Five-Star Sailing & Boat Tours ★★★★★

Sail Acadia

We were blown away by the service at Sail Acadia. We did a mid-morning private tour for 7 of us. We were able to bring our own mimosas :) Our captain and first mate were knowledgeable, inviting, friendly and easy going. They were very welcoming to our pup! They had blankets and cups on board. Definitely recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our sunset cruise with Mike and Kelly. Mike told some great stories of the area, we took wine and dinner to have on the boat, and we enjoyed seeing guillemots and porpoises in the bay. The wind was very light that evening so we had to motor a bit, but it was such a treat to be out on the water on a 120 year old wooden sail boat. We loved it!

We booked a 3 hour sunset sail and it was so much fun. It wasn't the windiest day, but being on the water on a beautiful summer night watching the sun go down can't be beat. We saw plenty of porpoises and other sea wildlife throughout the ride. Bonus points: the tour is BYOB so we brought a bottle of wine with us and the crew provided cheese, crackers and snacks. Thanks for having us!

An awesome experience we can't recommend more highly. Not only was it a fantastic sailing experience, the crew were informative about the area, history, wildlife and the things we were seeing along the way. The crew was great, the boat charming and historic. The best afternoon we have had in Maine for as long as we can remember!

The Ambergris

The Ambergris’ design is based on a Pinky Schooner, a New England boat that was used in the 1800s for fishing and hauling cargo. She’s 60 feet on deck and 80 feet overall. We only take six passengers, so there’s plenty of room on her wide decks to enjoy the sail. Join us for a lovely Maine sailing trip today!

Ambergris’ Story

Captain Patrick Reilly was a sailor in search of a ship.

He had grown up sailing in Maine and started working boats as a teenager. By the time he was 18, he had earned his USCG captain’s license and started working as a yacht captain, sailing all over the world. He also had several boats of his own, the latest of which he had recently sold in Central America.

He found the Ambergris in Florida where she had been lying for the past 10 years. She was a bare hull with a half-rotten foremast, but her steel construction was sound and with a lot of work Patrick saw that she would be a fine sea boat.

Patrick, his partner Erin and their friends motored the Ambergris over to the Bahamas for the rest of the winter where they scraped off the barnacles from her bottom, reinforced the rotten mast and built a jury rig to sail her back to Maine.

That summer they worked on new masts and rigging for the Ambergris, making her seaworthy before sailing back to the Caribbean. Since then they have sailed thousands of more miles aboard the Ambergris between the Caribbean and her summer home in Maine.

How We Board the Ambergris for the Acadia Boat Tour

The Ambergris will be waiting for us on her mooring out in the harbor. To get out to her, we’ll take our ship’s boat, which was originally a lifeboat for a fishing boat from Newfoundland. To get aboard the Ambergris, we’ll climb a short ladder up the ship’s side.

Please let us know if you have mobility issues and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

We’ll meet here. Our office at 172 Clark Point Road

Beautiful and relaxing. We went in the fall so the weather was perfect. I also loved the history behind the boat. Highly recommend!

Lovely sail with a lovely captain!

The four of us had the boat to ourselves with Patrick, our captain. One of us was an experienced sailor and enjoyed talking "shop" with Patrick. The boat is very stable and no chance of getting seasick. Lots of space to walk around the deck. Great way to spend the afternoon. Thank you Patrick!

Great trip!

Friendly captain. Good boat. All around fun ride. The weather was beautiful. The views were impressive. Good speed.

Excellent sail on a large craft!

We had an excellent sail though Somes Sound! Captain Patrick was a joy to chat with when the wind was light and the most adept sailing captain when the wind picked up! Highly recommend!

You make the memories. We make the arrangements.

Bar Harbor Maine

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor, Maine, a quintessential Maine coastal village perched on the eastern shore of Mt. Desert Island, is a must stop visit by crewed yacht charter on a yacht charter of New England when cruising through “Down East” Maine .” Facing a large harbor and surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor offers something for everyone. Stop in Bar Harbor on a crewed yacht charter, and be the first to see the sunrise in the United States on any given day, from the top of Mount Cadillac in Acadia National Park. Visit the museums and explore the many shops filled with typical Maine souvenirs. And, of course, enjoy a feast of Maine lobster choosing from a selection ranging from a simple but tasty lobster roll to a full lobster boil. All of this and more is available when sailing into Bar Harbor on a crewed yacht charter.

Originally, when settled in the 1700’s, this town was named and known as Eden, not being re-named Bar Harbor until 1913. By the late 1800’s, Eden rivaled Newport, Rhode Island , as a “Gilded Age” summer playground for the very wealthy, with huge mansions and coastal hotels built to enjoy the cooling summer breezes off the Atlantic Ocean.

In October of 1947 a disastrous fire burned nearly half the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. 67 palatial summer houses on Millionaires’ Row, five historic grand hotels and 170 permanent homes were destroyed. The town of Bar Harbor survived and exists today much as that which remained after the fire.

