Which certificate to become a skipper? Capitaine 200, Yachtmaster or Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT

skipper professionnel a la barre d'un voilier captnboat

The profession of skipper is demanding and highly regulated. It must meet strict training requirements depending on the type of mission, the flag of the boat…

So which certificate should you choose to become a professional skipper and practice according to the rules? To give you an idea of the different possibilities, we present you with 3 major command titles that are widespread in Europe. These are the Capitaine 200 (French title), the Yachtmaster (English certificate limited to yachting) and the Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT (Belgian title).

Advantages and disadvantages, price and training center, we explain everything!

1. Becoming a professional skipper: a regulated profession

A. skipper, a position of great responsibility.

The skipper (or captain) is in charge of driving the boat. He is the “chief on board”, and must ensure order and safety, while carrying out his mission: charter, coaching or boat delivery.

As a ship’s captain, he has an important responsibility in the good realization of a navigation. He is the one who will decide on the maneuvers, itineraries and behaviors to adopt in order to guarantee the safety of the passengers and the boat.

From this responsibility and from the skills required to drive a boat, the obligation to justify maritime professional training titles arises . This obligation is necessary to exercise the profession of skipper on a commercial basis, which means for remuneration.

B. The training obligations of a professional skipper

In order to sell his services as a skipper, the latter must justify the qualifications and trainings required to carry out the mission.

The training requirements depend on several parameters, including the type of boat (motor or sail), the flag and tonnage of the boat , the type of mission (boat delivery, charter or coaching)…

We are going to present you the 3 most common certificates to be a professional skipper on pleasure boats.

2. Capitaine 200, Yachtmaster and Commercial Yachting Master 200 GT, 3 options to become a professional skipper

A. the capitaine 200.

The Capitaine 200 title, issued by the Merchant Navy, is the most common on France.

The Capitaine 200 is a professional navigation title that allows you to sail as a skipper on motorboats up to 200 gross tons , which means medium-sized boats (~24 meters). It is limited to 20 miles from the coast .

With its “Sailing” module , the Capitaine 200 also allows to drive sailing boats without any distance limitation from the coast .

In addition to the Capitaine 200 , there are some mandatory complementary training courses :

  • A Basic Safety Training (BST)
  • At least a Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC)
  • A Medical Training Certificate (EM1, 2 ,3)
  • A Medical Checkup (ENG1)

➡️ Without these training courses, the Capitaine 200 , such as the Capitaine 200 “Sailing”, cannot be effective.

- Advantages of the Capitaine 200

The Capitaine 200 allows to work commercially on boats waving the French flag. Its limitation of 200 UMS allows to cover the majority of the French fleet and offers to skippers many possibilities of navigation.

In addition, the Capitaine 200 is an STCW certificate , which means that a skipper holding a Capitaine 200 can easily work on foreign flags (especially under flags whose country is a signatory of the STCW Convention: Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia…). Some countries that are signatories to this Convention can request a visa recognition . This is notably the case of the United Kingdom.

marins professionnels manoeuvrant sur un voilier captnboat

- Disadvantages of the Capitaine 200

The training to obtain this navigation title is quite expensive : between 6 000 to 10 000 €; and requires a significant investment in time (~12 weeks to follow the 5 training modules). Moreover, once the Capitaine 200 title is obtained, it is necessary to justify 12 months of effective navigation (as second in command, seaman or other) to “patent” the title and be able to exercise the function of Captain.

The prerogatives of the Capitaine 200 are limited to motorboats. The “Sailing” module is required to work on a sailboat.

⚠ Please note 1: The Capitaine 200 as well as the additionnal training courses must be renewed globally every 5 years. The revalidation/recycling of these titles has a significant cost: between 150 and 1 000 € depending on the title to renew.

⚠ Please note 2: Merchant Navy certificates do not allow you to work as a sailing instructor. For these types of missions, the French regulations require state diplomas: BPJEPS, BEE, DEJEPS…

- Where to take the training to obtain the Capitaine 200?

