The Abel Tasman

The Abel Tasman is a tough yacht, and truly one of a kind. Finished in 1981 she is the last ship ever built by Phoenix BV Westerbroek, a self-taught Dutch boatbuilder, Siep Van Houten, operating out of his backyard. With his perfected steel-craftsmanship and uncompromising attitude to quality, he managed to combine strength with design, without sacrificing the yacht's strong sailing performance. Even in lighter winds one can sense that Sieps's inspiration for the Abel Tasman was the famous Americas Cup-winning schooner “America One”. The Abel Tasman now has an impressive history of visits to the world's most remote places. With several North-West passage transits, Antarctic voyages, and two winters in the Greenland ice, she has proven herself worthy in every condition.

The Abel Tasman is 75 ft long and comfortably accommodates 9 people in 4 bunkbed cabins + 1 extra bed. Down below she is cozy and a great place to spend any downtime. She is an expedition yacht and not a luxury cruiser, with many amenities being simple but resilient. Onboard there are 2 toilets, 1 shower, a kitchen with a gas stove, and a large common area.

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, cannes 2024: the second act, abel gance's napoleon.

abel yachts

The first two screenings of the 77th Cannes Film Festival were of a silent classic so gargantuan that the festival screened only the first half, which itself ran longer than last year's " Killers of the Flower Moon ," and of a meta farce that negates itself so thoroughly that it's tempting to ask whether it counts as a movie at all.

The silent epic was a long-gestating restoration of " Abel Gance 's Napoleon ," reconstituted to a seven-hour version that is said to have gone unseen since 1927 . (Cannes-goers had to settle for just part one; the two parts are scheduled to show together in Paris in July.) The meta farce, Quentin Dupieux's "The Second Act,"  was the festival's official opening-night feature. A self-conscious goof centered on actors shooting a film, it gave the fest an opportunity to rib an audience of sitting-duck cinephiles and send them on their way after a mere 80 minutes.

A dark-minded absurdist, Dupieux (whose " Deerskin " opened the parallel festival Directors' Fortnight five years ago ) does his best to misdirect from his intentions, at least until acknowledging his authorial hand in the final image. The first significant scene consists of a lengthy dolly shot of David ( Louis Garrel ) and Willy ( Raphaël Quenard ) walking and talking. Willy can't fathom why David, who is in the process of being pursued by a supposedly gorgeous woman, would rather hand her off to Willy. Willy makes an offensive remark, which prompts David to tell him to cut it out—because they're being filmed.

David and Willy are actually actors making a romantic comedy, and they are soon joined by their co-stars, Florence ( Léa Seydoux ) and Guillaume ( Vincent Lindon ). Except the line between actor and character—and the line between the movie's world and the world of the movie within the movie—is never firmly established, and the film's central conceit is to keep the boundaries porous.

Actions that appear unscripted turn out to be scripted, until the scripted action bleeds into actual behavior. Willy's ad-libbed, politically incorrect remarks allow Dupieux to poke fun at the perceived excesses of cancel culture while also implying that he doesn't mean it. When Florence complains to the others that she's "never seen anything so tiresome in her entire life," she might as well be Seydoux, breaking character to echo the audience's frustration at the film's dogged commitment to repetition. Exactly where Dupieux stands in the film's vortex of self-referentiality is worth at least a moment's thought. The revelation of the romcom's writer-director is by far the cleverest joke here.

abel yachts

If Cannes is meant to be a showcase for big, ambitious cinema, the real opening feature was Gance's epic, which has—for American audiences, anyway—remained maddeningly difficult to come by, certainly for a film with such a high reputation. (One of my great regrets as a moviegoer is not traveling to the Bay Area to see it with a full orchestra in 2012 .) Part of the trouble, as the restoration's opening scrawl indicates, is that " Napoleon " existed in multiple cuts—and multiple negatives—right from the start; the text cites the existence of more than 20 versions over the years. This restoration from the Cinematheque Française has been talked about for what feels like forever. (I have a press release from nine years ago announcing it for 2017.) As such, it feels like a small miracle that the film was finally unveiled today—Clarisse Gance, the director's daughter, was said to be in the theater—even if we didn't get the famed triptych finale, which is in part two.

