SAILING YACHT A – World’s Biggest Sailing Yacht – $600 Million

SAILING YACHT A measures 143 meters making her the world’s biggest sailing yacht.

SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.

Launched in 2017, both the interior and exterior of this mega sailing yacht were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects.

The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects.

He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.

Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumored that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel.

This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.

The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery that stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin.

Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht.

A third window is located at the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and is almost comparable to a submarine.

A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience in this unusual location.

Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.

The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew member.

Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A.

No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.

Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together. 

However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorized companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.

Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.

The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side.

While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumored that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint.

The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed. 

Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests.

This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below-deck space for crew members.

Due to her large size and a small number of cabins, it is assumed that SAILING YACHT A can welcome a large number of day guests onboard for special events and celebrations.

Biggest sailing yacht controversy

It has been the topic of debate that SAILING YACHT A is not the largest yacht in the world but instead the ‘largest sail-assisted motor yacht.

Depending on the definition used, that would make BLACK PEARL the biggest sailing yacht in the world.

The most expensive sailing yacht

SAILING YACHT A is the most expensive sailing yacht in the world and cost an estimated price of US $600 million – a relatively “affordable” price considering her large size and tonnage.

A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.

This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.

Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.

In addition to any cost for the crew, supplies, and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million.

SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter.

Specifications

SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten.

Paired with her unusual futuristic design, this mega sailing yacht has a length of 143 meters (469 ft), a beam of 25 meters (82 ft), and a draft of 8 meters (26 ft) making her a more than an impressive vessel.

SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard, and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction.

To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.

It is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on its launch date. It has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines. 

SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 meters (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.

Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.  

Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 meters (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London.

However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.

She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.

She is rumored to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.

It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.

With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines .

Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state-of-the-art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button. 

SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminum to reduce weight and keep the vessel light.

She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.

During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel.

Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.

They specialize in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.

She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the center and several elevators spread across the yacht.

She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy for the owners.

Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.

Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests and taking them on excursions.

One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fiber speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.

This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.

The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots. 

The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skis, tenders, and other equipment.

High-profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumored to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown.

Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style. 

However, despite her cutting-edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.

The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.

There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel.

Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

• Ultra-luxury cruise line  Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.
• The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.
• Emerald, known for river cruises, has been investing more in its ocean-based business.

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

Yes, the ships look like yachts. And yes, they're marketed as such.

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

Emerald’s upcoming 393-foot-long, 128-guest Kaia would be perfect for fans of small, high-end ships.

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.

F1’s Miami GP leaned into the ‘joke’ with its fake marina — and created a symbol

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Walk through Gate 9, over the Turn 6 bridge, across a short fan zone, and you will encounter a vibrant, eye-catching aqua blue. The surface is smooth and serene. Four yachts are docked on it, all surrounded by a lovely marina.

A picturesque environment. The kind that makes you feel like you could be in a tropical oceanside setting — except for one notable thing.

While the yachts are real, the water they “float” on is fake. Plywood is laid down and then covered in blue vinyl material, complete with waves and ripples designed into the covering to create the impression that the yachts are floating. Thus, the Miami Grand Prix appears to have a waterfront backdrop despite being located in Miami Gardens at the landlocked Hard Rock Stadium, also home to the NFL ’s Miami Dolphins.

“We joke about this a lot internally,” said Tyler Epp, Miami Grand Prix’s president, according to Business Insider. “We never took ourselves too seriously with the marina. We’re not sitting on the Pacific Ocean or the Red Sea like the Formula 1 race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. But Miami is so much about boats, beauty, culture — and credit to the team, who wanted to create an opportunity for people to experience that in a unique way.”

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and club CEO Tom Garfinkel originally envisioned the Miami Grand Prix in downtown Miami. Had this plan come to fruition, the scenic waterfront setting indelibly linked to Miami would’ve occurred naturally. However, pushback from city officials scuttled those plans, necessitating a Plan B.

And just like that, the idea of racing along the ocean vanished with the shift to Hard Rock Stadium. After all, it’s hard to showcase the ocean when the Atlantic is several miles away.

“We have been very committed to, from the beginning, the brand of Miami,” Miami Grand Prix president Tyler Epp said in 2023. “We’re going to create Miami as the lens for which people are viewing the race.”