There are many schools and training centers approved to take the Capitaine 200 in France. For example, La Macif in Marseille, the Ecole de Formations Maritimes (EFM) in Les Sables d’Olonne, the Centre Européen de Formation Continue Maritime in Concarneau… Simply register for the proposed sessions.

The Capitaine 200 can be financed, in whole or in part, by the PTA (Personal Training Account, CPF in French).

The Capitaine 200 is delivered by the French Maritime Affairs.

B. The Yachtmaster

The most common title for working internationally is the Yachtmaster. Indeed, the Yachtmaster is an English title of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), recognized by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA). It is valid for all the territories of the British crown, the Red Flag; and thus in many countries of the world . It allows skippers to command pleasure boats up to 24 meters long, without distance limitation with the Ocean extension. It has 3 levels, each with limitations: Coastal (60 Nm), Offshore (150 Nm), and Ocean .

The Yachtmaster must be completed with a “Commercially Endorsed” mention to be used on commercial services and to be professionally recognized internationally. To obtain this endorsement, the skipper must obtain the Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) certificate, the Basic Safety Training (BST), and the MCA Medical Examination (ENG1) .

With a Yachtmaster, seamen can perform charter and boat delivery missions as well as training/coaching missions.

- Advantages of the Yachtmaster:

A large part of the pleasure boats in the world are under British flag or Red Flag (Bermuda, BVIs, Jersey…). Having an English certificate opens the doors to international yachting.

The cost of the training to obtain a Yachtmaster is less expensive than the Capitaine 200 “Sailing”: count between 2 200 and 2 500 €.

The title of Yachtmaster being acquired for life , it allows you to work for private shipowners under the Red Flag without any renewal. However, the additional training courses (BST, ENG1…) must be renewed respectively every 5 and 2 years to renew the Commercial Endorsement which allows international recognition . Overall, this is a big saving compared to the Capitaine 200 certificate.

The Yachtmaster is an exam without any previous training. Although weeks of training are highly recommended, it can be taken very quickly for experienced seamen who wish to become more professional.

The Yachtmaster takes into account the sailing experience gained prior to the exam to allow immediate access to the job of Captain without the need to validate sea time with a lower position (as for the Capitaine 200 ).

The training to obtain this title is 100% in English , which allows you to acquire and justify a sufficient level of English to maneuver a boat.

voilier-mer-skipper-professionnel

B. Disadvantages of the Yachtmaster

The Yachtmaster is not recognized by the French State and some other countries as a command title. It cannot be the subject of a visa recognition as it stands; and therefore cannot be used to work on the flags of these countries.

⚠ Please note 1: The Master 200 GT can easily be obtained for seamen who already hold a Yachtmaster. All that is required is to pass the Master 200 GT oral exam. This is a good way to be authorized to work on French flag with a Yachtmaster .

⚠ Please note 2: Visas recognition issued by France are only valid for 5 years , so they must be renewed.

The prerogatives of the Yachtmaster are specific for each title. The Yachtmaster Sailing is required to command a sailboat, while the Yachtmaster Engine is required for a motorboat.

The Yachtmaster exam is taken completely in English.

- Where to take the training to obtain a Yachtmaster?

To obtain a Yachtmaster, you must pass an exam that includes an assessment of your navigation, maneuvering and safety at sea skills. You must also demonstrate a certain level of English.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is based in the United Kingdom, but it has approved training centers around the world, including France. There are several sailing schools in France that offer Yachtmaster training courses.

To find an RYA accredited sailing school, you can visit the RYA website which lists all the accredited schools.

C. The Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT

The Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT (C-Yachting 200 GT) is a specific Belgian certificate for vessels up to 200 gross tons. It is a certification title issued by the Belgian Maritime administration that attests to the holder’s ability to command as Captain, navigate safely and manage the crew and passengers of a commercial yacht.

To obtain a Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT, the seaman must first justify a significant navigation experience (or hold a Yachtman…), but also compulsory complementary trainings:

  • A Medical Training Certificate (EM1, 2, 3)

Without these trainings, the Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT cannot be effective.

