Marine Electronics: 11-Model TV Antenna Test

The shakespeare 2030 and naval pr-411 are our top picks for all-around performance at the dock or at sea..

For boat owners who just can’t do without an onboard TV, there are two approaches for bringing in signals to a boat-direct satellite receivers or marine television antennas for receiving shore-based signals. Systems for receiving signals from geostationary satellites can cost thousands plus a monthly fee, while marine TV antennas range in cost from well under $100 to close to $600. In this report, we look at the latter category.

The 10 marine television antennas we tested are for the reception of shore-side VHF channels 2-13 and UHF channels 14-88.

Marine Antennas Antennas intended for the marine market may have some aluminum parts, but they are usually protected in a lightweight plastic shell. Inside the plastic housing are special VHF and UHF elements positioned to capture as much signal from any horizontal direction as possible, and feed it to the coaxial cable that leads to your TV set below.

The marine television antenna may incorporate a high-gain, broad-band amplifier to boost incoming signal strength for snow-free reception. The amplifier must be selective in exactly what frequencies it will pick up, and must exhibit sharp notches on frequencies it will need to reject.

This is the essential dilemma of marine TV reception: Whats strong enough to bring in signals from a distance also tends to be flooded with spurious signals dockside.

Nuts & Bolts There appears to be no standard omnidirectional TV antenna mount. Some require their own special bracket. Some mount on a 2″ pole. Others take the more common 1″ marine antenna thread to fit onto marine antenna mounts and extension poles. Mounting method may help you decide which model will work best aboard your boat.

We found big differences in the plastic housings that protect the inside antenna elements and the pre-amplifier. Many of the housings were sealed shut, and there was no way in to see what was on the inside, an indication of weatherproofness. If an antenna performed well, we didnt break in to see why. But if one didnt perform well, we pried open the plastic for a look at the circuitry.

All of the television antennas we tested with built-in pre-amplifiers feed 8 to 12 volts DC at about 30 milliamps into the coax with positive DC carried on the center conductor, and negative on the outside braid.

How We Tested Once we assembled the antennas, we noted the DC current consumption of models with pre-amplifiers.

When we tested all antennas at a congested marina, most received VHF and UHF signals well enough, except for severe ghosting. Ghosting is caused by reflected signals coming in out of phase and with a slight signal delay from their non-direct path. Omnidirectional antennas will work much better away from the docks.

Then we took the antennas 20 miles offshore to judge reception from three different clusters of VHF and UHF transmitting television stations. We then cruised an additional 30 miles out and again judged reception of shoreside TV stations, some as distant as 100 miles.

We used two 12-volt DC televisions in our tests. One set used conventional rotary switch channel tuning with no automatic frequency control. This insured we were spot-on for every VHF and UHF channel without AFC pulling the TV receiver one direction or another if we were on an adjacent channel.

Alphanetics Techtenna This $79, heavy-molded black box has a pair of adjustable rabbit ears and a side mount that attaches to a vertical stanchion. You adjust for best reception by maneuvering the telescopic rabbit ears. We were told that inside the black box was specialized circuitry to enhance the television signal. But we concluded there was no internal amplifier because no voltage was required to run the antenna system.

At the marina, reception was identical to a pair of everyday rabbit ears held in the same proximity. At sea, the 20-mile and 50-mile tests showed fair to poor performance. We constantly had to readjust the whips. We broke open the case to inspect the circuitry and found a simple 75-300-ohm impedance transformer-the same thing you can buy at Radio Shack for about a buck. Not surprisingly, the Techtenna has been taken off the market, though there may be some left

Bottom Line: Not recommended.

Omnidome This white little antenna looks identical to a GPS receiver/antenna housing and came to us via a marine electronics tinkerer who said he was going into business producing these TV reception systems. The inside workings consisted of just a small metal loop; it fared very poorly in our testing, and it, too, has been taken off the market.

Bottom Line: Although you may find it discounted somewhere, we don’t recommend it.

Boatenna This is a $75, 24″ hoop made of anodized aluminum. Included is a 75-300-ohm adaptor that converts the twin-lead to the antenna port on your TV.

At the dock, TV reception on all channels was very good except for lots of ghosts on the lower channels. At 20 miles out, the unamplified hoop held onto the lower channels fairly well. Signals on the higher channels plus UHF were strong. At 50 miles, reception was good, but with snow indicating it was near its outer limits.

If you just cruise locally, the Boatenna should provide adequate TV reception, plus the FM music band, for relatively small cost.

Bottom Line: Not a top choice.

Shakespeare 2020-G This is a lightweight, 14″, pre-amplified marine antenna that sells for $99. The built-in amp contains multiple filters to minimize commercial radio interference on VHF and UHF channels, and offers 20.2 dB gain.

The relatively large power supply can run off 110 volts AC or 12 volts DC. You will need to purchase a small F-connector jumper to go between the power supply and your TV set.

Dockside reception was good, but, again, with lots of ghosts. Out 20 miles, all ghosting disappeared, and reception on all channels was excellent. But as we got to about 45 miles out, reception on the lower channels began to degrade. At 50 miles, Channels 2 and 3 were viewable, but not always in color. The higher channels came in relatively well.

The 2020 has a neat feature that cuts the power supply if you accidentally reverse the leads or have a plug short. An LED indicates things are working fine.

Bottom Line: One of the least expensive amplified antennas on the market, the 2020 offers only average performance, in our opinion. Wed recommend spending a little more for a better performer, such as the Shakespeare 2030.

Sea Sharp SSA-102 This $99 antenna comes with anodized aluminum hardware for mounting on a pole at home, but can be adapted for marine installations. The antenna is semi-omnidirectional with telescopic whips at each corner. Dockside, we could turn the antenna for improved signal with less ghosting.

At 20 miles, the Sea Sharp was relatively omnidirectional to most UHF and higher VHF channels, but somewhat directional (using the whips) to the lower TV channels.

At 20 miles, reception was not bad. Fifty miles out, the Sea Sharp did okay as long as it could be aimed at the distant stations. Nonetheless, it was picking up all of the distant stations with good color, even on the lower channels.

We measured the amplifier gain at less than 19 dB, but this was enough to see improvement in the picture as soon as we clicked on the amplifier.

We worry about the telescopic whips holding up, and the unit itself seems open to the weather. It was okay at busting ghosts dockside, but then so is a cheap pair of rabbit ears.

Bottom Line: We’d pass on this antenna.

Dantronics UFO-111 At 10″, this is one of the smallest amplified marine antennas around. It sells for $127.

A red LED on the antenna indicates everything is okay. You must supply your own RG-59U 75-ohm cable. It comes with a little box that splits the two FM and TV F-connector terminals plus the terminal for the cable run up to the antenna. Make sure you don’t accidentally hook up the antenna cable directly to your TV.

At the dock, the UFO easily picked up all channels, and ghosting was minimal on the lower channels. At 20 miles, reception was superb on all UHF channels and most VHF channels, with Channels 2 and 3 beginning to pick up light snow. By the time we were 50 miles out, 2 and 3 were in and out of color, but still viewable. The higher VHF channels were also a little snowy, but quite viewable. UHF was very good.

We found that elevating the UFO an additional 10′ dramatically improved lower-channel reception, but thats true of all antennas.

Bottom Line: We recommend it for boats where space is tight.

Shakespeare 2030-G This is a relatively large, but thin, 21″, $128 antenna that comes with the built-in 20 dB pre-amp and an AC/DC switchable power supply.

In the marina, there was the usual ghosting-again, a clue the antenna should perform well at sea. At 20 miles, the Sea Watch marine TV antenna was absolutely omnidirectional with no noticeable fades. All channels, including 2 and 3, came in with full color and no sign of snow. At 50 miles, the lower channels showed signs of snow, but reception was still better than with any of the smaller antennas.

On the higher VHF channels, and all UHF channels, reception was excellent. Even with severe rolling and pitching, there were no signal fades. Bottom Line: We highly recommend the Shakespeare 2030. It will also work on FM, but its principally designed for television reception.

Dantronics Status This new entry from Dantronics ($273) looks a bit like a big ABS plastic mushroom. The Status is shipped with a plastic amplifier control box that allows the amp to be switched on and off, as well as to adjust the 20 dB gain down to 5 dB.

The control box has two outputs to two televisions, or a TV and an FM receiver. This complicates installation, but the Dantronics comes with an excellent manual.

In the harbor, we could decrease ghosting by dropping the gain. At 20 miles, reception was excellent on all VHF and UHF channels, with only Channels 2 and 3 beginning to suffer slightly. The Status has a pinnacle, a 5″ plastic spike containing a vertical polarization component that is designed to improve the picture when the boat is subjected to heavy rolls or pitching.

At 50 miles, reception was relatively good on Channels 2 and 3, but not quite as good as with larger diameter antennas. On VHF and UHF, reception was sparkling.

We liked the different mounting configurations possible.

We found the Status a good performer except when we were at the limits on Channels 2 and 3. But on the higher VHF channels, and all of the UHF channels, reception was good, while the adjustable gain improved dockside performance.

Bottom Line: We recommend the Status for owners who split their TV time between harbor and underway.

Naval Electronics PR-411 Naval Electronics Model PR-411, at $279, is a good example of a commercial-grade antenna. The upper shell is thicker than most other ABS plastic TV antennas, and it is tightly bonded to the ribbed bottom shell. All the inside metal elements plus low-noise amplifier are imbedded in solid polyurethane foam.

The amplifier gain was approximately 25 dB, one of the highest we recorded, which permits a smaller 17″ antenna. Naval incorporates two amplifiers, one for VHF and one for UHF to minimize cross-modulation problems. We were impressed with all of the technical documentation that accompanied the PR-411.

The Naval power supply also doubles as the distribution point for the signal to twin jacks, one for television and radio 1, or TV or radio 2.

The antenna mounts to any vertical pole. There are several optional brackets.

In the marina, the Naval PR-411 had plenty of local signal-and ghosts. Out 20 miles, TV reception on all channels was excellent. At 50 miles, the Naval PR-411 continued to give us outstanding signals, with only a faint trace of snow on the lower channels.

Out 50 miles, all but the Naval antenna experienced blank-out when we transmitted on marine VHF radio at 25 watts. On the Naval, we couldnt even tell we were transmitting.

This was also the only antenna that withstood the pounding of nearby transmitters in the downtown harbor. There was absolutely no sign of interference caused by strong paging transmitters located just 2 miles away.

Bottom Line: The Naval antenna is a top choice, albeit an expensive one.

Dantronics Mat 220 If your dockmaster wont let you put up a directional aluminum home-style TV antenna on a piling, you may wish to consider two motorized models that have internal directional elements.

Priced around $550, the Dantronics Mat 220 has both omnidirectional and directional capabilities under its 17-1/2″ dome. You can dial in the exact direction you want the antenna pointed, then adjust the gain for best reception. LEDs show you which way the antenna is rotating.

At sea, the omnidirectional capabilities were similar to the Shakespeare 2030 with good reception up to 50 miles on all channels, other than a little snow on Channels 2 and 3

Bottom Line: This is a rather expensive antenna system, but excellent for minimizing ghosts.

Shakespeare Sea Watch 2040 This $250, 21″ antenna has a hand-controller that is hard-wired for left and right rotation. A control box signals when you have reached maximum rotation limits. The 2040 worked fine in the harbor with minimal ghosting. Performance was almost identical to the Dantronics Mat 220. On-the-water reception was great out to 50 miles. If we changed course, we simply re-tuned the antenna.

Bottom Line: Best buy of the directionals.

