Clevere Verlängerung

Zwei komplette Golf Generationen lang verzichtet man auf einen Kombi auf Golf Basis – erst mit dem VW Golf III wird im Herbst 1993 der Variant als dritte Version neben Limousine und Cabriolet vorgestellt. Zuvor befürchtet man, (innen-)räumliche Nähe zum jeweiligen Passat Variant könne die Verkaufszahlen gefährden.

Der Golf III Variant fährt tatsächlich groß auf. Er bietet einen 466 Liter großen Kofferraum, der bei umgeklappter Rückbank auf 1.425 Liter erweiterbar ist. Dieses Volumen liegt tatsächlich nur 75 Liter unter dem des VW Passat Variant 35i (B4) . Die Bodengruppe des Golf III Variant verfügt über eine modifizierte Hinterachse mit doppeltem Querlenker und stammt vom Vento.

Den Golf Variant gibt es mit allen zahlreichen aus dem Golf III bekannten Triebwerken von 44 kW (60 PS) bis 140 kW (190 PS). Besonders ökonomisch sind die Dieselmotoren mit 47 kW (64 PS) bis 81 kW (110 PS).

Über die Laufzeit gibt es zahlreiche Sondermodelle: Europe, Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Europe, Joker und Family bieten interessante Ausstattungsdetails und begeistern Rechner durch Preisvorteile gegenüber den Serienmodellen. Vervollständigt werden die Sondervarianten durch den Yachting: ein Charaktertyp mit auffälligem  Front- und Heckdesign, inklusive Heckspoiler oberhalb des Heckfensters.

Golf III Variant Modellpflege

Ab Dezember 1994 wird der Golf III Variant auch als syncro angeboten. Es gibt ihn mit Vierzylinder-Benzinmotoren mit 66 kW (90 PS) oder 85 kW (115 PS) und den Sechszylinder mit 2,9 Liter und mit 140 kW (190 PS). Alternativ steht der TDI mit 66 kW (90 PS) als Allradler in der Preisliste.

Der Golf Variant bleibt beim Serienanlauf des Golf IV im Programm, seine Produktion wird jedoch 200 Kilometer gen Westen von Wolfsburg nach Osnabrück zu Karmann verlagert.

Die Produktion des Golf III Variant wird eingestellt. Insgesamt werden 222.626 Exemplare gebaut.

World premiere for the new Golf Variant: the compact estate is now even more spacious, dynamic and digital than ever before. The greater amounts of available space, comprehensive standard features and new drive types with mild hybrid and twin dosing technology represent pioneering characteristics. The new Golf Alltrack as the all-wheel drive Golf Variant with SUV genes is also making its debut. In Germany pre-sales for the Golf Variant will start tomorrow, 10 September, while further European countries will gradually follow.

Member of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Board of Management responsible for Sales, Jürgen Stackmann: “as a compact, spacious model, the Golf Variant has already impressed more than 3 million customers since its debut in 1993. The latest generation inspires with its beautiful design and, with the most advanced cockpit in its segment, takes a giant step towards digitalisation. In addition, it scores high marks with efficient drives, maximum safety and significantly more space – the perfect family car. And those who are looking for something more sporty will love the new Golf Alltrack . As a crossover between the Golf Variant and an SUV, it offers the perfect combination of space, innovation and fun even off paved roads thanks to its all-wheel drive.“

Appealing vehicle exterior. In comparison with its predecessor the new Golf Variant’s exterior design has become more clear-cut and dynamic. The front end clearly shows its close relation to the new Golf. Further back, the Variant shows its typical uniqueness featuring a roof section that becomes flatter towards the rear as well as a coupé-type, angled rear window. The new generation is 4,633 mm long and now boasts a wheelbase of 2,686 mm (respectively a 66 mm increase compared with its predecessor). This increase in length rearranges the proportions and makes the Golf Variant appear more elongated and flatter. The headlights and tail light clusters always feature LED technology.

Spacious vehicle interior. The increased exterior length and wheelbase benefit the vehicle interior of the Golf Variant. Five passengers can be accommodated in comfort in the new Golf Variant as the additional wheelbase length is used almost entirely for the interior. The interior length increases by 48 mm to 1,798 mm. As the legroom thereby also increases by 48 mm, the extra space has a particularly noticeable positive effect, especially in the rear. Passengers can stow their luggage in a generously dimensioned luggage compartment: when loaded up to the top edge of the rear seat backrest, it offers 611 litres of stowage space (6 litres more compared with the Golf Variant 7). With the vehicle loaded up to the roofliner with integrated luggage compartment net and the front seat backrests, the volume increases to 1,642 litres (an increase of 22 litres). If both hands are busy holding shopping or luggage, the optionally available, electrically operated rear boot lid can alternatively be opened using the sensor-controlled luggage compartment opener – by means of a foot gesture in front of the Golf Variant’s rear bumper.

