Axe Yacht Club

458253 x250

The club has a membership engaged in a wide range of activities, dinghy sailing, cruiser sailing and motor boats/fishing. The club has just over 100 pontoon moorings and can accommodate a substantial number for launch and retrieve from a slip located in the harbour. Dinghy sailing can be enjoyed on the sea with beach launched boats and on the river Axe when tides allow. The club has an active cadet section with regular activities throughout the year.

Activities Afloat organise a comprehensive programme of sailing races locally in the river or off shore and passage races for the cruiser fleet with the motor boat section organising fishing competitions. All of this is supported by a range of social activities in the excellent club house located on the beach.

The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and is RYA approved to provide a range of shore based and on water courses. Courses are dependant on numbers enrolling and instructor availability.

Members of the club are involved in all aspects of the running of the club and giving time to the club is a requirement of membership. Volunteering is also a great way to meet other members of the club and exchange some fishy tales.

The club is well equipped with a boat lift, member’s workshop, outboard motor store, support boats and dinghies for cadet use. Power is available in the yard to enable boat maintenance to be carried out as required.

Please look around the website for more details of the club and, if you are not a member and wish to join, download the application form below and post it to the Membership Secretary at the address given on the form. What happens next is that you will normally receive an acknowledgement on receipt, by email if one is supplied so please check junk mail folders. As well as your application being displayed in the Clubhouse for 14 days, you will also be invited to an informal meeting with some of the Committee members, usually at 19:30 on the last Thursday of the month in the clubhouse. Please contact the Membership Secretary directly by phone or email if you’ve not heard anything within a week of posting the form.

Introduction

axe yacht club classifieds

Invariably each summer the boats return to Cornwall to sail on the Fowey, Fal and Helford Rivers and attend Fowey Classics. The small fleet of  dinghies invariably attract attention, the sight of varnished dinghies cannot help but draw inquiring and admiring comments.

By coincidence, rather than any specific ruling each of the boats has adopted the same colour scheme – varnished topsides with cream coloured paint below the waterline. This now makes telling them apart somewhat difficult when drawn up on the beach together! Although Swallow was the odd one out, having had a painted interior. She has now joined the rest of the fleet following her 2019/20 winter refit, all traces of paint removed.

The original sails were white cotton, however the class has now adopted cream coloured (champagne) sails throughout, with the panels cut to half width, reflecting the narrower panels of the old original sails.

In todays world of modern performance dinghies we are fortunate to retain our indigenous one design class. So many others have disappeared, had Whimbrel not survived then a similar fate would have faced the AODs. The resurgence of the class came with the building of Shearwater in 2000; some 35 years after the last AOD to be built in the 1960s. Her building inspired other local sailors to take that step and with the restoration of two other original boats, the class re-established itself. The AODCA is aware of only three original  boats –  No.s 1,6 & 8, (all sailing at Axmouth), should there be any other survivors unknown to us then we would dearly like to hear of them.

Since 2005 the A.Y.C. has organised a separate class series for the A.O.D.s within the summer River Races. Appropriately the Axe Ones now race for the Jack Drew Cup  donated by Jack in 1960. We are indebted to him for his enthusiasm and attention to detail in designing and establishing such an incredibly pretty and pleasurable boat to sail.

In 2023 we celebrated the AODs 70th, a very successful jubilee regatta. To mark the occasion, Rene Drew presented a new trophy – the 70th Anniversary Cup – (see news section for details) . Construction of a new AOD continues steadily (No.25), she will be the 10th boat to join the fleet. Launching is anticipated early in the coming 2024 season.

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

axe yacht club classifieds

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

A Guide for Visitors and New Members

A Warm Welcome

The Commodore and all members of the Axe Yacht Club welcome you and hope that you enjoy the facilities we offer. A particular feature of the Club is that it is maintained and operated by volunteers from across the membership. This self-help ethos is the essence of AYC and over the years has significantly reduced the cost of projects and maintenance. This has enabled the Club to keep the cost of being a member of AYC low compared with other harbours. Giving time to the Club is a requirement of membership and volunteering is also a great way to meet other members of the Club. Volunteering at AYC .

The affairs of the Club are managed by the Executive Committee , which is chaired by the Commodore. Club activities are overseen by three Rear Commodores (Activities Afloat, Harbour Services, & Social). They are supported by a number of sub-committees and this enables as many members as possible to be involved in the day-to-day running of the Club from the grass roots up. The Club currently has over 900 members.

AYC members enjoy a very wide range of water-based activities; racing, cruising, dinghy sailing, day boating, angling, power-boating, scuba diving, water ski-ing, kayaking and surfing. Having a membership with such a broad range of boating interests is a huge strength of AYC and sets us apart from many other clubs. See Activities Afloat for more details.

The Harbour Services team of volunteers provide invaluable knowledge, skill and hard work to help maintain the facilities we all enjoy including the mooring basin, pontoons, boatyard, and clubhouse. The Club is well equipped with a boat lift, member's workshop, and outboard motor store. Power and water points are available. The Bosun is contracted to provide general marine services for the Club including maintenance dredging over the winter months. The Harbour Services team headquarters is adjacent to the slipway and is known affectionately as 'Fred's Shed'. See Harbour Services for more information.

Social Programme

The Club's activities afloat are supported by a full programme of social events - see Social Programme . The Bar is open every Friday evening and Sunday lunchtime throughout the year. During the season, it is also usually open on Saturday evenings. A flag is flown from the flagpole in front of the race hut at the east end of the clubhouse when the bar is open.

