Also timed to view Fall foliage, you will travel north of Lock and Dam 11, providing you with the experience of locking through a dam.
We leave our dock at 9:30 am and return around 4:00 pm. Keep in mind that a boat cannot schedule a time to enter the lock, so our Captain uses his knowledge and experience to return at the right time, but circumstances could cause us to return to dock a little late.
Expect to travel to the vicinity of Cassville, WI before we return to our dock. Live music continental breakfast, hot lunch buffet, unlimited soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, coffee, and two adult beverages included with each adult ticket.
In the event that we cannot use the lock, we will instead travel to Bellevue, IA before returning home. On this alternate route, we will not pass through a lock.
Some Useful Information
Blocked streets can cause delays.
We appreciate railroads and the hard work of their crews, but travelers need to be aware of possible driving delays due to Dubuque streets being blocked by trains. If you are approaching our location by driving northbound on US Hwy 61/151, do not take the White Street or 9th Street Exits to get to us. Both of these exits cross railroad tracks, and trains can sometimes block street traffic as long as 30 minutes. That could cause you to miss your cruise!
Instead, continue north and take the Kerper Blvd Exit. At the traffic light, turn right, then turn left onto 16th Street. Be in the right lane, and turn right onto Admiral Sheehy Dr, and then take the next right turn to arrive in our parking lot. On this route, the road takes you over the railroad tracks avoiding the possibility of being delayed by a train!
Please tell us that you are bringing the little ones.
Babies are people too.
We happily let children 3 years of age and younger take a ride free of charge, but they are counted as a passenger just like paying customers. So, when you make reservations, please inform us if you have that little bundle of joy so we can add them to our passenger list!

Port Burlington IA cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Burlington IA, Iowa. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Burlington IA is a Missouri River cruise port and town in Des Moines County (Iowa USA) with population around 25,000. B-known for its Snake Alley (world's most crooked street), Burlington developed as a river port (during the USA's steamboat era / late-18th-19th-centuries) and a central city on the Burlington Route (CBQ-Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad). In 1970, the railroad merged into Burlington Northern Railroad, which in 1997 merged into BNSF Railway (North America's largest freight train network). One of BNSF's main east-west lines crosses Mississippi River at Burlington.
In mid-November 2019, world's largest river cruise company - Viking Cruises (Basel Switzerland-based) announced that Burlington IA will become a regular port of call of the company's new Missouri River cruise division in the USA. Viking and Burlington City officials also signed a 2-year agreement according to which the city leased docking (riverside berthing) facilities to Viking Cruises as the company pays USD 1 per disembarking passenger. The first (of all 6 planned) newbuild riverboats - Viking Mississippi - is scheduled to start operations in 2022. Viking planned 30 dockings in Burlington for the period July 2022 through October 2023. Future plans include adding Burlington as a daily visited Viking river cruise port. The deal is not exclusive and allows the City to provide berthing also to other cruise lines boats.
Next table shows Viking's Missouri River cruise itineraries that include Burlington IA.
As cruise port, Burlington IA is included in the schedule of American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company (AQSC) -owned paddlewheel riverboats American Duchess and American Queen . Next table shows AQSC's 14-night southbound itinerary from Red Wing to New Orleans. Prices in 2020 started at ~USD $4500-5700 pp (double-occupancy balcony cabin rates) depending on ship and departure date.
AQSC's cruise price-inclusive shore excursions include city tours visiting Des Moines County Heritage Center (ex Burlington Public Library), Garrett-Phelps House Museum (mid-19th-century mansion), Burlington Capitol Theatre (1937-built cinema), Port Burlington Welcome Center (on the riverfront), Snake Alley (world's "crookedest street").
The current-day city's economy is based on transportation (river shipping and freight trains) and manufacturing plants, including Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (American Ordnance LLC), General Electric, Shearer's Foods (snack products manufacturer), Winegard Company (connectivity products). Region's largest employer is Great River Health (southeast Iowa's largest hospital). Other major companies include Murray Turbomachinery (heavy industrial equipment) and Case Corporation (part of CNH Industrial NV, manufacturer of agricultural-construction equipment, buses-trucks-commercial vehicles, industrial-marine powertrains).
Amtrak (USA's passenger railway network) connects to Burlington with daily trains between Illinois and California (Chicago-Emeryville, San Francisco Bay). Southeast Iowa Airport is approx 5 mi (8 km) south of downtown and serves regular domestic flights (of Air Choice One) linking to Chicago (Illinois) , Mason City (Iowa) and St Louis (Missouri) . Quad City Airport serves international flights and is located in Moline IA - approx 70 mi (110 km) north of Burlington.

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.
Karen V • Pella, Iowa
The service by all involved was first class all the way!
We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!
Denny F • Morgan Hill, California
Wonderful relaxing two days....
Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….
Ron S. • Tipton, Iowa

Viking River Cruises
Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.
Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.
New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans
Price: Starts at $3,999 per person
If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.
2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.
Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis
Length: Nine days
Price: Starts at $4,299 per person
Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.
2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.
America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans
Price: Starts at $12,999 per person
This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.
Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.
2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

Liquid nitrogen fertilizer spill kills nearly 750k fish in iowa river: officials.

Hundreds of thousands of fish were killed earlier this month in a nearly 50-mile stretch of the East Nishnabotna River to the Missouri border due to a fertilizer spill in Iowa, state officials said.
On March 11, NEW Cooperative, Inc. in Red Oak reported to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that a spill occurred on their Montgomery County premises.
About 1,500 tons (equal to 265,000 gallons) of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (32% solution) was released into a drainage ditch, which subsequently entered the East Nishnabotna River.
The spill happened due to an above-ground storage tank valve that was mistakenly left open over the weekend, the DNR said.
DNR Fisheries staff said the fish kill affected the entire 49.8 miles of the East Nishnabotna and Nishnabotna Rivers downstream of the spill and extended to Missouri’s section of the Nishnabotna River before concluding near the junction with the Missouri River.
As of Thursday, it was reported that a total of 749,242 fish had been killed , with the most affected species being the minnows, shiners, dace and chubs at 707,871.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted to determine the impact of the fertilizer release on other aquatic life.
According to Iowa state codes, a permit is required to discharge pollutants into a river .
The DNR is collaborating with its legal department to determine the next course of action regarding enforcement and restitution for the loss of aquatic life.
According to recent field tests, ammonia levels in the river are showing a decline.
However, the DNR still recommends that individuals refrain from engaging in recreational activities on the river and avoid collecting or consuming dead fish found in or around the river.
