Sirrocco is a 154,2 feet superyacht launched in 2006 by the shipyard Heesen. She appears in the second and the fourth seasons of Below Deck Mediterranean shot respectively in Croatia and France.

When Captain Jason Chambers set sail for Peacock’s Below Deck Down Under Season 2 , he was in somewhat unchartered territory. Filmed at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in the stunning waters of Cairns, Australia, the latest season welcomed guests aboard the M/Y Northern Sun , a Japanese superyacht that was unlike any vessel he’d ever captained in the past. “ Northern Sun is a 1977 Japanese fishing vessel that’s been converted to a luxury superyacht,” Captain Jason explains in the Season 2 premiere. “It’s the perfect vessel because, this season, we’re in Cairns, right at the foothills of the most spectacular underwater scenery you’ll ever see. It’s adventure yachting, and it’s perfect for exploration.”

You don’t have to sign up for a reality TV show to visit the 50.8-meter-long Northern Sun, though. The yacht, which began as an ice-class research vessel that analyzed marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea, is currently listed with a weekly charter starting cost of $161,700 and an asking price of $15 million. Able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 staterooms, Northern Sun includes such luxury amenities as al fresco dining, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, as well as a range of water-sport toys, allowing guests the opportunity to go scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, and more, while exploring Thailand and surrounding areas.

In a July interview with Bravo’s The Daily Dish, Chief Stew Aesha Scott explained why Northern Sun made Season 2 “completely different ” in allowing guests to have one-of-a-kind experiences. “The boat was smaller, it was more manageable,” she said, comparing the vessel to M/Y Thalassa BDDU ’s inaugural season. “The boat this year was a converted fishing vessel, and for me it was just so much better because Thalassa was outrageous how big it was. That was part of the stress was that it was just so big ... We’re still offering the guests a really nice five-star experience.”

Northern Sun’s laid-back feel also played a key role in Season 2. “I think altogether that it’s just kind of created a more tropical, casual kind of vibe, which I actually think was a real positive thing because the guests were just so relaxed,” Aesha added. “And [they] just got up to such mischief — which was funny most of the time. Sometimes it was annoying, but most of the time it was funny.”

Captain Jason, for his part, shared in a separate interview with the outlet that the latest installment of the original Bravo franchise flew by, either way. “I walked onto the boat, said ‘What the hell is going on?’” he joked. “And then the season ended.”

Originally christened Keri Lee III , the 181-foot superyacht was launched by U.S. shipyard Trinity Yachts in 2001 and refitted in 2016. Delivered by the U.S. yard in 2008, the vessel received a meticulous refit just before starring Below Deck Season 3 to ensure she was up to snuff.

Delta Marine’s 185-foot superyacht Starship , known as My Seanna during filming, ranked as the fourth priciest vessel with a value of $22.9 million. It also costs a lofty $275,000 per week to rent. Rounding out the top five is Feadship’s BG , or Valor in the show. Delivered by the Dutch yard in 2013, the 153-footer features a highly sophisticated exterior styled by De Voogt and a luxe contemporary interior by McMilen Design. It is estimated to be worth $21 million.

The Untold Truth Of Below Deck Down Under

The " Below Deck" franchise has gone to the Caribbean. It has taken the Mediterranean. It has sailed around Greece and Croatia. And thanks to the fourth iteration of the franchise, it has headed to Australia. Like its predecessors, "Below Deck Down Under" follows a group of yachties as they work and party, and there is no shortage of boozy, boisterous boat-filled drama to keep you afloat. The shows in the "Below Deck" universe are  consistently ranked as some of Bravo's most-watched programs, and the franchise shows no signs of slowing down; "Below Deck Down Under" premiered on Peacock in 2022 and quickly proved there is no such thing as too much "Below Deck." 

"Down Under" follows the tried and true "Below Deck" formula: An attractive crew of seafaring individuals live and work on a souped-up charter yacht for a set number of weeks and cameras catch all of the goings-on. From designing elaborate table settings to planning extravagant meals to navigating dockings, there's plenty of workplace mayhem to be had, as well as a seemingly never-ending stream of interpersonal drama. Strap in, because we are about to get into the untold truth of "Below Deck Down Under."

Aesha Scott wasn't sure she'd come back

Franchise veteran Aesha Scott made her triumphant return to Bravo on "Below Deck Down Under" Season 1, and she continues to bring the same humor that fans fell in love with during "Below Deck Mediterranean" Season 4 and Season 5. On "Down Under," she traded her second stew stripes for the silver stripes of a chief stew. While it's a stressful gig, the New Zealand native was eager to rise to the occasion. As she told  Bravo Insider , "It's just so, so exciting because I think, you know, I'd been second [stew] for a long time... I'm one of those people in life where it's like, if you're too comfortable, then you need to change because you should always be growing and always challenging yourself."

Scott's job title isn't the only major change. As she shared near the top of the first season of "Down Under," the "Below Deck" star is in a committed relationship with boyfriend Scott Dobson ; her days of boat-mances, a la her fling with former "Below Deck: Med" castmate Jack Stirrup, may very well be a thing of the past. 

Though Scott was an immediate fan favorite, her return to the "Below Deck" universe wasn't always a given. As she told ET in 2020, "I think if [Bravo] asked me [to be chief stew], it's definitely something that I would think about ... do feel very checked out of yachting." Thankfully, she's checked back in.

