Her clean hull lines and wide beam aft are the foundation for the outstanding space and capabilities of the Oyster 495. She incorporates many of our big yacht features in a compact 50 foot yacht. Instantly recognisable as an Oyster, the Oyster 495 features our pioneering deck saloon, protected cockpit and helm stations, wraparound and forward-opening saloon windows. Flush decks, signature triple vertical seascape windows, foredeck skyscape windows, a powerful plumb bow and extended bowsprit complete the look.

We were the first boat builder to create a truly ergonomically designed cockpit and helm positions, with sprayhood and optional bimini for additional protection. Details like the cockpit table, with optional built-in refrigerated drinks locker, that comfortably seats up to eight people, is just one of the many triumphs of Oyster design thinking.

This 1984 Marine Trader is a 50’ trawler maintained by the same owner for over 20 years! She is a true turn-key loop boat. 

She boasts twin Perkins T6-354 (2 x 160 HP) diesel engines with 3,690 hours. The ship’s systems are powered by 50 amp shore-power or the Onan 8kW generator with approximately 1,380 hours. Both engine chambers are located in the lower level corridor and have a Fireboy fire suppression system as well as plenty of headroom. 

With a 50’ LOA and 15’ 5” beam, there is no shortage of space with plenty of headroom in each cabin. Three staterooms — guest v-berth, guest stateroom (mid-ship), master stateroom (aft) and three heads — two have full shower stalls; the other hosts the washer & dryer. The lower level can be accessed by the forward or aft stairwells found in the salon & helm areas. Four air conditioning units keep the boat comfortable all year long!

The main salon is accessed by the aft entrance or from either side of the helm through sliding doors. Inside, she is incredibly spacious with an L-shaped seat along the port side and the entertainment center & wine cooler on the starboard side. Most of the interior lighting has been replaced with LED bulbs but the novelty of the Marine Trader’s stylish decor is still present throughout the boat — i.e. woodwork, light fixtures, and unique designs. A full galley is found mid-ship with a full sized refrigerator / freezer-drawer, microwave, 2-burner induction stove, granite countertops and a plethora of pantry space.

Used Viking 50 Convertible For Sale

The Viking 50 Convertible launched in 2009 is a showcase of smart design. The hull form has been refined and features a flatter 12-degree deadrise that is about 3 degrees less than previous models (such as the 50 Convertible of 2001), giving it more lift. The hull’s shape is more convex in midships and aft sections for a softer, dryer ride in head seas. The 17 ft beam widened the engine room space which is well arranged and superbly functional for quick easy access to engines, machinery, batteries housed in fiberglass boxes, and systems. Engines are secured to beds of steel beams set on intermediate bulkheads to ensure alignment and minimize vibration.

DESCRIPTION

The 50 Convertible’s “sportscar” handling is a combination of power-assisted steering, high-speed stainless-steel rudders, and the 33” Veem props. ZF gears along with the MAN engines’ torque and RexRoth controls, enable the 50C to spin and maneuver on a rowdy billfish with finesse! No doubt, the Viking 50C is built battlewagon-tough to take on any sea condition, whether on the tournament circuit or on an extended cruise. But Viking’s interiors are also second to none. Working with the Viking design team, in-house craftsmen hand finish matched wood grains for classic elegance, designer accents such as headliner teak trim, and the ingenious use of space that are standard on the Viking Convertible fleet.

Viking’s commitment to excellence encompasses the entire vessel—bow to stern, interior and exterior. Salon entry is on starboard side via electric sliding door from cockpit steps. The beautifully appointed salon/galley/dinette layout features a soothing earthtone palette, L-shaped sectional couch that lifts for rod and reel storage underneath, and cocktail table to port with C-shaped dinette to port forward. Large flatscreen TV is mounted on bulkhead above dinette and can be viewed from all seating areas.

Cabinetry containing Bose home theater surround sound entertainment system, bottle storage, and main electrical panel, is on starboard aft side and flows into the L-shaped Corian-topped galley with island counter and 2 upholstered bar stools. Companionway to lower-level accommodations is on portside—flow shifts from starboard salon entry to port companionway and walk-through galley. Galley features recessed hob (3-burner cooktop) with Corian cover for expanded counter area and a clean uncluttered look. All appliances are hidden in cabinetry. Refrigerator and freezer drawers are undercounter. Dinette seats 3-4 around a gloss-finished teak table on single pedestal. Island bar provides extra dining places if needed or for serving snacks and beverages, etc.

