Passport 42 designed by Stan Huntingford

  • Add to quote

Hoping for opinions on this Passport line from the early 80's (I think). Can't find much from the Internet. These are clearly beautiful boats and they continue to command a high price -- well north of $100K. We have something at Sailnet on the beloved 40, but I don't see much if anything on the 42. Some questions: deck construction tank materials ballast sailing behavior reputation regarding repairs and maintenance

We looked at some Passports when we were shopping. If I recall correctly, the Passport 42 and the Slocum 43 had the same hull, so you might find additional information by going that route. All the different boats we looked at kind of run together now in my head, but you might want to check whether they used coring in the hull below the waterline. I think that was a concern of ours when we were looking at a Slocum 43.

The Tayana 42 is also by Huntingford, I believe, and will be similar as well.. I think CD's folks own one.

tdw said: btw...the Tayana 42 was designed by Robert Harris not Stan Huntingford and to my mind is the superior boat as is the Bob Perry designed Valiant. Perry once remarked that while SH did some nice boats there was nothing he ever did that someone else hadn't already done better (or words to that effect). Bit harsh but probably true. slocum vs passport Actually, all tankage on the Slocum 43 is readily removable without any deconstruction of the boat. The fuel tanks come out through the locker in the aft cabin. That locker as originally constructed was designed to be unscrewed and removed. The holding tank is also easily removed straight up into the cabin. This from experience as I have personally removed all the tanks on Sea Fever. From reading some other missives, such is not the case for the Passports. The Passport 42 and the Formosa 42 version of the boat were solid layup below the waterline and I do not know the material used for coring the deck and hull above the waterline. The Slocum hulls were cored to the keel using Airex with all through-hull locations surrounded by solid lay-up. Watch out for POs and yard monkeys drilling through the cored areas without laying up a solid ring around the hole(s). I have never seen any problems with the Slocum hulls having water penetration.

I just bought a 1983 Passport 42 in Florida. It is a lovely boat and in very good condition. I'll be able to contribute more after I sail her up the coast to Long Island. BTW anyone interested in sailing part or all of the way in October. Tips on the voyage would be appreciated as well. Surveyor says I should replace all the standing rigging. There were no fish hooks or cracked swages (leastways on the deck side) and it seems like an unnecessary expense. Any comments?

Hello, I'm new to sailing and am looking for the right boat. May I ask how much you paid for your Passport 42? Michael

Freedom.... welcome to Sailnet and sailing! 'Goodtoknow' hasn't been active on the site for several months, once you get enough posts (15) you could send him a private message - he may still be getting email notifications of PMs. Good luck.

I paid $85000 for the Passport 42 in better than average condition. It is quite seaworthy and suprisingly fast for it's weight and class. Bringing it up the coast we got caught in a Noreaster going around the cape. 36 hours of 30 mph sustained winds with gusts to 60 and 15 ft waves. The boat handled it as well as can be expected with double reefed main and roller furled genoa. BTW the Genoa is now blown out and the roller fuler was damaged by the wind pressure. I didn't have the right sail inventory for the sea conditions. The floor plan is very comfortable with plenty of storage and my only complaint is the 6"4" draft which keeps me out of some places. Hope that helps, Bruce

Would love to hear more about your 42 now that you've had a few months to get to know her. Any little insight would be appreciated from one who is seriously looking in that direction. Thanks--

If you are considering a passport 42 I recommend it. It's sturdy, very seaworthy and suprisingly quick for its weight. It's roomy with plenty of storage and above average access to wiring and equipment.

Appreciate that. I've been vacillating between the Passport and something a bit more performance minded that would keep moving in light air. I was wondering about the quality of the P42 because they seem to sell for considerably less than nearly anything else in it's class--but it sounds like she holds her own. Thanks again.

As an engineer and experienced sailor I can tell you that the quality of the Passport 42 is outstanding. Bronze port holes, proper hardware, Burmese Teak interior, stoutly rigged, high volume tankage. The decission depends upon what you will use it for. If you will be going offshore the Passport will get you through when the poop hits the fan. If you don't have a lot of time and plan to sail mainly inland it's overkill and you would be better off buying the performance boat. Good Luck

For the record. The Slocum and the Passport are the same hull but with one difference. One model has a vertical rudder stock and the other has a raked rudder stock. As I recall the Slocum has the raked stock. Huntingford took the cheap and sleazy way out by selling the Slocum group the same boat he had designed for Passport. He made a slight change to the rudder stock rake so he could call it a "different" boat. This ended up causing friction between Passort and Huntingford as well it should have. Passport quit working with Huntingford. But it's a good design in either version. I have raced against it. There was one in Seattle called Europa and it did quite well. It wasn't a real winner but it usually gave a good accounting of itself. As I recall it sailed about boat for boat racing with the Baba 40.

