The best places to dock your superyacht

Life aboard a Super Yacht is undoubtedly a memorable experience. These luxurious boats are equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems  and their crews are accurately trained high-performance teams.

But for the boat to always be in the best conditions, it is essential to perform periodic maintenance in facilities that allow to review, update, repair, and intervene any part of the structure and onboard systems.

There are many docks around the world with the capacity to undertake the inspection and maintenance of vessels. But few of them have professionals, facilities, and equipment that can make the maintenance and repair of Superyachts.

The best places to dock your superyacht by SCS Yachting

In the elite of docks for Superyachts, we find the facilities of Amico & Co , located in the port of Genoa, which recently put launching its modern ShipLift system. This system is capable of removing Mega yachts up to 95 meters from the water and completely repairing large vessels that, without the ShipLift system, would have to stop in dry dock for maintenance.

The revolutionary innovation of the ShipLift system consists of the incorporation of a submersible platform that can raise the vessels from the water to the ground level so that they are housed in a structure dedicated exclusively to that vessel. When the boat is out of the water, a sophisticated mechanism moves the yacht so that professionals can access any part of the structure and accurately perform the necessary repairs.

In addition to technological innovation, the Amico & Co dock is designed in a 100% sustainable manner, all maneuvers have zero environmental impact and zero emissions, with ISO14001 certification .

Awsome Marinas around the globe

How to Make Superyacht Docking and Maneuvering Simpler and Safer

Superyacht crew docking yacht with Yacht Controller

Docking and maneuvering a large yacht in tight harbors has always been a daunting task for captains and crew. The precision required, the potential for mishaps and the stress it can induce are well-known in the world of yachting. Yacht Controller , a brand of The Yacht Group, offers captains a game-changing solution with its wireless yacht control technology. With over two decades of experience and a track record of over 27,000 delivered systems - many of which are on board prestigious superyachts around the world - Yacht Controller has become synonymous with precise and safe yacht maneuvering.

"The flawless proven security and dual-band dependability of Yacht Controller allows captains and crew to confidently control the movement of their yachts from anywhere on board with absolute precision," says Tony Valiente, chief operating officer and managing partner of Yacht Controller.

MAXIMO and SUPREMO: The Future of Yacht Maneuvering

Yacht Controller's systems represent the pinnacle of wireless control technology for yachts, catering to vessels of all sizes, from small boats to superyachts. With MAXIMO designed for boats below 25 meters and SUPREMO for superyachts, these systems employ advanced technology by communicating over proprietary dual-band radio frequency amongst multiple channel combinations scrolling every sixth of a second. It is the first-ever wireless system with Wi-Fi remote accessibility from any smart device to set or modify parameters for incremental or proportional speed control of engines and thrusters.

What sets these systems apart is their customizability, offering a unique experience for captains. With the ability for Wi-Fi remote access for worldwide real-time customer support, users can view, manage and diagnose their MAXIMO or SUPREMO systems from anywhere in the world using any smart device.

Yacht Controller's 64-bit quad-processor receiver scrolls through more than 100 channels to eliminate interference and provide ultimate redundancy and security. There are five pre-set profile engine speed settings to suit onboard conditions immediately, with the flexibility to modify them at any time via a smart device. Firmware upgrades can be transmitted remotely, ensuring that the system is always up to date.

One of the most impressive features is the open-air communication range, which exceeds 200 meters, enabling yacht operators to control their vessels from a considerable distance. Additionally, Yacht Controller provides two-way communication between the remote and receiver, ensuring seamless communication even in challenging conditions. Should significant radio frequency jamming be found in the area, the built-in radio spectrum analyzer's received signal strength indicator (RSSI) allows for adjustments to block signal jamming. This is a first of its kind in the marine wireless market.

Compatibility and Multi-Functionality

Yacht Controller's MAXIMO and SUPREMO systems are designed to seamlessly integrate with various navigational equipment, including Garmin, Raymarine and other common onboard systems. This compatibility simplifies the user experience and provides easy viewing and control.

Moreover, these systems offer multi-functional capability, making them suitable for a wide range of yacht equipment, including dual anchors, swim platforms, cable masters and more. This adaptability makes MAXIMO and SUPREMO indispensable tools for yacht owners and captains.

SUPREMO: Next-Level Superyacht Control

Superyacht owners and captains will be particularly thrilled with Yacht Controller's SUPREMO system, designed for larger vessels. The SUPREMO's antenna is a CPU-powered transceiver with CAN bus data cable communication, resulting in faster command response and increased range. In contrast, other systems rely on simple coaxial cables that reduce signal quality as cable length increases.

The SUPREMO system boasts greater computer and communication power with significant channel expansion, offering even more redundancy than the standard MAXIMO series.

"The new generation MAXIMO and SUPREMO series, now powered by a 64-bit quad-core processor, has yet again raised the bar in wireless control,” Valiente notes. “It opens doors to many other features to come over the next decade and our commitment to our ongoing synergies with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the market. This new series of Yacht Controller allows boaters to customize their user profiles for an individualized experience.”

Requirements for Superyacht Docking

docking a superyacht

When it comes to docking a superyacht, there are a few key considerations that need to be taken into account.

From the size of the vessel to the location of the dock, there are a range of factors that affect the cost and potential for a successful docking.

The first factor to consider is the size of the vessel.

Superyachts vary in size, from small vessels that measure just a few feet to large ones that can measure up to over 200 feet.

Of course, the larger the vessel, the more dock space it requires and the more costly it is to dock it.

The second factor to consider is the location of the dock.

Different countries and regions have different rules and regulations regarding the docking of superyachts.

Additionally, some regions may have more favorable docking conditions than others, such as the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands, the Caribbean, and the Greek Isles.

In the US, some of the most popular places for superyacht docking include Miami, the Florida Keys, California, and the Gulf Coast.

The third factor to consider is the type of dock.

Different types of docks offer different benefits, and the type of dock needed for a superyacht depends on the size of the vessel and the type of activities it will be used for.

For example, a superyacht may require a marina with a floating dock or a pier with a mooring buoy.