Conclusions Size and amplification are the keys to performance with marine TV antennas. Any of the amplified small omnidirectional marine TV antennas will do a lot better than a simple pair of unamplified rabbit ears. But if you want across-the-channels performance, we recommend the Shakespeare 2030 or the Naval PR-411.

On boats with lots of vibration, one of Navals 10 models or a commercial Dantronics antenna are best.

The Dantronics Status, with adjustable amplitude, is also a good bet for those who do a lot of on-the-hook TV watching

If you plan to do most of your TV watching at the dock, and are willing to spend some bucks, the directional Shakespeare Sea Watch 2040 performs about at as well as the $570 Dantronics Mat 220, but at $250 is a much better buy.

For Your Viewing Pleasure: The Best Marine TV Antenna for Boats

For Your Viewing Pleasure: The Best Marine TV Antenna for Boats

Obviously, you don't need a TV on your boat. But you might want one.  Between GPS navigation systems , VHF radios and smartphones, you have plenty of access to safety and weather information.

Sometimes, though, you just want to (and should) get out of the sun for a while. Relaxing with your favorite show or movie is a good way to recharge for more fun in the sun. And that smartphone screen isn't really big enough for everybody to watch.

What if rain and other weather conditions are keeping everybody below deck ? If you have kids, you'll understand the benefits of having alternate entertainment on hand. Probably more than most.

A few benefits to having a TV onboard include:

  • Provide weather updates from local stations
  • Check local news
  • Entertain the kids or yourself in the evening or during bad weather
  • Check out the cooking shows for a killer seafood recipe

Whether you have a liveaboard trawler , a weekend getaway cuddy cabin, a pontoon boat or a sport fishing boat, having a TV onboard makes perfect sense.

That, however, comes with a few technicalities. Mainly, how do you get good reception (or any reception at all) out on the water?

Read on for some tips and examples to choose the best marine TV antenna for your boating lifestyle.

How Does a Marine TV Antenna Work?

Marine TV antennas pull signals from towers or satellites just like the one in your house. The only difference is that the boat is moving. Thus, the signal is never in the same place (okay, the signal is technically in the same place, but the boat isn't).

This leads to several issues to overcome when choosing the best antenna for a boat. You'll want to consider the distances and locations where you typically boat. This will help determine the strength and type that's best for your boating lifestyle.

Check Price on Amazon - Better Boat's dock lines are made of ultra-durable double-braided nylon. They're smooth, snag-resistant and won't scratch your boat. Dock line is professionally whipped with a 12-inch eyelet. Combine with boat fenders  and line for added protection at the dock or beside other boats.

Key Features of the Best Marine TV Antenna

Consider these key features when choosing a marine TV antenna.

Distance from Land

Take into consideration how far from land you'll be. If you spend most of your TV viewing time at the liveaboard marina , you probably won't need a super-strong antenna.

But if you're way offshore, you'll definitely need something that's strong enough to get reception.

Signal strength is an important factor to consider when looking for a marine TV antenna. Most antennas these days are digital. You'll want to consider the distance you'll be trying to tune in. If you rarely go more than a mile or two, you won't need as much signal strength.

Long-range Reception

If you'll be heading far offshore, you'll want a marine TV antenna with long-range reception. This means that it'll receive local signals from a long distance away.

Non-corrosive Construction

Water, wind, salt , sand and sun ... what more can I say? Marine-grade components are a given when it comes to boating and the great outdoors.

You want all of the  stainless steel and UV resistance you can get. One tip: if it's made for an RV, it's probably good for a boat.

Low-Noise Amplifier

A low-noise amplifier boosts signals with very low strength while preventing additional noise and static (a typical amplifier will increase the strength and the noise).

If you have two TVs, you'll want a low-noise amplifier so the signal strength isn't compromised.

Amplifier Signals

  • Amplified:  If an antenna is amplified, it means that the amplifier is built into the housing. It's a good choice when there aren't strong TV signals in the area as it can bring in signals from a greater distance. This type is a good choice for a marine situation.
  • Non-amplified:  Non-amplified antennas are commonly used inside. They're best when you're near towers with little to no interference. I don't recommend this type for boating purposes (unless, of course, you only watch TV at the marina and there's a tower nearby).
  • Directional:  A directional antenna lets you point it at the strongest signal. Now, on a boat, that's not necessarily a positive thing, as the boat is often moving. If you only watch TV at the marina, this might work out okay.
  • Omnidirectional:  With an omnidirectional antenna, no turning is required to pick up a good signal. It's an automatic kind of thing. I highly recommend this type for any boating application.

DISH Network or DIRECTV- Compatible Receiver

If you already have a satellite subscription to DISH Network or DIRECTV, you might want to find an antenna receiver that's compatible.

Often, you can simply add it to your current subscription to get all the fancy channels along with the local stations. You'll never miss a game ever again!

Shakespeare 3004 SeaWatch Marine TV Antenna

The low noise and compact dome shape of the Shakespeare 3004 Sea Watch give it high marks for me. With the low noise amplifier , weaker signals are amplified to get a better picture.

It's omnidirectional with 360-degree performance , receives all local HD signals and has lots of options for power (such as AC, DC or even USB).

The small and unobtrusive shape won't take up too much space on your boat. Best of all, there's no assembly required.

  • Power : AC, DC or USB
  • Dimensions : 10" x 9" x 5"

Winegard Company PA-1000 DISH Playmaker Satellite TV Antenna

If you already have DISH at home, this is the perfect choice. It's easy to set up and is compatible with your current DISH subscription .

It's powered by a single coax connection through DISH receiver. It automatically finds DISH HD satellite orbital locations to make it easy to watch your favorite shows on the hook.

It's compact and portable enough to be taken anywhere. When you're done on the boat, pack it up and take it to the tailgating party.

You can purchase a tripod mount or a window mount for even better reception.

  • Power : Single coax connection through DISH
  • Dimensions : 12" x 12" x 18"

It's true. Your main boating goal may be to just enjoy the boat, the water and the great outdoors. Mine is, anyway.

Once you've pulled up anchor  and chains put away all the snorkeling gear, floating water mats and other toys, it's always nice to be able to check weather conditions, catch up on the news or have a bit of entertainment after being out in the sun all day.

Hopefully, you've picked up a few ideas on the best marine TV antenna for your boat.

Happy boating!

Buyer's Guide: Marine TV Antenna

Are you a seaworthy adventurer who enjoys staying connected even when out at sea? If so, a marine TV antenna is an essential gadget to keep you entertained and informed during your nautical escapades. To help you make an informed decision, we have compiled a comprehensive buyer's guide to steer you in the right direction.

Key Considerations

Before setting sail into the vast ocean of marine TV antennas, it's important to keep a few key factors in mind. By considering these aspects, you can ensure that you make the best choice for your specific needs.

  • Type : Marine TV antennas come in various types, including omni-directional and directional. Omni-directional antennas receive signals from all directions, making them ideal for boats that are frequently changing direction. On the other hand, directional antennas receive signals from a specific direction, providing stronger reception but requiring manual adjustment as you change course.
  • Range : Check the range of the marine TV antenna to ensure it covers the distance you require. The range is particularly important if you plan to venture far from the coast or into remote areas.
  • Signal Strength : Consider the signal strength required for your desired channels. If you plan to anchor near urban areas, a medium signal strength will suffice. However, if you're heading offshore, a high signal strength antenna is essential for capturing distant signals.
  • Installation : Ease of installation is crucial, especially if you're not a seasoned sailor. Look for antennas that come with clear instructions and include all necessary mounting accessories.
  • Durability : Saltwater, strong winds, and unpredictable weather conditions are common challenges at sea. Ensure the marine TV antenna you choose is built to withstand these elements and is made from high-quality materials.
  • Power Supply : Determine whether you need a marine TV antenna that operates on its own power source, requires a power connection, or can utilize your boat's existing power system.
  • Size and Design : Consider the size and design of the antenna, ensuring it can be easily mounted on your boat without interfering with other equipment or storage space.

Features to Look For

Now that you have a clear idea of some important considerations, let's dive into the features that set marine TV antennas apart. When making your decision, keep an eye out for these key features:

  • Weather Resistance : Look for antennas with weatherproof or UV-resistant coatings to ensure they can withstand harsh marine conditions without deteriorating.
  • Low Noise Figure : A low noise figure indicates better performance in receiving weak signals, allowing you to enjoy uninterrupted entertainment on your seafaring journeys.
  • Signal Amplification : Some antennas come equipped with signal amplifiers to improve and boost signal reception, making them ideal for areas with weak signals or great distances from TV transmitters.
  • Integrated DVD Player : If you'd like to have the option of playing DVDs onboard, consider marine TV antennas that include an integrated DVD player for added convenience and entertainment options.
  • Support for Multiple TVs : If you have multiple TVs onboard, opt for an antenna that can support multiple connections, allowing everyone aboard to enjoy their favorite shows simultaneously.
  • Additional Connectivity : Look for antennas with additional connectivity options, such as HDMI or USB ports, enabling you to connect external devices like gaming consoles, streaming devices, or USB media.
  • Automatic Gain Control : This feature helps maintain a stable signal by automatically adjusting the gain based on the quality of the incoming signal, ensuring a smooth viewing experience while on the water.

What’s the best TV option for your boat?

best yacht tv antennas

Posted By: Stuart Sweet June 24, 2020

More people are taking to the open water than ever before. Boat sales, both new and used, are up this year. Marine accessories is one of the breakout sectors of 2020. It’s easy to see why, when people spent the spring locked up. Anyone who’s able is now aching to get some sunshine and some fun. And after a day of fun in the sun, it’s time to settle into the cabin and relax.

There are four really good options for marine television, and it all depends on your budget. It also depends a little bit on how far away from shore you’re willing to go.

Option 1 (least expensive): Antenna TV

best yacht tv antennas

Free broadcast television works great on boats. You can generally be about 50 miles offshore and get good reception. An antenna like this one , although it’s designed for RVs, works very well. It will let you get free broadcast TV no matter which direction your boat’s pointing. TV signals tend to travel quite well over water because there are no trees or buildings to block the signal.

SHOP NOW FOR THIS ANTENNA

The best part is that there’s a lot of content out there. In most major cities you’ll get about 80 different channels when you scan, and that should be enough to satisfy your TV needs at a very modest price point.

Option 2: gotW3

best yacht tv antennas

You might not have heard of this new product, but it’s going to rock your world. gotW3 is a “hotspot on steroids” that will let you use streaming devices, tablets, and computers on your boat. You can run an external antenna up a mast and get great internet from about five miles offshore. The gotW3 device is inexpensive and the monthly 300GB/month data plan is about the same as you’d pay for a cell phone. It’s a much better solution than trying to use your phone down in the cabin. It will give Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet to all the devices down there.

SHOP NOW FOR GOTW3

Option 3: Marine satellite television

best yacht tv antennas

Why leave anything at home? With a marine satellite dish you can get the same channels of DIRECTV or DISH programming you enjoy at home. You can even get DVRs on your pleasure craft. Marine satellite isn’t affected at all by the motion of your boat, which is really amazing. Complicated electronics make the marine experience just as good as the at-home experience.

A marine satellite system isn’t cheap, but it can let you get service from 50 miles offshore or even more. The right system can even let you add receivers from other countries so that you can watch TV wherever you are.

SHOP NOW FOR MARINE SATELLITE

Option 4: Satellite Internet (most expensive)

best yacht tv antennas

Satellite internet service is very similar to marine satellite TV. The technology is almost identical, but it’s designed to point at different satellites. With marine satellite internet, you get a high-speed internet connection that can reach hundreds of miles offshore. If you can stream it, you can get it with marine satellite internet.

