2019 Voyager V930 Mk2 review

A terrific new multi-function cruising/fishing powered catamaran from boutique australian boat builder, voyager catamarans.

Gold Coast-based Voyager Catamarans has given its long-running V930 powered catamaran a full makeover, redesigning the deck and interior of this four-berth cruiser with a smarter, more practical open plan layout. With power from a pair of Suzuki fly-by-wire 250hp V6 four-stroke outboards, this big, smooth-riding, high-tunnel powered cat is no slouch either, accelerating to a 40-knot top speed.

Voyager Catamarans has operated from the northern Gold Coast region for almost two decades. The company, headed by managing director Derek Appleton, is best known for its innovatively designed powered cruising catamarans.

The Voyager range encompasses half a dozen or so models from 6.0-13.0 metres. You'll find several of these craft reviewed here on Boatsales.com.au, the most recent being my 2015 review of Voyager's excellent entry model, the Voyager V625 Getaway .

At the top of the Voyager catamaran boat range there are three semi-displacement, shaft-drive cruisers. They include the V1040 Explorer , the V1100 Discovery Flybridge, and the superb V1220 Conquest.

voyager v930 mk2 7407

In between the trailerable 6.0m V625 and the three large, shaft-drive cruising cats is the subject of this review, the V930 Mk2. This outboard-powered, high-speed catamaran launched originally in 2002 , but has now received a complete deck and interior redesign.

The V930's high-tunnel, wave breaker-equipped catamaran hull, designed originally by naval architect Paul Stanyon, remains unchanged.

All the work in the new model has concentrated on the deck and interior. The new model is not only a whole lot better looking, but significantly more practical, and more functional and versatile.

The original boat was predominantly a bay cruiser, overnighter and weekender. The layout in the new Voyager V930 Mk2 is more multipurpose, ideally suited to family cruising, but also well capable of being set-up for coastal fishing and offshore game fishing.

Price and equipment

The V930 is available with three levels of fit-out, although the features and gear fitted to each version is interchangeable between models. You might be happy with the level of fit-out in the standard Sportsman model, for example, but may want to add a feature or two from one of the higher grade boats such as the power inverter and battery system to gain 240-volt power.

voyager v930 mk2 7485

Package pricing starts at less than $280K for the standard boat paired with dual Suzuki 175hp extra-longshaft (25-inch) counter-rotating outboards.

Key design features include four berths in three cabins, a walk-in, standing-room head and shower compartment, hardtop-sheltered helm station, dinette seating area, starboard side galley, and an open plan saloon/cockpit layout.

Open plan layouts don't suit everybody so there is the option to completely enclose the saloon, separating it from the rear cockpit with a full height rear bulkhead with lockable bifold entry doors.

All Voyager V930 models feature solid fibreglass construction (equivalent to 2C Survey standard) below the waterline, with light weight composite materials used to core the topsides, deck and hardtop. This technique saves weight, whilst retaining structural strength. With these weight-saving measures, the dry weight of the boat is only around 3500kg, allowing for excellent performance and economy from modest-size outboard engines.

voyager v930 mk2 7334

The second tier model in the V930 line-up is the Sports Cruiser. Priced from $311K, the Voyager V930 Sports Cruiser gains a number of features over the standard boat, along with a power upgrade to dual Suzuki 200hp outboards.

Some of the extra features include an electric anchor winch, opening saloon and bathroom ceiling hatches, insect screens throughout, hot water system, transom shower, 300L water tank upgrade (from 150L), fuel tank upgrade to 700L (from 500L), hardtop grab rails, aft canopy and storm covers, and lift-out cockpit carpet.

Our test boat was the Voyager V930 Grand Sport, the premium model equipped with all the good gear, including an engine upgrade to dual 250hp Suzuki V6 four-strokes with fly-by-wire digital controls.

Our test package also gained the aforementioned power inverter, along with a shore-power hook-up facility, multiple batteries with battery charger and monitor, stone-look bench tops to vanity and galley, duel wipers, electric cooktop, vinyl padded ceiling linings, extended swim platform with security rails, two-piece transom stainless steel and acrylic transom gate, cockpit side door, additional lights to the cockpit and interior, and lots more.

voyager v930 mk2 7240

Priced frolm $343K, the Grand Sport model comes complete and fully outfitted for overnight and weekend cruising.

For offshore fishing, factory options include a choice of electronics gear, plumbing to one or both of the transom live bait tanks, an overhead rocket launcher, a pair of outriggers, saltwater deck wash, cockpit coaming bolster padding, a fuel capacity upgrade to dual 450-litre tanks, and maybe a cutting board and set of tackle drawers.

