Want to live onboard the world’s only private residential ship here’s your chance.

The World is the only private residential ship at sea

For a long time, I thought The World was a myth. A community of wealthy residents sailing across the globe full-time on a luxury liner? It sounds like the plot of a hit Netflix show. But, a few weeks ago, I had the rare opportunity to board said ship, where I discovered that the reality is far from fiction.

The World is the first private ship occupied by, owned by, and managed by its residents. It’s been circumnavigating the globe almost non-stop since its inaugural journey in 2002 and, after ironing out a few challenges in the early days, it’s been running successfully since. Occupancy is high and apartments rarely come up, but if you’ve always been interested in life at sea, now’s your chance, as several spaces have hit the market.

Life at sea

Those who’ve heard of The World will know that it is notoriously private. The press is rarely invited onboard so, when I was invited for a tour of the facilities and residences up for sale, I leapt at the chance.

“We don’t call it a cruise ship,” Eddie Wong, residential director, corrected me as we boarded. As it turns out, The World is much more of a home at sea, despite its cruise ship-esque external appearance.

Inside, the entrance opens up to a spacious lobby, which is main access point between the ship’s 12 decks. The top two decks are mostly dedicated to the ship’s communal facilities, including six restaurants and various lounges and bars. On one end of the scale, there’s the casual Fredy’s Deli and the Mediterranean-style Tides with its al fresco balcony and themed nights. On the other is Asian-fusion eatery East and Michelin-inspired Portraits, which has an excellent wine list.

“Wine is very important on the ship,” Wong says as he shows me the impressive cellar. “We have one of the most extensive and highly regarded wine lists at sea. We’ve got around 15,000 bottles of wine onboard and we’ve won numerous wine awards.”

The World is home to six restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining

Residents can select between up to 15,000 bottles of wine from the ship's expansive cellar

Another hotspot for oenophiles is the yacht-themed Regatta bar, which hosts three-piece bands, live pianists and even karaoke nights. It’s also the home of The World Yacht Club, an accredited club with its own flag and reciprocal affiliations with yacht clubs around the world from Monaco and Cornwall to New Zealand and Canada.

Food, drinks and entertainment onboard is included in each resident’s annual service charge – each person is issued with credit so they can eat and drink what they wish without needing to worry about a bill. The annual fee is calculated based on the square footage of each residence, and a fair share of this fee also goes towards the maintenance of the ship.

The ship’s facilities are broad and tailored to the interests of the residents. As many enjoy golf, the ship hires a PGA-licensed golf instructor to helps residents to work on their swing in the 72-course golf simulator. There’s also a fitness and spa centre, an outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a library, a poker room, and a large theatre where guests can watch movies and shows. It’s also the only ship at sea with a full-size tennis court. “That is our claim to fame,” Wong says.

All facilities are maintained by an annual service charge

The World has myriad casual and formal restaurants and lounges that residents can enjoy at their ... [+] leisure

Around the world

One of the hardest jobs is organising the global itinerary. This task is managed by a special board to help the captain and management committee draft itineraries on which the residents vote. The preferred options are then whittled down and edited through further voting rounds until a majority favourite is found.

Each year, as well as visiting ports in key yachting destinations across the globe, two or three major expeditions are included. “The ship is always full during expeditions because when else would you ever go to these places?” Wong says as he recounts tales from remote spots such as Melanesia, Antarctica, Madagascar and the Northwest Passage.

“We’ve just completed the Iceland expedition. That was incredible. About 30 expeditions leaders came with us and we sailed around, going to little islands, coves and villages to learn about the history and culture of Iceland,” he says. “Another time in the Northwest Passage, we found a polar bear that was so curious it got in the water and swam laps around the ship. Everyone was looking from their balconies. It was a surreal situation.”

The World circumnavigates the globe consistently

In 2023, The World will embark on two back-to-back expeditions to the Arctic Circle: the first venturing throughout Greenland and Ellesmere Island, the second along Canada’s rugged Baffin Coast. Then, the New Year will be celebrated in Antarctica where residents will discover the breath-taking scenery and wildlife of the snowy continent.

