the U.S., well known, particularly on the East Coast. The company dates back to 1970, and is headquartered in Raymond, Maine, slightly northwest of Portland. For over 50 years the company has built thousands of boats for the recreational market, first with its popular sailboat line, then moving over to the Downeast-style powerboats that carry it forward today.

(Seattle Yachts provides access to thousands of boats and yachts available on the market today. These new and used yachts for sale around the world and on the MLS may or may not be listed with Seattle Yachts, however we have the expert team on staff to help you with the purchase of any brand or type of boat.)

The first sailboat offered by the company was the venerable Sabre 28, a Jim Taylor design that set the foundation for the company’s sailboat line, as well as reasonably high customer expectations, for good-looking, moderate displacement performance cruisers that satisfied the needs of cruising sailors looking for a sailboat that hits all the buttons. Sabre’s sailboats were perfect for weekend coastal cruising for couples and small families and came with all the cachet of being hand-built in Maine. The boats have enough hardwood in their interiors to meet the demands for that traditional Downeast  look, and the company used quality hardware, spars, and rigging to satisfy experienced sailors. Almost 600 Sabre 28s were launched.

Sabre Yachts founder Roger Hewson came out with several updated versions of the Sabre 28, each better, faster, and offering a better sailing experience. The company also built on its success by introducing new models, including the Sabre 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 42, 425, and 452 models. Several of these boats were successful enough that the builder kept improving them in subsequent versions, incorporating the inevitable advances in construction and technology that the sailing industry came upon during the years. All Sabre sailboats are traditional masthead sloops, perfect for cruising and racing on the weekend circuit.

In 1989 the company introduced its first powerboat, the Sabre 36, a “fast trawler” which made a splash into the growing interest from the trawler cruising community. Its standard twin diesel engines provided the faster cruising speed many were looking for, in a practical design that embodied enough of the Maine influence that has been synonymous with Sabre since 1970.

In 1994, the company acquired North End Marine of Rockland, and the new company, renamed North End Composites, focused on producing fiberglass hulls and decks for the company’s line up, which by the mid-2000s had moved to the powerboat-only segment of recreational boating.

Living through changes in the recreational market, Sabre Yachts survived during the decline of consumer demand for sailboats, and ultimately decided to get out of the sailboat business entirely. The company looked to the horizon, and then focused its development, production, and marketing efforts on a new line of traditional Maine-inspired, Sabre-designed Downeast Cruisers. These new powerboat models would offer comfortable and luxury accommodations in a faster cruising boat that retained all the elements of a Maine-inspired cruiser, keeping with traditional interiors and profiles. In short order, Sabre Yachts made the successful switch from sailboat manufacturer to builder of quality cruising powerboats that offer higher speed with all the comforts of the trawler lifestyle.

The ongoing evolution of Sabre’s Downeast powerboats are seen in today’s lineup of Salon Express cruisers that combine very comfortable, somewhat traditional accommodations with the performance offered by having twin Volvo IPS drives. The models range from the Salon 38 Express up to the flagship 58-foot Express.

Sabre sailboats are still popular and boats that have been lovingly cared for are still in demand. People who own or search for a Sabre 38 Mark II, for example, appreciate the timeless, classic look of a traditional sailing yacht, and know they can expect continued customer support from the company for parts, service, and information. The attractive 38-footer offers a layout with two staterooms, 6’4” headroom throughout, three keel options (from 6’6” deep keel to 4’11” wing keel), in an easily-driven, moderate displacement hull with a 31’5” waterline. The boat has a very comfortable 8-foot-long cockpit outfitted with the best hardware for spirited sailing and occasional racing.

The profile of all Sabre sailboats says it all about the classic beauty of the company’s design program. The Sabre 38’s standard 35hp diesel engine and the boat’s fuel and water tankage are more than adequate for successful weekend cruising along the coasts, particularly in New England waters where the boats are seen everywhere.

Sabre’s Downeast-style yachts all have the performance of a contemporary motor yacht. The standard design includes twin engines to provide cruising speeds in the 20-knot range, and the deep-vee hulls typically top out near 30 knots, depending on optional power. When combined with the unmatched maneuverability of the IPS propulsion system, operating one of these beauties is something all boaters need to experience.