Thus, the idea was born to create the kind of visual associated with South Florida by creating a replica marina, complete with a yacht club. In the third year of the Miami Grand Prix, the setting inside Turns 6, 7 and 8 has become an identifying symbol linked to the race.

Organizers admit the setting is tongue-in-cheek. Since being publicly unveiled in 2022, the marina has been subject to plenty of jokes and memes across social media. But they, and those partaking in the revelry in the marina, will tell you that’s OK. What has been created is a fun atmosphere that accomplishes the goal of giving the circuit as close to an authentic “Miami feel” as it can despite the obvious restrictions.

“This is as unique a viewing experience as you’re going to find,” said Harris Glaser, president of Midnight Express Powerboats, who’s purchased two of the four available slips. “And, honestly, when you’re up top and look down, it does look like water. The dock aesthetic helps, too.”

As Glaser speaks, qualifying for Saturday’s sprint race is underway, with cars buzzing through every few seconds. Not that too many folks seem to be paying close attention. The on-track action is secondary — at best.

Instead, most seem to enjoy the festivities on this sunshine-baked afternoon.

On the other side of the “water,” a DJ is playing a constant stream of hip hop from 50 Cent (“Just a Little Bit”) to Snoop Dogg (“Drop It Like It’s Hot”) to Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz (“Get Low”) among the rotation. The thumping music compels some attendees to dance on the boat decks. And if you desire an adult beverage, there is no shortage of options as each of the two Midnight Express yachts has assorted bottles of hard liquor and beer on ice.

Even if it’s a facsimile, the vibe still has a very Miami feel—exactly what race organizers pitched Hasler when they approached him about the opportunity three-plus years ago.

With Midnight Express based in Miami and its powerboats appealing to a similar high-dollar consumer that likely would find the Miami Grand Prix’s marina environment appealing, Hessler thought it made sense. He quickly signed on, becoming the first to do so. He politely declined what he paid to have two of his boats lifted into the marina to (essentially) serve as suites for him and his guests, but that he’s been doing this all three years indicates he’s found the investment worth it.

“It’s expensive,” Hessler said. “Very expensive.”

Although the “water” may be fake, these boats certainly are not. Both Midnight Express boats are working vessels, each featuring five 450-horsepower engines. On Tuesday, they will be transported from the circuit to a dock in the Atlantic, 10 miles away.

No, the Miami Grand Prix doesn’t abut an actual body of water as initially intended, but race organizers got creative to achieve their objective. And the finished product more than serves its purpose.

“It’s the Monaco experience in Miami,” Glaser said. “It’s pretty incredible to pull something like this off.”

Kendrick Lamar doubles down with fiery Drake diss: Listen to '6:16 in LA'

Kendrick Lamar has taken a page from Drake 's playbook and released back-to-back diss tracks against the Canadian rapper.

Following a surprise drop of his brutal " Euphoria " track on Tuesday, the Compton, California, native released " 6:16 in LA " on his Instagram Friday morning. The song title is a reference to a song format Drake is known for popularizing, including "6PM in New York" from "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" to "8am in Charlotte" from his recent album, "For All the Dogs."

"It's survival," Lamar opens the track. "I think somebody lying. Smell somebody lying."

Art for the 3-minute and 44-second track includes a photo of a black Maybach glove. Rick Ross , who entered the convoluted rap beef last week with "Champagne Moments," is a founder of the rap label Maybach Music Group.

Lamar begins the track discussing buying yachts and taking trips to Ibiza, in what may be a nod to Ross' "luxury rap" style of music.

"Who am I if I don't go to war?" he raps, later adding that messing "with good people make good people go to bat."

Lamar takes a shot at Drake's label and team, rapping, "Have you ever thought OVO is working for me?" before calling Drake a "fake bully."

He continues: "I hate bullies / You must be a terrible person / Everyone inside your team whispering that you deserve it."

Lamar then says he was having "fun" with the tit-for-tat until Drake put "money in the streets" for dirt against the "Like That" rapper . But Lamar claims Drake "lost money 'cause they came back with no receipts."

"I'm sorry that I live a boring life / I love peace / But war ready if the world is ready to see you bleed," he says.

