Salvage operation underway for grounded 49m superyacht 007 in Greece

A salvage operation is underway to remove the 49-metre Aegean Yacht 007  from her current resting place in the waters of Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece.  The yacht was hoisted into an upright position in the early hours of March 21, and a post by the mayor of Kythnos, Mr Stamatios Garderis, said "it's a matter of hours to remove 007 ". The salvage operation began on March 6.

Prior to the removal, the semi-submerged superyacht had been in the same spot since she ran aground and listed in the late hours of  September 2 2022. It is understood that the incident occurred when the yacht struck an underwater obstacle as a result of a failure in the navigation system and began to take on water. Allegedly, she was then deliberately grounded to avoid sinking in deep water. 

The local Coast Guard confirmed she was resting on shallow rocks around 15 metres from the shoreline.

Authorities were quick to contain any potential pollution or debris within a floating sea wall but the extent of the damage to the local area is not yet known. At the time of the incident, five passengers were safely rescued from the yacht.

007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht as a 32 metre yacht. She has been extended twice since delivery, bringing her total LOA up to 49 metres.

The fate of the superyacht is still not known.

Footage captured the calamitous moment that a massive superyacht named “007” sank — with five passengers inside — in Greece

The maritime disaster occurred Friday night after the 160-foot vessel, which reportedly sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman, experienced a GPS malfunction off Kythos Island, SWNS reported. This reportedly prompted the captain to bring it closer to shore than was advisable.

As a result, the James Bond-themed luxury boat hit the rocks, and began taking on water with five passengers inside.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that’s how the ship got to that position,” explained a boat owner who witnessed the catastrophe.

Accompanying footage, uploaded to YouTube, shows the swanky vessel, which sports a helipad, lying half-sunken on its side around 50 feet from the nearby Kolona Beach.

Thankfully, all five passengers were rescued and transported to safety before the “007” sank. “No people were hurt,” described the aforementioned eyewitness. “The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night.”

Rescuers also erected an anti-pollution perimeter in the area, although there was reportedly “no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery,” the bystander said.

Local authorities will launch a probe into the sinking of the “007,” which was delivered in 2006 by the Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht, but whose owner remains unknown.

Along with a helipad, the superyacht reportedly boasts five cabins, including a master suite, and can reportedly sleep ten people.

This isn’t the first time a luxury vessel has visited Davy Jones’ locker of late. Last month, heart-pounding footage emerged of a 130-foot superyacht capsizing and sinking stern-first into the water off the Italian coast.

In February, a Ukrainian man was arrested for partially sinking his Russian tycoon boss’s $7.7 million luxury super yacht in Spain in protest over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

James Bond-Themed Superyacht Called '007' Sinks Within Yards of Greek Beach

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore," a boat owner who watched the event unfold said of the captain's actions

Five passengers aboard a superyacht named in honor of British superspy James Bond had to be rescued after it capsized and began sinking yards away from a Greek beach Friday.

The 160-foot superyacht named "007" experienced a GPS malfunction around 50 feet from the beaches of Kolona Bay on the Mediterranean island of Kythnos, SWNS reported.

"They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom," a boat owner said about the vessel's captain, per SWNS

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that's how the ship got to that position." Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident, added SWNS.

"The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night," the local continued, per SWNS.

"Next morning they put an antipollution perimeter," the boat owner continued. "It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery."

According to SuperYacht Times , the "007" was developed by Aegean Yachts in 2006 and can accommodate up to 10 people. It also has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

In true James Bond style, however, the identity of the owner has not been revealed.

The sinking of the 007 follows the demise of a 131-foot superyacht named My Saga, which capsized nine miles off the coast of Catanzaro, Italy in August.

Shocking footage released by the Italian coast guard showed the vessel sinking stern-first near the Catanzaro Marina.

According to the BBC , "the Italian coast guard rescued all nine people on board – four passengers and five crew. The outlet reported the ship was heading from Gallipoli to Milazzo.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing and it is still unclear what caused the yacht to sink.

You could say that 2022 has not been a good year for superyachts in general, and you wouldn’t be completely off the mark. In between seizures and legal complications, and what seems like an increased number of totaling incidents, superyacht-watching has definitely gotten more… dramatic this past year.

We can now add another incident to that ever-growing list: 007, a superyacht delivered by Aegean Yachts in 2006, has sunk after running aground off the coast of Greece. It happened on Friday night (September 2), with reports in the local  media  saying that the captain hit rocks under the surface of the water.

