1980 Reliance 44 Sloop

Reliance 44 sloop, “Voyager”.  Just finished a 14 yr. circumnavigation and is completely equipped for a Caribbean cruse or another circumnavigation.  Long, narrow and strongly built with a deep “V” hull, modified full keel and barn door rudder, makes Voyager a no-nonsense fast and sea-kindly yacht.  An aft cockpit layout with hard dodger/bimini, raised cabin top to mast, then flush deck fwd of mast, makes "Voyager" a safe and comfortable vessel, at sea. The interior is, inviting and comfortable with all the creature comforts such as a powerful refrigeration system, custom crafted mattress for the V-berth and a computer-centric nav station/office. The solar panels, (5), KISS wind generator & a 210A engine driven alternator cover all the power requirements. Propulsion is via the venerable, “work-horse”, Perkins 4-236, 82 hp diesel connected to a 4-blade, feathering propeller, providing the most efficient drive system under power and low drag under sail.  The rig is simple with a slab reefing mainsail and roller furling Genoa.  A quick release inner forestay provides heavy weather capability and a clear foredeck when not needed.  "Voyager" has been loved and maintained by a knowledgeable Engineer/Captain. She comes completely equipped with too many spares to list including a complete set of engine accessory, spares, making her ready to go back to blue water again.

Starting at the foot of the companionway to starboard is a dedicated nav station designed around an integrated computer-based navigation system, a combination head/shower to starboard with vanity, sink and beautiful teak grating. To port is a full size quarter berth. Moving forward is the main salon and galley amidships which is very well ventilated with numerous overhead hatches and ports, the cabin sole is teak and holly. The salon has a large centerline drop leaf table and a settee to port and starboard with storage below the settees. Located aft of the starboard settee is the galley. There is a large double stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressure water. There is a stainless steel 2-burner stove with oven, 3 drawer bureau and overhead cabinets for ample storage. The engine compartment is located beneath the sink. Forward of the main salon are two large stand-up storage lockers starboard and port. These are large lockers with ample room for dive tanks, safety gear and general storage. Continue forward to the large v-berth cabin with a custom mattress by Handcrafted Mattress Company. All the way forward is the chain locker access.

Reliance 44

  • By Jen Brett
  • Updated: September 12, 2011

reliance 44 sailboat for sale

Several years ago, when my husband, Green, and I went cruising on our first boat, I learned to appreciate the importance of having clear decks to work on and a safe interior with plenty of handholds. These points were on my mind when an online listing for a Reliance 44 caught my eye. Her traditional lines and ketch rig made her look like she’d go places.

Designed and built by Pierre Meunier in Montréal, Reliance 44s were available either as a hull and deck to be finished by the owner or in various stages of completion from the factory. Since many, including my own, were finished by the original owners, there are vast differences between boats in terms of cabin layout, hardware, and the general quality of the interior. The hull and deck are constructed of hand-laid fiberglass with a 1-inch balsa core. The core provides for a stiff hull that’s much lighter than solid glass, and the additional insulating effect has been a bonus for living aboard through New England winters. There’s solid fiberglass in the important places: the chainplates, deck fittings, and keel. The fiberglass work is top-notch, and delamination hasn’t been an issue with our boat or with any other Reliance that we’ve encountered. Meunier was one of the first builders to utilize temperature and humidity control during layup.

Our boat, Lyra , has definitely gone places. She’s been around the world and has several additional transatlantic runs under her keel. With this in mind, we expected to discover issues with the bulkhead tabbing or water intrusion in the balsa core. However, our pre-purchase survey revealed no such problems.

We’ve now owned Lyra for three years, and she’s exceeded our expectations in just about every way ( read “At Home Afloat,” Jen Brett’s blog, here ). Laid up in 1975 and splashed in 1980, she’s certainly a classic, but with a few system upgrades, she’s become a comfortable, modern cruising boat.

Under sail, the helm is easily felt and balances well. She’s also fairly quick—200-mile days aren’t out of the question. Below the waterline, she features a modified full keel and attached rudder, so she tracks well once the sails are trimmed properly.

Below, there’s plenty of storage, substantial fiddles around the countertops, and excellent handholds everywhere. By contemporary standards, she’s narrow, so she’s not as spacious as other 44-footers. There’s a large sail locker aft of the chain locker, which also cuts into interior space. The two bunks to port and starboard in the aft cabin are excellent sea berths.

A 40-horsepower diesel was the standard auxiliary in the Reliance 44, which may be considered underpowered these days, and my only real beef with the boat is access to the engine. On our boat, it’s located beneath the galley “island”; moving that is a two-person job, and not something that can be done easily at sea.

The June 1981 issue of Cruising World describes the Reliance 44 as a “sturdy and pretty boat that will stand out in any crowd of modern cruising boats.” Now, 30 years later, it’s still true. Depending on the fit and finish, Reliance 44s usually list between $85,000 and $150,000.

Canadian Sunset was built by the Reliance Yacht Co. in Ontario, Canada.  The original and current owners fitted her and completed her interior prior to starting their around the world adventures.  The interior was redone by craftsmen in Asia.  She is currently lying in Petersburg, Alaska prior to the owners making a last cruise South to B.C. during the Spring and Summer of 2011. The design aim of the Reliance 44 was to be a seaworthy, fast and comfortable cruising yacht employing traditional, full keel lines and a classic appearance while enjoying modern construction techniques and materials.

1975 Reliance 44 Offered for your consideration is this highly capable Bluewater Cruiser. This is the reliance 44 / hull number 4 out of 45. Of the 45 built, 42 are still in existence most of which have circumnavigated. Hull number 4 has transatlantic or two under her keel. Her sleek and fast Hull was completely laid by hand, the first in a temperature and humidity controlled environment in the industry! She's laid up with a one inch end cut balsa core making her hull among the strongest and most solid in the market. Additionally you benefit from the thermal and sound deadening insulation. After one night that will be tremendously appreciated. As stated this is a fast hull, 200 mile days are not uncommon. Recent work includes Rebuild of the Perkins 4107, new rudder, rebuilt Wagner hydraulic steering, new prop, new shaft, new cutless bearings ( shaft and rudder shoe), new packing, through hulls cleaned lubed and rebedded , removal of obsolete electronics in the hull, new mast boot, rebuilt the Morris controls and new cables. New bottom paint and new top side paint. Also included but not installed is a Wagner hydraulic autopilot system, wind generator , data Marine system, Pure water desalination system, and Groce type k porcelain head, New in box Intex Marine vapor warning system. Tons of miscellaneous bits, pieces, equipment et cetera. Boat comes with 2 sets of sails in remarkable condition. The rig on this boat is strong and powerful. It features Proctor tapered masts , all stays and shrouds are 3/8 inch stainless cable and every termination has a stay lock fitting, 43 and all!!! North Sea turnbuckles couple them to the massive chain plates, Meisner self tailing wenchs, 2 x4 teak toe rails with stainless scuppers to name a few pieces of serious equipment put into this boat. This fine vessel should still considered a light project. She needs a bit of updating to her cabin. mainly paint varnish and perhaps some wall covering. I find it a bit on the dark side. Look at the photos and you can see the quality work that was put into it her salon as well as what needs to be done. the simple open layout it's perfect for live aboard, the V birth is enormous. She even has a cedar lined closet in the master suite. Look closely at the photos of this fine Bluewater Cruiser and her features and decide for yourself if this is for you. selling prices the range between 80 and $200,000. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a boat of this quality and size at this price. Owner is available for consultation as well as performing any work her new owner may require. Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