A Below Deck alum told Jason Chambers to join

Standing at the helm of Season 1 of "Below Deck Down Under" is Captain Jason Chambers. The youngest captain to ever be a part of the "Below Deck" franchise, Chambers has logged over 20 years of experience on the water. And we have series alum and fellow Aussie  Hannah Ferrier  to thank for the telegenic captain's involvement in the series. "I reached out to her about the conversations I had with the production team," Chambers shared with Decider , "and she told me: 'You're a great fit for it. Just be yourself and just go and have fun.'" 

While "Below Deck" viewers have watched some chief stews and captains clash in the past, it sure seems like Aesha Scott and Chambers get along swimmingly — partly because he's such a team player. As she shared on Ferrier's " Dear Reality, You're Effed " podcast, Chambers helped out the interior team regularly. "Every extra job that I just could not deal with, he was doing it behind the scenes. And I didn't even ask him," she shared. When Ferrier said he'd be a great fit, she wasn't kidding. 

While the captain is all business when it comes to yachting, he wouldn't say no to any and all future boat-mances. When asked about his romantic life on  "Watch What Happens Live ," Chambers told Andy Cohen he was open to being in a relationship with a stew. We can only imagine what the stack of crew applications looks like.

The crew makes bank

If you're up working hard in some of the most luxurious locations in the world, yachting just might be your calling. So, how much might one rake in as a crew member on a 181-foot yacht like the one on "Below Deck Down Under"?  According to Crewfinders , deckhands and stews on a superyacht of this size can bring in over $60,000 a year, the chief stew and the chef can make as much as $84,000 a year, the bosun at least $66,000, and the captain can earn six figures.

On top of that, there's the whole TV show factor. Former cast member Eddie Lucas made waves when he mentioned money matters to the New York Post in 2022. "While we do get paid better than a normal yachtie, of course, we are still not getting paid what people like the Housewives are making, which is a little frustrating, because they're not really working — they're just going out to dinner and fighting," he stated. Zoinks.

On an episode of "Pop-Off! with James," former deckhand Rhylee Gerber theorized that the constant rotation of crew members each season may have something to do with why the yacht crew is paid less than established "Real Housewives" stars. "If [Lucas] said that, number one, we are paid much, much, much, much, much less than the Housewives, which is crazy because it's Bravo," she said. "It's still a big network. There's still a big production company behind it. They've got the money."

Yes, guests pay to be on the boat

Chartering a fully staffed yacht is expensive no matter how you slice it, and as producer Mark Cronin shared in a Reddit AMA , a primary guest on a "Below Deck" series pays about half of what it'd cost if cameras were not around. So how much can a three-day vacation on a lavish superyacht in some of the most captivating places in the world set a "Below Deck" guest back? While we don't know the exact price of a "Below Deck Down Under" charter, we can develop a guesstimate based on a report by blind item gossip Instagram account DeuxMoi (via Bravo After Thoughts ).

In 2020, DeuxMoi shared a list of details that were reportedly given to "Below Deck Mediterranean" Season 6 guests. "We have two charters that will be 2 nights, 3 days for the discounted price of $40,000. There are 5 charters that are 3 night, 4 days at $45,000," reads the doc. It goes on to confirm travel, food, and beverages are all included in that ticket price.

As for the tip? The guests are expected to cough up at least 15% of the total original cost (i.e., the price before the "Below Deck" discount). However, as Cronin told Bravo's The Daily Dish , the gratuity amount is left up to the guests' discretion. As "Below Deck" viewers know, guest tips do not always live up to expectation. 

Captain Jason Chambers crashed a superyacht

Captain Jason Chambers is known for stealing hearts, yes, but he also made a bit of a name for himself after he crashed a superyacht. The newest "Below Deck "  captain had a titanic fail in Cairns when the 45.6-meter superyacht he was captaining narrowly missed smashing right into a restaurant. In 2019, he was at the wheel when a mechanical failure caused the luxury watercraft to careen into the marina. 

Customers at the neighboring floating restaurant Prawn Star were certainly in for dinner and a show. "It was scary, people were screaming and very frightened. But no one was hurt and that's the most important thing," Prawn Star's manager told ABC at the time. The "Below Deck Down Under" star  explained to 7News Cairns  that a jammed gear caused the collision, and he shut down all engines and did what he could under pressure to avoid injuring any people. Thankfully, the multimillion-dollar yacht only sustained superficial damages after the incident, and more importantly, nobody was injured during the commotion.

The chef was ready to be a villain

A "Below Deck" season isn't complete without the chef and chief stew blowing up on each other, and "Below Deck Down Under" is no different. But based on an interview McKeown gave  Showbiz Cheat Sheet , it sounds like the chef was more than happy to play the role of villain. "So, you know, [production is] going to keep people entertained," he said, "And yeah, I anticipated the hate. I really enjoy it because it's only going to make me go further. So, bring it."

McKeown and Scott butted heads about a number of things, such as plating timing and his relatively simple approach to menu planning. In one especially heated interaction that bubbled up in Episode 6 , she questioned his experience as a yacht chef, and he fired back, "I don't know, how many vacuums have you pushed, how many f**king frying pans did you flip? You stick to vacuums, I'll stick to cooking."

Scott didn't mince words when  Decider  asked about McKeown. "I've dealt with other chefs before who could be really mean, but they were amazing at cooking so I gave them a bit of a pass," she said. "Ryan was not a good chef." However, McKeown believes Scott's to blame for why they started off on the wrong foot. "What was one of the first things she said to me? 'What kind of person — are you cheffy?' So, I'm pretty sure arrogance started with her," he said in Bravo's The Daily Dish .

