Key West Worlds Day No.3—Imposing Their Will

Throughout the 42-year history of the offshore powerboat racing world championships, there are tales of teams that finished in the middle of the pack on Sunday but did enough to claim the title because they had done the math to determine where they needed to finish. Then there were those winner-take-all battles in which the numbers didn’t matter because the contenders were all so close coming into the finale.

For the 222 Offshore Australia team, a Race World Offshore Key West world championship was the perfect end to a dominant season. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .

But the 2023 edition saw three teams eschewing the tradition of backing off a little on Sunday because they had been so dominant in the races on Wednesday and Friday. Instead, 222 Offshore Australia, M CON/Monster Energy and Jackhammer went right back out to the front and ran hard to grab the checkered flag and the world championships in their respective classes on Sunday.

“It’s not easy to take it easy,” said 222 Offshore Australia throttleman Giovanni Carpitella, who claimed his first Key West world title alongside driver Darren Nicholson.

Carpitella travels from Italy to race in this country while Nicholson makes the trip from his home country of Australia. The duo continued its 2023 undefeated streak winning wire to wire on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in a performance that hasn’t been seen in the larger classes since the days of Zero Defect’s streak in the mid 1990s.

For much of the Class 1 race on Sunday, the 50-foot Mystic Powerboats catamaran, df Young Logistics, with owner/throttleman Rich Wyatt and driver Hugh Fuller, ran comfortably in second, continuing to improve and looking to claim a podium spot for the world championship. Then on the 10th out of 14 laps that the Class 1 boats ran, df Young pulled into the center of the course with a mechanical issue. Throughout the season, different teams in Class 1 had been experiencing water pressure issues with the Mercury Racing 1,100-hp engines that is the specified power for the class.

john racing powerboat

With df Young pulling out, Tyler Miller and driver Myrick Coil in their 438 Skater, Monster Energy/ M CON, moved up from third to second and owner/driver Mike Falco and throttleman Billy Moore took the final podium spot. Owner/driver Carlos de Quesada and throttleman John Tomlinson ran in fourth and the positions stayed that way for the balance of the laps on the 4.5-mile course.

Further explaining his initial statement, Carpitella said that when Monster Energy passed df Young, he and Nicholson knew Miller and Coil would make a run at the lead.

“We needed to pick up our pace,” Carpitella said. “The course was really challenging because it was three conditions in one. From one to two was like a jacuzzi and coming into the harbor it was calm.”

Miller and Coil continued to show the same tenacity in Class 1 that has made them so competitive in Super Cat. They went from just wanting to make laps early in the 2023 season to being competitive and leading laps in what many consider the sport’s premier class.

More action from yesterday’s Class 1, V Extreme and Extreme competition.

For the third-place DeFalco team, getting on the podium was a strong finish to 2023 and a warning shot for the class for the upcoming season.

“Billy figured it out,” said Falco, who added that the team’s 48-foot Outerlimits hull is already sold and headed to Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. Moore will be preparing the Victory hull that he previously raced—yes the one that went airborne in Key West harbor a few years ago—for the 2024 season.

Moore said he dug into his years of experience and came up with a propeller tweak that he tried on a different boat 15 years ago. When he sent the props to Mercury Racing to be modified, the technician told him the changes couldn’t be reversed. Moore told him, “Don’t worry it’ll work.”

For the three days of racing in the southernmost city in the United States, 75 boats pre-registered and 71 were still competing on Sunday. The teams race for half points on Wednesday and Friday and full points for more laps in the finale. Friday served up the biggest conditions on the outer leg of the course from turn one to turn two, but the winds that were predicted for Sunday’s finale didn’t build as forecast. Still, there were some deceiving waves and the teams that guessed right on their setup were awarded for their efforts.

john racing powerboat

As the owner of the Team Farnsworth/Hancock Claims Fountain in the VX class, Win Farnsworth now has an offshore racing world championship to his credit.

On the course with the Class 1 boats, but in a separate start were the three entries in VX class and the Extreme 1 team. When the green flag was raised, the 42-foot Fountain, Team Farnsworth/Hancock Claims, with driver Christian McCauley and throttleman Jay Healy took to the lead, much to the delight of racing legend Peter Meyer, who was visiting the broadcast booth for the livestream. They were followed by owner/throttleman Bill McComb and driver Ed Wendt in the 40-foot Skater, Race Winning Brands . Robert Brockyer of Great Britain and driver Kirk Britto ran third in their 42-foot Fountain, Team 25 . The 42-foot MTI , JBS Racing, with owner/driver Jeff Stevenson and throttleman Michael Stancombe ran unopposed in Extreme 1.

After four of the 13 laps in the VX race, Team 25 pulled off with mechanical problems. Team Farnsworth/Hancock Claims extended its lead to run to the team owner Win Farnsworth’s first world championship followed by Race Winning Brands in second.

john racing powerboat

JBS Racing ran uncontested in the Extreme 1 class.

More Than A Feeling Even though they won races one and two, Miller and Coil in M CON/Monster Energy, their 388 Skater catamaran that had defended its national championship in Super Cat in 2023, Miller said he’ll always take the chance to run out front when the opportunity presents itself.

