Oceangoing Capabilities of the Used Nordhavn 75 EYF Yachts

At cruising speed, the Detroit Series 60 diesel engine on the Nordhavn 75 EYF for sale burns fuel at about 12 to 15 gallons per hour. This is a mere drop in the bucket compared to huge noisemakers that guzzle 100 to 200 gallons of diesel or more every hour. Fuel capacity on the Nordhavn 75 EYF is 17,185.8 Liters or 4,540 US gallons. When cruising at a forced slower running speed due to rough sea conditions, the Nordhavn 75 EYF is safer than other sportfishers, which typically have small rudders. Even in stormy waters, a comfortable ride can be enjoyed, thanks to the yacht’s standard stabilizers. A new Nordhavn standard feature permitted by the 22’ 4” beam is twin engines; a single screw isn’t an option.

A superb alternative for much more expensive, high-speed vessels, Nordhavn has created a luxurious yacht for avid trawlers that delivers quiet comfort, remarkable efficiency and the capability of traveling to premier fishing spots anywhere in the world.

Weight Advantages

There are even more weighty benefits to the N75 EYF , as compared to the usual sportfishing yachts. Although you are able to enjoy all of the luxury of well-appointed furnishings and equipment that go along with living the high life on Nordhavn’s yachtfisher , there is no weight penalty. The full displacement hull makes it feasible to have everything you may want on a fishing excursion that can go on for months, as opposed to hours. Load up the jet skis, dive equipment and more; and enjoy such weighty amenities as granite countertops, as well.

Semi-Custom

The buyer has their choice of Ultraleather or fabric of equal value for cushions throughout the yacht. The N75 EYF is a semi-custom boat so more aspects of interior design can be chosen to suit the buyer’s lifestyle and personal tastes. As can be depended upon with all yachts in the Nordhavn line, every detail throughout is high quality and hard-wearing.

Nordhavn Yachts for Sale

Originally a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California back in 1974, today, the shipyard is a luxury yacht builder specialising in oceangoing passage-makers.

The original brokerage company, Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE), was founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen and embraced the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. In 1976, PAE began importing another line of boats from Taiwan called the Transpac 49. Over an eight-year period, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 Transpacs.

When the time was right to develop their own models, PAE began with sailing yachts in the late 1970s, forming a relationship with new Taiwanese shipyard Ta Shing Yacht Building.

In 1988, as the sailing yacht market was declining, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Because its style and look was reminiscent of North Sea fishing trawlers, the name Nordhavn (Norwegian for North Harbor) was chosen for this new design. Nordhavn is the ongoing trading name of Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc.

The shipyard overall has a global team of around 90 employees and currently offers 17 designs from 39 to 120 foot (12 to 36.5m). Nordhavn is also known for its loyal customers and regular rendezvous for owners.

History of Nordhavn Yachts

The origins of Nordhavn date back to 1974, and a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California. The shipyard grew out of a brokerage company founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen. The business originally comprised of a general yacht brokerage and the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. The brokerage and import company was known as Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE) and, in 1976, PAE added another line of boats called the Transpac 49. These were also imported from Taiwan and, between 1976 and 1984, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 of these.

In 2018, Nordhavn announced it would be collaborating with the renowned Dutch design firm Vripack on the creation of fresh, modern interiors for its Nordhavn 80 model to serve the diverse styles and tastes of contemporary buyers.

In 2020 the shipyard announced it is building their largest yacht yet, this being a new 148-foot (45m) project. The Nordhavn 148 expedition superyacht, known as N148 will be able to take on the most extreme cruising itinerary, and is the latest collaboration between Nordhavn and Vripack.

Today, Nordhavn’s specialism is in oceangoing passage-makers that can cross any ocean in safety, luxury and comfort.

Nordhavn superyachts are designed to cross any ocean in safety, luxury and comfort.

The Nordhavn Collection

The expedition yacht builder has delivered more than 850 yachts to over 500 owners, most of whom are owner/operators of their vessels. These full displacement, trawler-style motor yachts are built of fiberglass composite to the shipyard’s highest standards.