The ship is now almost completely submerged in Kolona Bay in Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece, only some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. The Greek Coast Guard has confirmed the incident but, for the time being, it can’t speak on the circumstances surrounding it – and for very good reason, since an investigation into the cause is still underway.

The good news is that the five people onboard the vessel were rescued by the Coast Guard and transported to safety. The other piece of good news is that Coast Guard personnel was able to contain the superyacht with a floating sea wall, and there have been no reports of pollution as of the time of press. Given the location of the wreck, it is very likely that a recovery operation will be attempted.

The captain called in for help after running aground, as the ship started taking on water. Shortly afterwards, 007 listed on the port side, and eventually capsized. Photos and videos have emerged on social media showing the extent of the damage, and you will find some of them included in this article.

007 is a 49-meter (160-foot) superyacht that wasn’t available for charter, but was often described as the perfect family boat. Initially delivered as a 32-meter (105-footer) under the name Royal Enterprise, at the Bodrum shipyard in Turkey, it’s been through several refits, which have contributed to its current explorer-like, more aggressive silhouette. These refits included a lengthening of the hull to 49 meters (160 feet), adding another deck, and a small touch-and-go helipad on top.

With a design by Yavuz Mete, 007 offered accommodation for 10 guests and 5 crew. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines that developed a total of 1,300 hp, it could travel at a top speed of 12 knots (13.8 mph / 22.2 kph). None of that matters now, as it’s come to what could possibly be its end on the rocky shore of Greece.

A 49-metre (147-foot) Aegean superyacht known as 007 reportedly sunk in Greece this morning. The incident, which took place last night and into this morning, occurred off of the Greek island of Kythnos.

The superyacht 007 ran aground on Friday evening, causing an inflow of water that gradually tilted the vessel.

The coastguard answered mayday calls and discovered the vessel in a semi-submerged state, though the five passengers on board were not in danger and were quickly rescued.

The yacht has now been stabilised by the coastguard in an almost fully submerged state. An initial investigation of the incident is now also being carried out at the Port of Kythnos.

A statement from the coastguard read, “In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos was informed by the Unified Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue LS-EL.AKT., that the yacht "007" of the flag of Great Britain, has run aground in the sea area of Kolones Bay, Kythnos with five foreign passengers.”

The superyacht 007 was launched as Amazon A by Turkish shipyard Aegean Yacht in 2006. She was originally 32m (104ft) in length but has since undergone at least two major extensions, to a length of approximately 49m (147ft).

A superyacht named ‘007’ has suffered a dramatic sinking in Greece.

It doesn’t, at first glance, appear to be a scene from a new James Bond film, but instead an unlucky coincidence.

The 150ft vessel ran aground off the island of Kythnos on Friday night.

According to local reports, five people onboard were rescued by Coast Guard and transported to safety.

The luxury yacht, which has a helipad, was seen lying semi-submerged on its side about 50ft from Kolona Beach.

Anti-pollution barriers have been put in place in case of fuel leakage.

A local boat owner said: ‘They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom.

According to SuperyachtNews.com , the Coastguard said the vessel was ‘half-submerged’ by the time rescuers arrived on the scene.

A spokesperson said: ‘The passengers, all in good health, were transferred to a support boat and then taken to the port of Merihas.

‘The port of Kythnos is conducting a preliminary investigation, and no pollution of the marine environment has been observed since the incident.’

Megayacht '007' in griechenland gesunken.

Specifications

This grand yacht’s superstructure is built in aluminum with three teak decks. She is a monohull yacht with a displacement configuration. 

Her original length was 32 meters, and her overall length is now 49 meters. She has a beam of 8 meters, a draught of 3.65 meters, and a gross tonnage of 400 GT.

She can comfortably cruise at 10 knots but can reach a maximum speed of 12 knots.

Her water tanks store around 12,000 liters of fresh water for everyone’s consumption, while her fuel tanks can store up to 13,000 liters.

She is propelled by twin screw propellers and makes use of twin reliable Caterpillar diesel engines with a total of 1300 horsepower or 969 kilowatts.

007 is currently registered under the United Kingdom flag, the 4th most popular flagship for superyachts, with a total of 832 yachts registered. Additionally, she is in the top 30% by LOA in the world.

In einer scheinbar endlosen Reihe von Katastrophengeschichten in diesem Jahr ist eine 49-Meter-Superyacht – bekannt als 007 – ist gekentert und befindet sich nun halb unter Wasser in Griechenland, 15 m vor der Küste, und wartet auf die Bergung (2. September 2022).