When the green flag flew on Friday, that opportunity was a little harder to come by because throttleman Bill Pyburn and driver Brit Lilly got a good start in their 388 Skater, Dirty Money , as did throttleman Casey Boaz and driver Rob Unnerstall in yet another 388 Skater, CR Racing/XINSURANCE . They were chased by Moore and owner/driver Chris Grant in their 388 Skater, Graydel , while throttleman Grant Bruggemann and owner/driver Wayne Valder ran fifth in their 40-foot MTI, Valder Yachts/Pro Floors .

john racing powerboat

Back-to-back Super Cat world champions, back-to-back Super Cat national champions—that’s the book on the 2023 M CON/Monster Energy season.

By the end of the first full lap of competition, M CON/Monster Energy had moved to the lead it would not relinquish for the 14-lap Super Cat race, averaging about 94 mph on its fastest lap, which was a little more conservative than the 100-mph speeds they saw on Wednesday and Friday.

Lilly and Pyburn settled into second place and continued to develop their teamwork. Lilly has piloted boats in Class 1 and Super Cat in addition to his own hulls in Mod-V. Pyburn is a longtime performance boater that is new to racing but the team has gelled quickly.

Boaz and Unnerstall held onto third place, putting their veteran experience to good use. They were two-time world champions in the Super Stock class and Boaz owns Hering Propellers so you can guarantee that CR Racing/XINSURANCE had some finely tuned wheels putting the boat’s H.P. Mafia-freshened engines’ power to the water.

Grant’s bad luck in Key West continued when Graydel pulled off the course with another mechanical issue after three laps. That moved Valder Yachts/Pro Floors up to fourth place and Vinnie Diorio and driver Matt Jamniczky in the 39-foot Outerlimits, SV Offshore/Rollin’ Transport to fifth. After owner/driver Billy Mauff and throttleman Jay Muller had to pull off with problems in their 40-foot Skater, WHM Motorsports , Muller’s sons Jax and Chase pulled up to fifth in their 40-foot Motion, Wicked.

The teams held their positions with M CON/Monster Energy taking the win and the championship. Dirty Money and CR Racing/XINSURANCE finished second and third, respectively in the race and the championship.

“It makes all the difference in the world,” Miller said of being out front. “Nobody dictates where you can go on the course. If another boat dictates to you where you need to run, it makes your boat unhappy and makes a long day.”

john racing powerboat

More action from yesterday’s Super Cat battle.

This season is Miller’s seventh throttling his boat, which goes against the traditional grain in the sport’s upper classes. Most teams are set up with an owner/driver and a hired throttleman. Miller grew up racing motocross and he runs heavy equipment every day in his professional life.

“It all coordinates with what I feel in the boat,” he said. “Running a joystick in a trench digger or a backhoe is by feel.”

The Dirty Money team is a little different as well because the owner Beau Renfroe isn’t in the boat at all. He and his wife, Tiffiney are avid performance boaters and wanted to get into the sport.

“Tiffiney and I are proud of the whole team,” Beau Renfroe said, adding that when the team gets back to its headquarters in Stuart, Fla., it will open a rigging and maintenance shop for high-performance boats.

Pyburn said he’s excited about the future of Super Cat and acknowledged the effort of his crew and the hours put in prepping the boat.

“Thirty days ago, there was nothing in that boat,” Pyburn said. “Then we got to Key West and blew a motor testing. These guys haven’t slept much.”

Of his new throttleman, Lilly said, “Bill is everything I ask for in a throttleman—I’ve got full trust in him.”

Unnerstall said he and Boaz enjoyed the race but feels that the starts need some work.

“In every start, someone was not in position,” Unnerstall said. In offshore racing, starts are managed by officials in a pace boat who try to line up the competitors in as straight a line as possible before they throw the green flag. After RWO arranged for six starts in a day, some racers said the starts were rushed to make sure all the races could take place.

The Lone Exception Continuing to wage some of the closest races in the sport, the 450R Factory Stock-class world championship came down to the wire with some questionable driving at the end. More on that in a bit.

With Shaun Torrente and owner/driver Willy Cabeza winning Wednesday in their 39-foot MTI, GC Racing , and throttleman John Tomlinson and Taylor Scism taking the checkered flag in the last corner on the last lap in their 39-foot MTI, TS Motorsports, on Friday, Sunday set up as a winner-take-all competition for the six boats in the class of 38- and 39-foot catamarans powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R outboards.

john racing powerboat

One fine lap made the world-championship-winning difference for Willy Cabeza and Shaun Torrente in GC Racing.

When the green flag waved, the first boat out of the harbor and heading into turn one was the 39-foot MTI, 151 Express, with throttleman Nick Imprescia and driver Ian Morgan. Running a close second were owner/throttleman Michel Karsenti and driver Ervin Grant in the 38-foot Doug Wright, Gladiator Canados . Throttleman Ricky Maldonado and driver Logan Adan were fourth in the 38-foot Doug Wright, Doug Wright Powerboats, followed by TS Motosports, which had the worst starting assignment in all three races, and GC Racing.

