S.S. Bon Voyage in Libourne, France

About Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld—the world’s best and most awarded luxury river cruise line—offers itineraries in spectacular destinations throughout Europe, Egypt, Asia, and Peru. Our fleet features luxurious ships with an average capacity of 120 guests, one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the river cruise industry, enticing shore excursions, world-class gourmet cuisine, impeccable hospitality, and the highest degree of all-inclusive benefits on the rivers.

The Highest Standards in Luxury River Cruising

In 2004, Uniworld was acquired by The Travel Corporation (TTC), a highly successful international travel group founded by Stanley Tollman. TTC has 40 top brands, including Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, and Contiki, as well as Red Carnation Hotels, a renowned collection of four- and five-star luxury properties.

Combining the tour planning and hotel management expertise of TTC’s sister companies with Uniworld’s decades of superior nautical experience has created an entirely new category of luxury river cruising. Together, we’ve made major investments in our ships, crew, and staff, with an eye towards providing guests with all the elements of an unforgettable experience: Outstanding Service; The Most All-Inclusive Amenities; One-of-a-Kind Ships; Carefully Curated Experiences; Culinary Excellence; Wellness; and a Commitment to Sustainability.

The Boutique Experience, Onboard & Onshore

The guiding visionary behind our boutique philosophy is Beatrice “Bea” Tollman, founder of Red Carnation Hotels. Bea was named Hotelier of the Year at the European Hospitality Awards in 2012 and was inducted into The British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2019.

Bea and her creative team amplify the definition of boutique luxury with every new and updated ship. Our river cruises allow guests to travel from one exciting destination to the next aboard a stylish floating hotel with chic lounges, panoramic restaurants, sumptuous cuisine, exquisite antiques, original art, and luxurious riverview staterooms and suites. Meticulous attention to detail is readily apparent on every company-designed ship, including 12 members of Uniworld’s stunning Super Ship fleet—the S.S. Antoinette , S.S. Beatrice , S.S. Victoria , S.S. Elisabeth , and S.S. Maria Theresa in Central Europe; the S.S. Catherine , S.S. Joie de Vivre , and S.S. Bon Voyage in France; the S.S. La Venezia in Italy; the S.S. São Gabriel in Portugal; the S.S. Sphinx in Egypt, and the Mekong Jewel in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Gracious and Attentive Service

Uniworld takes pride in its long-lasting relationships with guests, for whom there is “No request is too large, No detail too small.” Uniworld employs a dedicated crew, professionally trained to the highest standards of service, so guests never have to worry about being well taken care of during their journeys.

Note: Beverage policy varies in Asia, India, Egypt, and Peru.

S.S. Antoinette

When you step aboard the S.S. Antoinette, you'll understand why the "S.S." precedes "Antoinette," as this appropriately means "Super Ship." Aboard ship, the ambiance is reminiscent of France's Château de Versailles during the late 18th century, with the character of the past thoughtfully blended with unusual touches to create a feeling of luxury, warmth and elegance. A blue Strauss 10-foot Baccarat chandelier with huge sapphires, originally hung in New York's famed Tavern on the Green, graces the two-story lobby. Fine Brazilian marble adorns the walls and floors, and a sparkling 19th-century Venetian glass mirror rests high above the reception desk, providing an air of grandeur. The S.S. Antoinette shares the same exquisite standards and meticulous attention to detail reflective throughout Uniworld's fleet. Haute design with comfortable décor symbolize the style and grace for which Uniworld ships are known.

uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. Beatrice

The S.S. Beatrice boasts yacht-style light wood with blue and white finishes throughout, a renovated lobby featuring elegant mirrors, marble floors, a white Murano chandelier with blue shades and a grand staircase made of nickel and black iron—a signature design element of Uniworld’s Super Ships. The ship’s redesigned lounge features sofas and chairs with hand-made upholstery, a parquet floor and upholstered ceiling panels, solar shades and new USB ports allowing guests to charge anywhere they are sitting. The artwork throughout the ship includes pieces from Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Pino Signoretto.

uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. Bon Voyage

With her transformation, the S.S. Bon Voyage will debut a completely different look—including a redesigned top deck with an added swimming pool and lounge area, with an adjacent casual dining venue featuring lighter fare with a local spin and chef-led cooking classes. Inside, four new gorgeously-appointed suites will be introduced, as well as marble bathrooms throughout the ship, an enhanced dining room with an added chef demonstration area, and a new bistro inspired by Bouillon Pigalle in Paris. All finished perfectly in the unique and beautiful design aesthetic that Uniworld is known for, and paired with the addition of more crew members for a higher crew-to-guest ratio.

