Royal Cape Yacht Club

Good vibes & tides.

Located in the Port of Cape Town, RCYC offers a warm greeting and hospitality to weary sailors. First time visitors are invited to discover the “Fairest Cape” with its bounty of scenery, wine farms, local cuisine and much more.

The RCYC has a glorious history spanning over a hundred years. Committees and Commodores have come and gone, yet the cornerstone on which the Table Bay Yacht Club was built in 1905, “to take the sport of yachting seriously and to provide races for its members” is still present to this very day.

Mission Statement: To promote the Royal Cape Yacht Club as a unique, world-class Sailing Centre where yachting in all its forms are encouraged, and as ‘Tavern of the Seas’ provides an environment for camaraderie, shared experience and inclusivity.

Vogelvlei Yacht Club

Welcome to Vogelvlei Yacht Club

Home of the Tour de Vlei endurance race

yacht clubs south africa

Graced by the majestic Limietberg mountains and completely hidden from view, Voëlvlei Dam is home to one of the oldest yacht clubs in South Africa: Vogelvlei Yacht Club.

Vogelvlei Yacht Club is nestled in a bird sanctuary, and the cry of the Fish Eagle is often heard. Pelicans and flocks of geese are also local residents. The dam is home to a variety of fish such as Smallmouth Bass, Trout and Catfish.

Because Voëlvlei Dam supplies drinking water to the greater Cape Town, no motorised water sports are allowed. The main water sport is sailing and passionate sailors of dinghies and cats gather here regularly to race or just to enjoy sailing in the unspoiled, stunningly beautiful surrounding environment.

Vogelvlei is renowned for its Tour de Vlei endurance race which attracts entrants from all over the province and is an event not to be missed. It is the only dinghy longhaul sailing event in the Western Cape sailing calendar.

Our sail training program to educate novice sailors is a very important activity and we also involve children from the surrounding community in this program.

The club is open to the wider sailing community on regatta weekends when camping facilities are available. Visit our Events page and plan a weekend of sailing at Vogelvlei. We’d love to see you here!

Sailing in South Africa

With thousands of kilometres of coastline, South Africa’s sailing locations are countless and each one more incredible than the next.

Out on the open ocean, marvelling at the silence and soaking in the warm sun on your face - sailing in South Africa provides incredible sights and experiences that cannot be missed. Whether it’s the colder waters of the Western Cape , or the warmer oceans of KwaZulu Natal , sailing in South Africa is sure to give you an experience of a lifetime.

Did you know? All of South Africa’s coastal cities have yacht clubs and always welcome new faces. These yacht clubs host sailing competitions, lessons as well as fantastic sailing trips.

Most South African commercial sailing establishments won’t require any input from you on the yacht and thus you’re able to sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. Moving quickly over large ocean swells, rising and falling over each wave, is a wonderful feeling - providing you don’t get sea sick. Manned by trained professionals, you will be taken on a memorable ride along the beautiful South African coastline.

South African sailing hot spots include Cape Town , Port Elizabeth , Mossel Bay , Plettenberg Bay and Knysna . All of South Africa’s coastal cities have yacht clubs and always welcome new faces. These yacht clubs host sailing competitions, lessons as well as fantastic sailing trips. The False Bay yacht club hosts the biggest and most enthusiastically supported event namely the annual Spring Regatta. This event takes place around the end of September each year and is supported by all the local yacht clubs. It has become very popular over the past 5 years.

With the wide variety of marine life off the shores of South Africa, your sailing experience is sure to include sightings of dolphins, schools of fish, seals, penguins and perhaps even some whales in season. Why not contact your local travel office and arrange to enjoy one of the many awesome South African sailing experiences available to the public.

Knysna is home to magical lagoons and estuaries that await your exploration. Go sailing for the day in a yacht discovering the wild, but phenomenally beautiful, "Knysna Heads". Admire the fantastic view and sunset whilst sipping on crisp chilled champagne and snacking on oysters. The friendly city of Port Elizabeth offers yacht day trips out of the harbour and along the magical coast line. After admiring the fantastic view, they will stop in a secluded bay and prepare dinner for you. Enjoy a memorable day with friends and family eating great food and admiring the glorious sunset.