The Master Commercial Yachting is an STCW qualification recognized by the signatory countries of the Convention to perform boat delivery, charter and coaching missions.

It is delivered by the approved training institutes.

- Advantages of the Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT

Most European countries and signatories of the STCW Convention recognize Commercial Yachting as such, and do not require a visa recognition. When a visa is required (as is the case in France and the United Kingdom), it is generally very easy to obtain .

The Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT is also a training course delivered in English and can be obtained in 6 months for the most hurried. The exam takes place in Belgium or France.

The Master Commercial Yachting takes into account the sailing experience made before the training. Thus, following the success of the exam, the certificate allows you to immediately exercise the profession of Captain without the need to validate a sea time with a lower position (as for the Capitaine 200 ).

The prerogatives of the Master Commercial Yachting are valid for both sailing and motor vessels .

- Disadvantages of the Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT

If the Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT is a patent recognized by France (unlike the Yachtmaster) and the United Kingdom, it must however be the subject of an application for a visa recognition for these 2 countries. The holders of a Commercial Yachting can therefore work under the French and British flags, subject to applying for a visa recognition.

Part of the exam is in English, which can be both a disadvantage for people who are not comfortable in English and an advantage for a profession that is definitely internationally oriented.

⚠ Please note: The Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT is an STCW certificate; as such, the mandatory additional training courses (GOC/ROC, BST…) must be renewed every 5 years. The holders must then apply for a renewal of the certificate to the competent authority: The Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport .

- Where to follow the training to obtain a Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT?

In general, the training includes theoretical and practical courses, as well as a certain number of hours of navigation.

The cost of the training will depend on the training organization you choose and the duration of the training. List of Belgian approved training organizations.

Capt’n Boat recommendation: The Yachter

The Yachter is an approved training organization that offers E-learning courses (at home from your computer) that can be adapted to the candidates. Via this organization, you can obtain your Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT (Capitaine Master 200 GT in their website) in minimum 3 months or more depending on your schedule, your constraints… The courses are concrete and the instructors are demanding and caring.

Throughout the training, candidates are supervised by a professional STCW instructor. Private lessons can be arranged as an option as well as a face-to-face session with a mock exam. The Yachter also trains for the Master Commercial Yachting 500 GT (Capitaine Master 500 GT) and Master 500 GT Unlimited (Capitaine Master 500 GT Unlimited).

logo-the-yachter-centre-de-formation-maritime-e-learning

The theoretical exam allows you to obtain the title of Officer Of Watch (OOW200). It takes place over 4 days in France or in Belgium. The practical exam is done in one day on a sailing and/or motor vessel in the South of France.

⚠ Please note: This training is intended for sailors who already have a training title: offshore license, BACPN, Yachtmaster, Capitaine 200 . It is the ideal solution to obtain an additional navigation title and/or start a professional practice .

3. Conclusion

The profession of skipper requires certain skills and qualifications. The Capitaine 200 , the Yachtmaster or the Commercial Yachting Master 200 GT allow each to exercise the position of command on board within certain limitations.

If the Yachtmaster is the most internationally recognized certificate, it is not recognized in France and does not allow you to work on boats waving the French flag.

The Capitaine 200 , completed with its “Sailing” module, is THE French title, however it is long and expensive to obtain.

The Master Commercial Yachting 200 GT , on the other hand, is recognized in France as well as in the United Kingdom, but requires a visa recognition to be effective in these countries.

⛵ So which patent do you opt for?

Yachtsman Sumner “Huey” Long 1921-2011

Sumner “Huey” Long

Sumner “Huey” Long, an international yachtsman, shipping executive, and winner of many of the world’s most challenging and dangerous ocean races, died of lymphoma on December 4, at age 90.

Creating a succession of hi-tech racing sailboats named Ondine , and spanning the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s, Mr. Long won every major ocean race in the world, including the Transatlantic Race on four occasions (a record), the Newport-Bermuda Race (establishing a course record), the Sydney-Hobart Race (establishing a course record), the Fastnet Race, and the Buenos Aires-Rio Race (also establishing a course record).