"Napoléon vu par Abel Gance," as it's known in French—and this is definitely a film in which the director's vision earns its mention in the title—is a monument to Gance's completist instincts. Part one begins with Napoleon at age 11, testing his nascent military genius with snowballs in Brienne. It ends with his first major military triumph during the siege of Toulon, after an attack in the pouring rain makes for some of the muddiest fighting this side of Orson Welles's " Chimes at Midnight ." Near the end of the skirmish, a mini-triptych—a three-part split screen—teases the multi-projector finale of part two.

In between, Gance gives the sense that no detail he could uncover was unworthy of filming. Title cards cards labeled "Hist." testify to the supposed authenticity of his historical sourcing. An "author's note" asserts the accuracy of the Corsican locations used for filming. "Napoleon" is first and foremost a triumph of showmanship—of rapid-fire montage, of horseback P.O.V. shots—and any moment that privileges light, shadow, waves, or weather is riveting.

Gance's vaunted use of superimpositions is at its loveliest in Corsica. Napoleon's solo journey about a boat with a tricolor sail is crosscut with the reign of terror. (Robespierre's earlier entrance in sunglasses got the screening's biggest laugh.) And in the restoration's scoring, the singing of the "Marseillaise"—"the anthem that will replace the sounds of cannons," Napoleon predicts—is accompanied by a tenor, then by a full chorus.

That is how you open a French film festival.

How a Florida Mom Who Was Abducted by a Serial Killer Escaped With Her Life: 'I Had to Charm Him or Die'

Barbara Mabee Abel survived a 1974 encounter with a man who would later be dubbed the Casanova Killer

Warner Bros. Discovery

On Nov. 14, 1974, Barbara Mabee Abel was a 31-year-old single mother in West Palm Beach, Fla., working to support her 6-year-old son Dale and her twin sister, Beverly, who had cerebral palsy, when she was kidnapped by a killer. Dubbed the Casanova Killer for his good looks, Paul John Knowles was eventually linked to 18 murders, though he claimed he committed up to 35. In her own words, Abel — who appears on a new episode of People Magazine Investigates: Surviving a Serial Killer on Sunday, May 19 at 9/8c on ID and streaming on Max — tells how she used her charm and quick-thinking to escape an even worse fate. (An exclusive clip of the episode is shown below.)

When I got to work that morning, I had an eerie feeling. I didn’t know what, but something was wrong. I called Beverly, who always answered because she was always at home. But there was no answer. I left around 5 p.m. and picked up Dale at school. When we got to the house, I called out for Beverly and told Dale, “Go look for her, honey,” while I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. That’s when I heard a voice say, “Don’t turn around or I’ll shoot.”

Like an idiot, I turned around. The man who I later learned was Paul John Knowles was there with a sawed-off shotgun by his side. Then Dale ran in and said, “Beverly’s in the bedroom — she’s bleeding.” Knowles took me into the bedroom, where Beverly was bound and gagged. She had blood dripping  from  her  mouth.  And she was naked. I lost it. I said, “Did you rape my sister?”

Billy Downs/Atlanta Journal-Constitution via AP

He laughed. He said he had tried, and now he was leaving and taking Dale with him. “Don’t take my son,” I told him. “Take me instead.”

So I walked out of the house with him and into the car while he held the shotgun. We took off into the sunset. I didn’t know who he was, but I knew he could kill me. I decided I would do whatever I needed to do to survive. I told him how I thought he looked like Robert Redford. I was trying to build up his confidence. I prayed to the Lord to give me words that would make him fall in love with me. I knew I had to charm him or die.

In the car, he was getting frustrated when there would be no news on the radio. He was trying to do the radio and drive stick shift. He kept telling me we were going to Georgia. I believe if he had taken me there, he would have killed me.