Dream Keeper is just that, a solid cruising vessel that has fulfilled a lot of dreams.

She is a Passport 42 Aft Cockpit Cutter, designed by yacht designer Stan Huntingford. The Passport 42s were built in Taiwan, by Passport Yachts Inc.  They are known for being a strong and capable bluewater cruiser. Whether you’re offshore or in the harbor, she offers a spacious home with a meticulously cared for interior and exterior.

In the description below, you will find that DREAM KEEPER has had a lot of recent work done to her. From the standing rigging, running and engine work, you will be hard pressed to find another boat like her on the market. The only thing you need is yourself, food, and a destination in mind. Reach out to Geli Burgin for additional information. Lets un-pickle the water maker and get you on your way.

DREAM KEEPERS interior has a warm glow of newly freshened varnish. Her leather upholstery shows little wear. The solid teak makes it warm and inviting. Fire up the Force 10 diesel heater in the middle of the winter to keep your boat and fully enclosed cockpit toasty warm. In the summer you can remove the enclosure or swap the eisenglass panels for screens.

Starting forward there is a double berth offset with storage drawers underneath. The head is spacious with a nice vanity and step in shower. Opposite the bathroom is a large hanging closet. In the salon, to starboard is a straight settee with a huge L-shaped settee to port. The dining table is a two-leaf folding drop table, providing room to host 8 people comfortably. An offshore working galley, equipped with a newly installed Force 10 three burner propane stove is located to port aft to the dining area. There is plenty of counter space for your gourmet meals. To starboard is the navigation station, electrical panel and equipment. There is a large workbench / chart table aft to starboard. Aft of the galley is the second stateroom, offering the guest a nice double berth, plenty of storage all with great ventilation and light.

The cockpit is fully enclosed (and can be removed) with a folding table. Lines run aft to the winches making it easy to single or double hand.

The teak decks were re-seamed and re-plugged. The decks and prism glass are in excellent condition. The boat does feel and look newer than a 1985 model.

Swiftsure Yachts

Designed by Stan Huntingford and built by Passport Yachts,  Zephyr is a beautifully conceived cruising vessel well suited for extended coastal or long distance blue water cruising. Her interior is magnificently constructed with generous use of solid teak. Her living spaces feel much larger than her 42 feet while maintaining good storage spaces above and below decks. Two private staterooms with an additional quarterberth and convertible dinette will sleep seven.

INTERIOR ACCOMMODATIONS

Zephyr is designed with comfortable, functional sailing in mind. Gorgeous Burmese tongue and groove teak throughout, solid beveled teak cabin doors with louvers, teak and holly sole, heavy teak grab rails at the cabin sides under ports and solid teak companionway ladder are all features she boasts. Cabin top sides are white laminate and her headliner panels are covered in soft white faux leather material and held in place with teak battens. Opening ports, hatches and dorade vents provide good ventilation, and fans throughout her interior provide additional air movement in hot weather. Storage is also abundant with lockers and cabinets throughout – many with louvered fronts which provide essential storage ventilation. Her arrangement will sleep five in two private cabins and a single quarter-berth.

Beginning forward, the solid teak privacy door excludes the forward cabin from the salon, perfect for guests. Immediately to starboard is a large hanging locker with a louvred teak door to provide ventilation. Just forward is a built in dressing seat with cushions and a small shelf forward. The hull is lined with teak tongue and groove and three shelves on both port and starboard sides for clothing storage. At the very forward end of the bunk is access to the anchor locker. On the overhead is a single LED dome light with a switch on the hanging locker bulkhead. The twin bunk has a single 4” thick cushion and plentiful storage below. A single brass reading light is on the aft bulkhead above the bunk and a deck prism and overhead hatch provide additional light. The Hella cabin fan keeps air circulating for comfortable sleeping conditions.

