“Those boats are quaint but not very practical,” says Morong. “Few people want 1930s gas engines or wire-and-sprocket steering systems; they like boats with the appeal of yesteryear but want modern systems and propulsion. They usually ask us to create something different from the shells of their grandparents’ boats.”

Interestingly, vessels handed down within families comprise the majority of inquiries Yachting Solutions receives, though there can be a tendency to balk at the cost of the restomod process. “I often tell them that the cost of the project, as a rule of thumb, will be more than the cost of a similar-sized new production boat, but less than a new custom project designed from a fresh sheet of paper,” says Morong.

Avocette, Huckins Fairform Flyer at Yachting Solutions Rockland Maine.

Some rise to the challenge, such as the owner of Avocette. The 1931 Fairform Flyer, built by Huckins , had a number of caretakers who kept it in shipshape condition but was ready for a refresh after nearly 20 years of neglect.

“It was a basket case,” says the owner, noting that, beyond rotting wood, a fire had consumed the interior. In 2016, he decided to return Avocette to its former glory, but with caveats: It had to be safe and comfortable, and its 1930s heritage needed to be preserved. As for the project, “it wasn’t for the faint of heart,” he says. “We made so many decisions, it became a custom design.”

The process also included moving the new engines aft—the 1931 Sterling Petrel engines were replaced with 450 hp Volvo Penta Diesels with IPS pods—as well as adding a C-Zone digital onboard- management system and repositioning the galley forward to provide a contemporary dining space with a skylight. Then there’s the new salon, highlighted by an Art Deco fireplace and wood-beamed ceilings that reflect the increased headroom throughout.

Most restomods don’t involve 90-year-old donor vessels. Yachting Solutions’ other projects range from a ’63 Bertram 31 to a 2014 Intrepid. The Intrepid’s owner wanted a much higher level of customization than the factory was willing to do, essentially turning a bare fiberglass fishing vessel into a New England–style wood-clad runabout. At the lower end, Metan Marine of Lakeville, Mass., has made a name for itself by reinterpreting 17-foot Boston Whalers from the late 1960s.

Morong also points out that, rather than simply upgrading hidden components like engines, many yards are exercising a wider artistic license over exterior designs. Cooley Marine , in Stratford, Conn., recently finished work on a ’69 Bertram 31, retaining its classic lines but adding a blue-tinted windshield that resembles “a huge pair of Costa sunglasses,” according to founder Andrew Cooley. “We started with the bare hull and tried to install every feature on the owner’s 50-foot Tiara,” he says.

Which is the exact mission statement of a restomod.

Moores Marine, Inc . has completed more than 100 major restoration projects in their 35 years of expert service. Names like Trumpy and Defoe are a few of the names in representation at the Moores facility; owners of these iconic crafts, reminiscent of a bygone era, trust in Jim Moores and his team to uphold the design principles in truest fashion.

My world is to respect the masters that built the boat and to bring it back if possible

Moores is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers , Trumpy Yacht Association and The Antique and Classic Boat Society . He also acts as a nautical archaeologist, salvaging original boat parts from derelicts headed to the scrapyard. “In our N.C. facility, half of my warehouse is full of antique boat parts.”

Once they’re lost, that’s part of American history that disappears. And that’s kind of the reason for me being in this crazy business. I would like to preserve as many of these boats as I can…it’s my career.

The Beaufort office displays original teak furniture and the deckhouse (which doubles as Moores’ personal office) rescued from the Trumpy Ibis . The captain’s lounge is adorned with photos, lady figureheads, a ship’s wheel, models of schooners, and a coffee table made from the Presidential yacht Honey Fitz ’s hull. Each artifact has a story that Jim Moores tells well.

Moores spent years building commercial fishing boats and dories in Lubec, Maine before focusing on Trumpy restorations. “It’s hard to find people that really know what they are doing. Just because you’ve built a dinghy, doesn’t make you a boat builder, so I’m always training people. If you can’t do good work, you won’t be working for me, I guarantee it. I’m more like a conductor now, than a flute player. I’m more of the person who looks at the whole thing, instructs the project on how things are put back together and how things are done. I’m still very involved in the projects we do, especially when we get the big projects; I’m onsite more than in my office. I do get my hands dirty, trust me. I’ll grab a grinder, or whatever it takes.”

“It’s not the ones that can be saved; it’s the ones that can’t be saved” Moores says, reminiscing on his work. “There [are] only a handful of Defoes left on the planet… I’m not just talking about Defoes, I’m talking about Consolidated, Alden, and New York Yachts left. Once they’re lost, that’s part of American history that disappears. And that’s kind of the reason for me being in this crazy business. I would like to preserve as many of these boats as I can…it’s my career.”

Searching for original parts to truly restore the boat, though, can be unsuccessful. “We find an owner of a similar boat, we talk to them and say, ‘I need to borrow parts off your boat’, and when they get over that, I make rubber molds of them. We’ve even done lost wax processes on some of them. It’s kind of an expensive way to make parts, but it’s worked very well.”

