Our Promise

By putting your trust in Quay Crew, you can trust us to:

  • Be honest and transparent – if you’re not suited to the role or the culture of the yacht, we’ll tell you; and if the yacht isn’t offering a competitive salary or package, we’ll consult with them too.
  • Give career advice – on the roles you’re currently suitable for, how you can improve your CV and what secondary skills could make you stand out.
  • Never send your CV on-spec – we’ll always speak 1-2-1 with a candidate before putting them forward for a role and follow up with verbal references from past yachts and employers.
  • Communicate – at every stage of the process, whether it’s good or bad news.

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Superyacht Deckhand job description

Superyacht deckhand

A deckhand is the entry level for almost all professional crew jobs on superyachts. The deckhand position will encompass many responsibilities, but most importantly, he/she will maintain the exterior of the yacht and keep it in pristine condition at all times. You could be the only deckhand on board, but on larger superyachts there may be as many as five or more deckhands working.

Your day will typically start very early and end very late. You will be involved in a number of tasks, including:

  • Fibreglass restoration
  • Line handling
  • General exterior maintenance
  • Driving tenders and/or toys
  • Escorting guests when they use the toys
  • Diving (if qualified)
  • Helping interior staff serve meals or clean cabins
  • Occasional assistance with the Chef in the galley

The deckhand is also normally responsible for the general day to day operation and maintenance of jet-skis and other toys and tenders.

The deckhand’s role is incredibly varied and gives an excellent opportunity to learn about the general operations on board a superyacht.

Required Skills and Experience

Deckhands do not have to have boating qualifications but having them is an asset. General seafaring skills are expected. Deckhands should ideally have some knowledge and experience of navigation, boat handling, engines and radio equipment.

Any skills or experience in any of the above mentioned tasks would be a distinct advantage over other candidates.

If you’ve never worked on a yacht before, it doesn’t mean that you are unsuitable for consideration.  Captains have, in the past, hired crew with a variety of backgrounds such as hospitality and hotels, cruise lines, recent graduates, mechanics, engineers, tour leaders, divers and anyone who can prove they have the willingness to learn and the right work ethic.

Required Certification

Qualifications and certification are not normally needed to become a deckhand – experience is generally more important, but RYA qualifications such as Day Skipper, Power Boat Level 2 and VHF/SRC Radio Operators Certificate or IYT Tender Driving Licence may be beneficial. As an alternative the MCA approved Yacht Rating Course is acceptable. As you progress you will be expected to achieve the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate.

You may be required to hold the MCA STCW Basic Safety certification, and if you wish to progress from the deckhand role this certification is likely to be required for higher positions.

Salary Range

At entry-level a deckhand could expect to earn between £1,250 and £1,750 per month. An experienced deckhand could expect up to around £1,750 or £2,000 per month.

Career Progression

Superyacht Crew A Deckhand is an excellent place to start your career on board a superyacht as it gives you a good grounding in day-to-day operations.

A Deckhand may choose to continue working in a deck role, and progress to the position of Bosun. Alternatively he/she may prefer to move into the Engineering department as an Engineer, or get into the Service department as a Steward/ess.

Marine Industry Experience as a Deckhand on board a superyacht would be valuable in a whole host of other crew positions. For example in the Leisure sector holiday companies employ both engineering and stewarding crew for their flotillas.

How to find a job in the yachting industry

06 February 2018

The last thirty years has seen an enormous growth in the number of jobs available in the yachting industry. Whether you’re an MCA qualified Deck Officer or Master Mariner, a Yachtmaster or a humble Day Skipper , opportunities exist. You don’t even have to be a sailor, with many larger yachts now employing stewards and stewardesses, engineers, nannies, cooks, dieticians and chefs, making them all but small private cruise ships

Smaller sailing yachts will usually require the stewardess or the engineer/bosun to also be a sailor and able to stand watch safely. Larger yachts are more likely to have qualified deck officers and deckhands for that purpose although pretty much all professional crew are now required to hold the STCW as a bare minimum.

To work as a even a deck hand in most cases or as a deck officer, engineer, mate or skipper you will require specific additional qualifications. On British registered yachts (and many other flagged vessels worldwide) the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) and the RYA ( Royal Yachting Association ) offer courses of varying complexity dependent on your level of experience.

In addition to crewing private yachts, there are also opportunities to skipper or crew smaller vessels inshore (for example day trips, etc) or to teach others how to sail, either on the water or onshore. There are also fringe areas where a qualified and experienced sailor might just be a perfect fit. For example, marina management or crew recruitment.

