Brand: Heavenly Twins 26

Heavenly Twins Catamarans are well-known as a capable seaboats and have made some remarkable voyages, at least 3 circumnavigations have been completed. These popular cruising multi-hulls are equally happy sitting on a drying mooring or roaming oceans. She offers family-sized accommodation in twin, private, aft double cabins, a comfortable saloon and a practical galley. The aft cabins also provide a safe play area for children and the saloon has plenty of space and stowage. Heavenly Twins have a center cockpit offering excellent crew security, and have an easily-handled rig. She will suit shorthanded sailors and families alike.

Extended in 1989 to a 27 foot version with a ‘stoop through’ to a large aft cabin with a double bed.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the boat.

We’re two keen travelers who love nature. We didn’t want to live the conventional career-focused life, and we really craved spending time doing what we love, rather than working to pay for things we don’t really need. That drove us, in 2017 to quit our jobs and sail away on our first boat, a little Heavenly Twins 26 Catamaran called Kittiwake. We sailed Kittiwake from the UK to Italy over two years and then sold her to buy our second boat, a Tayana 37 called Skua.

Glacier Bay 2640 Renegade

Glacier Bay’s latest version of its popular 26-foot catamaran is a split console, walk-through design. This layout should prove versatile enough to suit everyone from hard-core tournament types to weekend family fishermen and cruisers. There’s something for everyone!

Consider the bow area; it has lots of room, and serves equally well as a casting platform or a sun lounge. A large, deep anchor locker at the bow holds all ground tackle, and the shallow tray aft of that is ideal for dock lines. Farther aft, in front of the twin consoles, you’ll find a large transverse fishbox to hold the day’s catch.

The stylish, swept-back, tempered-glass windshield opens in the middle for bow access, but provides great protection and visibility when closed. The seating around the bridgedeck consists of a lounge seat that wraps around aft. The aft portion of this seat on our test boat housed the optional 18-gallon live well.

The spacious head compartment is accessed through the portside console. Inside, you’ll find a true 12-volt marine head attached to a 15-gallon holding tank. Aft of the head is a huge, wide-open storage area.

Helm and Cockpit Amenities

Back on deck, the helm area boasts a clever use of space. The helm seat sits atop another insulated box that can be used for fish or dry storage, and there’s also an optional refrigerator that fits in here. The helm itself tilts aft for rigging and wiring access.

The 2640 has a very spacious cockpit that serious fishermen are sure to appreciate. There’s a rigging station at the aft end of the bridgedeck, complete with a fresh water sink and a large flat surface on which to rig baits. The molded unit contains plenty of shelves, too.

A diamond non-skid pattern is molded into the cockpit sole to provide sure footing, and there is lots of room for fighting fish. Four rod racks are located beneath each gunwale, and there are four Lee rod holders in the covering boards. At the transom bulkhead, corner boxes hold the boat’s batteries on one side, tackle drawers on the other. A walk-through area on the centerline lets you easily access the engine platform, and this space is just the right size to accommodate a 94-quart Igloo cooler.

We tested the boat off South Florida, courtesy of Len Renn¿ of Seven Seas Yacht Sales, Glacier Bay’s Ft. Lauderdale dealer. The test boat sported twin 130-hp Hondas, and the ride was exemplary. Glacier Bay has cat hulls down to a science, and we spent an hour running the boat hard into the short offshore chop. No matter what we did, we couldn’t make it pound, and we didn’t get wet. What more do you need? The big Hondas pushed us along at 25 mph at 4000 rpm, and hit 34.3 mph wide-open at 5600 rpm.

The 2640 exhibited Glacier Bay’s usual excellent level of fit and finish, and its solid construction will provide years of reliable service. Glacier Bay also piles on the standard equipment, including goodies like cockpit coaming pads, the head, a fresh water system, tilt helm with hydraulic steering, rod holders and a Bimini top. The cherry on top is that this is a good-looking boat. It appears that the days of bulky, boxy cats are over!