Ondine II was the first all-aluminum ocean racer ever built. A 57-foot yawl designed by Bill Tripp, she went on to win races against much larger opponents, sometimes due to clever innovations by Mr. Long. One of these, an ultra-heavy spinnaker, almost caused a mutiny when in a 50-knot Atlantic gale, Mr. Long fought with his crew to get it raised, earning him the title of “a modern day Captain Bligh” by Sports Illustrated. A subsequent yacht, Ondine VII was designed by German Frers. That yacht won the first Maxi Yacht World Championship in 1985, held at Newport, Rhode Island. In that event, Ondine VII was victorious in the first on-the-water protest hearing ever held, a practice that is now standard in world-class match racing events.

Mr. Long helped boost the careers of many aspiring world-class skippers who crewed for him, including Ted Turner who went on to win the America’s Cup in 1977, Bill Koch, the brother of David and Charles Koch, who won the Cup in 1992, and Mr. Long’s son Russell who, under his father’s guidance, introduced corporate sponsorship to the Cup event, and became the youngest American skipper in Cup history.

Long, the son of Lithuanian immigrants, was raised in Boston where his family started a jewelry business. He graduated from Brookline High School, received an appointment to the Annapolis Naval Academy, and after serving as acting chief officer on a merchant marine vessel in World War II, received degrees from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This led to a career in shipping and ultimately established Mr. Long as one of the most successful tanker brokers in the world. Among his clients and friends were Aristotle Onassis and many other prominent ship owners.

Mr. Long, who also had a reputation as somewhat of a bon vivant, would often entertain celebrity guests on his yachts, some of whom crewed for him in major ocean races. These included HRH King Harald of Norway (who was addressed by the crew as “Harry the Hat” for the wide brims he wore to protect his pale skin), HRH King Olav of Norway, HRH Prince Albert II of Monaco, HRH King Juan Carlos of Spain, The Aga Khan, Teddy Kennedy Sr. and Jr., and beauty queens such as Miss Australia and Miss Sweden. Mr. Long’s last boat, a 105 footer named Ondine VIII , built in 1988, was considered at the time one of the world’s most elegant sailing yachts, was co-owned with Charles Evans, co-founder of fashion house Evan-Picone and the producer of Academy Award winning film, Tootsie.

Mr. Long is survived by his second wife of 30 years, Suzanne McDonnell Long, his sons Harry and Jack Long, and Russell Long, from his first wife, Jane Bagley Lehman.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Long at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, New York, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7.

Paul Picot C-Type Yachtman 3 Watches

metier yachtman

Paul Picot offers these new C-Type Yachtman watches for 2011. The naming schemas confuse me. The C-Type I know, but I am not sure whether these are C-Type and Yachtman watches, or C-Type Yachtman watches!? Screw it, I’m just going to use the Yachtman name for now. Yachtman 3 to be exact – which sounds like an awful movie name. The watches are still cool looking, though, and this year they make equal jabs at Rolex and IWC wanting to be something like a Submariner or Aquatimer.

Regardless of what the Yachtman watches are trying to be, they can stand on their own. As you can see, there are two versions of the new Yachtmaster 3. The “Classic” three-hand automatic and the “Chronograph.” Like the Aquatimer watches, Paul Picot says the bezel inserts are sapphire but that there will also be all steel bezel options.

metier yachtman

Size wise, the Yachtman 3 watches are decent at 43mm wide and the cases are steel. They are water-resistant to 200 meters and have AR coated sapphire crystals. The watch dials are textured, which is nice. They have little waves that are meant to remind of you being in the water (or drowning) and feeling secure that your watch will survive. The blue and yellow dials are fun and sporty but might be a bit too reminiscent of IWC Aquatimers. There are likely to be other color combos available as well.  Overall, I am a big fan of the dials for their polished looks with easy to read hands and markers, and it is OK that they aren’t super unique.