The Sabre 43 is a good example of this Downeast powerboat line. It has a sleek look instantly recognizable as a Sabre, and the interior proportions and accommodations closely match those of other Downeast cruisers of this size. A large island berth is a standard feature of Sabre’s forward stateroom, while the saloon shares space and storage with both helm and galley, each of which are well sized for a yacht of this size and outfitted to meet the demands of any yachtsman. The Sabre 43 is also commissioned as a fully networked yacht and all controls and functions can be controlled and monitored from either the helm displays or one’s iPad. Remote monitoring of critical systems is certainly a glimpse into the future of powerboat cruising and Sabre intends to stay at the cutting edge of this technology.

Sabre Yachts has come a long way in the past 50 years, while remaining true to its Maine roots. Its staff of talented craftsmen are very experienced and stay on top of new production techniques and technology. Sabre sailboats are still easily recognized, and stand out in any anchorage or yacht club outing. Sabre’s powerboats showcase fast yacht performance and efficiency as they pass most all other boats on the waterways.

While some lament the demise of the company’s sailboat line, the future is all about convenience, technology, and lasting value. Sabre Yachts feels its powerboats embody these essential qualities rather well.

This makes the company well positioned for today and many years to come. Sabre's sister company is Back Cove Yachts .

About sabre yachts.

Inspired by the traditional lobster fishing boats of Maine, Sabre Yachts has always specialized in Downeast-style vessels. Founded in 1970 and located in Raymond, Maine, this company is proud to maintain a tradition that stretches back to the 17th century yet builds its yachts with the most modern methods and the latest in cutting-edge nautical equipment.

More About Sabre Yachts

Roger Hewson started Sabre Yachts in 1970 with the intention of building the finest Downeast-style yachts in America. His first model was a 28-foot, fiberglass sailing yacht that was launched at the 1971 Newport Boat Show. The boat was an immediate success with critics and buyers alike and the firm went on to sell 588 of these vessels over the next 15 years. In 1989 Hewson decided to move into the world of motorboats, and launched the Sabre 36, a fast tri-cabin trawler yacht with the durability of bluewater vessels and the sparkling charm of a Maine lobster boat.

When Hewson retired from yacht building in the early 1990s the company was acquired by current joint chairmen Daniel Zilkha and Ed Miller. Zilkha was a founding partner at a Geneva-based investment bank, while Miller was vice-president of Rothschild Inc, but both were living in Maine at the time and wanted to get involved in the state’s rich heritage of boatbuilding. This move proved highly fortuitous. Since the company changed hands, Sabre Yachts has grown exponentially, constantly innovating and introducing new models, and selling vessels to owners who are now located in all four corners of the globe. In 1994 Sabre acquired North End Marine, a Maine builder of molds and production fibreglass, to ensure their ability to keep up with unprecedented consumer demand. In 2003, meanwhile, Sabre launched Back Cove yachts, a subsidiary that focuses on the production of smaller motorboats. Since their founding, the firm has manufactured over 4,000 yachts across dozens of models.

Today Sabre concentrates their abilities on motor yachts in both Flybridge and Salon Express models, ranging from 38 to 66 feet in length. Their top performing vessels clock in top speeds of over 30 knots, and benefit from Sabre’s proprietary planed, vee-hulls. Every Sabre yacht is also built with luxury and comfort in mind, and their spacious interiors are finished with the highest level of craftsmanship. The company partners with top range suppliers to source materials for their yachts, which can be decked out in glazed teak, cherrywood and cedar. Sold as new cost, these yachts between $700,000 and $3.5 million, so appeal to both the dayboat and luxury cruising market. Sabre owners are known to head out into the Atlantic and Caribbean for longer journeys but are just as likely to be found cruising the passages and inlets of New England or Washington State’s Puget Sound.

The company now runs two boatyards, one in Raymond, Maine and another upstate in coastal Rockland, Maine, where a dedicated team of more than 350 associates and skilled employees build their yachts with VIP resin infusion technology. Sabre Yachts benefits from a low turnover in staff, allowing the company to establish a strong business ethos based on trust and experience. Staff at this company give every yacht launched by Sabre a 600-point inspection plan across the entire manufacturing process to ensure the final product is as safe, reliable and high quality as possible. Based on production output Sabre is now Maine’s largest builder of recreational boats and yachts, no mean feat given the rich and vibrant boat-building tradition of the Pine Tree State. The company has also garnered plenty of prizes and titles down the years, including an impressive six “Boat of the Year” awards from Cruising World and Sailing World magazines.

