55.78m (183') luxury motor yacht ALUCIA is an extraordinary expedition and submersible support vessel, originally built in 1974 by Auroux and completely refitted and modernised in 2016. She was refitted by Diverse Projects in New Zealand and features warm and functional interiors with luxury amenities by Joe Artese. ALUCIA is able to accommodate twelve guests over 6 cabins and has a crew of 19.

The main deck aft exterior stores the tenders which can be launched and retrieved via a Davit crane, while the upper deck aft has a full-beam helipad which can be used for sunbathing and exercise. The bow section has storage space for tenders and water toys, while above the Portuguese deck allows guests to relax on the sofa in front of the helm station.

The flybridge is shaded by a canvas awning and along the sides, there are hammocks, exercise equipment, a casual alfresco dining table and a larger alfresco dining table to seat 12 guests.

The interiors underwent a comprehensive refit from Auckland-based Diverse Projects and the entire hull was repainted along with engine and machinery services, systems upgrades from the bridge to the tank deck and a rebuilding of several submarines. Pale wooden panelling complements the cool and calm colour scheme used in the guest quarters and communal areas.

The main deck forward contains the crew accommodation, galley and mess with a staircase in the centre connecting the floors. Guest accommodation is located on the upper deck aft and consists of four twin cabins, a VIP stateroom and an Owner's cabin, all with en-suite facilities. The Captain's cabin and an office are placed to the aft.

ALUCIA Specifications

The bridge deck interior hosts a spacious lounge and there is a port-side aft oval dining table to seat up to 12 guests, plus a massive corner sofa and two plush armchairs to form the lounge beside the floor-to-ceiling windows to starboard. A TV is integrated into the aft starboard wall and there are three large armchairs for comfortable viewing.

2 x Cummins KTA50M2 1600 HP engines provide a cruising speed of 11 knots and a top speed of 12 knots.

Yacht Accommodation

Accommodation aboard ALUCIA includes six cabins offering superyacht-quality amenities. All staterooms feature ensuite bathroom facilities with a shower, granite counters, carpeting, beautiful maple joinery, air-conditioning, a desk, storage space as well as audio/visual communication. Four guest cabins are fitted as twins, with two of them featuring ‘pop-up’ bunk beds. The master suite and the VIP suite offer guests additional storage space, a seating area and double sinks in the ensuite bathroom with double shower and Jacuzzi tub respectively. The master stateroom offers a king-sized bed and the VIP queen-sized.

We are very proud to present the private expedition yacht and submersible support ship ALUCIA. Unique in the world today, she is a true hybrid combining state of the art exploration, scientific and filmmaking capabilities with five-star accommodation and comfort. Originally bearing the name Nadir, she was commissioned as the support ship for the French research submersible Nautile. Under the management of IFREMER, Jacques Cousteaus government sponsored research organization, she has shown a long and successful track record in the field of global, deep oceanographic research and under her current owner for the last eight years she continues that. The deck above houses the ships bridge and a large salon. The lounge/salon has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the submersible launching A-frame. A unique wall is composed of luminescent panels, adding to the open feel of the space. Design styling carries the carpet and joinery of the rooms below and adds three distinct seating arrangements, providing areas for reading, socializing, planning or watching the 42 built-in flat-screen TV. A flexible banquet table provides meeting or dining space for 12 or more people and is serviced by a discreet and stylish bar with integral dishwasher, fridge and wine cooler and dumbwaiter. A stainless-steel spiral staircase provides access to the fly bridge/sundeck above via a windowed foyer in the ships stack. The fly bridge or sundeck is ALUCIAs party-deck. Half clad in artificial teak with the remainder covered in a tough, attractive, nonskid, it allows rail viewing on all sides and supports two food service areas one comprised of a huge, custom, stainless steel barbecue with dumbwaiter access to the galley below. Comfortable furniture for eating and lounging can be added and the area is specially lit for nights in the tropics. A Lexan windscreen overlooks the large sundeck in front of the bridge.

Ray Dalio announces OceanX and M/V ‘Alucia2’

New initiative and vessel aim to revolutionise ocean research and media….

Superyacht owner and philanthropist Ray Dalio, with his son Mark, director James Cameron and a number of other leading scientific partners, announced the launch of OceanX yesterday. This initiative, to further explore the ocean for educational and scientific purposes, will be undertaken by a brand new vessel, 85m M/V Alucia2 . The project aims to follow the huge success of ocean exploration carried out by Dalio’s existing research vessel, 56m M/V Alucia .

In a statement about Alucia2 and OceanX, Dalio illustrated his passion for conservation and understanding more about our oceans. "I believe that ocean exploration is more exciting and important than space exploration [and] we are on a mission to show people that." The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is among the many philanthropic partners of the project.

Alucia2 will be delivered in 2019 and was originally built as a deep-sea diving survey vessel in 2010. According to reports, she will be “the most advanced science and media vessel ever built” and her refit has been designed by Gresham Yacht Design. Features of the vessel include marine research labs, media equipments (and an entire media centre), manned and autonomous deep-sea submersibles, as well as a range of helicopters and drones. James Cameron, known for his filmography and ocean exploration, was consulted throughout the development of the media centre. "With OceanX and Alucia2 , we will reignite global passion for and curiosity about the ocean in our global, digitally-connected age,” said Cameron. In addition to hosting scientists and media teams, OceanX will conduct virtual classes and museum exhibitions for people across the world.

Ray Dalio is founder of OceanX and the president of Dalio Philanthropies. His son, Mark, is the founder and creative director of OceanX Media, who worked with the BBC team behind the Blue Planet II series. In a conversation with The Superyacht Report last year, Alex Flemming, co-CEO of marine operations for the family office that operates M/V Alucia, revealed the driving force behind Dalio’s entrance into the yacht market. “He is a very intelligent man and he was always fascinated by the scientific community. He was introduced to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and he was so fascinated and taken aback by what they do – and what they achieve – that he had the idea to buy a boat.”

Flemming also echoed the importance of Dalio’s focus on ocean – not space – exploration through engaging media content. “We are trying to make it interesting, and fun, so that it makes difference and people actually say, ‘that’s cool’. Not only promoting the project and the idea, but also make people aware of what is going on. 70 per cent of our planet is ocean, and we only know about 15 per cent of it, how does that make sense? We’re spending more money trying to populate the moon than we are in our ocean backyard.” The impact of Dalio on the superyacht industry’s attitude to ocean conservation and scientific research is undeniable. Hopefully, his commitment to these causes will inspire more owners to follow his example. And as M/V Alucia has been at the forefront of many exciting ocean discoveries in recent years, we eagerly await the successes of OceanX and M/V Alucia 2 .