Bosun Jamie Sayed has worn many hats

Before landing gigs on superyachts and launching his reality television debut, Jamie Sayed built up quite an intense resume. The "Below Deck Down Under" bosun told Decider that he worked as a police officer, lifeguard, and soldier before he got into the yachting industry. 

For now, you can keep up with Sayed thanks to his very own podcast called " Wake Up With Jamie ." "I was at a bar sitting by myself in Panama, and I noticed some people nearby who were telling stories. I realized that every single person has a story," he recalled to Decider. "So, I thought why don't I create a podcast and start interviewing random people and ask them to share their stories." And as for what else the future may hold for the bosun? It sounds like the sky's the limit — literally. As he told Bravo's The Daily Dish , he hopes not only to become a licensed helicopter pilot, but get his own chopper.

There isn't much privacy on Below Deck

So what do "Below Deck Down Under" cast members have to sacrifice to call some of the most stunning locations in the world their "office"? Well, according to "Below Deck Mediterranean" alum Jessica Moore, most of your personal space goes right out the porthole, for starters. In an interview with In Touch , Moore dished on just how limited alone time is onboard the megayachts. "There's zero privacy unless you're going to the restroom." But even then the bathroom isn't altogether safe. As  The New York Times noted in a 2020 feature about the series, the camera crew may still keep tabs on cast members when they are in the toilet — especially if they aren't alone. 

Understandably, this level of surveillance can take some getting used to, but as "Below Deck Down Under" star Captain Jason Chambers told Distractify , it's easy to forget you're on a TV show when you're busy, you know, keeping a giant boat running. 

In Season 3 of "Below Deck," things changed in a big way when longtime boson Eddie Lucas and stew Rocky Dakota turned the ship's laundry room into, to borrow a phrase from "Jersey Shore," the smush room. "Below Deck" star Captain Lee Rosbach told Cosmopolitan , "Well, we never used to have cameras in [the laundry room], because, let's face it, there's not a lot of action in there... until that season. Now we have cameras in the laundry room. The show morphs each year." Big "Below Deck" Brother is always watching. 

There's a lot of work behind the scenes

There's a lot more to "Below Deck" than meets the eye; not unlike the yacht itself, the series is a well-oiled machine. As noted in Boat International , the show's production team works around the clock. Longtime series EP Tania Hamidi explained to the outlet, "The camera crew are running around and hiding from each other while getting all the action." The behind-the-scenes team may be bigger than you'd expect. According to  The New York Times , around 50 hotel rooms are booked during filming to accommodate the crew. 

The production crew has a lot of plates to spin, including keeping tabs on little details. As bosun Eddie Lucas recalled to Cosmopolitan , he got a slap on the wrist after he wound up with a cut on his head from horsing around with Ben Robinson between takes. "I'm pretty sure I had a bald spot and it was bleeding, but we were cracking up about it," said Lucas. "We got yelled at by production." As the magazine pointed out, the sudden change to Lucas' appearance could potentially throw off continuity when it came time to edit the episodes together.  

Though viewers don't really get to see the yacht crew and the production crew interact much, it sure sounds like there's a strong bond there. As "Below Deck Down Under" star Aesha Scott told E! News , the production team was one of the main reasons why she was excited to return to "Below Deck."

How to charter a Below Deck superyacht

Want to know how much it would cost to charter one of the luxury superyachts featured on US hit TV series Below Deck ? We take a look inside Below Deck ’s famous superyachts that you can charter for yourself, and find out what they have to offer charter guests on board.

Northern Sun

The star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two, the 50.8-metre Northern Sun (originally delivered as Hokko Maru ) has lived a full and fascinating life. She was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. As a result, she has the hardy constitution of an explorer, transformed from ship to superyacht under the stewardship of her new owners.

Northern Sun’s main deck is now dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation. 

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across six cabins, with rich, warm interiors that feature natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). The ex-explorer also – naturally – has impressive stowing capacity. She's able to carry two Laser sailboats, scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, with the broker describing her as a "family-orientated" vessel.

The star of Below Deck Mediterranean season seven, 49.8 metre Home is the first “green” superyacht to appear on the show. Featuring a ground-breaking combination of a super-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form by Van Oossanen Naval Architects with power provided by a hybrid propulsion system, Home boasts reduced emissions and fuel costs for the eco-conscious charter guest.

Defined by a distinctive vertical bow and large expanses of glass, Home was penned by Omega Architects and launched by Heesen in 2017. Her interiors, designed by Cristiano Gatto in a modern “Ibiza style”, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins including a full-beam master cabin with a dedicated dressing room and a private office. There is also room for nine members of Below Deck crew on board, including Captain Sandy who has returned to the helm for the seventh season while Home is cruising the coasts of Malta .

The main socialising spot is up on the sundeck, complete with a Jacuzzi and sit-up bar, a shaded lounge and protection from the elements provided by glass screens. Closer to the water, a beach club with an air-conditioned gym is situated next to the swimming platform from which guests can launch the water toys including SeaBobs, Hoverboards, E-foils, Jet Skis and a Flyboard. Home also carries gear for scuba diving, waterskiing and wakesurfing for guests to make the most of their time on board.

Sailing under her own name around the South Pacific islands of French Polynesia on Below Deck’s sixth series, the 56.4 metre My Seanna (now Starship ) was built by Delta Marine in 2000 and refitted in 2014. The Glade-Johnson designed superyacht reappeared again for season eight, where she was filmed cruising in Antigua. She is now starring in the latest season of the show, season nine, following her recent sale .