Before reaching each destination, residents are invited to the lectures hosted by guest experts. “As part of the enrichment programme, this is very important,” Wong says. “Everyone is so well informed that when they come to a country, they know what’s going on.” The ship has welcomed a variety of speakers in the past, including some high-profile Nobel Prize winners. “The residents are very well connected,” he says with a secretive smile.

It's good company to be in, I realise, as I meet residents who comprise several high-profile personalities and business people, ex-leaders of industry who are fully enjoying their retirements, and more. Many I meet are from the USA, although official statistics reveal that residents hail from 19 different countries.

On the market

Each year, a small selection of homes, ranging from 330 sq ft studios to 3,340 sq ft three-bedroom apartments, are made available for resale at costs ranging from $2.5 to $15 million, plus annual ownership costs. Layouts and décor can be customised to taste, and many residents choose to bring their own interior designers onboard. After all, they’re not creating a vacation home, but a residence. Although there is no pressure to live aboard full-time.

I discover that only a small percentage of residents live onboard full-time. Most also have second (or multiple) properties on land and choose to join the ship for their favourite parts of the itinerary, or for several months at a time.

Residences range in size from 330 sq ft to 3,242 sq ft

Interested parties must pass an approval process before becoming residents

Residents can arrange and decorate their apartments as they wish

Interested parties must apply and pass an approval process which will often involve them coming onboard to discover life for themselves. This is important because, as I discovered, residents come together as one big community filled with its own groups of friends and, I’d assume dramas. Although I don’t witness any of this as I watch residents greet each other like old friends, or even family.

And this community extends beyond life at sea. I joined a walk with some of the residents and met people who’ve made friends, business partners and even life partners through the ship’s community network. I’m told that one Australian guest invited the whole community to a party at their house when the ship was in port in their hometown, while an American who owns a helicopter business invited all their seafaring friends for a flight in theirs.

I left my short stay on The World more curious than I arrived, and with more stories than I’m able to tell, but as with most things in life, there’s no fun in giving all the secrets away.

For more information on ownership opportunities please visit aboardtheworld.com . In spring/summer 2023, The World returns to the UK and Europe with select opportunities for those interested in ownership to visit for a private tour.

A $20 million penthouse on The World, a luxury cruise ship, has listed for sale

Travelling the world without ever having to leave home – a penthouse is for sale on The World, one of the most unusual neighbourhoods on earth aboard the biggest privately-owned luxury residential cruise ship at sea.

After 14 years, the owner of the three-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom home, who wishes to remain anonymous, is selling up – but only to reorganise his holdings into several smaller apartments on the ship for his grown-up family.

“The ship itself is a phenomenon but the community too is amazing; a group of people of all nationalities and age groups who all share a common passion for travel and adventure,” he says.

The World will be visiting Australia in February and March 2020, with the opportunity to inspect the penthouse on deck 11. Photo: Supplied

“I’ve done the yacht thing and owned my own aircraft but I wouldn’t replace a home on this ship with anything. It’s a home on the most unique property in the world and you can’t put a price on the kind of experiences it offers. It’s the ultimate trophy property in the world right now.”

Being offered for around US$14 million ($20.5 million), with annual maintenance fees of up to US$1.4 million ($2.05 million), the newly-renovated apartment is on deck 11 of the 12-level The World, overlooking the bow. With the ship cruising around Australia over February and March this year, it presents the ideal opportunity for inspections.

The Norwegian-built yacht launched in 2002 with 165 apartments, ranging from studios to three-beds, and circumnavigates the globe every two to three years with the average occupancy at any one time between 150 and 200 residents, and 280 staff.

The swimming pool aboard The World. Photo: Supplied

Most of the owners – who have to possess at least US$10 million ($14.6 million) in assets and undergo background checks – spend a total of three to six months onboard, dividing their time between the condo cruiser and their other land-based homes elsewhere, according to business and family commitments and the voyage itinerary.

