Introducing The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

One of watchmaking's most charming complications returns to frederique constant..

frederique constant yacht timer

In 1997, Frederique Constant introduced a regatta timer for the first time (and until now, the only time) in its collections. The regatta timer may be one of the most specific, if not the most specific, of all complications. A regatta timer is used to count down the amount of time remaining before the competing yachts are allowed to cross the start line during a yacht race; the start line is defined by an imaginary line drawn between two buoys. Sailboats cannot, unlike race cars, simply wait at a starting line, as they are constantly in motion thanks to the wind. Instead, racing yachts maneuver behind the start line, seeking to correctly anticipate the moment that the starting signal is given (traditionally a gun or cannon shot) at which point they can legally cross the line without incurring a penalty for starting too early.

frederique constant yacht timer

This situation means that one of the most exciting parts of a regatta, are the moments during which the clock is counting down from the warning gun to the actual starting gun, when the yachts are maneuvering for the most advantageous possible position. The warning gun is often fired, by custom, five minutes before the starting gun so when skippers hear it go off, they know they have that amount of time before the line can be crossed. The regatta timer is set up to allow instant and intuitive read-off of the amount of time remaining before the start. Each circle represents one minute, and as the colors change in each circle in succession, skippers can easily see how much time remains, without resorting to the often difficult-to-read sub-registers of a traditional chronograph.

frederique constant yacht timer

It is a complication whose utility outside the context of a regatta I have always struggled to envision (counting down a five minute egg?) but its very specialized purpose combined with its idiosyncratic design, give regatta timers a unique appeal among complicated watches. There will be three versions of the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown launched in the US market, which will be a gold PVD model with a blue dial, a steel model with grey dial, and a two-tone model on a two-tone bracelet, with a guilloché pattern.

The regatta timer is both an easy complication to dismiss, but it's also an easy complication to like, if you give it a chance. On the one hand, if you're not a yacht skipper or a regatta official, there is probably not a whole lot of use you're going to get out it. On the other hand, it is so charming and so visually punchy, and so very much a product of a time when watches were practical necessities, and made to fit every need and budget, that you can't help but fall in love with it a little bit. I have never had the pleasure of owning a regatta timer but I have had a chance to spend some time with several different models, including a vintage Heuer Regatta, and there is something irresistibly watchable about seeing those little circles change color as the minutes count down.

Whether you ever get a chance to use these for their intended purpose, they're great looking watches with a real connection to both horological history, and to Frederique Constant's own history as well. They're also very attractively priced, considering that you're getting an interesting take on an unusual complication – the most expensive (and I think most handsome) version, in rose gold plate, is $3495 ($3195 for the steel model).

Introducing the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Collection

Frederique Constant’s latest releases continue what has become a bit of a tradition for the brand: introducing serious complications into value-driven watches with classic aesthetics that recall the finest Swiss manufactures. They have notably released a truly impressive perpetual calendar , a world timer, and even a tourbillon with eye popping retail prices in styles that make them hard to ignore. Their new Yacht Timer collection — built around the Regatta Countdown and Yacht Timer GMT — includes two new complicated watches with a clear and appealing aesthetic. Let’s take a closer look.

On the Regatta Countdown from Frederique Constant, each passing minute fills one of five circles in the top half of the dial, first from white to blue, and then from blue to orange. If you’re part of a crew on a racing yacht, you can glance at your wrist while you’re raising or lowering your sails to hold or advance your position and have a pretty good idea of exactly how much time is left before the race officially begins. While this is certainly a niche complication, you don’t need to be a regatta participant to take advantage of a timer like this. Anything that takes 10 minutes or less, or that you want to take 10 minutes or less, can be timed with this complication.

frederique constant yacht timer

The other half of the Yacht Timer collection is the new Yacht Timer GMT, which in this iteration is an elegant take on one of the sportiest complications. If the Regatta Countdown calls to mind the excitement and fast action of a sailboat race, the Yacht Timer GMT makes one think of a long distance voyage where tracking multiple time zones might be a necessity. Of course, and this goes without saying, a yacht is not required here either. But Frederique Constant is tapping into an idea of an aesthetic with this small collection, giving their customers a hint of luxury in a package that’s actually quite practical.