Lamar continues the offensive on OVO. "If you were street smart you would've caught that your entourage is only to hustle you," he raps, claiming Drake has 100 people on salary, and "20 of them want you as a casualty."

The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper then ends the track with reference to Michael Jackson 's hit "You Are Not Alone": "It's time that you look around on who's around you / Before you figure that you're not alone, ask what Mike would do."

Both Drake and Lamar have referenced Jackson in their music, with Drake saying he's "one hit" away from Jackson's record of 13 hits on Billboard's Hot 100 on his October track "First Person Shooter." Drake has since tied with Jackson with that very song. Drake has also sampled the late singer's vocals for the 2018 track "Don't Matter to Me" from an unreleased 1980 studio session.

Lamar followed up on Future and Metro Boomin 's "Like That," rapping: "Prince outlived Mike Jack.'"

Kendrick Lamar's back-to-back disses '6:16 in LA,' 'Euphoria' follow Drake disses

In "Euphoria," Lamar complimented Drake's track " Back To Back " saying he "liked that record." The 2015 single was a diss track aimed at rapper Meek Mill , and was Drake's follow-up to his first diss, "Charged Up."

Now, Lamar has released a back-to-back of his own. On "Euphoria," Lamar called Drake a "scam artist," took shots at his relationship with his son and invoked the Toronto-born rapper's feud with Pusha T .

He continued: "How many more fairytale stories about your life 'til we've had enough? How many more Black features 'til you finally feel that you're Black enough?"

Drake, who is biracial, was previously called out by  Pusha T  in a similarly vicious feud for a photo featuring him in blackface. After Pusha T used the picture as the cover for his diss track "The Story of Adidon," Drake said the blackface photo was from 2007 when he was working on a "project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast." Pusha T also revealed Drake had a child, unbeknownst to the public at the time.

"Euphoria" and "6:16 in LA" follow Drake's diss tracks "Push Ups" and "Taylor Made Freestyle." "Taylor Made Freestyle"  was later  pulled from streaming services after Tupac Shakur's estate threatened to sue over the use of a AI voice imitation. "The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of Tupac's voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult," a cease-and-desist from the estate  obtained by USA TODAY  said.

Airbnb Is Debuting an ‘Up’ House That Levitates and 10 Other Pop-Culture-Themed Rentals

After its ”Barbie” Malibu Dreamhouse house last year lit up the internet, Airbnb Inc. wants to make going viral a more regular thing, announcing on Wednesday a new category dedicated solely to pop-culture-themed rentals inspired by films like “Up” and “Purple Rain” and celebrities such as Kevin Hart and Doja Cat.

The online rental platform made that announcement as spending on travel continues to clash with spending on groceries and other basics. But some Wall Street analysts say the new segment, called Icons, could help bring new and existing users to the online rental platform.

Airbnb shares rose 1.4% on Thursday, and are up about 16% year to date.

The company also suggested the rentals could attract more interest abroad. And similar to the “Barbie” house—which was part of the “Barbie” movie’s gargantuan marketing campaign last year—those locations could be used as promotional tools for other films, shows and celebrities.

“There are natural moments when culture celebrates these people, and that’s when we want to participate,” Hiroki Asai, global head of marketing at Airbnb, said in an interview at a launch event in a studio in Los Angeles. “And that’s when we want people to use the platform.”

Among the new rentals that are either available for booking requests now or will be later this year: A replica of Carl’s house from the Disney and Pixar movie “Up,” with more than 8,000 balloons attached to the roof, that levitates via crane; a recreation of the X-Mansion in Westchester, N.Y., whose interior and furnishings have been painted over to look like the “X-Men” comic; and the house in Minneapolis from “Purple Rain,” with which Airbnb worked with Prince’s estate, and where fans can listen to unreleased Prince tracks. The musical duo Wendy & Lisa, who played in the Revolution—Prince’s backing band during some of his biggest hits in the 1980s—will host.

Asai said that the launch of the X-Mansion, which people can request now, and the Purple Rain house, available for booking requests starting in August, were timed roughly to coincide with the Disney+ animated series “X-Men ’97,” whose first season ends May 15, and the 40th anniversary of ”Purple Rain.”