The Queen berth (1.6m) is accessible from both sides (no climbing over your partner) and forms a forward-facing couch for reading or watching the world go by, with storage space above and below the bed.

The galley counter top and attached storage unit create a generous work-area, and inwards to form a 2-man dinette. Centralized, it covers the sink and gas 2-burner cooker.

Both the WC and shower open outboard, onto the side decks, handily separating noises, smells and steam from the master cabin. 

Doors opening onto the side decks, and a large opening forward window provide excellent ventilation.

Flexible living

Most of your time afloat is spent in the cockpit. 

The Nutshell26 is all cockpit, with a 3.8m x 4.0m open plan space for eating, drinking, barbecuing and relaxing. In inclement weather, canvas awnings with clear windows drop down to close the entire cockpit area, creating an ambient, wind-free, and safe environment. 

Two trampolines offer an additional lounging area at the front of the boat.

Powering options

Twin 6KW electric pod-motors drive the boat at 5 knots. Slower cruising speeds conserve battery life for longer trips. Controls are ‘fly-by-wire’ joystick or twin hand- throttles.

Portland, OR:  The USGS Oregon Water Science Center operates the 26’ R/V Melanie Ann , a hydrographic survey vessel. Specialty outfitting on this vessel includes moon pool in the aft deck with telescoping arm for deploying high power transducers and a davit with variable speed reel for deploying towfish based sonar instruments and sediment samplers. Additional outfitting includes a retractable bimini top over the foredeck, side boarding door, flip out dive ladder, Garmin navigation electronics, computer work station and an amber light bar.

Lake Travis, TX: Travis County Park Rangers are responsible for public safety, search & rescue and emergency medical response calls. A large radar arch allows stowage of a dinghy on the cabin roof. Twin 150 HP outboards are installed on hydraulic jack plates for shallow operations.

Olympia, WA: Washington State DOT is responsible for performing bridge inspections and prioritizing maintenance work on over 7300 bridges. They selected this 26’ Munson trailerable dive boat for conducting underwater bridge inspections throughout the state. Outfitting includes scuba bottle racks, large HP cylinder rack, port & starboard side dive doors and bow door dive ladder. The cabin is outfitted with seating for five persons, Webatso diesel cabin heater and flip-up work table.

Columbia River, WA: Chief Joseph Dam is the largest hydropower producing dam operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Army Corps uses this Munson landing craft for equipment and personnel transport, dam maintenance, and data collection. Outfitting on this vessel includes an offset heated cabin with seating for four crew members, integrated gunnel storage shelves, cargo deck tie down pockets, Garmin navigation electronics and a recovery ladder on the swim step.

Their 26’ Munson fire/rescue boat is used on Joe Pool Lake, a large reservoir located just south of Dallas. Empire, MI: The National Park Service selected this 26’ Munson for servicing Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which covers 35 miles of shoreline and two historic islands on Lake Michigan. Tampa, FL: Tampa Electric Company has supplied the Central Florida area with electricity since 1899 and serves about 2000 square miles with a population of over one million. Their 26’ Munson is used at their Big Bend Power Station, situated on Tampa Bay. Outfitting includes a 6’ x 7’ enclosed cabin, MaxiLift 1 ton deck crane, side door, tow post, motor guard, Furuno radar/plotter/sounder, and triple axle trailer.

North Pole, AK: Alyeska Pipeline operates a pair of these 26’ Responder Class jet boats on the Yukon, Tanana and Copper Rivers. The shallow vee hull design allows the boats to operate in 1 foot of water. A Marine Power 430 HP V8 and Hamilton 241 jet provide plenty of power for towing in river currents. The center console T-top is outfitted with a canvas enclosure and forced air cabin heat. Additional outfitting includes flip-up deck seating, 12V washdown pump, tow post, and fuel transfer system with 12’ hose and nozzle for refueling smaller vessels.