It’s true, this isn’t a system for the faint of pocketbook. This is a premium product for a premium customer. If life has been good to you so far, contact our marine satellite specialist, David Ross. He’ll walk you through the process and build a custom quote that includes everything you need even installation!

Marine Satellite TV Equipment by KVH

TV at sea has never been easier. Introducing the TracVision product line by KVH, the most dependable and resilient marine television antennas on the market. The TracVision line includes marine antennas up to 1 meter wide, but the best consumer marine antennas are the significantly more compact TV1, TV3, and TV5. These three antennas are powerful enough to provide the marine television coverage you need, while being small enough to unobtrusively fit on your boat or yacht. For smaller near-shore boats the TV1 is perfect, and for further voyages on larger boats the TV3 or TV5 will be best.

The best TV antennas let you watch local news and sports without paying for a cable subscription, or they can supplement services like Sling TV with content from stations like FOX, CBS , NBC, ABC and more. If you're a cord-cutter or a cord-never, or you like watching football , antennas allow you to keep the entertainment flowing without hurting your bank account.

So how do we know which ones are the best? Our TV antenna reviews combine careful testing and hands-on evaluation to find the best TV antennas available, from basic indoor antennas to amplified models and larger outdoor antennas. We're continuously testing new models, too, to make sure there's nothing newer that's surpassed any of the older antennas on this list. We consider performance, the number of channels pulled in and whether those channels are watchable, plus the equipment that’s included and the ease of setup and use.

The quick list

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro HDTV Antenna review

1. Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

For the best overall TV antenna, it's hard to beat the capable Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro. The wide design goes big to pull in more stations. With a bigger and thicker design than most flat antennas, this chunky antenna boasts a built-in amplifier with an integrated signal-strength meter, helping you find the optimal spot for pulling in channels.

And pull in channels it does, leveraging it's wide surface area to nab more than 40 watchable stations, outperforming some of our favorite indoor antennas. The antenna has a unique detachable coax cable and includes a 3-foot USB power cable for powering the amplifier, but it comes rolled up in the box, and does need to spend some time unfurled before it will lay flat. But all of the quirks are worth it for the solid reception it offers, and the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is an excellent indoor antenna for suburban areas that may need a boost to get the most channels.

Best TV antenna: Winegard Elite 7550 Outdoor HDTV Antenna

2. Winegard Elite 7550 Outdoor HDTV Antenna

Sometimes an indoor antenna just won't cut it. When you need an outdoor antenna with excellent reception, the Winegard Elite 7550 is the smart option, and the best TV antenna for outdoor installation. It may cost a little more, but the Winegard Elite 7550 pays dividends, delivering a whopping 73 channels in our tests. Whether you're in a crowded city or a rural community, this outdoor HDTV should get the job done, pulling in more channels with better signal than any indoor model can offer.

If you're having difficulty getting local stations you want — or you just want better, more consistent reception — the Winegard Elite 7550's $120 price tag is worth every penny, pulling in dozens of free channels for less than a month's cable subscription.

Best TV antenna: 1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna

3. 1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna

For a simple indoor antenna that offers everything you need to cut the cord, the 1byone Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna offers a 50-mile range and included amplifier, all for a fairly reasonable price. With slick packaging and a basic black design, it's not only an Amazon best-seller, but it's also one of the best TV antennas we've reviewed.

Measuring just 13.3 x 9.3 inches, the antenna includes everything you need to connect to the TV, with a 10-foot coaxial cable and included adhesive patches for mounting. The simple design and included amplifier delivered dozens of watchable channels and can plug into any wall outlet or USB port. There's a good reason the 1byone is a top Amazon seller: It performs well and doesn't cost a lot.

Antop AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel Antenna

4. Antop AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel Antenna

Made for use inside and out, the Antop AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel offers some of the best performance we've seen, easily topping many of the indoor/outdoor models we've reviewed. And with an adjustable amplifier, included mounting hardware and optional FM connection for radio, it's a versatile best HD antenna option for anyone who's serious about cord-cutting.

The Antop AT-800SBS also has a table-top stand for indoor use, but this 85-mile antenna was at its best out in the elements, where it pulled in 68 watchable stations. A 40-foot cable is included for easy installation, and the adjustable amplifier lets you dial in the right amount of power boost to help you grab the stations you want. It's the best indoor/outdoor antenna we've tested, and well worth the premium price.

The budget indoor/outdoor antenna

ClearStream Max-V HDTV Antenna

5. ClearStream MAX-V HDTV Antenna

While its aesthetics may leave something to be desired, the ClearStream MAX-V is a very capable antenna that delivers more stations than even competing amplified antennas, even models costing much more. If you want to improve over-the-air TV reception, it's one of the best TV antennas we've reviewed.

Rated to capture stations as far away as 60 miles, the ClearStream MAX-V from Antennas Direct will work indoors or out and is competitively priced. Not only did it do better than many of our favorite indoor antennas, it also matched some of the best outdoor antennas, making it a great choice for mounting on a roof, hanging in an attic or just tucking it out of sight – which may be difficult given the bulky figure-8 design.

Read our full ClearStream MAX-V HDTV Antenna review .

The biggest indoor antenna

Back view of Mohu Gateway Plus HDTV Indoor Antenna

6. Mohu Gateway Plus

Like our favorite indoor antenna, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro, the Gateway Plus can pull in dozens of channels with its 60-mile range and shows you how strong of a signal it’s receiving with its four front LEDs.

Speaking of reception, the Gateway Plus is designed to be multi-directional, meaning it can be placed forwards or backwards and should be able to still receive a signal. That said, the front of the antenna has the LED signal indicator lights, so you’ll probably want those facing inside so you can see them.

For us, the Mohu Gateway Plus was incredibly solid. It picked up 41 channels with an astounding 34 of them playing flawlessly. Yes, there was still the occasional stutter — especially in the morning when there was inclement weather — but on a sunny day the Mohu Gateway Plus managed to surpass our top TV antenna, the Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro.

How to choose the best antenna for you

How to choose the best tv antenna for you.

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

If you're shopping for a TV antenna, you're in luck, because there's no better option for getting live TV for the lowest price possible: Free! But before you pick up the first TV antenna you see at the store, you want to make sure that you're getting one that will work for you.

Location and range: If you're in or near a city, there's a good chance you can make do with a small indoor antenna, since you'll have several stations within a 10 or 20 mile radius that can be pulled in without a big aerial or powered amplifier. If you're more than 30 miles from your local broadcast tower, you'll want to step up to an amplified model. Any antenna that's rated for 50 miles or more will either be a large outdoor unit, or come with an amplifier to boost the signal it gets, if not both.

Indoor or outdoor: Whether or not to get an outdoor antenna will largely depend upon the building you're in and the surrounding environment, since obstacles like house walls and even trees can prevent signal from getting through to an indoor antenna. Outdoor antennas are larger, and work better when positioned as high up as you can get it – a rooftop mast being the ideal installation.

Non-amplified or amplified: An amplified antenna uses an additional signal strength booster that can help weak signals come in clearly with a little extra juice. But that also means having another device to plug in, and another power outlet to give up. It also means a slightly higher price.

Non-amplified indoor antennas generally sell for between $20 to $40, but there are plenty of cheap TV antennas that sell for less than $20 that offer acceptable performance. An amplified antenna offers better performance, and will cost between $30 and $100. For the best performance, consider an outdoor antenna, which costs $100 or more.

Getting an antenna is the first step toward cutting the cord or pulling in free local channels. You don't need to spend a lot of money – the best cheap TV antennas do a great job, and even a $12 set of bunny ears might do the trick – and you don't even need a TV. (Check out I just discovered a new way to cut the cord — and there’s no subscription fee to learn about USB tuners that don't need a TV.)

But simply having an antenna won't automatically solve all of your over-the-air TV woes. Better antennas and optional amplifiers will go a long way toward bringing in more channels, but that's only part of the equation.

We recommend researching beforehand to determine what range of antenna you need, and whether you want an indoor model or an antenna made for outdoor installation. The best place to start is AntennaWeb.org , which lets you enter your address or ZIP code and see what stations are broadcasting in your area, as well as how far away the broadcast towers are.

Worried about future proofing for ATSC 3.0 as it rolls out to new cities? The good news is that your existing antenna will work, and may even pull in more channels under the new standard. The bad news is that you'll need to buy a new tuner or an ATSC 3.0-equipped TV, and these are only now coming to market.

Using a TV antenna with smart TVs and streaming devices

While streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max may be taking a more prominent place in the living room, there's still room for over-the-air (OTA) broadcast TV. Whether you want free access to local news or just want to get more sports without shelling out for another subscription service, an HDTV antenna can still provide plenty of great stuff to watch, and having a smart TV or one of the best streaming devices doesn't prevent using an antenna.

All of the best smart TVs for streaming also have built-in tuners for pulling in broadcast channels, and getting your TV channels programmed is an automatic process, with the TV scanning for stations and putting together a browsable channel guide in just a few minutes.

And several streaming devices are built with OTA content in mind. The Amazon Fire TV Cube , for example, can switch over to your TV's built-in tuner seamlessly, without having to swap TV inputs or juggle extra remote controls. You can even get something like the Amazon Fire TV Recast , a DVR that lets you record OTA content, and enjoy it all using the same Fire TV interface your TV might already be using.

How we test the best TV antennas

All of the TV antennas we review are tested in the same location. Each antenna is connected to the same TV, so the TV tuner remains consistent, and each one is placed in the same position to generate comparable results.

We're located just a few miles outside of a major metropolitan area, a location that provides an excellent testing location for antenna reception of any range, with more sensitive, long-range antennas pulling in a higher number of channels. It also gives us a chance to determine the quality of that reception, by seeing whether or not those channels are clear and watchable. The best antennas will pull in more channels, with a higher number of watchable results.

Your experience may differ from our test results. Depending upon how many stations broadcast in you area, and unique geographical impediments to over the air signal – such as buildings, trees and mountains – your own channel selection will vary considerably.

Best VHF antenna: 7 top options to improve your signal

  • November 30, 2022

Often taken for granted, a yacht's VHF radio is extremely important as both a transmitter and receiver. Even in our globally-connected world, VHF is often our only means of connection whilst at sea, and units are only as good as their VHF antenna...

best-vhf-antenna

Aside from the safety aspect, navigation alerts and weather updates, the non-essential uses of VHF radios are broad – from communication to and from the Race Committee for start procedure and courses, to having a chat mid-ocean with other open-sea rovers. They can also be used to book restaurants and order delivery pizzas in many a safe anchorage.

The importance of clear and robust VHF signal is crucial. You don’t want the anchovy topping on your Neapolitan when you specifically didn’t order it, or vigorous mocking for sailing round the wrong mark due to poor VHF reception.

To get the best performance out of your VHF antenna it is not so much about boosting your signal, as to try as much as possible to reduce the signal losses in your system, which are always inevitable.

The main focus of this guide is at the opposite end to the radio – the VHF antenna – very much the key part of the system, and there are several choices on the market. Unobstructed elevation is key to the mounting of the antenna. Ideally this should ensure a clear line of sight – so the mast head is the favoured location.

Our guide to the best VHF antenna options is broken down into 3 sub-categories:

Jump to masthead antennae Jump to whip antennae Jump to fiberglass antennae

Shakespeare S/S Whip VHF With Hawk Windex

Multi-use money saver

This combined Antenna and windex cleans up the top of any mast.

Particularly good on mastheads with a little more space, to fit this unit there must be enough room to avoid any conflict between the wind gear wand and the stainless steel whip antenna.