The fourth factor to consider is the cost of docking.

Docking a superyacht can be expensive, depending on the size of the vessel and the type of dock needed.

Additionally, some docks may also charge additional fees for services such as waste disposal, water, electricity, and fuel.

Finally, its important to consider the safety of the vessel when docking a superyacht.

A reputable dock should offer security measures such as CCTV, security guards, and access control systems.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the dock is capable of handling the size and weight of the vessel, as well as the size of the crew.

By taking these factors into consideration, it is possible to find the perfect dock for a superyacht.

Docking a superyacht is an exciting experience, and by following these guidelines, it can be a safe and enjoyable one.

Insurance for Superyacht Owners

For superyacht owners, insurance is an important part of owning and operating a vessel.

Superyachts are expensive investments, and proper insurance coverage is essential.

Insuring a superyacht requires a few key components, including hull and machinery coverage, pollution liability, and third-party liability.

Hull and machinery coverage is the most basic and important type of insurance for superyacht owners, as it provides protection for the vessel itself and its equipment.

Pollution liability covers any environmental damage that the superyacht may cause, and third-party liability helps to cover any potential legal liabilities that may arise from the vessels activities.

In addition to these types of coverage, superyacht owners must consider if towing coverage is necessary.

Towing coverage helps to protect the vessel and its crew in the event of a breakdown or emergency.

While towing coverage is not required, it can be invaluable in the event of an emergency.

Finally, superyacht owners should also consider the risks associated with where the vessel will be docked.

Different ports and marinas may have different requirements for insurance coverage, so it is important for owners to research any port or marina they plan to dock at and make sure they have the necessary insurance coverage.

Having the right insurance coverage is essential for any superyacht owner.

Taking the time to research and understand the different types of coverage available can help ensure that owners have the protection they need.

Final Thoughts

Owning a superyacht is an incredible experience, and the fantastic destinations available around the world make it even more enjoyable.

Whether youre looking to cruise the Mediterranean or explore the Florida Keys, theres a perfect destination for you.

Furthermore, there are plenty of other options available to those who dont want to purchase their own vessel, such as renting one or taking a vacation aboard someone elses.

Its important to make sure youre aware of the docking requirements and insurance options when it comes to superyachts.

Now that youve learned more about where to dock your superyacht, why not start planning your next adventure?

Yacht Docking Costs: A Comprehensive Guide

A blog post header image for a post titled "Yacht Docking Costs: A Comprehensive Guide" showing two large yachts docked in a Mediterranean marina.

Docking a yacht is an essential aspect of yacht ownership, offering security and accessibility for your vessel. However, the cost of docking can vary widely based on several factors, including location, size of the yacht, and the amenities provided by the marina. This comprehensive guide aims to shed light on the various expenses associated with yacht docking, helping yacht owners make informed decisions.

Key Factors Influencing Docking Costs

  • Location : The location of the marina plays a significant role in docking fees. Prime locations in sought-after destinations often command higher prices due to their popularity and limited availability.
  • Size of the Yacht : The length and beam of a yacht directly impact docking costs. Larger yachts require more space and often special accommodations, leading to higher fees.
  • Amenities and Services : Marinas offering extensive amenities such as electricity, water, security, Wi-Fi, and on-site maintenance will typically charge more for their docking spaces.
  • Seasonality : Seasonal demand can affect docking prices, with peak boating seasons seeing an increase in rates due to higher demand.

Average Docking Costs

The cost of docking a yacht can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per month. For example, a small yacht (up to 30 feet) may cost anywhere from $300 to $800 per month to dock, while larger luxury yachts (over 100 feet) could see fees in the range of $3,000 to $10,000 per month or more, depending on the location and services provided.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Docking

  • Short-term Docking : Ideal for travelers or those looking to dock for a few days to weeks. Rates are often calculated per foot, per day.
  • Long-Term Docking : More cost-effective for those planning to stay at a marina for several months or the entire season. Many marinas offer discounted rates for long-term commitments.

Additional Costs to Consider

  • Utilities : Charges for water, electricity, and other utilities may be billed separately or included in the docking fee.
  • Maintenance and Repairs : Access to on-site maintenance and repair services can add to the overall cost.
  • Insurance : Some marinas require proof of insurance, which could lead to additional insurance costs for yacht owners.

Tips for Reducing Docking Costs

  • Compare Marinas : Research and compare prices and amenities of different marinas.
  • Negotiate Rates : Don’t hesitate to negotiate long-term docking rates.
  • Join a Yacht Club : Membership in a yacht club can offer discounted docking rates and other benefits.
  • Consider Off-Peak Seasons : Docking in the off-season may provide lower rates.

The cost of docking a yacht involves various factors and can significantly vary. By understanding these factors and considering the tips provided, yacht owners can find the best docking solutions to fit their needs and budget. Whether you own a small yacht or a grand vessel, the key to managing docking costs lies in careful planning and informed decision-making.

Remember, the joy of yachting comes with its share of responsibilities and costs. However, with the right approach, you can ensure that your yachting experience is both enjoyable and economically feasible.

The best superyacht marinas in Miami

One island park.

In Miami, everyone wants a piece of the waterfront. Condos, restaurants and private homes all try to stake claim on the ever-disappearing property by bay (and sea). Luckily, in a water-centric city like Miami, marinas take up a good portion of this prime real estate .

With dockage available in every waterfront neighbourhood, you can decide what amenities you seek, how much privacy you desire and which part of Miami you’d like to be based to explore this exciting city .

1. One Island Park

The One Island Park compound opened in Miami Beach in November last year and is designed solely for superyachts and is able to accommodate yachts measuring up to 244 metres in its deep water berths.

Visitors to One Island Park will enjoy a vast range of VIP concierge services, as well as a high level of exclusivity. The new compound was designed to showcase both the area and the best standards of service, meaning it will become an extremely popular spot for private owners, while its location means that clients can enjoy the thriving art scene, the beaches and the nightlife of Miami.