Moores has turned down wooden boat restoration projects in the past because owners wanted to drastically change the boat’s structural integrity, and he didn’t want his work associated with it. “I think every owner wants to put their own touch on the boat. It’s reality. Most things can be changed back, like wallpaper, but I’ve had people that want to knock out walls, and I’ve had to explain they were structural bulkheads. I’ve worked for billionaires that asked me to do stuff like that, and I just say my work’s not for sale.”

“My world is to respect the masters that built the boat and to bring it back if possible. That may involve technology, but I try to remain true to the original builder. Yes, we do laminate wood because we have to, and steaming wood wouldn’t do for the things we do. When we did the Honey Fitz , and the schooner, Summerwind (1929 John G. Alden), we found vertical sawn wood where the annual growth rings were less than 1/8 of an inch apart, which is called “aircraft certified.” We had to find the right materials to do the job. If she was originally built out of Douglas fir, then she was rebuilt out of Douglas fir with the same quality; I want these boats to be as original as possible. ”

Moores says the biggest problem he sees is owners hiring unskilled workers first, because it’s cheaper. Those same owners often end up coming to him in the end to make corrections, and pay twice for the work. “Boats are a dream, and if it becomes a nightmare, usually you get rid of it. It’s a very delicate balance to keep the boat safe and keep the owners safe as time goes on… My goal is to perpetuate these boats into the future.”

Jim Moores. Photo Credit: Moores Marine, Inc.

Wearing a 1930’s style yachting cap, Moores is seen weekly on his 1947 Trumpy, the Aurora II , one of several that John Trumpy built for himself to test out his latest innovations. “With these boats, the destination is not that important, it’s like life… it’s about the journey, not the destination.”

Moores observes how people react to seeing the Aurora , “…people walk out on a pier, or a car stops and they get out. They don’t know a Trumpy, they don’t know the history of a Trumpy, don’t know anything about it, but they know about beauty. They go ‘Wow, that’s a beautiful boat.’  If I put in at a dock and the dock is full of $10 million or $15 million yachts, they stop to look at my Trumpy.” To Jim Moores, beauty is worth saving.

Squeezed into a boatshed on Eastern Long Island, the sailing vessel Chicane is a long way and many years from home.

Designed by the well-known and innovative Scottish naval architect Alfred Mylne and built by A.M. Dickie and Sons in 1926, Chicane , with a full keel and long overhang, looks like the kind of sailing ship that is not only fast but comfortable as well. The woodwork on deck and down below is of museum quality. Even sitting in the shed, the feel of the boat is one of power and class. Planked with quarter-sawn Burmese teak, Chicane is 62 feet LOA, draws a little bit more than 7 feet and displaces 26 tons.

Chicane has been in the same Bermudian family since 1958 when William Kempe sailed the boat to Bermuda from England. In 1975, his nephew Reid bought the boat. Shipwrights Joe Postich and Wendy Bliss began principal restoration work on Chicane , often incorporating advice and support from experts in the industry, including Donn Costanzo of Greenport, N.Y.-based Wooden Boatworks Inc.

Alfred Mylne began his career as an apprentice to George Lennox Watson, who designed the Royal Cutter Yacht HMY Britannia , a racing cutter. He set up his own office in 1896 and was instrumental in establishing the International Metre Rule. He also designed race-winning 19-, 15- and 12-meter yachts. Though often overshadowed in public knowledge by his Scottish contemporary, William Fife, Mylne is now considered to have been an innovative designer in his day.

Yacht Restorations and Refurbishments

The words and the work behind yacht refurbishment, yacht restoration, and yacht repair may seem similar, but they couldn’t be more different.

Unfortunately, there is no standard definition for what constitutes restoration and what constitutes refurbishment. It is highly dependent on the technician’s idea of the work at hand.

The hardest part of yacht restoration and refurbishment is finding a quality and trusted, local Fort Lauderdale boatyard that holds itself to high standards.

Finding a trustworthy yacht technician is 70% of the work.

With that in mind, Yacht Management, a South Florida boatyard  and service center, wants to take a shot at defining these slippery terms to provide a little insight and hopefully some clarity when it comes to deciding whether your yacht needs a refurbishment, repair, or restoration.

  • Yacht Refurbishment

Refurbishment can be interchanged with the words reconditioning or refinishing. It’s the first option available, but not always the best.

Yacht refurbishment requires less work to bring the vessel back to a functioning state. If there is less of a need for new marine parts, but rather the existing parts could be refurbished to work, that constitutes a refurbishment.

The end goal is to ensure that the yacht functions and looks good again. A yacht refurbishment shouldn’t be used to save money, but rather if that’s all the vessel needs.

  • Yacht Restoration

Restoration is much like rebuilding a yacht.

The purpose of yacht restoration is to bring the vessel back to its original state; installing new parts, removing damage, and replacing it.

Not only will the yacht look good and function well, the restored parts will last longer and perform much better than if the yacht was refurbished.

The idea is to return the yacht to its former glory, bring it back to life, and ready to make new memories on it. Reset to factory settings.

Restoration that is not handled by professionals or a skilled yacht technician can leave the yacht in worse condition than before. Small structural anomalies could lead to even bigger issues long term. It’s vital to find the right yacht technician for the job.

  • Yacht Repair

Yacht repair should only be necessary if the vessel has sustained damage. Yacht refurbishment and yacht restoration are preventative, whereas yacht repair is a cure. Repair is close to the realm of restoration. If repair is necessary, then the situation is likely more serious. Repairs are synonymous with serious damage.