Located on the port side just aft of the forward stateroom is the head and shower compartment . The head features a white Formica vanity, a single large vanity cabinet above the stainless vanity sink and a locker under vanity cabinet with solid teak door. A teak trim mirror is above the forward facing Lavac manual head, and a teak grate covers the sole. There is a large separate shower stall forward with a molded in seat and shower pan. A series of four hooks is provided for towels or washcloths. The handheld faucet is within reach when seated and above are two bronze opening ports for ventilation. The holding tank is located behind the shower seat outboard along the hull.

The comfortable salon is nicely arranged with a spacious U-shaped dinette to port and a straight settee to starboard. The dinette features a beautifully finished teak table that may be lowered to create an additional berth. On the forward port bulkhead is the Dickenson Newport propane cabin heater. Opposite the heater is a built-in cabinet with four drawers below and a countertop with sturdy varnished teak fiddles. Double bookshelves line the hull on both port and starboard sides with a cabinet on either end with teak louvred doors. There is generous storage above, behind, and below the settee and dinette seats. A large overhead hatch and cabin fan offer good airflow and the teak trimmed Lexan windows to both port & starboard deliver light to the cabin. Headroom is 6’6”.

The forward-facing navigation station is aft and to starboard in the salon. There is a large table with a lift top storage compartment. Below the seat are two storage drawers. Along the hull is more open storage compartments for guide books or small electronics. The main electrical panel is mounted here as well with the autopilot remote. Behind the seat back is a large hanging wet locker with a drain below into the bilge for foul weather gear.

The large C-shaped galley , opposite the nav station on the port side, features expansive counter space and tremendous amount of storage. The centerline double stainless steel sinks have hot/cold pressurized water plus a manual fresh-water pump, and additional storage space under sinks. A gimbaled Princess 3-burner LPG stove with oven is outboard and is lined with stainless steel, there are two LPG tanks in a dedicated propane locker aft of cockpit and remote solenoid shut-off valve on the galley bulkhead. Above the stove is one cabinet with sliding louvred teak doors and double height storage for dishware. On the aft end of the galley, are the refrigerator and freezer compartments. The freezer is large with access through two countertop hatches or a door in the lower bulkhead. The fridge is outboard and accessible through the countertop hatch. The freezer cools the fridge down passively through three holes in a bulkhead that divide the space. In the forward outboard corner of the galley is a large dry storage locker below the countertop. A deck hatch in the overhead above the galley lets out any unwanted cooking fumes and keeps the space well ventilated in conjunction with the companionway which is just aft of the galley.

The companionway is off-center to starboard to create a nice aft cabin on the port side. The four steps into the cabin are wide and sturdy with generous teak hand holds. Behind the two lower steps is storage.

Located to port at the base of the companionway is an enclosed aft cabin with a double size berth. There are four drawers below the bunk with more under the berth. A shelf runs along the hull the length of the berth for storage with a drawer on the aft end. There are two large storage compartments, one under the companionway stairs and the other in the aft bulkhead. Two bronze portlights and an overhead hatch that is protected by the dodger provides great airflow.

Located to starboard of the companionway, a quarterberth is perfect for ocean passages with easy access to the cockpit. There is ample access to storage below the berth.

DECK & HULL

Zephyr   is an aft cockpit double ended cutter designed by Stan Huntingford of Vancouver, British Columbia who is famous for his well-founded cruising yachts which include the Slocum 43, a close sister in design and performance to this vessel. Zephyr   is a serious blue-water, world sailing, liveaboard cruiser with excellent sailing capabilities in both light and heavy weather. She has a surprising amount of storage in separate lockers, drawers and shelves.

The hull is fashioned with a canoe stern providing excellent stability in down-wind tracking and lumpy seas. Mr. Huntingford’s Passport 42 is an easily managed blue-water cruiser with quick response provided by its modified fin and skeg underbody. The stainless steel propeller shaft is protected within the skeg, propulsion is provided by a three bladed bronze prop. The hull is white with molded grooves in the fiberglass to show as carvel planking. The cove stripe and boot stripe are both navy blue with a teak rub rail just below the cove stripe.