Others, like a stay at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, are timed with the Summer Olympics. That stay will offer a private tour of of the museum’s Impressionist collection, and the bedroom terrace will offer a view of the Olympics’ opening ceremony along the Seine.

Asai said that other events—including a stay hosted by Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor in Chennai, India, and a week on tour with reggaeton artist Feid—would help Airbnb broaden its appeal in India and Latin America.

Other events offered by the Icons segment include a game night with TikToker Khaby Lame in Milan. Airbnb users can also sign up for a tequila tasting with comedian Kevin Hart and a living-room performance by the artist Doja Cat.

During a presentation at the launch event—which offered a walk-through tour of the “Up” house replica—Chief Executive Brian Chesky said the Icons segment was “a decade in the making.” And he said it arrived after the company found success in rentals modeled after an Ikea bedroom, the nation’s last remaining Blockbuster Video outlet in Oregon and the Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse.

“What if we made these experiences even bigger, did them all the time, and you could find them directly in the app?” Chesky said. “Well, that is exactly what we’ve done.”

Bernstein analysts suggested the new Icons category could be used to help engagement.

“These properties (for example, the Barbie Dreamhouse) have been a great source of traffic and engagement for Airbnb,” they said in a research note on Wednesday.

“Airbnb [is] suggesting that these limited-time properties will now be announced on Airbnb first, encouraging users to regularly check into the site to make sure nothing is missed,” they added.

Anyone interested in one of the Icons stays will have to submit a request saying why they want to go. Airbnb, via the help of an outside group, will select visitors based on what they write in that request. How long that selection process takes depends on the location.

It was unclear whether Airbnb might break out any financials for the segment, or exactly how many Icons offerings would be made after the 11 announced on Wednesday. But Jay Carney, Airbnb’s global head of policy and communications, said the category would be sticking around.

The bigger move into such stays has meant that Airbnb has had to reach further into new spaces like set design, event planning and construction. Chesky said that for the “Up” house, the company had to work with structural engineers in an effort to ensure the house would stay intact while lifted by a crane usually used to lift windmills (and don’t worry, guests won’t be inside when it’s raised but can watch from the ground). The interior of the X-Mansion, he said, included the props and the plants, was hand-painted.

Carney said that the company contracts out the builds on some of those properties, and said the teams they worked with were the same as those on its “Barbie” and “Shrek” properties. The seeming ubiquity of the “Barbie” house, he suggested, was a reason to move forward with other properties like it.

“When you’re onto something, you should probably double down on it,” Carney said.

The 2024 Fort Lauderdale Air Show is coming back next weekend and with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headlining, fans are expected to flock to the beach to look up at the sky for a breathtaking performance.

What are the dates and times of the Fort Lauderdale Air Show?

The 2024 Fort Lauderdale Air Show will be held May 11–12, 2024.

The opening ceremony starts at 11:15 a.m. and the flight performances are set to take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. while the headline performance which will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds this year, will start at 2:00 p.m. and finish at 2:45 p.m. according to Saturday and Sunday's itinerary.

How can I purchase tickets to the Fort Lauderdale Air Show?

According to the official site, the air show is a gated beach event and tickets are required for entry.

Tickets vary in price based on the view. Patrons can choose between Drop Zone Beach, The Sand Boxes, Flight Line Club VIP and the Pelican VIP Penthouse.

Children five and under are free in the Drop Zone seating area and do not require a ticket.

Children two and under are free and considered a “lap infant” in the Flight Line Club VIP. Any child three and older or that requires their own seat must have a ticket.

Everyone, regardless of age, counts toward the four-person limit for the Sand Box seating. Your purchase of a one Sand Box includes entry for up to four individuals per box.

What should I bring to the show?

It's recommended to bring sunscreen, an umbrella and if you purchase tickets in the Drop Zone or Sand Boxes you should bring your own beach chairs and you can also bring a cooler with food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Flight Lane VIP guests will be provided with food and beverage.

What roads will be closed for the event?

State Road A1A will be closed on Saturday and Sunday to road traffic and open to pedestrians

Where can I park?

Those who purchase Sand Box and Drop Zone tickets are invited to use the public parking area at the Galleria Mall on Sunrise Boulevard. Flight Line Club VIP ticketed guests will receive parking included with their tickets.