Design and layout

The Voyager V930 has an open plan deck layout with the large, 1.72-metre-long cockpit on the same level as the saloon. There is a lip on the floor between the two areas to keep water out of the interior, but otherwise you can walk under the optional aft bimini and into the open saloon unimpeded.

Stepping into the saloon you'll find an L-shaped three/four-seater dinette to port with comfortable vinyl padded cushioned seating and a beautifully varnished timber table.

The galley opposite has a sink with mixer tap, a 12-volt 80L fridge/freezer and sufficient cupboard and drawer space for cutlery and crockery. Panty space is minimal, but there is a food locker alongside the fridge.

voyager v930 mk2 7568

Our test boat was optioned with a stone-look galley bench top, a single burner electric cooktop, and hot and cold running water fed by an upgraded 300-litre freshwater tank.

A 240-volt power socket is nearby to run an electric jug or toaster.

Forward of the galley on the starboard side is the elevated helm station. The comfortable bucket chair slides fore and aft and can rotate sideways to face the crew and family members seated opposite on the L-shaped lounged. The layout works well as the skipper can join in the conversation while underway.

I found the helm seat to be ideally positioned before the large dash and fascia, and it is elevated up high for excellent visibility through the three-piece glass windshield and the surrounding sliding glass windows.

The helm is designed to drive while seated, but tall skippers can stand before the wheel with their head poking up through the starboard side ceiling ventilation hatch. In the test boat a similar hatch was situated in the hardtop on the port side. Both are optional on the entry package.

voyager v930 mk2 7547

From the helm the optional wood-trimmed steering wheel is nicely positioned with the binnacle throttles for the dual Suzuki outboards close by.

The large, near vertical fascia has ample space for all the required engine gauges and instruments as well as a single, flush-fitted electronics multifunction display.

A separate panel underneath houses the VHF radio and stereo head unit.

The fascia is blacked out for aesthetics and to counter sun glare and reflection. We would also recommend fitting a dark matte carpet on the dash up under the windscreen as the standard white fibreglass finish reflects off the windscreen in the noon sunlight.

The dash reflection is the only thing to make note of in the saloon area as the space is otherwise practical and very functional for both cruising families and offshore anglers. The absence of a saloon/cockpit bulkhead may not suit everyone (and there is the option to enclose it) but I like it as there is no segregation between the two areas. Further, it is ideal for anglers as the skipper and crew can see what is happening in the aft cockpit whilst trolling lures or baits for game fish, etc.

Cabin and accommodation

Forward of the helm station bulkhead and the dinette seating area are three steps on each side of the boat that lead down into the port and starboard side hull sponsons. On this lower level there are three separate cabins and a walk-in head compartment/bathroom.

voyager v930 mk2 7630

The master stateroom is in the forepeak of the boat on the starboard side. Inside there is a 1.97m long double bed that tapers in width from 1.75m down to about 1.35m. It will comfortably cater for a couple.

There is more than 1.8m of headroom from the sole to the ceiling in the master cabin, with 869mm above the double bed. Other features include cabin reading lights, shelf with mirror, an overhead lighting/ventilation hatch (which also provides access to the foredeck), opening port hole, hanging cupboard, and soft vinyl linings to the cabin sides and ceiling.

The walk-in, standing room bathroom is located opposite on the port side. The compartment is spacious, easy to access, and equipped with an electric toilet, vanity basin with chrome mixer tape, overhead shower, mirror, towel rail, storage lockers, 12-volt lighting and an open ventilation port hole.

voyager v930 mk2 7644

Our test boat was also optioned with a clear, opening ventilation hatch in the bathroom ceiling.

Abaft the bathroom on the port side, and the master cabin on the starboard there are two cabins, each with a single berth. The cabins are situated beneath the saloon floor, and stretch fore and aft. These cabin compartments are modest in size, but the single berths contained therein are each more than 2.0m long and more than 935mm in width.

Versatile cockpit

The large self-draining rear cockpit in the Voyager V930 is designed to serve cruising boaters and anglers equally well. Two huge sub-floor lockers are ideal for storing big fenders, snorkeling gear, and more.

I'd be hesitant to use these big underfloor lockers as fish boxes because they also contain the ship's house and engine cranking batteries. Instead, I'd consider dropping a removable Nalley box into one or both of the compartments and using these to stow the day's catch.

voyager v930 mk2 7223

More storage compartments surround the cockpit, along with a set of terminal fishing tackle storage drawers behind a So-Pac hatch on the port side.