Some, however, stay most of the year-round and, with six restaurants on board, six bars and lounges, a fitness centre, swimming pools, spa, a full-size tennis court, putting greens, golf simulator, library, cinema, games rooms, deli, medical centre, florist and chapel, there’s little reason to leave at any of 2020’s 100 ports of call.

“To have a private dwelling at sea and to be able to travel without the congestion of ports and airports is simply extraordinary,” he says. “The crew make you feel at home, we have friends to stay and we undertake incredible expeditions as the ship is small enough to visit many places that larger vessels can’t.

“We also have lectures about the places we’re visiting and invite Nobel Peace Prize-winners on board to talk to us. It’s a great way to travel and to live.”

The home for sale has two interconnecting living areas, a hallway with a waterjet-cut marble Arabesque floor, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to a veranda that wraps around the bow, a Macassar ebony bar and a faux fireplace surrounded by black and grey marble. There’s also a media room and state-of-the-art kitchen.

Sydney health and fitness professional Shannon Cleary lived on board for 18 months in 2011-12 and remembers it as an amazing experience. “You can’t fathom the decadence, the luxury, and the attention to detail of the service,” she says.

“The ship has that wow factor, but living and travelling, it’s like you’re living in wow every day.”

There are a total of six communal restaurants for residents to enjoy on board The World . Dishes served are inspired by the current location in which the superyacht is moored, with the culinary team sourcing ingredients from local markets, sometimes joined by residents on their excursions. Pictured above is Marina, a steakhouse with breathtaking views to the outdoors.

Three-bedroom residences

A three-bedroom residence such as the one pictured above offers an inviting grand foyer, a kitchen filled with premium cooking appliances, a dining area, three full bathrooms, a personal library, a living room with a fireplace and generous balcony space from which to enjoy the ever-changing views.

With outdoor balconies running the length of The World , residents can opt to enjoy sleeping under the stars in an al fresco "bali bed" for an atmospheric experience in warm weather climates.

The swimming pool

The World offers an on-board spa centre for residents to enjoy treatments and fitness activities, including a swimming pool and a fitness deck with outdoor equipment and machines that help you stay in shape while taking in the ocean views.

Fredy’s Deli Marketplace

The wine vault

One of the unique features on board The World is an extensive wine vault. Over 14,000 bottles from 19 countries are stored on board, with restaurant menus offering an extensive selection of over 1,100 wines to pair with your dinner. The are also plenty of curated experiences for wine connoisseurs to enjoy on board; The World’s head sommelier welcomes select winemakers aboard to discuss wine production and pairing with the residents, while in port residents are invited on exclusive visits to vineyards around the world, some of which have not opened their doors to visitors in years.

Tides restaurant

When the weather permits residents can dine al fresco at Tides restaurant, which offers health-conscious Mediterranean-style cuisine such as fresh homemade pasta, accompanied by a backdrop of ocean views.

Bars on board The World

A cocktail from one of the numerous on-board bars can be enjoyed al fresco while taking in the ever-changing scenery from one of The World 's lounge spaces.

The superyacht has 39 apartments which start from $10.8 million each. Some have been sold without the owners even viewing them, Somnio told Insider.

You can't just buy one of these apartments though — you have to wait to be invited. The owners will be kept a secret, Somnio said.

Somnio said the apartments will be spread across six decks. The smallest one starts at 182m² of total space, while the largest one will be 963m² — a third of which will be an outside terrace.

The superyacht's biggest apartment is expected to take over nearly the whole of the top deck, Somnio said.

Apartment owners will work with three design companies for up to three months to choose the interior arrangements and decide on which materials, furniture, lighting, and artwork to have in their rooms, per Somnio.

Some apartments will have a kitchen, a gym, a library, dining areas both inside and outside on the terrace. There will also be a shared wine cellar and tasting room that contains 10,000 bottles, as well as restaurants, bars, and a beach club with watersports, Somnio said.

