“ Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminum sailing superyacht for her length: She rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts,” Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman said in a statement .
Nilaya ’s interior and exterior were executed by Nauta Design, while her naval architecture comes courtesy of Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design. This duo actually designed the owner’s maxi-racer of the same name. It’s not surprising, then, that the new sloop echoes her predecessor with a racy, low profile, a straight bow, a wide transom and twin rudders.
Royal Huisman conducted a careful weight analysis inside and out to ensure each part of Nilaya was crafted from the right lightweight material. The yard also utilized the carbon-fiber expertise of sister company Rondal. The curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit, for instance, were made from carbon composite. Nilaya ’s mast, boom and standing rigging are also carbon to keep the yacht’s weight as low and as centered as possible for optimal balance.
Onboard, the 154-footer can sleep between eight and 10 seafarers, along with eight crew. The interiors combine “a modern look with classic elegance” and are said to be light yet warm and welcoming.
Nilaya will reportedly be delivered to her owners in the coming months.

47m high-performance cruiser Nilaya delivered
Following successful sea trials on the north sea, nilaya has now departed from royal huisman’s facilities in amsterdam….
Royal Huisman Project 405 was transported earlier this year from the shipyard’s new-build facilities in preparation for launch and the installation of her carbon performance sloop rig by Rondal . She was christened Nilaya , which means ‘blissful home’, during a private event at Het Scheepvaartmuseum (the national maritime museum) in Amsterdam.
This highly anticipated Panamax superyacht is the first to utilise the shipyard’s new Featherlight™ design and production method. Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405, aka Reichel/Pugh – Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11 per cent off the weight of its typical advanced aluminium cruising yachts. Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser.
The shipyard’s revolutionary Featherlight™ method for this sailing machine is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic lightweight approach to yacht building combining various complementary weight-saving solutions utilising aluminum and carbon fibre components in order to deliver a cruising yacht that also will be competitive in superyacht racing events.
“For such a large yacht, the acceleration is exciting as she rapidly reaches high speeds,” says Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport, who served as owner’s project manager. “Twin rudders and the light, positive steering give superb manoeuverability and she has reached all her project targets with ease. Rondal’s sailing systems enable fingertip control of the massive loads involved.”
Nauta Design created the general concept, the exterior design and the interior design plan with the light, calm, contemporary décor that has been unpacked for the first time now that trials are complete. Ingram continues: “Below decks, life is as comfortable and quiet as one would expect of the latest performance cruiser from Royal Huisman. The builder’s efforts towards building a light and stiff structure have paid off.”
Nilaya is Nauta Design’s current sail division flagship, and after the sea trials Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design said: “This fantastic yacht showed to really match all of the quite demanding main aspects of the owner’s brief. Royal Huisman masterly succeeded in engineering and building the yacht, fulfilling the owner’s request in terms of robustness, reliability, quietness and, last but not least, amazing performance under sail, thanks to super high level naval architecture by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. Nilaya is not good … She is superb.”
Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman calls Nilaya ’s departure bittersweet. “We are always a bit sad to see one of our yachts sail away; it’s a bit like a child leaving home. At the same time, we are proud to have delivered another unique vessel, especially one that advances innovative engineering and build technology. Nilaya is a milestone in composite superyachts in the truest sense of the word and another fine example of Royal Huisman’s ability to provide owners with the ultimate expression of personal freedom. We wish her owners and all on board fair winds and following seas during both world cruising and many exciting regattas.”

Construction Update: Royal Huisman ‘Nilaya’
- By Yachting Staff
- February 7, 2023
Royal Huisman in the Netherlands says the 154-foot Panamax sloop Nilaya has left the construction hall in Vollenhove and is ready to have its rig installed in Amsterdam.
Nilaya is the first yacht being built with Royal Huisman’s Featherlight design and production method, which the yard says reduces weight by 11 percent, compared to typical aluminum cruising yachts. The result is achieved through finite-element analysis in the design, the use of varied Alustar aluminum plate thicknesses, frame spacing to maximize hull stiffness and the use of foam coring in interior structural members.
The coachroof and guest cockpit structure are built with a carbon composite, as are the foredeck’s recessed tender well and several other elements. Most of the deck hardware is titanium.
Rondal is responsible for the carbon fiber mast, boom and standing rigging. Nilaya will be the first yacht in its size range to use the structured luff sail design that Doyle Sails created. To take advantage of narrow headsail sheeting angles that are possible, Rondal created a curved carbon fiber spreader design that Royal Huisman says is shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available.
Naval architecture and design are by Reichel/Pugh and Nauta. The project manager is Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport.
“While the new Nilaya is meant to take the owners world cruising, he also asked for a boat with all the good habits of their previous racer, meaning responsiveness and excellent handling,” Ingram stated in a press release. “Royal Huisman was not afraid to invest in research to explore and develop all manner of innovative weight-saving possibilities. They really chased the details.”
When is Nilaya expected to be delivered to the owners? Sometime before the end of 2023.