In the past, securing a job on a private yacht could have been the result of a ‘dock walk’ asking skippers and their crew if jobs were going. This does still happen and personal networking is still an effective part of searching for that perfect job but, more and more, as with so many other parts of modern life, keeping in touch with people and building a network through Facebook is more effective in many cases. After all, if you are in Cowes, finding out about that job opening up in Antigua requires long distance communication and a wide social network.

Other than social networking, there are more traditional methods available to the wannabe ‘deckhand’ or ‘hostie’. They include;

THE YACHTING PRESS

Magazines such as Yachting World have large classified sections selling boats and advertising a plethora of marine services. They also advertise jobs and recruitment consultancies so, for the complete newbie, it’s worth picking up a few yachting and superyacht magazines to get an idea of what’s available right now.

THE INTERNET

It will not surprise you to know that jobs are available on the internet! All the main recruiters have a web presence and social media has several groups available to those searching for jobs or unpaid experience. Just be careful. There are rogues on Facebook pretending to be looking for staff when really they have other intentions. Watch out for scammers and stalkers alike!

RECRUITMENT CONSULTANTS

There are a huge variety of recruitment consultants specialising in the yachting industry. Many specialise in subsets, such as large super yachts, sailing yachts, smaller sailing and motor yachts, etc.

Several sail training centres also run databases and recruitment services for alumni.

The motor and sail driven industries are fairly well defined and not all skills are easily transferable. What is for sure though is that crew on motor yachts can generally expect to earn more. For more details on crew agencies, click here.

SOCIAL NETWORKING (IN PERSON) - THE DOCK WALK

Still an effective way to secure that next position, being on the ground when people are needed is a very effective way of getting your next job. Many people will migrate to the seasonal destinations around the World at the appropriate time of the year, aiming to secure gainful employment.

In April/May the Mediterranean is starting to be repopulated and towns like Cannes, Antibes and Mallorca are excellent locations to walk the dock. In more recent years ‘crew houses’ have become more mainstream. Effectively specialist hostels (some more luxurious than others), crew houses are a cost effective way to get somewhere and stay there cheaply until you get a job.

At the end of the Mediterranean Season (September / October / November), Mallorca and Antibes are again active hubs as many yachts go into refit or strike out to the West Indies, perhaps via Gran Canaria. The ARC is an opportune way to cross the Atlantic for free if you are a sociable and competent crew mate although, in most cases, the roles available are likely to be unpaid and on smaller, private yachts.

In The West Indies St. Maarten, Antigua - and Rodney Bay, St Lucia in December, are great hunting grounds as is Auckland (New Zealand), Papeete (Tahiti) and San Diego (USA) in the Pacific. Florida and Annapolis on the East coast of the States are worth considering, although you will need a B1/B2 US Visa in many cases if you are joining a boat in the US.

In all cases, knowing where the crew bars are and mixing with crew is a great way to get ‘in’. But remember, this can be a help and a hindrance. In the same way that you’d never walk the dock looking like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards and stinking of booze, neither should you pick a bar full of potential employers and work colleagues to go on your bi-annual alcohol-fuelled cocktail marathon! Be sensible.

PAID / UNPAID WORK & EXPERIENCE

In addition to paid work, there are various websites that offer unpaid positions on yachts. In large part these are likely to be skippers or owners looking for delivery crew but not always. Many owners of racing boats also source crew this way. One well-established website for this type of opportunity is www.crewseekers.net

Other websites include www.noonsite.com for cruisers and www.oceancrewlink.com for people participating in the ARC or World ARC. If you are interested in building more miles try contacting some of the delivery companies such as www.halcyonyachts.com   Many offer crew with basic competence an opportunity to crew with food and boat costs paid.

Why are thousands of video game workers losing their jobs?

In the last four months alone, more than 8,000 people who make video games have lost their jobs around the world, including in the UK. At the same time, the UK's gaming industry is growing - so what's going on?

During lockdown, 61% of us played video games, according to Ofcom. Pic: iStock

"I had just woken up and I got an email that said, 'We're going to have a company-wide meeting'. I knew right away."

James, not his real name, was visiting his family earlier this year when he saw the message.

"I started thinking about everything I was set to lose."

He had worked as a game designer at one of the UK's biggest video game studios for nearly a decade. It was a job he loved and had dreamt of since he was nine years old. But recently he had been worried.

All around him, friends in the gaming industry were being let go.

"My mind was racing, what could I do? I wasn't going to be the only one job-seeking at the moment because there were so many layoffs. They all happened at the same time."

He went to the meeting, where his worst fears were confirmed. The company's chief executive said around 25% of people at the studio would be cut. James was one of them.

Gaming is an anxious world right now. There's been more than 8,000 jobs cut globally since the start of this year and in March, the number of available jobs in the UK hit a record low, according to the report Games Jobs Live.