Yacht Restorations and Refurbishments Separator

Yacht Management’s experienced marine technicians in South Florida explain the differences between yacht repair, yacht restoration, yacht refurbishment.

How to Find a Good Boatyard and Service Center

There’s no avoiding the three R’s of any boatyard. The sea won’t just let anyone pass through gently, we all must pay a tariff, and that’s why Yacht Management of South Florida spends time inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vessels under our care.

Find a yacht technician that’s in your corner. As mentioned before, finding a marine technician in South Florida that is both experienced and trusted is the most difficult part of the job.

Look for reviews, ask around, and visit your local South Florida marina to get a feeling for the boatyard’s standards.

Don’t stick with a poor yacht technician simply because they have worked on your vessel for a long period of time. Find a tech that you know will refurbish, restore or repair up to your standards.

Fife’s “Ultimate” 8-Metre: Ierne

ierne under sail

Every now and again a restoration comes along that redefines what can be expected in terms of the resurrection of classic yachts. At one time it was satisfactory to sheathe classic yachts in GRP below the waterline and there was also a fad for “modernising” historic craft, thereby obliterating their true heritage. Of course, all manner of adjustments and trickery seem still to be justified in the name of winning races; and to some it is still reasonable to simply close the shed doors on a rebuild and produce a new yacht while throwing away all that remains of the old. But these are other stories and most of these ideas, thankfully, have been surpassed by hard-working craftsmen striving to produce restoration perfection. The relaunch of the Fife III, First Rule 8-Metre, Ierne , in 2008, went a long way towards redefining what levels of authenticity, purity and craftsmanship could be expected, and this was achieved far way from the big-name restoration yards.

Ierne racing

It’s fair to say that the Ierne project has put its shipwright, Joe Irving of Draughtsman Yachts , Barton upon Humber, onto the classic restoration map – if there is one. Not least because any map of the UK’s renowned yacht restorers would not have had much colouring-in around Joe’s native East Yorkshire. But this is where the project was completed in its entirety, pulling in resources from the surrounding area whenever possible, and it was by far the largest project that Joe had undertaken to that time. When it was completed the restoration project gained wide acclaim for its quality and authenticity, and Ierne was rightly awarded the Classic Boat magazine Restoration of the Year prize in 2008 for owner Huw Morris-Jones and shipwright Joe Irving – both East Yorkshire residents.

Joe is a graduate from the boatbuilding training college, IBTC in Lowestoft, UK and on leaving the college he quickly built a strong reputation locally for beautiful, performance-based rebuilds of many of the local fleet of Yorkshire One-designs based at the Bridlington Yacht Club. Having seen Joe’s work on his own YOD, Huw Morris-Jones believed in Joe’s ability to carry out a project on the much larger scale of an 8-Metre Fife racing yacht. Joe squared the circle by maintaining his notorious attention to detail over this vaster scale.

It was, in fact, Joe who had put Huw and Ierne together through a contact he made during his time at IBTC, where a Portuguese sailor, Antonio Correia, was learning the skills he would need to rebuild the yacht he had owned and loved for 20 years – that yacht was Ierne . One thing that his time at IBTC taught Antonio was that the amount of time, effort and money it was going to take to do justice to rebuilding one of the world’s most sought-after historic racing machines was vastly greater than he had imagined. Huw stepped in and bought the boat from Antonio with the promise of a full and prompt return to the water.

When the yacht was repatriated to the UK, the low-loader headed straight for Joe’s Irving’s yard, where stripping commenced immediately. The previous assessment of work required was rapidly superceded by a schedule of much greater complexity once the true extent of the ravages to the hull that 80 years afloat and 10 years in a Portuguese farm shed had been revealed. What had once been planned as a refit became a full-scale restoration.

Ierne bowsprit

Fairlie Restorations of Hamble, keepers of the majority of what remains today of the Fife document archive, found some of the original drawings and sail plans as well as authentic patterns for fixtures and fittings, while innumerable links were forged to local craftsmen for items such as metal floors, bronze castings and exotic timber. The project rumbled into life and the boat that had not sailed for more than a decade hit the water in 2008, just in time for that year’s Fife reunion on the Clyde in Scotland.

Ierne olympics

Originally built for renowned Irish yachtsman, Arthur F Sharman-Crawford – of the family that owned the brewers of Beamish Stout, and sailing adviser to Sir Tomas Lipton – the 1914-built First Rule 8-Metre Ierne was one of a series of four racing yachts, all at some stage named Ierne , that Sharman-Crawford had built by William Fife III between 1910 and 1920. The yacht restored by Huw Morris-Jones is the third in that series and the second 8-Metre, yard No 638. She was the only one listed as still owned by AF Sharman-Crawford at the outbreak of WWI, in 1914. It seems that she spent the war, along with many other distinguished European yachts, in Scandinavia, as she re-emerges after the hostilities in Christiania, now Oslo, Norway in the ownership of a Magnus Korrow, by whom it is reputed that she was sailed to the gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games.