In 1988, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Hull Number 1 of the Nordhavn 46 was completed and shipped in early 1989. In terms of other notable builds, Nordhavn’s production series includes many innovative models, such as a 56-foot Motorsailer and the 75 Exploration Yacht Fisher, as well as the European-styled Nordhavn 78.

On the superyacht side, Nordhavn’s flagship is a Nordhavn 120. The 120-foot AURORA (36.75m), was launched in 2014 and was the recipient of several awards recognizing her comfort, stability and range. The Nordhavn 120 AURORA was designed by Jeff Leishman with naval architecture by Nordhavn, and the interior design was created by Destry Darr Designs. AURORA can accommodate up to 10 people with a complement of seven crew.

Whilst the smallest model in the collection is N41 (12.6m), the newest project, the N148 (45m) will be groundbreaking for the shipyard. The first metal yacht in the history of the Nordhavn product line, this new design pushes the brand to go beyond prior engineering feats. Key to the design are Vripack’s reinterpretation of particular features, including a flared, rounded bow, the yard’s interesting combination of square and round windows, and an industrial chic aesthetic. The interior volume of the N148 will be approximately 25% larger than the fleet’s current queenship, the Nordhavn 120. This model has been hailed as the ultimate crossover yacht: a mix of commercial ship and elegant superyacht.

Nordhavn 75 – Boat Review

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: May 18, 2009

0509br_nordhavn368

So how do you fit everything there is to know about a 75-footer capable of cruising nonstop to fish the Azores or Ghana or even the bluefin bite in the Med into fewer than 1,200 words? With great difficulty. This grand lady represents Nordhavn’s first foray into the fishing-boat genre, and for the most part, the company got it right.

Performance Despite its impressive bulk, the Nordhavn 75 offers inch-by-inch control when maneuvering in tight quarters thanks to a pair of 38 hp hydraulic bow and stern thrusters. And whether under way, anchored or drifting, the twin 16-square-foot stabilizer fins keep roll moment to an absolute minimum.

Although you can certainly request a steering wheel on your boat, this particular owner prefers jog-lever steering on the flybridge, bridge wings and cockpit. This joystick setup provides amazingly fast rudder response.

Running along, even those who are used to faster, noisier sport-fishing boats would readily admit that the Nordhavn’s ride seemed extremely comfortable. This boat is quiet, fuel-efficient, soft riding and virtually indestructible. You’ll find a very different motion while under way in this vessel than in the high-speed planing hulls you’re used to. During our four-hour trip from Palm Beach to Stuart, Florida, seas ran four to six feet, and the Nordhavn barely acknowledged their presence.

At 10 knots, I witnessed considerable subsurface turbulence in the wake, but with well-delineated alleys. Dropping back to about 7 knots cleaned the wake up nicely for presenting your trolling spread.

You’d think that fighting fish on such a boat would be a slow-moving cluster. ? au contraire. Combine the bow and stern thrusters with thrust from the engines, and the Nordhavn 75 reacts quite nimbly. She backs down at a solid 7 knots in total control – which is as good as many much faster boats can muster. Overall, I admit to being favorably surprised at this boat’s fishability. Add to that the incredible livability, and this vessel becomes very hard to beat. With this boat you can actually head out to the Northeast Canyons, stay offshore and fish comfortably – for a week!

Flybridge The sheer overall height of this boat gives the flybridge a vantage point equal to the towers on many traditional sport-fishermen. From the helm, situated at the starboard aft rail of the bridge, you can easily see the aft two-thirds of the cockpit. One thing I’d be sure to change concerns the massive 48-foot Rupp four-spreader outriggers. Our boat had manual deployment. I can’t imagine not having hydraulic riggers on a boat of this size. Additionally, hydraulic outriggers allow you to lay the riggers down aft so you can cruise under bridges more readily.

Cockpit Obviously, this 75 boasts a huge cockpit – plenty big enough to handle even the largest offset fighting chair. You’ll find an access door to the swim platform in each corner, and you can combine the portside access door with the tuna door to create a larger opening. Then the warping winch (for docking stern-to in certain parts of the world) could easily serve to crank big fish into the cockpit as well.