Boats with a mast crane would benefit from reducing the clutter at the masthead, as would those with forward-facing wind gear.

The Shakespeare brand (sold as V-Tronix in Europe) is one of the leaders in the VHF antenna field, so it’s easy to find after-sales support.

Combining the windex and VHF antenna to reduce the clutter really does makes a lot of sense!

Reasons to buy – Combines two of essential bits of masthead kit – Spares kits for the windex part are readily available

Reasons to avoid – Not available to all – there may be a conflict between the S/S Whip and the masthead unit

Gain – 3 dB Max Power – 50 Watts Weight – 250g Length – 0.9m

V-Tronix Heliflex Stub Antenna

The grand prix choice

The beauty of the V-tronix heliflex stub is the low profile size and its robust rubber construction.

A favourite in the racing world to reduce windage, and fitted on the majority of raceboats to date, it can be easily mounted on the craneless grand prix-style rigs.

Its squat size means it’s shorter than the wind gear and the windex – space really is at a premium at the top of a race rig and simplicity is the key.

The heliflex part of the name is a reference to the VHF antenna coil all under the rubberised skin – this spiral set up gives the antenna the length and reception required for great reception

Reasons to buy – The favourite of Grand Prix racers – Small and compact to save space and reduce windage – Made in a robust and weatherproof rubber casing – its tough!

Reasons to avoid – Because of its diminutive size its important to give it as clear a mounting as possible

Gain – 3dB Max power – 50 watts Weight – 50g Length – 0.15m

But what if you can’t mount a VHF antenna on the masthead?

Not sure where to mount the VHF antenna due to difficulties and obstructions like bulkheads and access to the mast itself? Well, all is not lost.

For the most efficient signal, the main direction of the focus of the antenna is horizontally – there certainly isn’t quite as much need for cover directly up or down for that matter –  but the heel and the motion of the yacht are considered in the design, and manufacturers do allow for this. So finding a spot which limits obstructions is the goal.

Somewhere else on the mast, elevated or aftward, are the next best spots – so long as it’s clear of running backstays and anything else that may damage it or obstruct its view.

An interesting (first world) problem some sailing superyachts have encountered is that they have a VHF black spot just a few metres around the yacht itself, created by the mast. So the solution has been to add a couple more antenna lower down and on either side of the mast to allow complete unobstructed coverage.

Let’s have a look at some versatile whip antenna for mast or deck mounting.

Whip antennae

The versatile options – on mast or deck

Metz Mantra 6 VHF Whip Antenna

Cruisers’ favourite

This little antenna is widely considered the best whip antenna on the market. It’s been around for 40 years and is favoured by the US Coastguard and many a seasoned cruiser.

With the coil guaranteed for life and the stainless whip replaceable, this little unit up for the challenge of long-term cruising .

Happy on the mast or transom, this is one tough antenna – but some do warn of making sure the cable-end connection is properly protected from the elements.

Reasons to buy – Widely regarded as the king of the cruisers – Guarantees and spares available

Reasons to avoid – Harder to find in Europe, but not impossible – Slightly more expensive than very similar offerings from the bigger rivals

Gain – 3dB Max power – 250 watts Weight – 230g Length – 0.87m

Shakespeare Squatty 5215 Whip Antenna (5214 in the US)

King of the Whip title challenger

These antennae are suited equally well on the masthead or the pushpit. This style is definitely a favourite of many seasoned ocean cruisers.

This is Shakespeare’s version, closely resembling the famous Metz Mantra but at a fraction of the cost. The whip-style antenna is small and light but very capable of great coverage, standing at 1m high.

The stainless-steel whip also has a fair bit of flexibility, which means it can take some accidental bending without damage, so when hauling in that prize tuna mid-ocean, you don’t have to worry so much about any breakages in the heat of the fight (in the VHF antenna department at least!)

Reasons to buy – A great little whip antenna from a high-quality brand – Widely available – Nice price point

Reasons to avoid – Up against stiff opposition for the title – Bit of a compromise compared to antennae made specifically for masthead or deck

Gain – 3dB Max power – 50 watts Weight – 650g Length – 1m

Supergain Glomex Task Whip Antenna

A smaller alternative

This tiny 530mm whip antenna was designed with RIBs in mind – but it also packs the same punch as you get in a VHF antenna twice its size.

Because of its RIB heritage it certainly is built to survive the bounciest conditions – perfect for those who either choose to or always find themselves with long upwind battles.

This would benefit from being mounted as high as possible but it seems to be pretty impressive even sat on the push pit. Quick to take on and off, it is well worth a look at, especially for smaller boats

Reasons to buy – Small and mighty – used to a proper work out – Easy to find a suitable elevated spot, due to its compact size

Reasons to avoid – Mount with care – it’s as easy to place it in a position of poor reception

Gain – 3dB Max power – 50 watts Weight – 125g Length – 0.53m

Fibreglass antennae

These fibreglass sturdy antennae will get you the best reception if deck mounting is your only option.

best yacht tv antennas

Lowrance (Simrad) 1710 VHF Antenna Ultraglass Q

This fiberglass antenna comes under many different company names – Lowrance, Simrad and B&G, all big players in the marine electronics world.

It comes with two fibreglass antenna parts which gives you two different possible configurations of antenna length.

Normal useable length is 1m, which is ideal for using in port or anchorage, but this can be extended to a whopping 2.4m when needed.

The connection is quick fit, so is part of the mount, which makes it really easy to remove the VHF antenna when you are not using the boat for extended periods without having to worry able cable runs.

Reasons to buy – Extremely adaptable with two different length options – Easily removable

Reasons to avoid – More care needed on connections from the environment when not connected

Gain – 6dB (max) Max Power – 100 watts ( max) Weight – 400g Length – 2.4m

Shakespeare Galaxy 5225 XT (white) 5226XT (black)

The go-to fibreglass deck mounted antenna for a decent signal, and globally available.

It is extra tough, hence the XT label, and comes in a choice of white or black with a UV protective polyurethane finish to keep it looking smart.

At 2.4m this antenna is probably as long as you would wish on a sailboat, but does get you the sort of boosted signal you need when not using the mast to get great coverage.

As mentioned previously, Shakespeare is a brand at the top of the game, so reliability is good and there is plenty of support, including a five-year warranty.

Reasons to buy – A very popular antenna from a leading brand. – Super stiff and tough which will last a long time – Great coverage from deck level

Reasons to avoid – Big. About as big as you can would want to get away with, so quite obtrusive

Gain –6dB Max Power – 100 watts Weight – 1800g Length – 2.4m

TV Antenna Review: Top Picks for Getting Free Over-the-Air Channels

The right digital antenna will get you free TV stations and make it easier to cut the cord with cable

TV antenna

TV antennas might seem like a relic of a bygone era, when the number of channels you received could be counted on one hand. But as consumers try to trim their ever-escalating cable and satellite TV bills, digital TV antennas are making a comeback. In fact, about one-quarter of all broadband households now use an antenna, according to research firm Parks Associates.

Consumer Reports tests indoor TV antennas of all shapes and sizes in urban and suburban homes. We found that most locations were able to receive dozens of free over-the-air channels. (Outdoor antennas tend to perform even better, but they’re not practical for everyone.)

That’s good news for the growing number of people who are dumping traditional cable packages but keeping streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Netflix. An antenna can supply their live TV, including local news and other broadcasts—here’s our deep dive on the benefits of a TV antenna .

Become a member of Consumer Reports to get access to our TV Screen Optimizer, which will help you get the perfect picture on your TV in just minutes. Join today to get started.

Even if you subscribe to a cable replacement service that brings you channels such as AMC and HGTV, you might still want an antenna. These services—which include DirecTV Stream, FuboTV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, and YouTube TV—don’t always provide local programming in all markets. An indoor TV antenna can help fill that gap.

If you live near a major TV market, you’ll probably get many local stations—ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, plus PBS and Telemundo—using a TV antenna. But there are now dozens of digital subchannels under the primary channels, too. These offer additional programming, such as old TV shows, B movies, and niche content. Websites such as AntennaWeb and the Federal Communications Commission’s DTV Reception Maps page can give you an idea of which stations you might expect to receive in your area.

As a bonus, the picture quality you get from your indoor TV antenna might be better than what you get from cable. “The signals may be less compressed,” says Claudio Ciacci, lead television tester at Consumer Reports.

In addition to a TV antenna, all you need to watch your local stations is a TV equipped with a digital TV tuner, something included in almost all TVs since 2007.

Before you buy a new TV, check our buying guide and full TV ratings of models from all the major brands. You’ll also find our exclusive brand reliability information based on feedback from more than 118,000 readers. Every set we evaluate goes through a battery of tests, backed by expert viewing panels, to determine high-definition picture quality and UHD performance with 4K content.

Tips for TV Antenna Shoppers

The antennas we tested ranged in price from $10 to more than $100—and we found little correlation between price and performance. The antenna that pulled in the most stations for most of our testers cost $35, and several pricier models were in the lower half of our rankings.

We included some amplified TV antennas in our review. These models can boost signal strength to help pull in stations that might otherwise be on the fringe. But our tests showed that amplified antennas weren’t always more effective than nonamplified models—they can also amplify noise and distortion, and overload reception from closer stations.

The number of channels you receive will depend on your location and environment, as well as the placement of the antenna in your home. You may need to try several models before finding the best antenna for your needs. That’s why we strongly recommend purchasing from a retailer with a no-hassle return policy. Also, it’s a good idea to regularly rescan for channels because you might have missed some the last time you scanned. And use our tips on where to place your antenna to get the best reception.

How CR Tests TV Antennas

Consumer Reports had 10 testers evaluate each of the indoor TV antennas at their homes, which were scattered around the New York tristate area. Most locations were within a 40-mile radius of the Empire State Building in Manhattan, but one was 64 miles away.

Every tester used the antennas on clear days in two spots: on or facing a window, and inside a room near the TV. Signal strength generally is stronger near a window , and that’s the result we used when calculating our rankings. We also tested performance when the antenna was placed near the TV, because people don’t always have an easily accessible window.

The antennas we tested pulled in both VHF (channels 2 to 13) and UHF (14 to 51) signals. In addition, we included some amplified TV antennas in our review. For these models, we turned on the amplifier, and if there were variable settings, we used the maximum setting.

We ranked the antennas based on the number of primary RF (radio frequency) broadcast stations received across our 10 test locations. To earn a mark for reception, a station had to have a stable, viewable TV picture. In our four-year history of testing these antennas, we detected a total of 34 UHF and 11 VHF stations across all our test sites, but each location received just a subset of these stations. (In the most recent test update, our testers collectively received 10 UHF and four VHF TV stations.)

Regardless of which antenna was being used, one of our test locations wasn’t able to pull in any stations, another was able to pull in a maximum of three, and yet another was able to pull in 15 stations.

But that RF channel count understates the amount of content an antenna can give you. The tester who picked up 20 stations was able to tune to 73 subchannels.

“Unlike the old days, when tuning to a station yielded only one channel, many stations now offer multiple subchannels that provide a greater variety of programming,” Ciacci says. Such subchannels often include a mix of vintage TV shows, nature programs, weather, and foreign-language programming.

What CR’s Antenna Tests Found

Our test results should be useful for pointing you in the right direction to models you might consider, but there are a number of variables that can affect antenna performance in your home.

We tested antennas near a window and away from a window, near the TV. In the tests near a window, the three indoor TV antennas that stood out for performance were the Winegard FlatWave FL5500A, the Winegard FlatWave Amped Pro TH-3000, and the ClearStream Eclipse Amplified TV Antenna.