The design companies will also help to source knickknacks such as cutlery, towels, and bedding for each apartment. Owners can also add their own belongings to the interior design.

Ukraine war latest: Putin wraps up China trip with subtle message for West; drone strike hits Russian region

Putin has concluded his two-day visit to China with a back-handed rebuke for Western powers. Meanwhile, one person has been killed and another injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Kursk region, local authorities say.

Russian forces have captured the village of Starytsia in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, Russia's defence ministry says.

Russian troops are continuing to advance in the area, it added.

On Friday, the defence ministry said it had taken control of 12 settlements in Kharkiv in a week.

A 33-year-old man has died in hospital after a reported Russian airstrike on Friday, officials say, bringing the total number of dead to four.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said 16 people are still in hospital after the attack on Kharkiv, with two in a serious condition.

A shell dating back to the 1940s exploded in the basement of a military academy in St. Petersburg on Friday, injuring seven Russian servicemen.

Russian military officials confirmed the incident but did not give an update on the conditions of those injured at the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications.

The academy trains soldiers serving in the army's signal corps.

The explosion happened while the basement was being cleaned and rubbish moved, according to reports in Russian media.

The explosion was caused by a 76mm shell dating to the 1941-45 period, the Interfax news agency reported the region's military command as saying.

It was not clear why this ammunition was stored at the academy.

Ukrainian soldiers were forced to communicate only by radio and phone when intense Russian jamming disrupted their satellite internet connection, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The Ukrainian brigade in northern Kharkiv lost connection to drone and communications systems as Russian forces began their incursion on 10 May, the newspaper reported.

It is reportedly the first time that Russian electronic warfare has completely knocked out the Ukrainian Starlink connection since the start of the war.

A Ukrainian soldier told the Washington Post the disruptions prevented Ukrainian forces from conducting basic reconnaissance.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said it was "notable" Russian forces were able to achieve such a widespread effect and said they may have waited to deploy a new electronic warfare adaptation during the beginning of the operation.

Ukraine's military claims it has shot down all 13 drones it says Russia launched overnight from Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kursk.

The Ukrainian Air Force said that, along with missile units of the Armed Forces, it intercepted the drones over Kharkiv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

One person has been killed and another injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Kursk region, acting regional governor Alexei Smirnov said.

It comes after a resident in the southern Russian region of Belgarod was killed by a drone while gardening on Friday (see our 7.43am post).

Russian forces launched drone attacks on two energy facilities in Ukraine overnight, according to the country's grid operator Ukrenergo.

There were no casualties and power was not cut off to customers, the company wrote on Telegram.

One of the attacks was in the central region of Poltava, Filipp Pronin, head of the regional military administration, said on Telegram.

The other damaged facility is in the east of the country, Ukrenergo said.

For context: Russia has increased its attacks on Ukrainian energy systems in recent months.

Sky News analysis of data from Ukrenergo shows in March 2024, an average of 889,000 Ukrainians were without power on any given day - the highest number since the war began in February 2022.

Ukraine's second largest city of Kharkiv has come under intensifying attacks in recent weeks.

An airstrike on Friday killed three people and injured 31 more, while at least two more people were injured in separate attacks on the region.

These photos from Reuters show the aftermath of strikes on Friday.

A close ally of Vladimir Putin has said the EU "does not tolerate" free speech after the bloc banned four more Russian media outlets (see our 7.50am post).

"The EU leadership can only talk about freedom of speech, but in fact it does not tolerate it," said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma.

"They block any alternative point of view, destroy freedom of speech, violate the right to free dissemination and receipt of information."

Russia warned the EU's decision will result in a harsh response against Western media in Moscow, but has yet to say which media organisations it will affect.

The number of victims from a reported Russian airstrike on Friday has risen, officials say.

At least three people are now said to have died, with another 31 injured, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

It is not clear what the attack targeted.

Two more people were injured in separate attacks on Kharkiv on Friday, Mr Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian attacks but the strikes have become more intense in recent months.