Ierne's bermudan rig

Her original rig was one of Fife’s early forays into the bermudan arena and was somewhat willowy – Sharman-Crawford had three masts built for her in her first season alone – and this was an area that required careful analysis during her rebuild: though there was a quest for purity, a requirement to achieve a useable yacht also prevailed. And so yacht historian Theo Rye was asked to design a rig that was both historically accurate as well as practical for today’s sailing demands.

It seems that early in her existence, a number of alternative rigs had been mooted by Fife, perhaps because her rig was considered weak, but also at least one incorporating a short club-gaff rig to accommodate changes made to the 8-Metre rule. These rig drawings refer to a number of other yachts as well as Ierne and contain a series of historical amendments and up-dates, so it took Theo Rye plenty of head scratching to unravel the story. In the end he deciphered the notes and amendment details, concluding with the analysis: “As a possible sequence we could envisage Ierne ’s owner approaching Fife in June 1914, having had at least one mast fail, and asking him for a solution; at which point Fife looked at putting a gaff rig into her, but the outbreak of WWI perhaps postponed this change.”

“We can conclude that the ‘club’ gaff rig shown on the original plans was an exercise investigating how to make Ierne rate under the Second Rule, in March 1920, as it refers to a “Maximum Height” for the rig and the calculation of the foretriangle area uses a 0.85 factor, both of which were features of the Second Rule.

The sail plan that Theo Rye produced for the rebuilt Ierne was based closely on the original 1914 drawings, though with a reduction in overall area to compensate for increases in LWL and displacement brought about by the inclusion of an engine, while still allowing her to rate at 8-Metres. In addition, a second set of spreaders has been added in keeping with current best-practice regarding 8-Metre rigs, and to-date the rig has proved stable and powerful in all sailing.

On deck

Today, sympathy and simplicity reign aboard Ierne , exactly as when she was first launched, and these were the twin themes that Huw Morris-Jones maintained throughout the rebuild. Internally, accommodation is to a high quality, but spare, as befits a pedigree racing yacht. Simple varnished slats finish off the hull interior in a practical and pretty fashion, while cushioned side-bunks provide what’s necessary to make staying aboard during regattas feasible. But it’s on deck and underway that Ierne comes to life.

Ierne interior

It’s believed that Ierne ‘s hull design is as close to hydro-dynamic perfection as could be achieved at the time of her build and to some she is rated as the ultimate First Rule 8-Metre. She leaves virtually no wake as she slips through the water and exhibits many of the distinctive Fife characteristics.

Ierne no winches

In large part, Fife derived Ierne ’s performance by producing a narrow hull form (maximum beam is just 7ft 7in with LOD of 45ft) combined with lots of tumblehome while, in keeping with the drive for originality, no winches clutter her decks and navigation equipment has been kept to the barest minimum. Her deck layout is a simple blend of the necessities required to sail fast combined with a breath-taking quality of workmanship and finish. To look along the deck while sat at the tiller gives a helmsman the sense of being in control of something very special.

The lack of modern aids, means that she takes some attention to detail in order to get the best performance out of her, but the benefits include exhilarating speed and the glee derived from feeling what it’s like to sail a true historic yacht.

To be able to say “I own a Fife” is one thing, but to be able to sail a yacht that feels close to what Fife intended: to pick up the feeling of vitality through the tiller, or the electricity of out-and-out sailing performance, can only be achieved by returning a yacht as nearly as possible to a designer’s original intentions.  Ierne gets closer to this purity than most have dared.

Step Aboard a Restored Presidential Yacht That Once Belonged to JFK and Jackie O.

Design veteran Jack Fhillips embarked on a three-year historic restoration to preserve this important piece of American history.

At the time, the nearly 100-year-old vessel needed an extensive architectural overhaul to save it from "certain demise," according to Fhillips. Charles Modica, a longtime client and local developer in Palm Beach County, had purchased the run-down ship and was seeking a historical interiors transformation that would replicate the decor of the Kennedy era as closely as possible.

Preceding Air Force One, presidential yachts (affectionately known as "Floating White Houses") were important destinations for escaping the "claustrophobic tension" of the Oval Office, Henry Kissinger wrote. They were used for everything from meetings with prominent world leaders to pleasure cruises down the Potomac after a tough day of running a country.

A revolutionary yacht in terms of speed upon its inaugural launch in 1931, the Honey Fitz served five consecutive U.S. presidents: Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard M. Nixon, after being originally commissioned for Sewell Avery of Montgomery Ward, one of the most prominent retail behemoths of the day. Though Nixon renamed the boat Patricia in honor of his wife, and it has since been renamed and repurposed by various private owners, the ship is best known as Honey Fitz in popular culture once JFK took the helm, and Modica sought to restore the vessel to its highest prominence.

john kennedy relaxing

"After 50 years of practicing, this project was a perfect and natural fit for my firm," says Fhillips, who has a background in historical preservation as well as interiors, and, as a resident of Palm Beach County, has worked on many private yachts.

The Honey Fitz first went through a three-year restoration process that required a complete overhaul of beams, subfloor, decks, and the superstructure of the yacht in line with experts in traditional shipwright methods, wooden yacht craftsmen, historical records, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

Fhillips finally got to take the reins with the interiors in January 2023 after combing through archived photographs, footage, and articles written about the ship, alongside the Honey Fitz 's captain and first mate. The team was able to piece together an immaculate interiors refitting and restoration that honors the ship's most historic (and glamorous) era during the Kennedy administration. Below, you can see a side-by-side view of the ship setting sail in 1961 and today.