Key features include an open air Jacuzzi surrounded by an al fresco drinks bar, a gym, a sauna room, a helipad and a spacious beach club complete with a lounge, flatscreen TV and a small galley for preparing snacks or drinks. Her opulent interiors can accommodate up to 12 guests and 11 crew and even offer a home cinema and piano for entertaining in the main saloon. There are multiple toys carried on board as well, including gear for diving and spearfishing, Seabobs and equipment for underwater filming.

“The thing that I really love about My Seanna is the spacious cabins” says Worth Avenue retail charter broker, Shannon McCoy, who has appeared on episodes of Below Deck . She describes My Seanna as a “well-appointed yacht with a good collection of toys for the guests to enjoy,” offering an excellent layout with a variety of spaces that allows charterers “to have breakfast in a different place every morning or enjoy dinner whether it's outside under the sun or in the formal dining area.”

Lady Michelle

Sailing under her real name, Lady Michelle was the star of the sixth series of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was the latest series from the Med spin off. The 54.8 metre Benetti superyacht is the second biggest yacht ever to feature on the show, following just behind the 56.2 metre motor yacht The Wellington from season five. During season six Lady Michelle hosted charter guests in Ibenik, Croatia with Captain Sandy behind the helm.

First delivered in 2003, Lady Michelle features accommodation for up to 14 guests including a split-level master suite with its own panoramic observation lounge. Her Stefano Natucci interiors offer indoor and al fresco dining spaces, an expansive sundeck with a hot tub and dedicated gym. There’s also a range of toys at the guests’ disposal, from Jet Skis and Seabobs to fishing gear and a waterslide.

Charter cost: Lady Michelle is managed by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from $325,000.

The Wellington

Actually named The Wellesley , this 56.2 metre Oceanco superyacht is owned by property magnate and hotelier Khalid Affara and named after his luxury art deco hotel in London. Delivered in 1993, The Wellesley features extended deck spaces and Donald Starkey -penned interiors that replicate the grandeur of the eponymous Knightsbridge hotel. Highlights on board include a waterfall jacuzzi, an outdoor cinema for movies under the stars and a unique private club-style lounge complete with a Winston Churchill inspired cigar room. 

Describing why she makes an excellent charter yacht, James Graham-Cloete, director of charter management from TWW Yachts , says that The Wellesley is “ideal for entertaining family and friends, or hosting corporate events in utter privacy,” thanks to the fact that she “boasts some of the largest open deck spaces of any 56 metre on the water.” Graham-Cloete also adds that, on The Wellesley , “guests are invited to experience the same exceptional personal service, fine dining and attention to detail that has become synonymous with the hotel, on board a private superyacht,” while being looking after by her 14 crew members. “The crew have one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry and one of the best charter records, along with a full-time masseuse on board- making her the ultimate charter yacht!” says Graham-Cloete.

Charter cost: The Wellesley is managed by TWW Yachts with a weekly charter rate starting from €230,000.

Talisman Maiton

Built in 2006 by Turquoise Yachts , with a refit in 2012, the 54.2 metre Talisman Maiton sailed the coasts of Italy in the third series of Below Deck Mediterranean and was also captained by Sandy Yawn. Key features include a generous open plan sun deck with a forward-facing Jacuzzi and bar, al fresco dining spaces and a gym. Inside, she features six individually styled cabins for her 12 guests – including a master suite with its own private office – complemented by a sumptuous interior inspired by a combination of Asian and Art Deco influences. Her toy box is filled with snorkelling and fishing gear, Jet Skis and more for guests to enjoy while on board.

Charter cost: Talisman Maiton is managed by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from €273,000.

Ionian Princess

Appropriately named for the first season of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was set in Greece, the 45.7 metre Christensen -built yacht was captained by Mark Howard during filming. Launched in 2005 and last refitted in 2016, Ionian Princess features a luxurious Greek-style inspired interior finished with high-gloss sapelle mahogany joinery and custom in-laid stonework throughout. Ionian Princess can host up to 12 guests in six cabins, including two master cabins, and also boasts plentiful dining options and a sundeck equipped with a hot tub and sunpads. She also comes with a fleet of water toys from waterskiing and wakeboarding kit to Jet Skis and kayaks. Thanks to her shallow draft, she can also access hard-to-reach hidden gems in the Mediterranean Sea that other larger yachts aren’t able to. “ Ionian Princess is ideally suited for cruising the Mediterranean, which is the most sought-after region for summer yacht charters,” says her management team at charter brokers Northrop & Johnson.

Parsifal III

Parsifal III has been the star of the sailing yacht spin off of Below Deck , captained by Glenn Shephard during filming. The 54 metre Perini Navi was launched in 2005 and was designed by Rémi Tessier . She was most recently refitted in 2020, and offers accommodation for a total of 12 guests and nine crew. Her design has seen her scoop a number of World Superyacht Awards and provides her with excellent performance capabilities at sea; when the weather is on your side, Parsifal III can hit speeds of up to 18 knots under sail. While at anchor, there is still plenty to keep guests entertained with a variety of al fresco and indoor dining spaces, a flybridge hot tub, gym equipment, a swimming platform and a fully-stocked toybox.

Charter cost: Parsifal III is managed for charter by Camper & Nicholsons with a weekly charter rate starting from €195,000.