metier yachtman

For that Rolex Sub homage look, the Yachtman Classic is the way to go. I almost like it better than the Chronograph. Paul Picot makes their own interpretation of the Submariner dial and, to be honest, I think it is one of the nicest ones out there that combines the making brand’s DNA with that Submariner look that they are trying to emulate. Inside the watch are Swiss ETA automatic movements. The Yachtman 3 Chronograph has a Valjoux 7750 while the Yachtman 3 Classic has an ETA 2892 – or similar, I don’t know exactly which. Paul Picot obfuscates the matter by calling the movements their PP1600 and PP1700 – where do they come up with these names? Prices are $2,750 – $3,190 for the Yachtman, and $4,200 – $4,290 for the Yachtman Chronograph. Look for the new Paul Picot C-Type Yachtman 3 Classic and Chronograph watches soon.

The team at Joe Lamb Jr. made our rental experience a great success. The paperless rental agreement and keyless entry made everything a breeze. They also let us know of HVAC maintenance during our stay. The AC by the way works great and One Hour HVAC did a thorough inspection. HVAC happens to be my field and I would highly recommend their services. Paul Robinson Stayed: 9/24/2023

Yachtsman Steakhouse Review: Disney World’s Most Magnificent Meats?

metier yachtman

For the last decade, Yachtsman Steakhouse has been a staple of our Top 10 Table Service Restaurants at Walt Disney World . We’ve praised it as a carnivore’s paradise for glorious cuts of meat and the most approachable Signature Dining for guests who want something straightforward, delicious, and unfussy.

Yachtsman Steakhouse once ranked inside the top 5 on that list, and although it never hit #1, it has been a personal and sentimental favorite for years. With that said, nothing has quite lived up to our first couple of meals at Yachtsman Steakhouse during the heydey of the Disney Dining Plan, when the Porterhouse was served for one and was the size of my head.

It’s been a few years since we last revisited Yachtsman Steakhouse, and some of the recent reader reviews have not exactly instilled confidence. Nevertheless, we had ADRs here in late March until the closure nixed those plans. Since then, I’ve been “patiently” waiting for the last 527 days to devour a gigantic steak from Yachtsman–not that I’ve been counting or anything!

In terms of basic background info, Yachtsman Steakhouse is located at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and is easily accessible from there, Beach Club, BoardWalk, Swan & Dolphin, any Skyliner Resort, or even Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. No bus transportation is needed from any of those locations.

Once the Disney Dining Plan returns , Yachtsman Steakhouse is a 2-credit table service restaurant. As with all Signature Restaurants, it’s a poor use of DDP credits unless you’re on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan. For now, DVC members or Annual Passholders receive a 10% discount.

metier yachtman

Thematically, Yachtsman Steakhouse has a distinct New England nautical style. The dining room is light and airy, but punctuated with rich woods, knotty-pine beams, warm lighting, and nautical touches.

The restaurant is by no means loud, but it’s definitely unpretentious. You’ll see a range of patrons here, from families to well-dressed convention guests to older locals who have been dining at Yachtsman for years.

metier yachtman

The last Signature Restaurant we did at Walt Disney World prior to Yachtsman Steakhouse was Citricos, and the two strike clearly different tones. Yachtsman is more like a supper or country club, whereas Citricos is akin to a haute cuisine establishment.

I’d hesitate to take kids to Citricos, whereas I’d have no such issue with Yachtsman. (That’s just me, though–it’s Walt Disney World, so children are to be expected pretty much anywhere.)

metier yachtman

Both are fine dining, but they have very different “goals” and approaches. The difference is that you go to somewhere like Citricos to sample inventive cuisine and creative flavors, and may drop over $100 while not leaving full.

By contrast, Yachtsman Steakhouse isn’t pushing the envelope and is likewise expensive, but you might need to be wheeled out of there. Each have their place, and appeal to different guests–or even moods of the same guests.

metier yachtman

One of the things we truly appreciate about Yachtsman Steakhouse is that it’s still allowed to be itself, free of any totally unnecessary “modernization.”