The Clubhouse offers a stunning view across Lyme Bay framed by the cliffs of Beer Head. It is open to members 24 hours a day with access controlled by an electronic fob. In addition to showers/toilets and changing facilities, there is a large function room, a kitchen and a well-stocked Bar. See Clubhouse Facilities for more details. Sea state, wind direction and forecasts are displayed on a screen in the Clubhouse, together with another screen showing a Webcam view of the river entrance.

Family, Cadet & Young Person Membership

Whether your interest is sailing or motorboating, we aim to encourage the whole family to get out on the water and have fun. Family membership is available for one or two co-habiting adults & their children under the age of 18 years. A child aged 7-17 years may apply to join as a cadet member either in association with an adult member of their immediate family or as part of a family membership. There are currently approximately 100 cadet members. There is also a concessionary membership rate available for those aged 18 to 25 years. See Family Membership & Cadets .

Site Access

The Club leases the site, which extends from the roadway to the beach, from East Devon District Council. The Club holds a 28 year lease, effective from March 2017 and sublets an area of the yard to the Axe Vale Canoe Club .

axe yacht club classifieds

Vehicular access is via the main gate and barrier, which is operated by a key fob. Public pedestrian access to the beach is along the rear of the houses on Trevelyan Road, and for safety and security reasons we do not encourage wandering through the boatyard. The slipway is not generally available to non-members. The boatyard is crowded and busy when boating activities are in progress and extreme caution is required when walking, working or driving. A speed limit of 5mph is in force over the whole site .

Vehicle Parking

Above the beach area is the designated parking place and parking in the boatyard is prohibited except for off-loading. Members may obtain a parking permit from the membership secretary. This must be renewed each year and displayed clearly when parked at the Club. Overnight stays in vehicles or on boats in the yard are not permitted.

Yard Storage, Moorings and Slipways

There are around 105 moorings on the pontoons in the basin. These are all allocated to Club members and there is a waiting list. Access to the pontoons is controlled via the same electronic fob as the clubhouse and main gate, and this is programmed to each individual member's needs. For safety reasons, no BBQs are permitted on any boat or pontoon within the harbour. Moorings may only be occupied between April and October.

The large yard can accommodate a number of launch & retrieve boats and dinghies. Boats should be prepared for launch before arrival at the main slipway so as to make a quick getaway to avoid congestion. The small slipway can be used to launch and recover tenders and small dinghies when not in use by the Canoe Club. There is a designated dinghy parking area adjacent to the clubhouse. Dinghy sailors have the benefit of being able to sail on the Axe estuary as well as in Lyme Bay. Beach launching for dinghies is facilitated by a Gridforce ground re-inforcement system and matting laid over the shingle just to the east of the Clubhouse. A winch is available to help with recovery.

Using The Basin and Estuary

Boating in the basin, estuary and on the approaches requires considerable care because of strong currents of up to 5 kts, particularly during Spring tides, in moderate to strong winds and because of the shifting shingle bar just off the river mouth. General advice for harbour users is given for guidance only and the Club accepts no responsibility. Members & visitors using the Club and boating in and out of the River Axe do so entirely at their own risk and must carry third party insurance liability cover of £3,000,000 minimum. All harbour users are strongly advised to read the Pilotage notes - Axmouth Harbour Pilotage .

Club Dinghies & Support Boats

The Club owns a number of dinghies and support boats , which are available for use during organised sailing sessions. The Club dinghies allow members of all ages who are new to dinghy sailing to gain some basic skills, before considering buying their own boat.

Members are welcome to introduce up to three guests to the Club in any one day and should sign their guests in the Visitors book, which is on the shelf in the Clubhouse entrance. The same guest may not be introduced more than three times in any calendar year. Visitors are expected to obey the Club rules. Visitors arriving by sea should make prior arrangements by telephoning the Bosun James Widger on 07842-933610 or by emailing the Rear Commodore Harbour Services [email protected] and should visit Fred's Shed at the earliest opportunity after arrival at the main slipway pontoon to confirm their intentions and requirements. The Harbour Services team may be able to allocate a mooring where the current user is away for the night, at a cost of £15 per night.

RYA Training

The Club is affiliated to the RYA and offers RYA recognised shorebased training courses (VHF radio, diesel engine, first aid, yachtmaster, day skipper) and powerboat courses for members and non-members. Although the Club is a recognised training centre for dinghy sailing, due to the unpredictable nature of beach launching and the tidal nature of the river, we cannot offer formal RYA dinghy training courses in the same way that a commercial RYA sea school can. RYA coaching/certification weekends are organised at intervals.  See Training for more details.

Security and Safety

Although CCTV and lighting is installed on Club premises, members and visitors should be careful to secure their own property as the site is fairly open to access by the public. Basic First Aid kits are available in Fred's Shed and the Clubhouse. An automatic cardiac defibrillator has been installed outside the Clubhouse main entrance. Dial 999 for police, fire, ambulance or coastguard.

The '5yr Strategy to Develop Family Sailing' at AYC was put in place in 2012. This led to a 6% pa growth in Club membership, with cadet and student members currently making up ~13% of the total. The AYC Development Plan aims to build on the success of the 'Family Sailing' initiative and lays out the Club's ambitions & plans for the coming years. It is regularly reviewed and updated by the Executive Committee.

Club Ownership

Axe Yacht Club (AYC) is owned by its members. The principal assets are held in trust by the Trustees, but the Trustees have no authority to take any action without the authority of the club's Executive Committee. The Executive Committee have no authority to authorise any action with regards to the Club's principal assets without the approval of the membership by way of a General Meeting. The Club operates within a set of rules, bye-laws and policies which are consistent with model rules proposed by our regulatory body, the Royal Yachting Association. These Club Rules are all available on the website - Club Rule Book .