frederique constant yacht timer

A close examination of the press images provided reveals a few interesting characteristics of these watches beyond the notable complications. First, the dials are incredibly intricate and contribute a great deal to making us believe that we’re looking at the slightly elevated instruments Frederique Constant is selling. The hobnail finish on each of these watches is engrossing and really well done. Secondly, the use of color is fantastic. The shifting circular timing indicators on the Regatta Countdown provide a ton of visual interest and give the watch a touch of casual flair. On the Yacht Timer GMT, particularly the two-tone variant on a bracelet, the red tipped GMT hand, charcoal dial, and rose gold finish all around work really well together.

The Yacht Timer GMT and the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown are both available now on Frederique Constant’s website in a variety of configurations, mixing dial colors, straps, bracelets, and finishes. Frederique Constant

  • Introduction

On The Wrist

Concluding thoughts, frederique constant.

I’ve been a pretty vocal advocate for micro-brand watches, and for good reason. I’ve found that many micro-brands are able to deliver excellent quality products, and for great prices . This isn’t typically a knock on more established luxury watch brands, but given the nature of the industry, smaller teams operating with direct to consumer sales models are able to better optimize their final retail prices. But if micro-brands start to drive up their prices, then there should be no reason to avoid larger brands like Hamilton , Frederique Constant , Certina , Tissot , Alpina , etc. These brands have been around for a while, and some of their watches are pretty impressive.

Since Baltic and Lorier decided to venture close to the $1000 category, with mostly typical GMT watch designs and specs, I decided I would take a look at some of the other options available in this category. The Baltic and Lorier were very well received, but there are other GMT watches out there at similar prices. The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer GMT is one such watch; although following a very different design aesthetic . This particular watch has a retail price of around $2000, but can be found close to the $1000 mark.

Let’s check it out!

The case measures 41.75mm in diameter, 50mm from lug-to-lug and 12.5mm in height. The case is bi-color, and combines a stainless steel base material with PVD coated rose gold elements. PVD coating isn’t the greatest as it will eventually succumb to scratches and wear, but it’s cheaper than real rose gold and looks pretty great.

The polished case is very sleek, with curved sides that elegantly extend into a pair of lugs that have brushed top surfaces and polished bevels. The lug width is 21mm , which is a bit unfortunate as it makes finding after-market straps a bit challenging.

There is a rose gold bezel layer that is slightly recessed into the case, which I love. The bezel seats a flat sapphire crystal with plenty of AR coating.

You then have a push-pull crown at the 3 o’clock position that is also rose gold, and signed with the brand’s logo on top. The crown is easy to grip, and has no crown or stem wobble.

Flipping it over, you have a screw-down case-back with an exhibition window that shows you a pretty neatly decorated movement. This watch is rated for up-to 100m of water resistance.

The dial here is stunning, with a gray textured base, rose gold elements and a few subtle accents of color.

There is an outer minute track that has a gray base with white minute ticks and lumed circular pips for hour markers.

Moving inwards, you have a textured ring that contains the rose gold applied indices that are also filled with lume. The finishing on the indices is good, but I noticed some minor micro scratches, not uncommon to watches in the sub- $1500 category.

You then have a GMT 24-hour ring, with a background matched gray section for the night-time hours, and a lighter grey section for the daytime hours. A great choice of colors and a neat design here, with good printing quality.

The inner circular textured section has raised plates for the brand’s logo at the top as well as some text at the bottom. I typically prefer the text to be printed onto the textured surface directly, but I think in this case I like this better. Once again, excellent quality of printing, and the overall dial is clean without dust or dirt.

There is a date window at the 3 o’clock position that is cut into the dial surface without a frame. I’ve never seen this before, and I think it is really cool – there is a cyclops date magnifier that is inserted into the date window. A brilliant idea in my opinion, and one that is executed well, with great finishing around the window.