But there were a number of other models that also did well. And a few were significantly cheaper, at $20 or less, including the 1byone (Updated 2020) Ultra-Thin Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna and the Mohu Leaf Metro.

In the rankings below, you’ll see two figures:

The “percentage of stations received” is a weighted average of the total number of stations that a particular antenna received at each location, divided by the number of stations we found to be available at that location through all our testing.

The “percentage of VHF/UHF stations received” breaks out the two broad categories of signals that were found at each location by any given tester, across all antennas. Any time a new UHF or VHF channel was found during a given scan, it was added to the total number available for that tester.

(Back in the early analog TV signal days, most major broadcast channels were in the lower-frequency VHF band—channels 2 through 13. Now they’re scattered across both bands, so it’s important to buy an antenna that does well across the board.)

6 Best TV Antennas of 2024

A TV antenna can get you free TV, and what's not to like about that? Ditch the cable bill and focus on the TV channels you actually watch. If you can get those from your local TV station, why are you paying above odds for them from someone else?

With a good antenna, you can pick up tens or even hundreds of channels, completely free of charge. Some of them even support 4K and 8K resolution, so you’re ready to enjoy the next generation of TV without paying any monthly charges. The Antop HD Smart Boost earns our best overall placement but read on to learn which of these TV antennas is the right fit for you.

Antop HD Smart Booster  »

best yacht tv antennas

Works well indoors and outdoors

Expansive 85-mile range

Built-in 4G LTE filter

Works multi-directionally

Supports VHF frequencies

Works with two devices simultaneously

Overkill for small, indoor TV setups

The Atop HD Smart Booster antenna is the most versatile on this list, and thus it takes our top spot. It works indoors and outdoors, it has a long range, and it features a built-in filter to prevent 4G LTE interference. It also supports VHF frequencies, so you can get a wide range of channels even if you’re quite far from the nearest broadcast station. It works multi-directionally, too, so you needn’t worry too much about placement or orientation.

You can mount this antenna in your living room, in your attic, or on the outside of your house. It also works with two devices at the same time, so you can plug it into multiple TVs to allow more than one group of people to enjoy HD and 4K channels for free.

1byone Amplified Antenna  »

best yacht tv antennas

Very affordably priced

The thin design makes it easy to hide away

Supports VHF and UHF ranges

Supports a long 200-mile range

Supports HD resolution channels

No protection from LTE signal

Placement can make a big difference in reception

The 1byone Amplified Antenna is a great budget antenna at its standard retail price, plus it's often heavily discounted. Despite costing around $40, the 1byone Antenna supports up to 100 channels at up to 200 miles range, though most buyers suggest that it works best at under 30 miles. Mounting the antenna properly is important, too, as placement can have a big impact on the number of channels you receive and how strong the signal is.

Fortunately, with an approximately 17-foot coaxial cable and multiple mounting options, you can place it exactly where it needs to be to make the most of it. It supports VHF and UHF frequency ranges, so you get full support for higher-resolution content and cleaner signals.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro  »

best yacht tv antennas

Just 0.4-inches thin

Multidirectional design makes mounting simple

Supports 1080p, 4K, and even 8K resolution

Supports UHF and VHF frequency ranges

Integrated signal indicator

Large footprint

The range is limited compared to some antenna

The Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is the premier paper-thin antenna at the top of Mohu’s range. It offers excellent multidirectional coverage with support for UHF and VHF frequency ranges. It's also incredibly thin, making it easy to stick to a wall or window and not get in the way. It's quite broad, however, so be sure it doesn’t take up too much wall or window space.

This antenna has a 65-mile range, which is perfectly adequate for most but may not be enough if you live a long way from a tower. However, you’ll get an excellent signal from a variety of channels, including support for 4K and 8K resolutions, which very few other antennas offer (most top out at 4K).

Antop AT-500SBS  »

best yacht tv antennas

An amplified signal with a large receiver provides great reception

Works in vertical and horizontal orientations

Built-in LTE filter protects against 3G and 4G

Supports a manual power booster to control gain

Lets you connect to multiple devices at the same time

Long cable for connecting to any device

Integrated FM antenna

Very large, taking up a lot of space

The Antop AT-500SBS is a powerful indoor antenna that will all but guarantee you’ll get great reception within an 80-mile radius. It is quite large, which presents some challenges for installation, but you can mount it vertically or horizontally. It also has a 15-foot cable for connecting to a central hub (and a 5-foot extension beyond that), so you’ll have no trouble reaching your TV or or other device.

Indeed, you can connect multiple devices to this multidirectional aerial. If needed, there’s a manual gain tuner you can adjust to boost the reception a bit. This can be particularly useful when you want to watch a channel that’s hard to capture, as you can always turn it down again when you’re watching something else.

Ultravizion TV Antenna  »

best yacht tv antennas

Transparent design makes it easy to hide

The compact size makes mounting simple

Can be easily mounted to a wall or window

Supports 4K resolution content

Includes amplifier for boosting the signal

No built-in LTE protection

Not as strong reception as more expansive antennas

For a TV antenna that gets the job done while being as unobtrusive as possible, choose the Ultravizion TV Antenna. It’s almost entirely transparent, letting you mount it on a window with minimal visual disruption. It works well on tables, walls, or even mounted behind the TV – although mounting placement can affect the signal strength.

It’s very compact, so wherever you choose to put it, it won’t take up much room. It supports both 1080p and 4K resolution content, so you can enjoy crystal clear UHD sports and TV without paying a thing. There’s no LTE connection, so this older design might be susceptible to modern phone cellular interruption in busy areas, but its built-in amplifier gives it a pretty strong reception to counter most problems. It’s also affordably priced, making this a great all-round antenna.

Durable construction and weatherproofing

Supports 1080p, 4K, and 8K resolutions

Works in attics or on roofs

Free app helps you boost your signal to find channels you want

The pre-assembled design pops open for installation

Very large and heavy

Outdoor mounting is more complicated

If you want to place your antenna on the outside of your house, you need a model that’s impervious to the elements. That’s what the RCA Yagi excels at. With its robust design and weatherproofing, it is ready to face whatever mother nature can throw at it, all while letting you watch 4K and 8K TV entirely for free.

It comes with an app to help you boost the signal. Although the design is a little more complicated to install than window-mounted interior antennas, this one comes pre-assembled to smooth out the process. If you don’t want to put it outside, it works just as well in attics. With its 70-mile range and multidirectional design, it can pick up just about anything you want to watch.

The Bottom Line

When you’re buying a TV antenna, you’ll want to consider range, directional placement, mounting options, and the ability to reject cellular and other airborne signals. Where you put it makes a huge difference as well. That’s why we love the Antop HD Smart Boost antenna. It offers good range, resolution support, and channel support, but it’s the mounting that’s so useful. It can be placed inside, outside, or in your attic, and it works well no matter how you orient it.

Things To Consider When Buying TV Antennas

Indoor versus outdoor : Oftentimes the best way to improve your antenna signal is to place it outdoors. Not all antennas are designed for this, however, so you’ll need to buy one with the right weatherproofing and make sure that you can mount it somewhere effective. If you’re in an apartment, there may be limited locations or permissions for you to do so. Indoor antennas can be just as effective in some cases, and you can always go halfway and mount it in your attic. That gives you the height, even if it isn’t quite as clear of obstructions.

Range and reception capabilities : All the antenna manufacturers quote grandiose claims about their antennas, but these are often best-case scenarios. An antenna might be able to pull in frequencies from hundreds of miles away, but those signals will often be very noisy, especially in crowded areas. Find how far your nearest tower is so that you can choose an antenna with enough range.

Amplified versus non-amplified : Amplified antennas can increase the gain of a signal to improve reception. However, this can introduce noise to the signal, so if you find that the channels you want to watch don't look good with the amplifier turned on, try turning it off, as it’s not always required for certain channels at certain distances.

Installation requirements and ease of setup : If you plan on mounting your antenna on the outside of your house, do you have the expertise and equipment to do so? You may need a certain type of drill and mounting hardware, as well as a large enough ladder and safety equipment. Alternatively, budget for hiring someone to mount it for you.

Interior antennas are easier to install. That said, some antennas are designed to work right out of the box, and others can take some configuration. Make sure you buy an antenna that works for your level of technical expertise.

Directional or multidirectional reception : If your antenna is multidirectional, it doesn’t matter too much what direction you aim at; it’s designed to simply pick up the signal from around it in any direction. If your antenna is directional, then you will need to carefully consider placement and which way it faces. While the simplest way to manage that is to point it directly at the nearest broadcast tower, that’s not always the best solution.

“A little-known fact is that sometimes we are collecting reflected signal -- so if the broadcast tower is 15 miles due North, you may be thinking you'd want to arrange your antenna with the best line of site to the north,” says tech editor at large, Caleb Denison. “But sometimes, you may actually get a better signal that's reflected off a big building off to the east, meaning the signal you want to grab is due east, and that's how you want to optimize your antenna placement. Unfortunately, these signals are invisible, which is why some experimentation in the home is often necessary to get the best results.”

How We Chose The Best TV Antennas

Our contributor, Jon Martindale, spoke with a number of professionals with deep knowledge of TV and antennas for this review. They included Techsponential founder , Avi Greengart and A/V editor at large, Caleb Denison , among others. Jon considered their expert opinions alongside many reviews from users on each recommended product, and compared spec sheets and features to find the absolute best antennas money can buy. For each antenna, he looked at their effective range, channels supported, mounting options, their weatherproofing, and resolution support, among other factors.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST US

Jon Martindale is a technology journalist with 20 years of industry experience. He’s written for Digital Trends, Forbes, PCGamer, and many other publications. He’s interviewed many analysts and experts over the years and prides himself on being able to distill complex topics into easily digestible recommendations. To Jon, the best TV antennas are easy to mount, have great range and resolution support, and give you options to adjust the gain so you can fine-tune the signal you receive.

There are a lot of reasons why someone should get a TV antenna . Despite the initial cost, a TV antenna could save you a lot of money by providing free local channels with a variety of programming. If you’ve cut the cord on cable but don’t want to buy a live TV streaming service , a TV antenna provides access to daytime, primetime, and sporting events completely free. The visual quality is often better than cable, too.

Whether your TV antenna is mounted outside or inside or is directional or multidirectional, its placement matters.

“There are a long list of factors that will affect signal strength in the home,” Denison says. “You want to consider what obstructions may be between the broadcast antenna and you. In most cases, that's going to be tall buildings or trees right around your home. It's hard to account for obstructions that are further away, plus they tend to have less impact.

He adds to watch out for other obstructions, such as "multiple walls, or other electronic devices. Sometimes, your home itself is a big blocker. In any case, where there are significant obstructions in or around the home, it may be a good idea to elevate the home antenna as much as possible.”

In a rural area, you may need an antenna with a longer supported range, since you probably live farther from a broadcast tower. However, that doesn’t mean you necessarily want a shorter range in urban areas. While it can be beneficial to target the nearest tower, that’s not always the best solution.

“In some cities/towns, whatever – the broadcast antennas will all be grouped in one area – usually on a high-elevation hill that overlooks as much real estate around it as possible,” Denison says. “But, when there are more than one good option for broadcast antenna location, you may end up with a broadcast antenna 15 miles due north from your home, and another located just 6 miles due east. Therefore it is important to buy an antenna that aims to pull in signal from the most distant broadcast antenna in your area.”

You can find a list of local broadcast towers using AntennaWeb , including how far away each one is. That will give you a starting point to what kind of range you need, and what kind of channels you can expect to pick up once you install your antenna.