Island Gardens

The new superyacht marina Island Gardens Deep Harbour is situated on Watson Island and is capable of berthing 50 superyachts measuring up to 167 metres. The retail and residential aspects of the marina are not expected to be completed for the next two years, but the marina is fully operational with 1,524 linear metres of capacity with drafts of 5.4-6.4 metres deep.

Coconut Grove

Home to the U.S. Sailing Center and multiple yacht clubs, Coconut Grove is a hotbed for yachting activity. The 582-slip Dinner Key Marina, which survived the worst of the hurricane damage in September, sits right in the centre, and only steps away from the shops and restaurants of “The Grove.” The protected marina hosts yachts up to 38 metres with two metres of draft.

Sea Isle Marina

The Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Centre is a great place for yachts up to 42 metres to tie-up and be in close distance to what downtown has to offer with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the performing arts and the arena where the Miami Heat play right around the corner. There are also great restaurants right on site, as well as fuel and a ship’s store.

Miamarina at Bayside

Surrounded by shops, dining and even an outdoor auditorium, the Miamarina at Bayside is a lively marina. The marina has 130 slips and hosts yachts up to 60 metres and offers easy access to both the Atlantic through Government Cut and to Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys to the south.

Epic Marina

Epic Marina is surely one of the plushest in Miami and despite being hit hard during Hurricane Irma, is once again capable of hosting superyachts up to 95 metres. In the shadow of Miami’s luxe Epic Residences & Hotel, the marina isn’t short on high-end amenities. Guests can enjoy sumptuous meals at on site restaurants Area 31 and Zuma.

Sunset Harbour Yacht Club

Set off the Venetian Causeway on Biscayne Bay, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club offers ample dockage outside of the hubbub of the Miami Beach scene. Catering to yachts up to 45 metres with 125 deepwater slips, the designated “clean marina”, an initiative started by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has some great amenities including a pool and fitness centre. Fuel can be delivered and it is loacated right around the corner from a large Publix supermarket for easy provisioning.

Indian Creek Marina

Across from Miami’s iconic and historic Fountainbleau Resort on Collins Avenue, Indian Creek Marina at the Fountainbleau Resort (home to one of the best hotel spas to visit in Miami ) can host yachts up to 76 metres. In February, this waterway is lined with yachts during the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show. The rest of the year, it’s open to transiting yachts and makes a great destination marina that is in close distance to Miami’s finest spas and eateries, as it's located right across from the beach.

Miami Beach Marina

In the south end of Miami Beach, the full-service Miami Beach Marina has 400 slips for yachts up to 76 metres. The marina offers direct access to Government Cut, a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, which allows better access to the Port of Miami. Likewise, it’s only moments to the best of what South Beach has to offer; the beach and the best restaurants, nightlife and spas are just steps away.

Private Marinas

Yachtsmen seeking a private marina experience while in Miami should look no further than these havens:

The exclusive private island community of Fisher Island Club, across from Miami Beach, is ‘members only’, but sponsorship (from a member or the dockmaster) allows temporary membership for yachts up to 76.2 metres in length to tie up in the marina. And their owners can enjoy all the perks of the club, including the beach club, spa, tennis centre, hotel, restaurants and PB Dye-designed golf course.

Midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Aventura, Turnberry Isle Marina Yacht Club accommodates 117 yachts up to 45-metres. Amenities include 24-hour security, a private ocean club, pool, spa, several restaurants, and two 18-hole Raymond Floyd-designed championship golf courses.

Boating For Beginners

Docking a Boat For Beginners and What You Should Know

Docking a boat for the first time is probably one of the more nerve-wracking experiences you will have to endure as a boater. I bet practically everyone you talk to will tell you how easy it is to dock a boat, and well, for the most part, they will be right. It really is an easy task as long as you know what you are doing.

I’ve put together a guide below in this article to help explain how to dock a boat so that when you try it for the first time it won’t feel as overwhelming.

Steps For Coming Alongside a Dock

Step 1: line up the approach.

step 1 and 2 docking a boat

Step 2: Keep It Slow

A common mistake that most new boaters make is that they come in way too fast. As you are approaching the dock, use your forward and reverse gears to help maintain the proper speed you are looking for. On a twin-engine vessel, you can switch back and forth between the engines to help you slowly come in.

Step 3: Swing Your Boat In

step 3 docking a boat

Step 4: Finishing Touch

step 4 docking a boat

Step 5: Secure Your Boat

With the boat sitting parallel to the dock, you can now turn off the engine and begin to secure it to the dock.  Once the boat is secure, you can begin to let off or let on your passengers.

How To Dock a Boat With a Single Engine

Usually, docking a boat with a single engine is the easiest thing that you can do. The first thing to focus on here is to get the dock lines pre-rigged. At this time you want to have the fenders set and also hung over the side.

It’s a good idea to study the current orientation, as this might end up affecting your docking experience. Make sure that you handle the bow of the boat adequately so you can eliminate the wind force. Ideally, you want to have more control, and that means going against the wind or water currents.

If you have crew members, you want them to be at various strategic spots. These include the stern and the bow, some should even be at the dock lines if possible. Your crew should never put their feet or hands between the boat and any other item, as they can end up with some major injuries. So you need a lot of attention and focus, otherwise, you will end up with problems.

As you get closer and closer to docking a boat, you need to line it up for the approach. Slow down but maintain steerage if possible, as that will work a lot. You can also lower the canvas enclosure, sports towers or the bimini tops, as that will help you reduce the wind effect. It will also give you more control over the boat, which is what you need in a situation like this.

In case you see that the wind or currents are pushing you against the dock, you want to make the entry as shallow as possible (degrees). It’s important to increase the angle of attack when the weather is good and there are no currents. Don’t move with the wind if you want to get the utmost control, so try to keep that in mind at all costs. Slowness is key if you want to start docking a boat the right way. Make small adjustments as you get closer and closer to the dock.

A good trick that most people use is to put the engine into and out of gear. If you see any issues, abort the docking procedure and try again. The last thing you want is to deal with are any major issues.