The Salon de Toulouse features a full-service bar and curated antiques from renowned auction houses. Enticing dining venues include Le Restaurant Pigalle, Bistro Saint-Germain and Café Flore. Intimately scaled so it can dock in the heart of Paris, the Joie de Vivre features two Royal Suites, eight Junior Suites, and 54 staterooms, all with made-to-order Savoir® of England beds and marble-lined bathrooms.

uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. La Venezia

The beautifully reimagined S.S. La Venezia brings guests an enhanced luxury experience inspired by Northern Italy. The redesign of the S.S. La Venezia drew influence from the fine Fortuny fabrics displayed prominently onboard. Murano glass, gilded accents and artistic etched elements pay homage to popular Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century, creating an onboard atmosphere that is at once elegant and nostalgic.

uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. Maria Theresa

Lavishly appointed and meticulously designed the S.S. Maria Theresa features luxurious accommodations and numerous personal touches, ensuring a truly indulgent and unforgettable voyage. Named in honor of one of the Habsburg Empire's most beloved rulers, the magnificent S.S. Maria Theresa cruises the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers in grand Uniworld fashion.

uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. Sphinx

4.5 of 5 stars

As the only luxury river cruise ship in Egypt, S.S. Sphinx will offer three gourmet dining venues, including a private dining room and an al fresco dining experience on the upper deck, a swimming pool, massage room and 42 gorgeously appointed suites. uniworld riverboat cruises

S.S. Victoria

S.S. Victoria joins our European fleet in 2024 with an ambiance of contemporary luxury and features the largest suites on the rivers of Europe. Two Royal Suites onboard offer an incredible 506 square feet each. Reserve the adjoining standard Suite next door, and that turns into 759 square feet total, with two bedrooms connected by a separate living room. All the Suites and Signature French Balconies offer abundant space—much higher than standard—with ultra-comfortable, water-facing beds dressed in Uniworld’s fine custom linens.

Uniworld Reviews: What To Expect During Your River Cruising

By: Author Dan Bagby

Posted on Published: September 11, 2023

If you’ve ever taken an interest in going on a river cruise, one of the standout providers may have been Uniworld. Offering boutique river cruises across a huge range of destinations, Uniworld boasts outstanding service and a luxury experience for all its guests.

uniworld riverboat cruises

With 18 gorgeous river cruise ships, each built to blend seamlessly with the region they travel to, and a selection of great itineraries across a range of amazing destinations worldwide, Uniworld River Cruises is a major operator within the river cruising industry. Founded in 1976, this California-based cruise company has a strong presence not only in North America but for those who enjoy cruising all around the globe. They have a strong customer base and strive to provide new and exciting cruises to their long-time customers.

Whether you’re new to river cruising, or just checking out Uniworld as an option for a future river cruise, you may be wondering what to expect when traveling with them. To help you out, we’ve done the legwork for you, researching forums, review boards, and various cruise websites to bring you everything people love (and some of the things they don’t) about traveling with Uniworld, so you can get all the information you need before you book that dream getaway.

Uniworld River Cruises Cost

Whilst at first blush, Uniworld cruises seem to be quite pricey, they’re actually very good value.

Uniworld cruises are all-inclusive and cost, on average, somewhere between $2000 and $4000 per person, depending on the length of the cruise, the itinerary, and the time of year you plan on traveling. Having everything included for this price actually makes them excellent value as a provider of boutique luxury cruises, as can they include everything from flights to overseas transfers to personal butler service, alongside unlimited premium beverages and inclusion of all gratuities, three splendid meals a day and even Uniworld exclusive personalized excursions.

uniworld riverboat cruises

If you’re looking to keep costs low, however, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. Holiday and themed cruises, for example, tend to be a bit pricier than a standard river cruise. So if you’re not set on going on a themed river cruise, it’s much better to keep costs low by going on a standard Uniworld River Cruise.

Uniworld Cruise Experience

Uniworld ships and itineraries are designed to truly blend in with the rivers they are designed for. From stunning French interiors aboard the S.S. Joie de Vivre which cruises the stunning rivers of France, to the iconic hand-painted murals aboard the Ganges Voyager II which cruises through India.

There’s a great range of activities and entertainment options available onboard, as well as a great range of dining options to enjoy.

Uniworld is a great option if you’re planning on staying a little longer in a certain city either before your cruise commences, or at the end of your trip. This is because the company allows you to truly make the most of your getaway by offering guests the option to extend their getaway by adding accommodation for a few extra days in a variety of amazing historic cities all across the world.

Be sure to adhere to the onboard dress code in all areas of the ship.

Uniworld Cruise Food & Drink Review

As Uniworld fares are all-inclusive, guests can enjoy a great range of food and drink options aboard their ship at no extra cost! Uniworld offers unlimited drinks including fine regional beers and wines, as well as handcrafted cocktails made with premium spirits.

uniworld riverboat cruises

Another great feature aboard Uniworld is that menus are inspired by the region you’re visiting and prepared with local ingredients. Although menus are pre-planned to match up with the destinations, they can still be adapted to suit dietary requirements or preferences, so long as you provide enough notice before sailing.

Uniworld Cruise Entertainment & Onboard Activities

Since river cruises only travel short distances between destinations, guests typically spend most of their time on land exploring, eating on board, or sleeping, so there isn’t much need for onboard activities. That said, there’s a great selection of onboard libraries and lounges across the fleet, where guests can relax with a good book or chat with fellow guests on the journeys between destinations.

After arriving at a new destination, guess can enjoy guided walking tours, try some local cuisine, or visit local landmarks.

If you’re planning on traveling with Uniworld, you may be pleased to know that you’ll get the opportunity to enjoy exclusive access to a range of museums and popular landmarks without the regular tourist crowds, thanks to their after-hours tours. There’s also a great variety of fun nights out to be had in the cities boasting great nightlife scenes, such as Prague and Amsterdam, which are pre-planned by the company to ensure everyone has a great time whilst staying safe.