"We serendipitously located the original company, Bielecky Brothers , in Queens, New York that Jackie Kennedy sourced for all the rattan furniture on the aft deck," Fhillips says.

To honor the yacht's storied past, Fhillips says, "We located copies of hand sketches of built-in sofas Jackie Kennedy drew on White House stationary that was recreated by a very talented man, Brad London, of Total Refit, Inc. "

a room with blue couches and a table

Those sofas are the focal point of the main salon, and the team also recreated the rattan oxbow club chairs, then styled the space with Kennedy family photos that would have been on the ship during the 1960s, as well as other memorabilia. Plenty more Kennedy mementos can be found in the stateroom in a vintage blue leather suitcase.

Modica had an English Regency-era antique dining set that was appropriate of the time that makes a perfect pairing with the LismoreWaterford crystal stemware reminiscent to the pattern gifted to JFK by the People of Ireland. The built-in buffet was rebuilt to its original integrity as well.

a flag on a boat

"My favorite spot on the boat would have to be the aft deck," Fhillips says. "It is so historically correct, from the iconic Kennedy captain's chair to the black telephone JFK used to the left of the chair. The rattan furniture was recreated, and we even located vintage gout stools that were seen in old photographs."

While the ship has completed its service to our country's presidents, it's certain to have a glamorous new era as it enters its next century. The Honey Fitz will now serve for use on limited charters and fundraising events, an ever-present reminder of the enduring legacy—and style—of both John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Biden administration moves to make conservation an equal to industry on US lands

The biden administration is moving to let conservationists lease government land for restoration.

The Biden administration on Thursday finalized a new rule for public land management that’s meant to put conservation on more equal footing with oil drilling, grazing and other extractive industries on vast government-owned properties.

The Biden administration on Thursday, April 18, 2024, finalized a proposed rule that’s meant to put conservation on equal footing with drilling, grazing and other uses of U.S.-owned lands, primarily in the West.

Matthew Brown / AP

Officials pushed past strong opposition from private industry and Republican governors to adopt the proposal.

The rule from the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management — which oversees more than 380,000 square miles of land, primarily in the U.S. West — will allow public property to be leased for restoration in the same way that oil companies lease land for drilling.

The rule also promotes the designation of more “areas of critical environmental concern” — a special status that can restrict development. It's given to land with historic or cultural significance or that's important for wildlife conservation.

The land bureau has a history of industry-friendly policies and for more than a century has sold grazing permits and oil and gas leases. In addition to its surface land holdings, the bureau regulates publicly-owned underground mineral reserves — such as coal for power plants and lithium for renewable energy — across more than 1 million square miles.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said the changes would “restore balance” to how the U.S. government manages its public lands. The new rule continues the administration’s efforts to use science to restore habitats and guide “strategic and responsible development,” Haaland said in a statement.

But Republican lawmakers and industry representatives blasted the move as a backdoor way to exclude mining, energy development and agriculture from government acreage that's often cheap to lease. They assert the administration is violating the "multiple use" mandate for Interior Department lands, by catapulting the "non-use" of federal lands — meaning restoration leases — to a position of prominence.

“By putting its thumb on the scales to strongly favor conservation over other uses, this rule will obstruct responsible domestic mining projects,” said National Mining Association President Rich Nolan.

The rule’s adoption comes amid a flurry of new regulations from the Biden administration as the Democrat seeks reelection to a second term in November.

Government agencies in recent weeks tightened vehicle emissions standards to cut greenhouse gas emissions, finalized limits on PFAS chemicals in drinking water and increased royalty rates for oil companies that drill on public lands.

About 10% of all land in the U.S. falls under the Bureau of Land Management’s jurisdiction, putting the agency at the center of arguments over how much development should be allowed on public property.

Environmentalists largely embraced the changes adopted Thursday, characterizing them as long overdue.

Trout Unlimited President Chris Wood said conservation already was part of the land bureau's mission under the 1976 Federal Lands Policy Management Act. The new rule, he said, was “a re-statement of the obvious.”

“We are pleased to see the agency recognizing what the law already states — conservation is a vital use of our public lands,” he said.

Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, a staunch Biden critic, on Thursday said he will introduce legislation to repeal the public lands rule. The Republican lawmaker alleged it would block access to areas that people in Wyoming depend on for mineral production, grazing and recreation.

"President Biden is allowing federal bureaucrats to destroy our way of life,” he said.

But Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva of New Mexico said protecting public lands has wide support among the American people.

Oil, gas and mining companies “have had the upper hand on our public lands for too long,” Grijalva said.

Restoration leases will not be issued if they would conflict with activity already underway on a parcel of land, officials said. They also said private industry could benefit from the program, since companies could buy leases and restore that acreage to offset damage they might do to other government-owned properties.

Those leases were referred to as “conservation leases” in the agency's original proposal last year. That was changed to “restoration leases” and “mitigation leases” in the final rule, but their purpose appears largely the same.