This 46.88 metre Feadship yacht has so far starred in three seasons of Below Deck , filmed while cruising in the warm-weather destinations of the US Virgin Islands, Saint Martin and Thailand. Featured under the name Valor , she is actually called BG and is owned by Canadian entrepreneur Bobby Genovese . Delivered in 1990 to a design by Frits De Voogt ,  BG  can accommodate 12 guests and 11 crew members. On board highlights include her deck hot tub, on board gym and al fresco dining spaces. She also carries an extensive fleet of toys from Jet Skis and wakeboards to a climbing wall and inflatable slide. In 2021, BG  emerged from an extensive, multi-million dollar refit, with her owner detailing that “everything that could have been done to the boat, has been done”, from tech upgrades and new toys to a fresh lick of paint on her hull. “I love that boat, and the more boats I go on, the more I like my boat,” says Genovese.

Appearing under an alias, Eros –named after the Greek god of love - was actually called Mustang Sally during season three, which was filmed in the pristine waters of The Bahamas. Since airing in 2015, the 49.07 metre superyacht has been renamed Stay Salty . Built by Trinity Yachts in 2008 to a design by Geoff Van Aller , Stay Salty accommodates a total of 12 guests and 10 crew members on board. Inside, highlights include the split-level master with a private study and panoramic views, as well as a formal dining area and skylounge with a drinks bar. Above deck, viewers would have seen guests enjoying themselves in the hot tub and al fresco dining and lounge areas. Toys carried on board that charter guests made full use of during the show include Jet Skis, fishing equipment and a beach picnic set up. Powered by twin caterpillar engines, Stay Salty can reach a top speed of up to 20 knots.

Charter cost: Stay Salty is not currently available for charter, but in 2020 was sold by Denison Yachting with an asking price of $12,900,000.

Below Deck Down Under review – it’s Downton Abbey on a boat, what more could you want?

This Aussie spin-off of the US reality hit, following the crew of a luxury yachts as they cater to the needs of the super rich makes for fantastically enjoyable telly

I t was a given that the Australian spin-off of US maritime reality show Below Deck would feature some local flair. But when Channel Seven news footage from 2019 popped up halfway through the first episode of Below Deck Down Under, I was surprised and absolutely on board.

Nine years ago Bravo released Below Deck, a reality show about the crew working on luxury yachts, catering to the charter guests’ every whim in an effort to attain the elusive big tip. The show is a treasure chest of reality TV subgenres: it’s a travel show, it’s a cooking show, it’s the youthful mess of early Vanderpump Rules (crew) and the narcissistic wealth and schadenfreude of The Real Housewives (guests). It’s class politics, service industry hierarchies, tourism and melodrama. And it’s all on a boat!

Below Deck has launched a fleet of spin-offs: Below Deck Mediterranean, Below Deck Sailing Yacht and now, Below Deck Down Under, recorded on Queensland’s shores and following the crew of superyacht Thalassa. It’s all a bit Downton Abbey: downstairs are the crew’s matchbox-sized living quarters, kitchen and crew mess; upstairs on deck is the glamorous dining room, jacuzzi and luxury guest suites. After each charter, the crew let off steam on crazy nights out, with this season filmed on Airlie Beach.

The formula is standard across the franchise, with each spin-off featuring some familiar faces and a mostly rotating crew each season (or even during the season). The central unchanging force is the series captain, and this time we get Captain Jason Chambers, with his broad Aussie accent and laid-back “I’m more of a big brother than a captain” attitude.

In an effort to distinguish Captain Jason from the rest, he’s introduced as a hands-on hottie, very much in control of Thalassa as it charters the Whitsundays. So when old news footage of a 45.6-metre yacht he was captaining was shown crashing into a marina , I was overjoyed. No one was hurt and Captain Jason saved the day. But to me, it was a perfect moment for a Australian spin-off of a popular US show: is there anything we love more than watching a slow-motion crash? And now we get one at our own marina.

In over 260 episodes of the Below Deck franchise, there have been countless personal and professional crashes involving crew, captains and clients. (And only a couple as literal as Jason’s.) Kicking the season off, Captain Jason endures another mechanical failure, this time one that means Thalassa can’t even leave the dock. While the captain tries to sort the issue, it’s up to the band of international yachties on board to keep guests entertained and happy.

The crew is what makes or breaks Below Deck, no matter the location or spin-off. How they respond to charter guests, and each other, is where the drama thrives. Most of the Down Under crew are green, but Below Deck Med alum (and fan favourite) Aesha Scott is back. The chief stew is undoubtedly the shining star of Below Deck Down Under, with her Kiwi sense of humour, optimism and no-shit talking giving the series the vibe it was longing for with Captain Jason. Enter her foil: American chef Ryan McKeown, whose self-professed arrogance clashes Aesha’s service-first approach, already brewing a combustible level of conflict.

But that’s not the only personality clash set up. On the first crew night out, while the alcohol is flowing and the hot tub being used by those who normally clean it, bosun Jamie has an outburst after discovering one of the female crew members already has a boyfriend. “I’ve just been told [that] every girl on the fucking boat has a boyfriend, apparently,” he says, adding that he is “not interested” in anyone else on the boat. It is uncomfortable to watch.

Similarly, it is hard to see deckhand Benny being given a “you can do better” award by the captain in front of his colleagues, wearing a disco ball helmet as a kind of humiliation. The captain and crew say it is all in good fun, but it’s hard not to see this busting someone’s balls style of management under the guise of jocular larrikinism as a classic taste of Aussie punch-down workplace culture.

We’re yet to see any truly heinous or demanding guests, but the setup for “crashes” is strong. Like a superyacht careering into a marina, there’s no stopping Below Deck Down Under now.

Bowlines, Bosuns, and Bar Keepers Friend: The Lowdown on ‘Below Deck’

It’s time to sail the seas while catching up on all the tea.