You may need to experiment with placement, or even a couple of models to find the best solution, but this is a great place to start.

Most outdoor antennas are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including torrential rain, and even light hail. However, heavy snowstorms, very high winds, and other irregular weather patterns may push even the best outdoor antennas to their limits. Make sure that you mount your antenna carefully, with additional support if you expect heavy winds in your area. You can also check the temperature specifications of your antenna if you expect to be in a particularly hot or cold area at certain times of the year.

Buying an antenna that supports 4K and 8K resolutions will give you some future-proofing. That said, there’s no guarantee that any antenna bought now will support future broadcast standards. As with any technology, buy the best solution for you now with some upgrade potential in the future, but assume you will need to upgrade it one day if it continues to be your primary way of watching television.

As cord-cutters are abandoning cable in droves for the ever-expanding world of digital subscriptions, one underdog technology making an unexpected comeback is the humble TV antenna. Netflix and Crunchyroll aren’t going to carry your local news or sports, but fortunately, your local stations are still providing them for free, in the air all around you! The quality of over-air images has continued to go up ever since switching from analog to digital, so it’s quite a bit better than your memories of futzing with set-top rabbit ears to find hints of coherence in the static. Just like setting up Wi-Fi within your home, the spatial nature of over-the-air television means you’ll need to be deliberate about your antenna choice and placement to get the most bang for your buck. Fortunately, we’ve done all that research for you and are here to walk you through everything you need to know to pick one of the best TV antennas for your home.

  • Best overall: Antop AT-800SBS-J HD Smart Panel Antenna

With so many different particular needs to address, there isn’t really a single “best” TV antenna for that new OLED or QLED TV beaming entertainment into your home. We made our selections based on professional and consumer impressions, intending to cultivate a range of options that should suit the needs of most TV viewers in the United States, including options that will suit homes or apartments, rural areas or urban living, and more. These TV antenna reviews will help you find the best model for your needs.

The best TV antennas: Reviews & Recommendations

The best TV antennas are more powerful and accessible than ever. If you’re new to OTA television after a lifetime of cable or streaming and looking for an antenna for local channels, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how it looks. No matter your budget or needs, the best TV antenna to complete your setup is very likely here among the choices we’ve collected.

Antop AT-800SBS-J HD Smart Panel Antenna is the best indoor/outdoor TV antenna.

Antop Antenna Inc

  • Range: 85 miles
  • UHF/VHF: Both
  • Installation: Indoor/Outdoor
  • Size: 6 inches L x 10 inches W x 22 inches H
  • Flexible indoor or outdoor configuration
  • Includes both indoor stand and outdoor mounting pole
  • Great reception

Antop’s AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel Antenna is one of the best-performing indoor/outdoor versatile antennas, making it our pick for best overall. This HD TV antenna has a long range, particularly for an indoor model, and has a 4G LTE blocker to minimize signal interference. When placed inside, the white box with protruding poles on either side seems a little gaudy. When mounted on a roof, it’s one of the nicer-looking antennas, though. This digital TV antenna is expensive, but it provides unparalleled flexibility and high performance.

Best for outdoor: Antennas Direct 8-Element Bowtie TV Antenna

Antennas Direct 8-Element Bowtie is the best outdoor TV antenna.

Antennas Direct

  • Range: 70 miles
  • Installation: Attic/Outdoor
  • Gain: 17.4Dbi
  • Size: 36 inches L x 6 inches W x 48 inches H
  • Great performance
  • Flexibility from multiple aimable panels
  • Lifetime warranty on parts
  • Includes mounting hardware but requires mount and coaxial cable

Antennas Direct’s 8-Element Bowtie antenna is a solid workhorse that should be more than powerful enough for most people who have the space to mount it in an attic or, ideally, on the roof. Its eight separate antenna elements are split between four reflecting panels on two independently rotating shafts. These can be either aimed at a single target to better capture signals from a particular direction or spread out to catch a wider range. With a maximum range of 70 miles, 17.4 dBi gain, and flexible configuration, this outside TV antenna is a powerful all-purpose option. However, it requires some additional hardware to mount and connect fully.

Mohu Leaf Supreme Pro is the best indoor TV antenna.

  • Range: 65 miles
  • UHF/VHF: UHF, Hi-V
  • Installation: Indoor
  • Size: 21.5 inches L x 0.5 inches W x 12 inches H
  • Detachable cable
  • Larger than comparable indoor antennas

Mohu is one of the biggest manufacturers of indoor TV antennas for a reason. The Leaf Supreme Pro measures a commanding 12 x 21.5 inches, so it’s hard to ignore its presence. It’s a very thin, flat panel, though, so it can be easily installed in a high corner and features reversible black and white sides to make it as discreet as possible. The coaxial cable is also conveniently detachable, meaning you can avoid an unsightly wire going up your wall when you’re not actually using it.

On the plus side, this antenna for smart TV gets great range for an indoor antenna and comes with a separate, USB-powered amplifier that noticeably improves performance. Thin, flat indoor antennas generally don’t do quite as well as their outdoor counterparts, but this wireless antenna for TV gets pretty close without many tradeoffs.

Five Star Outdoor Digital Amplified HDTV Antenna is the best long range TV antenna.

  • Range: 200 miles
  • UHF/VHF : Both
  • Installation: Outdoor
  • Gain: 15 – 35 dB (boosted)
  • Size: 17 inches L x 8 inches W x 7 inches H
  • Fantastic long-range performance
  • 360-degree motorized coverage
  • Mounting pole and hardware included
  • Not the simplest assembly process

In search of the best indoor TV antenna 100 mile range? The Five Star Outdoor Digital Antenna boasts 200-mile, 360-degree coverage and the hardware to back it up. It features six reflector elements spread across three poles on a motorized spoke, which can eke out as much coverage as possible. It includes wiring and hardware for attaching up to five televisions, perfect for a large, remote home. It conveniently also includes a mounting pole. It requires a bit more assembly than other options, but you get a lot of coverage for your time and effort.

1byone Digital Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna is the best budget TV antenna.

  • Picks up nearby signals well
  • Does deliver on advertised range
  • Black on both sides and can’t be painted

For less than $30, 1byone’s Digital Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna is a very good bargain for a short-range indoor antenna. The consensus from trusted sites and critics suggests that it works great for apartment dwellers living in or nearby cities. It’s also a regular Amazon bestseller at 3.9/5 with over 14,000 reviews because it’s a cheap antenna that does the job, which is all a lot of people need. Despite a perhaps overly bold Amazon listing boasting a 200-mile range—an unrealistic claim for an indoor antenna—the 1byone works very well within the manufacturer-stated reasonable 50-mile range. That should be more than enough if you just want free TV with antenna to get channels and don’t care about maxing out range or extra features that make it easier to hide.

What to consider before buying one of the best TV antennas

TV antennas are very simple to set up and use, but picking one and TV antenna installation requires a little advanced planning. At the very least, you should know whether you want an indoor or outdoor TV antenna . Traditional, roof-mounted outdoor antennas are substantially more powerful for picking up station signals over a wider range but require permanent installation on your roof or another high place and require outdoor cable management. It takes some work and isn’t an option for most renters and apartment dwellers.

If an outdoor antenna isn’t feasible, smaller wall- and window-mounted indoor TV antennas must be fastened to a high spot in your space. They offer a shorter range but are far more discreet and easy to install. Indoor antennas are almost all omnidirectional because all the local interference of walls and windows tends to even out any benefit you might get from a targeted antenna like one would on their roof.

What do you want to watch?

TV antennas can only pick up local broadcast channels. For most of the United States, an antenna should catch local affiliates of FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC, The CW, and PBS, which all reach over 95% of American homes. In addition, some areas may have broadcast channels like Ion, Telemundo, and MeTV, as well as various public access stations. The number of channels you can find with an antenna will vary widely depending on where you are, with more options as you get closer to a major city.

If you want to find out antenna TV channels by zip code, there are several free tools online, including AntennaWeb and DTV Reception Maps from the Federal Trade Commission. Input your address, and you can find what stations are nearby, and what kind of antenna you’ll need to watch them. They also include maps of when the signals are actually broadcast, which can be important for some outdoor antennas.

Won’t the image quality be bad, though?

If you’ve ever watched a TV with built-in “bunny ear” antennas, you might assume that a broadcast TV signal will come in faded, with crackly black and white static (like the opening line of Neuromancer ). Fortunately, things have changed drastically since then. In 2009, the U.S. government mandated that TV stations transition from analog to digital broadcasting . As many cord-cutters have been pleasantly surprised to learn, digital signals broadcast over the air are often less compressed than the versions sent over landline by cable services. Major networks broadcast over the air (OTA) in Full HD, or 1080p, and many users claim their broadcast channels come in with brighter, crisper images and sound. You can find an HD free unlimited antenna to pick up those signals.

Why is this happening? Both cable and OTA transmissions will degrade over long distances, and cable signals often have to cover a much longer distance than your local station’s broadcast. Cable offers more channels, of course, but broadcast still has some utility.

Range and gain

There are two major specs you want to consider when looking at TV antennas: range and gain. An antenna’s maximum indicates how far away it can be from a station to pick up a broadcast signal. Generally speaking, having a higher range is always better. That said, some antennas boasting very high ranges achieve those stats using built-in signal amplifiers, which may not deliver stellar picture from stations out on the fringes of their extended ranges.

Gain, expressed in decibels (dB), measures how well a given antenna performs against a standard reference in picking up signals in a particular direction. As expected, a higher listed gain number means better performance, particularly with signals coming from the edges of your antenna’s range.

UHF and VHF

More than an underappreciated 1989 Weird Al vehicle , UHF (ultra-high frequency) and VHF (very-high frequency) are terms you’ll see while antenna shopping. They refer to the bands of frequency on which particular channels are broadcast. Most contemporary channels are on UHF, but there are still VHF broadcasts out there.

This distinction mostly matters for outdoor antenna users, since most indoor antennas are UHF or combined, but even nominally UHF-only will usually pick up VHF stations regardless. The online tools for finding your local broadcasters mentioned above will include this information about each station. Many antennas are advertised explicitly for both. In general, this is only something you need to worry about if a critical mass of broadcasts you care about are VHF, especially Lo-V.

Q: How much do TV antennas cost?

The cost of TV antennas ranges from about $20 for basic models to more than $125 for options with a longer range, smart features, and a blocker that minimizes signal interference, such as the Antop AT-800SBS-J HD Smart Panel Antenna .

Q: Are antennas worth it?

Yes, antennas are worth it. Rather than going the way of the dinosaur, OTA broadcast technology has actually improved quite a bit in the last decade or so. If you’re dropping your cable subscription, an antenna can be a great, low, one-time investment for a lifetime of free local programming.

Q: What range antenna do I need?

Ideally, you want an antenna to pick up all nearby local channels. The exact range you’ll need for that will depend on where you live. Generally speaking, the closer you are to a large town or city, the lower the range required to get what you want out of your antenna. As we mentioned in our section on finding nearby channels, there are online tools for determining where your nearby broadcast signals are coming from.

Q: Where is the best place to put an indoor TV antenna?

Generally speaking, you want to put your TV antenna as high as possible. Ideally, you also want to minimize the number of things that might get between your antenna and the TV station’s broadcast tower. That’s why the best ones are, often, outdoor models you mount on your roof. For indoor antennas, look for a high window, or consider running wires so you can set it up near an exterior wall in an attic. These are general best practices; the only way to find the best spot in your home is to experiment with different spots until you’re satisfied with the picture quality.