Moving onto the hands – I was impressed to find that the hour and minute hands are lumed, even though they have a very dressy design. These rose gold hands are reasonably well finished, and I think the proportions are excellent.

The GMT hand is painted black with a red arrow head tip that is filled with lume. I love this dash of color, and I think it is also finished very well.

My only criticism with respect to finishing is the seconds hand. I noticed a few micro patches of color discoloration. You can’t see this with the naked eye, but they are visible under a macro lens or loupe.

Overall, seconds hand aside, this dial is excellent, and I love the overall choice of colors and dial layout. The cyclops inside the date window has also slightly blown my mind.

I don’t expect watches like this to have any lume, and definitely not good lume. I was surprised by how elaborate the lume design is, with lumed hour pips, lumed indices, and lumed hour and minute hands.

The GMT hand is also lumed. All the lumed elements appear to be using C3 Super LumiNova .

They are reasonably bright , and hold their charge well for a dressy sports watch. No complaints from me here.

I did you all a bit of a disservice here, and didn’t actually unwrap the bracelet. Since I plan on selling this watch after my review, I didn’t want to risk adding too much wear to it.

I can, however, comment on the end link fitment, which is excellent. And the bracelet feels pretty solid with a decent amount of weight to it. It’s got a butterfly style clasp, with half links included. For a dressy watch like this, I don’t mind a butterfly clasp system.

This watch is said to use an FC-350 movement, which is typically an ETA 2824 or Sellita SW200 base movement with an in-house GMT module built on top of it.

It has a beautiful rose gold colored rotor that is engraved with the brand’s name.

It appears to be reasonably clean too, indicating decent quality control protocol.

On my time-grapher , I was seeing about +9 spd in the dial-up position. So not the best regulation in the world, but still good accuracy within acceptable bounds for an ETA 2824 or Sellita SW200 .

I typically avoid 42mm diameter watches for my 6.25″ wrists. I measured this one to be around 41.75mm in diameter, 50mm from lug to lug and roughly 12.5mm in height.

I think I’d be willing to wear this watch because of how sleek the case feels on the wrist, mostly because of the super flat case-back and the curved lugs . It is actually very comfortable, and doesn’t feel as large as you might think.

I only spent time with the included rubber strap, and the watch was very comfortable on the wrist. The quality of the strap is good too, with matching rose gold hardware that is signed.

Overall, I think the roughly $2000 retail price is a bit steep for this watch. But as with many of these old school luxury Swiss watch brands, their retail prices mean very little, and you can often find them at pretty significant discounts. So in the $1000 range, this is a good GMT watch option for someone looking for a well designed and well constructe d watch, with mostly good finishing . I think the hands leave room for improved finishing, but the rest of this watch is spot on.

$1000 is still a lot of money, but with brands like Lorier and Baltic playing close to this price target, I think a significant part of the affordable micro-brand appeal wears off for me, and makes room for more established brands like Hamilton , Frederique Constant , Alpina , etc. to get back in the game. Don’t be afraid to check these out, they’re good watches.

Thanks for reading!

Yacht Timer GMT

One of the most legendary complications in watchmaking is making a comeback in the sporty chic collection by Frederique Constant. The manufacture is unveiling the Yacht Timer GMT today, a new model with two versions that are unmistakably nautical in nature.  The GMT gets a new lease on life The GMT function can display a second time zone. It's a crucial feature for any world traveler. The GMT had previously only been offered in the Classics collection, designed for professionals on the go who wanted to see the local time and the time at home base when changing planes or continents. Today, the GMT joins the Yacht Timer collection. By adding two new models to this sleek nautical line, Frederique Constant enters the world of long-distance yachtsmen, lovers of sailing and the beach, or anyone attracted to nautical design.