If you're looking for a new show to binge, Bravo's “Below Deck” might just float your boat. As Bravo's most-watched series, it combines the drama of “ The Real Housewives ,” the class-consciousness and drama of “Triangle of Sadness,” and the sexual tension of “Love Island,” making it a must-watch .

“Below Deck” celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and is the first of five franchises available to stream on Peacock . The other four are “Below Deck Mediterranean,” “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” “Below Deck Down Under,” and “Below Deck Adventure.” Really, these franchises don't need much explanation since the titles do much of the work.

In what follows, you'll learn more about the ins and outs of “Below Deck,” including useful terminology; details about the crew, guests, and yachts; and everything you need to know before hitting the high seas from your living room.

Getting Under Way

The first thing to notice about “Below Deck” is that it's gorgeous. The settings are stunning, the crews are craved by all, and boats are beautiful. Each season is set against backdrops that will make your jaw drop, including the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, the fjords of Norway, and the Queensland coast in northeast Australia.

Apart from “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” each season takes place on ships that are officially designated as motor yachts and cost about $200,000 per charter. The ships on this show vary in size, but let's just say that all the apartments I've ever lived in would fit comfortably in one of these “boats.” They house jacuzzis (plural) and master suites with $10,000 toilets and often carry a couple of jet skis on board wherever they go. If money talks for you, and it certainly does a lot of the talking in “Below Deck,” these ships are worth roughly 400,000 trips to your local kayak kiosk.

Boundless Drama

Part and parcel of any reality series is the larger-than-life drama that arises when people live, eat, sleep, and work together in incredibly cramped quarters, all while being filmed. This is what we make the popcorn for, though, and the crew and customers in “Below Deck” are always willing to put on a show.

As the title suggests, the stars of “Below Deck” are the crew members rather than the wealthy charter guests. Some of the employees appear on several seasons of a franchise, which provides a sense of stability amid a sea of chaos. And yet, there are enough new faces to keep the show fresh and see how all kinds of personalities mesh.

While this show might be described as “upstairs-downstairs” because of its focus on the crew as a separate entity from the passengers, the boundaries between the two are blurry at best. When guests arrive on the boat, they're met with champagne, and it doesn't stop flowing until they disembark. Even though the crew isn't allowed to drink on charter (this is probably the No. 1 rule on the show), the crew parties down once the guests are gone.

Naturally, all of the booze makes for entertaining TV, but on “Below Deck,” there's plenty of drama without it. For instance, navigating and maintaining a 150-plus-foot ship presents its own set of unique challenges, including untangling anchor chains, battling high winds, suppressing oven fires, and avoiding other boats nearby. As this show demonstrates, life in paradise can sometimes be anything but.

Comedy at Its Finest

For all the tensions that arise at sea (and at port), there are just as many laughs. It makes sense given the stressful, demanding life of a yachtie that the balance be struck between work and play. And in the same way that a seemingly limitless amount of alcohol creates trouble for guests and crew alike, much of it is in the name of fun.

Because audiences peer into almost every moment of the crew's life, they're also treated to beautiful moments of vulnerability, compassion, and teamwork. Because the safety of everyone on board depends on the crew's ability to pull together, it's heartening to see the maelstrom of charter season peppered with a dash of humanity — really good-looking humanity.

The yachties on “Below Deck” have been known to participate in diving competitions, drag performances, and much more to secure a good tip at the end of the charter. They throw lavish parties and picnics for the guests, but more importantly, they take every opportunity to pretend they're the ones with millions of dollars to waste — and that's the dream!

Finally, with the abundance of oysters, caviar, and champagne, audiences can expect a slew of romances between crew members, as messy as it is, and a wide array of couples, throuples, and more between charter guests. “Below Deck” features weddings, breakups, blowups, and throwdowns that will have you laughing, crying, and grabbing for your safety vest.

Facing Reality

Many of the yacht employees work on these boats seasonally since many of the filming locations are subject to severe weather during wet seasons. So while the tips might be lucrative (about $1,300 per charter per employee), they won't sustain someone for the whole year.

Some crew members work on yachts or catamarans (sailing ships on pontoons) throughout the year, but others lead completely different lives on land for the remaining 39 weeks of the year. After all, despite the cramped quarters and constant turnover of guests, many of the crew express how isolating and lonely it can be in this industry.

For audiences, however, the reality seems like a mix of glamor and elbow grease for the crew. They know the expectations of them on the show, and they (more or less) know what tasks they need to perform. Together, the crew reveals a fascinating side of luxury yachting, one that almost makes it seem accessible.

Useful Vocab

There are a lot of nautical terms thrown around in “Below Deck” that might put a kink in your anchor chain, so here's a list of words so you don't have to keep track:

Bosun: Technically written as “boatswain,” this is the most senior member of the deck crew. When anything happens on the exterior of the boat, the bosun takes responsibility and answers to the captain, chief engineer, and first mate.

Bow: This is the front of the ship, also known as the “fore.”

Bowline: Perhaps one of the most important knots in a yachtie's toolbelt, the bowline is tied and untied easily and is used for all manner of things aboard a ship. Not to be confused with the “bow line,” which is the rope that attaches the front of the vessel to a dock, rock, etc.

Chief stew: Short for “chief steward·ess,” this crew member manages the ship’s interior and oversees a team of steward·esses to ensure the comfort of the guests. The chief stew works closely with the yacht's chef to coordinate meals.

Deckhands: These invaluable members of the crew are responsible for maintaining the conditions of the boat's exterior. They provide much of the physical labor, shuttling guests around, setting up water toys, and keeping the ship in, well, shipshape. They keep the teak at its peak so the guests can make the most out of the outdoor amenities.