While the bureau previously issued leases for conservation purposes in limited cases, it has never had a dedicated program for it.

Bureau Director Tracy Stone-Manning has said the changes address the rising challenges of climate change and development. She told The Associated Press when the changes were announced last year that making conservation an "equal" to other uses would not interfere with grazing, drilling and other activities.

Former President Donald Trump tried to ramp up fossil fuel development on bureau lands, before President Joe Biden suspended new oil and gas leasing when he entered office. Biden later revived the deals to win West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s support for the 2022 climate law .

Cape Coral's premier historic gemstone, The Yacht Club, will be gone by the end of May

joe's yacht restoration

Cape Coral began demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings this week, starting the work to bring down one of the city's oldest structures.

"Demolition is anticipated to take about a month and a half – it should be done around the end of May," said Cape Coral Spokesperson Kaitlyn Mullen.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Here's what we know:

Yacht Club demolition takes down one building already

On Wednesday, the city announced the long-anticipated demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings.

By the end of the day, the Tony Rotino Senior Center, which, before Hurricane Ian, had offered programs and activities for individuals 50 and older since 1977 , had been pulled down.

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.

The firm is also tasked with  preserving a portion  of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.

Construction will  not affect the beach area.

Cape Coral Yacht Club designs chosen New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

Recent Cape Coral news Cape Coral to vote on moratoriums as a former mayor warns of possible legal ramification

The iconic Cape Coral Yacht Club has a storied history

Cape Coral's  Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .

In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.

The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in 2021 .

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sep. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule as justification for moving forward.

Longtime residents and former city officials such as former councilmember Gloria Tate and former mayor Joe Mazurkiewicz opposed the plans.

They tried to save the Yacht Club's main building, the ballroom — one of the city's oldest structures — however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much as $100 million .

When will the new Cape Coral Yacht Club be finished?

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

What's next for the new Yacht Club?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

"The design team will present the design plans to any members of the public who attend," Mullen said. "People can ask questions one-on-one of the design team and staff after the presentation."

Joltin’ joe project more than just a boat restoration.

tribune-admin August 7, 2015 Accolades , Featured , News , Our Town Leave a comment

MARTINEZ, Calif. – A once-in-a-lifetime project years in the making is now complete and helping to keep memories of Martinez’s favorite native son, Joe DiMaggio, alive and well.

A 22 foot Chris Craft pleasure boat called the “Joltin’ Joe,” was gifted to the New York Yankees baseball great during a ceremony at Yankee Stadium on “Joe DiMaggio Day,” Oct. 1, 1949.

The craft, berthed at the Martinez Marina just a few short blocks from DiMaggio’s birthplace and the setting of DiMaggio and film star Marilyn Monroe’s wedding reception, was used by the newlyweds in 1954 to cruise around the bay.

The fully restored Joltin’ Joe, a Chris Craft pleasure boat given to the Martinez-born Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio, on Oct. 1, 1949, during “Joe DiMaggio Day” at Yankee Stadium. (COURTESY / On File)

It was later loaned to numerous relatives of DiMaggio as a fishing boat, but when its last caretaker, Mike DiMaggio, passed away in 1991, the boat floated unused at the marina until marina managers discovered the well-worn vessel still belonged to famed Joltin’ Joe himself.

The managers asked DiMaggio if he would consider donating the boat to the city, and in a surprise visit to Martinez, the Yankee Clipper signed over the title.

After attempts at restoration were made, the boat sat for many years on display at the marina, and the elements took their toll.

That is, till Yankee fan, fisherman and City Public Works Director Dave Scola stowed the boat away in a City warehouse near the marina, waiting for offers of restoration to come.

None did, however, till a 2008 newspaper article about the Joltin’ Joe sparked the interest of Greg Reuter and the Sons of Italy of America, Diablo Valley Lodge 2167. They proposed to the City of Martinez the boat be fully restored.

Local Sons of Italy members John Wendt, Ray Raineri and Chuck Massetti met with City staff and committed to fundraising the estimated $50,000 it would take to restore the Chris Craft to its original condition. Then Martinez Carpenters Union 152 offered to contribute free labor to support the effort. Scola followed suit and located a restoration expert to supervise the work, and on March 24, 2010, the restoration began.

Wendt said the carpenters, Sons of Italy and restoration expert Don Curtis would meet every Saturday, eat at the Copper Skillet on Ferry Street, then head down to the warehouse to work on the boat. Over the past six years, Wendt said they’ve missed only six or seven Saturdays, with Curtis and the carpenters working some days till 2 or 3 p.m.

“It’s really unheard of, carpenters re-building a boat,” Wendt said, “but Don (Curtis) sat everybody down and step by step, showed us how to do it.”

Wendt said the group, comprised over the years of Curtis, carpenters Rick Aldridge, Bill Heinrichson, Terryl Lee, Ernest McCary, Rich Ortiz, Greg Powell, Danny Russell and Clem Smaker, along with Sons of Italy Chuck Massetti, Ray Raineri, Troy Wriston and himself, slowly took the Joltin’ Joe apart piece by dilapidated piece, carefully labeling each one for reconstruction and reassembly.