Some might see the photos here, particularly the carpet and woods, and think this looks dated. We fiercely disagree–this is completely on theme, and has a delightfully personable and warm atmosphere.

metier yachtman

Before sunset, light pours in through the restaurant’s many windows, making it bright and fitting of Yachtsman Steakhouse’s more jovial atmosphere.

At night, the dining room is darker and moodier with the warm and low lighting providing a romantic environment. Or at least as romantic as aggressively eating a huge hunk of meat and garlic-laden sides can be. On second thought, perhaps “subdued setting” is the more apt term.

metier yachtman

As always, dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse began with bread service.

The iconic onion pull-apart roll was predictably fantastic. It’s substantial but flaky, and you can peel off its layers, like an onion! It pairs perfectly with either the pink Himalayan salt butter or the roasted garlic…or both.

metier yachtman

If you’re looking for something a bit healthier (?), there’s the multigrain cherry roll. This is dense and semi-sweet, but ultimately doesn’t hold a candle to the onion rolls.

No one is going to Yachtsman Steakhouse for multigrain rolls–it’s just not that type of establishment.

metier yachtman

We were joined by friends for the meal, and they ordered the Lobster Bisque: Lobster Biscuits, Crème Fraîche and Espelette Oil.

Both of them enjoyed this twist on the New England staple, which appeared to have a hearty amount of lobster biscuits.

metier yachtman

For one of their entrees, they ordered the 8-oz Filet Mignon served with Cognac-Truffle Butter and Truffle Fries.

While I believe that a good cut of meat should be able to speak for itself and not need to be bathed in butter for flavor, it’s hard to argue with Yachtsman’s use of that addictively delicious Cognac-Truffle Butter.

metier yachtman

For the other entree, they opted for the 16-oz Prime Rib-Eye Steak served with Blue Cheese-Shallot Butter and Truffle Fries.

After stuffing myself on steak, I didn’t do a good job of requesting extensive tasting notes, but both of our friends enjoyed their steaks. No rave reviews or overly-enthusiastic accolades, but general satisfaction seemed to be the meal’s mood.

metier yachtman

For our entree, Sarah and I ordered the Chef’s Signature Offering: 28-oz Porterhouse for Two served with Cognac-Truffle Butter and Choice of two Steakhouse Sides.

This is a behemoth, but also is priced at $139. If I recall correctly, it’s a 2-credit upgrade on the Disney Dining Plan, meaning that doing Yachtsman Steakhouse and ordering this Porterhouse will set you back 4 credits.

metier yachtman

I hate to be one of those curmudgeonly old men who shouts, “ back in my day, Coca Cola cost a nickel at the corner soda stand! ” when seeing fountain drinks for $5 at a restaurant. However, it wasn’t too long ago when this Porterhouse was for one and only 2 credits or under $60 out of pocket. (In fact, when we dined here in 2012, the 24-ounce Porterhouse cost $46.)

Of course, times and prices change–that much is to be expected–but the cost has more than tripled in less than a decade. On the plus side, it’s 4 ounces larger and comes with one additional side now. Still, it’s a steep price even when compared to other options here–or the superlative Chuletón Bone-In Rib-Eye at Toledo Steakhouse .

metier yachtman

The Chef’s Signature 28-oz Porterhouse for Two at Yachtsman Steakhouse was very good, but fell a little short of greatness.

It delivered in terms of tenderness, marbling, a robustly meaty flavor, and impressive presentation. If I weren’t paying for this and didn’t know how much it cost, I’d have no complaints. A satisfactory steak through and through, just not one that blew us away.

metier yachtman

Perhaps we’re being unrealistic, but at this price point, we simply expected more. To each their own, but I’d say it’s about $40 overpriced at $139.

We’ve done a number of porterhouse or ribeye steaks (both for one and for two) over the years. This was above average, but still middle of the pack. I’d put it behind the aforementioned counterpart at Toledo (which is now served as a 4-course dinner for two, priced at $129) and also other options at third party hotels in both the Crescent Lake and Bonnet Creek areas at Walt Disney World.

metier yachtman

Now let’s turn to the sides. For our first option, we chose the Truffle Macaroni & Cheese. An unsurprising pick given that we’re suckers for this dish.