Port: The left side of the ship in relation to the front (bow).

Starboard: The right side of the ship in relation to the bow.

Stern: The rear of the ship, also known as the “aft.”

Tender: A small motorboat used to shuttle guests from the yacht's anchorage to shore, etc.

Wheelhouse: A section of the ship that covers the helm (wheel). This is generally where a yacht captain spends most of their time. Not Captain Sandy, though; she's a great, hands-on leader.

Yacht: Surprisingly, there's no standardized definition of a yacht, but it's generally considered to be a passenger ship with a cabin intended for overnight use. Etymologically, the term comes from the Dutch jacht for “a hunt” or “a chase,” so called because of their speed and their intended use to hunt down privateers and other law-breaking ships in the 1500s.

Below Deck Yachts

If you’ve never seen the show, it follows the crew of a luxury yacht during peak “charter season.” The original Below Deck, for example, showed off the glitz and glamour of the Caribbean, especially around St. Thomas, the British Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas. The Mediterranean spin-off, on the other hand, highlights European hotspots, including Italy, Spain and Croatia.

The show is undeniably a ton of fun. From the drama in the crew quarters, to the incredible beaches, the show provides an entertaining look behind the curtain.

Yet, the chartered superyachts are the real stars of the show. Each season, Below Deck features a truly stunning super yacht. All of them measure over 150 feet and are decked out in opulent features, staterooms and amenities. And here’s something you might not know: The majority of the Below Deck yachts are available for charter!

Below Deck Charter Yachts

Through five seasons, Below Deck has featured some of the most magnificent super yachts in the world. Some of the yachts have changed ownership since the show, been renamed, or have undergone a refitting. Yet, most look like they did from the show.

But beyond the name and maybe a few changes to the interior, there aren’t many differences. All of the water toys, Jacuzzis and stunning outdoor dining areas are what you’ll find on the yachts available for charter! So which charter yachts are available?

Here’s a more detailed look at the yachts featured on the original Below Deck:

Honor – Season 1

Honor (which is now LUMIERE) kicked off the first season, and she put on a dazzling display. The yacht, originally built by Benetti in 1999, is one of the largest yachts ever featured on the show, and it was actually booked for a five-week charter for filming.

HONOR benefited from the new-found fame of the show. She sold after it aired for nearly $15 million, and the new owners completely refit her interiors and renamed the boat. Today, LUMIERE is a masterpiece of nautical engineering.

She features luxurious accommodations for up to 12 guests and an abundance of deck space, including a sprawling sun deck. The yacht also features a wide array of water toys (the slide was a struggle for the crew all season!).

Ohana – Season 2

Season 2 took the crew on a tour of the British Virgin Islands and featured some familiar faces. Captain Lee, Chef Ben, and Bosun Eddie were back, much to the pleasure of fans. Yet, the yacht was completely different.

OHANA (real name is RHINO) was featured on the second season, a stunning 154-footer, with beautiful decks, a horseshoe outdoor bar, and a stunning outdoor sun deck. After the show aired in 2014, Ohana underwent an extensive retrofit.

She now features an updated interior with a decidedly modern, airy vibe, as well as new hardware, including a state-of-the-art stabilization system.

Eros – Season 3

EROS took centerstage in Season 3, and the 161-foot yacht, originally built for the founder of Tim Hortons, was one of the most luxurious featured on the show. The beautiful tri-deck, featured a stately saloon, a sky lounge Jacuzzi, and sleek exterior styling.

EROS – which was sold prior to the third season – has since been renamed and was also remodeled. She’s now known as Mustang Sally, and unfortunately, this is one of the few Below Deck charter yachts that’s not available for charter.

Valor – Seasons 4 & 5

The stately VALOR was a fan favorite in Season 4 and 5. Built in 1990 by Dutch-based Feadship, the 154-foot VALOR featured a sprawling aft deck, perfect for sunset dinners and afternoon lounges. Plus, the ship – when featured on the show – had a range of water toys, including dual jet skis and a sleek, boutique hotel-inspired interior.

Like Mustang Sally, VALOR – which is now known as simply BG – isn’t available for charter. Yet, fans will always remember all the drama that took place on board.

The Dutch-built yacht originally launched in 2006, and thanks to its unique two-tone, third-deck exterior, she was remembered for her striking exterior. All of the yacht’s features made great TV. From her incredible sun deck, to the African chic interior, and all of the many water toys, SIROCCO’s impressive design and amenities stood out.

Talisman Maiton – Season 3

Named for an island in Thailand, TAILSMAN MAITON is a stunning tri-deck that cruises the pristine waters of Italy and all of the Mediterranean. The largest to ever be featured on the show, TAILSMAN is truly incredible.

The yacht accommodates 12 guests, in 6 beautifully appointed rooms. There’s a master suite, as well as 1 VIP stateroom, and four smaller cabins. The yacht was built in 2006, but most recently refit in 2016 with a timeless Art Deco aesthetic. The yacht also features a sundeck spa pool with a beautiful bar, a full-service gym, and an observation deck with panoramic views.

After exclusively breaking the news about the brand new 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' series earlier this year, YachtCharterFleet can now unveil more details about Bravo's latest addition to the Below Deck franchise. 

Set to hit our screens on February 3, 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' will follow a new crew of yachties as they set sail around the coastlines of Greece .

This is the first series in Below Deck history which features a luxury sailing yacht, with the 180ft sailing yacht Parsifal III playing the starring role.