Whilst Uniworld only offers river cruises, most of which are more tailored towards the enjoyment of adults, both young and old , Uniworld also offers a variety of family cruises, which place emphasis on catering to a great getaway filled with family fun. With the family-friendly cruises, you can enjoy movie nights, game rooms, complimentary bike hire for use on land, and even kids menus at the dinner tables.

Family cruises also offer onboard cultural activities aimed at young cruisers and teenagers, such as classes where they can learn to cook dishes or learn the language of the local region they are traveling in.

What Guests Liked Most About Cruising With Uniworld

Reviews for Uniworld are generally very good, with an overall rating of 4.3 / 5 on CruiseCritic.

Guests generally enjoyed experiencing regions fully and surrounding themselves with like-minded people on their vacation. Many reviewers stated that their experience traveling with Uniworld was fabulous and amazing and that the guided tours taken with Uniworld whilst on-shore were fun, relaxed, and informative.

Guests commented on how attentive the staff were, with fast, friendly, and professional service from both the wait staff and the bar staff.

What Guests Didn’t Like About Cruising With Uniworld

As most of the reviews for Uniworld are very good, there are only a few issues that seem to be a common theme with guests.

A lot of guests were unhappy with how much travel time was done onboard a bus, be this to and from activities and excursions, or even to meet the boat at a port if the ship was delayed.

Some guests also complained of large groups onboard dominating the limited spaces on the excursions, however, this is not a common issue.

Discovering India on Uniworld’s Exclusive River Cruise

The luxury cruise line has developed a collection of India sailings to immerse guests in the nation's spiritual history.

By Becca Hensley

Ganges River

Perhaps we’ve all felt it: that nagging urge for change, redefinition, new pathways and deeper understandings. That’s when India calls. A vastly resplendent country, prodigiously textured, outrageously technicolored, spellbindingly ancient, ever welcoming and mysterious; it manages to be both a gloriously indulgent sensory overload and a calmingly clear connection to that proverbial search for the meaning of life.

If a quiet ashram — read: monastery — for the study of yoga, chakras and the centuries-old science of Ayurveda seems too extreme for your next transformational travel adventure, boutique Uniworld has something to suit. With the mission to navigate the complex country with clarity, Uniworld has developed a collection of India sailings to immerse guests in the nation’s heart-opening yoga and spiritual history while exploring a panoply of monuments, foods, sights and unique experiences .

Aboard Uniworld’s India river cruise , guests can take advantage of an exclusive wellness program that offers twice daily yoga classes with an onboard dedicated yogi, holistic living workshops, one-on-one meditation and yoga practices, and daily Indian-focused, educational seminars that unveil the mysteries of an alternative approach to well-being. All the while, guests will be visiting once-in-a-lifetime locales such as the Taj Mahal; staying in the country’s most luxurious hotel ; relaxing in palatial staterooms during the sail; tasting the country’s tempting culinary offerings; and cruising on the sacred Ganges River past villages full of artisans schooled in techniques passed from generation to generation.

maharaja suite uniworld river cruises

Uniworld has received many accolades for its boutique hotel-evoking ships, floating inns envisioned and designed to reflect the destination. Ganges Voyager II conjures elements of a Maharajah-era palace , its hand-painted murals, glittering bits of gold, sumptuous fabrics and white-gloved staff exuding regal appeal. Only 28 commodious suites compose the ship, with space for no more than 56 guests.

Each suite encompasses a stately sitting area, a French balcony with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a generous bathroom complete with a rain shower and high-end bath products. For the ultimate floating sanctuary, book the sumptuous Maharaja Suite, a 400-sq-ft haven featuring hand-carved furnishings, opulent Indian textiles and a deep soaking tub.

The itinerary: india’s golden triangle & the sacred ganges.

Ganges Voyager II, Uniworld River Cruise India

This soulful 13-day expedition begins in New Delhi, part of the touristic circuit known as the Golden Triangle. The area, historically home to India’s princely rulers, also includes Jaipur (the Pink City) and Agra (anchored by the never-disappointing Taj Mahal). Choose the optional, pre-trip bookend stay in Rajasthan’s vibrant Udaipur , known as the City of the Lakes — today one of India’s top sites for elaborate weddings.

Led by exceptional guides, you’ll revel in a world of gem-colored saris, elephants, monkeys, quixotic markets, aromatic scents and historical forts. On day six, fly to Kolkata, board the Ganges Voyager II, and begin your sail on the Ganges. Along the way, the river’s banks teem with timeless vistas, each direction offering captivating scenes of life.

In Kalna, you’ll see Hindu temples; in Matiari, you’ll meet brass craftsmen; and in the Bengali towns of Murshidabad and Baranagar, you’ll ride in a horse-drawn buggy for an architecture tour. You’ll learn about the art of henna in Khusbagh and about the Hare Krishna movement in Mayapur, once a French colonial outpost. You’ll end officially in Kolkata, famous for its flower market — but we suggest you add on Uniworld’s extension to Varanasi, the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus of all ages and a soul-stirring city.