Their Swan Lake Hydroelectric Power Plant is located at the head of Carroll Inlet on Revillagigedo Island and is only accessible by float plane or boat. Their 26’ Munson is utilized year round for transport of materials and crew changes in inclement weather. Outfitting includes a 7’ x 8’ cabin with seating for six, forced air cabin heater, Garmin 740 plotter/sounder, anchor windlass, and trailer.

Friday Harbor, WA: The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office required an all-weather, fast response, beach landing, day/night patrol boat with a foam collar fendering system. Their 26’ Munson is outfitted with a full width cabin, two shock absorbing pedestal seats, passenger bench seats with work table, and a forward cuddy cabin with V-berth. Additional outfitting includes a Webatso forced air cabin heater, law enforcement LED lighting, Furuno radar plotter sounder, L3 AIS system, and Flir night vision camera.

Lake Claiborne, LA: In 1966, the Louisiana state legislature created the Claiborne Parish Watershed District. The Watershed District commission works with all to help assure that resources are protected and developed in the public interest. The Claiborne Parish Sheriff uses their 26’ Munson for patrolling the watershed to assure boating safety, as well as maintain channel markers and perform dive/rescue operations. A Hummingbird 998 HD SI sonar with AS 360SSI transducer provides extremely sharp underwater imaging and is also capable of recording underwater video.

Sitka, AK: You don't have to walk the docks in Sitka very long before you spot a Munson. The newest member of the Sitka Munson fleet is this 26 Sport. It was designed to transport two ATVs to a remote property in the Southeast Alaska. It is outfitted with an electric pot hauler, Garmin GPS unit and an offset wheelhouse. The auxiliary outboard is mounted on a telescoping bracket and draws fuel from the main tank.

Richmond, CA: The Chevron Texaco refinery in Richmond operates a fleet of five Munson boats including the Osprey. When an oil tanker arrives, it is immediately surrounded by containment boom to protect the surrounding waterway in the event of an incident. A transom engine bracket was installed to increase the cargo deck. A removable boom roller assists the crew in retrieving the boom.

Panama City, Panama: The Panama Canal Authority Munson performs aquatic vegetation control activities within shallow rivers and emergency response support during oil spill incidents. Equipment includes a 12v bow door winch, walk-around wheelhouse, suspension pilot seat and 8 recessed cargo tie downs on forward deck.

Lemont, IL: The CITGO Lemont Refinery Emergency Response Team operates this Munson as an oil spill response boat in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Boat was built to pass through an invasive species barrier located near the refinery. Equipment includes a Hale Class 1 Attack Max 450 GPM fire pump, dual 2.5" discharges, 30 gallon Class B foam system, lifting eyes, Whelen LED Emergency light bar, and LED flood lights.

Olathe, KS: Garmin International operates trailerable hydrographic survey vessels. Each boat features a foredeck moon pool with a derrick designed for deploying the latest high power survey transducer. A Kohler 5EKD 5kW gasoline generator provides power for survey equipment and cabin air conditioning. A Garmin 7212 plotter/radar/sounder navigation suite includes an autopilot system.

Galveston, TX: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District fondly known as the "Custodians of the Coast". They operate their Munson on missions including flood risk mitigation, ecosystem restoration and military construction. It is also capable of launching and retrieving an ATV during shoreline protection and regulatory missions. Special features include wheelhouse window tint, roll down shades, a Kohler 5kW generator and a collapsible RAM mast.

Fontana Lake, TN: At 480 feet, Fontana Dam is the tallest concrete dam east of the Rocky Mountains and forms Fontana Lake with a shoreline of 240 miles. The National Park Service operates this 26’ Packcat for transporting ATV’s and work crews to remote areas in the Smoky Mountains National Park Complex. Outfitting includes a 3” tow post, engine guard, push knees, Garmin GPS plotter/sounder and Tuff tandem axle trailer.