The heavy fish-box hatches need some pneumatic lift assistance. The twin livewells in the forward cockpit modules could use gaskets and full-column intakes, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to plumb at least one of them for removable tuna tubes. Though I can’t imagine taking water over the transom into this cockpit; traveling across oceans certainly might fill it in rough seas, but no worries, the 75 has the most incredible scuppers I’ve ever seen. No water will ever pool on this deck.

Sure, I found things I’d change in the cockpit, but since this is a semicustom boat, you can design your cockpit and interior layout any way you choose. Nord-havn does an excellent job of providing adequate rod storage on its first hull, though. I counted 26 rod holders around the cockpit, with more hidden in the mid-deck overhead.

Interior The master craftsmen in Nordhavn’s Xiamen, China, yard creates joinery work that borders on perfection. Trying to find joints in your choice of teak or cherry interior would prove to be a difficult pastime. This first 75 boasts a unique layout. The master stateroom is the farthest forward, with guest staterooms on a lower deck and aft of the master. Another nice feature that lets you increase your guest list – pullout canvas pipe berths fit into receivers just above the regular bunks in the guest cabins, effectively doubling the number of available berths – provided they’re all occupied by good friends, of course.

One thing I made careful note of was the amazing lack of engine or running noise down in the guest and master staterooms while under way.

Pilothouse Consider the 75’s pilothouse as something akin to an enclosed flybridge. This one boasts an L-shaped settee to port with a table, as well as a separate cabin space featuring twin over/under berths. I’d personally turn it into an office or library with a comfy sofa to nap on. Others said they’d like to simply enlarge the entire pilothouse. With Nordhavn, anything’s possible.

Engine Room You haven’t seen a big engine room until you walk into this one. It’s huge! You get complete access to every piece of equipment that Nordhavn mounts in the compartment. And all the noise-making machinery lies as far aft as possible – just as it should. Anyone who really plans to travel around the globe will particularly appreciate the fuel-polishing system that centrifugally removes all impurities in your diesel.

Another interesting and unusual feature – for an offshore fishing boat anyway – can be found in the lazarette. Nordhavn provides tiller handles that attach to the tops of the rudder posts. In the unlikely case that you spring a leak in your steering hydraulics, it’s nice to know that you could always steer manually in an emergency.

Design and Construction The large foredeck accommodates a pair of 17-foot tenders, such as, say, a flats skiff and a rigid-hull inflatable. As an added bonus, Nordhavn built an integral 80-gallon gasoline tank into the pilothouse brow to help fuel them.

One thing you don’t think about as much when fishing the coast becomes far more important on an oceangoing vessel such as this: getting around on the outside. Walkways on the Nordhavn are fabulous, with wide access and superb handholds where needed for security and ease of movement in the harshest conditions.

The 75 boasts a solid fiberglass hull with a three-layer barrier coat of vinylester resin to prevent osmotic blistering. Besides the solid hull, all horizontal surfaces receive Baltek end-grain balsa and marine plywood coring, while Nordhavn chooses to core vertical surfaces with Klegecell composite. A network of 10 full-length longitudinal and transverse stringers adds unbelievable strength. Sure, the boat tips the scales at an impressive 235,000 pounds, but remember, weight has much less bearing on displacement hulls.

The globe-girdling trawler-yacht crowd considers Nordhavn to be the ne plus ultra of transoceanic passagemaking. So while your friends might contract with a delivery ship to transport their fishing boat to remote places, you can enjoy running your boat on its own bottom for much less money. And believe me – that’s half the adventure!

Nordhavn Yachts

Expedition yacht builder Nordhavn has delivered more than 850 yachts to over 500 owners, most of whom are owner/operators of their vessels. These full displacement, true oceangoing passagemakers are built of fibreglass composite to the shipyard’s highest standards.

History of Nordhavn Yachts

What in 1974 began as a small yacht brokerage and import company founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen headquartered in Dana Point, California, has evolved into the present-day Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE). In the beginning, PAE imported a yacht model from Taiwan called the Transpac 49 . Over an eight-year period, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 Transpacs. When the time was right to develop their own models, PAE began with sailing yachts in the late 1970s, forming a relationship with new Tawainese shipyard Ta Shing Yacht Building. In 1988, as the sailing yacht market was declining, PAE started with a 14m motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman , Jim’s brother. Because its style and look was reminiscent of North Sea fishing trawlers, the name Nordhavn (Norwegian for North Harbor) was chosen for this new design. Hull #1 of the Nordhavn 46 was completed and shipped in early 1989. Nordhavn currently offers 17 designs from 12 to 36.57 metres.