Final thoughts on the best TV antennas

If you’re considering joining the cord-cutting wave or have done so and miss your local channels, a TV antenna could be the perfect way to round out your TV setup. The exact type and model you need will depend on several factors, but you can rest assured that there is almost certainly a great option out there for you at a very reasonable price.

What to consider

In some areas, the TV signal may be nonexistent, but it doesn’t cost much to find out if an indoor antennas is for you.

The sweet spot for an indoor antenna is between $20 and $40.

Form factor

Most modern antennas are flat and window-mounted, and while you can opt for a large desktop model, the reception won’t be as good.

Look for a model which allows a detachable cable for added flexibility.

There has never been a better time to  cut the cord  and replace it with free TV. All you need to do before buying an affordable TV antenna is make sure that you're living in an area with a good signal. You don't even need to climb on your roof, as the best indoor antennas can be hung in a window.

An over-the-air, or OTA, antenna is great for live events such as sports and the evening news, plus the next evolution of OTA called NextGen TV, You can receive oodles of free content for as little as $20 shipped. Here's the best indoor antennas we've tested.

Detachable or captive cables. You choose!

What's the best overall TV antenna?

The best indoor antenna, based on dozens of CNET's tests, is the Mohu Leaf. It gathered the most stations in two different locations, and it can be yours for $35. Its sibling the Mohu Gateway was also a strong performer, and it has the advantage of tabletop use. However, if you're curious about the other options that are out there, or are interested in features such as signal boosters or detachable cables, the following are the best indoor OTA antennas right now.

best yacht tv antennas

The best TV antennas we tested

  • Excellent performance
  • Easy to install
  • No detachable cable

Best antenna overall

The Mohu Leaf has undergone a recent upgrade -- a new look and some under-the-hood improvements -- and the results speak for themselves. The Leaf was the best antenna of our current crop -- beating out several more expensive models. It worked well in both of the testing environments and was able to receive the most channels. While the Channel Master Flatenna is almost half the price, the Mohu Leaf is undoubtedly worth the $15 upgrade.

My only quibble with the new Leaf is that it has lost the detachable coaxial cable in the process, and this means you'll need another cable and a male-to-male adaptor if you want a longer run to your TV.

2023-antennas-4

  • Great for rooms without windows
  • Captive cable
  • Not as good as window-mounted models

Best tabletop antenna

Mohu gateway.

Maybe you don't have a window or an out-of-the-way wall you can stick an antenna on, and if so the Mohu Gateway can help. This tabletop antenna was neck and neck with its Leaf stablemate on both reception quality and price. But what clinched it for us was that the Leaf was better suited for window placement, and with its integrated stand the Gateway was understandably too awkward to be attached to a window. The reception on the Gateway was also worse when sitting on an AV unit instead of in a window, but if you have nowhere else to put an antenna than on a stand the Gateway is the best choice.

  • Longest cable of models tested
  • Amp switch offers flexibility
  • Amplifiers can make reception worse

Best antenna with amplifier

Gesobyte amplified hd digital tv antenna.

In my years of testing antennas, the Gesobyte is still one of the only amplified models which has an attenuator switch. This feature allows a flexibility which none of the other models have. Live close to a broadcast tower? Turn the switch to Low. Or, if you live further away, switch it to High for an added signal boost.

2023-antennas-3

  • The Channel Master Flatenna is a solid antenna at an incredibly low price. It outperforms more expensive designs in both the number of channels it can pick up and the strength of the signal.
  • The antenna has a short, non-replaceable cable. There are no fasteners included in the box.

Best budget TV antenna

Channel master flatenna 35/duo.

The Flatenna 35 has been upgraded with a removable cable since our original test. This antenna is great for people who simply want to test the waters, and while it wasn't the best performer, it's good for the money. If you want to find out if an indoor antenna is right for you, this is a great option.

Factors to consider when choosing a TV antenna

Several different black and white flat TV antennas laid out against a red background.

Coverage: In some places, the TV signal of some channels can be spotty or nonexistent due to faraway broadcast towers or obstructions that break up the signal. Also, unlike a  live TV streaming service , OTA TV is usually restricted to a single television, and the broadcast signal from an OTA TV antenna won't work on phones or other devices. Unless, that is, you kick it up a notch with an OTA DVR  that has networking capabilities. Thankfully, indoor antennas are affordable enough that you can find out for yourself how strong your signal is without a big outlay.

Cost: The sweet spot for an indoor antenna is between $20 and $40, and if you’re paying any more than this, it’s likely for features you probably don’t need. If that's you, then maybe you should consider installing an external antenna instead.

Form factor: Forget the old rabbit ears of days gone past, most modern antennas are flat and optimized to receive transmissions in a single plane. Almost every indoor antenna available is designed to be stuck to a surface like a wall or a window, and there’s even clear models if you’re concerned about the antenna blocking your view. If you don’t want a long cable messing with your living space you can opt for a desktop standing model, but the tradeoff is that the reception won’t be as good.

Cable length: If your TV is close to the outer walls of your home then you won’t need a long run, but be aware that some of these models have short, attached cables and you may require more length. Look for a model which allows a detachable cable for added flexibility.

Amplifier: Nine times out of 10, a gain amplifier doesn’t offer any benefits and instead tends to muddy the reception waters -- and add extra expense. It can be good to boost the signal of some stations, but it can also overload ones which you already receive well. The net result is less channels overall. If you do opt for an amp try it with and without it connected to see what you like best. The best advice we can give is to buy the cheapest nonamplified model you can and try it out. If you get too few or no channels, then not even an amplified indoor antenna will change that. If that's the case, then an external antenna is the next best option.

Top antennas compared

Other tv antennas we tested.

  • Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse : With its ankh-shaped and multidirectional reversible compact design, the ClearStream antenna is definitely unique. This multi-directional antenna comes with sticky tabs for attaching it to your window, which is handy. And if you need more signal oomph, there's a $20 antenna amplifier available as well. A previous winner in this category, the Eclipse didn't perform as well as the Mohu units -- especially in our LA location.
  • Ultra Vizion HD Digital TV Antenna : The Ultra Vizion is one of the most striking antennas we've seen thanks to its Perspex construction. It's large, and while it performed well when presented with line of sight to a broadcast antenna it came last when tested in suburban LA.

2023-antennas-5

The Btfdreem is a desktop antenna. Move along, please.

  • Btfdreem Smart TV Antenna : Have you ever bought a product off Amazon which has a good rating, but you can't work out why? The Btfdreem is one of those. Sure it looks like a rocket ship, but that's all it has going for it. While it did OK in LA, it was one of the worst performers overall in this test.
  • 1byOne Indoor Amplified HDTV Antenna : Last reviewed in 2021, the 1byOne includes a nonremovable coax cable, and at only 10 feet long, it may not work in some rooms where it cannot pick up a very weak signal. It was toward the bottom of the previous pack in terms of signal performance, but this indoor HDTV antenna was the only television antenna to pick up CBS from a TV tower at our Manhattan location.

03-tv-antenna-2019

The U Must Have Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna.

  • U Must Have Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna : The U Must Have amplified antenna comes with a sticky pad on the back and a relatively long, though non-removable, lead at 18 feet. The included amplifier gives the antenna some flexibility and the product feels more solidly made overall than the 1byOne, though they performed similarly. Last reviewed in 2021.

How we test TV antennas

We tested seven different indoor antennas with prices ranging from $20 to $50 (all much less than the most basic cable TV service). The best TV antennas were able to pull in more channels than the others and delivered stronger, clearer TV signals, even on "problem" channels. Here are the seven TV antennas we looked at:

  • Antennas Direct Clearstream : $40
  • Btfdreem Smart TV Antenna: $29
  • Channel Master Flatenna : $20
  • Gesobyte Amplified HD Digital TV Antenna: $30
  • Mohu Gateway: $35
  • Mohu Leaf: $35
  • Ultra Vizion HD Digital TV Antenna: $44

While most of the antennas were made by "name" manufacturers, the Gesobyte and the Btfdreem were chosen specifically because they were two of the highest-selling antennas on Amazon.

Much like real estate, how well a TV antenna works is based on location, location and location. We tested the antennas in two main places: in uptown Manhattan, New York with a line of sight to a broadcast tower six miles away, and in Reseda California, at least 10 miles from the closest tower. Depending on your own location, you might receive broadcasts from multiple antennas. Hills or large buildings in the way will have an effect on frequency range and reception of TV channels.

We situated each antenna in the same spot each time and connected it to the TiVo Edge , which gives signal strength data as well as a total channel count. We used two different metrics to determine which TV antenna performed best. The first was a raw measure of the number of channels it could detect, while the second involved a number of predetermined "problem channels." For these, we consulted a list of channels culled from various forums, for both testing areas, and gauged how well the antennas pulled in each channel.

tivo-edge-05

The TiVo Edge is an OTA recorder for cord-cutters.

Our list of "problem" channels in Manhattan was WABC 7.1 (ABC), WNET 13.1 (PBS), WPIX 11.1 (CW -- Manhattan only) and WNJB 58.1 (PBS -- New Jersey only). In addition we added popular channels CBS 2.1, WNBC 4 (NBC), and WNYW 5 (Fox). Meanwhile, we compiled a list of channels in LA including KCBS 2.1 (CBS), KNBC 4.1 (NBC), KTLA 5.1 (CW), KABC 7.1 (ABC), KTTV 11.1 (FOX), KCOP 13.1 (MyNetwork) and KCET 28.1 (PBS).

While the outcome will vary depending on where you live and how far you are from TV towers, in our tests the best-performing models received the greatest number of popular channels as well as local channels, radio broadcasts and Spanish-language stations.

Most of the TV antennas were based on the same rectangular design, but there was one important consideration: the cable. Did the antenna have a long, high-performance coaxial cable or, even better, a detachable one? You'll be sticking one of these in your window, which could be a long way from your TV, so longer is better.

It's worth noting that some of these antennas -- the Btfdreem, Gesobyte and the Ultra Vizion Plus -- included gain-boosting amplifiers. Based on our experiences in a number of locations over the years, amplifiers can affect signal strength in wildly unpredictable ways. The Ultra Vizion wouldn't work at all with the amp attached, while the others did. The numbers printed above are the best results with or without amplification. If you can't get TV reception with an indoor antenna, a gain amp may not actually help you, and in other cases, it could make your reception worse by overloading channels that already have a strong signal.

antennas-08.jpg

Several antennas in our list include a powered amplifier, but use thoughtfully, as these may actually make a strong signal worse.

TV antenna FAQs

Do i need an antenna for a smart tv.

Every television on the market has an OTA tuner onboard, even if most people never use it. If it doesn't have one then it's a monitor -- the tuner is the essential difference. The advent of smart TV means that cord-cutters can now connect directly to the internet and get on-demand streaming, as well as live TV. Streaming usually costs a subscription fee, while an antenna can receive free signals and without an internet connection. You don't need an antenna to use smart TV, but the two do complement each other very well.

Do indoor antennas really work?

Depending on where you live, an indoor antenna can work really well, or not at all. If you live in the middle of a city, it's likely you're very close to a broadcast antenna. However, if you live a little further out then you may not be receiving the strongest signals and checking  digital TV coverage maps  first may help you somewhat.

Correspondingly, if you do live in a poor coverage area, with weak signals,  an indoor antenna may not be for you . In addition to LA and NYC, we tried using the antennas at a semi-urban location in New York State's Hudson Valley and found none of the antennas worked at all -- even with the signal-boosting Channel Master Smartenna. That's why it's best to test the signal strength waters with a cheap antenna first, instead of spending a hundred bucks on something that might not work in your location.