South African sailing allows awesome opportunities to snorkel and scuba dive . Getting to unique locations on a yacht means you can discover the mystical kelp forests and wrecks and swim with gorgeous tropical fish and corals. Invite your friends and family and spend your holiday sailing around the picturesque South African coast.

South Africa promises an unforgettable time with fantastic seas, awesome marine life and exquisite views.

Tavern of the seas – the royal cape yacht club.

T T he Royal Cape Yacht Club, based in Cape Town, is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture and has been a home from home for visiting sailors since 1905.

Look down on Table Bay from Signal Hill on a Wednesday evening between October and March and you’ll see a scattering of sails fluttering out in the bay.

This is the regular Wednesday night regatta, hosted by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, and an event that is as much part of the Cape summer scene as the south- easter that sends white clouds pouring over Table Mountain.

The club, based in the Table Bay Harbour , is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture, harking back to the days when the city was known as the Tavern of the Seas, a place where sailors could unwind after many days at sea on the route between Europe and the East.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club continues this tradition by offering around-the-world sailors a place to moor their yachts and to meet members of the local yachting community.

The club started out life in a humble boat shed at the foot of Loop Street back in 1905 , before a landfill project extended the city centre into an area now known as the Foreshore. It received the Royal Charter shortly after 1914 and moved into its present premises at the Small Craft Basin inside the harbour a decade after World War II.

However, it was only after the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cape to Rio yacht race in 1971 that yachting in the city really took off. Today, the club’s membership hovers around the 1   700-mark, the adjacent marina offers moorings for over 4 00 yachts, and the club is the centre of the city’s amateur yachting community and the base for a sailing academy.

Visit on any given day and you’ll more than likely find a few 'yachties' messing about on their boats, a couple of international visitors passing through and some local folk catching up with each other over a beer.

The club is housed in an unassuming, low-slung building featuring a restaurant and sunny outdoor terrace overlooking the marina, a bar, visitors' lounge, offices and several venues, like the Galley, Chartroom and Regatta Centre, which are rented out for parties and conferences.

Although it’s members’ only, you may enter as a guest of a member, or you can take out a short-term membership for the duration of your stay in Cape Town. (And, no, you don’t have to own a yacht.)

Over the years, the club has played host to several international yachting events, among them the Whitbread, Volvo and Hong Kong Challenge.

What an awesome opportunity to meet (long time no see) club mates, to share memories and to get the sailing community together on board again!

For the past two years  the Committee has  done their utmost  to prevent the eviction of the Club from the premises which it has occupied for all these years but regrettably  we  must advise  that Transnet National Port Authorities forced us to vacate the premises by the 31st January 2019. All our legal options have been exhausted, but we will continue the fight for justice with the National Port Regulator with whom a complaint was laid two years ago against our landlords the TNPA. The MBYBC will continue to exist as an entity! We are in discussions with a number of…

MBYBC goes to the Topper World Championship

We are very excited to announce that after a stringent selection process, the following students of the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club sailing school have been selected to compete in the Topper World Championship 2018 being hosted by China: Tammy Holden, James Bull, Bradon Kretzman, Waydon Goliath and Shadley Thomas. This event is taking place in China from 11th – 25th August 2018. The selection process took place as a result of our being invited by International Topper Class Association to enter 5 sailors in this event. As can be expected the cost of taking part in a world…

MBYBC Court Case Feedback

Dear Members. The MBYBC’s request for review was heard in the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town on 2 March 2018. The Commodore attended the hearing and came back feeling positive about our case. Our Advocate presented a good case which was, in our opinion,  well received by the judges. The Judges will now consider all information placed before them before handing down their judgement. This will not happen immediately – it can in fact take up to a year.  We will keep you posted on any further developments. In the meantime the MBYBC is the legal tenant…

Donation from RS Diving

On 01 December 2017 the Development Section of the MBYBC had the honor to welcoming Mr Lucky Nhlanhla Mbatha and Mr Oliver Schulz from RS Africa Diving and RS Diving Contractor who handed over a donation of R 5000 together with shirts, base caps and sweets. The Vessel from the company is presently alongside in the port. It is the Diving Support Vessel “RS Sentinel” which is currently operating in Mossel Bay.