The teak decks have been removed and replaced with Kiwigrip non-skid paint over fiberglass. A teak cap rail surrounds the wide side decks from bow to stern. A teak eyebrow trim accents the cabin house with sturdy teak handrails on the cabin top house. Stainless granny bars at the base of the mast make working there safer while underway in heavy weather. Side decks are wide and easily navigated. There are bronze and aluminum chocks in the toe rail and large stainless cleats on deck. Back in the cockpit, the teak decking remains to maintain the traditional feel. Her cockpit is spacious and comfortable, with a tall coaming that provides good security. There is a large lazarette locker and a large storage locker beneath each cockpit seat. A large Iverson Designs dodger protects the forward cockpit seats and the companionway. It is sturdy with excellent visibility. A stainless bimini frame is mounted on the stern with a stainless radar post with the GPS and VHF antenna and a forward-facing flood light also mounted on it. An aluminum boom for hoisting the outboard motor is also mounted here. Stainless brackets for the windvane are mounted on the transom. A teak cockpit table is easily stowed at the forward end of the cockpit below the seat and easily retrieved when at anchor.

about our sailboat, SV Gemini

DC1DBE25-E9BD-4786-829B-2AC7E92BB7B5.jpg

This is our floating home, Gemini, a Passport 42 from 1986.

Designed by Stan Huntingford and built in Taiwan, Gemini has a superior construction & will take us safely around the world (if we treat her right). She is built like a tank, while still maintaining her  maneuverability with her modified fin keel. Her interior is spacious while still cozy and warm, her old growth Burmese teak has been crafted into beautiful louvered cabinetry throughout the cabin.

We feel so lucky to have found Gemini and that we've had  the   privilege of living aboard such a well-built and thought out cruising boat. After pouring our hearts and souls into refitting her for extended cruising, we've said goodbye to the comforts of marina life and are cruising full-time.

Ok, enough babbling. Here are the nitty-gritty specs:

Gemini Specs

Year built:1986

Hull #: 47 out of 51 built

Hull Type: Modified fin keel w/skeg hung rudder

Fuel: 85 gals

Holding Tank: 16 gals

When we purchased Gemini, she was well kept but very bare-bones: Manual windlass, hank-on sails, ancient radar and no navigation electronics. This was a blessing in disguise, since starting with a pretty clean slate meant we could be extremely intentional with each upgrade. We are big believers in getting off the dock and sailing as often as you can, instead of downing the boat for months on end with project after project. By using your boat throughout the refit/cruising prep process, you get to know exactly what types of upgrades are necessary.  In the past 8 years of living aboard (4 of those spent aboard Gemini), we've sailed over 10,000 ocean miles while still tackling countless projects in-between each ocean adventure.

GEMINI IS OUR BABY AND WE'VE POURED OUR HEARTS AND SOULS INTO HER.

Cruising Logbook

Home

This is the log of our adventures aboard ‘Boundless’, our much beloved 1984 Passport 42. We bought the boat in August 2017 with the view to one day leaving the San Francisco Bay, taking a left hand turn, and not looking back.

After two years of completing a substantial refit of the boat and modernizing its systems, we headed out the Golden Gate on October 23rd, 2019, and have set upon achieving those cruising objectives, starting with the 2019 Baja Haha cruiser rally to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.

We spent the summer and fall of 2020 cruising the Sea of Cortez, late November and December undertaking two substantial remaining refit projects, and crossed to mainland Mexico in January 2021.

Given the limitations presented by the pandemic it was not possible to move further south than Mexico in the 2020/21 season, so having gone as far south as Puerto Vallarta, we returned to the Sea of Cortez for the summer of ’21.

Back on our intended course in October 2021, we set our sights south through the remainder of México, on to Costa Rica, and achieved our goal of transiting the Panama Canal in May of 2022 .

Returning to Boundless in October after a summer in Canada, our plans were ‘yet to be determined’, and the only definite goal for this 22/23 season was to explore the beautiful San Blas Islands. Two trips and a bit of soul-searching we decided to sell Boundless, and return to Canada more permanently to spend time with family, and try our hand at a bit of homesteading. Boundless has been a part of our lives for over five years and our home for three. We have traveled over 8,500 nm together and had an absolute blast. We have created memories and experiences that have changed our lives and will last forever.

“For the most part, a sailboat navigates through its world of wind and water not leaving a single trace of its passage. Nothing is consumed. Nothing is altered. The winds and the water are left in exactly the same condition for the next user.” Michael B. McPhee