frederique constant yacht timer

Simple and intuitive Both timepieces feature the same tasteful sporty chic style with a modern 42mm diameter, clean lines and rose gold finish. The GMT on the functional and highly legible Yacht Timer is displayed on a central hand. The time at the home base can be instantly read on the inner ring marked with a 24-hour clock. This intuitive GMT has a red tip so it can easily be distinguished from the other hands. There is no need for a day-night indicator since the dark half of the GMT's ring marks night from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM and the light side indicates day for the other 12 hours. There is a window at 3 o’clock showing the date paired with the local time on the central hands. Two variations of one complication There are already two models to choose from. One features a rose gold-plated case, indexes and hands on a white grained dial. All the hands are coated with Super-LumiNova to ensure they are clearly visible, even at night. The FC-350 movement provides a 38-hour power reserve. The Yacht Timer GMT is no match for saltwater spray and is waterproof to 100 meters. This version comes with a brown alligator strap. The strap on the other variation is in bicolor steel and rose gold-plated steel. It has the same glowing hands, also finished in rose gold, that hover over a dial with a grained anthracite background. Both models also come with an extra rubber strap to make the Yacht Timer GMT watches equally suitable for the most extreme physical activities. Heirs to a manufacture legacy With the Yacht Timer GMT, Frederique Constant has topped up its Classics line with a sleek nautical collection that ensures continuity for the manufacture's cherished Swiss Made elegance. What is more, the watchmaker had offered up its own version of the GMT, a prestigious complication for which in 2011 it created an in-house version: the seventh manufacture CALIBRE called the FC-938. The Yacht Timer GMT carries on this pursuit and marks another milestone in this modern-day complication's history — a call to the open sea, and an urge to travel and seek new horizons.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

In 1997, Frederique Constant introduced its first regatta watch, which was part of its Yacht Master collection. This timepiece has a feature that counts down the time before a regatta begins. Now, Frederique Constant is bringing back this rare nautical complication for avid sailing enthusiasts.

Twenty-two years later in 2019, the Regatta makes its celebrated comeback. This one is part of the collection renamed Yacht Timer. The name could not be more fitting since the Regatta has a built-in timer that counts down the critical 10 minutes before the sailing vessels set off for the race.

frederique constant yacht timer

Regatta racers can use the countdown to find the best position for dashing out front based on the wind and the other vessels — and without ever having to go over the imaginary starting line. This is a tactical and crucial maneuver demanding a precision instrument that can be read at a glance since they have to keep raising and lowering the sails to hold position as close to this line as possible.

Frederique Constant has not designed a “nautically-inspired” timepiece, but rather a genuine regatta watch that is operational in race conditions. The perfectly readable original display from 1997 was left unchanged. It features five dots at the top of the dial. Each dot represents one minute. The top button activates the first countdown that slowly turns all the points from white to blue, the contrasting color of the dial. Five minutes has passed when all five points are colored.

frederique constant yacht timer

Then the second countdown starts to mark the last five minutes before the race begins. This time all five points gradually turn orange. When the final and fifth point is orange and the second hand strikes noon, the regatta is on.

Everything on the Yacht Timer Regatta is designed for legibility. Since the only complication on the timepiece that should be the center of attention is the countdown timer, the engraved dial captures every reflection of light. The indexes are faceted to constantly display a shiny polished side that can be seen regardless of the sun’s angle. The hands and indexes are filled with luminescent material for overcast days.

frederique constant yacht timer

The sails of this latest collection have already been filled with four models. Two are finished in rose gold with a navy blue or silver-plated dial on an alligator strap. The third one features a blend of steel and rose gold on a two-tone strap. The fourth model in the collection has a sleekly modern gray color scheme with a steel case and silver-plated dial on a black alligator strap. Frederique Constant also includes a more rugged black rubber strap with all the models that can weather the ocean spray.

Official description

One of the most legendary complications in watchmaking is making a comeback in the sporty chic collection by Frederique Constant. The manufacture is unveiling the Yacht Timer GMT today, a new model with two versions that are unmistakably nautical in nature.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches, frederique constant.