New drive systems offer pure efficiency. Take the eTSI with 48 V technology and 7-speed dual clutch gearbox, for example: a 48 V belt-driven starter-alternator, 48 V lithium-ion battery and the TSI engine merge to form a new mild hybrid drive system. The benefits of the new eTSI include a significantly lower consumption, as the Golf Variant switches off the turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine whenever possible to coast along without generating any local emissions. For this reason, all eTSI engines have been paired up with an automatic dual clutch gearbox (7-speed DSG) as standard. Without DSG the imperceptible changeover between coasting phase and TSI drive would not be possible. Moreover, the 7-speed DSG shifts gears very economically to thus also preserve energy. Innovative TDI engines are also available for the Golf Variant: in this case, so-called twin dosing – dual AdBlue® injection featuring two SCR catalytic converters ( S elective C atalytic R eduction) – significantly cuts nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) to make the soon-available TDI engines some of the world’s cleanest and most efficient diesel engines in the world.

New equipment lines and comprehensive standard features. Volkswagen has reconfigured the Golf Variant’s equipment matrix: above the basic “Golf” version, there will now be the “Life”, “Style” and “R-Line” equipment lines. The basic model’s enhanced standard features already include the Lane Assist lane departure warning system, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, the new oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, XDS electronic differential lock, the Car2X traffic hazard alert, the keyless comfort start system Keyless Start and automatic lighting control. Always as standard in the vehicle interior: Digital Cockpit Pro (digital instruments), Composition online infotainment system with 8.25-inch touchscreen, We Connect and We Connect Plus online services and functions, a multifunction steering wheel, Air Care Climatronic automatic air conditioner and a Bluetooth telephone interface.

Independent model variant: the new Golf Alltrack. The second generation of the Golf Alltrack will also be launched together with the new Golf Variant. As a so-called crossover between the Golf Variant and the SUV world, the new Golf Alltrack features permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard, increased ground clearance, an all-terrain look including specific bumpers and a custom interior. With this equipment the vehicle also proves to be a true all-rounder beyond paved roads and thanks to permanent all-wheel drive it is suitable as a towing vehicle with a maximum trailer weight of 2,000 kg. In all other respects the Golf Alltrack technically corresponds to the new Golf Variant: in addition to the digitalised cockpit, features include optional assist systems, such as Travel Assist (assisted driving up to 210 km/h) and the new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights.

Successful model. The Golf Variant has formed a permanent part of the Golf product range since 1993 with around 3 million units sold. To this day, a total of five generations of the model have been launched, each based on the hatchback version platform of the respective Golf generation. The models aiming to satisfy global demands are currently produced at the Wolfsburg site in Germany.

Moscow City Golf Club

It is centrally located, just off Kutuzovsky Prospect, within 5 minutes drive from the Victory Park and the Triumphal Arch. Right in the center, yet green and picturesque with lakes and 15 Century Church next to it. Moscow City Golf Club was the first one to open in Russia on September 15, 1987 at the urban wasteland on the street Dovzhenko held long-awaited 'ground breaking' - famous sportsmen Pele, Mike Tyson, Sven Tumba and Alexander Ragulin made symbolic throws with the golf clubs. This day is considered to be the day of foundation of Moscow City Golf Club. The founder of the club is Sven (Tumba) Johansson ex World Champion hockey player. Thousands of golf fans gather here every season.

Throughout its history, Moscow City Golf Club tries to maintain and develop friendly relations with the golf clubs around the world, organizing the exchange of delegations, inter-club tournaments, social events, thereby making the life of the club members more interesting. Moscow City Golf Club has signed a cooperation agreement with American Golf Club 'Deep Cliff Golf Course', Finnish 'Aura Golf', French 'Cannes Mandle' and Cyprus' Aphrodite Hills Golf '.

Each year Moscow City Golf Club holds a lot of different tournaments and activities like: children's charity tournaments and much more attracting numerous visitors.

June 26, 2004 the Club House was open again after restoration. The opening ceremony was attended by the founder of the Moscow City Golf Club Sven Tumba Johansson and officials, senior officials from the Moscow Government.

As a result, the restoration Club House was transformed into a wonderful place for relaxition and organizing events. It has spacious and luxuriously furnished rooms available for the members of the Moscow City Golf Club: restaurant, golf bar, library, cigar and billiard room, conference room, office «Old Tom», Beauty Salon & SPA, gym, showers, saunas and relaxation rooms with personal lockers. Interior of the Club House was completed in classic English style by the famous designer from Hong Kong Garvin Chen (architect Garvin Chen).