SABRE MODELS

Sabre Dirigo Salon Express 66

Sabre’s largest yacht by length and one of the largest Downeast-style yachts ever launched in America, the Dirigo Salon Express 66 measures almost 74 feet when including the rear swimming platform. The name Dirigo is Latin for “I Lead”, a reference to Maine’s official motto, highlighting Sabre’s ties to this most maritime of states. The yacht also happens to be one of Sabre’s most luxurious and well-built models ever put to water. Launched in 2016, it boasts a helm dash finished in cherry with a wood-trimmed, stainless steel wheel, a spacious main salon with U-shaped sofa to port, starboard lounge chairs and a fully equipped bar deck. The yacht’s three staterooms are sumptuous affairs, with cherrywood ceilings and wall-panels, accent lighting, plush queen-sized beds and climate control. The galley is large enough for full kitchen facilities including microwave, induction cooktop and convection steam oven, ideal for owners who wish to take their vessel out to sea for longer journeys. The yacht also excels when it comes to performance, with dual Volvo IPS engines delivering top speeds of around 30 knots and a cruising range of up to 900 miles.

Sabre Fly Bridge Sedan 42

It was Sabre’s loyal customer-base who provided the impetus for the creation of the Fly Bridge Sedan 42. Time and again the company would hear that buyers wanted that open air and elemental experience on their yacht, and so decided to create a refined, high-performance vessel topped with a sublime flybridge. The bridge is fitted with all navigational and cruising controls required to steer this vessel to distant coves and hidden bays, but is also a superb place for al fresco entertaining, with a rear L-shaped sofa and pair of pilot’s seats. The yacht is fitted with Cummins Zeus inboard pod-drives for a top speed of around 33 knots and a quiet and responsive ride, while interior spaces retain Sabre’s signature lavish and sedate styling.

Sabre Salon Express 38

This reliable and seaworthy vessel is the most compact yacht currently sold by Sabre at 41 feet in length, and is perfect for those who use their vessels for day trips and leisurely weekend cruises. 360-degree sightlines at the helm are designed for owner-operators who want to chart their own course, while Volvo Penta engines will rocket this yacht to top speeds of 36 knots. At the lowest cruising speeds the Sabre Salon Express 38 has an oceanic range of over 1,000 nautical miles, while guests can rest overnight in the spacious master-stateroom V-berth which is large enough to accommodate a double-bed and ample storage. At night relax under the stars on the aft deck which is fitted with a comfortable transom sofa and console table, or enjoy a spot of underwater snorkelling during the day from the yacht’s retractable swimming platform.

Palm Beach 45 Sedan

For owners in the market for a yacht with classic Downeast lines and a modern interior, Alexander Marine USA has Black Swan , a Palm Beach Motor Yachts 45 Sedan, listed for $1.3 million. This 2015 build has a skinny-water-friendly, sub three-foot draft and a two-stateroom layout.

The bridge deck has a light-and-bright atmosphere with a palette of contemporary white-and-gray fabrics combined with a tasteful amount of Burmese teak. The space has unobstructed views thanks to nearly 360 degrees of glass and low-profile furnishings, which make the space feel voluminous. Palm Beach 45 Sedan

Blink and you might miss the galley seamlessly built into the starboard cabinet, abaft the helm station. Owners and guests will have access to a microwave oven, an Isotherm refrigerator and freezer, a stainless-steel sink and a dishwasher. Opening the galley window means seamlessly passing food and drinks to the cockpit.

Aft, an awning extends out to shade the teak cockpit where guests can enjoy alfresco dining at the transom bench seat and fixed table.

Palm Beach 45 Sedan

Power for Black Swan comes from twin, low-hour (610) 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650S diesels, which give the 52-footer a 34-knot top hop and a 28-knot cruise speed.

Belowdecks, sleeping accommodations include two staterooms for up to four people. The forepeak master has a queen berth and overhead stowage, while the port guest space has a tapered twin berth. The single head is to starboard with a shower stall.

