In the protected harbor of Deep Creek, WYCC is the best place to pursue your boating pleasures in Newport News.  We accommodate boats of all sizes and have the slip, lift or shed for you.  WYCC provides boat trailer parking, covered slips, open slips with and without lifts, and racks for members’ boats.   In 2022, WYCC installed a state of the art marine pump out for boaters.  

WYCC also welcomes transient boaters. A reservation must be made with the club manager in advance.

Since 1960, the Warwick Yacht and Country Club has been a beacon in the Newport News community of boaters and like-minded individuals who enjoy getting together and have a good time. Situated on Deep Creek at the junction of the James and Warwick River, the Clubhouse features a dining room, bar, and a topside party and a banquet facility for wedding receptions. For an intimate wedding on the water, the Warwick Yacht and Country Club may provide the perfect serene setting. The Club offers views of natural greenery and sets a lovely, calm ambiance for your beautiful exchange of vows. For a fun, celebratory evening with your family and friends on your special day, the Warwick Yacht and Country Club may offer the most wonderful experience.

There is no rental fee for the reception but there is a food and beverage minimum applied to all club and waterfront events. The venue allows 4 hours of event time excluding set up and clean up time. The fee for a wedding ceremony is $225 and includes an extra hour of event time. Additional hours can be arranged for a fee of $100/hr. A tent is required for outdoor receptions and when renting through the venue, there is a 10% discount. Tent rental ranges in starting price from $500 to $600. Please inquire with venue for pricing details.

Welcome to Poquoson Yacht Club!

   About our Club:

The Poquoson Yacht Club is a club of boating enthusiasts and good friends on the Virginia Peninsula. Our club building and pier are located at the end of Messick Road in Poquoson, Virginia, on the Back River opposite Langley Air Force Base (home of Air Combat Command), NASA Langley Research Center, and Hampton, Virginia.

The original club building was severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel. It was demolished and a new building was constructed on the same site.  The Club House is located just to the left of the photograph above--looking east from our parking lot--toward the confluence of Back River and the Chesapeake Bay.

 Our activities are mostly social, at our club on Messick Road. Boating activities begin in the Spring and last until our popular Lighted Boat Parade and Santa's arrival on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Many of our members own boats and participate in summer group trips around the Chesapeake Bay and occasionally the waters of North Carolina.

PYC welcomes new members. For information on becoming a member of the Poquoson Yacht Club, you can call the Membership Chairperson, Carol Wood, at 757-776-1963. Our initiation fee of $500.00  and reasonable annual dues make this club affordable to all (see current dues in application).

We have a regular Friday night snack bar and Happy Hour, where members enjoy pool , darts, TV, and just conversation, along with a home-cooked supper.

Four times during the year the club conducts a Membership Meeting which includes a pot luck dinner or pizza. These meetings are used to keep the membership informed about what is happening in the club and upcoming events.

Events during the year usually include steak night cookouts, wine & cheese parties, golf and pool tournaments, Chili Cook-Off,  Sea Feast, and various other parties and dinner dances, Christmas Boat Lighting, and Christmas Dinner Dance.

Seaford Yacht Club will be just past Back Creek Park on your right and an oil refinery on your left. You will come upon the entrance (right hand turn) abruptly so start slowing down as you pass Back Creek Park

Take Route 17 North to the intersection of US 17 and Goodwin Neck Road. Turn right on Goodwin Neck Road. Proceed for some 3.5 miles. Seaford Yacht Club will be just past Back Creek Park on your right and an oil refinery on your left. You will come upon the entrance (right hand turn) abruptly so start slowing down as you pass Back Creek Park

Take Route 17 South to the intersection of US 17 and Goodwin Neck Road. Turn left on Goodwin Neck Road. Proceed for some 3.5 miles. Swimmer Died After Blackout

Midshipman drowned during pool exercises.

A member of Navy's men's swimming team drowned in a Newport News, Va., pool after doing exercises designed to enable him to swim farther underwater, his father said yesterday.

Kyle Hurdle, 21, a rising sophomore, died Friday night from shallow water blackout after training without coaching supervision at the Warwick Yacht Club pool, his father, Bill Hurdle, said.

The death was called "extremely rare" by Tarrah Smith, media services coordinator for U.S. Swimming.

According to a Navy report written after three sailors died from shallow water blackout in 1998, the malady occurs when a swimmer purposely hyperventilates before going underwater in an attempt to decrease carbon dioxide levels in the bloodstream. Because carbon dioxide provides the body's primary urge to breathe, reducing those levels allows swimmers to stay underwater longer.

The risk, however, is that swimmers can lose consciousness and drown.

Navy swimming coach Lee Lawrence said he tells Navy swimmers not to try to hold their breath too long underwater without supervision from himself or a senior academy swimming instructor. During practice, Mids swimmers are not allowed to stay underwater longer than 25 meters.

Bill Hurdle said his son was attempting to go 75 meters underwater when he passed out.

"We try to tell our kids that [coaches] have to be around when they swim underwater," Lawrence said. "We have to be very close by watching."

Lawrence said a midshipman died from shallow water blackout in 1989. Midshipmen and Navy divers are trained regarding shallow water blackout.

According to a Newport News police report, Hurdle was doing "breath controlled laps at the pool when he went to the bottom." Lifeguards jumped in, pulled him out and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until a medic arrived. Hurdle was taken to Riverside Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, the report stated.

Hurdle, who turned 21 on Aug. 3, was scheduled to return to the academy on Wednesday. He grew up swimming at the Warwick Yacht Club and held many of the pool records. But Tommy Garner, a family friend, said Hurdle's most lasting contributions had little to do with his swimming talent.

"My 8-year-old son was in the pool the other day and Kyle was playing 'Marco Polo' and 'Shark' with him and his friends," Garner said. "He was a little shy but he was very polite. When he would win races he would wait until the other swimmers walked by and shake their hands. He was someone you wanted your kids to be around."

Hurdle swam the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke in all of Navy's home meets and two away meets last year. At Warwick High, he was a member of the soccer and swimming teams and the National Honor Society.

"He was a great young man with high integrity and he worked 100 percent hard all of the time," Lawrence said. "I would like to have 100 just like him."

But those accomplishments did not come easily. Bill Hurdle recalled walking past Kyle's room at 2:30 in the morning this summer and noticing the lights were on. He looked inside and saw Kyle doing sit-ups.

"I always felt like if I said too much about Kyle I would be bragging," Bill Hurdle said. "But around here, I did not have to brag about him because everything he did spoke for itself. We have been mighty, mighty lucky with our kids. In some ways we have been unlucky. But in other ways we were lucky to have had him as long as we did."

Hurdle's funeral is today at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. He will be buried with full Navy honors on Friday in Annapolis.HURDLE