By the time the boats reached the finish line for the second lap, which is the first full tour of the 4.5-mile circuit, Gladiator Canados had moved into first followed by 151 Express, TS Motorsports, GC Racing and Edwin Scheer and Lee Murray in the 38-foot Doug Wright, Hank’s Saloon . Doug Wright Powerboats and TS Motorsports made contact in the turn in Key West harbor and the former was having problems with its new engines and fell off the pace in fifth and 151 Express had its own issues, running well back in sixth.

Averaging about 84 mph, Gladiator Canados maintained the point, followed by TS Motorsports and GC Racing for the duration of the 10-lap race. On the eighth lap, GC Racing looked like it was reeling in TS Motorsports , but then GC got caught in another boat’s wash in the harbor turn and the boat slowed before Torrente could get it going again. On the final lap, GC made a final charge going out of Key West harbor and headed toward turn one.

From turn one to turn two, GC Racing made up some time on TS Motorsports and Doug Wright Powerboats was still running but was off the pace.

john racing powerboat

More action from yesterday’s 450R Factory Stock contest.

“I told Willy, ‘Our championship is right there,’” Torrente said. “We just need one good lap to go take it.”

Tomlinson and Scism had been guarding the inside lane for most of the race and they set up to hold that position for the final turn. They passed the first buoy of the two-pin turn, but then Tomlinson said Doug Wright Powerboats turned in, blocking the lane. Scism had no choice but to turn so hard to the right that she hit her head on the inside of the canopy and sustained a concussion.

“Because they left us room going in and I had run the inside lane the entire race, I thought they would leave me room, but I should have known better,” Tomlinson said. “They’re not even in the hunt, why are they going from wide on the first buoy to close off the second buoy?”

In a text to speedonthewater.com, Maldonado said, “We don’t have much to say. We’ve been battling engine issues all week with out-of-the-box engines.”

After experiencing his own engine issues, but still persevering to finish in the points on Friday, Karsenti said his boat was set up right for Sunday’s conditions.

“We got inside of 151 and we were trimming a little higher,” Karsenti said. “But I have confidence in my driver.”

When the spray had settled, GC Racing claimed the world championship followed by Gladiator Canados and TS Motorsports .

The View Doesn’t Change Julian Maldonado had a better week than his dad, partnering with owner/driver Reese Langheim in the 32-foot Victory, Jackhammer, in the Super Stock class. As they had in the first two races of the week, the duo moved out to an early lead in the fifth race of the day on Sunday. Throttleman Scott Porta and driver A.J. Bogino gave chase in their 32-foot Doug Wright, CoCo’s Monkey , followed by owner/throttleman Billy Allen and driver John Strama in their 32-foot Doug Wright, Team Allen Lawn Care And Landscaping , and the 32-foot Doug Wright, Performance Boat Center , with Coil driving and Rusty Williams throttling.

The 11 boats in the class came out of turn two in a pretty tight bunch and Performance Boat Center hooked in front of Team Allen, causing Strama to make an evasive move that resulted in the boat rolling. Allen and Strama emerged from the boat with bumps and bruises, and the race was red-flagged while their boat was towed to the center of the course.

john racing powerboat

Jackhammer went three for three last weekend in Key West to earn its first Super Stock world championship.

Once officials cleared the course, Jackhammer resumed its lead and its primary challengers for the world title were not letting Langheim and Maldonado get away. Owner/driver Darren Kittredge and throttleman Boaz in the 32-foot Doug Wright, Northwing , ran a close second followed by owner/driver Chris Hopgood and throttleman Jay Muller in their 32-foot Doug Wright, Celsius , and CoCo’s Monkey in fourth. Owner/throttleman Loren Peters and driver Anthony Smith in the 32-foot Doug Wright, LPC , held fifth.

After a lap, CoCo’s Monkey moved around Celsius into third and the boats held their positions until the checkered flag despite a last corner charge by Northwing that came up just short.

“If you get out fast and have clean water, then you try to stay out front,” Langheim said after the race. “We had a good challenge first with CoCo’s and then with Northwing. ”

john racing powerboat

More action from yesterday’s Super Stock contest.

Langheim said that when Northwing was charging, he couldn’t see the boat coming. “My camera shut off and my mirrors were to the sky. I had no idea where they were.”

For his part, Kittredge said, “We tried everything. The class is so high level, the boat flew level and it was predictable.”

Porta, who hasn’t raced in five years, said, “Learning this motor has been a fast download for me. It felt so much faster initially and then things started slowing down so I could process them.”

Playing it Smart After taking a win on Wednesday and a second place on Friday, owner/throttleman Steve Miklos and driver Steven Fehrmann in their 29-foot Extreme, El Bandito/Sunprint , were in the driver’s seat for the championship on Sunday. It’s often said that a team can’t win the championship on day one, but if something goes wrong, it makes it much harder to take the overall victory.

john racing powerboat

Sunprint’s Steve Miklos and Steve Fehrmann weren’t even sure they were coming to Key West this year, but it turned out to be more than worth the effort.