The Frederique Constant SA company is established in Geneva, Switzerland, in its current form in 1988 by the Dutch entrepreneur Peter Constant Stas and his wife Aletta Francoise Frédérique Stas-Bax. The brand is involved in all the stages of watch production, from initial design to final assembly. Their first collection was launched in 1992.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Olympic Committee changed the countdown system for starting yacht races. With an increase in the number of boat categories over the years, the time for successive starts had become too long. So it was decided to reduce the intervening time gap from 5 – 10 to 3 – 6 minutes. The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer   was the first watch to integrate these new racing rules.

Frederique Constant developed their new Yacht Timer quartz movement together with Herbert Derksen of Tack and Gybe International ( TNG ), the former helmsman of the Dutch Olympic team’s Tornado sailboat. It is fitted with a countdown function that can be set at 10, 6, 5 or 3 minutes, shown by the coloured balls as the earlier automatic regatta movements have. Besides the visible going of the countdown it is also audible. Both Frederique Constant and TNG have patented the new movement, you can download the patent here .

Moscow Metro Questions & Answers

frederique constant yacht timer

Would it be reasonably easy for first timer to take train/metro from SVO to a hotel near Kremlin?

frederique constant yacht timer

To the best of my knowledge, the the train service from SVO to Kremlin/Red Square is called Aeroexpress. The trains leave every 30-35 minutes with a transfer time of 5 minutes. It costs around $5-$7 per person. However, please note that this is not a part of Moscow metro. It is train facility. On the other hand, for a first timer it is best to take the hotel pick-up/drop off service unless the traveler is fluent Russian. Nonetheless, you may choose to take a look at Aeroexpress service.

Hope it helps. Happy tour!

frederique constant yacht timer

It is not difficult to take a train (Aeroexpress) from the airport (SVO) and then take the Metro to Kremlin. I and my husband did that about 2 weeks ago. That was our first time to Moscow. There are bus services from SVO to Metro stations too (much cheaper) but given the very congested traffic condition in Moscow, train service is much faster and more comfortable. There are signs in English (on the floor) in the airport that direct passengers to Aeroexpess train, accessible easily from Terminal E . Occassionally there were even announcements in English telling passengers that the train would leave in about 15 minutes. The lady at the ticket office spoke very limited English but we mentioned to communicate. She used a calculator to show the ticket price (500 rubles per person per trip). We bought 2 round trip tickets. You can get a copy of the train schedule at the ticket office. In general there is service every half an hour (except during 11:30 am to 12:30 p.m) and it takes about 35 mins to arrive at the Belorussky Rail Terminal, which is in the same building for the Belorusskaya Metro station (Green Line). We got out of the Train Terminal and walked to the other end of the building to enter the Metro station. We bought the Metro tickets at the Ticket Office (55 Rubles per trip - flat rate). If you like (which we did), you can buy one ticket for multiple trips. The announcements in the Metro train are in Russian and English and there is English on the Metro map inside the train. However, we did not see English signs on the Metro platform. The station names on the platform walls are in Russian. We recommend getting a metro map in both Russian and English so you can recognize the station names. We took the Green Line directly to the Teatralnaya station and then walked 15 mins to the Red Square. If you need to go to other metro stations, it is easy to make transfer as all Metro lines are identified by colours. To make sure you got on the right train travelling in the right direction, pay attention to the announcement. Someone told us that announcements in trains going to the city centre are made by a man and announcements in trains going out from the city centre are made by a woman. We found this tips useful.

frederique constant yacht timer

Well the maps are pretty straight forward but the at the station you need to choose the side you want to go on, depending on whether you are going up or down a line, and those are written only in Russian so you will need to be able to read those.

frederique constant yacht timer

No metro, i suggest taking Uber whit the app Uber. Very cheap and easy. whatever you do, dont take taxi from airport from the guys asking you when u arrive if u need taxi. when i got outside they asked if i needed taxi. i said yes. had to pay 9000rub for that taxi. when i was leaving my hotel to go to the airport, i used Uber. i had to pay 800rub. Allso Taxi app is must cheaper taxis than the ones that are parked outside the aiport

frederique constant yacht timer

Metro is easy to use and cheap, you can pay via a machine and the fair os the same price for one trip, so you need two tickets for a return. Beware pickpockets so keep rucksacks and bags on your front. You will need help to identify the stations so ask at the hotel, also the line required.