“Curtis is a true artist,” Wendt said. “Just watching the way he sands, the way he uses a drill … . He’d take a hunk of wood and hand carve it into this beautifully shaped piece. It was just really something to watch him work on that boat, and instruct all the guys on what to do.”

Almost five and a half years and $75,000 later, just mere days before the group planned to show their restoration work at the South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic on July 24, the work was completed. Joe DiMaggio’s Joltin’ Joe now looks just as it did when Joe and Marilyn took their post-wedding cruise from the Martinez Marina.

Wendt and others involved in the restoration traveled to Tahoe Keys Marina for the ‘50s and Fins show, following the Joltin’ Joe as it was towed behind a City truck.

Wendt said that when the boat was launched at Tahoe, they had trouble starting the engine.

“It’d never been started before!” he said, “but eventually, we got it running and took it over for judging.”

The boat took second place in its class and won in the Most Improved division. But beyond that, Wendt said, the boat means so much more than shows and prizes.

“I was out there talking to people interested in what we’d done and interested in the history of the boat, and it almost makes you tear up,” Wendt said.

The fellows plan to show the boat Aug. 7-8 at the 2015 Lake Tahoe Concours d‘Elegance Wooden Boat Show, but after that, the future of the craft is unknown.

“We hope the City will display it at the old Train Depot on Ferry Street,” Wendt said, but plans for the depot have yet to be decided. “Talk of the Historical Society going in there and having a little shop or tourist-type place with a museum is a possibility, but we just don’t know yet.”

Either way, Wendt said the experience was rewarding.

“I get teary-eyed just thinking about it,” he said. “It really was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of something like this.”

Who is Bob Graham? Here’s what to know about the former Florida governor and senator

joe's yacht restoration

Former two-term Florida governor and three-term U.S. Sen. Bob Graham died Tuesday . He was 87.

Graham, who died of old age with his wife, Adele, and their family by his side in a retirement community in Gainesville, was celebrated for his "common man" approach to governing and his regular "work days" spending an entire day each month working different ordinary jobs with the press kept away.

Who is Senator Bob Graham?

You could say education and politics were in his blood. Daniel Robert Graham was born in Coral Gables on Nov. 9, 1936, the son of a schoolteacher (Hilda Elizabeth Simmons) and a Florida state senator, mining engineer and dairy farmer (Ernest "Cap" Graham).

Just barely, though. Ernest Graham was elected to the first of his two four-year terms just six days before Bob was born. Back at the cattle and dairy farm, Graham grew up raising livestock.

Bob Graham attended Miami Senior High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1959 in political science from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1962. He moved back to Miami and went into real estate development law just as Florida was experiencing another land boom.

While at UF, he met Adele Khoury and they married in 1959. Bob and Adele Graham, who also became a teacher, have four daughters.

Was Bob Graham a Florida Senator?

Graham, a Democrat, was a member of the Florida House of Representatives first, elected in 1966 to represent Dade County.

In 1970, he moved to the state Senate and was re-elected in 1972 and 1976. During his time, he chaired an education committee but turned down a potential appointment as Education Commissioner under then-Gov. Reubin Askew because he had bigger plans.

Was Bob Graham a Florida governor?

Graham, a relatively unknown candidate, won the governor's race in 1978 through nonstop campaigning and positioning himself, a rich, Harvard-educated lawyer, as a working man with his habit of working 8-hour days at different everyday jobs to meet constituents and get a better idea of what they did.

“Graham used the campaign for governor to radically change his persona from D. Robert Graham, button-downed Harvard lawyer and millionaire dairy farmer and land developer, to folksy, down-home ‘Bob,’ “ history professor Steven G. Noll wrote in "The Governors of Florida."

It worked. He won, and four years later he won again with a massive margin — nearly 800,000 votes — that no one has touched since.

What were Bob Graham's 'working days'?

When he was in the Senate, Graham talked to a frustrated teacher who said no one on his education committee had any experience in education. She arranged for him to teach a semester of civics at Carol City Senior High in Miami.

During his gubernatorial campaign, Graham worked at 100 different jobs across the state , carrying luggage, fishing for lobsters, picking tomatoes, shrimping, serving tables, cutting hair, picking up trash, paving roads, plumbing, and more. He was a social worker, he rode along with police, and he spent two days as a temporary worker and applied for food stamps. His last job, before the election, was housewife.

After his election, he continued the practice as governor and U.S. Senator, working Floridian's jobs one day a month. He always trained beforehand, worked an entire shift, kept the press away for all of it except a very limited portion, and did every part of the job. Ultimately, according to floridamemory.com , he worked 921 jobs in over 109 cities and five states.

What did Bob Graham do as governor of Florida?

During his two terms as Florida's 38th governor, Bob Graham was known for :

  • Focusing on improving state universities, lowering class sizes, increasing teacher salaries and raising per-pupil spending from 21st to 13th in the country.
  • Launching the largest environmental protection program in Florida history, bringing thousands of environmentally important lands under state control and establishing the Save the Everglades program.
  • Working to improve the state's economy, which added 1.2 million jobs during his tenure, many of them in high-tech manufacturing.
  • Expanding childcare and abuse prevention programs and service programs for the eldery.
  • Presiding over 16 executions, including the first one in modern times.
  • Working to get an anti-gay amendment declared unconstitutional.
  • Activating 1,800 National Guard troops to move fuel during a trucker strike.
  • Proposing the winning design for the collapsed Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

What is the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge?