Lilly and throttleman Jay Wholtman in their 29-foot Extreme, LSB Rev-X Oil/Speed Marine , were the perfect example of the adage. They broke a drive on Wednesday and then smoked the fleet on Friday and Sunday, but El Bandito Sunprint finished Friday and Sunday in second place, which was enough to give them the championship.

The father-son team of throttleman Steve Kildahl and driver Stephen Kildahl in their 29-foot Extreme, Boatfloater.com, finished third all three days, which gave them the final podium spot. The team of driver Ken Bollinger and throttleman Forrest Riddle in the 30-foot Phantom, Fastboys, wound up fourth in the overall standings after running third place on Sunday.

The champions played the long game, making sure they stayed ahead of Boatflater.com , which could have snuck up on them.

“I don’t know that we could have caught Brit,” Miklos said. “By lap six, the course got rougher and we were concerned with where the Kildahls were.”

john racing powerboat

More action from the Mod V Class.

Considering how dominant LSB Rev-X/Speed Marine was while it was on the course, fans would be surprised to learn that it was the first time the driver and throttleman had teamed up.

“What Jay Whotlman did for me this weekend was beyond amazing,” Lilly said. “I’ve been blessed with great throttlemen my whole life. When I stopped racing with my dad, I assumed I would start throttling, but I’ve had so many great throttlemen.”

Steve Kildahl said his team cracked a blade on its preferred propeller and had to run a backup wheel. Echoing fellow veteran Unnerstall’s comments, the elder Kildahl, said, “The whole event was good, but the starts weren’t stellar by any means.”

Bracketology By The Numbers In the final race of the week, the bracket class boats took to the course with the boats in Bracket 200 and 500 starting first followed by the entries in 400 and 700 classes.

In Bracket 200, the 39-foot Phantom, Justice League, with driver Cory Shantry and throttleman Richard Davis, took the early lead, followed by Keith and Cade Herbott in the 38-foot Fountain, Herbott Racing, and the 39-foot Phantom, OC Racing , with Joey Olivieri and throttleman Tom Madalena. Fans might have been surprised to see the 41-foot Apache, Predator , running fifth, but throttleman Nate Hunt, owner/driver Dean Stahlman and navigator Connie Hunt knew where they needed to be overall to win the title, taking more of an old-school approach.

john racing powerboat

Jim Simmons and throttleman Jason Zolecki earned a Bracket 400-class in Simmons Marine.

When the spray settled, OC Racing took the checkered flag, while the 44-foot MTI, Batman Racing with owner/driver Elliot Toth and throttleman Jax Muller, took second and Predator was third. That was enough for Predator/Stahlman Motorsports to defend its world championship in the class followed by Justice League and OC Racing .

In Bracket 400, owner/driver Jim Simmons and throttleman Jason Zolecki, just keep winning races and titles. Damon Marotta and owner/driver Mark Robbins had a good start in their 34-foot Phantom, Control Freak, leading the way for the first five laps of the eight-lap race; but to win in offshore, a team needs to complete all the laps. Control Freak had to pull out with an issue on the fifth lap, handing the lead and the championship to the Simmons Marine team. Owner/throttleman Chad Woody and driver Billy Shipley in the 29-foot Lavey Craft, Team Woody , finished second on the day followed by Jake Nicks and Mark Fernandez in the 30-foot Phantom, Allied Offshore .

john racing powerboat

More Bracket-class action from yesterday’s final race.

Simmons Marine won the championship followed by Control Freak and drive Shaun Wall and throttleman Clyde Petty in the 32-foot Phantom, Buttraxx.com .

In Bracket 500, the team of owner/driver J.J. Turk and throttleman Michael Stancombe had what appeared to be a flag-to-flag win in their 30-foot Phantom, XINSURANCE/Golf-N-Gator , but officials penalized the team for missing a buoy. That put the 28-foot Manta, Sweat Equity Motorsports , with owner/driver Greg DiRenzo, driver Jeremy Bisson and navigator Angie Pierce on top of the world championship standings, followed by XINSURANCE /Golf-N-Gator . Third went to the national champions in the class, throttleman Elijah Kingery and driver Eric Ullom, in the 29-foot Warlock, Bulletproof. The 30-foot Phantom, Bronx Phantom/Marker 1 Marine with Vincent and Rob Winoski ran well through the week but hadn’t qualified to contend for championship points.

Arguably, the wildest ride of the day was experienced by the competitors in Bracket 700 class. The 21- and 22-foot boats powered by 300-hp outboards waged a torrid battle in the emerald waters off Key West. The winner for the day was the 22-foot Activator, Statement Marine Bad Decisions with Nick Buis driving and Owen Buis throttling. They were chased closely by Cameron Turk and Robert Bryant in the 22-foot Nitra, XINSURANCE / Golf-N-Gator and by Rick Raab and Scott Jobin in the 21-foot Superboat, Statement Marine Safe Cash and the second Statement Marine Bad Decisions boat, the 22-foot Velocity piloted by Dalton Palestra and Jerry Hartman.

When the six-lap thrashing concluded, the Buis family took the checkered flag followed by Matthew Beil and Ricardo Maldonado in the 23-foot H-Craft, a boat built in the United Arab Emirates while XINSURANCE/Golf-N-Gator crossed in third.