In order to complete the process, you will have to stop the forward momentum of the boat. You can do that simply by delivering a tiny bit of power in reverse. The attempt is to stay in a line if possible. Angle the engine at the dock and then make the reverse approach if possible. Tie off and ensure that the dock lines are set, this way you can be sure that you won’t come in contact with other boats. Shut down the engine only when the boat is 100% secure. Otherwise, you will end up dealing with problems.

Secure the lines and make sure that the ropes are put in tight. Since this is a single engine boat, you don’t need to use lots of ropes, but the more you use, the more secure your boat will be. So try to keep that in mind.

How To Dock a Boat With Twin Engines

If you use this system, the boat is pivoting on the axis. You can put the port engine in reverse and the starboard engine in forwarding movement. When you do this, you will notice that the port engines pull the bow of your boat to the port and the starboard engine ends up pushing the stern to the starboard. It’s still a great system for you to try out and it can actively work well if you handle it appropriately.

Docking a boat with 2 engines is great because you also have an outboard, outdrives or twin inboards with rudders. It’s a good idea to center the steering wheel as the engines will do all the work. The inboards will pivot a boat a lot faster when compared to the outboards. If you use the outboards, you will need to add more power if you want similar results. Which is why using the inboards is a lot easier. But it’s up to you to experiment and see the right approach.

If you get close to the dock, you want to alternate the power distribution as you try to keep everything under control. The trick here is to practice this and apply power to the starboard and the port engines adequately. If you pull alongside, you want the engine that’s farther from the dock as you try to pull the stern in.

Using a single engine or both in tandem is a great idea. But it does require experimentation, mostly because stuff like this can be very difficult to manage and handle. Yet it does have the potential to work very well if you know what you are getting into with stuff like this. So yes, it doesn’t matter if you have 2 or more engines most of the time. Usually, if you have more than 2engines, you will notice that they are paired electronically on the outer engines. However, some models do allow you to configure stuff through the engine controls too. And that’s incredibly interesting and rewarding.

Docking With Thrusters

The thing to consider here is that most of the modern stern and bow thrusters have their own controllers. There are some units that have a controller in the form of a joystick. The appearance of that controller doesn’t really matter, it mostly comes down to how comfortable you are when it comes to using the controller.

Speaking of that, the controllers will use a green arrow to showcase the direction according to how you maneuver the joystick. A good idea here is to use the thrusters sparingly. You want to use them as the means to correct any possible issues if you can. That will make things a lot easier for you, otherwise, you will end up with some issues here and there. Remember, you can always add more power, but if you add too much power, you end up losing control. So it’s a game of patience and focuses more than anything else.

Then there’s the fact that some of the thrusters and more particularly the electrical ones will shut down for a bit or overheat. Which is why you need to use this in short bursts. The chances of dealing with any kind of problems with this sort of thing are pretty much minimal, so try to consider that.

In the end, it all comes down to experimenting and finding the right system and approach that works for you. Sometimes it can be a simple one, other times it can be very difficult. The idea is to study everything and then experiment to see what’s comfortable for you.

How To Dock a Boat In a Tight Slip

If you have to dock in a tight slip, this will complicate things a little bit. The idea here is that a slip is not a very open space. Docks are open on 3 sides, but the slip just has the pier, and that can make it difficult. Show your companion the mooring line and the eye of the line. You want to show the spot that will be placed over the boat’s cleat and explain how you want to pull this thing off. It might end up being a challenge, so try to consider that.

What you want to do is to lower the speed to the point where you have bare steerageway. You want to go slowly, but not too slow as that can be an issue. If you slowed down to the right speed, go to the pier at a 45-degree angle. If you are close to the pier, go into neutral. Shifting the gears and going into neutral is what you want to do if you want to handle the process correctly and potentially avoid any problems.

Now that you are moving, you want to shift the boat away from the pier, drop the eye of the line and now move around 2-3 feet from the pier as you shift the motor ahead just a tiny bit. You want to tie off the cleat to the bow of the boat. Do that and then you will be docked.

Tips To Dock a Boat Safely

If you have twin inboards, don’t touch the wheel even if you are tempted. Lower the windage if you are dealing with winds, regardless of their intensity! It’s also a good idea to make sure that you never kill the engines until all the lines are secure. Otherwise, you can end up with problems.

That’s why it should always be ok to abort and try again. You should never rush just to try and get this right. It might work right off the bat, or you might need multiple tries to pull it off. The idea is to know what you are getting into and focus on making this a great experience. It’s all about precision more than anything else.

In the end, docking a boat is only as hard as you make it be. Yes, it won’t work right away and you might have to try it out multiple times. But this is a game of patience and precision, and as you get more experience you can get very good at it. That being said, don’t hesitate to use all the tools and features offered by your boat when it comes to docking. It will enable easier and faster dockings, plus you will avoid any potential damage to your boat as well!

While some yachts are more lenient, embracing both small and large visible tattoos, others may enforce strict policies against them. It’s important to be transparent about any visible tattoos you have. However, there’s no need to disclose tattoos that are not visible.

Is It Hard Being a Deckhand?

It’s not all watersports and driving multimillion-dollar tenders , there are long days of work , loads of physically demanding work and a lot of job/yacht-specific skills to learn which only comes with experience working on Superyachts. There will be a lot of working outdoors in hot weather, a lot of yacht maintenance & cleaning. There will be a lot of hard work however there are so many rewarding experiences and memories that outway by far all the hard work.Make sure you have a can-do, positive attitude and don’t be afraid to help other departments on the yacht if you have spare time , it goes a long way.

How Much Do Junior Deckhands Earn?

Salaries for deckhands can vary widely based on the yacht’s size, the vessel’s itinerary, and the deckhand’s experience.

Junior Deckhands : Starting Salary: Junior deckhands, who are just beginning their careers in the yachting industry, can expect to earn between $2,500 and $3,500 USD per month. These entry-level positions provide the foundational experience necessary for a successful career at sea.

Experienced Deckhands : Salary Range: As deckhands gain experience and demonstrate their skills, their earning potential increases. Experienced deckhands can expect to earn between $3,000 and $4,500 USD per month, depending on the yacht’s size, the complexity of the itinerary, and the specific duties they are tasked with.