CRUISING WITH UNIWORLD Portugal is just one of the many fascinating destinations that you can explore on a Uniworld Boutique River Cruise. The cruise line also plies the rivers in France, Italy, Spain and throughout Central Europe as well as in Peru, Egypt, India, Vietnam and Cambodia. THE SUPERLATIVE SAO GABRIEL The SS São Gabriel is one of Uniworld’s newer ships. Although it’s also one of its smallest with just 50 cabins, there are still several choices in stateroom sizes, including 16 suites that come with 24-hour butler service that includes anything from shining your shoes to unpacking and repacking your suitcase.     All food and beverages, including premium spirits, are included. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style, while dinners are full-service fine-dining experiences.  All meals include a variety of international and Portuguese dishes.     My favorite spot on the ship was the sprawling sun deck, which has a swimming pool and a mix of uncovered and shaded lounge chairs, couches and tables. There’s also a small spa and well-equipped fitness center.

These Are the Best Cruises for Solo Travelers

One writer actually prefers to travel solo on these cruises (even though she’s married). here are her favorite cruises for traveling on your own..

  • Copy Link copied

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is waiving its single supplement on numerous spring sailings—including in Bordeaux on the S.S. Bon Voyage.

Traveling alone can be tricky. I love the total independence, but even after decades of solo globe-trotting I still occasionally get that wistful “I wish I had someone to share this with” feeling.

Group tours, which many solo travelers opt for, ensure that you always have company. But it’s not always the company you’d choose, and the itineraries can feel a bit rigid at times. I often feel like I don’t have enough time to wander on my own when I’m traveling with a tour group.

That’s why I’ve fallen in love with small-ship cruising , which, in my opinion, offers the best of all worlds. In fact (and don’t tell my husband), I actually prefer traveling alone on small ships. Why? Because unlike on ships with thousands of passengers—many of whom you may never even encounter let alone get friendly with—it’s really easy to find like-minded travelers to socialize with. I have yet to travel on a small ship where I didn’t forge new and lasting friendships with fellow solo travelers, couples, and families alike.

Best of all, on cruises, the only schedule you have to follow is making sure you are back onboard by sailing time, so you can explore the destinations how you want to—alone or on a group excursion.

The downside, of course, is that dreaded solo supplement (when prices are based on double occupancy so you basically have to pay for two to get a private room). But with demand for solo cruising, particularly among women, on the rise, many cruise lines are responding with special sailings during which they either eliminate or reduce the upcharge for having your own cabin.

Here are five of our top picks for cruises for solo travelers.

1. Explore Sicily on Sea Cloud’s private yacht-style cruises

Suggested itinerary: Scenes of Sicily , June 24 to July 1, 2024, from $6,995 per person

Ever dream of traveling the world on a sailboat? Sailing aboard Sea Cloud’s three tall ships feels like having a friend with their own private yacht inviting you aboard. This year, Sea Cloud is waiving the single supplement on select sailings, including its “Scenes of Sicily” itinerary on Sea Cloud II , a sailing ship with a maximum capacity of 94 passengers. Set off under full sails for a round-trip journey from Malta, then circumnavigate the Italian island with stops at its premier ports for private yachts. Explore Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano; Ortigia’s ancient ruins and the baroque churches and palazzi of Noto; a private palazzo and the magnificent Cappella Palatina in Palermo; and the volcanic panorama of Taormina with its romantic alleys and flower-covered stairways. The intimate atmosphere on this small ship encourages getting to know your fellow passengers and crew. Most meals are served on the upper deck, with open seating for easy mingling.

2. A river cruise through French wine country with Uniworld

Suggested itinerary: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ eight-day Brilliant Bordeaux journey, starting at $2,999 per person

My first-ever small-ship experience was a European river cruise. And I was immediately hooked. While river cruises can conjure images of older retired couples on cookie-cutter boats, that is changing, thanks in part to river cruise lines like Uniworld Boutique River Cruises . Uniworld is a luxury river cruise line that stands out for its above-par service, ornately decorated ships, and top-notch local and regional cuisine and wine. The company says it has seen a 31 percent increase in solo travelers from 2019 to 2023—with a 61 percent increase in female solo travelers. In response, Uniworld is waiving the single supplement (through the end of April) on some of its most popular sailings, including one of my favorites: the wine-filled “Brilliant Bordeaux” journey along France’s Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde rivers aboard the recently revamped 124-passenger S.S. Bon Voyage . My favorite spot onboard is the Soleil Deck, complete with a blue-tiled infinity pool and open-air, casual French bistro-style cuisine. Uniworld offers an intimate and hassle-free travel experience for solo travelers. Fares are all-inclusive and cover airport transfers, daily excursion options, onboard entertainment, farm-to-table dining, and wine and spirits.

3. Sail the Caribbean with renowned luxury cruise line Crystal

Suggested itinerary: Crystal’s San Juan to San Juan , December 9 to 16, 2024, starting at $3,000 per person

Looking for a larger ship with more amenities? Crystal, one of the pioneers of luxury, all-inclusive ocean cruising, offers reduced fares for solo travelers on select sailings on the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony , including this preholiday Caribbean cruise that starts and stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico—with no other repeat ports, of course. Enjoy the sugar sand and clear waters of the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, and the British Virgin Islands. Onboard, there’s a swimming pool, pickleball courts, and some of the finest dining (and service) at sea. Both ships, which hold just over 700 passengers, have nine dining options, including the only Nobu restaurants at sea. With so many dining choices, bars, an extensive spa, and all the amenities of larger ships, solo travelers can easily find a place to mingle or relax on their own.

An aerial view of coastal Old Town Dubrovnik, with small harbor

When it comes to exploring a bustling port like Dubrovnik, solo travelers can either roam on their own or opt for a group excursion.