Sailing Festival & Dart WP Championship

Over the past weekend the Dart 18 Western Cape Championships were held. Though the 10 boats were mostly local sailors we had sailors come down from Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. The Saturdays racing consisted of short “round the barrel” racing, even though the sailors had to wait for wind the Mossel Bay sea breeze did not disappoint with a breeze of 15 to 18 knots from the South. The race committee got 5 races in that included some extreme capsizes and unfortunately boat breakages. By the end of the Day Tammy Holden and Gerhard van Niekerk were leading with point score of 6, Daleen Naude and Pieter De Villiers in second with Chris van Zyl and Dewan van Niekerk in third.

War on the Shore Kayak Fishing Competition

This competition is organised by the Western Cape Kayak Angling Club (WCKAC) who mostly launch their craft at Three Anchor Bay near Greenpoint.

This seems to have been the first “War on the Shore” as last year the event was cancelled due to bad weather – as far as I heard.

The event was to happen on Saturday 12 August 2017 and from the Southern Cape Kayak Angling Club (SCKAC) 5 representatives as well as an “impact player” who resides in Somerset West were to represent our region. Two from Oudtshoorn, one from Knysna and two MBYBC members namely Jacques Theart and Jauckie Viljoen.

Main Committee Report 2017

The 2016/2017 season has been one of very mixed emotions. High on everyone’s thoughts is obviously the situation with the lease. This is ongoing and is currently in a legal process so not too much can be said but I will expand a bit later in this report. The club is growing, during this season 89 new members joined the even with the lease cloud hanging over the club. This brings our membership to 617 paid up members. The sporting sections have been very active with provincial, national and world championships taking place from the club as well as regular pool leagues.

SAILING REPORT APRIL 2017

The month of April was very busy with a number of events taking place at the club and on the waters of the Bay. Weather conditions were mostly favourable and great sailing was had by all who ventured out to enjoy the last of the summer weather. An inter-schools regatta was held at the club on the 1st and 2nd April for schools from Mossel Bay, George and Knysna with a total of 18 junior sailors attending. The junior team from Milkwood  came 1st out of  11 schools  and senior learners from Soa Bra  came 3rd overall in their section. …

The Season 2016/2017

Dear members and friends of the MBYBC, We have come to the end of the “silly season” in Mossel Bay and we have had a chance to look back at the season to see how it has gone. This season has had the cloud of the lease hanging over it but in spite of this we have had an amazing season. The security and member’s access worked very well this year with the introduction of a private security company to monitor the gates, members were treated to a well-controlled club. The club grounds were kept in really good order by…

ABYC - Port Elizabeth's Friendly Sailing Club

ABYC Building Closed

7 March 2018

ABYC 5O5 Sailors Lounge

On Friday morning 2 March 2018 the Transnet Ports Authority (TNPA) evicted the 60 year-old Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) from premises they occupied within the Port.

Effectively the club administration moved to other temporary premises whilst The Chartroom Restaurant and Pub ceased to exist.

A long standing dispute over unfair rental increases led to the eviction.

During 2009 ABYC laid a formal complaint with the Port Regulator over TNPA’s unfair treatment. The long standing dispute led to TNPA charging a higher rental whilst ABYC paid a lower rental.

TNPA have not taken ABYC to court over the disputed rental – the rental determination is still to be heard by the Port Regulator during March 2018 at a hearing in Durban for the 2009 complaint.

In a Facebook post announcing the eviction ABYC said;

Our thanks and love to everyone who has supported us through this long and oftentimes bewildering time.

Of course we are left with more questions than answers and some of us have taken this very hard.