Nach Angaben der griechischen Küstenwache wurden fünf Passagiere gerettet. Keiner wurde verletzt. Der Vorfall ereignete sich in Kolona Bay, Kythnos.

Medienberichten zufolge lief die Superyacht am Freitagabend auf Grund und verursachte einen Wassereinbruch, der das Schiff allmählich kippte.

Spirit Yachts’ brand partnership with EON Productions, Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM), and Universal Pictures International on the James Bond films began when a Spirit 54 was chosen to feature in the 2006 film Casino Royale .

This year, Spirit Yachts returns to the big screen alongside 007 in the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die .

The scene portraying Daniel Craig and Eva Green cruising into Venice onboard a Spirit 54 is now world famous. Having been handcrafted by Spirit Yachts’ skilled team of boat-builders in Suffolk, the yacht (a 54 foot design named Spirit) was shipped to the Bahamas. From there, Spirit Yachts sailed her to Puerto Rico and through the British Virgin Islands for filming. After shooting scenes in the Caribbean, the yacht was shipped to Croatia and sailed on to Venice. During filming in Venice, the yacht’s rig was taken in and out a total of 10 times to fit under multiple canal bridges. She was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in 300 years.

Omega James Bond Watch: The Seamaster Diver 300M “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” 50th Anniversary Edition

Released in 1969,  On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is something of a divisive film among James Bond enthusiasts. The only appearance of George Lazenby in the role of 007, it signaled the end of the Sean Connery era and is much darker than the other movies in the franchise. Having milked all it could out of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Omega needed something new to celebrate, and a new Bond watch – an Omega Seamaster 300m to commemorate the 50th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (OHMSS) is a timely reminder that in addition to astronauts, Omega is also the preferred timekeeper of a certain secret agent.

In fact, we’ve always considered Lazenby to be somewhat underrated, and we’re even willing to overlook the fact that in the actual film he wore a Rolex “Pre-Daytona” chronograph ref. 6238, as this was well before Omega’s partnership with Bond producer EON Productions came into play in 1995.

A New James Bond Watch

Onto the new James Bond watch: the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is not frequently celebrated as Omega’s most attractive timepiece, but the new Bond watches may yet claim their place in horological history someday. Sized at 42mm and crafted in stainless steel, it’s limited to 7,007 pieces and features a black ceramic dial with a spiral-brushed gun barrel design in homage to the Bond movies’ opening credits.

A slightly less understated touch is an 18K yellow gold plate on the side of the case at 9 o’clock that is engraved with the piece’s limited edition number. 18K yellow gold was also used on the hands and indexes, including the unique marker at 12 o’clock which was inspired by the Bond family coat-of-arms – a reference to Lazenby’s cover as a heraldic scholar in the movie. Another fairly subtle touch is the use the classic “007” font for the 7’s that appear in the date window at 6 o’clock.

And most subtle of all is a “hidden” numeral ’50’ inside the 10 o’clock index which only appears in the dark as it is rendered in Super-LumiNova – a reference to the 50th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The watch comes presented on a black rubber strap in a black box that is adorned with gun barrel patterns, gold 007 logos, and bullet-shaped buttons. Also included is a metal bracelet and a leather-trimmed travel case embossed with the Bond family coat of arms and the legend “We Have All The Time In The World” – a somewhat morbid reference to the film wherein Bond’s wife Tracy is murdered at the end.

Omega President and CEO, Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann calls the watch “A fitting tribute to a classic Bond film and one of cinema’s most iconic characters. This extraordinary watch is elegant, full of surprises, and sure to be extremely popular with collectors and fans of the character, due to its many Bond-related features.” We shall see.

Atlantic Cup: eine US-Crew und sieben europäische Duos

Eine vielseitige herausforderung, erst flaute, dann rückenwind, historischer deutscher sieg vor 12 jahren.

Insgesamt rund 1050 Seemeilen gilt es im Atlantic Cup zu meistern. Mit drei Etappen bietet die 2011 durchgestartete Class40-Prüfung ihren Teilnehmern ein abwechslungsreiches Rennen. Acht Zweihand-Crews nehmen die Herausforderung bei der siebten Auflage von Amerikas einziger Offshore-Regatta für Class40-Yachten an. Eine Handvoll mehr gemeldeter Crews hatten es aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht über den Atlantik zum Start geschafft. Der Startschuss zum einzigen US-Segelmarathon, der seine Teilnehmer an Cape Hatteras und Cape Cod vorbeiführt, fällt am 25. Mai in Charleston in South Carolina.