Lead Deckhands : Salary Insights: Lead deckhands, who have additional responsibilities and may oversee junior deckhands, can see their salaries increase to between $3,500 and $5,000 USD per month. Their role is more demanding, requiring not only a thorough understanding of deck operations but also leadership skills.

Bosuns: Earning Potential: Bosuns, who are responsible for supervising the deck crew and maintaining the exterior of the yacht, can earn between $4,000 and $6,000 USD per month. Their salary reflects their critical role in ensuring the vessel is in pristine condition and their ability to manage the deck team effectively.

Officers: Salary Range: Officers on yachts have significant responsibilities, including navigation and safety management. Their salaries can range from $5,000 to over $8,000 USD per month, depending on their rank, the size of the yacht, and their specific duties. Chief officers, who are second-in-command, can expect salaries at the higher end of this range.

Captains: Top Earnings: Captains, who have the ultimate responsibility for the yacht, its crew, and its passengers, can earn from $7,000 USD to well over $20,000 USD per month. The captain’s salary is influenced by the size of the yacht, the complexity of the voyages undertaken, and their level of experience.

Factors Influencing Salaries

Yacht Size: Larger yachts typically offer higher salaries due to the increased workload and expertise required. Experience and Qualifications: Crew members with more experience and specialized qualifications can command higher salaries. Charter vs. Private: Crew on charter yachts might earn more due to tips from guests, whereas private yacht crew salaries are often more stable but without the added bonus of tips.

How To Become a Deckhand In Australia?

The process involves specific training and certifications, especially due to the requirements set by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate your way into this career:

1. Understand the Training Requirements

The foundational step to becoming a deckhand in Australia is to complete the necessary safety training. While the training is broadly similar across different countries, there are specific requirements for those intending to work on commercial vessels within Australia:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training: This is a mandatory course for anyone working at sea, covering essential safety procedures, firefighting, first aid, and personal survival techniques. In Australia, the AMSA requires crew members working on commercial vessels to have an AMSA-compliant Certificate of Safety Training (COST).
  • General Purpose Hand: The Australian General Purpose Hand Near Coastal Certificate I in Marine Operations qualification will enable you to work as a deckhand on Australian Registered commercial or private vessels
  • AMSA Medical: If you wish to work on commercial vessels in Australia you will need an AMSA medical to ensure you are fit to work at sea you can find centres to complete the medical here – https://www.sonichealthplus.com.au/services/legislative-medicals/maritime

2. Choose the Right Certification for Your Career Path

Depending on where you intend to work, you’ll need to choose the appropriate certification:

  • For Private and Foreign-Flagged Vessels in Australia: If your goal is to work on private or foreign-flagged vessels within Australia, you can use an MCA-approved STCW 95 certificate issued by the Marshall Islands, which SCA (Superyacht Crew Academy) offers. This certification allows you to work on private and foreign-flagged vessels in Australia, providing a pathway to gain experience before potentially heading overseas.
  • For Commercial Vessels in Australia: If you aim to work exclusively on commercial vessels in Australia, such as charter boats or tour boats, you should obtain an AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (COST). This certification is specifically designed to meet the requirements for crew members on commercial vessels operating within Australian waters.

3. Gain Experience

  • Start Locally: Gaining experience in Australia before heading overseas is highly recommended. Working locally allows you to understand the industry better, build your resume, and develop the necessary skills in a familiar environment.
  • Consider Temp Work: Temporary positions can provide valuable experience and insight into the life of a deckhand. These roles can also offer networking opportunities, which are crucial in the yachting industry.

4. Plan Your Career Path

  • Decide on Your Long-Term Goals: Whether you wish to explore international waters or prefer to stay within Australia, your career goals will influence the type of experience and certifications you should pursue.
  • Continuous Learning: The yachting industry is constantly evolving, so staying updated with the latest safety protocols, regulations, and skills is essential for your career development.

Once you have completed your training sign up to as many Australian agencies as possible to increase your chances of landing a job , you can find a list of the Australian agencies below.

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

  • Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
  • The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
  • Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."

K Superyacht Concept

Having worked on a myriad of residential and hospitality projects over the past few years, Miminat is adept at creating elegant interiors with contemporary decor, sculptural furniture, and statement lighting. K features all of the above and a sleek, stylish exterior. In contrast to the Japanese design influence, the vessel will reportedly display the finest Italian craftsmanship. As the studio puts it, K is “not only a vessel for art, but a masterpiece in and of itself.”

With an interior volume of approximately 300 GT, K offers a spacious interior with five cabins. The owner’s suite is positioned on the main deck, while a VIP and three doubles sit on the lower deck. The crew quarters are also located on the lower deck. Back on the main deck lies a salon with a Japanese-inspired lounge, a bar, and a dining area with a 10-seater table. A spiral staircase leads to a spacious upper deck with a helm and alfresco dining area.

K also offers luxurious hangouts forward and aft. The two-level aft deck centers around a singular infinity pool that waterfalls from one level to the next, while the bow is equipped with a plush lounge and firepit.

Miminat says “various engine options” will give K a maximum speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots. It is hard to imagine the yacht will be overly practical in tumultuous waters—especially given her scant hardtop, hull cutouts, and exposed aft deck—but, hey, at least she’ll look pretty.

6 Tips For Choosing The Best Yacht Charter Experience

C hartering a yacht is the ultimate in custom vacationing, a travel trend that gained traction during COVID and shows no signs of stopping. It offers travelers an opportunity to reach their dream destinations in comfort, style, and exclusivity. The best part: Very often, this bespoke experience can be cheaper than a cruise on a higher-end line you’d have to share with a lot of strangers!

Here are six tips for choosing the best yacht charter experience to suit your style, tastes, and holiday goals!

1. Work Within Your Budget

For most travelers, money is indeed an object, or at least a big consideration. A great charter company has a fleet of vessels at its fingertips, from smaller options such as a catamaran or sailing yacht all the way up to a super yacht with ultra amenities. Their team will work with you to assess your travel budget and offer appropriate options. Keep in mind: There’s all sorts of costs — such as fuel, docking fees, and other extras — that factor into a vacation like this. Some companies roll most of those items into a blanket price, others will calculate them separately or in an overage fee called an “advance provisioning allowance.”