Royal Huisman Unveils First 'Featherlight' Built S/Y NILAYA
By Emily Dawkins
After much anticipation, Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has revealed the revolutionary 46.8m sailing yacht NILAYA. Launched from the construction shed at the yard’s Vollenhove facilities in the Netherlands, NILAYA, previously known as Project 405 and Reichel/Pugh - Nauta 154, is the first aluminium superyacht built with Royal Huisman’s new ‘Featherlight’ design and construction method.
The launch of NILAYA marks a significant milestone for Royal Huisman, as with her build, the yard has achieved its goal of halving 11% of the weight of its usual advanced aluminium cruising yachts.
The reason for this? The shipyard’s trademarked ‘Featherlight’ construction method. Combining several weight-saving solutions, this new revolutionary build method takes a holistic approach to yacht building without sacrificing quality.
This trademarked Featherlight process utlisies Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a design method used within spacecraft technology, as a comprehensive approach to engineering and weight management, and in turn, creates a true, high-performance sailing yacht.
Complimented by naval architecture from Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design, exteriors and interiors from Nauta Design, and carbon fibre mast and sail rigging from Rondal, NILAYA is set to be a spectacular vessel. Not only cutting-edge in regard to her build process, she is also the first yacht of this size range to utilise structured luff sail design pioneered by Doyle Sails, which also makes for lighter cruising.
Mario Pedol from Nauta Design noted: ‘With Reichel/Pugh, we set the target weight. Royal Huisman really embraced the concept. It was a very good process, good collaboration.’
Built for a repeat Nauta Design client, NILAYA’s low and sporty profile is similar to that of her owner’s previous maxi-racer of the same name, also designed by Reichel/Pugh and Nauta: adorned with a straight bow, wide transom and twin rudders. NILAYA is the largest sailing yacht yet to be designed by Nauta.
Nigel Ingram from MCM Newport, the owners’ project manager throughout the build, commented: ‘While the new Nilaya is meant to take the owners world cruising, he also asked for a boat with all the ‘good habits’ of their previous racer, meaning responsiveness and excellent handling…Royal Huisman was not afraid to invest in research to explore and develop all manner of innovative weight-saving possibilities. They really chased the details.’
Notable features of NILAYA include her 17.5m curved carbon composite coachroof and guest cockpit structure and her recessed tender well on the foredeck which can transform into a seating area or flush deck.
Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman highlighted on what the build means to the yard: ‘The success of the innovations with Project 405 paves the way to use this bold new approach for future builds. I am proud of the investment we have made in advanced engineering and of the way teams from Royal Huisman and Rondal advanced new solutions to meet the brief from very knowledgeable clients and designers…Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminum sailing superyacht for her length: she rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts.’
The spectacular NILAYA is now on her way to Amsterdam in preparation for the installation of her towering rig. She will be delivered to her owners in the coming months.

NILAYA // Royal Huisman
Royal huisman unveiled the 47m sailing yacht nilaya aka project 405 aka nauta reichel pugh 151..
NILAYA (the name means blissful home) is a 47m lightweight sloop-rigged sailing yacht made of aluminum and carbon composite. The yacht weighs 11 percent less than typical aluminum cruising sailing yachts. Nauta Design delivered the exterior and the interior design, while the speed specialists Reichel/Pugh made the calculations. Even the owner’s professional racing team was involved. The carbon-fiber rig by Royal Huisman’s subsidiary Rondal has a Panamax height to cross the Panama Canal. The owner’s brief calls for a comfortable yacht with the potential to win superyacht regattas.
“And the owners did not just want to take delivery of such an intriguing yacht; they wanted to be part of the whole process of designing and building it, and enjoy every step of the way. Which is why from the moment of the project’s inception, the owners drew together the team that could realize this experience for them”
The yacht accommodates ten guests, including the owners and a crew of eight people.
Project 405 has been contracted remote
Due to the global COVID-19 situation, Royal Huisman contracted Project 405 with video conferencing between the owners, the design and development team, and the owners’ representative Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport.
Mario Pedol of Nauta Design reports back from the sea trials of Nilaya, the 47m Royal Huisman custom sailing yacht that is Nauta Design’s current sail division flagship: “ A full day in beautiful sunny and windy weather in the North Sea off Amsterdam showed how Nilaya’s performance under sail is truly outstanding ,” Pedol says. “ By the time the mainsail was hoisted, the breeze had built to a steady 18 knots. We sailed on a broad reach with the mainsail and Code Zero and rapidly reached a truly impressive 17 kt. boat speed. It was just the beginning of a great day of sailing with the Owner and all of the main players of his and the Builder’s teams. This fantastic yacht showed to really match all of the quite demanding main aspects of the Owners’ brief. Royal Huisman masterly succeeded in engineering and building the yacht, fulfilling the Owner’s request in terms of robustness, reliability, quietness, and last but not least, amazing performance under sail, thanks to super high-level Naval Architecture by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. ”