4. Explore the Croatian coast in style

Suggested itinerary: Cruise Croatia’s seven-night Dubrovnik to Split sailing, from $1,495 per person

If you want to go really small, Cruise Croatia operates a fleet of yachts that is increasingly attracting solo travelers, particularly women age 45 and up, according to the cruise line. And there are not many places more beautiful to sail than along the coast of Croatia . Wander the historic towns and take a plunge off the side of the yacht into the teal-blue, crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea on a Cruise Croatia sailing from Dubrovnik to Split on one of its two deluxe 38-passenger ships. The brand offers 8 to 10 supplement-free cabins for single guests on dedicated sailings. Once those are sold out, solo guests can get a cabin on a lower deck for 60 percent off the double fare. And next year, the company is planning to run two departures exclusively for solo travelers.

Six passengers on a Zodiac boat in the Galágapos

There’s constantly something to see or do when navigating the Galápagos.

Courtesy of Sven-Olof Lindblad/Lindblad Expeditions

5. An expedition cruise in the Galápagos

Suggested itinerary: The nine-night Galápagos aboard on National Geographic Endeavour II , starting at $6,605 per person

Expedition cruises by their nature tend to attract younger—or at least younger-minded—and more active cruisers. But they can also be pricey. For solo travelers willing to take a bit of a gamble, Lindblad Expeditions (which partners with National Geographic on its expedition cruises) will pair guests of the same gender together. If a roommate isn’t found, you’ll get the double-occupancy cabin at the singe rate. And the line’s culture is based on the belief that just because a guest is traveling solo doesn’t mean they are traveling alone. The voyages are designed to make traveling alone easy with open seating in the dining room and small exploration groups. On this classic 10-day Galápagos sailing , learn how to capture the best photos of giant turtles, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions from National Geographic photography expert Rich Reid. National Geographic Endeavour II has 52 outside cabins and suites, all with ocean views.

Editor's Note

Avalon Waterways is the latest river cruise line to launch sailings on the Douro.

The Denver-based brand on Thursday unveiled its first vessel on the vineyard-lined river in Portugal, which has been one of river cruising's fastest-growing destinations in recent years.

Dubbed Avalon Alegria, the 102-passenger ship will sail seven-night voyages on the Douro out of Porto, Portugal, starting next week.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Stops on the voyages will include the river towns of Regua, Pinhao and Pocinho, which serve as gateways for visits to the many wineries and historic sites that line the Douro River Valley.

Avalon executives unveiled Avalon Alegria on Thursday during a naming ceremony along the waterfront of Pinhao that included an appearance by former "Saturday Night Live" comedienne Cheri Oteri.

Oteri served as godmother of the vessel during the ceremony.

"It's like my wedding day. I've never been so honored and flattered," Oteri told nearly 100 invited guests at the start of the ceremony after being escorted into the event on the arm of an Avalon executive.

Sticking with the wedding analogy, the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated funny woman joked that "tonight, if the ship's a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'."

Later in the ceremony, Oteri cut a white ribbon that sent a bottle of sparkling Portuguese Cava smashing against Avalon Alegria's hull.

Avalon tapped Oteri to christen Avalon Alegria because of her work bringing happiness and joy into the world as a comedienne and actress, Avalon President Pam Hoffee said at the event.

"Alegria" means "happiness" in Portuguese, Hoffee noted.

"When we named our ship happiness ... we couldn't have thought of a better godmother than Cheri Oteri," Hoffee said.

The ceremony mostly took place inside the ship's main lounge due to pouring rain outside. It was followed by a reception and gala dinner on board.

Built at a shipyard in Portugal, Avalon Alegria is part of Avalon's popular Suite Class of ships, which began debuting in 2011 and features a large number of extra-wide cabins called Panorama Suites.

Related: Why I still think Avalon Waterways has the best cabins in river cruising

Avalon Alegria has 37 Panorama Suites, which offer 200 square feet of living space. That's about 30% more square footage than the standard river ship cabin.

Avalon has long touted the Panorama Suites as a key difference between its vessels and those of other river lines in Europe that cater to North Americans. The suites make up nearly 80% of the cabins on Avalon's Suite Class ships and have several unusual features. Among them: floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall panoramic windows that stretch 11 feet wide and open up 7 feet wide.

Founded in 2004, 20-year-old Avalon is known for a young fleet of ships with a stylish, contemporary design, and Avalon Alegria is no exception. Public areas feature modern furniture, clean lines and lots of glass walls that flood the spaces with light.

Among the standout features of Avalon Alegria is the line's first decktop pool.

Avalon Alegria is notably smaller than the typical Avalon ship, as it was designed specifically to fit into the locks and under the bridges that line the Douro River.

Like other river cruise lines that cater to North Americans, including AmaWaterways, Uniworld River Cruises and Viking, Avalon has grown notably over the past two decades. With the addition of Avalon Alegria, it now has 15 ships in Europe. It also operates one ship in Asia on the Mekong River.

Attendees at Thursday's unveiling included leaders of some of North America's biggest travel agency groups, local officials, the ship's designers and builders, and Avalon executives.

7 Best Wildlife Cruises Around the World

There’s a reason animal lovers flock to the open water—and a wildlife cruise provides the perfect vantage point.