The new series joins the original Below Deck, which premiered in 2013, and Below Deck Mediterranean, which premiered in 2016.

Promising even more action on the high seas, a new trailer gives us an insight into what we can expect from the show's first ever season.

What's different about the new series?

This is the first ever time Below Deck has branched away from motor yachts, and the sailing vessel component of the new series is expected to inject even more drama to the show. 

This is partly due to the fact that the design of luxury sailing yachts leads to far more confined crew areas than we are used to seeing on the original Below Deck.

Although the 180ft Parsfill III is the 59th largest sailing yacht ever build, her interior volumes are much smaller than a motor yacht of the equivalent length. Motor yachts are typically wider, and have more decks- Parsifal III has just three slim decks.

Sailing yachts also heel (lean) from side to side while under sail, creating plenty of problems for the interior team as you can see in the trailer above.

Sailing yachts generally feature smaller galleys, tiny stew stations and cramped crew quarters which are in closer proximity to the guests’ living areas, making it more challenging for the crew to deliver their signature silver service.

Sailing yachts also heel (lean) from side to side while under sail, creating plenty of problems for the interior team, as you can see in the trailer above.

In addition, we can expect to see the deck crew placed in a far more demanding role, with sailing yachts requiring accuracy and skills to manoeuvre safely.

Furthermore, plenty of deck duties take place in the midst of guest areas, so the pressure will be on as the sailors struggle to keep their cool in front of their charter guests.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Cast: New crew and a familiar face

The crew is helmed by the yacht's full-time captain Glenn Shepherd, a keen sailor with 10 years of experience on board Parsifal III. This is unusual for Below Deck, as the full-time crew are usually replaced with a temporary cast during filming. 

Long-time Below Deck fans will spot a familar face in the crew; chef Adam Gliick, who made his debut appearance in Below Deck Mediterranean season 2 and is returning for the first season of the new Sailing Yacht series.

There is also a couple onboard, which is common in yachting, but has never been seen before on Below Deck. Ciara Duggan and Paget Berry also work full-time on Parsifal III, but the pair has never worked in the same department before. Berry works as the yacht's first mate, while Duggan will be stepping in as deckhand. 

The interior crew is headed up by chief stewardess Jenna MacGillivray. She will need to have a firm hold on her crew and an even firmer hold on her interior, as unsecured items will wreak havoc when the yacht catches wind and heels (leans). She is joined by second stewardess Madison Stalker and third stew Georgia Grobler.

Where was Below Deck Sailing Yacht filmed?

Filming for the new series took place around the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. The yacht's homeport for the series was Corfu Yacht Harbour; this is where we can expect to catch our first glimpse of the charter guests as they embark and disembark the yacht. 

When will Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiere?

The new Sailing Yacht series premieres Monday, February 3rd at 9pm ET/PT on Bravo TV.

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? Here's what we know

W hat happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? That’s the question on fans’ minds after it was revealed Below Deck Med Season 9 will air following Below Deck Season 11.

Ever since Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered on Bravo, it has followed the OG show.

Below Deck Med would then hit Bravo airwaves once the sailing show had wrapped it’s run.

That’s the way it’s been for the past four years, except for last year when Below Deck Down Under Season 2 aired after Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

So why all of a sudden is there a switch in the schedule, especially since Below Deck Med Season 8 just ended in January?

Let’s take a look at what we know.

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

The reason for the change-up likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out against Gary King after Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was filmed.

Leaked photos revealed that Daisy Kelliher and Gary were back for another stint aboard Parsifal III with Captain Glenn. The two of them returning was music to fans’ ears as they helped make Below Deck Sailing Yacht a huge success with Colin MacRae.

However, a couple of weeks later, news broke that a member of the production team came out via Rolling Stone to accuse Gary of unwanted sexual advances and harassment. Gary was soon removed from the BravoCon 2023 list, making clear Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be in trouble.

Unlike when Peter Hunziker was fired by Bravo for a racist post and then edited out of the season, Gary has not been fired from the show. Plus, editing Gary out really wouldn’t be an option because he plays such a pivotal role and makes a good story even if fans don’t like him.

All of this means that what would have been Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be scrapped. Should that be the case, a new season of the sailing show won’t air for a long time.

Then again, maybe the powers that be are still trying to figure out how to save the season with Gary, and they just need more time.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans share thoughts on schedule change

A Reddit thread devoted to the Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht swap had fans buzzing.

“I would absolutely be okay with a delay if it means not having to watch Gary. I’m not sure I’ll even watch if he’s on it, especially since Colin isn’t. And Glenn the enabler has went from being best captain to #3 now…,” wrote one user.

Another admitted to liking the sailing show with Daisy but could do without Gary and would be fine if Season 5 never aired.

“AS IT SHOULD BE. Bravo needs to learn- you hire racists, you hire sexual abusers, you’re going to lose money. The end.” was another remark.

A different user doesn’t think the season will air and noticed Daisy switched her Instagram bio, so that may be a clue that Season 5 will never see the light of day. There was also speculation that Below Deck spin-offs will soon be combined for money reasons.

“That is a possibility or they’re still editing the heck out of it to reduce his role as much as possible but that has got to be a monumental task. I doubt they’d scrub an entire season but maybe more things have come out behind the scenes we’re unaware of and they have to do what they have to do especially with all the negative publicity they’re getting with Andy Cohen lately.” declared another user.

Along with Below Deck Sailing Yacht being pushed back, Below Deck Down Under fate seems to be up in the air. As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Captain Jason Chambers asked for fans’ help with Season 3.
