SUMMER PRINCESS is a beautiful, newly refurbished boat that would be ideal for luxury family gulet cruises in Croatia. The team that run it have been in the cruising business in Croatia for over 12 years, so they have plenty of knowledge of the area and know what pleases their guests. The accommodation comprises 5 double cabins, sleeping up to 10 guests. The boat is traditional in style and made with wood throughout. It has a length of 25.8 meters and a beam of 7.8 meters, which is unusually wide for a boat of this length, so it has loads of deck space on which to walk around or relax in the sun. The boat also has a huge stern deck area with a large dining table and soft seating where you can enjoy fantastic dinners during the balmy evenings. Having worked with the team who run the boat for 12 years, I couldn't recommend them more highly, and many of their bookings are from repeat clients, some of whom have come back several years running, which speaks for its itself. The boat really sails too, so is ideal for clients interested in sailing.

Charter price includes

The crew (specified above), water, electricity, clean bed linen, clean shower and sunbathing towels (changed at least twice a week), a free welcome drink, fuel for 4 hours cruising a day (which is usually more than enough), Wi-Fi Internet connection, personal injury insurance while on the boat, and free use of onboard equipment specified above.

Charter price doesn't include

Harbour fees (see above for estimate of cost, which can be reduced by anchoring outside the ports on some nights), meals & other drinks aboard (specified above), transfers between the airport and boat, National Park entrance fees and tips to the crew.

Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) is a percentage of the charter price to be paid in advance to cover your expenses during the cruise, such as meals, drinks, harbour fees, etc. The APA is held on account on your behalf and at the end of the week the total of all your expenses will be deducted and the balance will be refunded to you (it does not include tips to the crew, which need to be paid separately). Not all boats ask for an APA (see above) but ask for meals and all-inclusive drinks to be paid on arrival and harbour fees to be paid locally as you arrive in each port.

The boats' charter season is usually from the beginning of May to the end of October and this is usually divided into 3 price periods, with Low Season usually comprising May & October, Mid Season usually comprising June & September, and High Season usually comprising July & August. Some boats, however, can have as few as 2 different pricing periods and some as many as 4 or even 5, and the dates for these can vary, so if you are confused, which is understandable, please don't hesitate to

What can we say about a Gulet Cruise holiday?

Morning Routine 

Breakfast is served at our outdoor dining table at 8 a.m. Stern deck is also perfect for relaxing with a drink and a read.

How far do we sail?

We sail up to 4hrs a day. We love islandhoping and we go from secluded bays where we swim during the day to site seeing towns where we dock in the evening to spend the night.

Where do we lunch?

Exquisite 4 course lunch is served daily at 14h hours. We like to stay at the bay of choice during the day, so we can swim, eat and relax.

What happens in the evening?

We dock at around 18h, we will be spending the night here, and we encourage our guests to take in a unique atmosphere that ancient towns of Croatia have to offer.

What does our crew do?

During cruises, four crewmembers are at your disposal for anything you may need. Our captain, chef, bartender, and deckhand will take care of navigation, all service and safety on board.

It’s been my familial role for 20 years — and usually my siblings and our spouses are happy to step aside. But last summer, I had no choice but to back off. That’s because my big sister suggested my family join hers for a sail along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast.

Her husband, Sejo, is from Bosnia, and he knows this part of the world well. His advice: that the 12 of us spend the week aboard a traditionally styled teak sailing vessel known as a gulet .

These broad-beamed boats are most closely associated with Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, where they were first used by the Ottomans for fishing and freight. Recently, they’ve gained some renown among yacht enthusiasts visiting the eastern Mediterranean, where several hundred are now available for charter.

Still, it’s fair to say many Americans have never heard of them. (It’s pronounced goo -let, by the way.) That’s quickly changing, says Karen Fedorko Sefer, founder and CEO of Sea Song, a travel company that specializes in Turkey and has been arranging gulet trips for two decades.

“For people who want to be together alone, it’s just perfect,” Fedorko Sefer says. “There’s so much outdoor space, they can tuck into tiny harbors, and the vessels are authentic to the region.”

Bookings for 2022 surpassed those of pre-COVID years, and the summer of 2023 was up another 25 percent, according to Sea Song. The U.K.-based agency Peter Sommer Travels has noticed a similar uptick in interest, with demand for charters among its U.S. clientele up 10 percent compared with the 2019 season.

“Why would anyone book a yacht?” Fedorko Sefer wonders, rhetorically — particularly when one considers that chartering a luxury gulet with a crew costs about a third less.

The terrific value is what sealed the deal — though I’m sure my sister was also glad I wouldn’t be taking the wheel. Sejo had selected the 92-foot Gardelin , which would have a full crew to take care of us.

We set off from the pretty town of Trogir, near Split, and quickly fell into a blissful routine: sleep in, swim or stand-up paddleboard, eat breakfast, then cruise to another port to get into a bit of history. (The seven teens aboard were required by us parents to attend each guided walking tour.)

We hit highlights including the 17th-century Jakša Palace, in Vis; Korčula, the island that claims Marco Polo as a native son; and the Square of St. Stephen on Hvar, which looks like the Piazza San Marco in miniature. 

In the evenings, we’d all return to our boat for another swim, the kids would play Uno or climb back aboard the paddleboard, then we’d do drinks and dinner in town. I’d occasionally retreat to my cabin for some me time, then emerge to challenge the kids to a somersault competition. 

After a week of swimming, sightseeing, and snoozing, I had learned to let go of my type A tendencies — up to a point. When it came to winning “best front flip,” I simply refused to quit.