The Viking 50C features a standard 3-stateroom, 2-head accommodations layout. Doorframes are arched—a very upscale design touch. Amidships master stateroom on starboard side features an island queen berth that lifts for storage underneath, nightstands, drawers, maple-lined hanging locker, 22” flatscreen TV, and ensuite head with large fiberglass shower stall. Two portside forward and aft guest staterooms feature generous sized over/under bunks and access to guest/day head located in between staterooms on portside. Washer and dryer are closeted in aft guest stateroom. All staterooms and heads are nicely appointed and very comfortable, making longer fishing trips and cruises enjoyable.

The open flybridge is the typical convertible set-up with helm console and two standard Murray helm chairs, forward lounge seating and starboard side bench seat that is hinged for storage access and has removable backrest for aft-facing jump seat at aft end. Helm pod is flanked by molded in boxes with gas-strut lifting lids for VHF radio and other electronics. Raised panel with three display screens are protected from elements by weather-tight clear acrylic covers. Some flybridge options could be teak helm pod with single lever controls, bow thruster, hardtop with overhead bins for electronics and electric teaser reels, tower, outriggers, center rigger, 3-sided zipped Costa enclosure, rocket launchers on aft deck rail, and more. Electronics packages could be customized by owner and installed by Viking’s Atlantic Marine Electronics. Extended aft deck provides walkaround space behind helm chairs and the overhang shades the cockpit mezzanine below. A hatch in aft deck and angled ladder takes you down to the mezzanine level of cockpit.

The 140 sq ft cockpit with observation mezzanine has sufficient area for a full-size fighting chair. Viking includes a deck plate for that option. The large freezer under the hinged portside mezzanine bench seat comes with a divider to keep bait separate from food. Engine room access is through bench seat section that lifts up to reveal steps down to watertight door. Angled ladder with handhold is on starboard side over cabinet with tackle drawers. Refrigerated drink box is under step to salon. Either of two fore/aft fishboxes in cockpit sole could be plumbed for livewell. Another insulated box could be for ice storage and fed by optional Eskimo ice machine (in engine room below). Built-in transom fishbox is another option. Transom door with lift gate is standard, along with transom swim steps. Under gunwale stowage hides shore water, cable TV, phone, and power connections, equipment such as gaffs, and more. Rupp flush-mounted rod holders are standard. Cockpit could be configured and outfitted to an owner’s fishing style and personal preferences, making each 50 Convertible a semi-custom sport fishing yacht.

Viking 50 Convertible length overall (LOA) is 54’8” with standard bow pulpit; beam is 17’ and draft is 4’10”. Fuel capacity is 1,000 or 1,200 (optional) gallons, water capacity is 183 gallons, and holding tank is 54 gallons. Displacement weight with standard fuel load is 66,500 lbs. Standard power: Twin 1,100 hp MAN V10 1100CRM diesel inboards. Optional power: Twin 1,360 hp MANV12 1360CRM diesel inboards.

Killer whales attack and sink sailing boat off Gibraltar

There have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in may 2020.

Matt Johnston was steering his boat near Sines, Portugal, when a pack of killer whales slammed into his boat — and actually tore off pieces of the vessel. Similar reports have been made in Portugal involving boat damage due to killer whales.

An unknown number of orcas rammed a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday morning, causing it to later sink, the latest attack in a trend that has been terrifying sailors in the region for the past four years. 

The latest incident took place at around 9 a.m. when crew members aboard the 50-foot-long Alboran Cognac called rescue services for help, saying that their ship had been damaged by the apex predators about 14 miles from Cape Spartel, local outlet El Pais reports, citing Spain's maritime rescue service. Cape Spartel is located at the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar.

A helicopter was mobilized and the oil tanker MT Lascaux which was sailing nearby was also asked to provide assistance.

The tanker eventually rescued the two people onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation "Gladis."

According to the research group An Atlantic Orca Task Force (GTOA), which tracks populations of the Iberian orca subspecies, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

It is unclear why the orcas are targeting boats but some experts believe they may be acts of revenge.

Marine biologist Alfredo Lopez Fernandez told Live Science previously that the lead whale, a female orca scientists have called White Gladis, suffered a "critical moment of agony," likely a collision with a boat or entanglement with a fishing line , that turned her more aggressive. 

Other theories include it being a playful manifestation of the mammals' curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favorite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

All but a handful resulted in only minor injuries or damage. However, the attacks have grown more frequent and a few have led to boats sinking.

For instance, in August last year, Phep Philouceros, 77, was sailing off the coast of Cape Vincent in Portugal, when his boat was attacked by orcas. The sailor, who has 55 years of experience, said the orcas continued for 30 minutes — even following the boat as it was towed to shore. He caught part of the attack on video.