Their third-place finish was enough to secure the world championship for Bryant and 16-year-old Cameron Turk, who also claimed the national championship in the class. That could be enough to earn them a spot in the American Powerboat Association’s Hall of Champions for 2023. Statement Marine Safe Cash took second in the championship followed by the Buis family. Looking back on his rookie year, Cameron Turk said, “Never, ever would I have thought I’d be lucky enough to pull off one win. Then we got a podium in our first race and never looked back.”

It sounds like they imposed their will on the sport.

KAAMA MARINE

Founded in 1976, the KAAMA Racing Team is widely regarded as one of the most successful offshore powerboat racing teams in history.

Having started in well over 70 races, KAAMA earned its respect not only on the racecourse, but also through its forward-thinking engineering solutions, which undoubtedly helped advance the performance boat industry.

KAAMAFinishline.jpg

The KAAMA Racing Team consisted of Betty Cook as driver, John Connor as crew chief & throttleman, various navigators as well as engineering partner Peter Weismann.

The team ran 4 different boat hulls, a 36’ Cigarette, a 38’ Scarab, a 38’ Cougar catamaran and a 38’ Formula catamaran, all set-up and modified by John Connor.

36' CIGARETTE

Kaama Cigarette 36

The 36-foot Cigarette was like many boat designs that followed, the origin of countless offshore victories.

Famous for winning the legendary Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore race, the boats design quickly became noted on the racecourse and in the news.

KAAMA Racing consequently set up an engineering workshop in its parent company KUDU AEROSEACRAFT INC. and started developing their own drivetrain and power systems.

Kaama Scarab 38

The 38-foot Scarab is by far one of the most recognised hull designs in the world and respected because of its light weight and high speeds.

Initially engineered by John Connor as replacement for the Cigarette hull, the first Scarab hull was built by Larry Smith for KAAMA Racing.

Once licensed to Wellcraft the design set out to become an absolute powerboat best-seller  and gained further notoriety through its appearance in the TV series "Miami Vice".

KAAAMACougar.png

The 38-foot Cougar catamaran was equipped with twin 482 Mercruiser putting out more than 700 hp each. These engines were modified by KAAMA Marine Engineering Inc., the racing teams own development and production company for engines and propulsion systems.

The catamaran was capable of speeds exceeding 100mph in ideal water conditions, thus secured the team their second World Championship in Venice, Italy in 1979.

38' FORMULA

KAAMA Formula 38

In the 1980‘s KAAMA Racing Team accepted sponsorship from Michelob Light for a number of races and introduced a new 38-foot Formula Hull.

the team ran several races as well as multiple Top-Speed runs with this particular hull. The innovative Kevlar 49 structure became test-bench for KAAMA surface drive applications.

Formula later offered "KAAMA Special Edition" upgrades for their performance line of recreational powerboats.

KAAMA MARINE ENGINEERING

KAAMAMarineEngineering.png

In addition to the famous racing team the company developed KAAMA performance engines and surface drive systems.

During his involvement with KAAMA Racing, throttleman and crew chief John Connor and Peter Weismann co-developed the KAAMA surface drive. The company continued to release and sell their own products, as special performance upgrades for pleasure boats.

Next to the in-house developed KAAMA engines, Betty Cook and John Connor race-tested all their products in the open class and ran the drives on both their KAAMA scarab 38 and Formula catamaran. Their race boats were perfect test benches for speed assessment, efficiency and durability.

KAAMA MARINE for MERCRUISER

Merc3.png

The KAAMA Racing Team shares a long history with Mercruiser, having run their engines and drives in a majority of their races. The KAAMA boats were also test bench for many innovative technologies that, once proven on the racecourse became production standard.

From hull materials such as 49 Kevlar, to engine and propulsion systems by Mercruiser, KAAMA acted as exclusive development partner, always willing to put new technologies to the test.

The team regularly used Mercruiser’s “Lake X” facility for test runs and configurations assessments. Betty Cook and KAAMA were featured in several Mercruiser Advertisements.

KAAMA SPECIAL EDITIONS

The popular TV Series “Riptide” featured a Scarab powered by KAAMA Power Systems

The international success in the offshore arena paired with KAAMA MARINE's own product development lead to several product partnerships, extending the brands reach and introducing their race-proven developments to the consumer market.

Wellcraft licensed KAAMA's original 38' design (Scarab) from Larry Smith to manufacture several variants of the record-breaking hull. KAAMA MARINE upgrades became popular options to increase the boats performance, speed and efficiency. A combination of the 425 KAAMA engine and KAAMA surface drive, were popular upgrades for many Wellcraft owners. Consequently Wellcraft introduced a limited KAAMA Special Edition, which was fully equipped with KAAMA hardware, a choice of "competition type" engine variants and drives.

Formula stepped up thier partnership with KAAMA Racing Team by following Wellcraft and also introducing KAAMA Edition Formula boats. These boats were offered with exclusive paint jobs and the KAAMA surface drive system.

Up until today many Wellcraft and Formula models are still equipped with the KAAMA surface drive after having been run for more than 25 years.