I’ve previously remarked that there’s “no such thing” as bad truffle mac & cheese, only varying degrees of good or great. Assuming that’s true, this was the “least good” truffle mac & cheese we’ve had in years. It was surprisingly dry and lacking in flavor. None of the richness or cheesiness we’d expect.

metier yachtman

At the other end of the spectrum, the Roasted Seasonal Mushrooms were absolutely phenomenal.

Consisting of four varieties of mushrooms, these had a deeply rich flavor and were prepared in a way that let the mushrooms stand on their own while enhancing them. These mushrooms were an unexpected standout from our meal.

metier yachtman

We finished with Yacthsman’s Chocolate Cake: Dark Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Decadence Cake, Mixed Berry Curd, Peanut Butter Crunch and Mousse.

Like our Porterhouse, this signature dessert also serves two and has an impressive presentation.

metier yachtman

We had very different opinions about this. For me, this wholly embodied Yachtsman Steakhouse–a pretty but straightforward and indulgent dessert. Big and totally unpretentious, with bold but crowd-pleasing flavors.

Sarah though it was all “too much,” with over-the-top decadence, plus flavors and textures that didn’t come together particularly well. I can’t totally disagree with her–this certainly isn’t among my top 10 desserts at Walt Disney World–but the presentation coupled with the chocolate, peanut butter, and berry flavors worked well enough for me.

metier yachtman

Ultimately, Yachtsman Steakhouse has a sense of comfort and familiarity that you won’t find at many Walt Disney World restaurants anymore. Many of the Cast Members have been there for years and offer professional but personable service. The atmosphere and style are warm and welcoming. The menu is full of magnificent meats and other steakhouse favorites. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly why or how, but it’s the kind of place that would make Ron Swanson shed a single tear–and that’s something special.

However, Yachtsman Steakhouse no longer feels like the unparalleled Walt Disney World spot for steaks that it once was. Many other Signature Restaurants serve up similarly great cuts of meat, but with their own ambitious twists or more competitive pricing. Two recent additions–Toledo and Topolino’s Terrace–come to mind here, but so too do a wide range of restaurants at Disney Springs and in flagship restaurants at third party hotels that are on-site. To be sure, Yachtsman Steakhouse is still a restaurant we’ll revisit down the road, but between an improved “steak scene” elsewhere at Walt Disney World and higher prices at Yachtsman, it’s no longer the clear-cut chophouse champion.

Nothing touches the Yachtsman in my book. I’m blessed to have eaten in several steak houses across the country and this beats them all. I’ve also dined at the other signatures at WDW and the Yachtsman beats them all in my book, for a great steak dinner. When I eat at the Yachtsman, it’s an evening long experience shared with people I love, and we know how to live! Can’t wait to go back next month!

History of Yachtmann.com

Back to blog.

metier yachtman

During the days of DECEMBER 2014, Capt James Fachtmann who had faithfully served as a loyal yacht salesperson for a small yacht brokerage firm based in Florida, was confronted with the stark reality of the situation. Even though James had been the Top Sales Person for 4 out of the 5 years with the 1st year being “Rookie Broker of the Year” (DEC 2010), the last of a great many injustice had occurred by the hand of that firms leadership that awoke the entrepreneur with-in him. A line had been drawn in the sand and it had been crossed for the final time. It was time to take the road less traveled and venture out, onward, and ultimately upward.