Quick Example: Last year, I sailed on the super yacht Ohana in Croatia. It was part of the Goolets charter group based in Slovenia, which charges a flat weekly accommodation cost; an advance provisioning fee is assessed for food, beverages, and any other extras. The lovely ship slept up to 30 guests quite comfortably and all-in at high season (with APF included) was about $143,000 a week. Steep? Sure, at first glance. But broken down per person, the cost comes out to about $4,300 for each friend or family member. That’s food, drinks, excursions, everything. So, it turns out this kind of travel can indeed be budget-friendly and a good charter will work with you to maximize your money.

2. Location, Location, Location

When considering a private yacht vacation, location is everything. The good news is that charter companies operate all over the world, from the aforementioned Croatia to Australia, the Caribbean, Indonesia, and everywhere there’s sea in between.

If you’ve got a dream destination on your bucket list, a private yacht vacation will help get you there. Choose a charter company that has deep bench strength in the region you want to visit. They’ll have a wide range of yachts and corresponding itineraries for you to consider, ensuring the perfect experience for you and your party. Whether you crave the party scene of Greece, Italy, or the Riviera, or prefer something more far-flung and secluded such as the Seychelles or Maldives, a yacht charter experience will have you covered.

3. Consider Your Entire Party’s Needs

Another big perk of a great charter company: They will handle all the onboard logistics during your cruise, considering your entire party’s interests, must-dos, mobility levels, and even special occasions in an easy, effortless manner. They will interview you ahead of time to assess your interests, then craft an itinerary that suits everyone from start to finish. Keep in mind, they know the local area, plus have access to the best guides and onshore experiences. They will pull out all the stops to make sure everyone in your group has a terrific time.

Culture vultures to party animals will have the perfect vacation planned for them by the yacht charter. From city walking tours led by historians to exclusive access to the best clubs and other hotspots, the charter company and your yacht’s onboard staff are there to make sure it’s all picture-perfect. And if you feel like scrapping your schedule for the day and choosing to stay on the water? That’s just fine, too. The crew will roll with your wishes and honor them.

4. Food And Beverages = Big Deals On Board

No question about it, fabulous food and hand-crafted beverages are central to a terrific private yacht experience. Again, this is where that thorough pre-interview really comes into play. A charter company will consider not just preferences, but any allergies, dietary considerations, or religious restrictions to make sure the chef is prepped accordingly. Expect special snacks and other surprise touches to shine through as well; during my charter, a special birthday cake was procured and presented to a young guest after dinner on his big day.

While the yacht’s team will make sure your food tastes just as spectacular as it looks, they’ll also likely lean into the regional culinary scene with locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats, and of course, seafood! Keep in mind your yacht’s stewards are responsible for keeping bar service running smoothly; by the second day, they knew which mid-afternoon cocktail I fancied (Croatian sparkling wine) and which wines I preferred at dinner. My glass was never empty, until I signaled I was done for the evening.

Bottom Line: Your culinary service should be seamless and impeccable during your time on board.

5. Don’t Forget The Water Toys

Water toys are a big part of a private yacht experience — you’re on the water after all and want to make sure you can get out there and enjoy it. Look for a vessel that has a robust fleet of options that align with your party’s fitness level and recreation (or adrenaline!) goals. Kayaks, rafts, and jet skis are all fairly standard; some yachts also include seabobs, massive water slides, and even inflatable water playgrounds to ensure multi-gen fun on the water.

Pro Tip: Depending on the destination, divers will also want to inquire about scuba or snorkel equipment.

6. Find A “Your Wish Is Their Command” Crew

One of the best parts of a private yacht vacation is the bespoke service you’ll experience every step of the way; the goal is to make sure you want for nothing during your time on board. Craving a cucumber water while you’re lounging on deck? They’ll have it. Want to make sure there are snacks waiting for you after you return from kayaking? Of course! And want to take your dinner to another level? Crews take great pride in creating over-the-top table masterpieces and theme nights that will dazzle everyone in your party.

Of course, crews can and do accommodate more outrageous requests, but don’t be that Below Deck nightmare and ask them for something that’s illegal. It puts them in a terrible position where they could be held liable, and it’s just not cool.

Keep In Mind: A crew that provides excellent service deserves excellent recognition. Be kind and make sure you factor an appropriate tip into your budget. It’s very often not included in the price of the charter or advance provisioning fee.

Ventura Boats Miami Celebrates Grand Opening as South Florida's Premier Yacht Dealer

Ventura Boats Miami, the newest office of The Advantaged Yacht Charter & Sales, is thrilled to announce its grand opening on 05/15 at its prime location in Miami, 401 NW 79th Street, Miami, FL 33150.

Miami, FL - May 25, 2024 —

Founded by Antonio Maldonado in 2004, The Advantaged has evolved from a yacht rental service into a leading yacht dealer, now expanding its footprint with the launch of Ventura Boats Miami.

From Vision to Reality: The Story of The Advantaged Yacht Charter & Sales

docking a superyacht

Antonio Maldonado’s journey began at Club Nautico, a Brunswick-owned company, where he served as vice president. Recognizing a significant demand for larger vessels in Miami, he established The Advantaged. Initially providing temporary yacht rentals for major hotels and brokerage firms such as Denison Yachts, Marine Max, HMY, and Ferretti Group, The Advantaged quickly became a key yacht provider in South Florida.

Over the years, The Advantaged transitioned from a rental service to a broker house, and now to a full-fledged dealership. This strategic evolution led to the creation of Ventura Boats Miami, which represents the esteemed Venture Experience and aims to include additional luxury yacht brands. “The launch of Ventura Boats Miami allows us to offer comprehensive services from rentals to memberships, guiding our clients through the entire yacht ownership journey,” said Antonio Maldonado, Founder and CEO of The Advantaged.