Ultimately Chris-Craft engaged in a partnership with KAAMA Racing in order to set up a Mississippi River speed record. The catamaran was set up by KAAMA MARINE and powered by KAAMA POWER SYSTEMS engines and drives.

Powerboat P1 has today announced its P1 Offshore race calendar for the 2024 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin again and returning to favorite venues in Florida. The Sarasota and St. Petersburg grand prix events on Florida’s Gulf Coast move away from their traditional dates around the Independence Day and Labor Day vacations respectively and will provide an exhilarating climax to the season in September and October.

Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast will again host the season opener in mid-May with a weekend of ‘fast boats and cold drinks.’ Thunder On Cocoa Beach will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of staging this event and its Executive Director, Kerry Bartlett will be unveiling special plans to mark this milestone.

In August, racing will return to Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a second year. Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported that last season’s inaugural Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge delivered an economic impact of $4.7 million with more than 40,000 attending the three-day festival, and this year’s event in August will be open to all offshore classes. Mayor Ryan Sorenson said: “I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our City’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.” City Administrator Casey Bradley added: “This event not only brings a surge of energy to our City but also underscores our commitment to hosting world class events. We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

Another event milestone will be celebrated in September with the 40th anniversary of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, making it the second longest-running powerboat festival in the United States. For decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious event that brings significant value to the county. Local media reports that it generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and P1’s national and international television deals showcase the city’s many attractions to an audience of more than 200 million homes. Pete Harvey, Director of Sports at Visit Sarasota County commented: “The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 Class 1 boats by 2025. We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners. Azam Rangoonwala Powerboat P1, CEO

The season finale will see the race teams head along the Gulf Coast to St. Petersburg for the Monster Energy St. Pete Grand Prix. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly become a favorite venue will the racers and it will see the APBA national champions crowned in October. “We’re excited to see one of America’s best waterfront locations selected to host the Powerboat P1 grand prix event,” commented Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/CEO Brian Lowack. “We love the opportunity to show off the spectacular downtown St. Pete waterfront and award-winning St. Pete Pier as spectators come from near and far to our beautiful destination or tune in on TV around the globe to see some of the most exciting action on water.”

Dave Gowland of Monster Energy said: “We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship.”

Seven teams are expected to compete in this season’s UIM Class 1 World Championship and races will be staged at the P1 Offshore events. Powerboat P1’s aim is to attract more teams and build the worldwide television audience to return Class 1 to the summit of the sport. “Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.”

“The 2023 offshore season was one of great change and growth” explains Rangoonwala. “This season we will seek further growth by focusing on attracting more competitors, particularly young racers, improving the fan experience, continuing to build our social media audience and broadening the international reach of our TV broadcast deals. Having celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, Powerboat P1 is embarking on its third decade as a promoter and we will continue to design our race events to encourage tourism and enhance the profile of the host venues. Partnerships are at the heart of our business and over the coming months we will be announcing new agreements as well as the renewal of existing sponsorships.”

Luxury & Performance since 1996

Our history.

Mystic Powerboats was founded in 1996 by John Cosker. The company was started in Melbourne, Florida but eventually moved to Port Orange, Florida because of its proximity to Daytona Beach. Daytona’s inlet to the ocean allowed easier real-world testing for new boats.

about us 1996

Construction begins on the SL700, Mystic’s largest build at 70’x16′. This custom boat was commissioned by and engineered for a customer who liked speed as much as they liked luxury. Powered by twin Caterpillar 1800 HP diesel engines, the SL700 was capable of speeds of over 80mph.

After nearly a decade, Mystic outgrew its Port Orange facility and decided to move on to a larger space in DeLand, FL. By 2007 there were 5 boats, all 50 feet or larger, under construction and business was booming. This move helped catapult the Mystic Powerboats brand to the next level.

about us 2005

The Mystic brand became red hot when Dave Scott, owner of the Bud Select race team, commissioned the second C5000 ever to be built. Dave is influential in the racing world and once he had a Mystic boat everyone wanted one.

Mystic produced its first 50 foot, six-person boat in 2011. This single build helped the brand transition from strictly racing into the pleasure boat market and significantly opened up its customer base.

about us 2011

People took notice when Bill Tomlinson purchased a Mystic boat and laid down a 223 mph pass at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. Then, one year later, Sheik Hassan shattered that record with a 244 mph pass. These two boats cemented Mystic as the builders of the fastest off-shore catamarans on earth.

In 2015, production of the M4200 and C4400 o shore catamaran began. The M4200 became Mystic’s first performance center console with a V Hull and outboard-power, and the C4400 was built in response to requests for a smaller and more manageable version of the C5000.

about us 2015

With Mystic founder John Cosker at the throttle, American Ethanol, a 51-foot Mystic catamaran, wins The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout as it has nearly every year since 2002. Topping out at over 200mph, this race reinforces the Mystic racing legacy.