Das Feld ist bei der ersten Auflage seit 2018 klein, aber fein: Namhafte Class40-Crews wie die Franzosen Erwan Le Draoulec und Tanguy Leglatin auf dem Verdier-Entwurf “Everial” und Jules Bonnier und Julie Simon auf dem Manuard-Design “Nestenn - Entrepreneurs Pour La Planete”, der Italiener Alberto Riva und Jean Marre auf der “Acrobatica” oder William Mathelin-Moreau mit Pietro Luciani auf “Dékuple” nehmen am amerikanischen Ostküstenrennen teil. Sowohl “Acrobatica” als auch “Dékuple” stammen aus dem Design-Büro von Gianluca Guelfi.

Mit den acht Crews nehmen Segler aus Frankreich, Italien, Deutschland und den USA am Atlantic Cup teil. Unter der Flagge der gastgebenden Amerikaner starten Mike Hennessy und sein Co-Skipper Roger Junet ins Class40-Kräftemessen. Ihr Boot “Scowling Dragon” ist ein Owen-Clarke-Neubau aus diesem Jahr.

Die Herausforderung ist spannend: Die erste Etappe führt das Feld von Charleston über 708 Seemeilen ins legendäre Newport auf Rhode Island, wo das Herz des amerikanischen Segelsports besonders laut schlägt. Am 1. Juni geht es weiter über 249 Seemeilen nach Portland in Maine. Dort sind die Crews im Finale am 5. und 6. Juni noch beim abwechslunsgreichen Coastal Racing in zwei Tagesrennen gefordert. Melwin Fink und Lennart Burke wollen ihr Verdier-Design von 2022 auf der anderen Atlantik-Seite in neuen Gefilden gegen die starke Konkurrenz testen. Der Startschuss zum Atlantic Cup fällt am Samstag um 12 Uhr mittags Ortszeit (18 Uhr deutscher Zeit).

Am Vorabend des Regattastarts blickten Melwin Fink und Lennart Burke dem Atlantic Cup in Charleston gut vorbereitet entgegen. “Das Wetter ist schön hier, die Atmosphäre entspannt. Wir wollen natürlich vorne mit dabei sein sein, möchten die Regatta schon gerne im ersten Drittel beenden”, sagte Melwin Fink. Als stärkste Boote nannte Fink “Everial” und “Acrobatica”, sagte aber auch: “Alle, die hier antreten, sind gut. Wir kennen nur die Amerikaner nicht wirklich. Die schreiben aber auf ihrer Hompage, dass sie gerne gewinnen wollen.”

Die ersten 24 Stunden der ersten Etappe wird dem kleinen, aber feinen Feld gleich einiges Kopfzerbrechen bereiten: Bei flauen Winden und Gegenstrom stellt sich für die Crews die Frage, ob sie in Küstennähe oder raus auf See in Richtung Golfstrom gehen. “Wir müssen uns erst durch die Flaute schieben. Danach sollten wir fast das ganze Rennen Downwind- oder Reaching-Bedingungen haben. Das ist gut für uns”, erklärte Melwin Fink.

Die Wetterprognose ist vielversprechend. Für den weiteren Verlauf der ersten Etappe rechnnen die Crews mit weitgehend angenehmen Bedingungen. Melwin Fink sagt: “An Wind erwarten wir in den dreieinhalb bis vier Tagen der ersten Etappe maximal 20, oder auch mal 25 Knoten. Die meiste Zeit wird es weniger sein. Richtiges Geballer wird es also nicht. Und damit sind auch keine riesigen Etmale, aber sicher ein schönes und spannendes Rennen zu erwarten.” Melwin Fink bereitet die “Sign for Com” bereits seit einer Woche in Charlston vor, während Lennart Burke noch in Deutschland war und einige Ausrüstungsteile mitgebracht hat. Für beide kann der Startschuss am Samstag kommen.

Einen bekannten deutschen Vorgänger haben der 22-jährige Melwin Fink und sein vier Jahre älterer Teamkamerad Lennart Burke im Atlantic Cup. 2012 hatten der Hamburger Jörg Riechers und sein Co-Skipper Ryan Breymaier den Atlantic Cup mit “Mare” gewonnen. Schon damals war übrigens Mike Hennessy – in dem Fall mit Christopher Museler – das Rennen wie schon die Atlantic-Cup-Premiere 2011 mit einer “Dragon” bestritten.