Will my antenna work with ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV?

ATSC 3.0 , also known as NextGen TV, is the next evolution of OTA broadcasts, and it promises higher resolutions, enhanced audio and interactivity. While these NextGen TV features are still a ways off -- the service is still in the process of rolling out -- the good news is that it's designed to be backwards compatible with the existing ATSC. So yes, your existing antenna will still work, though you will need an ATSC 3.0 compatible tuner or TV , and an active internet connection for any interactive or on-demand features.

How do you install an indoor antenna?

Most contemporary antennas include some form of adhesive to attach them to your wall or window. If for some reason they lack this option you could try packing tape or poster putty instead.

When you install it, you will definitely need to experiment with the placement. A wall may actually be better than a window, depending on the orientation of your living area. Also, if possible, keep the antenna away from magnetic metals such as security bars or the like since they can interfere with your signal strength.

If you buy a model with a short, captive lead be aware that you may need to buy a male-female extension lead, and more coaxial cable, to get it to reach your equipment. For more on installing an antenna check out our complete guide and video .

The 6 best TV antennas for rural areas in 2024

John Alexander

It’s not a secret, if you live in a rural area, you’re likely underserved by the most popular cable, internet, and live TV streaming services . TV antennas, however, will let you pick up signals from far away, with the result being consistent, free programming. And with the advent of ATSC 3.0 , which brings in higher definition pictures and improved features to over-the-air broadcasting, now is as good a time as ever to get an antenna. So much so that our A/V section editor has, somewhat anachronistically, been telling us that you finally need to get an antenna in 2024 .

Yet still, the world belongs to urbanites. Admittedly, many of our picks for the best TV antennas are indoor only, or don’t have the power to get broadcast signal as far as you might need it from your rural home. Here, we’re taking a better look at those that  do work best for rural areas and places otherwise underserved by the modern titans of entertainment. We’ll present a quick list of the best TV antennas for rural areas, followed by an in-depth look at why each one will serve your home well, and then finish off with insights into our reasoning for why we selected these TV antennas.

The best TV antennas for rural areas

  • Buy the for a powerful, long-range antenna with everything you need to use it.
  • Buy the for a cheaper, but slightly less powerful alternative that is still suitable for many areas.
  • Buy the for a yagi antenna with great control.
  • Buy the for a great unidirectional antenna.
  • Buy the for a multi-use antenna that can mount to the side of your wall or balcony.
  • Buy the for a surprisingly cheap antenna with good durability.

Antennas Direct ClearStream 4MAX Kit

Best complete kit with great performance.

  • The 5 best outdoor projectors in 2024
  • Shokz sale: Get up to 31% off bone conduction headphones
  • Home theater receiver sale: Save on Yamaha, Sony, and more

To get started simply with a quality TV antenna, consider this kit from Antennas Direct. It includes a TV antenna that can be mounted to your roof with a simple bracket design, a 30-foot coaxial cable to transport what it receives to your home, and a splitter for up to three TVs to enjoy the entertainment at once. In other words, this is a good pick for everyone in the family to enjoy over-the-air programming, wherever they are in your home.

The Antennas Direct ClearStream 4MAX weighs under three pounds and relatively easy to transport to your roof. It has a simple bolt-and-bracket mechanism for attaching to your roof, and all of the essentials — such as a 30-foot coaxial cable to port what it receives down into your home — are included in the packaging. As a result, we quite like this one. It doesn’t take an expert to get all of the appropriate and compatible wires and other equipment to make the experience great. You’ll also get extras, like an amplifier switch, which makes amplification (a sometimes-beneficial option for modern TV antennas) a snap. All-in-all, this kit is going to be on the expensive side, but that’s because it has everything and is rather powerful.

Antennas Direct ClearStream 2MAX

Best runner-up.

As a sort of “downgrade” to the Antennas Direct ClearStream 4Max, the 2Max variety is just fine for many people. It has a 60 mile effective range, only slightly lower than the previous, but a considerably lower profile and cost than the 4MAX version. The main reason for this is that it is not the full kit that you can get with the 4MAX, so if you know what you’re doing or are willing to shop around, you’ll be able to save quite a bit of money. Furthermore, skipping out on extras like the splitter might save you quite a bit of money on superfluous extras that your home doesn’t need.

Otherwise, many of the features will be the same. The installation should be quite similar with a bracket-and-bolt design. There’s also a 20-foot mast (an upwards-facing pole) that comes with the kit for easy installation and to give you a bit of extra height. At a total of less than two pounds, anybody comfortable with ladders and climbing should be able to transport this to the roof. Finally, it is worth noting that this product has a lifetime manufacturer antenna warranty, so even though it doesn’t appear to be too tough, it should last you for the long term.

PBD WA-2608

Best yagi antenna.

If you can collectively decided on what to watch as a family, you may find that you’d like to “aim” at the broadcasting tower directly. While most TV antennas are capable of bi-directional reception gathering, getting most signal around you, a yagi aims in a uni-directional way. The PBD WA-2608 aims at whatever station you want, even when the stations you want are in multiple directions around you. For example, if the PBS station is to your North and the FOX station is to your South, you can press the red rotation button until the PBD WA-S608 points Northward to get PBS, then press and hold the button again until it points Southward to pick up FOX. You might find that you occasionally need to readjust your aim, but once you get used to it, the whole process should be relatively smooth.

The PBD WA-2608 is lightning protected and comes with a 40-foot RG6 coaxial cable that is able to connect well with the antenna and receiver. You’ll appreciate its ability to support two TVs without additional splitting required. It’s easily bolted to the roof and can be placed on the side of the wall as well, but that configuration will reduce the efficacy of its 360-degree rotation, so we don’t recommend it.

Five Star Yagi Antenna

Best uni-directional.

The Five Star Yagi Antenna is probably the best TV antenna for you if you live in a rural area just outside of the city limits of a place with many broadcasting stations. It’s point-and-shoot yagi antenna design does not move easily or remotely, but once you have the proper aim lined up, you’ll be able to get a great reception for those key stations. There’s even a 4-way splitter included, so the whole family can enjoy great programming in separate rooms.

Five Star states a range of 200 miles for their yagi antenna, which we assume is a somewhat theoretical range. In reality, the curvature of the Earth will likely prevent you from getting a full 200 miles except under very specific situations. This all being said, real customer reports and experiences with the Five Star Yagi Antenna from all over the glob are quite positive, including with the range. The only real negative for this design is, again, its lack of control in directionality. But, if you’re in the kind of situation where all of the main broadcast stations are generally coming from one area, this TV antenna is a great way for you to maximize your chances of getting great reception.

Antop AT-800SBS

Best for apartments.

While we expect most rural TV antenna users to be living in a home or other dwelling with rooftop access, we also know that isn’t always the case. The Antop AT-800SBS is the best TV antenna for rural areas if you’re not a homeowner. It has so many great ways that it can be mounted. While rooftop, side-of-the-wall, and even indoor options are available, there is a choice that we think you’ll really appreciate — balcony mounting.

The Antop AT-800SBS has vertical and horizontal “mast bars” that can quite easily be affixed to the bars of your balcony’s perimeter. While this will naturally limit your reception capabilities to the generalized direction that the TV antenna is facing, it is certainly better than nothing and not a fault of the antenna itself. You can alternatively attempt to place it outside of or even inside of a window, but before you place anything outside of your unit (even on the exterior of your balcony wall) be sure to contact your property manager or, at the very least, check your lease. Note, also, that the Antop AT-800SBS is somewhat heavier and bulkier than you might first expect, so be sure to check out the dimensions before you get creative.

A final word while we’re discussing the capabilities of the Antop AT-800SBS, it can handle FM radio, too! This means that if you’re getting a TV antenna for emergency preparedness, you can use it to get both television news and those all-critical FM news broadcasts. Just makes sure you have a portable power station and enough shielding to have the device weather through whatever storm you’re facing.

GE Outdoor UltraPro

Best budget.

If you want to go all in on the free entertainment aspect of TV antennas, check out GE’s Outdoor UltraPro antenna, which can be mounted outside or in your attic (as shown on the box). It has a large body with a durable construction, though it is at least partially made of plastic. That being said, GE gives it a lifetime warranty, so we expect the long-term durability and usage to be quite high. A bit of wind won’t rip it apart.

The surprising low point for the GE Outdoor UltraPro is  not range, which rocks out at 70 miles, but rather the difficulty in its assembly. While paper instructions are included, the paper they’re on is tiny, and hard to read. Taking your glasses up on the roof, flipping through the pages, and then having a quick burst of wind sending the manual a mile down the road could be a nightmare. Either take pictures of the pages on a low-cost tablet and take that up with you, or do as much pre-assembly as you can before ascending your ladder.

How we chose these TV antennas for rural areas

What matters to you, as a person living in a rural area, when you buy a TV antenna? Obviously, individuality matters, and it is no way fair to make large-scale assumptions about your wants or needs. However, there are some consistent features of the environment and infrastructure that are worth considering when making a selection of TV antenna. All of our selections for the best TV antennas for rural areas, above, were made with most or all of the following assumptions in mind.

You have fewer nearby broadcasting stations

The vast majority of broadcast centers are going to be centered near cities. They have resources for employees, a vast customer base, and the opportunity to make the most money. And, even should there be a broadcast station near you, there is probably only one or perhaps two. You can check your home out for yourself via the FCC’s DTV Reception Map database , though to get a better picture of what’s going on in your location.

On the website, you can click each station to see where it is located relative to your position, including how many miles away it is and a direction (useful for when you want to point your antenna directly towards it for the best possible reception). It is also useful to pay attention to the  band listed, where you’ll see UHF, Lo-V, and/or Hi-V. These refer to the UHF and UHV bands that your antenna will advertise being able to find.

Taking these factors into   consideration , we looked for TV antennas that have at least 40 miles of estimated range, but more was  always considered better for rural customers. Additionally, antennas that supported both UHF and UHV were most preferred. Your local circumstances will let you know if you can get by with one or the other band. Any ability to rotate the antenna remotely was considered positive. Note that we have mixed feelings about amplification, which — as the word implies — amplifies signal. It does not refine said signal. So, if a signal is fuzzy, the amplified version could very well be fuzzier.

You have roof access

Home ownership (or rental) tend to be quite high in the US at large, and the census reports that homeownership rates are highest in rural America . As such, there is a broad assumption that you have access to a roof, trailer-top, or even van top. As such, we’re looking at outdoor antennas. If you’re an apartment dweller in a rural community, you can try an indoor antenna, but you also might be out of luck. Discuss your entertainment situation with your property manager before proceeding.

While we’re on the topic of the roof and being outdoors, it is worthy to mention that we understand the diverse environments of rural areas. The tree coverage and branch proximity to your rooftop — which can present challenges to both reception-getting and the health and integrity of your antenna — are going to be largely different in the rural areas 40 miles from Topeka, Kansas and those 40 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee. Likewise, weather and wind will differ in these areas. At the same time, winds can be stronger and the likelihood of being hit by a branch in a storm are naturally larger in these areas.

Taking these factors into consideration , we looked for outdoor antennas that have high durability and varying profiles of size. A decently long warranty with good coverage was also worth looking into. Any factors that gave the antenna weather protection were considered highly positive.

You plan on a DIY installation

Chances are, if you live in a rural area, you are at least considering doing the antenna installation yourself or with a local crew of your buddies. While we know this isn’t going to be the case for everyone, it is still worth considering what makes an installation easy. Lower weights and compact, foldable form factors certainly help. Be sure to check our favorite coaxial cables for TV antennas while you’re at it to ensure a smooth installation process.