But in London, as the BAFTA Games Awards 2024 rolled around last week , gamers could just enjoy themselves.

It was a night of glitz and glam with a black-tie dress code. The red carpet was laid along London's South Bank and hundreds of gaming's elite turned out.

The team behind Baldur's Gate 3, the dungeons and dragons hit that went on to scoop Best Game, wandered the carpet taking selfies.

Nadji Jeter, the actor who played Spiderman in the latest game version of the comics, had come to London for the first time for the event.

"Oh my God, I'm so nervous," he told Sky News, before going on to win the leading role trophy for his performance.

Comedian Phil Wang , who was hosting the night, swooned over legends whose games he'd played as a child.

'Seeing people I adore struggling is rough'

But the gaming world is tight-knit. Workers often have to move to new cities and towns for jobs, so colleagues can form a huge part of people's social circles. The redundancies weren't far from people's minds.

"Seeing people in the industry that I adore, who work hard and are damn talented, seeing them struggling is really rough," said Baldur's Gate 3 narrator Amelia Tyler.

"I think we'll pull ourselves out of it, but it's going to take a while."

Mass redundancies have hit the industry hard for the last two years. More than 10,500 people working in video games around the world lost their jobs in 2023. More than 8,500 jobs went in 2022.

People hoped things would improve in 2024 but four months into the year, another 8,000 jobs have gone, and the UK is far from immune.

More than 8,000 people have lost their job in gaming in the first four months of 2024

'So much institutional knowledge lost'

Around 1,000 people across the country have lost their jobs since the cull began, according to Ukie, the industry trade body. That means more than one in 30 people working in video games in the UK is affected.

Swen Vincke, the founder of the studio that made Baldur's Gate 3, didn't pull any punches.

"It's a stupid thing to do. There's so much institutional knowledge that's being lost and it just doesn't make sense because it's a thriving industry.

"There are more and more people that play games, so you should cherish the developers that are working in it."

He's got a point. Over 40 million people regularly play video games in the UK alone, and the UK industry is growing - it's now worth £7.82bn to the economy.

So what's going on?

One expert, George Osborn, who writes the Video Games Industry Memo, said there are three problems at play; COVID, delays in publishing games, and the cost of living crisis.

"The video games industry has been hit by the COVID effect later than everyone else," he said.

During COVID, when people were shut in their houses with nothing to do, video game sales soared. In just one year, the industry brought in 21% more money around the world, raking in £27.6bn more in 2020 than 2019, according to the global accounting firm PwC.

In response, the industry swelled. Games studios grew rapidly and hired more staff.

"That created a bubble in the industry and there was an overinvestment into games by investors who have since been burned because the market hadn't been quite set," said Osborn.

Lockdowns ended, people stopped buying

The lockdowns ended, people went back outside and they stopped buying as many games to fill their time.

Then there came the delays. At least 60 major games had their release dates delayed in 2021.

Most didn't explain why but developers have since talked about the difficulty of working on these kinds of games remotely and in lockdown. When the games did start to get released, they flooded the market and made it harder for smaller games to get seen.

Alan Wake 2 was one of the biggest games to be released in 2023. Pic: Remedy Entertainment

In 2023, blockbusters The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder all came out, selling millions of copies each. It was a good year for the big games but much harder for everyone else.

James, the developer who was made redundant, said there was an expectation from his bosses that sales would remain at the same level as during COVID.

"It felt to me like the industry is still growing. It just wasn't growing as much as they would like it to."

Like the rest of the world, gaming is also being hit by the cost of living crisis.

"Video game prices haven't changed very much in the past five years," said Osborn.

"That's meant the cost of making games has gone up quite a lot while the market has softened, so even though the industry did really well last year, it wasn't enough."

Things might be looking up...

But there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Ukie has released figures that suggest the industry is growing again.

It hasn't reached pandemic levels of growth, where double digits were the norm, but last year, 4.4% of value was added. Ukie's chief executive Nick Poole, was keen to send an optimistic message.

"When you look at the way games are crossing over into other parts of our culture, what we're seeing is an industry that's come of age."

And for James, there was good news too. Although he lost the job he had thought was stable, he has found a new studio to work at in a city where he has friends. For the first time ever, he asked about the company's finances in his job interview.

Sam Lake (R) poses on the red carpet at the BAFTA Game Awards 2024. Pic: BAFTA

Sam Lake, creator of Max Payne and Alan Wake, had some wisdom to share after over 30 years of work.

"I would like to be hopeful. In my experience, with all these things, it's a pendulum swing. Things get worse and more troubled, or financially we struggle, but so far at least, we have always swung back."