Like a safari by sea, wildlife cruises let travelers admire animals in their natural habitats. Sometimes, it’s a top-deck dolphin spotting. Other times, it’s observing a distant polar bear. It’s about more than just  one  animal sighting, though. The best wildlife cruises include multiple unscripted fauna encounters—something I learned on a recent Galapagos eco-cruise with World Expeditions.

In just one week at sea, we snorkeled with sea turtles and sea lions, watched a blue-footed booby mating dance, visited a Galapagos giant tortoise breeding and rehabilitation center, and sat awestruck as a pint-sized Galapagos penguin mouth-fed her crying baby on the volcanic Bartolomé Island shore. Distant manta rays leaping during the ship’s sunset repositioning were a jaw-dropping cherry on top.

Sharing waterways with wildlife is awe-inspiring, but it comes with an important responsibility: protecting these pristine ecosystems. The cruise industry has a  notoriously large carbon footprint , but it’s slowly responding to travelers’ growing  sustainability demands . In 2022, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shared new eco-initiatives, including a push for net-zero carbon cruising by 2050. The industry still has  a long way to go , but some trailblazing brands have made impressive sustainability strides. Take Norwegian adventure company  Hurtigruten , which launched the first hybrid electric-powered cruise ship in 2019. It aims to launch a zero-emission ship by 2030.

From eco-conscious Arctic voyages to small-ship Galapagos trips expeditions, here are seven of the world’s best overnight wildlife cruises—including the species you’ll see, and measures the operator has in place to protect them.

Watch whales, polar bears, and musk oxen in the Arctic

Iceland, greenland, and canada — the northwest passage with hurtigruten.

Arctic fauna abounds throughout the northwest passage, a sea trail that links the Pacific and Atlantic via the Canadian Arctic. A  19-day northwest passage cruise with Hurtigruten covers a portion of this wild expanse, as well as the coasts of Greenland and Iceland. From Hurtigruten’s 318-person  MS Fram expedition vessel , you could spot musk ox, caribou, minke and humpback whales, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive polar bear. The trip’s excursions include RIB boat rides, hiking, and citizen science programs.

The trip’s vessel, MS Fram, promises relaxation and enrichment. There’s a science center to learn about Arctic geology, the ship’s gym to get a sweat in between excursions, or hot tubs to watch for wildlife while unwinding. The recently updated boat features two restaurants plus an outdoor barbecue. The 125 cabins and suites include four classes, from polar inside to top-deck expedition suites with sweeping window views.

While any travel to remote regions like the Arctic leaves a carbon footprint, cruising with Hurtigruten is perhaps the best responsible-travel option. The brand supports give-back projects globally, including programs that provide safe spaces for vulnerable children in Greenland. It was also the first company to ditch non-essential single-use plastic in 2018.

Admire rare species in the mighty Amazon

Peruvian amazon — peruvian rivers & rainforest discovery with uniworld.

Imagine gliding alongside pink dolphins in the Amazon River or eavesdropping on critter calls on a  night safari in the jungle. These are among the many experiences on  Uniworld’s Peruvian Amazon wildlife cruise . The 11-day trip winds from Iquitos, the Amazon’s largest city, to the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, where the powerful Amazon River begins. Excursions feature a host of bucket-list wildlife experiences, including jungle hikes and skiff-boat rides.

The trip’s 16-stateroom ship promises an intimate Amazon experience, with floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuite bathrooms and walk-in showers, spacious lounge areas, an observation deck, and a top-level hot tub. Families or groups can enjoy four interconnecting suites, while fully air-conditioned accommodations are a welcome treat. Five-star chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino whips up Peruvian delights in the vessel’s bright and airy dining area.

In recent years, Uniworld has made major sustainable wildlife cruising strides. It’s the  first river cruise line to share its sustainability objectives  and  its progress toward those goals. Eco-friendly initiatives include reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2025 and incorporating at least one  give-back experience per trip. The river-cruise brand also follows a strict  animal welfare policy.

Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin

Galapagos islands, ecuador — galapagos on solaris by world expeditions.

The  Galapagos Islands are a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. On a seven-day naturalist-led Galapagos cruise with  outfitter World Expeditions , you’ll become immersed in the rare flora and fauna, with the brand’s signature adventure twist. Guests can snorkel among sea turtles, sharks, and stingrays; hike by sunbathing sea lions; and visit the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Protection and Growing Centre.

On board, travelers can enjoy a rooftop deck for lounging, a dining area for buffet breakfast and lunch, and a plated dinner. The first-class Solaris yacht features a mix of queen-bed and single-bed cabins; all come with ocean views and private bathrooms. Travelers access the Galapagos for land-based outings via small RIB boats, with several hours on shore with two land stops per day.

Tourism to the Galapagos has more than quadrupled in the past two decades. While park officials enforce strict wildlife protection rules, including heavily regulated land visits, it’s important to keep your footprint as light as possible. A small-ship and carbon-offset trip, like this 16-passenger adventure, fits this criterion. The team also supports local communities by purchasing local fare, including seafood from local fishers and bread from an island baking cooperative.

Southeast alaska — ultimate glacier bay, wilderness, and wildlife with alaskan dream cruises.