What to See and Do in Bar Harbor, Maine

Millionaires Row: In the 19th century, Bar Harbor, Maine was a premier summer resort, with cooling summer breezes, featuring the largest resort hotel at that time in America. Nearby, the quickly dubbed Millionaire’s Row area along ocean front West Street, became synonymous with Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, as a location of lavish summer homes. West Street featured a line of private summer mansions for families with last names such as Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Astor, and Mellon. For an ocean side view of these mansions, only available to meander at low tide, take the Bar Island Walk, an interesting less than one-mile long walk across the shell-covered sand bar connecting Mt. Desert Island to Bar Island

The Historical Museum: Open afternoons, this museum is home to an exhibit of photographs, clothing and other historic items from the “Gilded Age”.

Abbe Museum: Maine is an area rich in Native American culture and history, which is celebrated at the Abbe Museum. Located in the heart of town, this museum, associated with the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, highlights the history and culture of the Native people in Maine, the Wabanaki.

Bar Harbor Whale Museum: Located on West Street, the Bar Harbor Whale Museum is free to the public, being supported entirely from donations, and is about marine life in Maine, specifically whales. The large whale skeletons, and other natural exhibits of marine mammals, stranded locally, were prepared by the students and staff of the College of the Atlantic.

Bass Harbor Head Light: Built in 1858, and still fully operational, this lighthouse is located on the southwestern reach of Acadia National Park; and warns mariners about Bar Harbor Bar, and guards the southern entrance of Blue Hill Bay. Now on the National Historic Register, the U.S. Coast Guard mans the station, which is not open to the public; however, for a closer look, visitors are welcome on the grounds.

Bar Harbor Shops & Restaurants

Include Bar Harbor as a stop on your yacht charter itinerary of “Down East” Maine, and wander the streets of this historic town, visiting the various shops and museums, stopping for a taste of lobster and perhaps to sample the brew of a local microbrewery. And, enjoy the outdoors surrounding Bar Harbor where mountains meet the sea in Acadia National Park.

Will we see lighthouses? You will pass Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse as you leave the harbor, no matter your trip plan. Bear Island Lighthouse, Duck Island Lighthouse, Blue Hill Light and Burnt Coat Lighthouse are all in the area as well.  If lighthouses are your thing we can reach several others with a longer trip.

Do you offer whale watching?  Whales are most often fairly far from our harbor, but we can take you out to the open ocean to look for them. We have the best luck from Mid July to August. A four hour minimum trip is needed to book if you’d like to specifically look for whales. As with any wildlife, we cannot guarantee a sighting, but we always have a great time looking.

What about puffins? Puffins have two large nesting colonies on the Maine coast, which are 25-30 miles from Bass Harbor (so you have a long run down the coast to visit one of those areas). They are typically there nesting from June until  first week in July. A four hour trip is recommended to visit the nesting islands. During our 2022 and 2023 seasons, we were able to see some puffins on a nearby island. There were 12-20, and we are hopeful they are beginning to nest here regularly. If they return in 2024, this will allow a chance to see puffins with just a two hour booking.

What should I bring?

  • Bring layers of warm clothing. Even if it’s hot on land, it can be up to 20 degrees cooler on the water.
  • Bring any food or drinks including alcohol you wish for the trip. There is a cooler on board, bring ice if you wish.
  • Other items you may want: camera, sunscreen, binoculars, hat, sunglasses.
  • You may bring your well behaved pet.

How do I find you? We are located at 12 Little Island Way, in Bass Harbor, just 30 minutes from Bar Harbor, ME. Meet your captain down on the dock at the time of departure, our office may be unmanned and the boat may be returning from another trip.

Island Explorer Bus: Bus 7, stop H More info about how to find us, maps and address on our Contact page

What about the weather? We will cancel your trip due to poor weather and we try to reschedule, if that doesn’t work you will receive a refund. Rain, fog, wind and swells are taken into consideration as we want you to have an enjoyable trip. Weather is often drastically different on the water than on land, trust your captain to make the call.

Is there a restroom on the boat? There is a clean port-a-potty at our office and a Marine head on the boat (no sink).

Top Destinations to Experience when Chartering the Amalfi Coast in 2024

Get the inside scoop of what makes the amalfi coast such a special charter destination..

Explore the Amalfi Coast aboard a premier charter yacht and immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty and cultural richness of Italy’s most scenic coastline. Charter broker Molly Playfair provides your guide to experiencing the Amalfi Coast like a local, packed with must-see spots and insider tips.

Why Explore Amalfi by Yacht?

Navigating the Amalfi Coast by yacht isn’t just about luxury; it’s the best way to access secluded coves and stunning waterfront scenes inaccessible by land. The short distances between the charming coastal towns like Positano, Sorrento, and the island of Capri make yachting the ideal mode of travel, offering scenic views and a hassle-free way to explore the region’s rich offerings.

Capri: Dining and Natural Beauty

Capri is famed not just for its upscale dining under aromatic lemon trees but also for the Blue Grotto, a magical sea cave where the water glows an ethereal blue. Enjoy a meal at La Capannina, where local dishes like “Ravioli Capresi” are served with flair, or visit the lesser-known but equally enchanting Villa Jovis, the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’s ancient Roman palace.

Cetara: Culinary Delights