Notable Nordhavn Yachts

Luxury yacht builder Nordhavn’s production series includes such innovative models as a 56-foot Motorsailer and the 75 Exploration Yacht Fisher , as well as the European-styled Nordhavn 78 . On the superyacht side, PAE’s first Nordhavn 120, the 36.75m flagship motor yacht Aurora , was received with awards and acclaim in 2014.

About Nordhavn and Current Nordhavn Yacht Models Available for Sale

Nordhavn yachts for sale

In 1974, three friends, experienced seamen with thousands of offshore sailing miles, Jim Leishman, Dan Streech and Joe Meglen formed a small yacht brokerage in Dana Point, California. They started with general yacht brokerage and the importation of CT and Transpac boats from Taiwan. During the years of 1978 to 1985, they partnered with the naval architect Al Mason and Ta Shing Yacht Building in Taiwan to build their first line of sailboats, totaling to 132 sailboats produced and still in service today.

By 1988, Jeff Leishman (Jim Leishman’s younger brother) designed their first 46foot / 14meter power boat. This unique powerboat project was considered odd, funny and different and it was referred to as PAE’s “tugboat”, by the world’s yachting industry. Ta Shing Yacht Building even declined to build it. This led to their next partnership with Tsai Wan Sheu, owner of the newly formed South Coast Marine in Taipei, Taiwan, who took on their project.

In 1989, Hull #1 of the N46 was completed and because its style and look was reminiscent of North Sea fishing trawlers, the name Nordhavn (Norwegian for North Harbor) was chosen for this new design. In 1998, PAE selected Pacific Seacraft (PSC), a Southern California sailboat manufacturer, to build its newest design, the Nordhavn 40 and over the next four years, forty-four N40’s were built.

N40 sales continued to flourish, but in 2004, the N40 molds were shipped from California to the new South Coast Marine factory in Xiamen, China where production continued. In 2004 they completed two new designs, the N55 and the N64. Building on the proven concept and style of the N47, these two new designs were an instant hit.

Nordhavn yacht owners are known as intrepid explorers are very tightly bound by their adventures. From November 3, 2001 to June 30, 2002, a 40foot /12meter ‘stock’ Nordhavn made history as the smallest production powered vessel to circumnavigate the world. In 2004, a group of 15 Nordhavns crossed the Atlantic in the company-sponsored Nordhavn Atlantic Rally. This marked the first fleet-based Atlantic crossing by a group of motor vessels, and its success further boosted the company’s stature.

Many Nordhavn voyages were read about the world over as more thrilling, more extreme journeys were undertaken: Scott and Mary Flanders and their world-wide adventures outlined in their Voyage of Egret blog; the Great Siberian Sushi Run (GSSR) by Ken and Roberta Williams; Steve and Carol Argosy, and Braun and Tina Jones captivated a global audience who followed them across the Bering Strait; and Sprague Theobold, the Nordhavn 57 owner whose exploration of the Northwest Passage garnered him national and international news coverage including a television documentary. The owner of a Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer will attempt to become the first person ever to single-hand a Nordhavn across an ocean. Thierry Vestrade departed Newport, RI June 30, 2016, embarking on a solo mission to bring his boat Deo Juvante across the Atlantic to Europe.

Nordhavn now boasts the most circumnavigations of any other company and its customers continue to break cruising records all over the world.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

nordhavn yacht fisher

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

nordhavn yacht fisher

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

nordhavn yacht fisher

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

nordhavn yacht fisher

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

nordhavn yacht fisher

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Normally the boats sail between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. although there are also companies that offer night cruises with dinner included. I recommend that you take advantage of the afternoons for a boat tour, when the monuments and museums are closed. Going on a night cruise to see the Moscow city lights is also a very good option.