Decades before a container ship smacked into a Baltimore bridge and brought it down, part of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay collapsed in 1980 when a freighter hit a support column. Several cars and a Greyhound bus plunged into the water and 35 people were killed.

Graham's suggestion of building a cable-stayed bridge that was twice as wide won out. The design seemed to be sound: on the day before the original grand opening date in 1987, a shrimp boat struck the new bridge's protective bumpers without damage to the bridge.

While most residents just call it the Skyway, the official name is the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Was Bob Graham a U.S. Senator?

Graham's popularity got him into the U.S. Senate in 1986. where he served for 18 years. He became known as a consensus builder and an expert on both domestic issues like environmentalism and Everglades restoration but also foreign policy. He also continued working to improve education, authoring a bill to require testing for competency and progress in public schools.

He served 10 years on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was the chairman during 9/11. where he led investigations of the terror attacks. He was an outspoken critic of the Saudi government but voted against authorizing the invasion of Iraq, which he considered a distraction . Graham also was a primary author of the USA Patriot Act.

Who is Gwen Graham?

Gwen Graham , one of Bob and Adele's daughters, followed him into politics. She represented a 14-county North Florida Congressional district (which included Tallahassee) from 2015 to 2017, but chose not to seek a second term after redistricting made her district mostly Republican.

Instead, she ran for governor in 2018, ultimately losing to Ron DeSantis. In 2021, President Joe Biden named her to an advisory position in the Department of Education.

She's not the only famous Graham. Among Bob Graham's family, there's also:

  • Philip Graham : Bob's half-brother, he was publisher and co-owner of The Washington Post and its parent company.
  • Katherine Graham: Bob's sister-in-law and the first female publisher of a major American newspaper (The Washington Post) and the first woman elected to the board of the Associated Press.

The Grahams have four daughters: Gwen Graham, Cissy McCullough, Suzanna Gibson and Kendall Elias.

Did Bob Graham run for president?

Graham was often considered as a Vice President nominee and ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential race, but he dropped out before the primaries a few months after he underwent heart surgery. He retired from the Senate in 2005.

In so doing, he also maintained his record: in his entire political career , Bob Graham never lost an election.

After his retirement, Graham spent a year at Harvard teaching citizenship and writing his first book, "America, the Owners Manual." He then established the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida "to create a community of students, scholars, and citizens who share a commitment to revitalizing the civic culture of Florida and the nation," according to the center's website.

Did Bob Graham write a book?

He wrote several.

  • “ America: The Owner’s Manual " : A book about how the government works, for young readers.
  • “ Intelligence Matters ": His account of his work with the Senate Intelligence Committee.
  • “ Keys to the Kingdom ": A fiction novel about the Middle East.
  • “ Rhoda the Alligator ”: A children's book based on stories he told his grandchildren.

Coronet: America's oldest yacht continues extensive restoration

The 40.5 metre Coronet has been moved to Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut for the final stage of a near thirty-year restoration.

The wood-hulled sailing yacht still has three years of restoration work ahead of her and will remain on display at the museum for the remainder of the project. Exact details of the project remain under wraps, but it is understood that the interior will be the next point of focus.

The yacht was acquired by Newport-based IYRS School of Technology and Trades in 1995, and she was scaled back to the frame and sliced in half in order to be rebuilt.  In 2004, she was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1885 at New York-based shipyard Poillon, Coronet is the oldest registered yacht in the US and has had a number of high-profile owners, including oil tycoon Rufus T. Bush and railroad magnate Arthur Curtiss James, one of the wealthiest men in America in the 1900s.

She famously won a transatlantic race with a cash prize of $10,000 in 1887 and has circumnavigated the globe with visits to Africa, Hawaii, China and the Middle East.

The yacht is now under the care of hospitality group Crew.

Biden administration moves to make conservation an equal to industry on US lands

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Biden administration on Thursday finalized a new rule for public land management that's meant to put conservation on more equal footing with oil drilling, grazing and other extractive industries on vast government-owned properties.

Officials pushed past strong opposition from private industry and Republican governors to adopt the proposal.

Recommended Videos

The rule from the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management — which oversees more than 380,000 square miles (990,000 square kilometers) of land, primarily in the U.S.

In addition to its surface land holdings, the bureau regulates publicly-owned underground mineral reserves — such as coal for power plants and lithium for renewable energy — across more than 1 million square miles (2.5 million square kilometers).

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said the changes would “restore balance” to how the U.S. government manages its public lands. The new rule continues the administration's efforts to use science to restore habitats and guide “strategic and responsible development,” Haaland said in a statement.

But Republican lawmakers and industry representatives blasted the move as a backdoor way to exclude mining, energy development and agriculture from government acreage that's often cheap to lease. They assert the administration is violating the “multiple use” mandate for Interior Department lands, by catapulting the “non-use” of federal lands — meaning restoration leases — to a position of prominence.

She told The Associated Press when the changes were announced last year that making conservation an “equal” to other uses would not interfere with grazing, drilling and other activities.