Other features include more than 800mm of freeboard to the cockpit sides, 110mm wide side coamings, and full-walkthrough access with a platform extending aft, out past the two big Suzuki outboards. This rear platform has stainless steel rail fencing and a well designed, folding stainless boarding ladder.

Anglers will appreciate the two big live bait tanks (plumbing optional) built into the transom corners, but may bemoan the exposed position of the stern cleats that sit proud of the coamings -- recessed or hidden cleats are better for fishing.

On the water

It was great to get back behind the wheel of a powered catamaran. A cat underway at sea is quite different to a monohull, though it takes only a few minutes to re-adjust to the differences in pitch and roll between the two vastly different hull types.

The Voyager V930 has a particularly fine high-speed catamaran hull. It planes easily at just 10 or 11 knots with barely any rise in the bows. It just slides seamlessly, imperceptibly from displacement to planing speeds, the big Suzuki four-stroke outboard engines purring away in the background.

voyager v930 mk2 7352

A low planing speed, combined with a flat, level running angle is perfect for long-range offshore cruising as the boat can run softly, comfortably, and most importantly, economically through big seas and rough conditions. While the boat can plane at a low pace, there is no need to make constant, fuel-burning throttle adjustments. You can simply set the throttles, sit back and relax.

This excellent low-speed cruising capability is a fine characteristic of the Voyager V930, but it will certainly get up and go when prodded. With dual Suzuki 250hp four-stroke outboards on the transom the Voyager will throw you back in your seat when the throttles are gunned, and it will continue to accelerate strongly right through to its 40-knot top speed.

In choppy seas, the hull's finely drawn bow sponsons combine with the wave breaker-equipped high tunnel to provide a soft, comfortable ride at low and high speeds.

We did not encounter any of the "sneezing" or shuddering issues problematic with many low tunnel cats.

voyager v930 mk2 7280

The Voyager V930 was also surprisingly dry underway and exceptionally stable at rest.

I was not enamoured with the hydraulic steering on the test boat (it felt a bit stiff), but in every other aspect the big Voyager performed exceptionally well at sea.

Maximum range on 95% of 700L fuel supply: 279.5nm @ 3500rpm

The Voyager V930 Mk2 is a more practical, better looking boat than its predecessor, and a very fine multifunction cruiser/fishing boat in its own right. It has all the onboard amenities you need for overnighting and long range offshore fishing, combined with a soft riding, seaworthy, easily driven hull form.

There are few, if any craft like the Voyager on the market at present, which in itself is something of an anomaly. There should be more of them. Powered catamarans make for excellent all-rounder cruising/fishing boats. I expect more boaters will come to this realisation once the good word on this new Voyager V930 Mk2 gets about.

Voyager V1270

Voyager V1270

Bon Voyage....er

Each new model in the Voyager range is an evolution of the previous model but unlike most evolutionary processes – in the case of the Voyager models they are poles apart in styling and layout concept – refreshingly different so as to capably address the requirements and expectations of an audience that will purchase that particular size of vessel.

That aspect more than any other is perhaps the secret ingredient in Voyager Catamarans MD Derek Appleton’s armoury for far from being just an extended and maximised version of the earlier model, each of his ‘evolution’ of models was a stand-alone model designed specifically for that next level of ‘audience’ it was purposefully designed for. Extend/expand a vessel and it always comes up short, design a vessel from scratch as Appleton did in conjunction with respected designers Oceanic Design, and it will authentically address the requirements and expectations of that style and size of vessel.

While each of Appleton’s previous designs were aimed in varying degrees, at addressing the ‘family’ ideal of weekend or extended-stay boating, this latest Voyager V1270 Freedom Power Catamaran is designed and built to comprehensively address the requirements of the long-range ‘cruising’ boater. Everything is built around the KISS (Keep It Simple Silly) principal of user-friendly and above all maintenance-friendly layout and ‘appropriate’ specification, but in true Appleton tradition the concept is intermingled with innovation, engineering and construction methods that will surely ‘stand the vessel out in the crowd’.

Being from an engineering background he has also placed special emphasis on the mechanical side of the vessel also. The very basis of a good cruising package, hand in hand with efficient hull design goes economical power and as in his previous models Appleton has again opted for the Steyr mode of power.

voyager catamarans

The more cynical would perhaps suggest that the power-plants in the form of twin 190hp diesels would be way underdone for a 40-plus-footer, but these 3200cc 6-cylinder 190hp turbocharged and intercooled MO196K35 Steyr diesels driving through ZF gearbox and conventional shaft drive to ZF Faster propellers – provide not only a respectable top speed of 23 knots but more importantly an impressive cruising speed of anything from 17 to 20 knots.