People travel far and wide to enjoy the prolific fauna along Alaska’s Inside Passage, a wildlife-dense amalgam of fjords, glaciers, coastal towns, and an archipelago of more than 1,000 islands through the state’s panhandle. The best outfitter for taking it all in:  Alaskan Dream Cruises , the country’s only  Indigenous-owned cruise line .

If you’ve dreamed about whale watching in Alaska, sign up for the seven-night  Glacier Bay expedition , where you’ll not only admire the enormous creatures but listen to them communicate via the shipboard hydrophones. The adventure starts in mountain-flanked Sitka and ends in Juneau. Excursions include kayaking among cliffs and alongside rainforests, skiff-boat rides along the whale-abundant Glacier Bay, and later to watch puffins, sea lions, and, if you’re lucky, bears. The vessel,  Kruzof Explorer , includes six staterooms with windows and a main deck for wildlife scouting. This upcycled crab fishing boat has a central dining room and bar for gathering and plotting the next day’s activities.

Travelers can feel confident their trip supports the local community and ecosystem; Alaskan Dream Cruises runs small-ship outings (around 12 passengers per trip), offers no single-use plastics, and increasingly invests in solar panels for sustainable power.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

sights g elektrostal

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.

Do i need a visa to visit malta.

For travelers from many countries, accessing Malta as a visitor is very straightforward, putting the sunshine and history within easy reach. If you are also traveling to other countries around Europe as well as Malta, just remember to not go over the maximum number of days allowed for your visit to the Schengen area . Here's what you need to know about visas for Malta.

Who can enter Malta without a visa?

All citizens of the European Union are entitled to enter Malta and travel freely with a national identity card, except for travelers from Ireland, who must use an Irish passport card. At present, travelers from 63 countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States can also enter Malta and other countries in the Schengen area visa-free.

Travelers from visa-free countries will need a valid passport. The passport's expiry date must be at least 90 days after your confirmed departure date from Malta, and passports cannot be more than ten years old.

Who needs a tourist visa to enter Malta?

Malta is part of the Schengen area , a grouping of 26 European nations that issue a common visa allowing travelers a maximum stay of 90 days during any 180-day period. This is valid for travel across the Schengen Area.

Travelers from countries who cannot enter Malta visa-free must apply for a Schengen tourist visa in advance of travel – details are on the government's Identity Malta website . Information required for the application includes dates and details of transport arrangements to enter and exit the Schengen zone, proof of accommodation, and proof of financial means of support. The cost for the application is €80 for adults and €45 for children.

Extending a Schengen area visa

If you wish to stay in the Schengen area for longer than 90 days, it is possible to extend a Schengen visa, but extensions are granted rarely, and approval is usually only given for humanitarian reasons or because of force majeure (for example, a natural disaster in your home country). For longer stays in Malta specifically, you can apply for a National Visa – also known as a Long Stay or ‘D’ visa.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) rules for 2023

Under the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) – expected to go live from early 2023 – travelers from the 63 non-EU countries currently permitted visa-free entry to the Schengen area will need to complete an online application to confirm authorization to enter the Schengen zone.

There's a €7 fee and applications will take around ten minutes to complete online. Successful authorizations will be valid for three years, or for the remaining validity of the applicant's passport if it expires sooner. Note that a maximum stay in the Schengen area of 90 days across a 180-day period will still apply.

Post-Brexit travel from the UK to Malta

The UK departed from the European Union in 2020, but citizens of the UK are still permitted to enter the Schengen area without a visa, including to visit Malta. However, British travelers will need to complete an application via ETIAS once the system goes live.

What if I need to leave and re-enter the Schengen area?

Multiple-entry access to the Schengen area – enabling travelers to re-enter after exiting to non-Schengen countries – is usually granted automatically to visitors from the 63 visa-free countries. It's a convenient option for travelers from southern hemisphere countries such as Australia and New Zealand who also wish to visit popular non-Schengen zone destinations including the UK and Turkey.

When exiting and re-entering Malta and the Schengen zone, it's vital to still adhere to the maximum stay of 90 days across a 180-day period (this starts from the date you first enter the Schengen area).

COVID-19 rules for entry to Malta

As of May 9, 2022, wearing a mask in Malta is only mandatory on flights, or when visiting a hospital or care home for the elderly. While not mandatory, the Maltese government does still recommend masks are worn when attending large gatherings.

Travelers no longer need to complete a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) but must present either a vaccine certificate, a negative PCR test, or a COVID recovery certificate upon arrival. See Malta's Health Ministry website for the latest on COVID-19 regulations.

Malta Tourist Visa Fees & Costs in 2024

The Malta Tourist Visa Fees in 2024 are:

Malta Tourist Visa Application Fee

If you’re planning to visit Malta for tourism, to see family and friends, or to attend a conference, it’s essential to understand the associated visa fees. Below is a breakdown of the costs you can expect:

  • Visa Fee (in Euro): €80.00
  • Visa Fee (in GBP): £73
  • VFS Service Fee (in GBP): £27.38

The visa fee is the amount charged by the Maltese immigration authorities for processing your application. On top of this, if you’re applying through VFS Global, there’s a service fee, which covers the administrative and operational costs of handling your visa application.