Antonio Maldonado further elaborated on the impact of technological advancements in the industry: "Firstly, technological advancements have substantially reduced the historical lag between the general boating market and the latest technology. This has revolutionized the charter segment, transforming personal yachts into viable income-generating assets. Today, owners can engage in what could be described as a nautical version of Airbnb: purchasing yachts not merely as leisure assets but as integral components of a profitable rental program. This shift not only democratizes ownership but also introduces a new business model whereby boats are seen as sources of revenue rather than solely expenses."

About The Advantaged Yacht Charter & Sales

Founded in 2004, The Advantaged Yacht has grown from a pioneering yacht rental service to a leading yacht dealer in South Florida. The company specializes in buying, selling, and renting luxury yachts, and now represents the prestigious Ventura Experience through its new office, Ventura Boats Miami. The Advantaged is dedicated to providing bespoke, technologically advanced, and eco-friendly yachts, coupled with unparalleled customer service.

“At The Advantaged Yachts we understand the dynamics of this evolving market. Leveraging our two decades of experience with The Advantaged Yachts in the charter industry, we are uniquely positioned to assist our clients during these times. For those looking to offset the costs of yacht ownership, we offer the option to enter our rental program. This not only helps cover the ongoing expenses but can also generate returns, making yacht ownership more sustainable in the current economic climate.”

Innovative Services and Unmatched Customer Experience

Ventura Boats Miami stands out in the luxury yacht market through several key strategies:

Tailored Design and Customization: Each yacht from Ventura Boats Miami is a bespoke creation, designed to reflect the unique tastes and styles of its owner. Using eco-friendly materials and the latest innovations, these yachts are masterpieces on the water.

Advanced Technology: Ventura Boats Miami 's yachts feature state-of-the-art maritime technology, from automated docking systems to advanced navigation and onboard smart systems, ensuring both convenience and safety for owners.

Unmatched Customer Service: Committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience, Ventura Boats Miami offers comprehensive training for new owners and dedicated support during emergencies, including hurricane relocations, ensuring a seamless ownership journey.

“Whether our clients are looking to upgrade their yacht or exit the market, we provide tailored services to meet their needs. Our deep understanding of the market, combined with our established presence in Miami—the boating capital—positions us to offer unparalleled guidance. By choosing us, you're not just selecting a broker; you're partnering with a team of seasoned experts committed to protecting your investment and maximizing your returns.”

Proposed Everglades Island dock draws neighbors' ire before Palm Beach council approval

docking a superyacht

Some neighbors of an in-development corner lot on Everglades Island may not be fans of plans for a new dock that will allow the property's owners to tether a large yacht and smaller boat, but they will have to make peace with the prospect of vessels.

While the plans drew ire from a handful of those neighbors at the Town Council's May 15 Development Review Committee meeting, the council voted 4-1, with member Julie Araskog dissenting, to grant the variances needed to make the dock a reality at 757 Island Drive.

The lot is owned by 757 Island Dr LLC, which is linked to Palm Beach real estate investor Barbara Stovall Smith and her financier husband, Randall Smith of Alden Global Capital, according to people familiar with the property. The Smiths' primary residence is a lakefront home in Midtown. The limited liability company purchased the lot in 2021 from a trust linked to David and Elizabeth Wetherell for $39.5 million.

The property is about nine-tenths of an acre on the southwest corner of Everglades Island, with about 371 feet of waterfront on the west and south sides. It has been vacant since the 1957 home that had been there was razed by Thomas and Eugenia "Jeannie" Tisbo after they bought the lot for $17.5 million in 2013 . Since then, it has been a prime piece of Palm Beach real estate, and one of the few undeveloped lakefront lots left in town.

The council's vote followed the withdrawal of three of the five variances originally requested by the property's owner. Attorney Maura Ziska, the agent for the project, said two of the variances were withdrawn because of the town's recent update to its rules for building docks.

Ziska withdrew the third variance — to allow the dock to extend past the length permitted in the code — during the meeting after hearing opposition from neighbors. The plans originally featured a dock that ran for 110 feet from north to south along the property's west side. The property will move forward with the 69-foot dock allowed by the town's code, Ziska said.

The other two variances will allow for a boat lift for a 30-foot vessel on the dock's north end, and for the dock to be 6 feet wide.

Part of the hardship cited by Ziska in requesting the variances is that the pierhead line, or the line beyond which structures may not be built into navigable waters, is drawn from north to south within the property.

The dock would permit a yacht of up to 110 feet, Ziska said.

Construction of a residence on the property started recently, with a nautical-themed, Art Deco-style design by Daniel Menard of LaBerge & Menard. The Architectural Commission approved the plans in 2022 . The design features a straight-shot view from the glass front doors to the Intracoastal Waterway.

Everglades Island sits south of Midtown and the Everglades Club's golf course. The narrow, manmade island runs north to south with estates along either side of the single road, Island Drive. All the estates except for the four corner lots — of which 757 Island Drive is one — have waterfront either on their east or west sides.

The dock drew opposition from several neighbors, with William Gubelmann representing himself and two neighbors to his south, Carroll Carpenter and Ken Beall, whose properties sit across Island Drive on the island's east side, to the northeast of 757 Island Drive. Palm Beach resident Nader Kazeminy spoke in opposition to the dock, representing his father Nasser Kazeminy, who owns the property to the immediate east of 757 Island Drive.

"We just basically don't like Everglades Island being used as a yacht haven," Gubelmann said. He and his neighbors are concerned that the property's owners are hiding behind a limited liability company and plan to sell for millions, Gubelmann said.

Nader Kazeminy also expressed concerns about the use of a limited liability company to develop the property.

"This begins to get very fishy when someone won't use their names still," he said, while acknowledging that privacy is prized by many in Palm Beach.

"He's not the only one who relishes his anonymity, and I think we need to respect that," Councilwoman Bridget Moran said as Kazeminy later in the meeting persisted in trying to learn more about the property owners.

The size of boat that could be accommodated by the planned dock would overshadow the house, Kazeminy said. "There's a big difference if you have Jamie Dimon for a neighbor or Puff Daddy," he said.