Please bear with us as we chart our way through these rocky waters, regroup and give thanks for the respite from having to ensure that we had enough money in the bank to pay our rent and other obligations.

Freed from the undue pressure to run a ‘commercial venture’ we are happy to report that we are now in a stronger position to foster, promote and administer sailing in line with our obligations to South African Sailing and sailors in general.

THE FUTURE:

The future holds some promise for members and the sport. We have received a number of offers from concerned citizens to accommodate our members and club. We are still the link between sailors and South African Sailing, we still administer Boat Licenses and Safety Inspections, we still have the ability and manpower to run regattas and continue to showcase our Algoa Bay as a fine sailing venue.

Yachting (Sailing) in South Africa | Leisure and Employment Hub

yacht clubs south africa

Blessed with a long coastline, South Africa is home to numerous beaches and yacht clubs. Yes, there are yacht clubs in South Africa and port cities in SA are rife with yachts. While the international yacht scene is not as prominent in South Africa, there are many local yachting activities you would never want to miss.

Yachting Clubs in South Africa

South Africa is blessed with warm (Indian Ocean) and cold (Atlantic Ocean) oceans, prominently due to the Agulhas Current and Benguela Current respectively. Due to this geographical condition, South African coasts provide unique sailing experiences.

Fun Read : Ocean Current Types and Meaning

Every major port city in South Africa is rife with yacht clubs. They are always happy and enthusiastic about having new friendly faces around. If you are in South Africa looking for some yachting experience, make sure to visit one of the yacht clubs. Most of these yacht clubs will also allow non-members to enjoy their fine-dine services with great views, or limited yachting-related activities. Make sure you contact them beforehand to understand their requirements.

Some of the well-known yacht clubs in South Africa:

  • Knysna Yacht Club
  • False Bay Yacht Club
  • Zululand Yacht Club
  • Langebaan Yacht Club
  • Point Yacht Club

IMPORTANT: 8 Questions to ask yourself before joining a Yacht Club by TheLadders

Yachting Employment Opportunities in South Africa

Though not as demanding as the international yacht scene, South Africa does need deckhands and stewardesses on their yachts. Of course, don’t expect to work on a superyacht in South Africa. It is rare to have a sight of a superyacht docked in South Africa as they are mainly prominent in the Mediterranean and Caribbean regions.

However, if you meet all the standard requirements , you too can work on a yacht in South Africa.

National v/s International Yachting Scene

It can be a pleasant experience working with the South African people. Also, another advantage would be staying close to your home. You would be away from your home for a week at max. Staying close to family and friends is essential for most of us. That is also why international deckhand jobs are unique in their own way. The commitment is harsher.

However, an international deckhand job on a superyacht would definitely pay you more than a national one. Why? Because they get paid in dollars or euros, depending on the region. An average entry-level deckhand earns around 2500$ per month or 30000$ on the minimum side . Additionally, there are tips that are distributed equally amongst other crew. In South Africa, an ordinary deckhand’s salary is R227,252 according to SalaryExpert .

Whether you want to work in an international yacht scene or a national one is up to you. However, if you ask us, working on a yacht in South Africa first would actually help you build up your resume with some quality experience. Internationally, getting employment on a yacht is extremely competitive as candidates from all over the world apply for it.

Besides, searching for international employment itself can be expensive. You are expected to visit these “superyacht hubs” and do “dock walking” to personally meet yacht owners to find employment. This means you will have to mind travel, visa, and accommodation expenses during the trip, which can set you back a fortune if not less.

For more information, we advise you to read these articles below:

Best Seasons to find Entry-Level Deckhand Work

Finding Entry-Level Deckhand Work

Even though not as gigantic, South Africa has a century-long yachting culture that is still strong today. Whether it is to experience yachting culture or find a job as a deckhand, South Africa can be one of your go-to places. Experience different regions of South Africa, warmer or colder ocean sailing, and much more.

If you wish to work on a yacht in South Africa, feel free to give us a call. We can help correct your course to becoming a deckhand or stewardess in South Africa in no time. All we ask from you is your time and commitment!
