Yacht Crew Training

Yacht crew training courses, deckhand career courses.

These group of courses are aimed to equip an individual with the right knowledge and licenses to enter the Super Yacht Industry.

We will cover everything from how to enter the industry right through to getting the licenses that you would require to secure your first position.

The Deckhand courses are a great introduction into the industry and provides a well-balanced introduction. The industry requires many qualifications and experience which are gained over time. These courses will give you the edge when looking for employment.

Deckhand / Interior / Engine

There is a demand for crew to have a wide range of skills, this can be useful on smaller vessels where everyone helps out from time to time. So consider gaining experience / courses / qualifications in other departments. We can supply many related courses from Kite and dive instructors to food hygiene certificates

Deckhand – Minimum

• SRC VHF/SRC Radio
• RYA Powerboat Level 2
• RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency

• STCW 95 – 5 Modules

This really is the minimum required and you need to have prior experience in the marine world such as Dive Instructor, Charter boat operator to succeed with this course.

Starting salaries can be R40,000 a month with accommodation and food included.

We provide the courses to help you understand the high levels of service, professionalism and dedicated duty required for interior yacht crew.

The following topics are covered extensively in the  Superyacht Stewardess   course:

Interior introduction – The Interior Introduction module is a 3-day basic course. This training is an introduction to job roles of interior crew members.  It outlines all the important responsibilities of a Steward/ess as well as yacht etiquette and safety.

• Demographics of the industry, different types of yachting, life at sea being on a professional yacht.
• Guidelines on how to enter the industry (CV, visas, where to go, when to go, looking for a job, interviewing, crew contracts, salary expectations and crew agents)
• The departments onboard a yacht as well as the role of the interior department and your role as a Steward/ess.
• Personal presentation, correct dress and punctuality, communication and behaviour, verbal and written communication and body language
• How to interact with guests and awareness of cultural differences, such as guests from USA, Britain, Russia, Asia, etc.
• Yacht Interior Housekeeping, Pre-guest checklists, Steward/ess Scheduling and Rotations
• Garbage/Rubbish disposal, Cabin cleaning and detailing, Cleaning caddy. Yacht interior surfaces – do’s and don’ts, Yacht interior fabrics – care and handling, Laundry labels, Crew and guest laundry. Washing machine, tumble drying and ironing, the correct way to treat various linens, ironing, folding and presenting laundered garments.
• Yacht safety, Hazards in the interior, the correct use of cleaning chemicals as well as MSDS and Hazard Symbols.

Don McKee began his career at sea in 1999 as race crew on 1987 America's Cup 12 Meter sailing yachts in the Caribbean, and left the industry in 2014 after having working his way from Deckhand to Chief Officer and Captain on yachts up to 90m in length.  YOA Super yacht training and YOA yacht crew  are founded with the intention of improving the standard of crew training as well as placement.

ENG1 MEDICAL It is mandatory for anyone working onboard a boat to have an ENG1 seafarer medical fitness certificate whether you are a seafarer; in charge of a ship or are serving on a merchant ship or yacht. How to Choose a Yacht Crew Training School in South Africa

There are a number of schools around the world offering basic training courses for yacht crew, but not all are internationally recognised. This is important, as you don’t want to spend money doing a certification that won’t be relevant for the waters you will potentially crew in.

When choosing a place from which to get your yacht crew training, the most important accreditation to look out for is whether they are ITY (International Yacht) and MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) certified. Great news for South Africans wishing to pursue a career in the luxury yacht industry is that Get Onboard is  partnered with the only internationally ITY and MCA certified yacht crew training academy in South Africa .

Courses for Newbies

There are a bunch of areas you could qualify in, be that cooking (chefs), attending (stewards) or fixing (deckhands/engineers), but before you can specialise, every single yachtie needs the following two items under their belts:

The first is a medical certificate that states you are cleared, and fit to be at sea and called the  ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate . You can typically obtain the certificate from MCA Approved Doctor (AD) and this certificate is also mandatory before you’re allowed to complete your STCW course.

The second is the  STCW 2010  which is a compulsory requirement for any seafarer in order to be eligible for employment at sea. You can apply for the STCW training through us, as well as more advanced courses like the  Deckhand Course  or the  Interior Crew Training  course.

Where to do these in South Africa

Because these courses are internationally certified, you don’t have to leave the country in order to complete your basic training. This at least gives you extra time to prepare things like your  yacht CV  and choose where you’d like to  kick-start your yachting career from . You can choose whether to complete the  STCW Course in Durban or Cape Town  as well as other more advanced courses. Sailors en route to Cape Town plucked from life raft in deep-sea rescue

Ship diverted to pick up life raft.

Two sailors were rescued and one is presumed drowned after their yacht sank about 2,400km southwest of Cape Town this week, the South African Maritime Safety Authority has confirmed.

The sailors were rescued on Wednesday from a life raft after swift intervention by South Africa’s Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre which requested a passing ship, the FRONT POLLUX, to divert its course to the accident location. The yacht, NINA POPE, had been on its way to Cape Town from Tristan da Cunha, Samsa said on Friday.

“Despite challenging conditions, with winds up to 74km/h and sea swells of up to eight metres, the FRONT POLLUX managed to recover two male survivors from a life raft near the reported position,” it said. “Unfortunately, a third seafarer, the skipper of the NINA POPE and a German national, could not be saved and is presumed to have gone down with the vessel.

“The survivors, one with dual Swiss/US citizenship and the other Brazilian, have since communicated with their respective embassies in Cape Town, facilitated by the FRONT POLLUX. Both individuals did not require medical assistance and are currently en route to Cape Town. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) emergency operations centre (EOC) is assisting with their arrival early next week.”

Samsa commended the various stakeholders involved for a remote rescue under difficult circumstances.