Illustrating then as graphically as you care to admit, the up-side of the catamaran configuration is not only the accrued stability factor from the twin hulls and massive beam of 6.67 metres, but also this all-important efficiency factor that allows a meagre 380hp to push a vessel along at an all-day efficient cruise speed of 17 to 20 knots, using only around 35 to 45lt/hr.

voyager catamarans

Another very influencing factor within this efficiency equation is the weight of the vessel, 12.7 metres in length and this vessel that is constructed of a ‘moulded’ composite of balsa, foam and multi-axial fibreglass – weighs in at just 8,500kg lightships. Top up your 1700 litres of fuel and 700 litres of water, and you still have a ‘heavy ships’ package of around 10 tonnes, which is a most impressive statistic in a 40-footer.

Typical Catamaran Interior – Or Is It?

When you first take the easy steps aboard the Voyager, courtesy of the virtually water-level platforms each side that step you up onto the main bridge-deck level, initial observations suggest this is yet another typically ‘catamaran’ layout. Generous sized teak-covered rear cockpit (as were the steps up to it), plenty of space to laze around on; the one really noticeable item perhaps being the starboard-side step structure up to the flybridge level that while simple in build, was none the less innovative in that these were facing aft rather than the traditional forward-facing at the top – very non-intrusive into cockpit space!

Investigate closer however and noticeable were nice touches such as the Aqualuma underwater lights, the moulded steps that invited you up to the walkway for’ard, the full flybridge overhang that provided perfect shelter from mother nature be it the sun or the rain, and the two huge rear stainless steel pillars adjoining the  central boarding platform. The obvious question was why so substantial, the not so obvious response from Appleton, “We wanted this rear platform to be a raise and lower feature so as to maximise boarding capabilities either when bathing or when alighting from or launching the tender. I put my engineering cap on and came up with this electric/cable lift system inside these columns, which effortlessly raises and lowers this whole central platform assembly. Up high it is out of the way when underway, flick the switch and it extends down to well below the waters surface!” he explained.

voyager catamarans

Step inside the saloon and I quickly appreciated just how misleading my first impressions were. Yes it was your traditional sailing-style wide but not deep saloon layout with steps either side that led down to the accommodation provision below, but that was where the similiarity with traditional catamarans ended. Yes there was the eye-catching dining feature central and across the front bulkhead, but the most obvious break with convention was the upstairs galley. A lot of thought and emphasis had obviously been put into this saloon for while there was now this galley to starboard as well as an entertainment module come refrigeration module opposite to port, both these features were certainly not intrusive or inhibiting in the context of actual saloon space.

voyager catamarans

And may I add neither lacked anything when it came to appropriate features, with the galley boasting appropriate long-range cruising features such as two-burner gas stove, twin S/S sinks, convection microwave oven, sensible-sized freezer, an island bar and generous Corian bench tops and storage space. The entertainment module opposite housed the fridge also, which incidentally whilst on the other side of the saloon was still in close proximity to the galley. The top of this module served nicely as a bar/chart table also. The bi-fold entry doors as well as the opening windows above each of these rear modules, provided the necessary ventilation and natural light as well of course as the mandatory 360-degree visibility.

Something Quite different

The other really neat feature of this saloon area was the ‘feature’ that led you down to the accommodation areas below. Yes the starboard side was the traditional ‘sudden’ drop down three steps to that level below, but the port side was a very different matter – a classy example of innovation and practicality. Without the typical intrusion of the downstairs galley, the designers have utilised the now-available amidships space by providing a respectable-sized bathroom. Neatly shaped and offset steps lead you down to this level and you either turn left at the bottom (of the steps) and go aft to the rear bedroom, or you turn right and disappear into this bathroom that features separate shower and head (Jabsco Deluxe Quiet). It certainly was refreshingly expansive, in the context of a downstairs ‘house’ bathroom!

Another set of stairs on the bow side of this module led you down to what in this particular four-bedroom configuration was the little cherubs room. Two single mattresses fitted cross-ways onto what in effect was just a big flat platform, but just a quickly as it was two single berths a bit of foresight has allowed these mattresses to be turned around and placed fore and aft together, to quickly transform into another queen-size berth. Features in here included wardrobe, storage drawers, lighting, overhead hatch and a built-in low-boy. Décor, as was the case throughout the vessel, was a delightful contrast of padded vinyl panels, gelcoat finishes and generous splatterings of Makore wood-work – very tastefully presented!

voyager catamarans

The huge ‘master’ bedroom for’ard in the starboard hull was yet another break with catamaran tradition, and yet again was presented yes, rather opulently. And innovatively too, for while it certainly looked the part the designers have been able to include a lot of standard features that undeniably complement an extended-cruise situation. The queen-size berth in this instance lay on the diagonal; very easy to make but more importantly very easy in this instance to get in and out of bed.