Capt James along with his identical twin brother, Capt Richard Fachtmann, laid plans for what would soon become YACHTMANN.com Yacht Brokerage in the 1st quarter of 2015. The name was a natural evolution of the brother’s last name, Fachtmann. Difficult to pronounce properly, Fachtmann — German meaning “expert man”, could be easily mastered by 1st saying yacht man and then replacing the “Y” with a “F”. For decades the two brothers would help people with the pronunciation of Fachtmann using the words Yacht – Man. When it came time to name the new company… YACHTMANN felt natural. Born in the age of the internet “dot com” was added to help clients find our website: YACHTMANN.com

This NEW Brokerage Firm was seeded from the unfair business practices of a now defunct company. YACHTMANN.com vowed to be above all; FAIR, EQUITABLE, and ETHICAL. Traits & Best Business Practices, difficult to find in this ultra-competitive industry, certainly sets our firm apart from & above the norm. Our Motto is: Success at the BENEFIT of Others. Others being our clients, our TEAM of Licensed, Bonded, and Certified Professional Yacht Brokers, and our industry as a whole. Our Mission Statement speaks loudly to this philosophy:

Mission Statement Yachtmann.com Brokers provide the highest possible quality service to Yachts men/women globally. Our Success is dependent on the benefits we provide to you, our life long clients, in our endeavor to help make your yachting dreams reality.

The Great Steak Debate: Le Cellier or Yachtsmen Steakhouse

Sharing is caring!

On a past trip I was able to eat two of the most incredible steakhouses at Walt Disney World; Le Cellier located in Epcot’s World Showcase Canada Pavilion, and Yachtsman Steakhouse which is in the Yacht Club Resort.  I will give a review on each steak and then try (keyword is TRY) to pick which meal was my favorite!

Canada's Le Cellier Steakhouse!

First up I’ll take a look at Le Cellier Steakhouse!  Always a favorite of mine and one of the hardest ADR’s to get in all of Walt Disney World, I’ve been coming here since 2000 and have made their cheese soup many times at home for a quick “fix”.  Moving on to the entrée, I ordered the New York Strip Steak (Medium) and it came with Bercy Butter, and a side of Yukon Gold Potato Gratin.  (For those interested, this was $32 for the entre alone.)

New York Strip!

The steak came out and was extremely tender, juicy and flavorful, and was very visually appealing.  It had little to no fat that needed removed and I dug in.  The Bercy Butter that was on top of the stake enhanced the flavor so much and really was a perfect addition to this choice cut of steak.  The outside of the steak was a bit crispy around the edges which I love and each bite really felt like it would melt in your mouth.  It was simply one of the best steak’s I’ve ever had and is very hard to top.

Yachtsmen Steakhouse @ Yacht Club!

However, there’s also the wonderful Yachtsman Steakhouse located at the Yacht Club Resort near the Boardwalk and Epcot and they have many different cuts to choose from.  Based on the recommendation of a good friend who said if I loved steak, this was THE place to go and it lived up to the hype, especially the steak.  I chose the 24oz which came with a side of paprika fries and the steak was topped with Roasted Garlic Butter.  This was simply the largest steak I’ve ever ordered and I have to say it was mouth watering just from looking at it and it did not disappoint.

Yachtsmen steak main

Getting two cuts of beef in one steak is amazing (one part is the tenderloin and the other is the loin for those like me that didn’t know before!)  and I had ordered mine medium as well.  The garlic butter added a lot of flavor to the steak as well however it was more subtle and the overall flavor of the steak really came through as it was only seasoned with salt and pepper before being cooked.   The porterhouse had a bit more fat on it than the NY Strip I had in Canada however it wasn’t enough to matter and the tenderness of the steak really came through especially as I got closer to the bone.

Bottom line, these were two of the best steaks I’ve ever had and they were worth every dime (and they are worth many dimes!).  Overall if I had to pick the best meal, based only on the steak it’s quite a difficult decision.  Both were incredibly delicious and full of flavor and just simply, amazing, however if I had to pick one I would have to go with Yachtsman.  The Porterhouse was simply hands down the best steak I’ve ever had, and while I felt like I could roll out of there after eating it, I have to say, I’d gladly do it again.  It was tender, juicy and simply melted in your mouth with the garlic butter.  That being said, Le Cellier’s Steak was incredible and shouldn’t be overlooked, in fact, if one is on a budget, Le Cellier is your best option as Yachtsmen was quite expensive.

My Choice: Yachtsmen Steakhouse’s 24zo Porterhouse!

Have you tried either of these delicious meals or had steak at a different location at Walt Disney World that should be looked at?