If you have a parking pass it's recommended to print it but you can also show it from your phone to the parking attendants.

What if it rains?

If weather or other causes beyond control get in the way of the event it may be terminated early.

If the event is cancelled in its entirety due to an occurrence outside of the control of Event Management, management may attempt to make an accommodation the following day or at next year’s event for discounted admission.

Do you recommend ear protection for children?

While ear protection is not required, it is recommended, especially for children under five who may be startled by the noise of the aerial performance teams.

Can I come and go from the ticketed beach areas during the day?

Yes. Drop Zone Beach guests will receive a wristband that will allow you exit and re-enter the beach areas throughout the day.

Flight Line VIP Club guests will receive a wristband and a lanyard for reentry to the FLC beach area.

Can I view the show form a boat?

The U.S. Coast Guard has established a Safety Zone for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show flown from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport in accordance with FAA regulations and in consultation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Army Corps of Engineers.

Viewing of the Fort Lauderdale Air Show is permitted in the area on the eastern perimeter of the United States Coast Guard Safety Zone. The eastern perimeter extends for four miles parallel with the flight path of the performing aircraft and is approximately one mile away from the air show centerline.

U.S. Coast Guard, Broward County Sheriff and Fort Lauderdale Police will be patrolling the perimeter of the Coast Guard Safety Zone and will strictly enforce the perimeter of the Coast Guard Safety Zone.

King Frederik and Queen Mary have given their social media presence a royal refresh.

A few days after the Danish Royal House revealed the new gala portraits of the King and Queen of Denmark, courtiers revealed a brand new photo from what appears to be the same shoot for the royal couple’s new profile picture. 

As of May 3, the Danish Royal House’s Instagram and Facebook page avatars have been updated with a previously unseen portrait of the couple in their gala finery, including the emerald tiara, necklace, earrings and a large brooch that are part of the Danish crown jewels for Queen Mary. The new photo was taken at a side angle and showed the couple smiling side by side. It is credited to Steen Evald on Facebook, the same photographer who took the other three gala portraits in the Green Room at Christiansborg Palace.

The never-before-seen portrait of Queen Mary, 52, and King Frederik, 55, captured a candid moment for the royal couple, who have had a life-changing year.

On Jan. 14, Queen Margrethe abdicated on the 52nd anniversary of her accession two weeks after announcing the unexpected move on New Year’s Eve, making her the first Danish monarch to voluntarily step down from the throne in nearly 900 years.

Her eldest son became King Frederik X, his wife Queen Mary and their 18-year-old son Crown Prince Christian , taking the King’s former styling as heir. Frederik and Mary’s three younger children —  Princess Isabella , 17, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine , 13 — each moved up a spot in the line of succession following the change of reign.

King Frederik and Queen Mary have been busy with royal duties in the weeks since and opened up in their first interview since King Frederik’s accession about the big day and their vision for the modern monarchy on May 2. The couple spoke to Danish broadcaster TV 2 aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog as they continued a tradition of embarking on the sovereign’s official residence for summer cruises and overseas visits to kick off the summer sailing season.

According to Hello! magazine , the King said the balcony appearance to mark the change of reign was "overwhelming," but he felt welcomed by the Danish people as he stepped up into his new royal role. 

"It was very overwhelming and moving. I felt extremely well received. The highlight was when Mary and the children came out and stood right behind me, and I had the Danes standing in front of me and waving. It was one of the most amazing things to experience in my life," King Frederik said.

Queen Mary also spoke about the emotional moment: "I stood with the children, and when you stepped out onto the balcony towards your fate, it was a moment that moved me incredibly much. We could hear and feel it, even if we couldn't see it. It was a beautiful moment. I was both very happy and very proud."

In the wide-ranging conversation with the national outlet, the royals said they would uphold previous protocol while thinking of the "present and future" of the monarchy. 

"We have not set a fixed route, but a good direction. We are going to continue the tracks we have laid. Our interest in nature and communities and business. We also want to be a royal couple who are visible and present throughout Denmark," Queen Mary added about their approach.

Next week, the King and Queen will make their first official state visit to Sweden from May 6 to May 7 and start a major tour of the Northern region. From there, they will pay a state visit to Norway, with further plans for official visits to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which are part of the kingdom of Denmark, in June.