frederique constant yacht timer

No metro station directly at SVO but a bus could take you to the nearest metro station. You can find information online about this (Google SVO, metro) and plan route ahead of time.

frederique constant yacht timer

If you have big lugguage; i suggest you take UBER. This service is reasonably priced in Russia and efficient

After completed the trip, I've found it's extremely easy to take the public transportation to the Kremlin (or center of Moscow)

* after exiting passport control at SVO, just follow the sign "To Train terminal" to the Aeroexpress train station - about 1/4 mile walk

* on the way, I withdrew money at an ATM machine with very low fee

* there are a few train ticket machines at the terminal with English UI - costs about 450 rubles per ticket

* there is also a phone shop that sells SIM card for 500 rubles, 1G data and unlimited local calls. Enough for my 7 days stay.

* when the train reaches the end of the line, get off then walk around to the metro station nearby (people were really nice to show me the way). This is the Belorusskaya station.

* at the ticket window, the lady does speak English. She is so helpful. I got a 7 day all you can ride (metro and buses) pass for 800 rubles

* use google map to see the closest Metro station to your destination

* then use the Metro map to see which lines to get on

* I downloaded Yandex Metro app on my phone and it's quite helpful

Just a little research and a little familiar with mapping alphabets to Russian alphabets, you'll be good to go.

>> The young Russians are very helpful even when I asked in English. I did bought a translator app which helped a little

>> Google map is not up to par with directions but very helpful to map out the stations then use the Yandex app

>> They appreciated when I said "hello" and "thank you" in Russian (normal courtesy)

frederique constant yacht timer

I couldn't find the train, language barrier. Airport Cab companies are like vultures, waiting to pounce on their prey. I was Quoted 4000 RUB from the official airport desk, but got an UBER for 850 RUB.

Honestly, its not that easy. There are cab people waiting to rip you off the second you arrive. The Train - For goodness sake I couldn't find the damn train into Moscow but my advice is -- Get an UBER from the airport, and then sort your public transport out the following day. UBER from SVO to central Moscow cost me 850 RUB. Probably similar to the train and you would most likely have to change etc. On my first day, i felt safer just getting an UBER. I was quoted 4000 RUB at the airport for the same trip using the Airport cab company (they all wore "Official tags" around their necks) VAMPIRES.

frederique constant yacht timer

yes....very easy, just take your time. ...download a copy of the metro and get used to it before you go....if you read Cyrillic great, if not learn to recognise the picture of the words....don't rely on the metro card get signals as sometimes you have them sometime not.

Thank you all for great advise.

For those suggestions of using Uber app, is there free Wifi at SVO or will I need a SIM card?

And for regular taxi / uber taxi, how much should I only pay?

frederique constant yacht timer

I don't know...we were a group with a bus

frederique constant yacht timer

It could be easy if you plan it before. With google maps f.e.

And don't use bus, use "aeroexpress" train and metro.

If you see it's hard to clear plan this trip - use Uber.

frederique constant yacht timer

Not unless you can read Russian. We have travelled to Moscow several times as son lives there but getting around on your own if you don't speak Russian is difficult. We have travelled around the world but only had problems in Russia.

Best way is to get your hotel to organise a taxi for you as many at airport will rip you offf. Enjoy your trip.

frederique constant yacht timer

Dear Meomeo

It will be little difficult for 1st timer as there is signage in Russian language.

frederique constant yacht timer

There is no metro station at SVO. You can take a bus to the nearest metro but you would have to plan everything in advance. If you can speak Russain it will be easy for you however if not then please plan everything ahead of time.

frederique constant yacht timer

I do not believe there is a metro station directly at SVO. Therefore you would have to take a bus or taxi to the closest metro station. We mapped everything out before we took the metro so that we didn't have to worry about reading the Cyrillic, but we only road the metro within the city limits of Moscow. Wish I could be of more help.