Wainwright, AK: The Umiaq Corporation operates the M/V Seahorse Island and sister ship M/V Crescent Island in support of their onshore contingency response program contract with Shell Oil in the Chuckchi Sea. Designed to be multi-purpose response platforms, each boat was fitted with a 6" tow post and tow screen to allow them to tow fully laden barges and other equipment. The wheelhouse features a portable head and forced air cabin heat.

Oooguruk Island, AK: Pioneer Resources set up shop in Prudhoe Bay in 2002. Their goal was to streamline processes and reduce costs in landscape previously dominated by larger oil companies. Alaskan oil producers must be committed to environmental protection and responsibility, so Pioneer operates a Munson as part of its incident response action plan. Cold weather features include forced air cabin heat and aluminum storm window covers for arctic storage.

This Munson Utility based in England was built around a Yamaha power plant and TRP stern drive rather than our standard inboard power plants to ensure that the owner has immediate access to maintenance and service support in their home port. The forward deck features tie down rails perfect for securing ATV's.

Camano Island, WA: M/V Miss Tuffy II is the private sport fishing boat of a Camano Island resident. The wheelhouse features forced air heat, teak effect decking and a refrigerator. A head compartment with flushing head can be accessed from an interior wheelhouse door. To make the boat easy to clean and slip resistant, Line-X deck coating was applied to all walking surfaces. The single Volvo D4 power plant offers great fuel economy and range.

Theodore, AL: Response Resources provided oil spill response management support to the BP demobilization and decontamination effort in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Four Bayou Responder OSR's paired with Munson recovery barges are at work in the gulf. Special features include tow protection screens, under gunnel storage shelves and large push knees. Flood lighting on the deck let the vessels operate 24 hours a day.

The 80 has substantial exterior decks given its length. The aft cockpit centers around a large “working area” that can store tenders, toys, or expedition gear. The built-in crane could move a 20-foot ISO container or a personal sub, for example. Alternatively, the aft area can be used for outdoor entertaining or other activities such as fishing.

On sailboat cruises from Oyster Bay to Montauk, you can relax on deck, cooled by sea spray and a glass of wine. Or you can get up off your cushion and join the hands on deck in Oakdale. 

Here's how to get a taste of cruising on Long Island's waters, whether destined for a swimming hole or merely a photo-worthy sunset.

SAIL NEAR SHELTER ISLAND

Capt. Liz Gillooly leads private sails from Greenport that explore the waters around Shelter Island. Options include shorter morning and sunset sails (from $750 for a private charter up to six passengers) and traditional half-day charters. Guests may bring their own snacks and drinks, catering options available.

SAIL WITH A SUNSET

The view includes Gold Coast mansions lining tony Centre Island on cruises aboard the 40-foot sailboat. A U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain helms the ride through Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor. You’ll learn about the history of Christeen, built in 1883 in Glenwood Landing and a National Historic Landmark since 1992.

SAIL WITH A SWIM

The 65-foot Mon Tiki Largo, the 40-foot Mon Tiki and the 26-foot Mon Tiki Mini — all catamarans — are playfully named after explorer Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki. Amelia Ryan, who owns and operates the line with her husband, Capt. David Ryan, says the cruises explore a world beyond the chic resort community. “All of that falls away when you are out on the water with the sounds of the wind, the waves and the natural beauty,” which occasionally includes dolphin sightings, Ryan says. Passengers can bring their own lunch and beverages on a two- to three-hour private sail (starting $250) through early October, and there's plenty of time to take a plunge into the water from the vessel's swim ramp and paddleboards (life jackets provided).

SAIL AND SIGHTSEE

The Long Island Maritime Museum's historic oyster sloop Priscilla hosts two-hour cruises on the Great South Bay. Some sails have included options for lunch or dinner at The Snapper Inn restaurant in Oakdale. Sails include plenty of narration that covers the ship's history among a 500-boat fleet that plied the South Shore bays for oysters. The vessel was retired in the 1960s and restored in 2002. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.