COURTESY BARBARA ABEL

Eventually, we stopped at a motel in Fort Pierce, Fla., because he was just so tired. As we walked up to the front desk, I put my arm around him. He had the shotgun under his coat, and I knew for a fact that he would shoot the lady at the desk if there was any trouble, so I acted like we were married. At that moment he was being very charming. But he was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

When we got into the room, he told me to take all my clothes off. That evening, he raped me. I had to figure out how to get out of there. At the motel, he kept the TV on the whole time. The news came on and all of a sudden, my face and his face were on all the stations — NBC, CBS and ABC. The news was about me being kidnapped and how he had killed somebody. He was excited. That’s when it finally hit me: He wanted to be famous. He wanted to write a book. And me being a radio copywriter by profession, I told him I could help. My job was what saved me, because this serial killer wanted me to tell his story.

The next day we went to a restaurant, and I pretended to be in love with him because I knew that if I opened my mouth, people would be killed. When we got back to the motel, he raped me again and tied me up and gagged me before he left to make a phone call. When he got back at around 1 in the morning, he realized he left the key in the room. He was locked out and couldn’t get back in. Through the door, he told me he knew I couldn’t talk — I was gagged — but that he was leaving. The last thing he said to me was, “I love you.”

I don’t know how I did it, but the gag came out of my mouth, and I got loose. I called the motel manager and said, “I was kidnapped by a serial killer.” After law enforcement arrived, I got on the phone with Dale, who said, “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy! I love you! When are you coming home?” I told him I’d be home soon and that I loved him to pieces.

I eventually married Jim Abel. He's my soulmate. I survived breast cancer. Dale grew up to be a fine young man. He remembered everything, even though he was only 6 years old. Now, he's a prayer warrior for others, he's always been helping people. He has his own business and his own beautiful family.

Beverly died of cancer in 2019. She was the strongest woman I'd ever met in my life. She put up with cerebral palsy and made it a joke. She was amazing. I had decided to write a book, One Survivor , before she died and she was so happy that I was writing it. I did it for the two of us.

After leaving Barbara Abel tied up and gagged in a motel room, Paul John Knowles started driving toward Georgia, in Abel’s stolen car. The vehicle was spotted by a Florida state trooper, who attempted to stop the wanted killer. But still armed with a shotgun, Knowles ambushed the trooper and took him hostage, before using his squad car to pull over a businessman.

Knowles kept the trooper and the businessman captive in the back of the latter’s car, before taking them both to a remote area in Georgia where he shot and killed the pair. The next day he was arrested after he crashed into a police roadblock and led officers in a foot chase into the woods.

The man later known as the Casanova Killer died weeks later, in December 1974, when he escaped from his handcuffs while leading authorities to the location where he ditched the state trooper’s gun. Knowles tried to grab the gun of a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent’s gun and was shot by another agent.

Anderson da Silva Pantaleão was at the snack bar he owns last Friday when clay-colored water began filling the streets in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. Soon, it was rushing into his ground-floor shop. By 9 p.m., the water was up to his waist.

“Then the fear starts to hit,” he said. “You’re just trying not to drown.”

He dashed up to a neighbor’s home on the second floor, taking refuge for the next three nights, rationing water, cheese and sausage with two others. Members of the group slept in shifts, fearing another rush of water could take them by surprise in the dead of night.

On Monday, water began flooding the second floor, and they thought the worst. Then, a military boat arrived and rescued Mr. Pantaleão, 43. A day later, despite heavy rains, he was trying to go back on a rescue boat to search for friends who were still missing or stranded.

“I can’t leave them there,” he said. “The water is running out, the food is running out.”

Flood victims took shelter at a sports facility in the Menino Deus neighborhood of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The situation in southern Brazil, where heavy rains have caused flooding in hundreds of municipalities, may worsen with the arrival of new storms.

Brazil is grappling with one of its worst floods in recent history. Torrential rains have drenched the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, home to 11 million people, since late April and have triggered severe flooding that has submerged entire towns, blocked roads, broken a major dam and shut down the international airport until June.

At least 105 people have been killed and 130 others have been reported missing. The floods, which have stretched across most of Rio Grande do Sul’s 497 municipalities, have forced nearly 164,000 people from their homes.

In the state capital, Porto Alegre, a city of 1.3 million perched on the banks of the Guaiba River, streets were submerged in murky water and the airport was shuttered by the deluge, with flights canceled through the end of the month.