Pulling influence from Mystic’s flagship model and responding to customer demand, the M3800 was born and added to the lineup. The M3800 is a perfect blend of size, speed, and luxury and great for those that like to tow easier and stay dryer while entertaining guests for the day.

about us 2018

Purchasing the warehouse next door allowed Mystic to expand its footprint and create a stunning showroom and design center. Customers can visit to say hello or plan their next Mystic with one-to-one consultations and more comfort than ever before.

The company purchased an additional 25,000 square foot building adjacent to the existing buildings bringing the Mystic manufacturing plant to nearly 100,000 square feet on nearly 10 acres of property.

Also in 2021, the first full carbon fiber laminated C4000 was built. The combination of weight and power really takes the performance of this cat to another level.

MST C4000 2021 about us

Mystic has unveiled the next generation C4000 Outboard Catamaran. This C4000 is fully redesigned with a new restyled deck with a lower profile, larger cockpit, and more storage for a full day on the water! It is also fully equipped with a chemically strengthened laminated glass windshield for better optics and scratch resistance. Mystic has retained the great walk out rear cockpit arrangement for easy water access during your day on the water. The manufacturer is increasing production on this re-engineered model to reduce backlog. This C4000 Gen 2 model is known for its great rough water capabilities with a comfortable ride no matter what seas mother nature throws at you.

loto 2023 tom leigh 8014

“We have built our company throughout the years on a foundation of speed, technology, and luxury. It is with this dedication that every day we pursue building our heritage one boat at a time.”

Powerboat racing returns to Brevard County in Thunder on Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Powerboats sped along the Brevard County coast on Saturday, some pushing speeds of 200 miles per hour. The Thunder on Cocoa Beach fans said it was a heck of a show.

"It's pretty amazing!" said racing fan Amanda Campbell.

Sixty-seven teams are participating in this weekend's event. Powerboat races will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and again on Sunday. Kerry Bartlett founded the race 15 years ago. He said a 2021 study showed it had a $15 million economic impact on Brevard County.

"It's a community event – me and my four directors have full-time jobs. We do it for the love of the community and for the love of racing," he said.

The race started and ended at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, which was set aside for ticketed guests. There were plenty of places to see the action; the seven-mile course stretched from State Road 520 to Minuteman Avenue. Kevin Pruett, a race director, said he expected plenty of fans to show up to watch.

"We'll probably be close to a hundred thousand, maybe a tad over. If this weather holds up, we'll be over a hundred thousand."

With feels-like temps close to 110 degrees, organizers have set up tents and misting stations for fans. There was also lots of water on hand. It was also wise to bring something to give some shade and wear sunblock.

"We've got lots of water, we've got our sunscreen, and we're ready for the day," said racing fan Melissa Degel.

Organizers also hope to raise around $20,000 for the group I Am a Freedom Fighter, a local nonprofit aiming to stop human trafficking.

Innovative Power, Proven Performance!

The art of running an engine shop, winning championships on land and sea and securing exclusive partnerships

KaaseEngineBuild

But if the builder can couple these attributes with an extra energy, you will benefit by having these vital qualities serving you. What counts is real motive power—a source not just confined to the engine but also one that penetrates the thinking of team that prepares the engines.

Early promise on a journey of 40 years

When Jon Kaase began his career as a professional engine builder in early 1977, he was propelled to prominence by season end. Working with Dyno Don Nicholson, they had triumphed by securing the NHRA Pro Stock Championship. Under the subsequent banner, Jon Kaase Racing, the firm achieved a further 12 Mountain Motor Pro Stock Championships between the years of 1995 to 2006.

During the first decade of this century, the firm added hot rod engines to their menu, represented by a much-respected big-block: their flagship the Boss Nine. Topped by evocative Boss-style valve covers, Boss Nines beguile with a long list of custom options. In hot rod engine discussions, this engine series has become one of the best-loved in the history of the breed combining a virtual Buddha of torque with exquisite hot rod looks.

Kasse-EMC-new

Kaase initiates exclusive agreements, mobilizes the production of offshore racing power units, engages in assembly of high-performance Nissan GT-R engines and extends commitments to industrial equipment manufacturers.

MissGeico

These are aimed at premium companies requiring high-quality engines, including the 8-time world champion Miss Geico offshore racing team, who makes their engine packages available through Supercat Rigging. Offshore powerboat racing is a type of competition for ocean-going powerboats, typically point-to-point racing.

Shortly after the power sports commitment, Atlanta-based Top Speed Motorsports engaged Kaase in a similar exclusive relationship, involving the assembly of their high-performance Nissan GT-R engines.

Likely, this helps explain why successful agreements are built on 40 years of trust.

FORMULA 1 POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER FOR RED RIVER RUMBLE F1 POWERBOAT SHOWDOWN

Shreveport-Bossier, LA – The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission is thrilled to announce the return of Formula 1 Powerboat Racing to Shreveport-Bossier with the Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown, scheduled to take place from May 24 – 26, 2024, over Memorial Day weekend. This event will feature approximately 50 high-speed powerboats along the Red River.

“On behalf of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, we are very excited to bring Formula 1 powerboat racing back to Shreveport-Bossier for the first time since 2018,” says Tim Seebold, Managing Director of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship. “Shreveport holds a special place in my heart as it was the site of my last National Championship before retiring from driving.”