Moscow City Golf Club has a nine holes field. Six of the nine holes are par-4 and three holes are par-3. The total playing distance is 2.343 metres. Detailed description of each hole you can find on the site of the Moscow City Golf Club with the plan.

Moscow City Golf Club is a wonderfull place with impecable service, the members can gain privileges in foregn golf clubs including in the International Association of the Clubs.

Awesome ride! Love the Audi wheels had those on the kids MK5 Jetta. Was is imported I see it's got the Euro plate bumper. As for the timing chain here a video showing the procedure, although he has the engine out you can still use it as guide (he does have some good tips), you'll need to drop the tranny to do this and the clutch. Never done a VR6 Syncro but other then the extra output shaft can't see it being more work the a regular VR6 front wheel drive. Lots of tutorial out there regarding timing chain replacement. As for the clutch and gasket maybe someone can chime in regarding those. I'm actually going in the opposite direction with 268 cams and a MK4 head gasket to raise compression.

Is golf catching on in Russia? Jack Nicklaus’s designers have certainly been busy there

Golf is played in more than 200 countries and territories around the world, but until fairly recently, Russia wasn’t one of them.

Its introduction to the game came just 30 years ago with the opening of the country’s first course, Moscow City Golf Club, a nine-hole layout on the fringes of the capital.

At the time, Russia was still part of the Soviet Union. But while the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, gave his blessing to the project, the real driving force was the Swedish golf star, Sven “Tumba” Johansson, who announced his plans to build the course while floating on a boat down the Moscow River, whacking golf balls into the water under the bemused watch of party apparatchiks.

As if that weren’t entertainment enough, there was the club’s groundbreaking ceremony, in late 1987, where the motley assortment of celebrities in attendance (Mike Tyson, Sean Connery and Pele, among them) solidified golf’s status in the country as a little more than a curiosity.

That was then, this is now.

In the world’s ninth most populous country there are more than a dozen 18-hole courses, a handful of nine-hole layouts and myriad projects in the works.

The most recent to be completed is Raevo Golf and Country Club, outside Moscow, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that opened earlier this month.

Nicklaus Signature courses are relative rarities that come at a cost and carry prestige, but Raevo is not the first in the Moscow area. It’s the third, giving the city and its surrounds a greater concentration of Nicklaus Signature courses than any major capital in the world.

This depth charge of Russian golf course development has been propelled in large part by economic shifts that have generated great reservoirs of private wealth. But the boom has also happened in the face of an inconvenient fact: Russia is not an easy place to grow the game.

Aside from having next to nothing in the way of golf tradition, the country enjoys little in the way of a golf season. Winters are long. Summers are short. Turf can have a tough time taking root. If you’re itching to play on a Moscow getaway, you should aim between mid-May and mid-October.

Throw in rocky, clay-based soil — far from the friendliest for course construction — and you understand why Russian sporting culture features more slap-shots on ice than chip shots around the green.

Yet golf progresses.

Over the past decade-plus, Dirk Bouts, a design associate with Nicklaus Design, has made about 80 trips to Russia, spending long stretches on the ground consulting on course renovations and overseeing new construction. During Bouts’s early visits, the majority of golfers he crossed paths with were expats. In more recent years, that demographic breakdown has turned on its head.

“The first time I went, golf’s presence was pretty much non-existent,” Bouts says. “But you see it taking root. It’s becoming more democratic. You have people making a decent visit. Now, it seems like every time I go back, there are more Russians out on the course.”

Just as picking up the game involves a learning curve, so does building courses in a fledgling golf market. The first Nicklaus Signature course in Russia was Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club, which opened in 2008 outside Moscow after a drawn-out five years of construction — a process prolonged by inexperienced Russian contractors working challenging terrain with outmoded equipment.

By 2014, though, when it came time to cut the ribbon on Skolkovo, the second Nicklaus Signature design outside the capital, the work crews were more seasoned, the equipment upgraded and the entire process streamlined. The job took four years. It’s since gotten more efficient. The start-to-finish work on Raevo was a comparatively scant three years.

The resulting course is a sylvan beauty that spills through a woodsy landscape, west of the capital, with natural creeks and lakes as ornamentation, and gentle hills and valleys that lend plenty of movement. Stretched to the tips, the course plays 7,245 yards, plenty of heft to handle tournaments. The turf is creeping bentgrass, and the sand-capping and extensive drainage beneath it is designed to stretch the golf season to its fullest.

“Instead of mid-May to mid-October,” Bouts says, “we’re hoping for something more like mid-April to end of October.”

This month marked a soft opening for Raevo, as the clubhouse is not yet completed. When the grand opening takes place, celebrities will no doubt be in attendance, Nicklaus among them.

Golf in Russia has gotten serious.