Difference between scaling and nonscaling patterns

What is this.

When you color a country with a pattern (dots, stripes, etc.), the pattern by default gets scaled (resized) to fit its size . You can change this to use nonscaling patterns that look the same on all countries. Examples:

Scaling (default)

scaling patterns world map

What to choose?

It can depend on the map or the patterns/colors you select, but generally:

  • Scaling patterns (default) are better for maps with small subdivisions, like the detailed maps or the US counties map.
  • Scaling patterns (default) are better for zoomed in areas.
  • Nonscaling patterns can look better for maps with larger subdivisions, like the simple World map or the US states map.
  • Nonscaling patterns can look better when you have a small number of patterns in your map, as they stand out more.

In any case, you can switch this setting on/off as many times as you need to see the difference live on your map. More details on the blog .

Student-Centered World

The Ultimate World War 2 Map of Europe Activity

With a curriculum as expansive as some historical ones are, we often shlep through talking about matters of geography. We might show a map in passing or glance over it when it’s relevant, but we are truly doing our students a disservice by not digging deeper, especially when looking at the World War 2 Map of Europe.

You see, so many today have no idea how to read a map!

Truly…with the invention of the GPS, it is much easier to just have turn-by-turn directions given to you (I’m just as guilty as the next person). However, studying maps in a historical sense is so much more than that. Understanding borders, territories, and changes over generations allows so much to make more sense, understanding why certain groups clash or even why we are having some issues today in the world.

Early on in my history teacher career, I realized something pretty profound…

You can discuss the history of any conflict at length…but if your students don’t have a concrete idea of where you’re talking about, some of the information will be lost in translation.

It’s no secret that World War Two changed the landscape of many parts of the globe. To think that there are boundaries that were forever changed and some places that no longer exist as they did in 1939 is mindblowing for some students.

Why the Changing Landscape of World War II Europe Matters

When looking at a World War 2 Map of Europe, it is important to fully understand the long-term implications of the changing of borders and the correlation with the change of power. The World War 2 Map of Europe is a mosaic of multiple regional wars that were interconnected through alliances, betrayal, and conquest. Understanding how the world was redrawn is key to understanding the power structures that exist today.

The distinct border changes of the World War 2 Map of Europe show not just the changing fortunes of war, but also the shifting alliances that have constantly been re-shuffled. When looking at a map of Europe during World War 2, it’s easy to see how it was incredibly fluid with constantly moving borders based on the temporary ceasefire lines drawn at the end of each conflict.

1939 – 1945: The World War 2 Map of Europe in 1939 and 1945

At the beginning of World War 2, the Axis Powers, including Nazi Germany and Japan, posed a formidable threat to the world. Their aggression had already led to the invasion of Poland and the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, drawing the United States into the conflict. Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany controlled a significant part of Northwestern Europe, while the Soviet Union and the Western Allies, led by the United States and Great Britain under the leadership of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, opposed the Axis forces.

In North Africa, there were major battles between the Axis Powers and the Western Allies. The Axis control extended into Northern Africa, but their advances were gradually halted.

1946 – 1948: The World War 2 Map of Europe after 1946

By 1945, the tides had turned, and the Axis Powers were defeated. Germany, Japan, and Italy were occupied by the victorious United States, Britain, and France. The European Union, although not as we know it today, began to take shape as the post-war world order was established. Neutral countries played a significant role in the reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the war.

1945 – 1948: The Berlin Blockade & Airlift

In 1949, Germany was officially divided into West Germany and East Germany, a reflection of the broader divisions in Europe during the post-war period. The “Iron Curtain” descended, separating East from West, and the Soviet Union maintained control over Eastern Europe. The Berlin Blockade and subsequent Airlift demonstrated the stark differences in life on either side of this ideological and physical divide.

1948 – 1989: The Post-War World Map of Europe

Stalin’s blockade of West Berlin led to a massive Airlift, symbolizing the resolve of the Western Allies to stand firm against Soviet influence. The Airlift ensured the supply of food and essential goods to the beleaguered population in West Berlin.

The post-war era saw the emergence of the United Nations as a forum for international cooperation and conflict resolution, reflecting the new world order. The Cold War tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States and its Western allies loomed large, shaping global politics for decades.