The Formula 1 Powerboat Championship is an 8-race series contested across North America. US Powerboat racing has a 120-year heritage that began with the formation of the American Powerboat Association. For the last six decades, F1 powerboats have been recognized as one of the world’s most spectacular racing vehicles. This Powerboat event provides a prime opportunity for Shreveport-Bossier to highlight its expertise in hosting water-based sporting events, drawing more visitors to our vibrant city.

“We are looking forward to bringing Powerboats back to the Red River and Shreveport-Bossier in 2024-2026,” says Sara Nelms, Director of Sports for the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission. “We are excited to host this event in conjunction with Mudbug Madness and showcase the world class Formula 1 drivers! Thank you to the Red River Waterway Commission and Margaritaville Resort Casino that have already come on as sponsors for the event.”

The Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown will happen the same weekend as Mudbug Madness 2024 in Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport. This F1 Powerboat event will present viewers with heart pounding, up close and personal, racing action in downtown Shreveport, and will enhance the Mudbug Madness experience for festival goers. General admission viewing is also free to the public and there will also be a VIP area at the Shreveport Aquarium and tickets will go on sale at a later date.

“On behalf of the Mudbug Madness Festival, we are excited that Formula 1 Powerboat Racing will be taking place the same weekend as our festival on the Shreveport Riverfront,’ says Terri Matthews, Event Coordinator for Mudbug Madness. “Our mission is to support and promote projects and events to enhance downtown and the synergy this will bring will do just that.”

The competition begins with 20 boat fields lined up awaiting the start. At the drop of the flag, the drivers ignite their engines and accelerate towards the first turn. This spectator-friendly event provides non-stop racing action due to the tight courses which are made up of right and left-hand turns. No two laps are the same due to the changing wind and water conditions, making the F1 boat one of the most challenging racing machines to conquer.

“The Commission is excited to announce its participation in the F1 Powerboat Championship Series in 2024! Our primary objective is to promote the economic and recreational development of the Waterway,” says Dustin Hayes, Marketing Director for the Red River Waterway Commission. “Events like this, held in conjunction with Mudbug Madness, help raise awareness and showcase the recreational opportunities available along the Waterway. We highly value our ongoing partnership with the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission and eagerly anticipate future collaborations as we serve the people of Caddo-Bossier and the surrounding areas encompassing the Red River Waterway District.”

In addition to the riveting races, the event will feature a family-friendly atmosphere, complete with an open pit area that allows fans to meet the drivers and get a close look at the machines they drive. This opportunity to connect with the sport and its athletes adds an extra layer of excitement for attendees of all ages.

“We’re excited to be the exclusive casino sponsor for the Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown in 2024,” says Dan Ihm, General Manager and Senior Vice President for Margaritaville Bossier City. “This sponsorship reflects our commitment to boosting community engagement and economic growth, while bringing the pulse-pounding excitement of high-speed boat racing to Shreveport-Bossier. Get ready for a weekend of Margaritaville-style thrills!”

The Red River Rumble F1 Powerboat Showdown promises to be an exhilarating blend of high-speed competition and family-friendly entertainment. Boating enthusiasts and community members are invited to join for a memorable weekend of powerboat racing along the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier.

John Travolta to Star as Don Aronow

John Travolta will star as legendary offshore powerboat racer and manufacturer Don Aronow in the upcoming movie Speed Kills . The biopic will chronicle Aronow’s fascinating life in powerboat racing and manufacturing. Aronow founded such companies as Donzi, Cigarette Racing and Formula, among others.

Regarding his upcoming role, Travolta was quoted as saying, “I like biopic films. They are fascinating to me, and real-life characters are always interesting to play. … This is a great story.”

The film will be directed by John Luessenhop, whose credits include Texas Chainsaw 3-D and Takers. “Once I started learning about Don Aronow’s life, I jumped at the opportunity to bring this story to the big screen,” the director said. “John Travolta is the perfect actor to bring Aronow’s story to life.” Paul Castro, a writer with close personal ties to the Aronow family, is consulting on the script.

Travolta is no stranger to movies that feature performance boats. In the film Face/Off , he and Nicholas Cage had a great chase scene in a pair of Wellcraft Scarab 23 SCS boats.

Powerboat archive

This web site has been created to maintain the history of modern day powerboat racing using various material from my archives. I began an interest in the sport when embarking on a career in Naval Architecture at Vosper Ltd which at the time was building the 1962 Cowes - Torquay winner Tramontana One. Having an interest in photography as well as keeping countless reports and result sheets has with the demise of the National Motorboat Museum, has given greater urgency to have an easy accessible means of referencing the Raceboat history of the last 50 years. There are many moments which stand out over the last 50 years, such as 'Telstar' winning the Cowes - Torquay - Torquay in 1968, or the extremely rough Cowes - Torquay - Torquay of 1971, so hopefully this web site will recall many more memorable occasions for those who visit the site. Powerboat Archive is continuing to add photographs, films and race information and thanks must go to John Walker and Ray Bulman for allowing the use of their extensive collections. If you have any material you wish to contribute please contact me, there is still a lot missing from our racing past.