The river rose to over 16 feet this week, exceeding the previous high levels seen during a major flood in 1941 that paralyzed the city for weeks.

The flooding has blocked roads into the city and hampered deliveries of basic goods. Supermarkets were running out of bottled water on Tuesday, and some residents reported walking up to three miles in search of clean drinking water.

Many of those stranded awaited help on rooftops. Some took desperate measures to flee: When the shelter her family was staying in flooded, Ana Paula de Abreu, 40, swam to a rescue boat while grasping her 11-year-old son under one arm. Two residents of one Porto Alegre neighborhood used an inflatable mattress to pull at least 15 people out of their inundated homes.

Search crews, which include the authorities and volunteers, were scouring flooded areas and rescuing residents by boat and air. With nowhere to land, some helicopters have used winches to pull up people stranded by the flooding.

Barbara Fernandes, 42, a lawyer in Porto Alegre, spent hours on the scorching roof of her apartment building on Monday, waving a red rag and her crutches toward the sky. A rescue helicopter finally spotted her in the late afternoon.

“You just don’t know when they’ll come for you,” said Ms. Fernandes, who is recovering from surgery on her ankle and could not flee her building before the waters rose.

Nearly 67,000 people were living in shelters across the state, while others have taken refuge in the homes of family or friends. Some people who had access to neither option were sleeping in their cars or on the streets in areas that were still dry.

“It seems like we’re living through the end of the world,” said Beatriz Belmontt Abel, 46, a nursing technician who was volunteering at a shelter in the city of Canoas, across the river from Porto Alegre. “I never imagined I would see this happen.”

In another shelter set up in a gym in Porto Alegre, volunteers distributed meals and clothes. Rows of mattresses lay on the floor, and cardboard boxes served as shelves. Those who had been rescued busied themselves sweeping the floor and making their temporary beds.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who visited the region last week, pledged federal funds to help the rescue efforts. The state authorities have also announced aid to pay for search crews, health services and housing for those whose homes were destroyed or damaged by floodwaters.

Even as rescues continued, the authorities worried that the crisis could worsen because another wave of severe weather was expected in coming days. With a cold front buffeting the region, meteorologists have forecast heavy rains, hail, thunderstorms and winds over 60 miles per hour.

The states’s governor, Eduardo Leite, said the authorities were evacuating people from regions vulnerable to more turbulent weather. Some residents have refused to abandon their homes, fearing looting. Others have tried to return to their neighborhoods, hoping water levels will recede.

“It’s not time to go home,” Mr. Leite told reporters on Tuesday.

The flooding is the fourth weather-related crisis to hit Brazil’s southern region in less than a year. In September, 37 people were killed in Rio Grande do Sul by torrential rains and punishing winds caused by a cyclone.

Climate experts say the region is reeling from the effects of El Niño, the cyclical climate phenomenon that can bring heavy rains to Brazil’s southern regions while causing drought in the Amazon rainforest.

But the effects of El Niño have been exacerbated by a mix of climate change, deforestation and haphazard urbanization, according to Mercedes Bustamante, an ecologist and professor at the University of Brasília.

“You’re really looking at a recipe for disaster,” said Dr. Bustamante, who has written several reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a body of experts convened by the United Nations.

For well over a decade, scientists have been warning policymakers that global warming would bring increased rains to this region.

As deforestation advances in the Amazon and elsewhere in Brazil, precipitation patterns are shifting and leading to more erratic rain patterns, according to Dr. Bustamante. As a result, rainfall is spread unevenly at times, drenching smaller areas or coming in torrential downpours over shorter periods.

Severe weather has also become more deadly in recent decades, as urban populations have grown and cities like Porto Alegre have pushed into forested areas that once acted as buffers against flooding and landslides, she added.

The latest floods caught Brazil “unprepared,” Dr. Bustamante noted, highlighting the need to make cities more resilient to climate change and develop response strategies that better protect residents from extreme weather events, which are bound to become more frequent.

“It is a tragedy that, unfortunately, has been coming for some time,” she said. “We hope that this serves as a call to action.”