That is a lot of movement on the World War 2 map of Europe in such a short period of time. It is important for our students to visually understand these changes and the implications of how power shifted from one nation to another and the alliances they formed. As we know, this led to a whole host of problems as the Cold War began brewing.

World War 2 Map of Europe Activity

Though students may understand this in theory, it is easier to comprehend visually.

Since most of us obviously don’t have the luxury of taking a field trip all over Europe with our students in tow each year, it is important to find a way to do this that will be effective and easily implemented in the classroom.

This World War 2 map of Europe activity does just that.

Multiple Variations of World War 2 Map of Europe Activity

This activity has several variations that will help you either break down the information easier for your students or readily differentiate for them.

There are two distinct maps in this World War 2 map of Europe activity . One is from during the war and the other is Post-WWII.

Each map has different versions to pick from.

The “during” World War 2 map (Europe) breaks down the occupation of the continent by Germany, USSR, Italy, and Neutrality.

There is a map version with each country labeled and one that is not, depending on the depth you want to achieve.

There are instruction sheets that go along with each. One breaks down the countries by the occupation categories, one just lists the countries in alphabetical order, and yet another asks for the dates the occupied countries were taken.

There is a key in all of the above to color code for visualization.

The “post” World War 2 map (Europe) shows the change of borders and also “zooms” in on Berlin to see the change there as well.

This map also has a pre-labeled and blank version with the color-coding key.

When all is said and done, there is a comprehension question sheet that compares the two and also helps to foreshadow the Cold War via interpretation of geographical challenges that may be faced given the new borders.

This activity is perfect for every level of student who is learning about World War Two . The differentiated levels go from basic to complex and can still be adapted further by the teacher.

When the correct map is picked in regards to student level and achievement, they really enjoy working on this. It combines a challenge in researching the correct answers and also a fun, more laid-back feel as there is a color-coding element.

Why our students need to look at maps

Again, it is important that we are still teaching our students about maps in the classroom. We live in an era of GPS and it is vital that our children still read maps .

As a matter of fact, the Washington Post had an eye-opening article about the use of GPS devices and the decline in hippocampus development . To quote:

“ In a  study  published in Nature Communications in 2017, researchers asked subjects to navigate a virtual simulation of London’s Soho neighborhood and monitored their brain activity, specifically the hippocampus, which is integral to spatial navigation. Those who were guided by directions showed less activity in this part of the brain than participants who navigated without the device. “The hippocampus makes an internal map of the environment and this map becomes active only when you are engaged in navigating and not using GPS,” Amir-Homayoun Javadi, one of the study’s authors, told me.

The hippocampus is crucial to many aspects of daily life. It allows us to orient in space and know where we are by creating cognitive maps. It also allows us to recall events from the past, what is known as episodic memory. And, remarkably, it is the part of the brain that neuroscientists believe gives us the ability to imagine ourselves in the future. “

O’Connor, M.R. “Ditch the GPS. It’s Ruining Your Brain.” The Washington Post, 5 June 2019, www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ditch-the-gps-its-ruining-your-brain/2019/06/05/29a3170e-87af-11e9-98c1-e945ae5db8fb_story.html.

So in the end, this activity helps our students two-fold. It helps them visually understand the landscape of pre and post-World War II Europe and also helps brain development by understanding a map.

Every little bit counts!

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Length: 50 Feet

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

A Flybridge is basically a version of catamarans that affords you the luxury of outdoor space, come rain or shine. Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

It’s a semi-custom interior designed by VPLP in conjunction with Patrick le Quement. It won the ‘European Yacht of the Year’ and Cruising World’s ‘Boat of the Year’ in 2013 and 2014. This catamaran is as affordable as a luxury catamaran over 50 feet can get. Beautiful isn’t she?

Length: 51 Feet

Price: From $450k to $550k On the Used Market

Aimed at Blue-water sailors looking to sail fast and far, Switch 51 has proved itself and regarded in this day as a remarkable ocean cruising catamaran. This classic high-performance voyage was designed by VPLP and is said to combine a level of comfort, performance, and safety. It was built by Sud Composites in France with high tech materials. Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. This also a pretty affordable option in this category with prices on the used market as low as 450k.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