Other special features in this room included a ‘make up’ vanity and large mirror, full-length wardrobe, television, overhead hatch, and recessed mini settee opposite the bed – and of course the private ensuite ‘scalloped’ into the bow of the boat. Some wag at the recent Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was heard to comment that he could live full time in this ensuite – “Your bride could bring you your meals, you can do your ablutions, you can wash your clothes in the washer/dryer that was recessed into the front bulkhead, at a pinch you could sleep on the pottie, and best of all a ventilation hatch off to the side and virtually at water level would allow you to ‘hang a line over the side’ – what more could you want?” Yes, his imagination was running wild, but the hatch certainly did add a new dimension to this head!

The bane of a significant number of catamarans is the lack of space allocated to the rear accommodation. Often these rooms are claustrophobic, in under the sole of the boat, and often there is no room to change or do whatever else you do in a bedroom. In this instance however I was pleased to note that the aft passengers are not considered second-rate citizens for virtually the same amount of accommodation provision had been afforded inhabitants of these well lit and ventilated rear quarters.

Granted yes it would have been a little harder to ‘make’ the double-size bed but there certainly was enough room to stand up and change, with the door shut incidentally so as to provide a modicum of privacy. Other features in there included storage provision, a mini-seat, a low-boy, a half wardrobe, an overhead hatch and opening portlight, lighting and the same attention to detail in the décor department.

There are many perhaps one-eyed ‘observers’ who would suggest a 40-foot catamaran room-wise is the equivalent of a 50-foot monohull, and in this instance I would tend to agree with them. As well as the inherent stability of the catamaran, efficiency dramatically influences the equation also for I would venture to suggest there wouldn’t be too many 40-50 foot monohulls around that would have a top speed of 23 knots and a cruise speed of 17-20 knots – delivered by just 380hp.

Engineering on this vessel was impressive, as was innovation – the single most important ingredient that sorts the good boats out from the also-rans. Specification was high throughout the vessel, none moreso than the engine-mounted integrated flywheel generator on the Steyr engine that provided appropriate on-board power (through the 1000Amp hours of battery banks) for the entire 12V system including the convection oven and washing machine that ran through the Zantrax 2500/130 inverter/charger.

While the comprehensively-equipped flybridge level was the traditional home away from home while at sea, and the bow feature was the usual thrill-seekers playground courtesy of the catamaran concept, for me the best part of this whole package was undeniably the price of the Voyager 1270 Freedom power catamaran. Lacking only the luxury perhaps of air-conditioning (it certainly is however an optional extra that is available), the on-water price of this particular example, of under a million dollars – I believe is certainly value for money!

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Voyage bought the factory of Norseman and Mayotte (from Fred Scholtz) in 1996 and re-named and re-structured those catamarans to Voyage catamarans and more suited to the charter market. The Norseman moulds were primarily used for the first Voyage 430 of which was succeeded by the Voyage 440. Similarly the Mayotte 47 moulds were used to produce the Voyage 500. Other designs include a 380, 400, 580. In the early 2000’s, they were manufacturing about 45 to 50 catamarans per year in Cape Town, South Africa. The 440 was the first catamaran to win the overall Cruising Boat of the Year award in 2002.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

voyager catamarans

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

voyager catamarans

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

voyager catamarans

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

voyager catamarans

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

voyager catamarans

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

voyager catamarans

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

voyager catamarans

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

A military tour – riding on tanks in Stupino (Moscow region)

Russian Military is one of the largest military forces in the world formed in 1992. With my Military Tour experience what it likes to be in the Russian military, shooting guns, ride the Tank T-34 and various models of German tanks from the Second World War, as well as armored personnel carriers and vehicles. You will also shoot from the AK-47 and another combat weapon.

The tour will begin with your private tour guide Moscow in a Soviet army van accompanied with some tasty snacks and tea for a tasty start. Upon arriving, you will have to put on the army safety clothing and climb the Russian armored vehicles. The tour will take you on the noisy, smoky tank, driving through mud roads. All participants will get the chance to drive the tank which is coordinated by the Russian military.