Nilaya is a new feather in Royal Huisman’s cap
Nilaya, the 46.8-metre panamax yacht under construction by Royal Huisman, has left the halls of Vollenhove and is on its way to Amsterdam for the installation of her towering rig. ( Here all our posts about Royal Huisman ).
The Featherlight™ revolution
This highly anticipated superyacht is the first to utilize Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight™ design and production method.
Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405 aka Reichel / Pugh – Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminum cruising yachts. Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser.
A holistic approach for Nilaya
The shipyard’s revolutionary Featherlight™ method for this 46.8m / 154-foot sailing machine is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic light weight approach combining various weight-saving solutions.
The Featherlight™ process makes use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a design methodology rooted in spacecraft technology. FEA modeling enabled selecting various construction materials and varied Alustar aluminum plate thicknesses and frame spacing to maximize hull stiffness while minimizing total displacement.
Perfect weight management
With engineering and weight management brought in-house, the approach was comprehensive, extending to lighting, insulation, and all mechanical systems. The interior, too, benefited from careful weight analysis. All interior structural members utilize lightweight foam coring. This innovative approach narrows the displacement gap between aluminum and carbon composite yachts. Comfortable, robust characteristics of an aluminum yacht are now a viable option for owners seeking true sailing performance. Nauta Design’s Mario Pedol noted that the choice of primary hull material did not fundamentally change the yacht’s layout or total weight. “With Reichel / Pugh, we set the target weight. Royal Huisman really embraced the concept. It was a very good process, good collaboration.”
Capturing the carbon fiber expertise of its sister company Rondal, Royal Huisman’s engineering team used this synergy to analyze and predict which structural components would be best made of composites or aluminum. For example, the entire 17.5m / 57-foot curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit structure are carbon composite. Likewise, the recessed tender well on the foredeck (that transforms to a seating area for cruising or a flush deck for racing) is also carbon composite as are a watertight bulkhead, crew entrance, twin rudders, the keel trunk and a cockpit bimini hardtop.
A rig of great balance for Nilaya
For any high-performance cruiser, a carbon fiber mast, boom, and standing rigging are critical to keeping weight as low and as centered as possible for optimal balance. While Rondal has considerable carbon spar expertise, bringing the design of this component — and the sailmaker – into the process during the larger hull design phase is a page out of a maxi-racer’s playbook.
Project 405 is also the first yacht of this size range designed to take advantage of structured luff sail design pioneered by Doyle Sails, a choice that allowed the entire Rondal mast, rig, and components to be lighter — a key point considering her Panamax air draft.
To take advantage of the very narrow headsail sheeting angles possible, Rondal created a radical new curved carbon fiber spreader design that is both shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available. Rondal also supplied new generation hybrid (carbon and aluminum) captive winches, hatches and various sail handling gear. Most deck hardware is titanium.
More Reichel/Pug and Nauta once more for the owner of Nilaya
Nilaya’s racy, low profile with its straight bow, wide transom, and twin rudders, echoes the look of her owners’ previous highly successful maxi-racer of the same name. Not surprisingly, she is from the boards of the same naval architecture and design firms, Reichel / Pugh and Nauta, both firms with impressive reputations for high-performance sailing yachts.
Exploring all the options for a luxurious performance cruiser also capable of podium finishes at superyacht regattas, the team made full design studies for the yacht in both carbon and aluminum using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimize hull shape and balance. Royal Huisman’s Featherlight™ method, an evolution of nearly 60 years of aluminum yacht-building experience melded with the latest carbon technology, provides her owners the best of both materials for a no-compromise yacht.
Project 405 Nilaya will be delivered to her owners, represented by Nigel Ingram from MCM Newport, in the coming months.