The dock's proposed length was in line with others on the lake in Palm Beach, Ziska said.

When Councilman Ted Cooney asked if the owners have a boat, Ziska replied, "The dock is being designed for boats in concept."

The property to the north has a similar 6-foot-wide marginal dock to what is planned for 757 Island Drive, Ziska noted.

Kazeminy asked the council to deny the variances, but James Murphy, assistant director of planning, zoning and building, said that would leave only about 1 to 2 feet of width for the dock. Ziska countered that would effectively kill the plans.

"A 6-foot marginal dock is consistent with every single marginal dock in this town," she said.

Private island sells in Palm Beach for — gulp — $150 million

Just sold for a recorded $150 million, a mega-mansion at 10 Tarpon Isle on Palm Beach's private Tarpon Island offers southern views straight down the Intracoastal Waterway.

Welcome to The Dirt. I’m Darrell Hofheinz, the real estate writer at the Palm Beach Daily News and a contributor to the Palm Beach Post. Kim Miller, the Post’s monarch of real estate snark, is away this week so I’m filling in, trying my best to try to dish the, well, dirt about Palm Beach County real estate. Be forewarned: I’m not nearly as sharp or hip as the inimitable Kim, but here goes nothin’.

In Palm Beach, real estate agents love, love , LOVE to describe their properties as “one-of-a-kind,” and that usually leads us to get out the salt shaker to painstakingly sort out a single grain.

But some properties actually do live up to that description — and Tarpon Island, as Palm Beach’s only private island, is one of them. The property and its mansion just sold for a recorded $150 million , marking the biggest-dollar residential sale in the country so far this year. Tongues around town are wagging, especially about who may have bought it .

Meanwhile, a developer who had hoped to win approval for Park West, a massive mixed-use project proposed west of Delray Beach, found the project parked in limbo — at least temporarily — by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners.

And out Wellington way, a powerful real estate investor is upset — and that, of course, means a lawsuit , because hey, this is South Florida. Mark Bellissimo is upset his company wasn’t given first dibs to buy back the Wellington International equestrian showground, which it had sold to a Denmark company in 2021. “Nay, nay,” the suit effectively says. Or maybe that should be “Neigh, neigh”? Or should I shut up now?

And finally, it’s back to Palm Beach, where a property’s owner’s apparently controversial request to build a new dock on a lakefront lot recently generated lots of discussion at Town Hall . An owner with property rights ended up clashing with disgruntled neighbors over where a yacht could be docked — it's becoming a familiar story in Palm Beach County.

Welcome to paradise, and read on for more details.

Sold for $150 million, Palm Beach's only private isle sets lakefront sales record

Even in Palm Beach, where properties can go for millions, the $150 million sale of private Tarpon Island grabbed plenty of national attention. And even at that price, it was only the town’s third highest-dollar residential sale over the years. The sale did a set a price record for a Palm Beach lakefront property without additional ocean frontage.

Developer Todd Michael Glaser and an investment group with deep pockets bought Tarpon Island — an artificial island — and its 1939 house. They then pumped that house up bigger than the biceps of a college student who has skipped class because the weight room and TikTok just won’t wait. Nothing very natty on Tarpon Island.

The amenity list is long , and it includes one of the town’s only lighted tennis courts, which was on the site before the redo. The town, it seems, frowns on the sound of bouncing balls and the glare of spillover light that might interfere with a neighbor's peaceful cocktail hour on the loggia.

Not so fast, says county board to Park West developer

West of Delray Beach, the Park West development proposed for a site in the Agricultural Reserve — remember that quaint idea? — would have had 734 apartments, a 150-room hotel, retail space and offices.

But the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners and some members of the surrounding community thought the project as presented was just too big and too intensive for the site at Atlantic Avenue and Florida's Turnpike. And the county planning commission had already balked at the idea of granting six — count ’em, six — changes to the Ag Reserve’s zoning to accommodate it.

So they showed the developer the door, at least temporarily. The board unanimously voted to postpone consideration of the project , sending the it back to the drawing board. A revised — and presumably scaled-back —version could be presented in August, according to intrepid Post writer Mike Diamond.

The development was proposed by Paul OKean, who operated Morningstar Nursery at the site for more than 30 years. Growth, he surely must know, can be hard.

Mark Bellissimo astride Wellington lawsuit over proposed sale of horse showgrounds

Wellington International has long been home to the annual  Winter Equestrian Festival .

But its future could be tied up — that's a horsey pun, albeit a bad one — thanks to a legal battle brewing between Wellington power broker Mark Bellissimo and a European investment firm .

As Wellington reporter Valentina Palm reports: "Global Equestrian Group, which bought  Wellington  International from Bellissimo almost three years ago, is trying to sell the showgrounds along Pierson Road. But now, a Bellissimo-owned company is suing to prevent the sale and buy it back."

Bellissimo claims in the suit that the sales contract with Global Equestrian gave him and his company the "right of first refusal," should the property ever be put up for sale.

One more rub? If a judge sides with Bellissimo, it could complicate the joint operations with a new horse center being built on 144 acres directly south of Wellington International.

In any case, there are clearly a few legal hurdles to jump . (See what I did there?)

Planned private dock is awash in neighbors' ire on Palm Beach

There have been at least a couple of stories of late — read them here and here — about Palm Beach County property owners with yacht problems. Or, more specifically, with yachts-at-dock problems.

The most r ecent controversy just erupted at a meeting of the Palm Beach Town Council , which got an earful from neighbors irked by a property owner’s plan to build — of all things! — a dock on their property in the Intracoastal Waterway.

It’s not just any property, of course. It’s one of the most prime lakefront spots in the county , on the southwest tip of Everglades Island. That island is home to an affluent residential neighborhood and lies between the mainland and the barrier island that encompasses almost all of rest of Palm Beach.

Neighboring residents expressed several objections about the proposed dock, including the request that it stretch more than 6 feet, which would exceed zoning requirements. Palm Beach Daily News writer Kristine Webb details all the nautical drama in her story .

Live lightly, as Kim would say.