Fee Waivers for Malta Tourist Visa

For travelers looking to explore Malta, it’s essential to understand the visa fee structure and potential waivers. The Maltese authorities provide several exemptions or discounts, ensuring inclusivity for various visitor categories:

Age-Based Waivers :

  • Children under 6 years old : Malta ensures that young travelers can explore its rich history and culture without any visa fees. Children below the age of 6 are exempted from the visa fee, though a service fee of €27.38 still applies.
  • Children between 6 and 12 years old : Young travelers falling in this age bracket are eligible for a reduced visa fee of €40.00, with a service charge of €27.38. In local currency, the visa fee is approximately €37.

Visa Fee Waivers For Nationals of Certain Countries

Travelers from countries that have a visa facilitation agreement with the European Union benefit from a preferential rate.

Nationals from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine are charged a visa fee of €35, with a service fee of €27.38.

Additional Visa Fee Waivers

  • Educational Trips : Organized groups of school pupils or students traveling to Malta for study or educational purposes and accompanied by their teachers are exempted from the visa fee. However, this applies only if they possess a formal invitation from an educational institution based in Malta. A service fee of €27.38 is still applicable.
  • Research Scholars : Scientific researchers hailing from third countries are encouraged to choose Malta for their scholarly pursuits. Recognizing the importance of academic research, Malta offers these scholars a visa fee waiver, while a service charge of €27.38 applies.
  • Non-Profit Organization Representatives : Malta values the contributions of the youth, especially when they participate in events that foster cultural, educational, or sports exchanges. Hence, representatives (up to 25 years old) from non-profit organizations who actively partake in conferences or events hosted by non-profit entities are granted a visa fee exemption. A service fee of €27.38 remains applicable.

Refund Policy on Unsuccessful Visa Applications

If your Malta tourist visa application is unsuccessful, you might wonder if you can get a refund on the visa fee. Typically, visa fees are non-refundable regardless of the application’s outcome.

Can I Visit Malta with UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

A UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) alone is not sufficient for entry into Malta for non-UK nationals. If you hold a BRP, you will still need to meet Malta’s visa requirements for your specific nationality.

It’s advisable to consult the Maltese embassy or consulate to understand the visa prerequisites.

However, if you’re a national of a visa-exempt country, your BRP may facilitate re-entry into the UK after your trip to Malta.

Is Malta Visa-Free for UK Residents?

UK passport holders are allowed to visit Malta for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) without a visa.

However, residency in the UK does not automatically grant visa-free entry; your eligibility is determined by your nationality.

Can I Travel to Malta with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) gives you the right to reside in the UK without any time limit, but it doesn’t grant you the same travel freedoms as a UK passport.

Similar to the BRP, if you have ILR status but hold a passport from a country that requires a visa to enter Malta, you’ll need to obtain a visa in advance.

ILR status may make it easier for you to return to the UK after visiting Malta, but it doesn’t change Malta’s visa requirements for your nationality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i get a refund if my visa application is denied.

No, visa fees are non-refundable. The fee covers the cost of processing your application, regardless of the outcome.

Are there any additional costs apart from the visa fee?

Yes, there might be additional costs for optional services like premium lounge access, form filling assistance, courier services, and if you choose to use a visa processing agency.

How can I pay the visa fee?

Accepted payment methods may vary, but typically include debit or credit card, bank transfer, and cash. Be sure to check the available payment options at your application center.

Do children also need to pay the visa fee?

Children under the age of 6 are exempt from the visa fee. Children aged between 6 and 12 are eligible for a reduced fee of €40.

Can the visa fee change due to currency value?

Yes, if you are paying from a country that does not use Euro, the fee you pay in your local currency will be subject to the current exchange rate, which can fluctuate.

Note that if you have already submitted your biometrics to the Schengen VIS (Visa Information System) in the past 5 years, you do not have to submit them again. The time taken to process the Maltese tourist permit depends on several factors such as the number of entries, the validity of your permit, the volume of application at the embassy, your previous travel history, and so on. As a result, it is suggested that you apply for it well in advance. Normally, it takes around 10-15 working days. However, this may even increase to 30 days in some cases, and may even take 60 days in certain extreme cases.

The fees for the process depends on the number of entries, the biometric charges, as well as any other service charges. It can also vary depending upon the currency exchange rates. It is, therefore, suggested that you check the exact amount before applying.

Once you have submitted the application at the VAC, the application is then forwarded to the Embassy of Malta in New Delhi. The VAC has no control over the processing. They are purely in charge of the administrative section of the visa application. The processing is done by the embassy alone. Once the permit has been approved, you can collect it directly from the VAC, or you can have it delivered to you for an additional charge.

After submission, you can do the Malta visa status tracking by visiting https://www.vfsvisaonline.com/Global-Passporttracking/Track/ and entering your reference number and date of birth. You may also contact your travel agency to know the status.

Once you have received the permit, you must keep in mind the following points to ensure that you have a pleasant experience.

  • Keep note of the expiry date, duration of stay, as well as the number of entries mentioned on the visa sticker. You must not stay longer than the permitted duration.
  • Carry all the travel documents before travelling. You will be denied entry into Malta without this.
  • Ensure that you travel to Malta within 6 months of the visa issue date, or as mentioned. After this date, your permit will become invalid and you will not be able to enter the country.
  • While you are travelling within the country, always carry a copy of your travel documents with you.
  • While you are on a tourist permit, you cannot take part in work.
  • You will not be able to extend the tourist visa under normal conditions
  • You can move freely within the Schengen zone. And depending on your entry type, you may enter or exit the Schengen as permitted.
